Sonia says, MM-HMM. MM...
[Sonia laughing]
Audrey says, NOT WORSE THAN DAD'S FEET, THOUGH, RIGHT?
Hector says, HEY! HMPH.
[Laughing]
Sonia says, OH, NO, THEY AREN'T THAT BAD. MM-HMM.
Hector says, THAT'S ENOUGH. YOUR MOM NEEDS TO REST. SHE'LL TELL YOU EVERYTHING IN THE MORNING.
Audrey says, BUT I HAVEN'T SEEN HER IN SO LONG!
Sonia says, YOUR DAD'S RIGHT, AUDREY. AH, I'M SO TIRED. BUT HOW WOULD YOU FEEL ABOUT SPENDING THE WHOLE DAY TOGETHER TOMORROW, JUST YOU AND ME?
Audrey says, DO YOU MEAN A MOTHER-DAUGHTER DAY?! ALRIGHT! YEAH!
[Laughing, wings flapping]
The crescent moon sets, and the sun rises. In the morning, Audrey sits on her bed and stares at her frog-shaped alarm clock.
[Crickets chirping, birds singing, alarm ringing]
Audrey says, AH!
[Clicking, alarm stops]
Audrey shuts off her alarm and jumps out of bed.
Audrey says, YES, HERE WE GO! IT'S TIME FOR MY SPECIAL DAY WITH MOM TO START!

[Doorbell ringing]
Audrey says, DON'T MOVE, I'LL GET IT! COMING!
[Exclaiming, clattering, squeaking]

[Door clicking]
Tommy holds a book about frogs in front of his face.
Tommy says, LOOK, AUDREY, I FOUND A BIG BOOK ABOUT AMPHIBIANS, SPECIFICALLY ABOUT FROGS!
Audrey says, UH, TOMMY—
Tommy says, THIS ONE HERE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE ALTO!
Audrey says, THAT'S GREAT, TOMMY, BUT I ALREADY HAVE MY WHOLE DAY PLANNED.
Tommy says, DID YOU KNOW FROGS FROM LATIN AMERICA WERE BROUGHT TO AUSTRALIA TO HELP WITH BEETLES—
[Rustling]
Audrey holds up a notebook]
Audrey says, TOMMY, I DON'T HAVE TIME TODAY! I'M SPENDING THE WHOLE DAY WITH MY MOM. AND I EVEN MADE US A SCHEDULE: BOWLING, ICE CREAM, A MOVIE, THEN ROLLER SKATING!
Tommy says, WOW. ARE YOU TWO GOING TO HAVE TIME TO DO ALL THOSE THINGS IN ONE DAY?
Audrey says, OF COURSE! BUT YOU CAN GO SEE ALTO WITHOUT ME IF YOU WANT. SEE YOU LATER!
[Scraping, door slamming, typing]
Audrey pushes Tommy outside and slams the door. She runs to an office.
Audrey says, HI, MOM! ARE YOU READY FOR THE VERY BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE?
[Wheels rumbling]
Sonia pushes her wheeled chair back from a desk.
Sonia says, I SURE AM. WHAT ARE WE DOING FIRST?
Audrey says, HERE'S A HINT: I'M KNOCKING PINS DOWN!
Sonia says DO YOU KNOW I WAS THE REGIONAL CHAMPION WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE?
[Phone ringing]
Both say, HMM?
Sonia says, JUST A SECOND. IT COULD BE URGENT.
Audrey says, MM-MM.
[Indistinct chattering on the phone]
Sonia says, WHAT DO YOU MEAN, THEY NEED IT NOW?
[Indistinct chattering on the phone]
Sonia says, UGH. FINE.
[Indistinct chattering on the phone]
Sonia says, ALRIGHT, I'LL DO IT.
[Beeping]
Sonia ends the call and walks to Audrey.
Sonia says, I JUST HAVE TO SEND A QUICK EMAIL TO TASMANIA. IT WON'T TAKE LONG, I PROMISE.
