[Bright music plays]

A person says, WHEE!

Text reads, tvokids + Apartment 11 Productions Original.

[Giggling]

[Cheerful music plays]

Shakira, Eric and Kyle sit on a bench outside wearing winter coats.

Shakira says, WELL, IT'S THAT
TIME, SUMMER IS OVER.

Eric says, HARVESTING IS OVER AND MY PLANTS
ARE GOING TO SLEEP FOR THE
WINTER.

Kyle says, AUTUMN IS OVER AND THE
SNOW WILL BE FALLING SOON.

Shakira looks thoughtful.

She says, BUT DOES THAT MEAN THAT
BEING GREEN IS O-V-E-R.
OVER?!

She, Eric and Kyle say, NO WAY!

Eric says, WE'RE TAKING OUR CUES FROM A
TEN-YEAR-OLD ENVIRONMENTALIST.

Kyle says, WHEN THE TEMPERATURES
DROP HIS CONCERN FOR
THE PLANET DOESN'T
STOP.

Shakira says, ON WINTER WHITE DAYS HE
STILL WANTS TO BE GREEN.

She, Eric and Kyle shiver.

They say, BRRRRR!

Kyle says, SNUGGLES UP GUYS.

[Upbeat music plays]

In the opening credits, the five Green Squad friends pose. They each open bags that carry different emojis.

Eric has long, black hair, and carries gardening emojis. Lisa has long, tightly braided black hair and carries food and cooking themed emojis. Blond haired Sigfried carries activism themed emojis. Shakira has long, black hair and carries craft themed emojis. Kyle, who has short black hair, has different modes of transportation emojis.

The Green Squad friends dance and pose as text appears that reads, TVO Kids Presents.

A person reading the title says, GREEN SQUAD.

A boy with short black hair wearing a red sweater sits against a large pillow on a bench.

He says, MY NAME IS KASMAN
AND I'M 10 YEARS OLD.

A family walks down a sidewalk.

Kasman says, I LIVE WITH MY MOM, DAD, MY
YOUNGER BROTHER AND MY YOUNGER
SISTER.
I DEFINITELY REALLY LIKE
COMEDY, LIKE JOKES, PRANKS.
I LIKE SPORTS.

He plays ball hockey with his brother.

Kasman says, I USED TO DRAW A LOT.
I DIDN'T WANT TO WASTE THE PAPER
SO I WOULD LIKE, INSTEAD OF
USING MARKERS AND DRAWING ON
ONE SIDE I WOULD USE MY PENCIL
CRAYONS AND DRAW ON BOTH SIDES.

Drawings hang on a wall.

Kasman says, FOR HALLOWEEN I
ALWAYS MAKE A BOX COSTUME.
I JUST USE THE SAME BOX EVERY
YEAR THAT I JUST PAINT OVER.
MAYBE TAKE A FEW THINGS OFF AND
I JUST RECYCLE IT AND THEN USE
IT AGAIN.

Pictures show his box costumes which include monster and a train.

Kasman says, I DEFINITELY GET CONFUSED WHEN
LIKE - WAIT, IS THIS GARBAGE OR
IS IT RECYCLING OR?

An animation shows a person holding a plastic bottle over a garbage can and a recycling can.

Kasman says, LIKE, I GET CONFUSED
ALMOST ALL THE TIME.

A picture shows him outside with a popsicle.

Kasman says, I SPEND A LOT OF MY
TIME IN MY BACKYARD.
WE TRIED TO MAKE A GARDEN BUT IT
DIDN'T EXACTLY WORK OUT THE WAY
WE PLANNED.
I WOULD LIKE TO
TRY GARDENING AGAIN.
SO, IN MY HOUSE I'M ALWAYS THE
ONE WHO'S LIKE, I'M KINDA ALWAYS
HOT AND I ALWAYS WANT IT COLDER.
MY MOM'S ALWAYS COLD AND SHE
JUST WANTS IT WARMER AND WE
STILL GET A LONG
OVER THE THERMOSTAT THAT MUCH.
THAT'S ACTUALLY A LOT OF
ENERGY GETTING WASTED.
IT'S JUST BAD FOR
THE ENVIRONMENT.

He rakes leaves.

Kasman continues, I REALLY THINK IT'S IMPORTANT
TO CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT.
A KID CAN DEFINITELY
MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO
BE GREEN IN THE WINTER BUT...
HEY SQUAD, I COULD REALLY USE
YOUR HELP!

Outside, he throws leaves in the air. On the sidewalk, Shakira shivers between Eric and Kyle.

She says, BRRR!
EVEN THOUGH IT'S COLD OUTSIDE MY
HEART IS WARM THINKING ABOUT HOW
MUCH KASMAN CARES
ABOUT THE PLANET.

Kyle says, HE'S ALREADY RECYCLING AND
I LIKE HOW HE WANTS TO KEEP
EVERYONE IN HIS HOUSE
WARM WITHOUT WASTING ENERGY.

Eric says, I'VE GOT SOME FUN
IDEAS TO KEEP KASMAN
GREEN ALL YEAR ROUND.

Shakira says, COME ON.
LET'S GO MEET THIS SUPER KID AND
HELP HIM KEEP HIS HOUSE WINTER
READY BOTH INSIDE AND OUT.

The three Green Squad members cheer, YEAH!

They walk up to Kasman’s house.

Shakira says, SO EXCITED!

Kyle says, WOO!

Eric rings the doorbell.

[Doorbell ringing]

Kasman answers the door.

The Green Squad members say, HI!

Kasman waves and says, HI, I'M KASMAN.

Eric says, I'M ERIC.

Shakira says, I'M SHAKIRA.

Kyle says, I'M KYLE, NICE TO MEET YOU.

Inside, Kasman’s family members smile.

Kasman says, THIS IS MY SISTER, MY
DAD, MY MOM AND MY BROTHER.

Kasman’s dad holds his little sister Emjay. His brother Ayan stands beside his mom.

Shakira says, HI, NICE TO
MEET YOU ALL.

Kyle says, HEY!

Eric says, NICE TO MEET YOU.

Shakira says, THANK YOU FOR
HAVING US.

Kyle asks, DO YOU LIKE THIS TIME OF YEAR?

