A flock of Canada geese fly over the Wilde Shelter, a tall greenhouse filled with plants and animals. The geese also fly over a veterinary clinic and a two-storey house.

Inside the greenhouse, Audrey, a girl with her red hair in a ponytail, stands on a tree branch. She wears a yellow jacket over an olive green shirt, black pants, and brown boots. Audrey whistles and startles butterflies. Standing on a rock nearby, Tommy watches Jack, a gorilla, land on the branch beside Audrey. Tommy wears a green long-sleeve shirt and blue pants. His black curly hair is short.

Audrey swings on a vine with a golden lion tamarin clinging to her head. Tommy rides on Jack’s back as Jack swings from a second vine.
A person sings, OH, CAN YOU HEAR THEM,
ANIMALS ARE CALLING.
THEY ARE IN DANGER.
Audrey stands as she slides down a rock past Karl and Pat. Karl, a slender young man with black hair, watches Audrey slide past. He wears an olive green vest, a dark green hat, a yellow shirt, red pants, and red-rimmed eyeglasses. Pat bottle-feeds a large grey kitten with black spots. Her black hair is pulled into a ponytail, and she wears an olive green vest and a yellow tee shirt.

The singer sings, NATURE'S OUR PASSION,
READY FOR ACTION.
Audrey and Jack, still carrying Tommy, run past Jonas, a man with curly red hair. He lifts a rake over his head and spins as they pass.
[Whooshing, upbeat music continues]

Audrey pulls leaves to the side and reveals Tommy in a clearing with Jack, a giraffe, an elephant, and a gazelle.

The tall iron gates in front of the Shelter are open. Tommy rides his red bicycle through a puddle and then down the path towards the greenhouse. Audrey’s mom stands on a lift, rising behind a van. The lift is attached to a trailer connected to a yellow sports utility vehicle. The van has a picture of a panda on the side.
Tommy turns to look and loses control of his bicycle. He wobbles through puddles and stops centimetres from Audrey.
[Whirring, splashing, squeaking, exclamations]
Tommy says, HUH?
WHOA, WAH!
Audrey says, AH!
[Tommy laughs, birds chirp]
Tommy says, HELLO, AUDREY!
WHAT'S THE ZOO'S VAN
DOING HERE?
[Upbeat music plays]
Audrey says, HI! THE STORM FLOODED
THEIR PANDA'S ENCLOSURE,
SO, UNTIL THEY CAN COME UP WITH
A SOLUTION TO THEIR PROBLEM,
THEY'VE ENTRUSTED
THE GREATEST ZOOLOGIST
IN ALL THE AREA WITH IT!
Tommy says, HOLD ON, ARE YOU SAYING...
THEY GAVE IT TO YOUR MOM?!
Audrey’s mom taps on the back of the zoo van. She stands on the trailer beside a large object covered by a tarp. Audrey and Tommy run to the trailer.
[Audrey and Tommy laugh]
Audrey’s mom pulls the tarp off a crate and reveals the giant panda.
Audrey and Tommy say, WOW!
Tommy says, A REAL GIANT PANDA!
THAT'S AWESOME!
IT'S RARE TO COME ACROSS THEM,
UNLESS YOU TAKE
A TRIP TO CHINA!
Tommy moves towards the crate. A young man with short red hair and red freckles on his cheeks steps between Tommy and the crate. The man with the freckles holds a book under his left arm and raises his right hand.
[Whoosh, birds chirp]
The man with the freckles says, NO, NO, NO! YOU HAVE
TO KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE.
WE DON'T WANT TO SCARE HIM.
Audrey’s mom says, KIDS, I'D LIKE YOU
TO MEET DAMIEN.
HE'S THE INSPECTOR IN CHARGE
OF HUAN'S FILE.
HE'S HERE TO MAKE SURE
WE TAKE THE UTMOST CARE
OF THIS DEAR PANDA.
The man with the freckles, Damien, says, MM-HMM!
Audrey says, WELL, OF COURSE WE'LL TAKE
GOOD CARE OF HIM!
WE DO THAT WITH EVERY ANIMAL
HERE AT THE REFUGE.
Damien says, BUT PANDAS AREN'T LIKE
EVERY OTHER ANIMAL, LITTLE GIRL.
THEY'RE NATIONAL TREASURES.
I WILL THEREFORE INSIST
THAT YOU ENSURE THE SAFETY
OF HUAN BY FOLLOWING
THE PROTOCOL
TO... THE... LETTER!
Damien pats the cover of his book.
[Tapping]
Audrey and Tommy say, HMM? MM-HMM!
Audrey and Tommy look at each other and then salute Damien.
Audrey’s mom says, DON'T YOU WORRY,
DAMIEN. I'M QUITE SURE HUAN
WILL FEEL RIGHT AT HOME
IN OUR REFUGE IN NO TIME AT ALL!
[Damien chuckles]
Damien says, WELL, HE'D BETTER!
IF HE DOESN'T FIT IN,
WE'LL HAVE TO SEND HIM
TO ANOTHER REFUGE POST HASTE!
Audrey, Tommy, and Audrey’s mom say, UH...
[Audrey’s mom gulps]
Audrey’s mom says, PAT'S SETTING UP
HUAN'S ENCLOSURE.
LET'S GO TAKE A LOOK!
Pat and Karl put Huan’s crate on the ground by a fence.
[Panting, scraping, birds sing]
Damien says, RIGHT HERE'S GOOD.
