[Bright music plays, birds sing]

The tall iron gates in front of the Shelter are open. In front of the greenhouse, Audrey and Jack sit on a flat rock. Jack searches through Audrey’s red hair.

Audrey says, UGH, COME ON, TOMMY!

[Rattling]

Audrey stands and says, OH?

Karl puts down the end of a red wheelbarrow and waves to Audrey.

Audrey says, OH, HELLO, KARL!

Audrey asks Jack, WHERE IS HE?

Behind Audrey, Tommy arrives on his red bicycle.

[Rustling]

Audrey shouts, HM? OH! TOMMY!
COME QUICK!
WE'VE GOT A NEW GUEST!

Audrey runs behind Tommy and pushes him towards the veterinary clinic. His bicycle falls over.

[Dirt rustles, thunk]

Tommy says, UH... OKAY.
HI, JACK!

Tommy waves to Jack. Audrey pushes Tommy into the clinic.

Audrey says, SORRY, JACK.

Audrey pokes her head through the clinic doorway and looks at Jack.

Audrey asks YOU'RE NOT MAD AT ME?

[Door slams]

Audrey says, TOMMY, ALLOW ME TO
INTRODUCE...

Hector, Audrey’s dad, holds a baby bottle.

Tommy says, UH, BUT I ALREADY
KNOW YOUR FATHER, AUDREY.

Hector says, HI THERE, TOMMY.

Tommy says, HELLO, HECTOR!

Hector points to an overturned box on the floor.

[Whoosh]

Hector says, THE NEW LITTLE GUY
IS HIDING UNDER HERE.
HE'S TERRIFIED.

Hector lifts the box. Tommy and Audrey’s pupils get larger.

[Bright music plays]

Audrey and Tommy say, AW!

A small kangaroo-like animal looks at Audrey, Tommy, and Hector.

Audrey says, A BABY KANGAROO!

Tommy says, UM... ARE YOU SURE?
HE LOOKS TOO SMALL TO BE
A KANGAROO.

HE COULD BE A WALLABY, THOUGH.

Hector says, WELL DONE, TOMMY!
HOPS IS A ROCK WALLABY,
TO BE EXACT.
AND HE'S STILL VERY YOUNG.

Tommy asks, WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS PARENTS?

Hector says, THEY WERE LOST IN A FIRE.

In a flashback, Hops cowers in the shadow of a fire.

[Flames hiss]

In the present, Hector says, HE'LL STAY WITH US
FOR A WHILE,
AND THEN WHEN HE'S BIGGER,
HE'LL RETURN TO THE NATURE
RESERVE IN AUSTRALIA.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT HE WON'T LET
ANYONE CLOSE ENOUGH
TO GIVE HIM A BOTTLE!

Audrey says, LUCKILY, I'M HERE NOW!
COME HERE, HOPS.

Audrey holds the bottle out towards Hops. Hops moves away and sits down. He taps his foot on the floor.

[Hops squeaks, thumping]

Audrey asks, HEY, WHAT'S HE DOING?

Tommy says, OOH! I HEARD SOMETHING
ABOUT THAT!

ROCK WALLABIES TAP THE GROUND
WITH THEIR PAWS
WHEN THEY'RE SCARED!

Hops taps the ground.

[Thumping, upbeat music notes play]

Tommy whispers, I THINK YOU'RE SCARING HIM
A BIT, AUDREY.

Audrey says, HUH? ME? IMPOSSIBLE.
ANIMALS LOVE ME!

[Whoosh]

Audrey says, COME HERE HOPS, I'M YOUR BUDDY!

Hops jumps away from Audrey.

[Thump]

Tommy asks, UH, CAN I GIVE IT A TRY?

Audrey says, OH!

Audrey gives Tommy the bottle. Tommy crawls on the floor towards Hops, pushing the bottle with his nose.

[Rustling, Tommy grunts softly]

Tommy says IT'S OKAY...
TAKE YOUR TIME.

[Hops chitters, gentle music plays]

Tommy says, I JUST WANT TO--

Hops knocks the bottle over. Hops jumps to Tommy and licks his face.

[Clatter, slurping, Tommy giggles]

Tommy says, OH BOY! HELLO, YOU!

Audrey says, WOW! THAT'S INCREDIBLE, TOMMY!

Hector says I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING
LIKE IT!

Audrey says, HUH?