Kasman says, YEAH, I DO.

Shakira says, WHAT ARE SOME THINGS
YOU NOTICE WHEN THE
WEATHER GETS COLDER?

Kasman says, SO, MY MOM TURNS UP THE HEAT AND
I GO OUTSIDE AND I USUALLY JUST
PLAY IN THE SNOW AND ALSO
I PLAY A LOT MORE HOCKEY.

Shakira says, OH, HOCKEY'S REALLY FUN.

Kyle says, SO TRUE BUT IT ALSO MEANS
DAYLIGHT GOES AWAY SOONER.

Eric says, YEAH, SO WE HAVE
TO GET BUSY.
LET'S GET STARTED.

[Funky music plays]

Shakira, Kyle, Eric and Kasman ride down a slide on a park playset.

A person says, GREEN SQUAD.

In the kitchen, Kyle and Kasman lean against an island.

Kyle says, SO, FIRST UP KASMAN, WAY TO
GO ON TRYING TO GET YOUR HOUSE
WINTER READY WHILE ALSO
THINKING ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT.
HEARD YOU'VE BEEN DOING GREAT AT
REUSING CARDBOARDS AND PAPERS.
SO, I GOTTA KNOW.
ARE YOU STILL
RECYCLING DURING THE WINTER?

Kasman says, YES, WE ARE.

Kyle says, THAT'S GREAT AND THE
QUESTION IS - WHERE IS
YOUR RECYCLING BIN?

Kasman says, IN THE GARAGE.

He carries paper to recycling bins in the garage.

Kyle narrates, THAT'S PERFECT.
INDOORS IS IDEAL IN WINTER
WHEN IT COULD BE STORMY.
THINGS GET BLOWN OUT OF THE
BIN AND DON'T GET RECYCLED.

Kasman asks, WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WHO
DON'T HAVE A GARAGE?

Kyle says, WELL, THEN YOU GOTTA
FIND A RECYCLING BIN
WITH A REALLY GOOD
LID SO THAT EVERYTHING
STAYS INSIDE AND MAKE
SURE THAT IT
DOESN'T GET WET OR SNOWY,
WHICH IS PROBABLY THE
MOST IMPORTANT PART.
IF PAPER OR CARDBOARD
GET WET WE ACTUALLY
CAN'T RECYCLE IT
ANYMORE.

Kasman looks surprised.

Kyle asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK
HAPPENS THEN?

Kasman says, IT JUST GETS WASTED?

Kyle says, THAT'S TRUE.
IT JUST HAS TO GO IN THE
GARBAGE AND SOMETIMES
PEOPLE DON'T EVEN
KNOW THAT THEY'RE NOT
RECYCLING PROPERLY.
YOU HAVE TO KNOW ALL
YOUR LOCAL RULES AND ALSO
SOME OTHER RULES
BASED ON COMBINED
PRODUCTS.
SO, IT'S IMPORTANT THAT
YOU KNOW YOUR GARBAGE.

Kasman says, YEAH BUT I COULD PROBABLY USE
SOME HELP WITH MY RECYCLING
KNOWLEDGE.

Kyle says, THEN LET'S PLAY A GAME
CALLED "RACE THE WASTE".

Eric joins Kasman and Kyle.

He says, HEY, DID SOMEONE
SAY GAME?
I LOVE GAMES!

Kyle says, GAME ON!

He, Eric and Kasman cheer, YEAH!

In the garage, Kyle says, WELCOME TO KASMAN'S GARAGE,
WHERE WE'RE PLAYING AN ACTION
PACKED GAME
CALLED: RACE THE WASTE!
TODAY, WE HAVE ALL THESE LOVELY
ITEMS ON THIS TABLE AND KASMAN
WILL BE DETERMINING WHETHER THEY
ARE TRASH, RECYCLING, COMPOST OR
OTHER.

The four bins for the items are in the centre of the garage.

Eric says, YOU HAVE TWO MINUTES
TO COMPLETE THIS TASK.
ARE YOU READY?

Kasman says, YES!

Eric says, 3, 2, 1 AND GO!

He tracks time on a watch. Kyle grabs an item off the table.

He says, ITEM NUMBER 1 - THIS
LOVELY YOGURT CONTAINER.

Kasman takes the container and says, TRASH?

He throws it in the trash bin. A red X appears.

[Buzzer]

Kyle says, THIS WATER BOTTLE.

Kasman says, RECYCLE.
DEFINITELY.

He throws a water bottle in the recycling bin. A green check mark appears.

[Ding]

Kyle says, WEIRD PLASTIC CONTAINER?

Kasman says, WHAT IS THIS THING?

Eric says, YOU GOT THIS KASMAN, YOU GOT
THIS, KEEP GOING, KEEP GOING.

Kasman throws a bottle shaped container in the recycling bin. The check mark appears.

[Ding]

Kyle says, MILK JUG.

Kasman says, UM, PROBABLY
RECYCLE.

He throws a milk jug in the recycling bin and the check mark appears.

[Ding]

Eric and Kyle sit against the garage wall while Kasman continues sorting the items. Eric eats an apple. Kyle eats a banana.

Kyle says, TOILET PAPER?

Kasman says, TRASH.

The X appears.

[Buzzer]

Kyle says, JUICE BOX?

Kasman says, UM, RECYCLE.

He throws a juice box in the recycling bin. Text reads, Remove straw first!.

Kyle says, RECYCLABLE.

Eric announces, ONE MINUTE LEFT!

Kasman looks inside a pizza box.

He asks, IS THAT A STAIN?
TRASH.

He throws the box in the trash bin. The X appears.

[Buzzer]

Eric says, HURRY, HURRY, HURRY!
ONE MINUTE LEFT!

Kyle says, GROSS BANANAS?
UGH!

Kasman says, COMPOST!

He throws a moldy banana in the compost bin. The check mark appears.

[Ding]

Kyle sings, RED SOLO CUP.

Kasman says, OH, RECYCLE.

Eric says, 30 SECONDS WITH 5 ITEMS
LEFT.
YOU GOTTA DO THIS.
LET'S GO, LET'S GO, LET'S GO,
KASMAN.

Kasman throws a red solo cup in the recycling bin. The check mark appears.

