[Upbeat music plays, birds chirping, bicycle rattling]
The tall iron gates in front of the Shelter are open. Tommy rides his bicycle down the path, past Sonia, who speaks to a woman with short brown hair.
Sonia says, OF COURSE, YOU'RE WELCOME HERE AT THE SHELTER. IT'S ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO HELP A FELLOW RESEARCHER!
The brown-haired woman says, MM-HMM!
Sonia says, WE HAVE A MULTITUDE OF SPECIES HERE.
[Rustling, upbeat music plays, paint squelching]
Tommy takes off his helmet and runs inside the greenhouse. Inside, Karl paints on a rock.
Karl says, AND NOW FOR THE FINAL TOUCH.
[Whooshing, birds calling]
Audrey and Jack pop up from behind the rock. Karl jumps away from the rock and splashes blue paint across his art.
Audrey says, HELLO, KARL! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
[Jack vocalizing]
Karl says, UH, A ROCK PAINTING.
Audrey says, WOW! YOU'RE REALLY GOOD! IT'S SO PRETTY! CAN WE TRY TO DO ONE TOO?
Karl says, OF COURSE! FIND A ROCK AND HAVE FUN!
Audrey says, OH! LOOK! THERE'S A ROCK OVER THERE THAT LOOKS JUST PERFECT. COME ON, JACK!
[Jack vocalizing, footsteps thumping]
Karl says, AW, I WAS ALMOST FINISHED...
[Squelching, upbeat music plays]
Nearby, Audrey sits in front of a flat rock. She takes a paintbrush out of a paint can.
Audrey says, FIRST, WE DIP THE BRUSH IN THE PAINT.
[Confused grunting, paint squelching, Audrey laughing]
Jack picks up a rock and dips it into a can of paint.
Audrey says, YOU ALMOST HAVE IT, JACK! BUT LOOK, IT'S MUCH EASIER WITH A BRUSH LIKE THIS.
[Paint squelching, Jack vocalizing]
Audrey paints on her rock. Jack picks up a paintbrush and paints on a different rock. Jack excitedly splashes paint at Karl, who dodges it.
Karl says, AH, AH! PHEW...
[Splashing, Jack vocalizing, whooshing, splattering]
Paint lands on Karl’s face and head.
Tommy says, AUDREY!
Audrey says, HELLO, TOMMY! WOULD YOU LIKE TO PAINT WITH US?
[Jack vocalizing, whooshing]
Tommy says, YES, BUT LATER. THERE'S A SCIENTIST AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE SHELTER WITH YOUR MOM. DO YOU KNOW WHO IT IS?
Audrey says, NOT A CLUE! WE SHOULD GO AND MEET HER. SEE YOU LATER, JACK! SEE YOU LATER, KARL!
[Jack vocalizing]
Jack waves.
Karl says, AH, AH!
Karl hides behind his rock painting.
[Jack vocalizing, whooshing, splattering]
Karl says, HMM...
In front of the greenhouse, Sonia stands with the brown-haired woman.
[Birds chirping, cheerful music plays]
Sonia says, YOU’LL SEE. WE TAKE CARE OF MANY FASCINATING SPECIES.
[Footsteps crunching]
Audrey and Tommy approach the two women.
Audrey says, HELLO!
Sonia says, CHLOE, THIS IS MY DAUGHTER, AUDREY. AND HER FRIEND, TOMMY! KIDS, I'D LIKE YOU TO MEET CHLOE, A HERPETOLOGIST.
Audrey says, HERPETOLOGIST? HUH?
Tommy says, A HERPETOLOGIST IS A SCIENTIST WHO SPECIALIZES IN REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS!
[Cheerful music plays]
The brown-haired woman, Chloe, says, EXACTLY. I'VE HEARD THAT YOUR REFUGE SHELTERS PLOUGHSHARE TORTOISES. I'VE STUDIED THEM, AND I'D LOVE TO OBSERVE HER.
Audrey says, OH! THAT'S TAL! WE SAVED HER FROM AN OWNER WHO KEPT HER LIKE A DOMESTIC ANIMAL. I'LL BRING YOU TO HER! LET'S GO!
[Footsteps crunching]
Audrey grabs Chloe’s hand and leads her towards the greenhouse entrance.
Chloe says, OH!
Sonia says, OKAY, YOU CAN BRING HER THERE IF YOU WANT. BUT DON'T BOTHER CHLOE WHILE SHE'S WORKING!