Tommy says, WOW! THIS IS AN AWESOME AREA!
SOME OF THE OTHER ANIMALS
MIGHT BE JEALOUS.
Platforms built around trees have ropes dangling from them. One platform has a tire swing. A line of large rubber tires pokes out of the dirt. Colourful banners hang on poles.
Pat says, I TRIED TO MAKE THIS ENCLOSURE
IDENTICAL TO HIS OLD ONE,
TO MAKE HIM FEEL AT HOME.
[Damien gasps]
Damien says, IDENTICAL, YOU SAY?
I DON'T REMEMBER
THIS BEING THERE!
Damien pushes the tire swing.
[Swing squeaks]
Pat says, YES, IT'S NEW!
I FOUND THE SPACE
WAS MISSING FUN THINGS
AND COLOR, SO I DECIDED TO ADD
A FEW THINGS.
Damien says, MM-HMM. I SEE.
PLEASE REMOVE THEM.
THESE DISTRACTIONS
MIGHT UPSET HUAN.
AND FROM NOW ON,
I WOULD RECOMMEND
YOU FOLLOW THE PROTOCOL.
UNDERSTOOD?
Audrey’s mom elbows Pat’s side.
[Rustling]
Audrey’s mom says, ABSOLUTELY! UNDERSTOOD!
WE'LL DO EVERYTHING WE CAN
TO ADAPT THE REFUGE
TO HUAN'S NEEDS.
Audrey’s mom pats Pat’s shoulder.
[Chuckles nervously, patting]
Damien says, ANYWAY...
LET'S SEE HOW HUAN REACTS.
Damien lifts the grate on the front of the crate, and Huan cowers inside.
Audrey and Tommy say, WOW!
Huan turns and hides his face. Damien looks in his book.
[Huan squeals nervously, pages flip]
Audrey and Tommy say, HUH?
[Whimpering]
Damien says, THIS IS VERY BAD.
HE CLEARLY DOESN'T
FEEL SAFE ENOUGH IN YOUR
ENCLOSURE TO LEAVE HIS CRATE.
Audrey says gently, OH... HELLO, HUAN!
Damien waves a finger at Audrey.
Damien says, MMM, MMM, MMM!
Audrey says, HE JUST GOT HERE!
HE NEEDS TO SETTLE IN!
Damien says, YES, WELL, THAT'S THE PROBLEM.
WE DON'T HAVE TIME.
[Watch beeps]
Damien says, AH! MEAL TIME!
HIS FOOD! WHERE IS YOUR BAMBOO?
SHOW ME, PLEASE.
Audrey’s mom says, IT'S THIS WAY.
PAT WILL TAKE YOU.
[Audrey’s mom chuckles nervously, Pat grumbles]
Audrey’s mom says, KIDS, I'LL LET YOU
WATCH OVER HUAN.
BUT DON'T GET TOO CLOSE TO HIM.
I DON'T WANT TO UPSET
OUR FRIEND DAMIEN. UNDERSTOOD?
Audrey says, HMM?
Audrey and Tommy nod and say, MM-HMM.
Audrey’s mom walks away from the crate. Jack leaps into the enclosure and stops in front of Audrey and Tommy.
Audrey says, HELLO, JACK!
[Jack grunts]
Audrey says, THIS HERE IS HUAN!
AND HE'S A PANDA!
Audrey uses sign language and signs the word panda. Jack copies the sign.
[Jack grunts, Huan squeals nervously, gentle music plays]
Audrey says, AH!
Audrey gently rolls a blue ball to Huan. Huan sniffs the ball and rolls it away from the crate.
[Rustling, sniffing, small squeal]
Jack stops the ball and rolls it back to Huan.
[Jack grunts]
Tommy says, WOW! HE'S PLAYING! SO COOL!
[Audrey giggles, excited grunting]
In the greenhouse, a bird flies over a bamboo grove. Damien and Audrey’s mom follow Pat into the grove.
[Bird screeches, footsteps rustle, upbeat music plays]
Audrey’s mom says, OUR GARDENER, JONAS,
INSTALLED THIS BAMBOO GROVE
ESPECIALLY FOR HUAN.
OH, HELLO, JONAS!
UH, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Jonas plays a short bamboo shoot like a flute.
[Soft melody plays]
Jonas says, WELL, CAN'T YOU SEE?
I'M PLAYING MUSIC
TO HELP THE BAMBOO GROW!
Damien taps on a bamboo shoot. He licks it.
[Annoyed grumbling, tapping, he gasps, slurping]
Damien says, WAIT... AM I DREAMING, OR DOES
THIS BAMBOO COME FROM HUBEI?
I SPECIFICALLY SAID THE BAMBOO
MUST COME FROM SICHUAN.
Jonas says, YES, BUT APART
FROM BEING BETTER,
THIS VARIETY'S
ALSO MORE NUTRITIOUS.
AND PANDAS LOVE IT!
Damien gestures at his book.
Damien says, HUAN EATS BAMBOO FROM SICHUAN.
NINETY-NINE PERCENT
OF A PANDA'S REGULAR DIET
CONSISTS OF BAMBOO.
THIS CHANGE COULD UPSET
HIS DIGESTION!
Jonas says, NO CHANCE OF THAT!
I KNOW THIS VARIETY IS GREAT
FOR THE DIGESTION.
I MADE A TEA FOR MYSELF
OUT OF IT!