[Ding]

Kyle says, QUICK, QUICK, QUICK.

Eric says, LET'S GO, LET'S GO.

Kasman throws a paper take out container in the trash bin.

Kasman says, TRASH.

The X appears.

[Buzzer]

Kyle says, WET NEWSPAPER!

He hands Kasman a wet newspaper.

Kasman says, EW!

He throws it in the trash and the X appears.

[Buzzer]

Eric says, 20 SECONDS.

Kasman says, IT'S ACTUALLY…

Eric says, 15.

Kyle gives Kasman pieces of cardboard.

Kasman says, UGH, THIS
IS WET!

He throws the cardboard in the trash and the X appears.

[Buzzer]

Kyle says, LAST ITEM!

He gives the last item Kasman, who jumps, and dunks it in the trash bin like a basketball. The check mark appears.

Kyle and Eric say, OH!

Kasman says, FINALLY.
I DON'T KNOW WHY I
WANTED TO DO THAT SO BADLY.

Kyle says, TIME FOR THE RESULTS!

He kneels beside the bins with Kasman and Eric.

Kyle says, SO, GREAT JOB ON
RACING THEW WASTE KASMAN.
LET'S SEE EXACTLY HOW YOU DID.

Eric takes the pizza box out of the trash bin.

Kyle says, THIS LOVELY PIZZA BOX.

Eric opens the box.

Kyle says, AS WE CAN SEE, THE GREASE
ONLY GOES ON THE BOTTOM SO THIS
BOTTOM HALF IS NOT RECYCLABLE
BECAUSE IT'S DIRTY BUT THIS TOP
HALF - IF YOU RIP IT OFF - COULD
TOTALLY GO IN THE RECYCLING AND
HAVE A NEW LIFE.

Kasman says, BUT IF IT'S OILY LIKE THAT WE
CAN'T RECYCLE IT BUT IF IT'S
CLEAN WE CAN?

Kyle says, EXACTLY AND IN FACT - THAT
GREASY BOTTOM HALF CAN GO IN THE
COMPOST.

Eric takes another item out of the trash bin.

Kyle says, UP NEXT, WE HAVE A CONTAINER JUST
FULL OF EXTRA FOOD IN THERE.
THESE ARE DEFINITELY SOMETHING
YOU WANT WASH OUT BEFORE YOU PUT
IT IN THE RECYCLING BUT AS IS,
THIS HAS TO GO IN THE TRASH.

Text reads, Food can ruin other recyclables.

Kasman says, SO, IF WE CLEAN THE CONTAINERS,
THAT CAN BE RECYCLED.
THEY HAVE A BETTER
CHANCE OF GETTING RECYCLED.

Kyle says, PERFECT.

Eric says, ABSOLUTELY.

He holds a black take-out container with a clear lid.

Kyle says, WE ALSO HAVE THIS PLASTIC
CONTAINER AND IT'S ACTUALLY A
YES, AND A NO FOR RECYCLING.

Eric takes the lid off the container.

Kyle says, THIS TOP PART OF THE CONTAINER
IS TOTALLY RECYCLABLE BUT THIS
BOTTOM PART IS ACTUALLY NOT
RECYCLABLE AND IT'S FOR ONE OF
THE WEIRDEST REASONS.

Kasman says, BECAUSE OF THE COLOUR?

Kyle says, THAT'S EXACTLY IT.
THESE BLACK TAKE OUT CONTAINERS
BLEND IN WITH THE RECYCLING
TRACKS AND THE MACHINES DON'T
PICK THEM UP, WHICH MEANS, THEY
GET THROWN
DIRECTLY IN THE TRASH.

Text reads, Some new facilities CAN accept these. Check in your area!

Kasman says, SO, I CAN USE THESE FOR LIKE
MY PENCILS AND MY PENS AND MY
CRAYONS.

Eric says, ABSOLUTELY.

Kyle says, ABSOLUTELY.
ALWAYS REUSE FIRST
BEFORE YOU RECYCLE.

Eric says, KASMAN, I NOTICED YOU HAD WET
NEWSPAPER IN THE TRASH WHICH IS
GOOD ON YOU BECAUSE IT DOES NOT
BELONG IN THE RECYCLING BECAUSE
IT'S WET.

Kyle nods.

Eric continues, I ALSO NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE A
MUNICIPAL COMPOSTER HERE WHICH
IS WHERE THIS BELONGS BUT EVEN
BETTER IS THAT THIS CAN GO INTO
YOUR BACKYARD COMPOSTER.
DO YOU HAVE ONE?

Kasman says, NO BUT MY MOM WANTS TO GET ONE.

Eric says, PERFECT.

Kyle says, FIELD TRIP!
COMPOSTING MISSION.

Eric says, LET'S GO.

Trash is piled in large heap.

Kyle narrates, TO HELP KASMAN STAY GREEN DURING
THE WINTER - WE VISITED A WASTE
MANAGEMENT FACILITY.
THERE WERE LOTS OF MACHINES AND
GADGETS TO PROCESS OUR GARBAGE,
RECYCLING AND FOOD SCRAPS.

At the facility, Kyle says, WOW.

He narrates, WE MET UP WITH
DANIELLE, WHO SHOWED US AROUND.

Danielle has long, wavy brown hair and wears a grey sweater.

Kyle asks, WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT DO YOU DO?

Danielle says, I AM A WASTE
OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN
AND MY JOB IS TO
TEACH OUR COMMUNITY
AND OUR STUDENTS ABOUT
WASTE MANAGEMENT
HERE WHERE WE LIVE.

Kasman says, THIS PLACE IS COOL.

Kyle says, WHAT WE REALLY WANT TO KNOW IS
ALL ABOUT BACKYARD COMPOSTING.
KASMAN HERE, HAS BEEN
TALKING ALL ABOUT IT.

Kasman asks, HOW DOES THE BACKYARD
COMPOSTER ACTUAL MAKE COMPOST?

