Transcript: Adam
A child says, WHEEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids” plus “Apartment Eleven Productions,” “Original.” A purple circle with a ring attached to each side appears over “Apartment Eleven.”
[Child giggles, pop, playful music plays]
Kyle, Sigfried and Eric walk on a snowy path between bare trees.
[Peaceful music plays]
Sigfried says, THERE'S SERIOUSLY
NOTHING LIKE A WALK IN THE FOREST.
I LOVE FORESTS.
Kyle says, ME TOO.
FORESTS AND I - WE'RE LIKE THIS.
BESTIES BASICALLY.
Eric says, AND TODAY, WE'RE
GONNA MEET A KID WHO ALSO
WANTS TO BE A FOREST FRIEND.
Sigfried says, LET'S GO MEET HIM.
Kyle, Sigfried and Eric walk out of the fore and on to a small paved path. Animated question marks appear above their heads.
[Upbeat music plays, bird caws]
Sigfried asks, NONE OF US LOOKED AT
DIRECTIONS DID WE?
Kyle says, NOPE.
Eric says, NADA!
Kyle points and says, LET'S TRY THIS WAY.
Eric says, THAT'S THE WAY.
Sigfried says, FANTASTIC!
Red text over yellow and orange bursts reads, “Fantastic!”
[Upbeat music plays]
The Green Squad smiles. Yellow and red text reads, “Eric.” To the right of the text, Eric holds a reusable shopping bag and smiles. His chin-length black hair is straight and he wears a black t-shirt and brown overalls.
Red and orange text reads, “Lisa.” To the left of the text, Lisa wears her brown hair in small braids. She wears a dark red blouse with white flecks with light blue jeans.
Purple and blue text reads, “Sigfried.” To the right of the text, Sigfried wears a black beret over his pale curly blond hair. He wears a red long-sleeve shirt.
Green and blue text reads, “Shakira.” To the left of the text, a girl with long black hair turns. She wears a black sweater and ripped blue jeans. A pink floral scarf is knotted around her neck.
Dark and light blue text reads, “Kyle.” To the right of the text, Kyle wears a red backpack. His dark brown hair reaches beneath his ears.
White text reads, “TVOKIDS presents.” Below that, green text with dark green dots reads, “Green.” Below that, pink text reads, “Squad.” The Green Squad poses beneath the text.
An electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
A slender boy sits beside a table with a globe on it. He wears a grey and black long-sleeved shirt. He has short brown hair and dark brown eyes. Pink text reads, “Adam.”
Adam says, HI, MY NAME IS ADAM.
I AM NINE YEARS OLD.
[Adam makes whooshing noises]
He says, I HAVE LOTS OF HOBBIES.
I LIKE TO PLAY PIANO.
Animated green music notes and the text, “La la” rise from a keyboard.
Adam continues, I LIKE TO SWIM
AND I LIKE TO READ.
I REALLY LIKE WRITING SONGS
ABOUT NATURE WITH MY BROTHER.
IT'S REALLY FUN.
WE MAKE VIDEOS THAT ARE
ALL ABOUT SAVING THE PLANET.
I LOVE SO MANY
THINGS ABOUT NATURE.
I LIKE TREES, BEES,
WHALES AND MUSHROOMS.
On a beach, Adam and a smaller boy stop and put a piece of garbage in a blue bag. Both wear winter jackets and small piles of snow fill divots in the sand.
Adam narrates, MY FAMILY USED TO
LIVE BY THE BEACH.
WE WOULD USUALLY GO TO THE BEACH
EVERY MONTH AND JUST LOOK
AROUND FOR SOME GARBAGE AND PICK
SOME UP WITH GLOVES AND WE WOULD
USUALLY FILL A BIG BAG FULL OF GARBAGE.
I LIKE HELPING THE BEACH BECAUSE
EVERY TIME WE PICK UP GARBAGE
I FEEL LIKE THERE'S A FISH OR
AN ANIMAL THAT I JUST SAVED.
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO
HELP NATURE BECAUSE EVERYONE
CAN HELP A LITTLE BIT
IN A BIG PROBLEM.
NOW MY FAMILY MOVED AND WE DON'T
LIVE NEAR THE BEACH ANYMORE.
NOW WE LIVE NEAR THE FOREST.
I WANT TO HELP THE FOREST
LIKE I HELPED THE BEACH.
SO, I NEED YOU HELP SQUAD!
Text beside Adam reads, “I need your help!”
Outside, Eric, Kyle and Sigfried walk on a city sidewalk.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, WE MADE IT.
I'M SO EXCITED TO MEET ADAM.
Kyle says, YEAH.
HE'S AWESOME AND ALREADY LOVES
TAKING CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT.
Soon, Sigfried knocks on a door. Kyle and Eric stand behind him on a porch.
[Knocking]
Adam opens the door.
Adam says, HEY, SQUAD.
The squad says, HEY.
Text beside Adam reads, “Hey.” Text beside the squad reads, “Hey. Hey. Hey.”
Eric says, YOU MUST BE ADAM.
Adam says, YES, I AM.
Eric says, I'M ERIC.
Sigfried says, I'M SIGFRIED.
Kyle says, AND I'M KYLE.
Adam says, COME IN.
Adam says, HERE'S MY DAD, MY MOM,
AND MY LITTLE BROTHER ELIAS.
Green text beside a man with short brown hair reads, “Dad.” Yellow text bey a woman with long, curly dark brown hair reads, “Mom.” Pink text beside a boy with short auburn hair reads, “Brother Elias.”
Everyone says, HI.
Kyle says, NICE TO MEET YA.
SO, WE HEAR THAT YOU GUYS
ARE ALL ABOUT GOING GREEN.
Eric says, YOU KNOW; FORESTS
DO SO MUCH FOR US.
I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT
THAT WE HELP THEM OUT AS
MUCH AS WE CAN.
Kyle says, AND ADAM, I THINK WE'RE
GONNA HAVE NO PROBLEM MAKING
YOU A FRIEND OF THE FOREST.
Adam says, I'M SO EXCITED.
Eric says, WE ARE TOO.
LET'S GET OUT THERE!
Adam, Eric, Sigfried and Kyle jump off snow rocks. Text reads, “Green Squad.”
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Later, Eric and Adam walk on a paved path by trees.
Eric says, A REALLY AWESOME WAY
TO HELP OUT THE FOREST IS BY
PLANTING TREES.
SO MANY TOWNS AND CITIES HAVE
TREE PLANTING EVENTS IN THE FALL
AND SPRING.
WE JUST HAVE TO
LOOK AROUND FOR THEM.
BUT PLANTING TREES IS
NOT AS EASY AS IT SOUNDS.
THAT'S WHY I FOUND US TWO TREE
PLANTING EXPERT SUPER STARS.
LET'S GO MEET THEM.
[Upbeat music plays]
A woman and man stand in a snowy clearing. The woman wears a black touque and jacket, blue jeans and blue gloves. The man wears a black, red and yellow touque, black jacket and bright red pants. He has a black beard and moustache. He holds a shovel.
Text reads, Monica and Mark. Natural Environment Specialists.”
Eric says, HEY MARK.
HEY MONICA.
THIS IS MY BUDDY ADAM.
Monica and Mark say, HEY, ADAM.
Adam says, HI.
Monica says, WE'RE SO GLAD YOU'RE
ABLE TO JOIN US AND PLANT SOME
TREES TODAY.
WE GOT A SURPRISE EARLY
DUMP OF SNOW LAST
NIGHT BUT IT'S OKAY.
THE GROUND'S NOT FROZEN
SO WE CAN STILL PLANT.
Eric says, IT'S SWEET THAT YOU CAN
STILL PLANT STUFF WHEN IT'S
THIS COLD.
Mark says, YEAH.
GENERALLY CITIES WILL
PLANT TREES IN THE
SPRING TIME WHEN
THE ROOTS HAVE A GOOD
CHANCE TO ESTABLISH.
Monica says, WE CAN ALSO PLANT
IN THE FALL BECAUSE
TREES ARE BASICALLY
GOING TO SLEEP FOR THE
SEASON SO IT'S EASY TO
TRANSFER THEM FROM
THE POTS TO THE GROUND.
Adam says, I NEVER PLANTED
A TREE SO I'M REALLY EXCITED.
Monica says, LET'S PLANT SOME TREES.
[Lively music plays]
Adam, Eric, Monica and Mark pick up shovels.
Eric says, OOH.
Monica says, YOU WANT THE HOLE
TO BE BIG ENOUGH FOR THE PLANT
TO GROW.
THAT MEANS WE WANT IT TWO TIMES
AS WIDE AS THE POT AND JUST AS
DEEP AS THE SOIL IN THE POT.
Eric says, WE GOT THIS! READY?
Adam says, SET.
Adam, Mark, Monica and Eric say, DIG!
They dig.
[Rustling, lively music plays]
Mark says, WE'RE MAKING THE
TREE A REAL NICE PLACE TO LIVE.
Eric asks, NOW WHAT DO WE
DO IF WE ENCOUNTER ROOTS?
Monica says, IF IT'S A SMALL ROOT
YOU CAN JUST CUT IT WITH
YOUR SHOVEL.
IF IT'S TOO BIG WE'LL MOVE
THE HOLE A LITTLE BIT OVER.
Eric asks, BUT IT IS OKAY TO CUT IT?
Monica says, YEAH.
Eric says, PERFECT.
Marks says, SO, WE'RE GONNA
PUT OUR PLANT IN.
SO, LET'S SEE IF IT
LINES UP WITH THE SOIL. YEAH.
Eric cheers, GO TEAM!
Everyone high fives.
[Cheering, chuckling]
Adam asks, WHAT KIND OF
PLANTS ARE WE PLANTING?
Yellow text reads, “Sugar Maple.”
[Popping]
Monica explains, THIS IS A SUGAR MAPLE.
IT'S A NATIVE SPECIES.
WE ONLY PLANT NATIVE SPECIES IN
ALL OF OUR TREE PLANTING EVENTS.
[Bird caws]
Mark explains, NATIVE SPECIES ARE TREES
THAT ARE INDIGENOUS TO OUR AREA
AND HAVE GROWN HERE FOR A
VERY VERY VERY LONG TIME.
Eric explains, NATIVE SPECIES ARE
ALWAYS THE BEST TO PLANT NO MATTER
WHAT YOU'RE PLANTING.
Mark says, YEAH.