[Birds chirping]
Tommy says, PROMISE, SONIA! SHE WON'T EVEN KNOW THAT WE'RE THERE!
[Snoring, footsteps crunching, birds singing, bright music plays]
In the greenhouse, Sophie, a sloth, hangs asleep from a branch.
Tommy asks, UH, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A GIANT SALAMANDER? WHAT'S A CHAMELEON'S REAL COLOR? AND, UH, IS IT TRUE LIZARDS CAN GROW ANOTHER TAIL IF THEIRS IS CUT OFF?
Chloe says, MY WORD. YOU'RE FULL OF QUESTIONS. DON'T YOU EVER STOP?
Chloe walks ahead of Tommy and Audrey.
Audrey and Tommy say, HMM?
[Confused grunting]
[Footsteps crunching, water gurgling]
By a river, Tal the tortoise slowly walks on the grass. Audrey, Tommy, and Chloe arrive.
Audrey says, AH! THERE SHE IS! HELLO, TAL! ARE YOU HUNGRY?
[Birds chirping, rustling, Tal vocalizing]
Audrey picks up the long grass and holds it out to Tal. Chloe opens a notebook and looks at Tal with big eyes.
Chloe says, HMM. HMM! FINALLY, THERE SHE IS. SHE'S REALLY A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE TURTLE!
Tommy says, HEY!
Chloe says, HMM?
Tommy says, APPARENTLY, ALL PLOUGHSHARE TORTOISES LIVE WITHIN A 15-KILOMETER RADIUS IN MADAGASCAR. THAT TRUE? AND SUPPOSEDLY, THEY DON'T HAVE ANY TEETH. ALSO... HMM!
[Footsteps crunching, Tal vocalizing]
Chloe walks away from Tommy and stands over Audrey and Tal.
Chloe says, I DON'T BELIEVE IT. SHE'S EATING OUT OF YOUR HAND?!
Audrey says, YEAH. SHE'S NOT SHY AT ALL! WOULD LIKE TO TRY?
[Chloe grunting, shell clattering]
Chloe offers Tal grass, and Tal retreats into her shell.
Audrey says, OH! THAT'S WEIRD, SHE'S NOT USUALLY LIKE THAT.
[Smacking, birds chirping, rustling]
Chloe shoves Audrey away from Tal. She takes out her notebook and kneels by Tal.
Chloe says, THANKS FOR SHOWING ME WHERE SHE IS. I'D BETTER GET TO WORK NOW.
Audrey says, DID YOU SEE? THAT'S NOT NORMAL. IT LOOKS LIKE TAL'S AFRAID OF HER!
[Rustling, sniffing, gentle music plays]
Chloe sniffs the grass.
Tommy says, YEAH, BUT THINK ABOUT IT, TAL'S NEVER SEEN HER BEFORE. IT MAKES SENSE FOR HER TO BE A BIT LEERY AROUND HER.
Audrey says, HMM... YEAH, YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT.
Chloe picks up Tal’s shell and turns it. She peers inside.
Chloe says, HMM?
Audrey says, SHE'S ACTING REALLY WEIRD, THOUGH. THERE'S SOMETHING NOT RIGHT ABOUT CHLOE.
Tommy says, OH YEAH? DO YOU THINK SHE'S HIDING SOMETHING?
Audrey says, THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY FOR US TO FIND OUT.
Audrey approaches Chloe.
Audrey says, TOMMY WANTS TO SHOW YOU THE REPTILE VIVARIUM. BUT HE'S TOO SCARED TO ASK YOU.
[Thumping, water continues gurgling, birds calling]
Audrey puts her arm around Tommy’s shoulders.
Tommy says, HUH?! WHAT'RE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
Audrey says, HMM?
[Nervous chuckling]
Tommy says, OOH! OH YES, THAT'S TRUE!
Audrey and Tommy say, PRETTY PLEASE!
[Chloe sighing]
Chloe says, OH, ALL RIGHT. BUT I'VE GOT TO GET BACK TO WORK AFTER!
Audrey and Tommy say, MM-HMM!
[Photograph fluttering, Chloe gasping, insects chittering, birds calling, gentle music plays]
A photograph falls out of Chloe’s notebook, and she quickly picks it up.
Chloe says, LET'S GO.
[Footsteps crunching, plinking]
Chloe follows Audrey and Tommy. Behind them, Tal pokes her head out of her shell.
[Water splashing, birds calling]
In the Vivarium, Audrey says, WELL? WHAT DO YOU THINK?
[Croaking, chittering]
Chloe says, IT’S REALLY GREAT. A VERY NICE LIZARD COLLECTION.