Danielle says, THAT IS A VERY
GREAT QUESTION.
SO, INSIDE THAT COMPOSTER
IS LIKE A WHOLE COMMUNITY.
SO, WHEN YOU'RE ADDING YOUR FOOD
SCRAPS AND SOME BROWN MATERIALS,
LIKE YOUR LEAVES, THERE'S BUGS
AND BACTERIA AND ORGANISMS IN
THERE BREAKING DOWN
ALL OF THAT MATERIAL.
THEY'RE EATING IT AND THEY'RE
MOVING AROUND AND AS IT BREAKS
DOWN THEY'RE PRODUCING SOMETHING
THAT LOOKS LIKE SOIL AND THAT IS
WHAT THE COMPOST IS THAT WE CAN
THEN USE ON OUR GARDENS AND IN
OUR LAWNS.

Kyle says, WE CAN COMPOST REALLY EASILY
IN THE SUMMER BUT HOW DOES IT
DIFFER IN THE WINTER?

Danielle says, SO, IT SLOWS DOWN IN THE WINTER
BUT WE CAN CONTINUE TO ADD TO IT
TO HAVE LOTS OF STUFF READY
FOR THE SPRING WHEN EVERYTHING
STARTS TO WARM UP A BIT.

Kyle says, SO, IT'S TOTALLY STILL WORTH IT
TO KEEP BACKYARD COMPOSTING ALL
THROUGH THE YEAR?

Danielle says, ABSOLUTELY.

A large black, circular bin is in front of Eric, Kyle and Kasman.

Kyle says, SO, WE'VE GOT TO SET THIS UP
TODAY AND WE KINDA WANT TO KNOW
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT
HOW WE CAN PUT IT IN.

Danielle says, THE BIN ITSELF –
PRETTY EASY TO INSTALL.
IT ACTUALLY JUST
COMES APART.
WE'RE GONNA
FLIP IT OVER.
WE'RE GONNA LINE UP ALL OF
THOSE PIECES TO CLIP THEM IN.

Eric helps Danielle put the bin together.

Danielle says, WE PUT THE DOOR ON
AND WE'RE READY TO GO.

She takes the lid off the bin.

Eric says, THERE YOU GO.

Danielle says, THERE YOU GO.
NOW GET OUT AND
START COMPOSTING!

Kasman says, OKAY.

He, Kyle and Eric each carry a piece of the composter bin.

[Funky music plays]

The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.

Kyle narrates, PAPER, GLASS, METAL,
PLASTIC.

A family plays rock, paper, scissors.

Kyle narrates, WHICH ONE WINS THE
RECYCLING CONTEST?
SOME MATERIALS CAN BE
RECYCLED MORE TIMES THAN OTHERS.
LIKE FOREVER AND EVER.
ONE OF THEM IS ALUMINUM.
IT CAN BE TURNED INTO BRAND
NEW OBJECTS COUNTLESS TIMES.

A picture of Kyle travels on a conveyer belt.

Kyle says, WEEEE!

He narrates, SAME GOES FOR GLASS.

Glass bottles move on a conveyer belt.

Kyle narrates, THOSE JARS OR BOTTLES CAN BE
TURNED INTO NEW ONES OVER AND
OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
EVEN IF THEY BREAK.

[Glass breaking]

Kyle narrates, WOAH, CAREFUL!

A conveyer belt carries paper.

Kyle narrates, PAPER CAN BE TRANSFORMED UP
TO 7 TIMES BUT EVEN RECYCLABLE
PLASTIC CAN ONLY BE
RECYCLED UP TO 3 TIMES.
HOORAY FOR OUR
GOLD MEDAL WINNERS.
GLASS AND METAL!
USING THOSE FIRST WILL MAKE A
BIGGER IMPACT ON REDUCING OUR
GARBAGE.

[Funky music plays]

Kasman and the three Green Squad members climb to the top of a climbing frame.

A person says, GREEN SQUAD.

In Kasman’s backyard, Eric and Kyle help Kasman put together his composter.

Eric narrates, KASMAN WANTS TO GET HIS
BACKYARD WINTER READY.
SETTING UP THE COMPOSTER IS
QUICK AND EASY AND WE PLACE IT
NOT FAR FROM THE BACKDOOR SO
ADDING KITCHEN SCRAPS WON'T BE
TOO HARD IN THE COLD WEATHER.

Kasman puts the lid on the bin.

Eric narrates, STEP ONE OF GOING
WINTER GREEN IS COMPLETE.
STEP 2: THE FALLEN LEAVES.

He, Kyle and Kasman throw leaves.

[Celebratory horn]

Kasman says, I'VE BEEN DOING A LOT
OF RAKING THIS FALL.

In his front yard, he rakes leaves with Eric.

Kasman says, I DON'T REALLY LIKE
THOSE LEAF BLOWERS.
THEY MAKE SO MUCH NOISE.

[Leaf blower whirring]

Eric says, I KNOW RIGHT, NOT ONLY DO THEY
WAKE YOU UP EARLY IN THE MORNING
WITH NOISE POLLUTION BUT SOME
ESTIMATES SAY THAT GAS POWERED
LEAF BLOWERS WITH THE OLD
ENGINES POLLUTE MORE THAN 100
CARS.
THAT'S WHY IT'S BETTER FOR US TO
PUT A LITTLE BIT OF ELBOW GREASE
WITH THESE RAKES.

Kasman says, SO, WE'RE JUST
MAKING ONE BIG PILE?

Eric says, ONE BIG PILE AND THEN
WE'LL USE THESE LEAVES AFTER.

He puts a handful of leaves in the composter.

He narrates, SOME OF THEM WILL BE USED
IN THE BACKYARD COMPOSTER.
IT MAKES GREAT BROWN WASTE WHICH
HELPS BREAK EVERYTHING DOWN AND
ALSO KEEPS CRITTERS AWAY.

A prohibition sign appears over an animated racoon. Eric and Kasman grab handfuls of leaves.

Eric says, NOT ONLY ARE LEAVES
GREAT TO PUT IN YOUR
COMPOST BUT THEY'RE
REALLY GOOD TO USE AS MULCH
AROUND THE BASE OF YOUR TREE
DURING THE WINTER.
YOU KINDA TUCK IT
IN JUST UP THERE.
IT'S GONNA PROTECT ALL THE NEW
SAPLINGS THAT ARE TRYING TO GROW
NEXT SPRING.

He and Kasman pack leaves around the trees in the front yard.