THAT'S BECAUSE NATIVE SPECIES
THAT ARE LOCAL TO HERE ARE THE
MOST HELPFUL FOR THE ECOSYSTEM
AND SUPPORTIVE TO THE BIRDS
INSECTS AND ANIMALS AROUND HERE.
[Popping]
Adam says, NATIVE TREES IT IS THEN.
Mark gives Adam a thumbs up.
Monica says, ALL RIGHT THEN.
SO, NOW IT'S TIME TO GET
THE PLANT OUT OF THE POT.
[Upbeat music plays, bird caws]
Eric says, YOU HOLD THE PLANT,
YOU MAKE A PEACE SIGN AROUND
THE STEM OF THE PLANT, UPSIDE
DOWN AND YOU'LL SEE THE PLANT
COMES OUT.
I'M GONNA LET YOU DO IT, OKAY?
Adam says, OKAY.
Eric says, SO, YOU DO THE
PEACE SIGN TECHNIQUE.
THERE YOU GO, BE VERY CAREFUL.
OUPELAYE. YOU DON'T WANT TO GET...
OOOHH! THERE YOU GO!
Monica says, SO, BEFORE YOU PUT THE
PLANT DOWN WE WANT TO MASSAGE
THE ROOTS A LITTLE.
THE REASON IS THE PLANT HAS BEEN
GROWING IN A POT FOR A LONG TIME
AND THE ROOTS ARE GROWING
IN A CIRCLE BECAUSE OF THAT.
SO, WE JUST WANT TO PULL THEM
OUT A LITTLE SO THAT WHEN THEY
GROW IN THE GROUND THEY CAN
GO OUTWARDS.
[Bird caws]
Eric says, GO FOR IT.
GO FOR IT, ADAM.
Mark says, YEAH, IT'S LIKE
A LITTLE MASSAGE FOR THE ROOTS.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, SQUEEZE HERE, RIGHT?
A LITTLE BIT.
Monica says, JUST A LITTLE.
Eric says, SQUEEZE THE...
Monica says, THAT'S PERFECT.
Adam asks, CAN WE PUT IT IN?
Monica says, YEAH, JUST PUT IT
STRAIGHT UP.
Adam puts tree in the hole.
Eric cheers, YEAH, YOU JUST DID IT!
YOU PLANTED YOUR FIRST TREE.
WOOHOO!
[Applause]
Eric says, OKAY, WELL WE'RE NOT
DONE YET BUT YOU JUST PUT YOUR
FIRST TREE IN THE GROUND. YEAH!
Mark says, WE'RE GONNA MAKE THE
TREE FEEL REAL COZY HERE SO WE'RE
GONNA USE ALL THE SOIL TO FILL ALL
AROUND IT.
Adam says, AH!
[Upbeat music plays]
Monica explains, IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT
TO PACK THE SOIL IN TIGHTLY BECAUSE
WE WANT A GOOD CONNECTION
BETWEEN THE ROOTS AND THE SOIL.
YOU CAN PACK IT IN WITH YOUR
HANDS AND YOU CAN EVEN STEP ALL
AROUND THE PLANT.
Eric says, THERE YOU GO BUT NOT
ON THE TREE.
[Laughter]
Adam sways as he walks around the tree.
Eric says, OH, THE MOVES ADAM.
IT'S THE TREE DANCE.
Monica says, LOOKS GOOD.
[Upbeat music continues]
Mark says, WE HAVE ONE MORE
STEP, WE'RE GONNA ADD MULCH
AROUND THE BASE.
Eric cheers, MULCH TIME!
Mark says, LET'S GO!
Eric says, WOO!
Mark says, WE'RE GONNA FILL UP
THE BUCKETS WITH MULCH.
WE'LL FILL THESE AND
WE'LL TAKE IT TO THE TREES.
[Whooshing]
Mark continues, WE'RE GONNA DUMP
THE MULCH ALL AROUND THE TREE O
N THE OUTSIDE.
SO, WHAT IT'S GONNA DO IS IT'S
GONNA KEEP THE MOISTURE AROUND
THE PLANT AND IT'S GONNA
BREAKDOWN AND INWARD TO
THE SOIL SO IT HAS MORE MINERALS
AND THINGS LIKE THAT FOR GROWING.
AND WE'VE DONE IT. YOU'VE PLANTED
YOUR FIRST TREE.
Text reads, “Yay! Yay! Yay!”
[Cheering]
Eric says, GOOD JOB.
ON TOP, HIGH FIVE!
THIS SUGAR MAPLE IS READY FOR
A GREAT LIFE IN THE FOREST.
LET'S DO THE ADAM TREE DANCE.
Everyone says, YEAH!
Mark, Adam, Eric and Monica stand and dance beside the small tree.
They all say, WOO!
Eric says, LET'S HOPE THAT THE
TREE GETS THIS BIG!
Eric lifts Adam high over his head.
Everyone cheers, WHOA!
[Laughter]
[Upbeat music plays]
Adam says, I LOVED THE TREE PLANTING
BECAUSE I LOVED STOMPING ON THE
FLOOR FOR THE TREE DANCE
AND I'VE NEVER PLANTED A
TREE BEFORE.
I ALSO LIKED IT WHEN EVERYBODY
STARTED DANCING THE TREE DANCE
WITH ME AND I LOVED MAKING
IT UP.
Monica says, ISN'T THIS AMAZING?
THESE NATIVE TREES ARE NOW
A PART OF OUR URBAN FOREST.
Adam asks, URBAN FOREST?
Mark says, OH YEAH, THE URBAN FOREST
IS A COLLECTION OF ALL THE TREES AND
SHRUBS WITHIN THE CITY.
ON PUBLIC SPACE, IN YOUR
SCHOOLYARD AND AROUND HOMES
AND APARTMENTS.
Monica says, SO, ALL TREES TAKE GASES
THAT ARE BAD FOR US LIKE CARBON
DIOXIDE AND OTHER POLLUTANTS
OUT OF THE AIR AND THAT'S REALLY
IMPORTANT IN BIG CITIES LIKE
WHERE WE ARE BECAUSE THERE'S
SO MANY PEOPLE AND CARS.
[Birds caw]
Mark says, YEAH AND THEY PROVIDE
SHADE FOR US TO WALK UNDER AND
TREES ARE A REALLY IMPORTANT
TOOL IN COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE.
Eric says, MAN, I CAN LISTEN TO YOU GUYS
TALK ABOUT TREES ALL DAY.
Adam agrees, SAME.
Eric says, BUT THERE'S ANOTHER
MISSION AND KYLE'S WAITING.
Adam says, THANK YOU FOR HELPING
ME PLANT MY FIRST TREE.
Mark says, WELL, THANK YOU AND
PLEASE COME BACK IN THE SPRING
TO PLANT SOME MORE.
Adam, Monica and Mark say, BYE.
Eric says, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, TAKE CARE.
Mark says, BYE, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
Adam says, YES.
Mark says, TREE YA LATER!
Text reads, “Tree ya later!”
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric narrates, OKAY, TAKE A DEEP BREATH.
[Inhaling]
Eric narrates, YOU KNOW WHO YOU
CAN THANK FOR THAT?
TREES OF COURSE.
A TYPICAL TREE PRODUCES NEARLY
ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY
KILOGRAMS OF OXYGEN EACH YEAR.
THAT'S ABOUT THE
WEIGHT OF A TIGER.
TWO FULL GROWN TREES PROVIDE
ENOUGH OXYGEN FOR A FAMILY
OF FOUR.
THEY ALSO HELP KEEP THE
PLANET COOL AND FIGHT POLLUTION.
NOT THAT KINDA COOL.
YEAH, THAT KIND.
FIFTEEN BILLION TREES
GET CUT EVERY YEAR.
[Cracking]
Eric narrates, THAT'S TWO FOR
EVERY HUMAN ON EARTH.
SO, PLANTING TREES
IN SUPER IMPORTANT.
PROTECTING THE ONES THAT ALREADY
EXIST HELPS FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE
AND STAY COOL.
An animated hat and sunglasses appear on Eric.
Eric narrates, THAT'S NOT WHAT
I MEAN BUT THESE SHADES ARE AWESOME.
[Whooshing]
Eric, Adam, Sigfried and Kyle skip on a path. Text reads, “Green Squad.”
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Kyle stands in front of a wooden fence. Adam walks to him.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, HEY, ADAM, HOW'S IT GOING?
Adam says, GOOD.
Kyle says, SO, I FIGURED TO HELP THE
FOREST WE SHOULD PROBABLY EXPLORE
THE FOREST, RIGHT?
Adam says, LET'S GO.
Kyle narrates, PLANTING A TREE WAS
A GREAT FIRST STEP BUT A FOREST
IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST TREES.
IT'S A WHOLE ECOSYSTEM, MADE UP
OF MANY SMALL PARTS THAT ALL
WORK TOGETHER.
Adam sits by fallen trees. Kyle kneels beside him. Green and purple text reads, “Understory.”
Kyle says, SO, THERE'S THIS WHOLE
PART OF THE FOREST CALLED THE
UNDERSTORY, WHICH IS EVERYTHING
FROM THE FOREST FLOOR - FROM THE
GROUND TO THE TREETOPS.
INSECTS, BUGS, VINES, BUSHES,
SAPLINGS, A TON OF THE THINGS.
Adam says, THAT LOOKS LIKE
THE TREE I PLANTED.
Kyle says, AND DOESN'T IT KINDA
LOOK LIKE A STICK THOUGH?
SEE, THAT'S THE THING IS THAT
SAPLINGS CAN BE SO SMALL AND
SOMETIMES IF WE STRAY OFF THE
FOREST PATH WE CAN STEP ON ALL
THESE TINY LITTLE SAPLINGS THAT
ARE TRYING THEIR BEST TO GROW.
Adam says, I ALWAYS NEED TO STAY
ON THE FOREST PATH BUT I NEVER
KNEW WHY.
Kyle explains, SAPLINGS ARE AN
IMPORTANT PART OF THE UNDERSTORY
AND THE UNDERSTORY IS AN
IMPORTANT PART OF OUR ECOSYSTEM.
THE ECOSYSTEM IS
EVERYTHING THAT'S IN THE FOREST.
FROM THE ANIMALS THAT LIVE IN
IT, TO THE INSECTS, THE TREES.
AND THAT MAKES UP A
FOREST OF BIODIVERSITY.
AND THE BIODIVERSITY, OF COURSE,
IS JUST A FANCY WORD FOR ALL
LIFE LIVING IN AN AREA.
Adam says, THAT'S SO COOL.
Kyle says, IT TOTALLY IS AND THAT
BRINGS US TO OR NEXT ADVENTURE.