[Whooshing, birds chirping]
Sonia and Audrey link pinky fingers.
Audrey says, NO WORRIES, MOM. I'LL BE AT THE GREENHOUSE. BUT DON'T TAKE TOO LONG, OKAY? MM-HMM.
[Upbeat music plays, rustling, pins clattering]
In the greenhouse, Audrey knocks boots over with a bowling ball.
Audrey cheers, AH...! YEAH!
[Jack vocalizing]
Sonia leans against a doorframe.
Sonia says, NOT BAD...FOR A FEW RUBBER BOOTS. BUT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOOD ENOUGH FOR A REAL GAME?
Audrey says, OH, YES, I AM!
Hector says, SONIA? AUDREY?
Audrey and Sonia say, HUH?
[Footsteps rustling]
Hector runs out of the jungle.
Hector asks, HAVE YOU SEEN PEARL? IT'S POSSIBLE THAT SHE MIGHT'VE ESCAPED WHILE I WAS EXAMINING HER.
[Gasping]
Audrey says, PEARL IS OUT HERE BY HERSELF?
Sonia says, WE NEED TO FIND HER.
[Grunting, footsteps rustling, Babou calling]
Sonia, Hector, and Audrey run into the jungle. Babou watches them from a vine.
[Purring]
Inside the Veterinary clinic, Hector pets Pearl, the cloud leopard kitten. He winks at Audrey.
Sonia says, OKAY, NOW WE CAN FINALLY START OUR DAY.
[Audrey giggling, birds chirping]
Audrey says, BUT WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THE FIRST THING ANYMORE.
[Sighing, pencil scratching]
Audrey crosses bowling and ice cream off her list.
Audrey says, OR THE SECOND.
Sonia says, OH, I'M SO SORRY, SWEETHEART.
Audrey says, IF WE RUN, WE CAN STILL GO TO THE MOVIES!
[Rustling]
Audrey closes the notebook.
Sonia says, WELL, LET'S GET GOING, THEN!
[Dramatic music plays]
Karl arrives, dripping.
Karl shouts, HELP!!! IT'S A DISASTER! A PIPE BROKE! THE WHOLE SHELTER'S GONNA BE UNDERWATER!
Sonia says, WHAT?! OH, NO!
[Footsteps rustling, Audrey sighing sadly]
Sonia follows Karl.
In the greenhouse, Sonia turns a bolt and stops a leak.
[Grunting, squeaking]
Sonia says, WHEW!
Karl says, AH, COME ON!
[Mud splashing, exclaiming]
Nearby, the wheels of a sports utility vehicle spin and mud covers Audrey and Sonia.
Karl says, OOPS. SO SORRY. IT LOOKS LIKE I'M STUCK HERE.
[Grunting, wheels whirring]
Audrey and Sonia push the back of Karl’s sports utility vehicle.
Karl says, PUSH A LITTLE BIT MORE, A LITTLE BIT MORE. THAT'S IT! THANK YOU!
[Splashing, grunting, laughing]
Karl drives away, and Audrey and Sonia fall into the mud. They look at each other.
Audrey says, HUH? OH.
A bolt bounces off Audrey’s head and lands on Sonia’s hand.
Sonia says, HUH?
Water sprays the mud off Audrey and Sonia.
[Rattling, exclamations, water splashing, Audrey growling]
[Upbeat music plays]
Later, Sonia and Audrey wear helmets and carry roller skates.
Audrey asks, YOU'RE SURE THIS TIME, RIGHT? WE CAN ACTUALLY GET OUR DAY STARTED?
Sonia says, DEFINITELY. OH!
[Door clicking]
Sonia opens the door, and Charlie stands on the doorstep with his camera.
Charlie says, HMM.
Sonia says, CHARLIE NAVET. WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
Charlie says, DON'T TELL ME YOU FORGOT OUR INTERVIEW ON THE TASMANIAN DEVIL?
[Smacking, light music plays]
Sonia smacks her palm on her helmet.