[Upbeat music plays]

Hector rubs Audrey’s head.

Hector says, WELL, EXCEPT WITH YOU,
SWEETIE.

Tommy cradles Hops in his lap and feeds him the bottle.

[Gulping]

Tommy says, AW, YOU ARE SO ADORABLE!
HE LIKES ME A LOT!

Hector says, YES, HE'S QUITE ATTACHED!
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPEND
THE WHOLE DAY WITH HIM, TOMMY?
JUST UNTIL YOU HAVE TO GO HOME,
OF COURSE.

Tommy says, OH YES! I'LL TAKE REALLY
GOOD CARE OF YOU TODAY, HOPSIE!

In the greenhouse, Tommy unzips his yellow knapsack. Hops stands on Tommy’s right, and Audrey stands on his left.

[Birds chirp, zipper zips]

Tommy says I'LL PUT HIM IN MY BAG
TO CARRY HIM AROUND EVERYWHERE.
IT'LL REMIND HIM OF
HIS MOTHER'S BELLY POUCH!

Hops jumps into the knapsack.

[Rustling, gentle music plays]

Tommy says, AWW!

In the greenhouse, Tommy and Audrey walk in the forest. Tommy wears his knapsack backwards so it hangs in front of his stomach.

[Birds chirp, footsteps rustle]

Tommy asks, SO? DO YOU LIKE
YOUR NEW HOME?

[Hops chitters]

Tommy asks, NOT BAD, HUH?

Audrey points at a rocky outcrop.

Audrey says, OH LOOK! HE SHOULD LOVE THAT
IF HE'S A ROCK WALLABY!

Audrey runs to the rocks and climbs to a ledge near the top.

[Whooshing, footsteps tap, Audrey grunts, birds chirp, bright music plays]

Audrey says, COME ON, HOPS!
CLIMB ON UP!

Tommy says, UH... I'M NOT SURE.
WHAT IF HE GETS HURT?

Audrey says IT'S NOT THAT HARD!

Audrey loses her balance and rights herself.

[Rustling]

Audrey says, WHOA! AH! OKAY.
MAYBE A LITTLE.
BUT HOPS IS A WILD ANIMAL!
HE'S GOT TO LEARN TO DO
THESE THINGS!

Tommy says, OH, OKAY.
YOU CAN GIVE IT A TRY, HOPS.
DON'T BE SCARED,
I'M RIGHT HERE.

Tommy puts the knapsack on a rock, and Hops cautiously hops out. Hops jumps from rock to rock, slips, regains his footing, and then hops up to Audrey.

[Whooshing, chittering, Tommy groans, tense music plays]

Audrey says YOU SEE THAT? HE'S REALLY GOOD!

Tommy says, YEAH! HE'S A CHAMPION
CLIMBER!

A creature peers between two bushes behind Hops and Audrey. Juniper, a Darwin fox, leaves the bushes and stalks forward.

[Growling, Audrey laughs]

Tommy shouts, HOPS! CAREFUL, SHE'S
A DARWIN FOX, A PREDATOR!
OH NO! STAY AWAY FROM HER!

Tommy climbs the rocks. Juniper and Hops sniff noses. Tommy grabs Hops and puts him back into the knapsack.

[Whooshing, dramatic music plays, sniffing, rustling]

Tommy says SHE COULD ATTACK YOU!

Audrey asks Juniper, WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?

Pat stops her S.U.V. at the base of the rocky outcrop and looks up at Tommy and Audrey.

[Engine hums, birds chirp]

Pat says, AH THERE YOU ARE JUNIPER!
SHE DOESN'T USUALLY LEAVE
HER TERRITORY.

I WONDER WHAT SHE'S DOING HERE.

Audrey slides down a vine. She carries Juniper. Tommy carefully jumps down on the rocks, carrying Hops in his knapsack.

[Creaking, gentle music plays]

Audrey says, MAYBE SHE CAME TO SAY
HI TO HOPS!

HE'S A SPECIAL LITTLE GUY.

Pat takes Juniper.

[Rustling]

Pat says I'LL BRING HER BACK TO HER PLACE. COULD YOU CLEAN THE SAIGA ANTELOPE SHELTER OUT FOR ME?

Audrey says, NO PROBLEM, I'M ON IT!

At the antelope shelter, an antelope grazes beneath the blazing sun. Tommy and Audrey arrive.