Kyle puts his red backpack down on a dirt path and opens it. He takes a clipboard out.
[Upbeat music continues]
Kyle says, HEY, ADAM, CHECK THIS OUT.
Adam asks, A SCAVENGER HUNT?
A heading on a piece of paper on the clipboard reads, “Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt.” A list beneath the heading has empty circles beside each line. The lines read, “A seed,” “Something dead!” “Something alive!” “A colour,” “A good hiding spot,” “A native tree.”
Kyle says, NOT JUST ANY SCAVENGER HUNT.
A BIODIVERSITY SCAVENGER HUNT.
THIS IS ALL ABOUT OBSERVING THE
FOREST BEYOND JUST THE TREES AND
REALLY APPRECIATING THE
AWESOME BIODIVERSITY AT WORK.
EVEN WITH SNOW ON THE GROUND
THERE'S STILL SO MUCH TO SEE.
Adam asks, SHOULD WE TAKE PHOTOS
TO PROVE WE FOUND IT?
Kyle says, I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK.
THAT WAY WE CAN OBSERVE THE
NATURE WITHOUT DISTURBING IT.
Sigfried walks down trail behind Adam and Kyle.
Sigfried says, HEY, YOU TWO.
DID SOMEBODY SAY SCAVENGER HUNT?
Kyle says, OF COURSE WE DID.
HERE'S THE LIST AND THE
RULES ARE - STAY ON THE PATH.
DON'T DISTURB THE NATURE.
Sigfried and Kyle each hold a clipboard.
Sigfried says, ALL OVER IT!
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, GUESS WE BETTER GET MOVING.
Adam takes a photograph with a tablet. Kyle take a photograph with his cellphone. Checkmarks appear on an animated biodiversity scavenger hunt checklist.
[Clicking, chiming, upbeat music continues]
Sigfried says, OOH, THIS IS GONNA BE THE
PERFECT HIDING SPOT.
Sigfried takes photograph with a camera. A checkmark appears on the animated biodiversity scavenger hunt checklist.
[Clicking, chiming]
Kyle notices an ant figure. He smiles and picks it up. He meets Adam and Sigfried back at the wooden fence.
Kyle says, OKIDOKI.
SCAVENGER HUNT COMPLETE.
LET'S SEE WHAT WE FOUND.
[Upbeat music plays]
Adam says, I FOUND AN OAK LEAF
WHICH COMES FROM AN OAK TREE,
WHICH IS A NATIVE TREE.
Sigfried says, WELL, I FOUND AN
AMAZING HIDING SPOT.
CHECK OUT THIS HOLE.
Kyle says, WELL, I THINK I FOUND
THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THING.
I DIDN'T THINK I WAS GONNA
FIND ANYTHING ALIVE HERE IN THE
WINTER BUT CHECK OUT THIS MOTH.
Adam says, WHOA. IT LANDED RIGHT
ON THE TREE.
Kyle says, YEAH.
DID YOU HAVE A LOT OF FUN?
Adam says, YEAH.
Kyle says, BUT I DID FIND SOMETHING
A LITTLE STRANGE IN THE WOODS.
Sigfried says, OH?
Adam says, OH...
[Tense music plays]
Kyle says, ADAM, CLOSE YOUR EYES.
YOU CAN OPEN THEM.
Kyle holds the ant figure in front of Adam’s face. Adam opens his eyes and startles backwards.
[Dramatic music plays]
Kyle shouts, AH, IT'S A GIANT ANT!
OOOOHH! AAAHH!
Adam says, THAT IS A WEIRD THING
TO FIND IN THE FOREST.
Kyle moves the ant towards Adam’s face. Kyle moves the ant towards his own face.
[Adam shouts, upbeat music plays, Kyle shouts]
Sigfried says, HOW ABOUT WE TAKE A WALK AND
I'LL TALK TO YOU ABOUT OUR NEXT
MISSION BUT YOU CAN KEEP THE ANT.
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
Animated trees sway and smile. Text beside them reads, “Hey.” “Yay!” “Hi!”
[Upbeat music plays, birds chirp]
Kyle narrates, DID YOU KNOW THAT
TREES IN FORESTS LIVE LONGER
THAN TREES GROWING ALL ALONE?
AND THEY COMMUNICATE
TO PROTECT EACH OTHER.
FOR EXAMPLE, IF AN ACACIA TREE
GETS MUNCHED ON BY A GIRAFFE IT
SENDS MESSAGES TO OTHER ACACIA
TREES WHO THEN PRODUCE CHEMICALS
THAT TASTE TERRIBLE TO GIRAFFES.
UNDER THE FOREST FLOOR TREE
ROOTS ARE CONNECTED BY A NETWORK
OF FUNGI THAT LOOK JUST LIKE A
HUMAN BRAIN. OH.
TREES USE THIS NETWORK TO SHARE
FOOD AND MEDICINE AND MAYBE A
LITTLE TICKLE.
HAHA, KIDDING.
Animated tree roots tickle Kyle.
[Kyle chuckles, whoosh]
Kyle narrates, HAHA, STOP.
I'M SUPER TICKLISH.
FORESTS ARE SMART ECOSYSTEMS
THAT SUPPORT MANY DIFFERENT
SPECIES LIKE BUGS, SQUIRRELS,
PLANTS AND GIANT ANTS OF COURSE.
A flashback shows Kyle holding the ant figure in front of Adam.
[Shouting, background chatter]
Kyle narrates, HAHA.
KIDDING AGAIN.
THAT WAS A GOOD ONE, RIGHT? RIGHT?
Sigfried, Adam Eric and Kyle stand on the paved path by the forest. Text reads, “Green Squad.”
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried and Adam walk on snow beside the wooden fence.
[Birds chirp]
Sigfried asks, SO, HAVE YOU ENJOYED
YOUR TIME IN THE FOREST SO FAR?
Adam says, I REALLY LOVED IT.
Sigfried says, THAT'S FANTASTIC AND
IF YOU LOVE SOMETHING, LIKE NATURE,
YOU WANT TO REALLY TAKE CARE
OF IT, RIGHT?
Adam says, YEAH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried says, WELL, I WAS THINKING THAT
MAYBE YOU COULD START A FOREST WALK
OF YOUR OWN AND HELP SPREAD THE
INFORMATION WITH OTHER PEOPLE
BECAUSE THEN MAYBE THEY'LL START
TO LOVE NATURE AND WANT TO TAKE
CARE OF IT TOO.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?
Adam says, I LOVE THAT IDEA.
Sigfried says, GREAT, LET'S GET TO IT!
Later, Sigfried and Adam sit at a dining room table with a large white piece of paper in front of them.
Sigfried says, SO, FIRST THING'S FIRST,
LET'S CREATE A SIGN TO GET THE WORD
OUT THERE ABOUT YOUR NATURE WALK.
Adam says, YEAH.
Adam and Sigfried draw on the paper.
[Upbeat music plays]
Adam says, I'M KINDA NERVOUS.
I DON'T REALLY KNOW
ANYBODY IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD.
WHAT IF THEY DON'T
WANT TO SIGN UP?
Sigfried says, THAT'S OKAY TO BE
NERVOUS SOMETIMES AND I TOTALLY
GET THAT BUT A PART OF BEING AN
ACTIVIST IS PUTTING YOURSELF OUT
THERE AND BEING BRAVE AND I GET
NERVOUS SOMETIMES TOO BUT I HAVE
SOME WAYS TO GET THROUGH
IT AND I CAN SHOW YOU.
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried says, SO, WHAT YOU DO IS YOU START
STANDING UP WITH YOUR FEET NEXT
TO EACH OTHER ON THE GROUND,
JUST LIKE WE'RE DOING RIGHT NOW,
FLAT ON THE GROUND.
CLOSE YOUR EYES, OKAY, AND WHAT
WE'RE GOING TO DO IS WE'RE GOING
TO TAKE SOME DEEP BREATHS
IN AND OUT AND COUNT THEM. OKAY?
Adam says, OKAY.
Sigfried says, OKAY. ONE, TWO, THREE.
Text reads, “One, two, three.”
Sigfried says, AND OUT. THREE, TWO, ONE.
OKAY, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Adam says, I FEEL READY.
Text reads, “Ready!”
Sigfried says, GREAT. COME ON.
Sigfried carries a small table and puts it on the sidewalk in front of Adam’s house. Adam carries the sign. They tape the sign to the table.
[Upbeat music plays]
Adam narrates, WHEN SIG TOLD ME
ABOUT THE NATURE WALK I WAS
REALLY HAPPY BECAUSE I LOVE
THAT IDEA AND I ALSO WANTED
TO SHARE THE LOVE WITH OTHER PEOPLE.
A boy with a red toque stops by the table.
Adam says, HEY YA, SEAN.
I'M LEADING A NATURE WALK.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN?
Sean says, YEAH SURE.
Sean asks, WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO THERE?
Adam says, SO, WE'RE GONNA BE HIKING,
IDENTIFYING TREES, OBSERVING THE
ACTS OF NATURE.
Sean says, SOUNDS GOOD TO ME.
CAN YOU SIGN ME UP PLEASE?
Adam says, SURE.
Sean says, THANKS.
HAVE A NICE DAY, ADAM.
Sigfried says, BYE.
Other people stop at the table.
Adam asks, WHAT'S YOUR NAME?
Text reads, “Hello.” “Hi. Hi.”
[Bloop]
Adam asks, WOULD YOU LIKE
TO JOIN US IN A NATURE WALK
I WILL BE LEADING?
A boy wearing a blue and green hat says, OKAY.
A boy wearing a blue, white and grey touque says, SOUNDS GOOD.
Adam asks, WHAT ARE YOUR NAMES?
The boy wearing a blue and green hat says, MARIO.
Adam asks, AND WHAT'S YOUR NAME?
The boy wearing a blue, white and grey touque says, DENNIS.
Adam tells Sigfried, I'LL WRITE MARIO,
YOU WRITE DENNIS.
Sigfried says, I GOT DENNIS, PERFECT.
Dennis says, THANK YOU.
Adam says, SEE YOU THERE.
Sigfried says, BYE.
Adam says, OH HEY.
THERE'S MY BROTHER ELIAS
AND HIS FRIEND EMERSON.
HEY, EMERSON.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN A
NATURE WALK I'LL BE LEADING?
Emerson says, YEAH, I LIKE
THE FOREST. I'LL GO ON A WALK.
Adam says, WE'LL BE IDENTIFYING TREES,
OBSERVING NATURE, AND HIKING.