Sonia says, OH, NO! CAN WE RESCHEDULE FOR TOMORROW?
Charlie says, IMPOSSIBLE. MY EDITOR WANTS ME TO SEND IT IN BY TONIGHT AT THE LATEST.
[Sonia sighing]
Sonia says, OKAY. JUST WAIT FOR ME OUTSIDE, CHARLIE. I'LL BE THERE IN A MINUTE.
[Audrey gasping]
Audrey says, BUT, MOM, I...
Audrey’s eyes well up with tears.
Sonia says, SWEETHEART, THIS ARTICLE IS IMPORTANT FOR THE FUTURE OF THE TASMANIAN DEVIL. AND FOR THE SHELTER, TOO. I...
[Audrey whimpering]
Sonia says, I CAN'T JUST LET THEM DOWN.
[Sad music plays]
Sonia leaves the house. Hector watches her walk away and then carries a cat carrier with Pearl into the house foyer.
Hector says, MM.
[Audrey sniffling, Pearl yowling]
Hector poses in front of Audrey.
Hector says, MM... WELL, I'M NOT THE BEST SKATER, BUT I'LL GO SKATING WITH YOU IF YOU WANT.
[Clunking]
Audrey throws her helmet and roller skates on the floor.
Audrey says, I DON'T LIKE TO ROLLER-SKATE! IT WAS JUST TO SPEND TIME WITH MOM!
Hector says, MOM WOULD LIKE TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH YOU, TOO, BUT IT'S JUST THAT... YOU KNOW, SHE HAS A LOT OF RESPONSIBILITIES.
[Audrey sniffling]
Audrey says, ALL I KNOW IS THAT IT'S NOT FAIR!
[Audrey sobbing, Pearl meowing, door slamming, meowing]
Audrey runs upstairs to her bedroom.
By the waterfall in the greenhouse, Tommy crouches beside a frog. The frog jumps into a pond.
[Water falling, Tommy imitating croaking, laughing, croaking, splashing, upbeat music plays]
Tommy says, HEY! COME BACK.
Audrey stands behind Tommy with clenched fists, her eyes shut.
Tommy says, OH, HI THERE, AUDREY. IS YOUR DAY WITH YOUR MOM ALREADY DONE?
[Rustling]
Audrey says, OUR DAY HASN'T EVEN STARTED YET!
Tommy says, HMM.
Audrey says, BUT WE'RE GOING TO FIX THAT! DIDN'T YOU SAY THAT SOME FROGS CHASE INVASIVE SPECIES AWAY?
Tommy says, UH... YEAH.
Audrey says, THAT'S GREAT.
[Leaves rustling, Audrey laughing]
Audrey looks in a bush and peers into a knothole into a tree.
Audrey says, HMM?
[Squeaking]
Tommy says, UH, WAIT A SECOND. WHY IS THAT GREAT?
[Whooshing, upbeat music plays]
Audrey says, BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO SABOTAGE CHARLIE'S INTERVIEW! THE ONLY THING I NEED IS AN ENORMOUS VENOMOUS FROG FROM TASMANIA.
[Croaking]
Audrey says, AH.
[Pages rustling]
Tommy flips through his book.
Tommy says, HMM. UH, AUDREY, THERE AREN'T ANY VENOMOUS FROGS IN TASMANIA.
Audrey says, TA-DAH! THERE WEREN'T UNTIL NOW.
[Audrey giggling]
Tommy says, BUT ALTO ISN'T A VENOMOUS FROG! HE'S A HORNED FROG. AND HE'S NOT EVEN FROM TASMANIA!
Audrey says, HELLO, ALTO. DO YOU THINK YOU CAN ACT LIKE A BIG VENOMOUS FROG?
[Croaking]
Alto puffs up his cheeks. Elsewhere, Sonia sits on a rock while Charlie films her.
[Water splashing]
Sonia says, THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT. IN THE PAST 20 YEARS, 80 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION OF TASMANIAN DEVILS HAVE DISAPPEARED.