[Audrey’s mom chuckles nervously]
Damien says, ALRIGHT... I GUESS WE'LL JUST
HAVE TO DEAL WITH
WHAT WE'VE GOT.
Damien walks away from Jonas. Jonas gives Pat bamboo.
Jonas says, HEY, THAT YOUNG MAN
SEEMS A BIT ON EDGE.
SOME OF THAT TEA
MIGHT SORT HIM.
Huan stands at the edge of his crate and pushes the ball to Jack.
[Upbeat music plays, happy animal grunts]
Tommy says, YOU SEE, HUAN?
YOU'VE ALREADY MADE
A NEW FRIEND AT THE REFUGE!
[Laughing]
Damien says, HMM?
[Damien screams]
Damien asks, IS THAT HOW YOU WELCOME ANIMALS
TO YOUR REFUGE?
BY LETTING CHILDREN
AND GORILLAS TERRORIZE THEM?
SHAME! SHAME ON YOU!
Huan retreats further back into his crate.
[Grumbles]
Audrey’s mom says, I THOUGHT I MADE MYSELF CLEAR
THAT YOU CAN'T GET CLOSE TO HIM!
Audrey says, BUT, MOM, HUAN SEEMED
SO SAD AND LONELY.
[Gentle music plays]
Audrey’s mom says, IF HUAN DOESN'T
SETTLE IN AT THE REFUGE,
THEY'LL HAVE TO SEND HIM
TO ANOTHER ONE.
IF YOU WANT HIM
TO STAY WITH US,
WE MUST FOLLOW
DAMIEN'S INSTRUCTIONS!
IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?
Tommy and Audrey say, MM-HMM...
[Watch beeps]
Damien says, THAT'S ENOUGH!
MAY I POINT OUT, HUAN STILL
HASN'T EATEN ANYTHING TODAY?!
WE'RE ALREADY BEHIND SCHEDULE!
Damien taps his book. Pat carries bamboo towards the crate.
[Tapping, Pat grumbles]
Pat puts the bamboo on the grass by the crate.
[Huan sniffs, upbeat music plays]
Huan walks out of his crate and sits down. Damien’s eye twitches.
Damien says, PANDAS HAVE BAD EYESIGHT.
YOU SHOULD BRING
THE BAMBOO CLOSER.
Damien picks up a piece of bamboo and walks towards Huan.
Tommy says, UH, EXCUSE ME, SIR,
BUT I DON'T THINK THAT'S
A VERY GOOD IDEA.
Audrey’s mom says, HERE, WE DON'T FORCE
THE ANIMALS TO DO ANYTHING
THEY DON'T WANT. WE LET THEM
DEVELOP THEIR OWN RHYTHM.
Damien waves the bamboo in front of Huan’s face. Huan knocks the food out of Damien’s hand and turns away.
[Roaring, Damien whimpers]
Damien says, THERE, YOU SEE! I TOLD YOU!
HUAN DOES NOT LIKE
THIS KIND OF BAMBOO.
I'M GOING TO HAVE TO BRING SOME
FOOD FROM THE ZOO
IF HE DOESN'T EAT IT.
Audrey says, UGH, IS HE SERIOUS?
THE BAMBOO ISN'T THE PROBLEM.
[Watch beeps]
Damien says, AH! IT'S TIME
FOR HIS EXERCISES!
PANDAS IN CAPTIVITY
NEED TO WORK OUT.
YOU CAN GET HIM TO WALK AROUND
THE ENCLOSURE
BY USING THIS APPLE.
TWELVE TIMES AROUND IS ENOUGH.
Huan scratches the ground. Damien holds a stick with an apple dangling from a string.
Damien says, CATCH THE APPLE, HUAN.
COME ON, TRY AND CATCH IT!
Audrey whispers, DOESN'T HE SEE THAT ALL THIS
DOES IS STRESS OUT HUAN?
Damien says, ARE YOU TRYING
TO MAKE ME LOOK BAD?
Damien hits Huan’s ear with the apple. Huan claws the ground.
[Huan grumbles, tapping, scratching, growling]
Damien says, GET IT! COME ON!
Huan knocks the apple off the string.
[Dramatic music plays, Huan roars, Damien whimpers, everyone gasps]
Huan knocks over his crate. He scratches an enclosure wall.
[Huan roars, crashing, scratching]
Audrey’s mom says, THAT'S ENOUGH!
EVERYBODY OUT!
HUAN NEEDS HIS SPACE!
Audrey’s mom holds a door open.
[Creak]
Jack and the humans leave the enclosure.
Damien says, I'VE NEVER SEEN HUAN
IN SUCH A STATE!
OBVIOUSLY, HE DOESN'T LIKE
THIS REFUGE.
WE'LL HAVE TO SEND HIM
SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Audrey says, WHAT? WE CAN'T JUST GIVE UP
LIKE THAT!
HE JUST NEEDS A LITTLE TIME
TO GET USED TO US.
Audrey’s mom shuts the enclosure door.
[Creak, click, gentle music plays]
Audrey’s mom says, I AGREE WITH MY DAUGHTER,
DAMIEN. DON'T YOU THINK IT'S A BIT
EARLY TO JUST GIVE UP?
Damien says, UH, UH... NO, I DON'T!
YOU'VE GONE AGAINST
THE PROTOCOL FROM THE START!
PUT HIM BACK IN THE CRATE!

Audrey says, HUH? MOM!

Damien paces and holds his cell phone to his ear.