Eric says, I'M REALLY HAPPY TO
SEE THAT YOUR FAMILY
IS IN THE GARDEN GAME.
HOW DID THE
VEGGIES GO THIS YEAR?

Kasman says, IT DIDN'T REALLY GO OR
WORK OUT AS PLANNED.

Eric says, THAT'S OKAY.

Kasman says, BUT WE LOVE TO HAVE A GARDEN.

Eric says, GARDENING CAN BE A
TRIAL AND ERROR THING.
IT IS VERY CHALLENGING BUT I'VE
GOT A GREAT WAY TO GET STARTED.

Kasman says, I'M IN.

In the kitchen there are small, plastic pots of different herbs beside a stack of larger, unused pots.

Eric says, HERE WE HAVE THE PLANTS.
HERE WE HAVE SOME MINT, WHICH
CAN GO GREAT IN TEA OR LEMONADE,
ROSEMARY, PURPLE BASIL,
LEMON BALM AND MORE ROSEMARY.

Eric narrates, WE'LL GET THESE HERBS STARTED
INSIDE THE HOUSE SO THEY HAVE A
BETTER CHANCE OF
THRIVING OUTSIDE IN THE SPRING.

The herbs are planted in the larger pots.

Eric says, SO, I'VE GOT A FUN LITTLE WAY
TO PRESERVE THESE HERBS ONCE
THEY'VE GROWN TO A POINT WHERE
YOU CAN USE THEM AT ANY POINT
WHILE YOU'RE COOKING.
I WANT YOU TO GET SOME TRIMMINGS
FROM EACH ONE OF THESE PLANTS.
NOT TOO BIG, NOT TOO SMALL.

Kasman and Eric trim each of the herbs with a pair of scissors.

Eric says, SO, WITH THESE TRIMMINGS WE'RE
GONNA CREATE SOMETHING CALLED
HERB BOMBS.

He dices one of the herbs.

He says, WE'RE GONNA CUT THESE UP INTO
LITTLE PIECES AND PUT THEM IN
THESE ICE CUBE TRAYS AND FILL
THEM UP WITH WATER OR OLIVE OIL
DEPENDING ON WHICH ONE AND THEN
YOU'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO FREEZE
THESE AND THEN TAKE THEM OUT
WHENEVER YOU'RE GONNA COOK.

Kasman and Eric freeze the diced herbs in an ice cube tray using oil and water.

Eric says, CHECK THESE OUT!

He puts ice cube trays of frozen herbs on the island.

He says, THESE REFRESHING ICE CUBES OF
WATER WITH THE MINT AND LEMON
BALM IN THEM YOU CAN USE
TO REFRESH YOUR DRINK.

Eric drops an ice cube of mint and lemon into a glass of water. He grabs another tray.

He says, THESE YOU'RE GONNA USE IN A
POT, IN A PAN, IN A SOUP.
OFTEN A LOT OF RECIPES START
WITH OLIVE OIL AND THIS IS THE
WAY TO DO IT.

Eric dumps the olive oil herb bombs onto a plate.

He narrates, THIS IS ALSO A GREAT THING TO DO
IF YOU HAVE HERBS LEFT IN YOUR
GARDEN BEFORE WINTER COMES
SO NOTHING GOES TO WASTE.

To Kasman he says, WHY DON'T YOU TRY
THIS GLASS OF WATER?

Kasman says, SURE.

Eric says, FULL OF LEMON BALM
AND MINT.

Kasman tries the water.

He says, THIS IS REALLY REFRESHING.

Eric says, OF COURSE IT IS!
IT'S NATURE
AT ITS FINEST.
DOESN'T THAT ELEVATE
YOUR DISH?

Kasman nods and says, MM-HMM.

Eric adds, AND NOW YOU'VE GOT UNLIMITED
ACCESS TO LEMON BALM, MINT AND
THESE OTHER HERBS IN YOUR
KITCHEN BUT IT IS KINDA GETTING
HOT IN HERE.
I THINK SHAKIRA'S WAITING
FOR YOU BY THE THERMOSTAT.

Kasman says, OKAY.

Eric tries the water as Kasman leaves.

He says, AH!

[Funky music plays]

The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.

Eric narrates, YOU KNOW WHAT'S
"UNBE-LEAF-ABLE"?
THE AMOUNT OF LAND USED TO GROW
LAWNS IN THE US IS THE SIZE OF
THE COUNTRY OF TUNISIA!
IN, AUTUMN, LOTS OF FALLING
LEAVES LAND ON THOSE LAWNS AND,
LIKE KASMAN'S FAMILY, MOST
PEOPLE LIKE TO CLEAN THEM AWAY.
THAT'S A LOST OF
LEAVES BEING REMOVED.

[Leaf blower whirring]

Eric narrates, OH NO!
A LEAF BLOWER!

A leaf blower blows away leaves.

Eric narrates, THOSE DEAD LEAVES ARE HOME TOO A
BUNCH OF REALLY COOL INSECTS AND
ANIMALS LIKE
BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS.
BUMBLEBEE QUEENS DIG LITTLE
HOLES IN THE GROUND TO STAY WARM
IN THE WINTER.
THEY'RE EXTRA PROTECTED WHEN
THOSE HOLES ARE COVERED BY
LEAVES.
GET OVER HERE YOU!

A picture of Eric follows the leaf blower.

Eric narrates, WHEN WE LEAVE THE LEAVES, WE
PROTECT INSECTS AND POLLINATORS
THAT ARE GOOD FOR
THE ENVIRONMENT.

An animated Queen Bee smiles.

[Bee buzzing]

Eric narrates, SO MAYBE WE SHOULD
JUST "LEAF" THEM ALONE!
THAT'S "MULCH" BETTER.

[Funky music plays]

Shakira and Kyle push Kasman and Eric on a swing set.

A person says, GREEN SQUAD.

In Kasman’s house, his mom walks up to the thermostat wrapped in a blanket.

Shakira narrates, KASMAN IS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO
KEEP EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE WARM
AND BE ENERGY EFFICIENT.

She chats with Kasman beside the thermostat.

Shakira says, SO, I HEAR THERE'S A
DEBATE ABOUT TEMPERATURE
IN YOUR HOUSE.
COULD YOU TELL ME A
LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT?