[Exciting music plays]
Audrey says, MOM! COME QUICK!
Sonia says, HUH?
Audrey says, THE PIPE BURST AGAIN, AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE DAD IS! THERE'S WATER EVERYWHERE!
Sonia says, AGAIN?
Charlie says, AHEM.
[Whooshing]
Sonia says, DON'T MOVE. I'M GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND I'LL BE RIGHT BACK!
Sonia runs away from Charlie and Audrey.
[Audrey cackling]
Charlie checks his watch.
Audrey says, HMM. HMM? SO... HAS MY MOM SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE FROG SPECIMEN SHE BROUGHT BACK FROM TASMANIA?
Charlie says, NO. THIS INTERVIEW IS ABOUT TASMANIAN DEVILS, NOT FROGS.
Audrey says, THE ONLY REASON I BRING IT UP IS THAT IT ESCAPED AND... THAT IT'S SUPER-VENOMOUS!
On the rock, Charlie pulls his feet up off the ground.
[Whooshing]
Charlie whimpers, HMM?! THERE'S... THERE'S... THERE'S A VENOMOUS ANIMAL ON THE LOOSE?!
Audrey says, THAT'S RIGHT. YOU HAVEN'T SEEN A FROG, HAVE YOU? IT'S AN EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY LARGE FROG.
[Whimpering, chiming]
Audrey puts her hand behind her back and gives a thumbs-up sign. Behind a rock and bushes, Tommy turns to Alto.
Tommy says, OKAY, ALTO, IT'S YOUR TURN. TRY TO LOOK DANGEROUS.
[Croaking]
Audrey says, IT'S KNOWN AS... THE DESERT ITCH FROG! IF YOU TOUCH IT, YOU START ITCHING ALL OVER! AH! AH! THERE IT IS! THE DESERT ITCH!
[Tense music plays]
Audrey points at Alto.
Charlie says, AH! GO AWAY! GO AWAY!
[Charlie’s teeth chattering, Tommy scratching, exciting music plays]
Tommy says, HELP ME! THE ITCH FROG TOUCHED MY HAND! WAH! IT'S SO ITCHY!!!
[Audrey screaming]
Alto sits on Audrey’s head.
Audrey says, IT TOUCHED ME TOO! OH! IT'S MAKING ME ITCH SO BAD!
[Alto squeaking]
Charlie falls backwards off the rock, and Alto jumps onto it.
Charlie says, AH! NO! DON'T! DON'T! NOT ME!
Tommy says, QUICK! RUN AWAY BEFORE IT GETS YOU!
Audrey says, YEAH! GO! AND DON'T COME BACK BEFORE THE END OF MOTHER...I MEAN, TOMORROW.
[Tommy giggling]
Charlie says, I'M GOING, I'M GOING! OH! EEEE!
Charlie packs his camera equipment.
[Snapping, clicking, squeaking, Alto croaking]
Charlie notices Alto sitting on his hands. He kneels and clutches his wrist.
Charlie says, HUH? AH! IT TOUCHED ME! THE DESERT ITCH!
Sonia asks, WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?
Tommy and Audrey say, UH...
[Alto croaking]
Sonia says, UH, WHAT'S OUR HORNED FROG DOING HERE, SO FAR AWAY FROM ITS OWN POND?
Charlie says, NO, DON'T TOUCH IT! IT'S VENOMOUS!
Sonia picks up Alto.
Sonia says, CALM DOWN, CHARLIE. HORNED FROGS ARE HARMLESS. AUDREY, WHY WOULD YOU HAVE TOLD CHARLIE THAT? AND YOU LIED TO ME ABOUT THE PIPE?
[Charlie gasping, water splashing]
Charlie says, YOU WERE JUST MAKING FUN OF ME? IN THAT CASE, I'M NEVER COMING BACK!
Sonia says, UGH. NO, NO! CHARLIE, DON'T LEAVE!