[Birds chirp]

Tommy says IT'S PERFECT HERE.
IT'S NICE AND QUIET
AND THERE'S NO DANGER!

RIGHT, HOPSIE?

Hops jumps out of the knapsack, and Tommy pets him.

Audrey exclaims, OH WOW!

Hops startles and hides behind Tommy. Audrey looks at the dirty shelter with a broken wooden board.

[Dramatic music plays]

Audrey says, OKAY, THERE'S A LOT TO DO.
LET'S GET THIS CLEAN-UP STARTED!

Audrey runs past Tommy and Hops. Tommy arches an eyebrow. Hops jumps back in front of Tommy. Audrey takes out a leaf blower, and Hops taps his foot nervously. Hops hides behind Tommy.

[Whirring, whooshing, thumping]

Tommy shouts, STOP IT, AUDREY!
YOU'RE SCARING HIM!

Audrey turns off the leaf blower. Hops jumps into the knapsack, and Tommy puts it on.

[Gentle music plays]

Tommy says, OOH, HIS LITTLE HEART'S
BEATING SO FAST!

SORRY, AUDREY.
I'M BRINGING HIM BACK
TO THE NURSERY.

Tommy leaves with Hops.

In front of the greenhouse, Tommy sits on a large flat rock. Hops lies curled up, sleeping in front of him.

[Birds chirp, Hops breathes deeply, door clatters]

Tommy says, HUH?

Audrey emerges from the greenhouse, covered with dirt.

Audrey says, AH! THERE WE GO! THE SAIGA'S
SHELTER IS ALL CLEAN!
AND I FOUND A GIANT
SPIDER'S NEST!

Audrey shakes off the dirt.

[Rustling, upbeat music plays]

Tommy says, SHH!

Audrey says, OH! IS IT NAP TIME?

Tommy says, MM-HMM.

[Hops breathes deeply, Audrey giggles]

Audrey runs into a garage.

Audrey shouts, AWESOME!

A soccer ball bounces out of the garage.

[Clattering, thumping]

Audrey shouts, NOW WE CAN PLAY
SOME SOCCER.

Tommy says, UH, I DON'T KNOW
ABOUT THAT.

Audrey says, WHAT? BUT WE HAVEN'T PLAYED
AT ALL TODAY!

AND YOU'LL HAVE TO GO
HOME SOON.

Tommy says, OH UH... OKAY.

Tommy and Audrey play soccer. Hops opens his eyes. He hops towards Tommy.

[Upbeat music plays, thumping, laughter, sniffing]

Tommy says, OH NO, WE WOKE HIM UP!

Hops headbutts the ball out from beneath Tommy’s foot.

Tommy says, OH!
DID YOU SEE THAT,
HE KNOWS HOW TO PLAY!

Audrey, cheers, AWESOME! GO
ON, KICK IT, HOPS!

Hops leans on the soccer ball and falls asleep.

[Audrey laughs, lullaby plays]

Audrey says, OKAY, I GET IT!
THAT'S ENOUGH SOCCER
FOR TODAY!

YOU CAN GO WITH PAT,
TOMMY HAS TO GO BACK HOME.

Tommy says, WAIT, WAIT, LET ME!
I'LL BRING YOU THERE
IN YOUR POUCH, OKAY, HOPSIE.

In the greenhouse, a green bird catches a worm. Pat kneels and holds a bowl in front of Juniper. As Juniper eats, Tommy and Audrey approach from behind.

[Gulping, birds chirp]

Audrey says, HEY, PAT!
TOMMY HAS TO GO BACK HOME.

CAN YOU TAKE CARE OF OUR LITTLE
FRIEND FOR THE NIGHT?

Pat says, OF COURSE!

[Juniper growls]

Juniper walks to the knapsack, and Hops leans out. They sniff noses.

[Sniffing, tense music plays]

Tommy says, STAY RIGHT THERE,
JUNIPER!

Tommy backs away from Juniper.

[Birds chirp, Juniper whines sadly, Hops chitters]

Pat says, DON'T YOU WORRY, TOMMY.
I'LL TAKE IT FROM HERE.

YOU'RE GOING TO SLEEP
IN YOUR OWN SHELTER TONIGHT!
HOW'S THAT SOUND?

Tommy asks, HE'S GOING TO SLEEP
ALL ALONE?

