SOME FUN AND GO FISHING?

The woman closes the lid on her tackle box. She stands from the table and takes the tablet from the girls.
The girl in the jacket says, HEY, I WAS PLAYING ON THAT!
Nonnie says, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE,
WE CAN USE THIS THING
TO LEARN SOMETHING
INSTEAD OF JUST PLAYING GAMES.
Nonnie sits beside the girls. The girls shake their heads.
Nonie says, NOW, THE HAIDA PEOPLE,
THEY DIDN'T HAVE FISHING
RODS AND LURES LIKE WE DO.
THEY HAD TO MAKE THEIR
FISHING HOOKS FROM BONE
AND THE FISHING
LINE FROM THE CEDAR
IN ORDER TO CATCH THEIR MEAL.

The girl in the hoodie sarcastically asks, WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST

Nonnie says, THEY DIDN'T HAVE SUPERMARKETS –
The girl in the jacket interrupts and says, SO THEY JUST WENT TO
A RESTAURANT INSTEAD?
The two girls grin. Nonnie looks annoyed.
She says, NO, SWEETHEARTS.
THE HAIDA PEOPLE HAD TO
LEARN HOW TO HUNT AND FISH.
EVEN RAVEN HAD TO LEARN TO FISH.

Nonnie narrates, RAVEN WAS
FLYING OVER THE SOUTHERN TIP

AND WAS BORED.
Raven flies in a loop.