Tommy says, YES! LOOK OVER THERE, THERE'S EVEN A BABY KOMODO DRAGON!
Chloe looks at an iguana on a branch in a tank.
Chloe says, AH YES, HERE IT IS. MAGNIFICENT. A VERY INTERESTING SPECIMEN. I'LL HAVE TO STUDY IT NEXT TIME!
Tommy says, UH, OKAY, BUT THAT'S AN IGUANA.
Chloe says, HMM?
Tommy says, THE KOMODO DRAGON'S OVER THERE.
[Komodo dragon grunting]
Chloe says, UH, OF COURSE IT IS! I KNEW THAT! I JUST WANTED TO SEE.
Tommy asks, WANTED TO SEE WHAT?
Audrey says, HMM...
Audrey stands with her arms crossed and an eyebrow arched. Tommy shrugs at her.
[Confused grunting, cheerful music plays, croaking, chittering]
Tommy says, COME AND SEE THE DENDROBATES! BEAUTIFUL, AREN'T THEY? I BET YOU KNOW LOTS ABOUT THEM!
Chloe says, UH.
[Clearing throat]
Chloe says, YES, DENDROBATES. LET'S SEE NOW. TO START WITH, THEY ARE VERY COLORFUL. THEY REALLY ARE BEAUTIFUL. THIS IS HOW THEY RECOGNIZE EACH OTHER.
Tommy asks, ARE YOU SURE? AREN'T THEY ALSO INCREDIBLY VENOMOUS?
Chloe says, AH! VENOMOUS?!
[Gasping, bucket clattering, iguana vocalizing]
Chloe jumps back from the Dendrobates and trips over a bucket. The iguana walks up a branch in the tank behind her, and Chloe startles.
Chloe says, AH!
Chloe hides behind a post.
[Chloe sighing]
Audrey says, HA! NOW I'M SURE OF IT! CHLOE ISN'T A REAL HERPO... HERPO-TOLO... HERPO... POTAMUS? A REAL REPTILE EXPERT!
[Croaking continues]
Tommy says, HMM. FOR SURE! EVERYONE KNOWS THAT DENDROBATES ARE VENOMOUS. AT LEAST, ALMOST EVERYONE!
Audrey says, WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHY SHE REALLY CAME TO THE REFUGE.
Chloe steps away from the post, and Tommy and Audrey block her way.
Audrey says, OH! LEAVING ALREADY?
Chloe says, YES, I HAVE STUFF TO DO. BUT DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME.
[Chuckling nervously]
Chloe says, YOU CAN STAY HERE!
[Footsteps pattering]
Chloe walks away from the children.
Audrey and Tommy say, HMM...
[Door squeaking]
Chloe opens a door and leaves the Vivarium. Tommy and Audrey chase her.
Tommy shouts, HUH? WAIT! UH... YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND! WE'LL COME WITH YOU!
[Birds calling, whooshing, Paco grunting, footsteps crunching]
Paco, the kakapo, catches a worm and eats it.
Chloe says, THANK YOU FOR WALKING ME HERE. I CAN TAKE CARE OF THINGS BY MYSELF NOW.
[Popping, water gurgling]
Chloe, Tommy, and Audrey arrive back at the river. Tal hides in her shell.
Chloe says, HELLO, TAL? YOU HIDING? WHY DON'T YOU WANT TO COME OUT?
[Whooshing, photograph fluttering, rustling]
Chloe takes out her notebook. The photograph slides out and lands by Tommy and Audrey.
Tommy and Chloe say, OH!
[Rustling, gasping, whooshing, birds calling]
Tommy picks the photograph up. The photograph shows Tal.
Audrey says, HEY, THAT'S TAL!
Tommy says, I THINK CHLOE'S HER FORMER OWNER! THAT'S WHY TAL WAS SO SCARED OF HER.
Audrey says, WE'VE GOT TO SHOW THIS TO MY MOM.
[Tense music plays]
Audrey grabs Tommy’s arm and pulls him away from Chloe and Tal. Chloe looks over her shoulder with narrowed eyes.
[Audrey panting, bushes rustling]
Audrey and Tommy run on a path. Chloe blocks their way.
Audrey and Tommy say, AH!
Chloe says, GIVE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW!
Tommy says, UH...
Audrey shouts, RUN, TOMMY!
[Dramatic music plays]
Audrey runs, and Tommy follows her, carrying the photograph.
Tommy says, HUH?