Damien speaks into the cell phone, MM-HMM! YES. YES.
Audrey’s mom says, I KNOW,

WILL DISTRACT DAMIEN
WHILE YOU TWO WORK ON
LIFTING HUAN'S MORALE.
Tommy says, WE'RE ON IT!
[Audrey giggles]
Audrey and Tommy run into the enclosure.
[Door creaks]
Damien says, YES. GOODBYE!
[Cellphone beeps]
Damien says, I'VE CALLED FOR THE VAN.
IT'LL BE HERE SOON.
Audrey’s mom says, WHILE WE'RE WAITING,
WHY DON'T WE HAVE A LOOK AT OUR
STATE-OF-THE ART FEEDERS?
Damien says, I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE TIME...
Pat says, OH, DON'T WORRY.
IT'S JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE.
IT REALLY IS WORTH IT.
Inside the enclosure, Tommy and Audrey creep stealthily away from the wall.
[Rustling]
Audrey says, HELLO, HUAN!
WANNA PLAY WITH US?
Huan stands with his head against a wall.
Tommy says, AFTER EVERYTHING
THAT'S HAPPENED,
I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY
HUAN'S AFRAID OF EVERYONE.
Audrey says, HOLD ON! THERE IS SOMEONE
HE'S NOT AFRAID OF! JACK!
[Birds chirp]
Audrey shouts, JACK! JACK!

Jack swings down to the ground from a vine.
[Jack grunts]
Audrey says, JACK! WE COULD REALLY
USE YOUR HELP WITH HUAN!
Jack taps the ground behind Huan with a bamboo shoot. Huan turns and follows Jack.
[Jack and Huan grunt]
Audrey says, THAT'S PERFECT, JACK!
BRING HIM OVER THERE!
Jack backs through the door of the enclosure and leads Huan into the forest in the greenhouse.
Tommy says, GOOD JOB, HUAN, THAT'S GREAT!
DON'T BE SCARED!
[Laughing]
Standing in front of a bird feeder, Damien peers inside.
Damien says, I DON'T GET IT.
THESE FEEDERS LOOK ORDINARY.
Audrey’s mom says, THEY'RE VERY SOPHISTICATED,
LIKE OUR NIGHT-VISION CAMERAS.
Pat says, WE CAN WATCH ALL OUR ANIMALS,
DAY AND NIGHT. NONSTOP!
Damien’s eye twitches.
[Watch beeps]
Damien sweats.
Damien says, ENOUGH WASTING TIME!
I'VE GOT A PANDA THAT NEEDS
TO GO TO ANOTHER REFUGE!
Audrey’s mom says, HOLD ON! WOULD YOU LIKE
TO SEE THE CLINIC?
OR MAYBE HAVE SOME BAMBOO TEA?
Damien arrives at the open door of the panda enclosure.
[Damien gasps]
Damien asks, WHO LEFT THE GATE OPEN?
HUAN! HUAN! HE'S DISAPPEARED!
WE'VE GOT TO LOCK
THE PLACE DOWN!
CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT!
[Background laughter]
Audrey’s mom says, DON'T BE SCARED!
HUAN IS SAFE WITH
AUDREY AND TOMMY.
Damien says, WHAT?! HUAN! HUAN!
Damien runs toward the laughter.
[Children laugh, Damien gasps]
Damien says, THAT'S EN...
WHAT? BUT...
BUT THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
Jack and Huan sit in the bamboo grove and eat bamboo, and Tommy sits beside Jack. Audrey stands beside Huan, holding bamboo shoots.
[Gentle music plays]
Audrey says, HI, MOM!
Audrey’s mom says, MY DAUGHTER GREW UP
IN THE REFUGE SURROUNDED BY ANIMALS.
Pat says, THAT LITTLE GIRL NEVER
CEASES TO AMAZE US!
[Damien gasps]
Damien says, BUT HUAN'S NOT AFRAID OF YOU?
HOW DID YOU DO THAT?
I... I COULD NEVER FIND
THE ANSWER IN MY MANUAL.
[Munching, birds chirp]
Tommy says, YOU DON'T NEED A MANUAL
TO GET IT! YOU JUST NEED TO LISTEN
TO THE ANIMALS!
Huan falls backwards onto his back on the ground. Jack imitates him.
[Happy animal noises, thumping, laughter]
Damien says, HMM?
Audrey asks, YOU WANT TO TRY TO FEED HIM?
Audrey offers Damien a bamboo shoot.
Damien says, UH, UH... I DON'T KNOW
IF THAT'S A GOOD IDEA.
THE LAST TIME I TRIED,
IT DIDN'T REALLY WORK.
Audrey’s mom says, YOU JUST NEED TO BE
A LITTLE PATIENT
AND LET HIM BUILD UP
HIS CONFIDENCE.
[Damien gasps]
Damien’s hand trembles as he holds out a bamboo shoot. Huan rolls into a sitting position and takes the bamboo.
[Uplifting music plays, munching]
Damien says, I THINK A PHONE CALL
IS IN ORDER.
Audrey says, HUH?
Damien paces and holds his cell phone to his ear.
[Footsteps rustle]
Damien speaks into his cell phone, MM-HMM. YES.
YES. YES. YES!
Damien says, THERE... IT'S DONE!
[Beep]
Damien says, I'VE JUST INFORMED THE ZOO
THAT HUAN IS IN VERY GOOD
HANDS HERE.