SINCE HE HAD STIRRED UP
SOME REAL TROUBLE AND
HE MISSED THE ACTION.
BEFORE RAVEN KNEW IT,
THERE WAS NO LAND IN SIGHT.
AND HE WAS SOARING
OVER ENDLESS OCEAN.
Raven says, CAW! I'VE NEVER BEEN THIS FAR
OUTSIDE OF THE HAIDAS BEFORE.
AND WITH NO LAND IN SIGHT. CAW!
GETTING PRETTY HUNGRY TOO.
A pelican flies alongside Raven.
Raven says, HEY THERE, BROWN PELICAN.
IS THERE ANY LAND AROUND HERE?
I'M STARVING.
Brown Pelican says, NOT FOR A WHILE YET, RAVEN.
WHY DON'T YOU TRY
FISHING LIKE I DO?
Brown Pelican dives into the water beak first. Brown Pelican returns, floating on the water with a fish. Brown Pelican eats the fish.
Brown Pelican says, SEE? IT'S EASY.
COME ON, GIVE IT A TRY.
Raven caws. He looks down at the fish swimming in the water below him. Raven dives toward the water. He crashes onto the water with a splash. He splutters.
Raven says, I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED.
I DID IT JUST LIKE YOU DID,
BROWN PELICAN.
Brown Pelican says, WELL, I DO HAVE SMALL
AIR SACS UNDER ME SKIN
WHICH CUSHION ME BODY
WHEN I IMPACT THE WATER
THAT MIGHT HELP.
Raven splutters and flies out of the water.
He says, JEEZ, YOU THINK SO?
Brown Pelican says, HOPE YOU FIND A
MEAL ON LAND, RAVEN.
Nonnie narrates, RAVEN FLEW SOME MORE.
AND THE GRUMBLINGS IN
HIS STOMACH GREW LOUDER.
Raven flies toward land where a heron stands.
Raven says, AH! HEY THERE, GREEN HERON.
ANYTHING TO EAT AROUND HERE?
I FLEW ALL THE WAY
IN FROM THE HAIDAS
AND I'M STARVING.
Green Heron says, HI, RAVEN.
LOTS OF FOOD ON
THE WATER'S EDGE.
NO WORRIES, COME DOWN
HERE AND I'LL SHOW YOU, MATE.
Raven flies in loops before landing beside Green Heron.
Green Heron says, SWEET AS.
NOW PAY ATTENTION
AND I'LL SHOW YOU HOW
EASY IT IS TO CATCH SOMETHING.
Green Heron picks a worm off the ground and places it on the water.
Raven says, THAT'S IT?
I CAN GRAB WORMS ON MY OWN.
YUCK.
Green Heron laughs.
Green Heron says, JUST WAIT, RAVEN.
YOU'LL SEE.
Raven and Green Heron watch the worm floating on the water. A fish swims up to the worm. Green Heron snatches the fish out of the water before it reaches the worm.
Green Heron says, NOW YOU TRY, CUZ.
Raven says, HMM.
Raven looks around. A crab jumps out at him from under a rock and grabs onto his beak.
Raven yells, AH!
Raven tries to shake the crab off.
He says, GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF!
Green Heron laughs.
Green Heron says, TRY SMACKING THE
CRAB AGAINST THE ROCKS.
Raven smacks the crab against the rock.
Raven says, OOF. OOF. OUCH!
Green Heron laughs.
Green Heron says, THAT'S ENOUGH
FUN FOR THE DAY, EH?
Stars circle Raven. The crab still clings to Raven’s beak.
Green Heron says, HOLD STILL A SEC.
Green Heron stabs the crab off Raven’s beak and eats it.
Raven says, ECH, UGH.
WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?
THAT WASN'T AN
EASY MEAL AND IT HURTS.
Green Heron says, HMM, WELL, THE WAY
MY FATHER TAUGHT ME
WAS TO THROW
SMALL TWIGS, INSECTS
AND FEATHERS ON THE WATER.
Green Heron plucks one of Raven’s feathers.
Raven says, HEY!
Green Heron drops the feather onto the water.
Green Heron says, AND THEN WAIT AS FISH
COME UP FOR THE BAIT.
WORKS FOR ME.
A fish swims up to the feather. Green Heron snatches the fish out of the water and eats it.
Green Heron says, SEE? IT'S EASY.
Raven says, YEAH, REALLY EASY, GREEN HERON.
I'M STILL VERY HUNGRY
AND NOW MY NOSE HURTS.
I'M OFF TO HUNT ON LAND.
Raven takes flight.
Green Heron yells, CHEERS, RAVEN!
Raven flies over a forest and a rushing river. He sighs.
Raven says, I AM RAVENOUS.
THOSE SALMON LOOK SO TASTY.
Raven tries, but fails, to capture a salmon from the rushing river. He takes a break on a rock beside the river.
(Growling)
A bear walks into the river and captures a salmon.
Raven says, HOW HARD CAN IT BE?
Raven transforms into a bear.
He says, IF HE CAN DO THIS, SO CAN I.
Raven, as a bear, walks through the river. He captures a salmon with his paw.
(Growling)
Nonnie narrates, IT LOOKS
LIKE RAVEN IS IN
REALLY BIG TROUBLE THIS TIME.
The bear approaches Raven. Raven drops his salmon. The bear glares down at Raven
The bear says, THIS IS MY STREAM AND MY SALMON.
WHO ARE YOU TO
FISH IN MY TERRITORY?
I AM NOOTKA, KING OF UCLUELET.
Raven says, I AM RAVEN BEAR,
TRICKSTER OF THE HAIDAS.
AND I DIDN'T SEE YOUR
NAME ON THE STREAM.
"FRUIT CUP", WAS IT?
Nootka says, MY NAME IS NOOTKA!
NOOTKA!
Nonnie narrates, THIS IS EXACTLY
THE KIND OF EXCITEMENT
THAT RAVEN HAD BEEN CRAVING
ON HIS LONG VOYAGE
ACROSS THE OCEAN.
Raven says, I SURE ATE A LOT OF JUICY SALMON
IN YOUR STREAM, FRUIT CUP.
AND WERE THEY EVER TASTY!
Nootka says, ARRGH!
IT'S NOOTKA!
NOT FRUIT CUP!
NOOTKAAAA!
Nootka glares at Raven. He slips on a rock and falls, landing in front of Raven.
Nootka says, WOAH, WOAH, OOF.
Raven slaps Nootka. Nootka glares at Raven.
He says, YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Raven says, I DO, FRUIT CUP.
YOU MAKE ME LAUGH.
Nootka roars and throws Raven into the river. Raven kicks Nootka back toward a waterfall. Nootka pushes Raven under water until bubbles stop appearing. Nootka grunts and growls.
He says, I AM NOOTKA, KING OF UCLUELET,
AND VANQUISHER OF RAVEN BEAR.
Nootka roars. Raven’s paw reaches up from the water and grabs Nootka. Nootka looks surprised. Raven pulls Nootka into the river with a splash. Raven flies out of the river in his raven form, carrying a fish. Nootka splutters.
Raven says, HEY, FRUIT CUP.
THANKS FOR LUNCH.
SORRY I CAN'T STAY.
Noota says, AH!!
He slaps the fish away from Raven.
Nootka says, IF I SEE YOU AGAIN,
YOU ARE DEAD, LITTLE BLACK BIRD.
AND IT'S NOOTKA!
Nonnie narrates, AS RAVEN FLEW UPWARD,
HE DECIDED THAT HE HAD
HAD ENOUGH ADVENTURE
FOR THE DAY AND
HEADED FOR THE OCEAN
AND BACK HOME TO THE HAIDAS.
Raven caws.
He says, FRUIT CUP SURE WAS
MAD ABOUT THOSE SALMON.
YOU'D THINK HE'D
LET ME JUST EAT ONE.
