Transcript: T-shirt
In an animation, Andy, a garbologist with brown hair and a beard, drives a small truck through a garbage dump. The truck's roof has a propeller and a solar panel. A wide broom is on the truck's underside. On the side are a tool panel, a vacuum hose, a garbage bin, recycling bins for food and electronic waste, and a blue bin for paper, cans, and bottles.
[Upbeat music plays, tires screeching]
Andy says, YOU WANNA KNOW A SECRET? SOME OF THE BEST STORIES CAN BE FOUND IN YOUR STINKY, SLIMY, ROTTEN TRASH. DON'T BELIEVE ME? CHECK THIS OUT!
The truck takes off. Smiling garbage gathers.
Title: Garbology.
Andy parks his truck by a T-shirt stall in a shopping mall.
[Whirring, upbeat music continues, tires screeching]
Andy says, I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO THE T-SHIRT!
A blue T-shirt jumps onto the stall counter and bows. A yellow hand appears on the front of the shirt.
[Rustling]
Andy says, WHEN IT COMES TO T-SHIRTS, THERE ARE GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS ABOUT THEM.
The T-shirt spins, and the yin-yang symbol appears on the front.
[Whooshing]
Andy says, IF THEY ARE MADE OF NATURAL MATERIAL LIKE PURE COTTON OR HEMP, THEY CAN BIODEGRADE MUCH EASIER.
A roll of cotton and a ball of hemp string appears. Outside on the grass, a T-shirt decomposes. In the mall, the front of the T-shirt changes to a thumbs-up.
[Popping, slide whistle, dinging]
Andy says, BUT IF THEY ARE MADE OF SYNTHETIC OR MAN-MADE MATERIALS, LIKE POLYESTER OR RAYON, IT CAN TAKE HUNDREDS OF YEARS FOR THEM TO DECOMPOSE.
The front of the T-shirt changes to a thumbs-down.
[Buzzer]
Andy says, BUT EVEN ORGANIC MATERIALS HAVE ISSUES. A SINGLE COTTON T-SHIRT CAN TAKE 3,000 LITRES OF WATER TO PRODUCE.
A plastic bottle fills with water. Text reads, “3000 litres.” In the mall, a shocked face emoji appears on the T-shirt.
[Water splashing, whooshing, slide whistle]
Andy says, EITHER WAY, PEOPLE CONSIDER T-SHIRTS VERY DISPOSABLE, SO THEY GO THROUGH THEM VERY FAST.
The t-shirt spins, and a lightning bolt appears on the front. The corner of the shirt tears. The truck drives to the shirt, and the mechanical arm stitches the tear.
[Whooshing, ripping, tires screeching, whirring, scissors snipping thread]
Andy says, TRY TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CLOTHES SO THEY LAST LONGER. FASHIONS MAY CHANGE, BUT THEY WILL ALWAYS COME BACK AROUND.
The T-shirt spins and changes into a tye-died shirt and a tuxedo T-shirt.
[Whooshing]
Andy says, IN GENERAL, CLOTHING PRODUCTION CAN BE EXTREMELY WASTEFUL. DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS ENOUGH FABRIC WASTE IN CLOTHING FACTORIES TO MAKE SIX ADULT SHIRTS FOR EVERYONE ON EARTH PER YEAR?
Six shirts appear around a factory.
[Whistle blowing, popping]
Andy says, AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE DYES.
A skull and crossbones appear on the T-shirt. The image changes to a smiley face.
[Whooshing, bell rings]
Andy says, SO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CLOTHES, BUY ORGANIC FIBRES, AND TRY NOT TO BUY FAST FASHION THAT CHANGES EVERY YEAR. AND WHEN THEY BECOME UNWEARABLE, YOU CAN ALWAYS UPCYCLE YOUR OLD TEES AND TURN THEM INTO SOMETHING NEW. LIKE A BRAIDED RUG, A REUSABLE RAG, A HANGING PLANTER, A THROW PILLOW, OR A CAT HANGOUT.
The mechanical arm picks up the T-shirt and turns it into a rug, a bag, a planter, a throw pillow, and a bag with a cat in it. The cat jumps down to the floor. The T-shirt changes back into a T-shirt.
[Whirring, meowing, whooshing, upbeat music plays]
Andy says, REMEMBER, KIDS: REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE.
He jumps into his truck.
[Grunting]
Andy says, SMELL YOU LATER. IT WAS NICE TO MEET YOU, TEE.
The T-shirt says, DON'T MENTION IT.
Andy looks open-mouthed at the T-shirt. He smiles and drives his truck away from the stall.
[Whirring]