YOU'RE ALLOWED TO KEEP HIM!
[Cheering, watch beeps, upbeat music plays]
Damien says, HMM?
IT'S TIME TO, UH...
IT'S... IT'S TIME TO GO.

Audrey stands as she slides down a rock past Karl and Pat. Karl, a slender young man with black hair, watches Audrey slide past. Audrey and Jack, still carrying Tommy, run past Jonas, a man with curly red hair. He lifts a rake over his head and spins as they pass.

The tall iron gates in front of the Shelter are open. Tommy rides his red bicycle through a puddle and then down the path towards the greenhouse. Audrey’s mom stands on a lift, rising behind a van. The lift is attached to a trailer connected to a yellow sports utility vehicle. The van has a picture of a panda on the side.
Tommy turns to look and loses control of his bicycle. He wobbles through puddles and stops centimetres from Audrey.
[Whirring, splashing, squeaking, exclamations]
Tommy says, HUH?
WHOA, WAH!
Audrey says, AH!
[Tommy laughs, birds chirp]
Tommy says, HELLO, AUDREY!
WHAT'S THE ZOO'S VAN
DOING HERE?
[Upbeat music plays]
Audrey says, HI! THE STORM FLOODED
THEIR PANDA'S ENCLOSURE,
SO, UNTIL THEY CAN COME UP WITH
A SOLUTION TO THEIR PROBLEM,
THEY'VE ENTRUSTED
THE GREATEST ZOOLOGIST
IN ALL THE AREA WITH IT!
Tommy says, HOLD ON, ARE YOU SAYING...
THEY GAVE IT TO YOUR MOM?!
Audrey’s mom taps on the back of the zoo van. She stands on the trailer beside a large object covered by a tarp. Audrey and Tommy run to the trailer.
[Audrey and Tommy laugh]
Audrey’s mom pulls the tarp off a crate and reveals the giant panda.
Audrey and Tommy say, WOW!
Tommy says, A REAL GIANT PANDA!
THAT'S AWESOME!
IT'S RARE TO COME ACROSS THEM,
UNLESS YOU TAKE
A TRIP TO CHINA!
Tommy moves towards the crate. A young man with short red hair and red freckles on his cheeks steps between Tommy and the crate. The man with the freckles holds a book under his left arm and raises his right hand.
[Whoosh, birds chirp]
The man with the freckles says, NO, NO, NO! YOU HAVE
TO KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE.
WE DON'T WANT TO SCARE HIM.
Audrey’s mom says, KIDS, I'D LIKE YOU
TO MEET DAMIEN.
HE'S THE INSPECTOR IN CHARGE
OF HUAN'S FILE.
HE'S HERE TO MAKE SURE
WE TAKE THE UTMOST CARE
OF THIS DEAR PANDA.
The man with the freckles, Damien, says, MM-HMM!
Audrey says, WELL, OF COURSE WE'LL TAKE
GOOD CARE OF HIM!
WE DO THAT WITH EVERY ANIMAL
HERE AT THE REFUGE.
Damien says, BUT PANDAS AREN'T LIKE
EVERY OTHER ANIMAL, LITTLE GIRL.
THEY'RE NATIONAL TREASURES.
I WILL THEREFORE INSIST
THAT YOU ENSURE THE SAFETY
OF HUAN BY FOLLOWING
THE PROTOCOL
TO... THE... LETTER!
Damien pats the cover of his book.
[Tapping]
Audrey and Tommy say, HMM? MM-HMM!
Audrey and Tommy look at each other and then salute Damien.
Audrey’s mom says, DON'T YOU WORRY,
DAMIEN. I'M QUITE SURE HUAN
WILL FEEL RIGHT AT HOME
IN OUR REFUGE IN NO TIME AT ALL!
[Damien chuckles]
Damien says, WELL, HE'D BETTER!
IF HE DOESN'T FIT IN,
WE'LL HAVE TO SEND HIM
TO ANOTHER REFUGE POST HASTE!
Audrey, Tommy, and Audrey’s mom say, UH...
[Audrey’s mom gulps]
Audrey’s mom says, PAT'S SETTING UP
HUAN'S ENCLOSURE.
LET'S GO TAKE A LOOK!
Pat and Karl put Huan’s crate on the ground by a fence.
[Panting, scraping, birds sing]
Damien says, RIGHT HERE'S GOOD.
Tommy says, WOW! THIS IS AN AWESOME AREA!
SOME OF THE OTHER ANIMALS
MIGHT BE JEALOUS.
Platforms built around trees have ropes dangling from them. One platform has a tire swing. A line of large rubber tires pokes out of the dirt. Colourful banners hang on poles.
Pat says, I TRIED TO MAKE THIS ENCLOSURE
IDENTICAL TO HIS OLD ONE,
TO MAKE HIM FEEL AT HOME.
[Damien gasps]
Damien says, IDENTICAL, YOU SAY?
I DON'T REMEMBER
THIS BEING THERE!
Damien pushes the tire swing.
[Swing squeaks]
Pat says, YES, IT'S NEW!
I FOUND THE SPACE
WAS MISSING FUN THINGS
AND COLOR, SO I DECIDED TO ADD
A FEW THINGS.
Damien says, MM-HMM. I SEE.
PLEASE REMOVE THEM.
THESE DISTRACTIONS
MIGHT UPSET HUAN.
AND FROM NOW ON,
I WOULD RECOMMEND
YOU FOLLOW THE PROTOCOL.