OOH, LOOK, HE WANTS ME
TO STAY WITH HIM!

Hops jumps to Tommy.

[Upbeat music plays, rustling]

Audrey says, BUT TOMMY, HE NEEDS TO GET
USED TO SPENDING TIME ALONE!
AND ALSO, YOU CAN'T STAY
THE WHOLE NIGHT WITH HIM...

Tommy says, HEY, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA!
I'LL GO AND ASK MY PARENTS
IF IT'S OKAY.

I'LL BE RIGHT BACK!

[Tommy laughs, chittering]

Tommy runs away from Audrey and Pat. Audrey shrugs at Pat.

Inside the veterinary clinic, Tommy puts down a notebook and pencil case, unrolls a sleeping bag, and puts down a lantern.

[Clunk, whoosh, upbeat music plays]

Audrey exclaims, WOW. DID YOU BRING EVERYTHING
IN YOUR HOUSE OR WHAT?

Tommy says, NAH, JUST THE BARE
NECESSITIES

SO MY FRIEND HOPS HERE
AND I WILL BE COMFORTABLE
FOR THE WHOLE NIGHT.

Audrey says, YOU KNOW, TOMMY, TAKING CARE
OF AN ANIMAL AT NIGHT
IS A LOT DIFFERENT THAN TAKING
CARE OF THEM DURING THE DAY!

YOU REALLY WANT TO DO IT?

Tommy says, YES, OF COURSE, I DO,
HOPS NEEDS ME!

I'M GOING TO BE HERE FOR HIM.

[Audrey sighs]

Audrey says, OKAY. HAVE FUN THEN!

Later, the crescent moon glows in the starry sky over the Wilde Shelter.

[Soft music plays, animals call, sniffing]

Tommy’s shadow is cast against a wall. Hops jumps to him and grabs his book.

Tommy says, OH NO, HOPS!
MY MATH BOOK!

Lights flash on a walkie-talkie.

[Static]

In her bedroom, Audrey sits on her bed beside an open notebook. She holds a walkie-talkie.

Audrey whispers into the walkie-talkie, HEY, WHAT'RE DOING?
I JUST FINISHED DOING
THE MATH HOMEWORK!
YOU? OVER.

In the clinic, Tommy looks at his torn math book.

Tommy says into the walkie-talkie, UH...
I'M ALMOST FINISHED,
EVERYTHING'S GOING
ALRIGHT ON THIS END!

GOOD NIGHT, AUDREY.
OVER AND OUT.

[Tommy chuckles nervously]

In her bedroom, Audrey narrows her eyes.

She says, HMM...

In the clinic, Tommy lies down in his sleeping bag. Hops settles in the knapsack beside him.

Tommy says, SLEEP TIGHT, MY LITTLE HOPSIE!

Tommy turns off his lantern.

[Click]

[Clattering]

Tommy turns on the lantern. Hops stands on a countertop. Books and food lie scattered on the ground.

[Click, chittering, Tommy groans, playful music plays]

Tommy picks up Hops and puts him back in the knapsack. Tommy turns off the lantern.

[Click, boinging]

Tommy turns on the lantern. Hops happily jumps up and down on Tommy’s stomach.

[Playful music continues, clicking]

The lantern turns off and then on again. Hops licks Tommy’s face.

[Slurping]

The lantern turns off and on throughout the night.

[Clicking, clattering, squeaking, chomping]

The next morning, Audrey opens a door in the clinic.

[Birds chirp, door creaks]

Audrey says, GOOD MORNING! SLEEP WELL?

Audrey stares at the messy room. Tommy lies on a scratching post with a bird feeder on top.

[Groaning]

Tommy says, UH, YEAH, WELL...
NOT REALLY.

Hops sleeps in the knapsack on top of the sleeping bag.

Audrey says, NO? SERIOUSLY?

Audrey smiles.

[Gentle music plays]

Tommy says, AW... YOU WERE RIGHT.
IT WAS AWFUL!

I CAN'T KEEP TAKING CARE
OF HIM ALL THE TIME,
BUT I DON'T WANT
TO ABANDON HIM TOO.

Audrey says, NO, YOU WOULDN'T BE
ABANDONING HIM,
HE'S A WILD ANIMAL!

Tommy says, BUT HE'S GONNA FEEL
SO LONELY WITHOUT ME...