Emerson says, THAT DOES SOUND FUN.
Adam says, OKAY, I'LL WRITE YOUR NAME.
Later, Adam sits at the dining room table.
He says, I THINK I AM A FOREST FRIEND
BECAUSE I'VE LEARNED A LOT
DURING THESE MISSIONS
AND I'M PROUD OF MYSELF.
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried narrates, HUMANS HAVE
A LONG HISTORY OF LOOKING
AFTER FORESTS.
Text reads, “All You Can Eat Bufforest.”
Sigfried narrates, FOR THOUSANDS
OF YEARS WE GREW FOOD FORESTS.
OVER MANY GENERATIONS ANCIENT
INDIGENOUS PEOPLE SHAPED THE
FORESTS INTO AMAZING PLACES
THAT GREW NUTS, FRUITS
AND VEGETABLES.
EVERYWHERE YOU LOOKED
THERE WAS SOMETHING TO EAT.
THE TALLEST TREES GREW NUTS
AND LARGE FRUIT AND MEDIUM
TREES GREW SMALLER FRUIT.
BUSHES GREW BERRIES.
THERE WERE HERBS AND SPICES.
AND IN THE GROUND WERE THINGS
LIKE CARROTS AND POTATOES.
WHEN HUMANS WORK WITH NATURE,
WE CAN INCREASE THE BIODIVERSITY
OF THE FOREST.
A FEW OF THESE FOOD FORESTS
STILL EXIST AND PEOPLE ARE
GROWING NEW ONES. SO COOL.
OH, I'M SO FULL.
Sigfried, Kyle, Adam and Eric stand behind tall grass. Tex reads, “Green Squad.”
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle walks on the sidewalk towards the table. Text beside him reads, “Hey.” Text beside Adam and Sigfried reads, “Hey! Hey!”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, HEY, ADAM AND SIG.
SO, HOW DID THE NATURE WALK
SIGN UPS GO?
Adam says, IT WAS AWESOME AND
WE GOT FIVE PEOPLE TO SIGN UP.
Kyle says, WOW.
IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE TRULY
BECOME A FRIEND OF THE FOREST.
Sigfried says, AND NOW HE CAN
HELP HIS NEW FRIENDS
BECOME FRIENDS WITH THE
FOREST AS WELL.
Adam says, THANK YOU SQUAD FOR
TEACHING ME HOW TO HELP THE FOREST.
Sigfried says, ANYTIME.
Kyle says, HIGH FIVES ALL AROUND.
They all high five.
[Hands slap]
Adam cheers, YAY!
The Green Squad makes a human pyramid with Sigfried, Eric and Kyle on the bottom row and Lisa and Skakira on the top.
Text reads, “Squad Tip.”
[Lively music plays]
Eric stands behind a table. A photograph of white hydrangeas appears to his right. A bunch of bananas and a small white plate with a brown banana peel on it rest on the table in front of him.
He says, I REMEMBER MY MOTHER
WOULD GROW HUGE FLOWERS
OUT IN THE FRONT YARD WHEN
I WAS A KID, SPECIFICALLY,
WHITE HYDRANGEAS.
NEIGHBOURS, FAMILES AND FRIENDS
WOULD ALWAYS COME AND COMMENT
ON THEIR BEAUTY AND ENORMOUS SIZE.
FINALLY MY MOM TOLD ME HER SECRET.
BANANA PEELS.
Eric imitates a monkey, HOO HOO HAHA.
HOO HOO HAHA.
He says, AFTER HAVING EATEN A BANANA
OR COOKING WITH IT JUST SIMPLY
PLACE THE BANANA PEEL AT
THE STEM OF YOUR PLANTS.
BANANAS ARE FULL OF POTASSIUM
WHICH IS A SUPER FOOD FOR PLANTS.
BECAUSE THEY BROWN QUICKLY LIKE
THIS ONE THEY CAMOUFLAGE WITH
THE SOIL SO YOU WON'T EVEN
KNOW THAT THEY'RE THERE.
MY MOTHER AND I STILL PLANT
BANANA PEELS IN OUR GARDEN
DURING THE SPRING,
SUMMER, FALL AND WINTER.
I EVEN TRIED IT OUT IN MY VEGGIE
GARDEN AND IT WORKS THERE TOO.
YOUR FLOWERS WON'T GET DAMAGED
BECAUSE CRITTERS LIKE SQUIRRELS
DON'T LIKE BANANA PEELS SO THEY
WON'T COME AND TURN UP THE SOIL.
SO, WHY DON'T YOU GIVE IT A TRY
AT HOME?
SAVE YOU BANANA PEELS AND YOUR
PLANTS WILL THANK YOU FOR IT.
The Green Squad poses. Text reads, “Check-In.”
Kyle, Shakira, Eric, Lisa and Sigfried sit around a small table with a tablet on it.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, WE'RE READY TO
CHECK IN WITH ADAM.
[Claps hands]
Adam appears on the tablet screen.
Adam says, I'M EXCITED TO SHARE WHAT
I HAVE LEARNED WITH MY FRIENDS.
Adam and Elias stand in a parking lot. Mario, Dennis and an adult wave to them.
Children say, HI, ADAM.
Adam says, HI.
A boy asks, HOW ARE YOU DOING?
Adam says, GREAT.
ARE YOU GUYS EXCITED?
Mario and Dennis shout,
YEAH, SURE, SURE.
Adam says, LET'S GO DO THE WALK.
[Shakira giggles]
Adam narrates, THE SCAVENGER HUNT
AND THE TREE PLANTING REALLY HELPED
BECAUSE DURING THE TREE PLANTING
WE ACTUALLY LEARNED A LOT
ABOUT TREES.
Sigfried says, IT'S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
TO SEE ADAM SHOW US HOW, REALLY,
ANYBODY CAN GET INVOLVED IN
PLANTING TREES IN THEIR CITY
WHEREVER THEY ARE
AND ANYBODY CAN DO IT.
Shakira says, YEAH, AND THEN IT BECOMES
A PERSONAL THING BECAUSE IT'S YOUR
TREE AND YOU CAN GO BACK AND
VISIT IT AND WATCH THE TREE GROW
AS THE YEARS GO BY.
Eric says, ADAM, I DEFINITELY WANT
TO SEE PICTURES OF YOU AND THAT
TREE AS YOU BOTH GROW UP.
Adam uses a tablet to take a photograph of a leaf.
[Click, background shouting]
Adam narrates, FOR THE SCAVENGER HUNT
WE ALSO LEARNED A LOT.
Adam stands with his friends by trees.
Adam says, OKAY GUYS, SO WE'RE
GONNA GO ON A NATURE WALK.
WE'RE GONNA SEE TREES, RACCOONS,
FROGS, SQUIRRELS AND MORE.
AND WE'RE GONNA HAVE SOME FUN.
IS EVERYBODY READY?
Adam’s friends shout, YES, LET'S GO!
Adam says, WE STAY ON THE PATHS
BECAUSE WE MIGHT BE STEPPING
ON LITTLE BABY TREES AND WE DON'T
WANT THAT.
OH LOOK GUYS, THAT LOOKS LIKE A
SAPLING BUT WE LEAVE THEM ALONE
SO THAT'S WHY WE STAY ON THE PATH.
Eric says, HE'S GONNA BE LIKE SOME
FUTURE, LIKE, CANADA PARKS FOREST
TOUR GUIDE.
Sigfried says, HE WAS ON THE BALL WITH THAT.
Eric says, HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING.
HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT.
"STAY ON THE PATH."
Shakira says, HE SAID IT NICER THAN THAT.
Kyle says, WASN'T THAT SO COOL THOUGH?
I REMEMBER TELLING HIM, I WAS
LIKE - YOU NEED TO STAY ON THE
PATH, HERE'S HOW TO SPOT
SAPLINGS, NATIVE TREES.
THERE'S SO MANY THINGS THAT WE
ENDED UP TEACHING HIM THAT NOW
HE'S GOING OUT TO TEACH HIS
FRIENDS AND YOU KNOW THAT
THEY'RE GONNA TEACH THEIR
FRIENDS AND THEIR FRIENDS AND
SUDDENLY WE'VE GOT A WHOLE
COMMUNITY WHO KNOWS HOW
TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FORESTS.
Shakira says, HE'S SUCH A GOOD LEADER TOO.
Sigfried says, YEAH.
ADAM WAS REALLY RECEPTIVE TO
WHAT WE HAD TO SAY, I THINK, TO
ALL OF US AND THAT WAS AMAZING.
Adam says, OH LOOK AT THAT BABY TREE.
THERE'S A RIVER RIGHT THERE.
I THINK IT' GOING GREAT.
SO TO CONTINUE TO HELP THE
FOREST AND BE A FOREST FRIEND,
I WOULD REALLY REALLY LIKE TO DO
SOME MORE WALKS BECAUSE I WANT
TO BECOME A BIGGER FRIEND OF
THE FOREST AND I ALSO WANT MY
FRIENDS TO BECOME FRIENDS OF
THE FOREST TOO.
BUT I THINK THAT ALSO MAKE
THEM CARE MORE ABOUT NATURE.
DID YOU GUYS HAVE FUN?
Adam’s friends say, YEAH!
One of his friends says, I GOT SOME
FRESH AIR TOO.
Adam says, THANKS FOR COMING.
I REALLY THINK THE
SQUAD WOULD BE PROUD OF ME.
Kyle says, I AM DEFINITELY PROUD.
Shakira says, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE
WHAT HE'S GONNA DO IN THE
FUTURE TOO.
Lisa says, WITH MORE FRIENDS.
Shakira says, MAYBE WITH THE
SCHOOL NEXT TIME HE CAN DO IT.
Eric says, I LOVE HOW HE DANCES.
HE DID THE ADAM TREE DANCE
AND HE WAS DANCING ON THE WALK.
I MEAN, THIS GUY IS FULL OF
BEANS AND FULL OF ENERGY.
ADAM YOU'RE A TRUE
FRIEND OF THE FOREST.
Kyle says, I'D SAY HE'S A B.F.F.
BEST FOREST FRIEND.
The Green Squad cheers, GO ADAM!
End credits roll.
[Upbeat music plays]
A child says, WHEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids.”
[Child giggles]
A blue eye peers out of the Apartment Eleven Productions logo. Text beneath it reads, “Apartment Eleven Productions.”
[Squeaking]
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids” plus “Apartment Eleven Productions,” “Original.” A purple circle with a ring attached to each side appears over “Apartment Eleven.”