UNDERSTOOD?
Audrey’s mom elbows Pat’s side.
[Rustling]
Audrey’s mom says, ABSOLUTELY! UNDERSTOOD!
WE'LL DO EVERYTHING WE CAN
TO ADAPT THE REFUGE
TO HUAN'S NEEDS.
Audrey’s mom pats Pat’s shoulder.
[Chuckles nervously, patting]
Damien says, ANYWAY...
LET'S SEE HOW HUAN REACTS.
Damien lifts the grate on the front of the crate, and Huan cowers inside.
Audrey and Tommy say, WOW!
Huan turns and hides his face. Damien looks in his book.
[Huan squeals nervously, pages flip]
Audrey and Tommy say, HUH?
[Whimpering]
Damien says, THIS IS VERY BAD.
HE CLEARLY DOESN'T
FEEL SAFE ENOUGH IN YOUR
ENCLOSURE TO LEAVE HIS CRATE.
Audrey says gently, OH... HELLO, HUAN!
Damien waves a finger at Audrey.
Damien says, MMM, MMM, MMM!
Audrey says, HE JUST GOT HERE!
HE NEEDS TO SETTLE IN!
Damien says, YES, WELL, THAT'S THE PROBLEM.
WE DON'T HAVE TIME.
[Watch beeps]
Damien says, AH! MEAL TIME!
HIS FOOD! WHERE IS YOUR BAMBOO?
SHOW ME, PLEASE.
Audrey’s mom says, IT'S THIS WAY.
PAT WILL TAKE YOU.
[Audrey’s mom chuckles nervously, Pat grumbles]
Audrey’s mom says, KIDS, I'LL LET YOU
WATCH OVER HUAN.
BUT DON'T GET TOO CLOSE TO HIM.
I DON'T WANT TO UPSET
OUR FRIEND DAMIEN. UNDERSTOOD?
Audrey says, HMM?
Audrey and Tommy nod and say, MM-HMM.
Audrey’s mom walks away from the crate. Jack leaps into the enclosure and stops in front of Audrey and Tommy.
Audrey says, HELLO, JACK!
[Jack grunts]
Audrey says, THIS HERE IS HUAN!
AND HE'S A PANDA!
Audrey uses sign language and signs the word panda. Jack copies the sign.
[Jack grunts, Huan squeals nervously, gentle music plays]
Audrey says, AH!
Audrey gently rolls a blue ball to Huan. Huan sniffs the ball and rolls it away from the crate.
[Rustling, sniffing, small squeal]
Jack stops the ball and rolls it back to Huan.
[Jack grunts]
Tommy says, WOW! HE'S PLAYING! SO COOL!
[Audrey giggles, excited grunting]
In the greenhouse, a bird flies over a bamboo grove. Damien and Audrey’s mom follow Pat into the grove.
[Bird screeches, footsteps rustle, upbeat music plays]
Audrey’s mom says, OUR GARDENER, JONAS,
INSTALLED THIS BAMBOO GROVE
ESPECIALLY FOR HUAN.
OH, HELLO, JONAS!
UH, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Jonas plays a short bamboo shoot like a flute.
[Soft melody plays]
Jonas says, WELL, CAN'T YOU SEE?
I'M PLAYING MUSIC
TO HELP THE BAMBOO GROW!
Damien taps on a bamboo shoot. He licks it.
[Annoyed grumbling, tapping, he gasps, slurping]
Damien says, WAIT... AM I DREAMING, OR DOES
THIS BAMBOO COME FROM HUBEI?
I SPECIFICALLY SAID THE BAMBOO
MUST COME FROM SICHUAN.
Jonas says, YES, BUT APART
FROM BEING BETTER,
THIS VARIETY'S
ALSO MORE NUTRITIOUS.
AND PANDAS LOVE IT!
Damien gestures at his book.
Damien says, HUAN EATS BAMBOO FROM SICHUAN.
NINETY-NINE PERCENT
OF A PANDA'S REGULAR DIET
CONSISTS OF BAMBOO.
THIS CHANGE COULD UPSET
HIS DIGESTION!
Jonas says, NO CHANCE OF THAT!
I KNOW THIS VARIETY IS GREAT
FOR THE DIGESTION.
I MADE A TEA FOR MYSELF
OUT OF IT!
[Audrey’s mom chuckles nervously]
Damien says, ALRIGHT... I GUESS WE'LL JUST
HAVE TO DEAL WITH
WHAT WE'VE GOT.
Damien walks away from Jonas. Jonas gives Pat bamboo.
Jonas says, HEY, THAT YOUNG MAN
SEEMS A BIT ON EDGE.
SOME OF THAT TEA
MIGHT SORT HIM.
Huan stands at the edge of his crate and pushes the ball to Jack.
[Upbeat music plays, happy animal grunts]
Tommy says, YOU SEE, HUAN?
YOU'VE ALREADY MADE
A NEW FRIEND AT THE REFUGE!
[Laughing]
Damien says, HMM?
[Damien screams]
Damien asks, IS THAT HOW YOU WELCOME ANIMALS
TO YOUR REFUGE?
BY LETTING CHILDREN
AND GORILLAS TERRORIZE THEM?
SHAME! SHAME ON YOU!
Huan retreats further back into his crate.
[Grumbles]
Audrey’s mom says, I THOUGHT I MADE MYSELF CLEAR
THAT YOU CAN'T GET CLOSE TO HIM!