[Panting, footsteps crunching]
Chloe chases Tommy and Audrey.
Chloe shouts, COME BACK, YOU LITTLE MONSTERS!
Audrey says, DON'T WORRY, I'VE GOT AN ESCAPE PLAN!
[Shouting, whooshing, water splashing]
Audrey grabs Tommy’s arm. She grabs a vine and swings over muddy water. Chloe runs to the shore and falls in.
Chloe says, AHH! UGH! DISGUSTING! HMM?
[Alto croaking, splashing, Chloe grunting]
Chloe sits up with a lily pad and Alto, a frog, on her head. He jumps into the water and splashes Chloe with mud.
[Children shouting, panting, rustling, exciting music plays]
Audrey and Tommy swing off the vine and run up a hill. In her house, Sonia works on a computer in her office.
[Bright music plays, typing, clicking]
Tommy and Audrey run into the office.
Audrey shouts, CHLOE'S NOT A REAL SCIENTIST!
[Whooshing, Sonia gasping]
Sonia says, UH, WHAT?! COME ON, AUDREY! WHAT'RE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
Audrey says, LOOK! WE HAVE PROOF!
[Rustling]
Audrey holds up the photograph.
Sonia says, HMM? PROOF OF WHAT? THAT'S A NICE PICTURE OF A TORTOISE.
Chloe says, INDEED IT IS!
[Splashing, footsteps pattering]
Chloe stands in the doorway, dripping mud on the floor.
Sonia and Audrey say, HUH?
Chloe says, AND YOUR DAUGHTER STOLE IT FROM ME!
[Chair creaking]
Sonia stands up.
Sonia says, CHLOE, YOU'RE COVERED IN MUD. COME ON, I'LL GET YOU A TOWEL!
Chloe says, FOR YOUR INFORMATION, THAT IS A PHOTO OF ANOTHER PLOUGHSHARE TORTOISE! IT'S OBVIOUS!
Chloe takes the photograph from Audrey.
Audrey says, HMM?
[Angry grumbling]
Audrey says, MOM, WAIT! SHE'S BEEN LYING TO US ALL ALONG!
Sonia says, THAT'S ENOUGH, AUDREY! CHLOE IS OUR GUEST! LOOK AT HER! SHE'S COVERED IN MUD FROM HEAD TO TOE. I'LL SPEAK TO YOU LATER.
[Audrey gasping]
Audrey says, BUT MOM!
Sonia says, LATER, AUDREY!
Chloe follows Sonia out of the room. Audrey watches them leave with furrowed eyebrows.
[Angry grumbling]
Later, Audrey paces in the greenhouse.
[Footsteps crunching, birds chirping, light music plays]
Audrey says, WE'VE GOT TO MAKE SURE TAL IS SAFE! WHAT IF WE HIDE HER SOMEWHERE?
Tommy says, THAT'S NOT GONNA WORK, AUDREY! CHLOE'LL TELL YOUR MOM IF SHE CAN'T FIND TAL.
[Jack vocalizing, Audrey and Tommy shouting]
Jack appears and holds out a painted rock.
Tommy says, HMM?
[Gentle music plays]
Audrey says, GOOD JOB, JACK, THAT'S REALLY NICE. BUT I DON'T FEEL LIKE PAINTING RIGHT NOW.
Tommy says, WOW, LOOK AT THOSE COLORS! IT LOOKS A LOT LIKE ONE OF THOSE DENDROBATES.
[Vine creaking]
Audrey says, OH! GREAT IDEA! COME ON, GUYS! WE'RE GOING TO PAINT!
Audrey runs away. Jack and Tommy look at each other. Tommy shrugs.
[Confused grunting, footsteps crunching]
Elsewhere in the greenhouse, Sonia and Chloe walk to the river.
Sonia says, PLEASE EXCUSE THE CHILDREN'S BEHAVIOR. THEIR LOVE OF ANIMALS REALLY GOES TO THEIR HEAD!
[Water gurgling, upbeat music plays]
Chloe says, OF COURSE, I UNDERSTAND. I CAN MANAGE FROM HERE ON.
Sonia says, OH, OKAY. IF YOU NEED ANYTHING, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO LET ME KNOW.
Chloe nods and says, MM-HMM.
[Nervous chuckling, water gurgling]
Chloe says, TAL? TAL, MY SWEET GIRL! IT'S MOMMY! WHERE'RE YOU HIDING?
Audrey says, COME ON, TAL!
Chloe says, HMM?