[Child giggles, pop, playful music plays]
Kyle, Sigfried and Eric walk on a snowy path between bare trees.
[Peaceful music plays]
Sigfried says, THERE'S SERIOUSLY
NOTHING LIKE A WALK IN THE FOREST.
I LOVE FORESTS.
Kyle says, ME TOO.
FORESTS AND I - WE'RE LIKE THIS.
BESTIES BASICALLY.
Eric says, AND TODAY, WE'RE
GONNA MEET A KID WHO ALSO
WANTS TO BE A FOREST FRIEND.
Sigfried says, LET'S GO MEET HIM.
Kyle, Sigfried and Eric walk out of the fore and on to a small paved path. Animated question marks appear above their heads.
[Upbeat music plays, bird caws]
Sigfried asks, NONE OF US LOOKED AT
DIRECTIONS DID WE?
Kyle says, NOPE.
Eric says, NADA!
Kyle points and says, LET'S TRY THIS WAY.
Eric says, THAT'S THE WAY.
Sigfried says, FANTASTIC!
Red text over yellow and orange bursts reads, “Fantastic!”
[Upbeat music plays]
The Green Squad smiles. Yellow and red text reads, “Eric.” To the right of the text, Eric holds a reusable shopping bag and smiles. His chin-length black hair is straight and he wears a black t-shirt and brown overalls.
Red and orange text reads, “Lisa.” To the left of the text, Lisa wears her brown hair in small braids. She wears a dark red blouse with white flecks with light blue jeans.
Purple and blue text reads, “Sigfried.” To the right of the text, Sigfried wears a black beret over his pale curly blond hair. He wears a red long-sleeve shirt.
Green and blue text reads, “Shakira.” To the left of the text, a girl with long black hair turns. She wears a black sweater and ripped blue jeans. A pink floral scarf is knotted around her neck.
Dark and light blue text reads, “Kyle.” To the right of the text, Kyle wears a red backpack. His dark brown hair reaches beneath his ears.
White text reads, “TVOKIDS presents.” Below that, green text with dark green dots reads, “Green.” Below that, pink text reads, “Squad.” The Green Squad poses beneath the text.
An electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
A slender boy sits beside a table with a globe on it. He wears a grey and black long-sleeved shirt. He has short brown hair and dark brown eyes. Pink text reads, “Adam.”
Adam says, HI, MY NAME IS ADAM.
I AM NINE YEARS OLD.
[Adam makes whooshing noises]
He says, I HAVE LOTS OF HOBBIES.
I LIKE TO PLAY PIANO.
Animated green music notes and the text, “La la” rise from a keyboard.
Adam continues, I LIKE TO SWIM
AND I LIKE TO READ.
I REALLY LIKE WRITING SONGS
ABOUT NATURE WITH MY BROTHER.
IT'S REALLY FUN.
WE MAKE VIDEOS THAT ARE
ALL ABOUT SAVING THE PLANET.
I LOVE SO MANY
THINGS ABOUT NATURE.
I LIKE TREES, BEES,
WHALES AND MUSHROOMS.
On a beach, Adam and a smaller boy stop and put a piece of garbage in a blue bag. Both wear winter jackets and small piles of snow fill divots in the sand.
Adam narrates, MY FAMILY USED TO
LIVE BY THE BEACH.
WE WOULD USUALLY GO TO THE BEACH
EVERY MONTH AND JUST LOOK
AROUND FOR SOME GARBAGE AND PICK
SOME UP WITH GLOVES AND WE WOULD
USUALLY FILL A BIG BAG FULL OF GARBAGE.
I LIKE HELPING THE BEACH BECAUSE
EVERY TIME WE PICK UP GARBAGE
I FEEL LIKE THERE'S A FISH OR
AN ANIMAL THAT I JUST SAVED.
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO
HELP NATURE BECAUSE EVERYONE
CAN HELP A LITTLE BIT
IN A BIG PROBLEM.
NOW MY FAMILY MOVED AND WE DON'T
LIVE NEAR THE BEACH ANYMORE.
NOW WE LIVE NEAR THE FOREST.
I WANT TO HELP THE FOREST
LIKE I HELPED THE BEACH.
SO, I NEED YOU HELP SQUAD!
Text beside Adam reads, “I need your help!”
Outside, Eric, Kyle and Sigfried walk on a city sidewalk.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, WE MADE IT.
I'M SO EXCITED TO MEET ADAM.
Kyle says, YEAH.
HE'S AWESOME AND ALREADY LOVES
TAKING CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT.
Soon, Sigfried knocks on a door. Kyle and Eric stand behind him on a porch.
[Knocking]
Adam opens the door.
Adam says, HEY, SQUAD.
The squad says, HEY.
Text beside Adam reads, “Hey.” Text beside the squad reads, “Hey. Hey. Hey.”
Eric says, YOU MUST BE ADAM.
Adam says, YES, I AM.
Eric says, I'M ERIC.
Sigfried says, I'M SIGFRIED.
Kyle says, AND I'M KYLE.
Adam says, COME IN.
Adam says, HERE'S MY DAD, MY MOM,
AND MY LITTLE BROTHER ELIAS.
Green text beside a man with short brown hair reads, “Dad.” Yellow text bey a woman with long, curly dark brown hair reads, “Mom.” Pink text beside a boy with short auburn hair reads, “Brother Elias.”
Everyone says, HI.
Kyle says, NICE TO MEET YA.
SO, WE HEAR THAT YOU GUYS
ARE ALL ABOUT GOING GREEN.
Eric says, YOU KNOW; FORESTS
DO SO MUCH FOR US.
I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT
THAT WE HELP THEM OUT AS
MUCH AS WE CAN.
Kyle says, AND ADAM, I THINK WE'RE
GONNA HAVE NO PROBLEM MAKING
YOU A FRIEND OF THE FOREST.
Adam says, I'M SO EXCITED.
Eric says, WE ARE TOO.
LET'S GET OUT THERE!
Adam, Eric, Sigfried and Kyle jump off snow rocks. Text reads, “Green Squad.”
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Later, Eric and Adam walk on a paved path by trees.
Eric says, A REALLY AWESOME WAY
TO HELP OUT THE FOREST IS BY
PLANTING TREES.
SO MANY TOWNS AND CITIES HAVE
TREE PLANTING EVENTS IN THE FALL
AND SPRING.
WE JUST HAVE TO
LOOK AROUND FOR THEM.
BUT PLANTING TREES IS
NOT AS EASY AS IT SOUNDS.
THAT'S WHY I FOUND US TWO TREE
PLANTING EXPERT SUPER STARS.
LET'S GO MEET THEM.
[Upbeat music plays]
A woman and man stand in a snowy clearing. The woman wears a black touque and jacket, blue jeans and blue gloves. The man wears a black, red and yellow touque, black jacket and bright red pants. He has a black beard and moustache. He holds a shovel.
Text reads, Monica and Mark. Natural Environment Specialists.”
Eric says, HEY MARK.
HEY MONICA.
THIS IS MY BUDDY ADAM.
Monica and Mark say, HEY, ADAM.
Adam says, HI.
Monica says, WE'RE SO GLAD YOU'RE
ABLE TO JOIN US AND PLANT SOME
TREES TODAY.
WE GOT A SURPRISE EARLY
DUMP OF SNOW LAST
NIGHT BUT IT'S OKAY.
THE GROUND'S NOT FROZEN
SO WE CAN STILL PLANT.
Eric says, IT'S SWEET THAT YOU CAN
STILL PLANT STUFF WHEN IT'S
THIS COLD.
Mark says, YEAH.
GENERALLY CITIES WILL
PLANT TREES IN THE
SPRING TIME WHEN
THE ROOTS HAVE A GOOD
CHANCE TO ESTABLISH.
Monica says, WE CAN ALSO PLANT
IN THE FALL BECAUSE
TREES ARE BASICALLY
GOING TO SLEEP FOR THE
SEASON SO IT'S EASY TO
TRANSFER THEM FROM
THE POTS TO THE GROUND.
Adam says, I NEVER PLANTED
A TREE SO I'M REALLY EXCITED.
Monica says, LET'S PLANT SOME TREES.
[Lively music plays]
Adam, Eric, Monica and Mark pick up shovels.
Eric says, OOH.
Monica says, YOU WANT THE HOLE
TO BE BIG ENOUGH FOR THE PLANT
TO GROW.
THAT MEANS WE WANT IT TWO TIMES
AS WIDE AS THE POT AND JUST AS
DEEP AS THE SOIL IN THE POT.
Eric says, WE GOT THIS! READY?
Adam says, SET.
Adam, Mark, Monica and Eric say, DIG!
They dig.
[Rustling, lively music plays]
Mark says, WE'RE MAKING THE
TREE A REAL NICE PLACE TO LIVE.
Eric asks, NOW WHAT DO WE
DO IF WE ENCOUNTER ROOTS?
Monica says, IF IT'S A SMALL ROOT
YOU CAN JUST CUT IT WITH
YOUR SHOVEL.
IF IT'S TOO BIG WE'LL MOVE
THE HOLE A LITTLE BIT OVER.
Eric asks, BUT IT IS OKAY TO CUT IT?
Monica says, YEAH.
Eric says, PERFECT.
Marks says, SO, WE'RE GONNA
PUT OUR PLANT IN.
SO, LET'S SEE IF IT
LINES UP WITH THE SOIL. YEAH.
Eric cheers, GO TEAM!
Everyone high fives.
[Cheering, chuckling]
Adam asks, WHAT KIND OF
PLANTS ARE WE PLANTING?
Yellow text reads, “Sugar Maple.”
[Popping]
Monica explains, THIS IS A SUGAR MAPLE.
IT'S A NATIVE SPECIES.
WE ONLY PLANT NATIVE SPECIES IN
ALL OF OUR TREE PLANTING EVENTS.
[Bird caws]
Mark explains, NATIVE SPECIES ARE TREES
THAT ARE INDIGENOUS TO OUR AREA
AND HAVE GROWN HERE FOR A
VERY VERY VERY LONG TIME.
Eric explains, NATIVE SPECIES ARE
ALWAYS THE BEST TO PLANT NO MATTER
WHAT YOU'RE PLANTING.
Mark says, YEAH.
THAT'S BECAUSE NATIVE SPECIES
THAT ARE LOCAL TO HERE ARE THE
MOST HELPFUL FOR THE ECOSYSTEM
AND SUPPORTIVE TO THE BIRDS
INSECTS AND ANIMALS AROUND HERE.
[Popping]
Adam says, NATIVE TREES IT IS THEN.