Audrey says, BUT, MOM, HUAN SEEMED
SO SAD AND LONELY.
[Gentle music plays]
Audrey’s mom says, IF HUAN DOESN'T
SETTLE IN AT THE REFUGE,
THEY'LL HAVE TO SEND HIM
TO ANOTHER ONE.
IF YOU WANT HIM
TO STAY WITH US,
WE MUST FOLLOW
DAMIEN'S INSTRUCTIONS!
IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?
Tommy and Audrey say, MM-HMM...
[Watch beeps]
Damien says, THAT'S ENOUGH!
MAY I POINT OUT, HUAN STILL
HASN'T EATEN ANYTHING TODAY?!
WE'RE ALREADY BEHIND SCHEDULE!
Damien taps his book. Pat carries bamboo towards the crate.
[Tapping, Pat grumbles]
Pat puts the bamboo on the grass by the crate.
[Huan sniffs, upbeat music plays]
Huan walks out of his crate and sits down. Damien’s eye twitches.
Damien says, PANDAS HAVE BAD EYESIGHT.
YOU SHOULD BRING
THE BAMBOO CLOSER.
Damien picks up a piece of bamboo and walks towards Huan.
Tommy says, UH, EXCUSE ME, SIR,
BUT I DON'T THINK THAT'S
A VERY GOOD IDEA.
Audrey’s mom says, HERE, WE DON'T FORCE
THE ANIMALS TO DO ANYTHING
THEY DON'T WANT. WE LET THEM
DEVELOP THEIR OWN RHYTHM.
Damien waves the bamboo in front of Huan’s face. Huan knocks the food out of Damien’s hand and turns away.
[Roaring, Damien whimpers]
Damien says, THERE, YOU SEE! I TOLD YOU!
HUAN DOES NOT LIKE
THIS KIND OF BAMBOO.
I'M GOING TO HAVE TO BRING SOME
FOOD FROM THE ZOO
IF HE DOESN'T EAT IT.
Audrey says, UGH, IS HE SERIOUS?
THE BAMBOO ISN'T THE PROBLEM.
[Watch beeps]
Damien says, AH! IT'S TIME
FOR HIS EXERCISES!
PANDAS IN CAPTIVITY
NEED TO WORK OUT.
YOU CAN GET HIM TO WALK AROUND
THE ENCLOSURE
BY USING THIS APPLE.
TWELVE TIMES AROUND IS ENOUGH.
Huan scratches the ground. Damien holds a stick with an apple dangling from a string.
Damien says, CATCH THE APPLE, HUAN.
COME ON, TRY AND CATCH IT!
Audrey whispers, DOESN'T HE SEE THAT ALL THIS
DOES IS STRESS OUT HUAN?
Damien says, ARE YOU TRYING
TO MAKE ME LOOK BAD?
Damien hits Huan’s ear with the apple. Huan claws the ground.
[Huan grumbles, tapping, scratching, growling]
Damien says, GET IT! COME ON!
Huan knocks the apple off the string.
[Dramatic music plays, Huan roars, Damien whimpers, everyone gasps]
Huan knocks over his crate. He scratches an enclosure wall.
[Huan roars, crashing, scratching]
Audrey’s mom says, THAT'S ENOUGH!
EVERYBODY OUT!
HUAN NEEDS HIS SPACE!
Audrey’s mom holds a door open.
[Creak]
Jack and the humans leave the enclosure.
Damien says, I'VE NEVER SEEN HUAN
IN SUCH A STATE!
OBVIOUSLY, HE DOESN'T LIKE
THIS REFUGE.
WE'LL HAVE TO SEND HIM
SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Audrey says, WHAT? WE CAN'T JUST GIVE UP
LIKE THAT!
HE JUST NEEDS A LITTLE TIME
TO GET USED TO US.
Audrey’s mom shuts the enclosure door.
[Creak, click, gentle music plays]
Audrey’s mom says, I AGREE WITH MY DAUGHTER,
DAMIEN. DON'T YOU THINK IT'S A BIT
EARLY TO JUST GIVE UP?
Damien says, UH, UH... NO, I DON'T!
YOU'VE GONE AGAINST
THE PROTOCOL FROM THE START!
PUT HIM BACK IN THE CRATE!
I'M GOING TO CALL THE ZOO.
Audrey says, HUH? MOM!
WE CAN'T GIVE UP JUST YET.
I'M SURE HUAN WILL LIKE
IT AT THE REFUGE!
Damien paces and holds his cell phone to his ear.
Damien speaks into the cell phone, MM-HMM! YES. YES.
Audrey’s mom says, I KNOW,
WE ALL AGREE WITH YOU.
THAT'S WHY PAT AND I
WILL DISTRACT DAMIEN
WHILE YOU TWO WORK ON
LIFTING HUAN'S MORALE.
Tommy says, WE'RE ON IT!
[Audrey giggles]
Audrey and Tommy run into the enclosure.
[Door creaks]
Damien says, YES. GOODBYE!
[Cellphone beeps]
Damien says, I'VE CALLED FOR THE VAN.
IT'LL BE HERE SOON.
Audrey’s mom says, WHILE WE'RE WAITING,
WHY DON'T WE HAVE A LOOK AT OUR
STATE-OF-THE ART FEEDERS?
Damien says, I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE TIME...
Pat says, OH, DON'T WORRY.
IT'S JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE.
IT REALLY IS WORTH IT.