Audrey asks, WHAT IF WE FOUND HIM
AN ANIMAL FRIEND?

THAT'LL HELP HIM BE MORE
INDEPENDENT,
AND HE'LL HAVE A COMPANION!

I'M SURE WE'LL FIND SOMEONE
HE LIKES!

In the greenhouse, Tommy wears the knapsack over his stomach. Hops peeks out of the knapsack at Rina, a small rhinoceros. Hops ducks lower into the knapsack.

[Upbeat music plays, Rina grunts, Hops squeaks]

Tommy says, OH...

A gold-coloured monkey offers Hops food, and Hops hides in the knapsack.

[Rustling]

Audrey says, HMM.

Hops crawls around to Tommy’s back and hides beneath his shirt.

[Tommy shouts, Hops squeaks, laughter]

Audrey and Tommy introduce Hops to other animals. Hops jumps away from a sloth.

[Upbeat music continues, grunts, bushes rustle]

At the rocky outcrop, Tommy lies back on a rock. Audrey crouches in front of him and stares down at the ground. Hops jumps from rock to rock, climbing towards the top.

[Upbeat music plays]

Tommy says, WE HAVE TRIED EVERY ANIMAL,
THE GENTLEST,
THE CUTEST AND THE CALMEST
IN THE WHOLE REFUGE!
MAYBE IN THE WHOLE WORLD, EVEN!
AND HOPSIE WAS SCARED OF
EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Audrey says, YEAH, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU
MIGHT HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF HIM
FROM NOW ON!

Tommy says, OH?

Audrey teases, JUST KIDDING!

[Yelping, birds chirp, rustling, tense music plays]

At the top of the rocks, Juniper jumps out of bushes and slowly approaches Hops.

Tommy shouts, OH NO! HOPS, COME BACK!
SHE'S DANGEROUS!

Audrey says, TOMMY, WAIT! I THINK JUNIPER
WANTS TO PLAY.

Tommy says, OH REALLY, YOU THINK SO?

Audrey says, JUST LOOK!
SHE'S WAGGING HER TAIL,
THAT MEANS SHE'S HAPPY!

Juniper wags her tail and sits down in front of Hops. Hops jumps forward and licks Juniper’s nose.

[Soft music plays, slurping]

Tommy says, OH WOW, THAT'S AMAZING!
HE LIKES HER!

SEE THAT? JUNIPER'S TAKING
CARE OF HOPS
LIKE HE'S HER LITTLE BROTHER.

Hops follows Juniper from rock to rock and then hops down to Tommy.

[Whooshing]

Tommy says, OH, HOPSIE!
YOU'VE FOUND A NEW FRIEND!
OH, I'M SO PROUD OF YOU.

[Upbeat music plays]

Audrey says, IN THE WILD,
THEY'D BE ENEMIES, FOR SURE.
BUT HERE, AT THE REFUGE,
ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE.

Tommy puts Hops on the ground. Audrey and Pat stand with their hands on their hips. Juniper stands beside Pat.

[Upbeat music plays, birds chirp]

Tommy says, HERE YOU GO! NOW YOU TWO
CAN STAY TOGETHER AT NIGHT
AND YOU WON'T BE SCARED!
OH HEY, PAT?

WOULD YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE
A BOTTLE?

Pat winks and opens a pouch with three bottles.

[Click]

Pat says, MM-HMM.

Tommy says, HAVE FUN WITH
YOUR PAL JUNIPER, HOPSIE!
SEE YOU LATER!

Hops follows Juniper. Tommy watches them sadly.

[Hops chitters, soft music plays, rustling]

Audrey says, DON'T WORRY, TOMMY.
YOU'LL ALWAYS BE
HIS WALLABY DAD!

Audrey playfully slaps Tommy on his back.

[Thump, birds chirp]

Tommy says, THANKS. HMM...
HEY! THAT MEANS THE TWO OF US
CAN GO BACK TO PLAYING BALL.

[Upbeat music plays]

Audrey says, NAH, MAYBE LATER.
OKAY?

I'M GOING TO PLAY WITH JACK.

[Whooshing, giggling]

Audrey says, JUST KIDDING!
ALRIGHT, COME ON, LET'S PLAY!

Tommy chases Audrey. In a shady spot beside bushes, Juniper curls her tail around Hops, and they both fall asleep.

[Hops chitters]

[Upbeat music plays]