Mark gives Adam a thumbs up.
Monica says, ALL RIGHT THEN.
SO, NOW IT'S TIME TO GET
THE PLANT OUT OF THE POT.
[Upbeat music plays, bird caws]
Eric says, YOU HOLD THE PLANT,
YOU MAKE A PEACE SIGN AROUND
THE STEM OF THE PLANT, UPSIDE
DOWN AND YOU'LL SEE THE PLANT
COMES OUT.
I'M GONNA LET YOU DO IT, OKAY?
Adam says, OKAY.
Eric says, SO, YOU DO THE
PEACE SIGN TECHNIQUE.
THERE YOU GO, BE VERY CAREFUL.
OUPELAYE. YOU DON'T WANT TO GET...
OOOHH! THERE YOU GO!
Monica says, SO, BEFORE YOU PUT THE
PLANT DOWN WE WANT TO MASSAGE
THE ROOTS A LITTLE.
THE REASON IS THE PLANT HAS BEEN
GROWING IN A POT FOR A LONG TIME
AND THE ROOTS ARE GROWING
IN A CIRCLE BECAUSE OF THAT.
SO, WE JUST WANT TO PULL THEM
OUT A LITTLE SO THAT WHEN THEY
GROW IN THE GROUND THEY CAN
GO OUTWARDS.
[Bird caws]
Eric says, GO FOR IT.
GO FOR IT, ADAM.
Mark says, YEAH, IT'S LIKE
A LITTLE MASSAGE FOR THE ROOTS.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, SQUEEZE HERE, RIGHT?
A LITTLE BIT.
Monica says, JUST A LITTLE.
Eric says, SQUEEZE THE...
Monica says, THAT'S PERFECT.
Adam asks, CAN WE PUT IT IN?
Monica says, YEAH, JUST PUT IT
STRAIGHT UP.
Adam puts tree in the hole.
Eric cheers, YEAH, YOU JUST DID IT!
YOU PLANTED YOUR FIRST TREE.
WOOHOO!
[Applause]
Eric says, OKAY, WELL WE'RE NOT
DONE YET BUT YOU JUST PUT YOUR
FIRST TREE IN THE GROUND. YEAH!
Mark says, WE'RE GONNA MAKE THE
TREE FEEL REAL COZY HERE SO WE'RE
GONNA USE ALL THE SOIL TO FILL ALL
AROUND IT.
Adam says, AH!
[Upbeat music plays]
Monica explains, IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT
TO PACK THE SOIL IN TIGHTLY BECAUSE
WE WANT A GOOD CONNECTION
BETWEEN THE ROOTS AND THE SOIL.
YOU CAN PACK IT IN WITH YOUR
HANDS AND YOU CAN EVEN STEP ALL
AROUND THE PLANT.
Eric says, THERE YOU GO BUT NOT
ON THE TREE.
[Laughter]
Adam sways as he walks around the tree.
Eric says, OH, THE MOVES ADAM.
IT'S THE TREE DANCE.
Monica says, LOOKS GOOD.
[Upbeat music continues]
Mark says, WE HAVE ONE MORE
STEP, WE'RE GONNA ADD MULCH
AROUND THE BASE.
Eric cheers, MULCH TIME!
Mark says, LET'S GO!
Eric says, WOO!
Mark says, WE'RE GONNA FILL UP
THE BUCKETS WITH MULCH.
WE'LL FILL THESE AND
WE'LL TAKE IT TO THE TREES.
[Whooshing]
Mark continues, WE'RE GONNA DUMP
THE MULCH ALL AROUND THE TREE O
N THE OUTSIDE.
SO, WHAT IT'S GONNA DO IS IT'S
GONNA KEEP THE MOISTURE AROUND
THE PLANT AND IT'S GONNA
BREAKDOWN AND INWARD TO
THE SOIL SO IT HAS MORE MINERALS
AND THINGS LIKE THAT FOR GROWING.
AND WE'VE DONE IT. YOU'VE PLANTED
YOUR FIRST TREE.
Text reads, “Yay! Yay! Yay!”
[Cheering]
Eric says, GOOD JOB.
ON TOP, HIGH FIVE!
THIS SUGAR MAPLE IS READY FOR
A GREAT LIFE IN THE FOREST.
LET'S DO THE ADAM TREE DANCE.
Everyone says, YEAH!
Mark, Adam, Eric and Monica stand and dance beside the small tree.
They all say, WOO!
Eric says, LET'S HOPE THAT THE
TREE GETS THIS BIG!
Eric lifts Adam high over his head.
Everyone cheers, WHOA!
[Laughter]
[Upbeat music plays]
Adam says, I LOVED THE TREE PLANTING
BECAUSE I LOVED STOMPING ON THE
FLOOR FOR THE TREE DANCE
AND I'VE NEVER PLANTED A
TREE BEFORE.
I ALSO LIKED IT WHEN EVERYBODY
STARTED DANCING THE TREE DANCE
WITH ME AND I LOVED MAKING
IT UP.
Monica says, ISN'T THIS AMAZING?
THESE NATIVE TREES ARE NOW
A PART OF OUR URBAN FOREST.
Adam asks, URBAN FOREST?
Mark says, OH YEAH, THE URBAN FOREST
IS A COLLECTION OF ALL THE TREES AND
SHRUBS WITHIN THE CITY.
ON PUBLIC SPACE, IN YOUR
SCHOOLYARD AND AROUND HOMES
AND APARTMENTS.
Monica says, SO, ALL TREES TAKE GASES
THAT ARE BAD FOR US LIKE CARBON
DIOXIDE AND OTHER POLLUTANTS
OUT OF THE AIR AND THAT'S REALLY
IMPORTANT IN BIG CITIES LIKE
WHERE WE ARE BECAUSE THERE'S
SO MANY PEOPLE AND CARS.
[Birds caw]
Mark says, YEAH AND THEY PROVIDE
SHADE FOR US TO WALK UNDER AND
TREES ARE A REALLY IMPORTANT
TOOL IN COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE.
Eric says, MAN, I CAN LISTEN TO YOU GUYS
TALK ABOUT TREES ALL DAY.
Adam agrees, SAME.
Eric says, BUT THERE'S ANOTHER
MISSION AND KYLE'S WAITING.
Adam says, THANK YOU FOR HELPING
ME PLANT MY FIRST TREE.
Mark says, WELL, THANK YOU AND
PLEASE COME BACK IN THE SPRING
TO PLANT SOME MORE.
Adam, Monica and Mark say, BYE.
Eric says, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, TAKE CARE.
Mark says, BYE, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
Adam says, YES.
Mark says, TREE YA LATER!
Text reads, “Tree ya later!”
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric narrates, OKAY, TAKE A DEEP BREATH.
[Inhaling]
Eric narrates, YOU KNOW WHO YOU
CAN THANK FOR THAT?
TREES OF COURSE.
A TYPICAL TREE PRODUCES NEARLY
ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY
KILOGRAMS OF OXYGEN EACH YEAR.
THAT'S ABOUT THE
WEIGHT OF A TIGER.
TWO FULL GROWN TREES PROVIDE
ENOUGH OXYGEN FOR A FAMILY
OF FOUR.
THEY ALSO HELP KEEP THE
PLANET COOL AND FIGHT POLLUTION.
NOT THAT KINDA COOL.
YEAH, THAT KIND.
FIFTEEN BILLION TREES
GET CUT EVERY YEAR.
[Cracking]
Eric narrates, THAT'S TWO FOR
EVERY HUMAN ON EARTH.
SO, PLANTING TREES
IN SUPER IMPORTANT.
PROTECTING THE ONES THAT ALREADY
EXIST HELPS FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE
AND STAY COOL.
An animated hat and sunglasses appear on Eric.
Eric narrates, THAT'S NOT WHAT
I MEAN BUT THESE SHADES ARE AWESOME.
[Whooshing]
Eric, Adam, Sigfried and Kyle skip on a path. Text reads, “Green Squad.”
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
Kyle stands in front of a wooden fence. Adam walks to him.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, HEY, ADAM, HOW'S IT GOING?
Adam says, GOOD.
Kyle says, SO, I FIGURED TO HELP THE
FOREST WE SHOULD PROBABLY EXPLORE
THE FOREST, RIGHT?
Adam says, LET'S GO.
Kyle narrates, PLANTING A TREE WAS
A GREAT FIRST STEP BUT A FOREST
IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST TREES.
IT'S A WHOLE ECOSYSTEM, MADE UP
OF MANY SMALL PARTS THAT ALL
WORK TOGETHER.
Adam sits by fallen trees. Kyle kneels beside him. Green and purple text reads, “Understory.”
Kyle says, SO, THERE'S THIS WHOLE
PART OF THE FOREST CALLED THE
UNDERSTORY, WHICH IS EVERYTHING
FROM THE FOREST FLOOR - FROM THE
GROUND TO THE TREETOPS.
INSECTS, BUGS, VINES, BUSHES,
SAPLINGS, A TON OF THE THINGS.
Adam says, THAT LOOKS LIKE
THE TREE I PLANTED.
Kyle says, AND DOESN'T IT KINDA
LOOK LIKE A STICK THOUGH?
SEE, THAT'S THE THING IS THAT
SAPLINGS CAN BE SO SMALL AND
SOMETIMES IF WE STRAY OFF THE
FOREST PATH WE CAN STEP ON ALL
THESE TINY LITTLE SAPLINGS THAT
ARE TRYING THEIR BEST TO GROW.
Adam says, I ALWAYS NEED TO STAY
ON THE FOREST PATH BUT I NEVER
KNEW WHY.
Kyle explains, SAPLINGS ARE AN
IMPORTANT PART OF THE UNDERSTORY
AND THE UNDERSTORY IS AN
IMPORTANT PART OF OUR ECOSYSTEM.
THE ECOSYSTEM IS
EVERYTHING THAT'S IN THE FOREST.
FROM THE ANIMALS THAT LIVE IN
IT, TO THE INSECTS, THE TREES.
AND THAT MAKES UP A
FOREST OF BIODIVERSITY.
AND THE BIODIVERSITY, OF COURSE,
IS JUST A FANCY WORD FOR ALL
LIFE LIVING IN AN AREA.
Adam says, THAT'S SO COOL.
Kyle says, IT TOTALLY IS AND THAT
BRINGS US TO OR NEXT ADVENTURE.
Kyle puts his red backpack down on a dirt path and opens it. He takes a clipboard out.
[Upbeat music continues]
Kyle says, HEY, ADAM, CHECK THIS OUT.