Inside the enclosure, Tommy and Audrey creep stealthily away from the wall.
[Rustling]
Audrey says, HELLO, HUAN!
WANNA PLAY WITH US?
Huan stands with his head against a wall.
Tommy says, AFTER EVERYTHING
THAT'S HAPPENED,
I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY
HUAN'S AFRAID OF EVERYONE.
Audrey says, HOLD ON! THERE IS SOMEONE
HE'S NOT AFRAID OF! JACK!
[Birds chirp]
Audrey shouts, JACK! JACK!
YES! COME HERE!
Jack swings down to the ground from a vine.
[Jack grunts]
Audrey says, JACK! WE COULD REALLY
USE YOUR HELP WITH HUAN!
Jack taps the ground behind Huan with a bamboo shoot. Huan turns and follows Jack.
[Jack and Huan grunt]
Audrey says, THAT'S PERFECT, JACK!
BRING HIM OVER THERE!
Jack backs through the door of the enclosure and leads Huan into the forest in the greenhouse.
Tommy says, GOOD JOB, HUAN, THAT'S GREAT!
DON'T BE SCARED!
[Laughing]
Standing in front of a bird feeder, Damien peers inside.
Damien says, I DON'T GET IT.
THESE FEEDERS LOOK ORDINARY.
Audrey’s mom says, THEY'RE VERY SOPHISTICATED,
LIKE OUR NIGHT-VISION CAMERAS.
Pat says, WE CAN WATCH ALL OUR ANIMALS,
DAY AND NIGHT. NONSTOP!
Damien’s eye twitches.
[Watch beeps]
Damien sweats.
Damien says, ENOUGH WASTING TIME!
I'VE GOT A PANDA THAT NEEDS
TO GO TO ANOTHER REFUGE!
Audrey’s mom says, HOLD ON! WOULD YOU LIKE
TO SEE THE CLINIC?
OR MAYBE HAVE SOME BAMBOO TEA?
Damien arrives at the open door of the panda enclosure.
[Damien gasps]
Damien asks, WHO LEFT THE GATE OPEN?
HUAN! HUAN! HE'S DISAPPEARED!
WE'VE GOT TO LOCK
THE PLACE DOWN!
CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT!
[Background laughter]
Audrey’s mom says, DON'T BE SCARED!
HUAN IS SAFE WITH
AUDREY AND TOMMY.
Damien says, WHAT?! HUAN! HUAN!
Damien runs toward the laughter.
[Children laugh, Damien gasps]
Damien says, THAT'S EN...
WHAT? BUT...
BUT THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
Jack and Huan sit in the bamboo grove and eat bamboo, and Tommy sits beside Jack. Audrey stands beside Huan, holding bamboo shoots.
[Gentle music plays]
Audrey says, HI, MOM!
Audrey’s mom says, MY DAUGHTER GREW UP
IN THE REFUGE SURROUNDED BY ANIMALS.
Pat says, THAT LITTLE GIRL NEVER
CEASES TO AMAZE US!
[Damien gasps]
Damien says, BUT HUAN'S NOT AFRAID OF YOU?
HOW DID YOU DO THAT?
I... I COULD NEVER FIND
THE ANSWER IN MY MANUAL.
[Munching, birds chirp]
Tommy says, YOU DON'T NEED A MANUAL
TO GET IT! YOU JUST NEED TO LISTEN
TO THE ANIMALS!
Huan falls backwards onto his back on the ground. Jack imitates him.
[Happy animal noises, thumping, laughter]
Damien says, HMM?
Audrey asks, YOU WANT TO TRY TO FEED HIM?
Audrey offers Damien a bamboo shoot.
Damien says, UH, UH... I DON'T KNOW
IF THAT'S A GOOD IDEA.
THE LAST TIME I TRIED,
IT DIDN'T REALLY WORK.
Audrey’s mom says, YOU JUST NEED TO BE
A LITTLE PATIENT
AND LET HIM BUILD UP
HIS CONFIDENCE.
[Damien gasps]
Damien’s hand trembles as he holds out a bamboo shoot. Huan rolls into a sitting position and takes the bamboo.
[Uplifting music plays, munching]
Damien says, I THINK A PHONE CALL
IS IN ORDER.
Audrey says, HUH?
Damien paces and holds his cell phone to his ear.
[Footsteps rustle]
Damien speaks into his cell phone, MM-HMM. YES.
YES. YES. YES!
Damien says, THERE... IT'S DONE!
[Beep]
Damien says, I'VE JUST INFORMED THE ZOO
THAT HUAN IS IN VERY GOOD
HANDS HERE.
YOU'RE ALLOWED TO KEEP HIM!
[Cheering, watch beeps, upbeat music plays]
Damien says, HMM?
IT'S TIME TO, UH...
IT'S... IT'S TIME TO GO.
SONIA, WILL YOU ACCOMPANY ME?
Audrey’s mom, who is Sonia, says, OF COURSE! KIDS,
CAN YOU BRING HUAN
BACK TO HIS ENCLOSURE?
Damien says, IT'S OKAY, YOU DON'T HAVE TO.
I KNOW HE'S SAFE
HERE IN THE REFUGE.
Pat gives Tommy and Audrey two thumbs up.
[Pat chuckles]
Audrey says, I WAS SURE HE WAS GOING
TO TAKE HUAN AWAY!

Tommy says, UH-OH, UH...
Audrey says, HMM?
Huan eats Damien’s book.