[Children muttering]
Sonia says, THAT'S GREAT. YOU KNEW HOW IMPORTANT THAT ARTICLE WAS FOR THE TASMANIAN DEVIL'S FUTURE! WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!
[Sad music plays]
Audrey says, BECAUSE... BECAUSE... BECAUSE TODAY WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME!
Audrey runs away from Sonia.
Sonia says, HUH.
[Alto croaking]
Tommy says, UH... I'LL BRING HIM BACK.
[Footsteps pattering, croaking, splashing]
Tommy grabs Alto. He releases him at the pond. Audrey sits by the water.
Tommy asks, ARE YOU OKAY, AUDREY?
[Water splashing, sad music plays]
Audrey says, SOMETIMES I WISH I WAS AN ENDANGERED ANIMAL. THAT WAY, MY MOM WOULD PAY ATTENTION TO ME!
Tommy says, YEAH, I KNOW, BUT ANIMALS ARE HER LIFE. DOESN'T THAT REMIND YOU OF ANYBODY? THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF THE TWO OF YOU CAN STILL DO.
Audrey stands up.
Audrey says, MM-HMM. TOMMY, LOOKS LIKE I NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN!
Tommy says, SURE, BUT IT DIDN'T REALLY GO ALL THAT WELL THE LAST—
[Tommy screaming]
Audrey grabs Tommy’s collar and yanks him forward.
[Upbeat music plays, rustling, animals calling, squeaking]
Later, Tommy leads Sonia through the jungle. He climbs a rock.
Tommy says, COME ON, FOLLOW ME.
Sonia says, BUT, TOMMY, I HAVE TO FIND AUDREY. PLEASE TELL ME WHERE SHE WENT.
Tommy says, DON'T YOU WORRY.
[Sonia grumbling]
Sonia climbs rocks behind Tommy.
Sonia says, MM? HUH?
Audrey and Tommy stand beside a double air mattress, a parasol, a lantern, and cups.
Tommy says, TA-DAH!
[Laughing, birds singing]
Sonia says, AUDREY? WHAT IS ALL THIS?
[Gentle music plays]
Audrey says, I'M REALLY SORRY, MOM.
[Rustling]
Audrey and Sonia hug.
Sonia says, OH, IT'S ALRIGHT, SWEETHEART.
Audrey says, I DIDN'T WANT TO SABOTAGE YOUR WORK. I... I JUST WANTED TO SPEND SOME TIME TOGETHER.
Sonia says, ME, TOO, SWEETHEART. I PROMISE I DIDN'T MEAN TO RUIN MY SPECIAL DAY WITH YOU.
Audrey says, SINCE WE WEREN'T ABLE TO DO OUR MOTHER-DAUGHTER DAY, I THOUGHT WE COULD DO A MOTHER-DAUGHTER EVENING INSTEAD.
Sonia says, I WAS THINKING EXACTLY THE SAME THING.
[Laughing, rustling]
They hug.
Both say, MM...
Later, beneath the moon, Audrey leans against a pillow. An empty pizza box lies next to her.
Audrey says, AH, THAT WAS REALLY GOOD.
[Audrey’s tummy rumbling]
Sonia says, MM-HMM.
[Laughing]
Audrey says, MOM?
Sonia says, MM?
[Gentle music plays, birds chirping]
Audrey says, IS... CHARLIE STILL MAD AT ME? I WASN'T VERY NICE TO HIM EARLIER.
Sonia says, WELL, IN THE END, HE DECIDED TO WRITE AN ARTICLE ON HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO RUN A SHELTER FULL-TIME AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR FAMILY.
Audrey says, AH! SO, HE'S GONNA HAVE QUESTIONS FOR ME TOO? COOL! THAT WASN'T EVEN ON MY LIST!
Sonia says, YES, BUT FOR NOW, LET'S JUST ENJOY OUR EVENING TOGETHER.
[Laughing]
[Upbeat music plays]