Kasman says, WELL, MY MOM'S ALWAYS COLD AND
I'M ALWAYS HOT AND SHE CRANKS
THE HEAT UP A LOT, EVEN IN THE
NIGHTTIME AND I JUST FEEL LIKE
THAT'S SUCH A WASTE OF ENERGY.

Shakira says, YOU'RE RIGHT BUT WE CAN'T KEEP
YOUR MOM COLD IN THE WINTER.
SO, I HAVE SOME
GREAT IDEAS ON HOW WE CAN
CONSERVE ENERGY STILL,
BUT ALSO KEEP EVERYBODY
COMFORTABLE AND COZY IN THE
HOUSE.

She points to the thermostat.

She explains, THIS IS CALLED A PROGRAMMABLE
THERMOSTAT BECAUSE WE CAN
ACTUALLY CHANGE THE PROGRAM SO
THAT IT'S COLDER WHEN YOU'RE AT
SCHOOL OR AWAY FROM HOME AND
WHEN YOU'RE SLEEPING AND IT'S
WARMER WHEN YOU'RE AT
HOME DURING THE DAY.
THIS WILL HELP
SAVE A LOT OF ENERGY.

Kasman taps the thermostat.

Shakira says, PERFECT.

She and Kasman stand by a window with closed curtains.

She says, ALSO KEEP YOUR CURTAINS
CLOSED, AND ON SUNNY DAYS
OPEN THEM UP
TO LET THE SUN IN AND
HEAT UP YOUR HOUSE.

Shakira and Kasman open the curtains.

They say, TADA!

An animated sun smiles.

Kasman says, BUT MY MOM SAYS THAT THERE ARE
SOME PLACES IN THE HOUSE THAT
ARE COLDER THAN OTHERS.

Shakira says, LET'S FIND THEM.

She carries a burning incense stick.

She says, SO, I HAVE THIS INCENSE STICK.
A LOT OF HOMES HAVE
AREAS THAT ARE DRAFTY.
SO, LIKE DOORS AND WINDOWS,
THERE ARE USUALLY CRACKS THAT
LET THE COLD AIR IN AND HEAT
ESCAPE.
IF THE SMOKE GOES THE OPPOSITE
WAY AND IN A CERTAIN AREA THEN
THAT MEANS THAT THERE'S AIR
AND THAT MEANS THERE'S A DRAFT.

Kasman holds the incense stick near a door.

She says, WE'RE LIKE DRAFT
SPIES SNEAKING IN.

Kasman says, YEAH.

He holds the incense closer to the door.

He says, WAIT, IT'S KIND OF MOVING
ACTUALLY.

He crouches beside the door with Shakira.

Shakira says, LET'S SEE.

Kasman says, LET'S SEE.

He holds the incense beside the bottom of the door. The smoke moves in the opposite direction.

Shakira says, YEP.

Kasman says, YEAH.

Shakira says, DEFINITELY A DRAFT.

Kasman says, THERE'S A DRAFT.

Shakira says, OKAY.
NOW, LET'S MEASURE THE
LENGTH OF THE DOOR FRAME.

She measures the door frame’s length with a tape measure.

She says, OKAY. 32.

Text reads, 32 inches = 81cm.

Kasman asks, WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Shakira says, HMM.
WOULDN'T YOU
LIKE TO KNOW.

Kasman says, I WOULD LIKE TO
KNOW ACTUALLY.

Shakira says, YOU’LL SEE!

Kasman follows her through the house. They sit at a table with a sewing machine and pieces of fabric.

Shakira says, SO, THERE ARE MANY
OBJECTS YOU CAN GET
AT THE HARDWARE STORE
LIKE PLASTIC SHRINK
WRAP, WHICH CAN BLOCK
OUT THE DRAFT, BUT I
LIKE TO GET CRAFTY.

Kasman says, ME TOO.

Shakira says, GREAT BECAUSE WE'RE
GONNA MAKE DOOR SNAKES.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT
A DOOR SNAKE IS?

Kasman says, NO, BUT I LIKE SNAKES.

[Shakira laughing]

Shakira says, DOOR SNAKES ARE A
SUSTAINABLE CRAFT THAT
KEEPS COLD AIR FROM
COMING IN AND KEEPS
THE HOT AIR INSIDE THE
ROOM TO KEEP IT WARM.

Kasman unfolds a pair of pants that are on the table.

Shakira narrates, TO MAKE THE DOOR SNAKES WE GOT
SOME LARGE OLD PANTS AND CUT
THEM INTO LONG PIECES THAT
ARE THE SAME SIZE AS THE DOOR
FRAMES.

She helps Kasman sew tubes out of fabric cut from the pants.

Shakira says, GREAT.
NOW THE FUN PART.
WE GET TO FILL THEM.

Kasman scoops sand out of a bowl and pours it into one of the tubes using a funnel.

Shakira narrates, WE FILL THE FABRIC TUBES
WITH TWO DIFFERENT MATERIALS.
SAND LIKE THE KIND YOU SEE AT A
PLAYGROUND AND LEFTOVER FABRIC
SCRAPS.

She and Kasman stuff fabric scrabs into fabric tubes.

She narrates, I WONDER WHICH STUFFING WILL
WORK BEST TO BLOCK THE DRAFTS.

Kasman asks, YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD MAKE
THEM LOOK MORE LIKE A SNAKE?

Shakira says, WHAT?

Kasman says, SOME GOOGLY EYES.

Shakira says, AH, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.

Kasman glues large googly eyes to his door snakes.

Shakira says, SO, DO YOU LIKE THEM?

Kasman says, YEAH, I THINK THEY'RE AMAZING.
THEY'LL DEFINITELY
STOP THE DRAFT.

He and Shakira move their door snakes like real snakes.

They say, SSSSSSS.

They bring their door snakes to the back door.

Shakira says, THESE ARE THE
SAND ONES.

She and Kasman lay their sand door snakes along the door.

Shakira says, OKAY.
NOW LET'S PLACE THESE
FABRIC ONES BY
THE FRONT DOOR.

She and Kasman lay their fabric door snakes along the front door.

Shakira says, OKAY, LAST TWO SNAKES.
I'VE GOT ONE WITH SAND AND
YOU'VE GOT ONE WITH FABRIC.