Adam asks, A SCAVENGER HUNT?
A heading on a piece of paper on the clipboard reads, “Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt.” A list beneath the heading has empty circles beside each line. The lines read, “A seed,” “Something dead!” “Something alive!” “A colour,” “A good hiding spot,” “A native tree.”
Kyle says, NOT JUST ANY SCAVENGER HUNT.
A BIODIVERSITY SCAVENGER HUNT.
THIS IS ALL ABOUT OBSERVING THE
FOREST BEYOND JUST THE TREES AND
REALLY APPRECIATING THE
AWESOME BIODIVERSITY AT WORK.
EVEN WITH SNOW ON THE GROUND
THERE'S STILL SO MUCH TO SEE.
Adam asks, SHOULD WE TAKE PHOTOS
TO PROVE WE FOUND IT?
Kyle says, I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK.
THAT WAY WE CAN OBSERVE THE
NATURE WITHOUT DISTURBING IT.
Sigfried walks down trail behind Adam and Kyle.
Sigfried says, HEY, YOU TWO.
DID SOMEBODY SAY SCAVENGER HUNT?
Kyle says, OF COURSE WE DID.
HERE'S THE LIST AND THE
RULES ARE - STAY ON THE PATH.
DON'T DISTURB THE NATURE.
Sigfried and Kyle each hold a clipboard.
Sigfried says, ALL OVER IT!
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, GUESS WE BETTER GET MOVING.
Adam takes a photograph with a tablet. Kyle take a photograph with his cellphone. Checkmarks appear on an animated biodiversity scavenger hunt checklist.
[Clicking, chiming, upbeat music continues]
Sigfried says, OOH, THIS IS GONNA BE THE
PERFECT HIDING SPOT.
Sigfried takes photograph with a camera. A checkmark appears on the animated biodiversity scavenger hunt checklist.
[Clicking, chiming]
Kyle notices an ant figure. He smiles and picks it up. He meets Adam and Sigfried back at the wooden fence.
Kyle says, OKIDOKI.
SCAVENGER HUNT COMPLETE.
LET'S SEE WHAT WE FOUND.
[Upbeat music plays]
Adam says, I FOUND AN OAK LEAF
WHICH COMES FROM AN OAK TREE,
WHICH IS A NATIVE TREE.
Sigfried says, WELL, I FOUND AN
AMAZING HIDING SPOT.
CHECK OUT THIS HOLE.
Kyle says, WELL, I THINK I FOUND
THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THING.
I DIDN'T THINK I WAS GONNA
FIND ANYTHING ALIVE HERE IN THE
WINTER BUT CHECK OUT THIS MOTH.
Adam says, WHOA. IT LANDED RIGHT
ON THE TREE.
Kyle says, YEAH.
DID YOU HAVE A LOT OF FUN?
Adam says, YEAH.
Kyle says, BUT I DID FIND SOMETHING
A LITTLE STRANGE IN THE WOODS.
Sigfried says, OH?
Adam says, OH...
[Tense music plays]
Kyle says, ADAM, CLOSE YOUR EYES.
YOU CAN OPEN THEM.
Kyle holds the ant figure in front of Adam’s face. Adam opens his eyes and startles backwards.
[Dramatic music plays]
Kyle shouts, AH, IT'S A GIANT ANT!
OOOOHH! AAAHH!
Adam says, THAT IS A WEIRD THING
TO FIND IN THE FOREST.
Kyle moves the ant towards Adam’s face. Kyle moves the ant towards his own face.
[Adam shouts, upbeat music plays, Kyle shouts]
Sigfried says, HOW ABOUT WE TAKE A WALK AND
I'LL TALK TO YOU ABOUT OUR NEXT
MISSION BUT YOU CAN KEEP THE ANT.
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
Animated trees sway and smile. Text beside them reads, “Hey.” “Yay!” “Hi!”
[Upbeat music plays, birds chirp]
Kyle narrates, DID YOU KNOW THAT
TREES IN FORESTS LIVE LONGER
THAN TREES GROWING ALL ALONE?
AND THEY COMMUNICATE
TO PROTECT EACH OTHER.
FOR EXAMPLE, IF AN ACACIA TREE
GETS MUNCHED ON BY A GIRAFFE IT
SENDS MESSAGES TO OTHER ACACIA
TREES WHO THEN PRODUCE CHEMICALS
THAT TASTE TERRIBLE TO GIRAFFES.
UNDER THE FOREST FLOOR TREE
ROOTS ARE CONNECTED BY A NETWORK
OF FUNGI THAT LOOK JUST LIKE A
HUMAN BRAIN. OH.
TREES USE THIS NETWORK TO SHARE
FOOD AND MEDICINE AND MAYBE A
LITTLE TICKLE.
HAHA, KIDDING.
Animated tree roots tickle Kyle.
[Kyle chuckles, whoosh]
Kyle narrates, HAHA, STOP.
I'M SUPER TICKLISH.
FORESTS ARE SMART ECOSYSTEMS
THAT SUPPORT MANY DIFFERENT
SPECIES LIKE BUGS, SQUIRRELS,
PLANTS AND GIANT ANTS OF COURSE.
A flashback shows Kyle holding the ant figure in front of Adam.
[Shouting, background chatter]
Kyle narrates, HAHA.
KIDDING AGAIN.
THAT WAS A GOOD ONE, RIGHT? RIGHT?
Sigfried, Adam Eric and Kyle stand on the paved path by the forest. Text reads, “Green Squad.”
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried and Adam walk on snow beside the wooden fence.
[Birds chirp]
Sigfried asks, SO, HAVE YOU ENJOYED
YOUR TIME IN THE FOREST SO FAR?
Adam says, I REALLY LOVED IT.
Sigfried says, THAT'S FANTASTIC AND
IF YOU LOVE SOMETHING, LIKE NATURE,
YOU WANT TO REALLY TAKE CARE
OF IT, RIGHT?
Adam says, YEAH.
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried says, WELL, I WAS THINKING THAT
MAYBE YOU COULD START A FOREST WALK
OF YOUR OWN AND HELP SPREAD THE
INFORMATION WITH OTHER PEOPLE
BECAUSE THEN MAYBE THEY'LL START
TO LOVE NATURE AND WANT TO TAKE
CARE OF IT TOO.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?
Adam says, I LOVE THAT IDEA.
Sigfried says, GREAT, LET'S GET TO IT!
Later, Sigfried and Adam sit at a dining room table with a large white piece of paper in front of them.
Sigfried says, SO, FIRST THING'S FIRST,
LET'S CREATE A SIGN TO GET THE WORD
OUT THERE ABOUT YOUR NATURE WALK.
Adam says, YEAH.
Adam and Sigfried draw on the paper.
[Upbeat music plays]
Adam says, I'M KINDA NERVOUS.
I DON'T REALLY KNOW
ANYBODY IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD.
WHAT IF THEY DON'T
WANT TO SIGN UP?
Sigfried says, THAT'S OKAY TO BE
NERVOUS SOMETIMES AND I TOTALLY
GET THAT BUT A PART OF BEING AN
ACTIVIST IS PUTTING YOURSELF OUT
THERE AND BEING BRAVE AND I GET
NERVOUS SOMETIMES TOO BUT I HAVE
SOME WAYS TO GET THROUGH
IT AND I CAN SHOW YOU.
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried says, SO, WHAT YOU DO IS YOU START
STANDING UP WITH YOUR FEET NEXT
TO EACH OTHER ON THE GROUND,
JUST LIKE WE'RE DOING RIGHT NOW,
FLAT ON THE GROUND.
CLOSE YOUR EYES, OKAY, AND WHAT
WE'RE GOING TO DO IS WE'RE GOING
TO TAKE SOME DEEP BREATHS
IN AND OUT AND COUNT THEM. OKAY?
Adam says, OKAY.
Sigfried says, OKAY. ONE, TWO, THREE.
Text reads, “One, two, three.”
Sigfried says, AND OUT. THREE, TWO, ONE.
OKAY, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Adam says, I FEEL READY.
Text reads, “Ready!”
Sigfried says, GREAT. COME ON.
Sigfried carries a small table and puts it on the sidewalk in front of Adam’s house. Adam carries the sign. They tape the sign to the table.
[Upbeat music plays]
Adam narrates, WHEN SIG TOLD ME
ABOUT THE NATURE WALK I WAS
REALLY HAPPY BECAUSE I LOVE
THAT IDEA AND I ALSO WANTED
TO SHARE THE LOVE WITH OTHER PEOPLE.
A boy with a red toque stops by the table.
Adam says, HEY YA, SEAN.
I'M LEADING A NATURE WALK.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN?
Sean says, YEAH SURE.
Sean asks, WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO THERE?
Adam says, SO, WE'RE GONNA BE HIKING,
IDENTIFYING TREES, OBSERVING THE
ACTS OF NATURE.
Sean says, SOUNDS GOOD TO ME.
CAN YOU SIGN ME UP PLEASE?
Adam says, SURE.
Sean says, THANKS.
HAVE A NICE DAY, ADAM.
Sigfried says, BYE.
Other people stop at the table.
Adam asks, WHAT'S YOUR NAME?
Text reads, “Hello.” “Hi. Hi.”
[Bloop]
Adam asks, WOULD YOU LIKE
TO JOIN US IN A NATURE WALK
I WILL BE LEADING?
A boy wearing a blue and green hat says, OKAY.
A boy wearing a blue, white and grey touque says, SOUNDS GOOD.
Adam asks, WHAT ARE YOUR NAMES?
The boy wearing a blue and green hat says, MARIO.
Adam asks, AND WHAT'S YOUR NAME?
The boy wearing a blue, white and grey touque says, DENNIS.
Adam tells Sigfried, I'LL WRITE MARIO,
YOU WRITE DENNIS.
Sigfried says, I GOT DENNIS, PERFECT.
Dennis says, THANK YOU.
Adam says, SEE YOU THERE.
Sigfried says, BYE.
Adam says, OH HEY.
THERE'S MY BROTHER ELIAS
AND HIS FRIEND EMERSON.
HEY, EMERSON.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN A
NATURE WALK I'LL BE LEADING?
Emerson says, YEAH, I LIKE
THE FOREST. I'LL GO ON A WALK.
Adam says, WE'LL BE IDENTIFYING TREES,
OBSERVING NATURE, AND HIKING.
Emerson says, THAT DOES SOUND FUN.
Adam says, OKAY, I'LL WRITE YOUR NAME.
Later, Adam sits at the dining room table.