[Leaves rustling]
Chloe peers through a bush. In a clearing, Audrey kneels by a bush. She stands up.
Tommy says, IT'S PERFECT! CHLOE'LL NEVER FIND HER HERE!
Chloe says, HMM? OH!
[Whooshing, leaves rustling, Tommy chuckling]
Chloe ducks behind the bush. Audrey and Tommy glance towards her and then run out of the clearing. Chloe leaves the clearing and picks up an animal carrier from beneath the bush.
Chloe says, ALONE AT LAST! COME ON, TAL! LET'S GO BACK HOME!
[Animals calling, footsteps pattering, clicking, water splashing, soft music plays]
Chloe leaves the greenhouse, carrying the pet carrier. At the Veterinary clinic, Sonia stops watering flowers.
Sonia says, OH! HEY, CHLOÉ, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
[Birds chirping]
Chloe says, TAL IS MINE, I'M TAKING HER HOME! DO NOT TRY TO GET IN MY WAY!
[Clanking]
Sonia puts down her watering can.
Audrey says, EVERYTHING'S OKAY, MOM!
[Whooshing]
Sonia points at Chloe.
Sonia says, SHE’S TAKING TAL! QUICK! WE HAVE TO STOP HER!
[Whooshing, happy music plays]
Audrey takes Tal out from behind her back.
Audrey says, DON'T WORRY, MOM! I'VE GOT TAL RIGHT HERE!
Chloe says, HUH, WHAT?
[Rattling]
Chloe opens the pet carrier and takes out a painted rock.
Chloe says, IT’S JUST A PAINTED ROCK?!
[Birds chirping]
Tommy says, I’M PROUD OF THE RESULT! LOOKS JUST LIKE THE REAL THING!
Chloe says, GIVE HER BACK! TAL IS MY TURTLE, YOU HEAR ME? OW, OW!
[Whooshing, rock clattering, carrier rattling, thumping, whooshing, Audrey and Tommy laughing]
Chloe throws the painted rock to the ground and hits her foot. She grabs her foot and hops around the driveway.
Chloe says, HEY, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! I'M THE ONE WHO TOOK CARE OF HER FOR ALL THOSE YEARS! AND OVERNIGHT, THEY CAME AND TOOK HER FROM ME!
[Tense music plays, birds chirping]
Sonia says, THAT'S NORMAL PRACTICE! TAL IS NOT A DOMESTIC ANIMAL. THE REAL PROBLEM IS, YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE BOUGHT HER!
[Tal squeaking, Audrey giggling]
Tal pokes her head out of her shell.
Chloe says, BUT I LOVE HER SO MUCH, AND SHE LOVES ME TOO! AND…
[Chloe gasping, gentle music plays, birds chirping, Tal croaking]
Chloe asks, HOW DID YOU GET HER TO COME OUT OF HER SHELL?
Audrey says, IT’S USELESS TRYING TO FORCE HER. IF SHE POKES HER HEAD, OUT IT'S BECAUSE SHE FEELS COMFORTABLE HERE.
[Footsteps crunching, nervous squeaking]
Chloe approaches Tal, and Tal pulls her head into her shell.
Everyone says, HUH?
Chloe says, OH... OH, ALRIGHT. MAYBE SHE IS HAPPIER HERE.
Audrey says, IF YOU PROMISE TO LEAVE HER ALONE, MAYBE YOU CAN COME AND VISIT ONE OF THESE DAYS.
Chloe says, HMM.
In the greenhouse, Audrey puts Tal by the river.
[Water splashing, birds calling, gentle music plays]
Audrey says, THERE YOU GO, TAL! THERE'S NOTHING TO FEAR NOW. HAVE FUN!
Sonia says, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, AUDREY. YOU TOO, TOMMY! YOU WERE RIGHT!
[Tommy giggling]
Sonia says, I'M SORRY I DIDN'T BELIEVE YOU EARLIER.
[Upbeat music plays, water splashing]
Audrey says, IT’S NO BIG DEAL, MOM. WHAT MATTERS IS THAT TAL IS HERE, SAFE AND SOUND!
Tommy says, HEY, SONIA! DO YOU THINK WE COULD PAINT SOME MORE ROCKS? I WANT TO PAINT ANOTHER TORTOISE SHELL.
[Paint squelching]
Karl stands covered with blue paint.
Karl says, UH, SORRY, BUT I DON'T THINK THERE'S ANY PAINT LEFT.
[Jack vocalizing, Karl grumbling, Sonia and the children laughing]
Jack paints Karl.
[Upbeat music plays]