She and Kasman lay their last two door snakes by doors in the mud room.

Kasman says, I CAN LITERALLY FEEL
THE DRAFT FROM HERE.
AND JUST LIKE THAT,
THE DRAFT IS GONE.

He and Shakira high five.

Shakira says GOOD JOB.

[Funky music plays]

The Green Squad members dance. Text reads, Green Beat.

Shakira narrates, DOOR SNAKES ARE SO
COOL AND FUN TO MAKE.

An animated snake smiles.

Shakira says, CUTE! BUT I SAID DOOR SNAKES.

A door blocks the animated snake.

[Shakira laughing]

Shakira says, VERY FUNNY.
ANOTHER WAY TO SAVE
ENERGY IS CEILING FANS.
IN THE WINTER, THEY CAN KEEP US
WARM IF YOU REVERSE THEM TO SPIN
CLOCKWISE.
HOT AIR RISES SO, IN THE WINTER,
THE HOTTEST PLACE IN THE HOUSE
IS NEAR THE CEILING AND THE
COLDEST PART IS ON THE FLOOR.

In a picture, Shakira wears a winter coat.

She says, BRRRR.

Arrows in a house show how air moves with a ceiling fan.

Shakira narrates, THE CEILING FAN PUSHES THE WARM
AIR DOWN KEEPING YOU WARM AND
SAVING ENERGY AND THERE'S
ANOTHER REALLY COOL TRICK TO
KEEPING YOUR HOUSE WARM.
HAVE A PARTY!
8 PEOPLE GENERATE THE SAME
AMOUNT OF HEAT AS A 1 METER
ELECTRIC BASEBOARD HEATER.
SO, WHEN IT GETS REALLY COLD
- INVITE YOUR FRIENDS OVER!

Multiple animated snakes gather.

Shakira narrates, UH, HUMAN FRIENDS.
SORRY GUYS.

The animated snakes frown.

[Party horn]

[Funky music plays]

Kasman and the three Green Squad members play on a basketball court.

A person says, GREEN SQUAD.

At the front door, Shakira, Kyle and Eric wear their coats.

Shakira says, WELL, WE HAD SO
MUCH FUN HANGING OUT
WITH YOU TODAY.

Eric says, IT'S BEEN AN
AWESOME BLAST.

Kyle says, WE HOPE YOU KEEP UP ALL
YOUR WINTER COMPOSTING.

Eric says, YES AND YOUR YARD IS
READY FOR THE WINTER AND
YOU'VE GOT A
GREAT START FOR
YOUR GARDEN.

Shakira says, ALSO, I'M REALLY EXCITED TO SEE
HOW YOU KEEP UP WITH YOUR
TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND HOW THE
DOOR SNAKES WORK OUT.

Eric says, I HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE
IN YOU THAT YOU'RE GONNA
DO A GREAT JOB.
YOU KNOW WHY?

Kasman asks, WHY?

Eric says, KAS YOU THE MAN!

Shakira awkwardly says, YEP!

Kyle says, YOU'VE BEEN WAITING ALL
DAY TO SAY THAT HAVEN'T YOU?

Eric says, MAYBE.

[Laughing]

Eric says, COME IN HERE!
COME ON.

Shakira says, GROUP HUG!

Kasman and the Green Squad members share a hug.

[Upbeat music plays]

The Green Squad make a human pyramid. Text reads, Squad Tip. Shakira stands behind a table with milk bags and bottle caps.

She says, YOU SEE THESE MILK BAGS
AND THESE BOTTLE CAPS?
THEY TEND TO BE THROWN INTO THE
THE GARBAGE AND HARDLY EVER END
UP GETTING RECYCLED BUT WHAT IF
I TOLD YOU THAT THERE'S A WAY WE
CAN TURN THEM INTO
SOMETHING FANTASTIC?
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER MY AUNT TOLD
ME TO HOLD ONTO THESE LITTLE
BOTTLE CAPS.
SHE TOLD ME ABOUT ORGANIZATIONS
THAT COLLECTED THESE TEENY TINY
PIECES OF PLASTIC AND SOLD THEM
IN ORDER TO RAISE MONEY TO BUY
WHEELCHAIRS.

Shakira holds one of the plastic bottle caps.

She says, THESE LITTLE CAPS ARE MADE FROM
SOMETHING CALLED HIGH IMPACT
POLYSTYRENE, WHICH, IS A BIG
WORD FOR A TYPE OF PLASTIC, AND
THEY CAN BE RECYCLED!
YOU JUST NEED A LOT OF THEM.
SO, ORGANIZATIONS COLLECT THEM,
SELL THEM TO RECYCLING COMPANIES
AND THEN USE THAT
MONEY TO BUY WHEELCHAIRS.
PRETTY COOL, HUH?
SO, WHAT ABOUT MILK BAGS?

Shakira holds up a plastic milk bag.

She says, IN MOST PLACES YOU CAN'T RECYCLE
MILK BAGS BUT WHEN I JOINED MY
SCHOOL'S ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB I
FOUND OUT THAT MILK BAGS CAN BE
TURNED INTO SOMETHING VERY
USEFUL - BLANKETS FOR PEOPLE
WITHOUT A HOME.
WE CUT THE BAGS INTO STRIPS
LIKE THIS AND THEN WEAVE THEM
TOGETHER TO MAKE CUSHIONY
BLANKETS FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT A
HOME.

Shakira demonstrates how wide strips of a bilk bag are weaved together using a crochet hook.

She says, YOU CAN DO THIS TOO OR YOU
CAN SEND YOUR MILK BAGS TO
ORGANIZATIONS WHO
WILL WEAVE THEM FOR YOU.
THESE ARE JUST A COUPLE OF WAYS
YOU CAN RECYCLE SOMETHING WHILST
ALSO SUPPORTING A CAUSE
THAT YOU'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT.

[Upbeat music plays]

The Green Squad pose together. Text reads, Check-In. The Squad sits together in front of a tablet.

Eric says, LET'S CHECK IN ON
THE MAN - KASMAN!