He says, I THINK I AM A FOREST FRIEND
BECAUSE I'VE LEARNED A LOT
DURING THESE MISSIONS
AND I'M PROUD OF MYSELF.
Shakira, Sigfried, Eric, Kyle, and Lisa dance. Yellow and red text above them reads, “Green Beat.”
[Upbeat music plays]
Sigfried narrates, HUMANS HAVE
A LONG HISTORY OF LOOKING
AFTER FORESTS.
Text reads, “All You Can Eat Bufforest.”
Sigfried narrates, FOR THOUSANDS
OF YEARS WE GREW FOOD FORESTS.
OVER MANY GENERATIONS ANCIENT
INDIGENOUS PEOPLE SHAPED THE
FORESTS INTO AMAZING PLACES
THAT GREW NUTS, FRUITS
AND VEGETABLES.
EVERYWHERE YOU LOOKED
THERE WAS SOMETHING TO EAT.
THE TALLEST TREES GREW NUTS
AND LARGE FRUIT AND MEDIUM
TREES GREW SMALLER FRUIT.
BUSHES GREW BERRIES.
THERE WERE HERBS AND SPICES.
AND IN THE GROUND WERE THINGS
LIKE CARROTS AND POTATOES.
WHEN HUMANS WORK WITH NATURE,
WE CAN INCREASE THE BIODIVERSITY
OF THE FOREST.
A FEW OF THESE FOOD FORESTS
STILL EXIST AND PEOPLE ARE
GROWING NEW ONES. SO COOL.
OH, I'M SO FULL.
Sigfried, Kyle, Adam and Eric stand behind tall grass. Tex reads, “Green Squad.”
The electronic voice sings, GREEN SQUAD.
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle walks on the sidewalk towards the table. Text beside him reads, “Hey.” Text beside Adam and Sigfried reads, “Hey! Hey!”
[Upbeat music plays]
Kyle says, HEY, ADAM AND SIG.
SO, HOW DID THE NATURE WALK
SIGN UPS GO?
Adam says, IT WAS AWESOME AND
WE GOT FIVE PEOPLE TO SIGN UP.
Kyle says, WOW.
IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE TRULY
BECOME A FRIEND OF THE FOREST.
Sigfried says, AND NOW HE CAN
HELP HIS NEW FRIENDS
BECOME FRIENDS WITH THE
FOREST AS WELL.
Adam says, THANK YOU SQUAD FOR
TEACHING ME HOW TO HELP THE FOREST.
Sigfried says, ANYTIME.
Kyle says, HIGH FIVES ALL AROUND.
They all high five.
[Hands slap]
Adam cheers, YAY!
The Green Squad makes a human pyramid with Sigfried, Eric and Kyle on the bottom row and Lisa and Skakira on the top.
Text reads, “Squad Tip.”
[Lively music plays]
Eric stands behind a table. A photograph of white hydrangeas appears to his right. A bunch of bananas and a small white plate with a brown banana peel on it rest on the table in front of him.
He says, I REMEMBER MY MOTHER
WOULD GROW HUGE FLOWERS
OUT IN THE FRONT YARD WHEN
I WAS A KID, SPECIFICALLY,
WHITE HYDRANGEAS.
NEIGHBOURS, FAMILES AND FRIENDS
WOULD ALWAYS COME AND COMMENT
ON THEIR BEAUTY AND ENORMOUS SIZE.
FINALLY MY MOM TOLD ME HER SECRET.
BANANA PEELS.
Eric imitates a monkey, HOO HOO HAHA.
HOO HOO HAHA.
He says, AFTER HAVING EATEN A BANANA
OR COOKING WITH IT JUST SIMPLY
PLACE THE BANANA PEEL AT
THE STEM OF YOUR PLANTS.
BANANAS ARE FULL OF POTASSIUM
WHICH IS A SUPER FOOD FOR PLANTS.
BECAUSE THEY BROWN QUICKLY LIKE
THIS ONE THEY CAMOUFLAGE WITH
THE SOIL SO YOU WON'T EVEN
KNOW THAT THEY'RE THERE.
MY MOTHER AND I STILL PLANT
BANANA PEELS IN OUR GARDEN
DURING THE SPRING,
SUMMER, FALL AND WINTER.
I EVEN TRIED IT OUT IN MY VEGGIE
GARDEN AND IT WORKS THERE TOO.
YOUR FLOWERS WON'T GET DAMAGED
BECAUSE CRITTERS LIKE SQUIRRELS
DON'T LIKE BANANA PEELS SO THEY
WON'T COME AND TURN UP THE SOIL.
SO, WHY DON'T YOU GIVE IT A TRY
AT HOME?
SAVE YOU BANANA PEELS AND YOUR
PLANTS WILL THANK YOU FOR IT.
The Green Squad poses. Text reads, “Check-In.”
Kyle, Shakira, Eric, Lisa and Sigfried sit around a small table with a tablet on it.
[Upbeat music plays]
Eric says, WE'RE READY TO
CHECK IN WITH ADAM.
[Claps hands]
Adam appears on the tablet screen.
Adam says, I'M EXCITED TO SHARE WHAT
I HAVE LEARNED WITH MY FRIENDS.
Adam and Elias stand in a parking lot. Mario, Dennis and an adult wave to them.
Children say, HI, ADAM.
Adam says, HI.
A boy asks, HOW ARE YOU DOING?
Adam says, GREAT.
ARE YOU GUYS EXCITED?
Mario and Dennis shout,
YEAH, SURE, SURE.
Adam says, LET'S GO DO THE WALK.
[Shakira giggles]
Adam narrates, THE SCAVENGER HUNT
AND THE TREE PLANTING REALLY HELPED
BECAUSE DURING THE TREE PLANTING
WE ACTUALLY LEARNED A LOT
ABOUT TREES.
Sigfried says, IT'S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
TO SEE ADAM SHOW US HOW, REALLY,
ANYBODY CAN GET INVOLVED IN
PLANTING TREES IN THEIR CITY
WHEREVER THEY ARE
AND ANYBODY CAN DO IT.
Shakira says, YEAH, AND THEN IT BECOMES
A PERSONAL THING BECAUSE IT'S YOUR
TREE AND YOU CAN GO BACK AND
VISIT IT AND WATCH THE TREE GROW
AS THE YEARS GO BY.
Eric says, ADAM, I DEFINITELY WANT
TO SEE PICTURES OF YOU AND THAT
TREE AS YOU BOTH GROW UP.
Adam uses a tablet to take a photograph of a leaf.
[Click, background shouting]
Adam narrates, FOR THE SCAVENGER HUNT
WE ALSO LEARNED A LOT.
Adam stands with his friends by trees.
Adam says, OKAY GUYS, SO WE'RE
GONNA GO ON A NATURE WALK.
WE'RE GONNA SEE TREES, RACCOONS,
FROGS, SQUIRRELS AND MORE.
AND WE'RE GONNA HAVE SOME FUN.
IS EVERYBODY READY?
Adam’s friends shout, YES, LET'S GO!
Adam says, WE STAY ON THE PATHS
BECAUSE WE MIGHT BE STEPPING
ON LITTLE BABY TREES AND WE DON'T
WANT THAT.
OH LOOK GUYS, THAT LOOKS LIKE A
SAPLING BUT WE LEAVE THEM ALONE
SO THAT'S WHY WE STAY ON THE PATH.
Eric says, HE'S GONNA BE LIKE SOME
FUTURE, LIKE, CANADA PARKS FOREST
TOUR GUIDE.
Sigfried says, HE WAS ON THE BALL WITH THAT.
Eric says, HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING.
HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT.
"STAY ON THE PATH."
Shakira says, HE SAID IT NICER THAN THAT.
Kyle says, WASN'T THAT SO COOL THOUGH?
I REMEMBER TELLING HIM, I WAS
LIKE - YOU NEED TO STAY ON THE
PATH, HERE'S HOW TO SPOT
SAPLINGS, NATIVE TREES.
THERE'S SO MANY THINGS THAT WE
ENDED UP TEACHING HIM THAT NOW
HE'S GOING OUT TO TEACH HIS
FRIENDS AND YOU KNOW THAT
THEY'RE GONNA TEACH THEIR
FRIENDS AND THEIR FRIENDS AND
SUDDENLY WE'VE GOT A WHOLE
COMMUNITY WHO KNOWS HOW
TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FORESTS.
Shakira says, HE'S SUCH A GOOD LEADER TOO.
Sigfried says, YEAH.
ADAM WAS REALLY RECEPTIVE TO
WHAT WE HAD TO SAY, I THINK, TO
ALL OF US AND THAT WAS AMAZING.
Adam says, OH LOOK AT THAT BABY TREE.
THERE'S A RIVER RIGHT THERE.
I THINK IT' GOING GREAT.
SO TO CONTINUE TO HELP THE
FOREST AND BE A FOREST FRIEND,
I WOULD REALLY REALLY LIKE TO DO
SOME MORE WALKS BECAUSE I WANT
TO BECOME A BIGGER FRIEND OF
THE FOREST AND I ALSO WANT MY
FRIENDS TO BECOME FRIENDS OF
THE FOREST TOO.
BUT I THINK THAT ALSO MAKE
THEM CARE MORE ABOUT NATURE.
DID YOU GUYS HAVE FUN?
Adam’s friends say, YEAH!
One of his friends says, I GOT SOME
FRESH AIR TOO.
Adam says, THANKS FOR COMING.
I REALLY THINK THE
SQUAD WOULD BE PROUD OF ME.
Kyle says, I AM DEFINITELY PROUD.
Shakira says, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE
WHAT HE'S GONNA DO IN THE
FUTURE TOO.
Lisa says, WITH MORE FRIENDS.
Shakira says, MAYBE WITH THE
SCHOOL NEXT TIME HE CAN DO IT.
Eric says, I LOVE HOW HE DANCES.
HE DID THE ADAM TREE DANCE
AND HE WAS DANCING ON THE WALK.
I MEAN, THIS GUY IS FULL OF
BEANS AND FULL OF ENERGY.
ADAM YOU'RE A TRUE
FRIEND OF THE FOREST.
Kyle says, I'D SAY HE'S A B.F.F.
BEST FOREST FRIEND.
The Green Squad cheers, GO ADAM!
End credits roll.
[Upbeat music plays]
A child says, WHEE!
Colourful text reads, “tvo kids.”
[Child giggles]
A blue eye peers out of the Apartment Eleven Productions logo. Text beneath it reads, “Apartment Eleven Productions.”
[Squeaking]