In a video, Kasman says, HI SQUAD!
FROM WHAT I'VE LEARNED WITH THE
SQUAD DEFINITELY CHANGED A LOT
OF MY RECYCLING HABITS.
I ACTUALLY DIDN'T KNOW
YOU CAN REUSE THOSE.

He collects pencil crayons in a black take-out container.

He says, I THOUGHT JUST
LIKE RECYCLE THEM.
SO, THAT'S WHEN KYLE TAUGHT ME
THAT THOSE CAN'T BE RECYCLED
BECAUSE IT BLENDS IN
WITH THE CONVEYOR.

Eric says, I LIKE TO SEE IT WASN'T JUST
USED FOR FOOD, THE TUPPERWARE,
RIGHT?
IT WAS USED FOR DIFFERENT
APPLICATIONS AND THAT HE'S
INTEGRATING ALL THESE TECHNIQUES
INTO HIS FAMILY AND HIS HOME.

Kasman says, OKAY, SO AFTER WHAT WE LEARNED
ABOUT RECYCLING WITH ERIC AND
KYLE IN THE GARAGE.
MY FAMILY ACTUALLY DECIDED TO
LABEL OUR GARBAGE SO YOU KNOW
WHAT GOES WHERE.
SO, THIS IS GARBAGE.

Kasman shows different labeled bins in a kitchen cupboard.

Eric says, IT'S A GREAT INITIATIVE.

Kasman grabs a bowl on the counter.

He says, AND THIS IS FOOD SCRAPS THAT
GO IN OUR BACKYARD COMPOSTER.

Outside, he dumps scraps from the bowl into the composter.

He says, IT'S NOT HARD TO COMPOST.
ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS LAYER IT
LIKE - LEAVES, FOOD SCRAPS,
LEAVES, FOOD SCRAPS, AND YEAH.
IT'S NOT THAT HARD.

Kasman puts the lid back on the composter. Kyle and Eric fist bump.

Kasman says, I DEFINITELY ENJOYED THE RACE
THE WASTE GAME EVEN THOUGH I GOT
LIKE HALF THE QUESTIONS
WRONG AND I HAD TO TOUCH A MOLDY
BANANA.

[Green Squad laughing]

Shakira says, I REALLY LIKE THE PART WHERE HE
SAID THE QUESTIONS WERE REALLY
HARD.
HE GOT HALF OF THEM
WRONG IN THE GAME.

Kyle and Eric nod.

Eric says, MM-HMM.

Shakira says, I FEEL LIKE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS HE
LEARNED FROM THEM AND HE HAD
FUN.

Kyle says, I'M 1,000 PERCENT SURE THAT IF WE
ACTUALLY TOOK THE TEST NOW AND
PLAYED THAT GAME THAT HE
WOULD GET 100 PERCENT RIGHT.
WE SAW IT.
THE BLACK TAKEOUT
CONTAINERS FOR INSTANCE.
HE'S REALLY LEARNED A LOT AND
HE'S APPLYING IT SO WELL.

In the video, Kasman points to his herbs in the kitchen.

He says, THE HERB PLANTS ARE
DOING PRETTY GOOD.
THEY LOOK NICE.
THEY'RE GROWING.
I LOOK FORWARD TO
PLANTING THEM IN THE SPRING.
I'VE NEVER ACTUALLY HAD A
GARDEN THAT'S WORKED OUT BEFORE.

Eric says, KEEP IT CONFIDENT, KEEP ON
TRYING AND YEAH - YOU'RE GONNA
DO AWESOME.

In the kitchen, Kasman grabs an herb bomb from an ice cube tray while his mom cooks on the stove.

Kasman says, I GOT THE BOMB.

His mom says, OKAY, PUT IT IN.

Kasman puts the frozen herbs in a pan of mushrooms.

He says, THE HERB BOMBS WERE
REALLY GOOD.

Lisa says, THOSE HERB BOMBS ARE SO COOL
AND THEY MAKE COOKING EASIER AND
ALSO REDUCE FOOD
WASTE SO THAT'S REALLY AWESOME.

Shakira nods. In the video, Kasman checks on one of his door snakes.

He says, THAT WORKED.

Sitting on the stairs he says, AT THE FRONT DOOR I FELT A DRAFT
AND AFTER I PUT THE DOOR SNAKE,
THE DRAFT, I DIDN'T FEEL IT
ANYMORE SO I KNOW THAT IT
ACTUALLY WORKED REALLY WELL.
THE FABRIC ONES WORKED BETTER
BUT THE SAND ONES; THEY WERE
KINDA FLAT BECAUSE THE
SAND WOULD LIKE FLATTEN OUT.
IMAGINE WHAT THE DOOR SNAKES
WOULD LOOK LIKE WITHOUT THE
GOOGLY EYES.
IT WOULD JUST BE PLAIN.
COULDN'T EVEN CALL
IT A SNAKE ANYMORE.

[Green Squad laughing]

Shakira says, HE GREW SO MUCH JUST MAKING THE
DOOR SNAKES TOGETHER AND I'M SO
GLAD THAT THEY WORKED OUT AND
NOW YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE THEM SO
YOU COULD MAKE MORE FABRIC ONES
WITH SCRAP FABRIC YOU HAVE AT
HOME.

Kasman says, WE STOPPED FIGHTING OVER THE
THERMOSTAT AFTER WE PROGRAMMED
IT AND IT ACTUALLY
WORKED OUT A LOT.
IT SAVED A LOT OF ELECTRICITY.

Shakira says, I'M SO HAPPY THAT THE THERMOSTAT
ARGUMENT HAS BEEN RESOLVED.

Kasman says, EVERYONE SHOULD DO THEIR PART
BECAUSE IF EVERYONE DOES THEIR
PART, THEN THAT'S A BIG
DIFFERENCE HAPPENING RIGHT
THERE.

Shakira says, YOU'RE SO RIGHT, KASMAN.
WHAT YOU'RE DOING IS GREAT BUT
THE BIG DIFFERENCE HAPPENS WHEN
EVERYONE DOES THEIR PART AND
THAT'S HOW YOU CAN REALLY MAKE
AN IMPACT.

Eric says, YOU'RE THE KASMAN
FOR ALL SEASONS.

The entire Green Squad says, GO KASMAN!

[Upbeat music plays]

A person says, WHEE!

Text reads, tvo kids.
