Text reads, “TVO Kids + Apartment 11 Productions Original”.

A young hockey player wearing a green, white, and black uniform skates around an indoor ice rink holding the flag of Zimbabwe behind him.

A narrator says,
MEET LARS.
HE'S GOT SKILLS ON THE ICE.
HE'S ALSO LEARNING BY HIMSELF
HOW TO PLAY THE ANCIENT
INSTRUMENT OF ZIMBABWE.

Lars plays the kalimba, a small hollow box with metal reeds of varying sizes. Lars plucks the reeds.

He says, THIS IS THE KALIMBA.

The narrator continues,
AND HE LOVES TO HELP OUT
IN THE KITCHEN.

A plate of cooked greens, stewed meat, and sadza is served.

Lars states,
OH, THIS LOOKS SO GOOD.

A man wearing a black tracksuit with a red and white toque enters a locker room and sits with Lars.

The narrator says,
HE'S GOING TO BE VERY EMOTIONAL
WHEN HE GETS A SPECIAL SURPRISE.
LOOKS LIKE WE'RE READY.
ARE YOU? WELL, LET'S GO!

(Sunny's Quest theme)

Sunny, the sun, waves inside rings of orange, pink, and blue. Colourful graffiti featuring aspects of Canada covers a brick wall. The pictures of young kids smiling are mixed into the art.

The title reads, “TVO Kids Presents, Sunny’s Quest”.

Lars stands beside a calm lake. He wears a blue wet suit and a thick grey toque.

Lars says,
MY NAME IS LARS,
AND I'M TEN YEARS OLD.

Lars’ family sits on a picnic table behind him. His mother’s dark hair is tied up in twists. She wears jeans and a thick blue jacket. Lars’ father wears jeans and a hooded blue jacket. His head is shaved bald. Lars’ brother sits between his parents. He wears a thick black coat and blue jeans. His dark curly hair is partially dyed blonde.

Text reads, “Makadini Kanjani”.

Lars says,
THAT MEANS HELLO IN SHONEA.
SHONEA IS SPOKEN IN ZIMBABWE.
MY MOM IS FROM ZIMBABWE AND
MY DAD IS FROM THE NETHERLANDS.
AND THERE'S MY BROTHER.

Lars’ family waves.

Lars adds,
I'M FROM BEAUTIFUL HALIFAX,
NOVA SCOTIA.
HALIFAX IS THE CAPITAL CITY
OF THE PROVINCE OF NOVA
SCOTIA IN CANADA.
NOVA SCOTIA
HAS SO MANY BEAUTIFUL BEACHES,
SO I RECENTLY DECIDED TO LEARN
HOW TO SURF.
TODAY, I'M SHOWING MY LIFE AS
A CANADIAN ZIMBABWEAN DUTCH.

Canada and Zimbabwe are shown on a map.

Lars says,
ME AND MY FAMILY TRAVELED
FROM HALIFAX TO ZIMBABWE.
IT TOOK OVER TWENTY-SIX HOURS
TO GET THERE.
THIS IS A ZIMBABWEAN FLAG.

The Zimbabwean flag features green, yellow, red, and black stripes. In addition, a gold bird and a red star fill a white triangle on the left-hand side.

Lars says,
BLACK IS FOR THE PEOPLE.
RED REPRESENTS THE BLOODSHED
DURING THE WAR OF LIBERATION.
YELLOW
IS FOR THE MINERAL WEALTH.
GREEN IS FOR AGRICULTURE.
AND WHITE IS FOR THE PEACE
AND PROGRESS. WOW.
THERE ARE A LOT OF SYMBOLS
ON THE ZIMBABWE FLAG.
LET'S KEEP GOING.
THE MAIN LANGUAGES
SPOKEN IN ZIMBABWE
ARE SHONA AND NDEBELE.

Lars’ mom sits with Lars on a set of stairs in their house.

Lars says, HI MOM.

Lars’ mom says, HI LARS.

Lars asks,
CAN YOU TEACH ME SOME SHONEA?

Lars’ mom answers,
SURE.
KURUMIDZA KUGADZIRIRA
TIENDE KU HOCKEY.

Lars replies,
WHOA.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS,
BUT I HEARD HOCKEY.

Lars’ mom says,
IT MEANS…
HURRY UP. GET READY.
WE NEED TO GO FOR HOCKEY.

Lars replies,
OH, YEAH. I HOCKEY PRACTICE.

Later, Lars skates at the rink. He scores a goal on an empty net.

Lars says,
I LOVE PLAYING HOCKEY.
I PLAY FOR THE
CHEBUCTO ATLANTICS.

Lars sits in the locker room with his teammates.

He says,
THIS IS MY CHEBUCTO FAMILY
PRESTON, CADEN, EDDIE,
PHILLIPE, PARKER, COACH DARYL,
LOKUA, SAM, MY BROTHER MYRON,
AND THAT’S AARON.
Lars’ teammates wave. They huddle together and put their hands in the middle.

The players shout,
ONE, TWO, THREE…
CHEBUCTO!

The players skate across the ice.

Lars says,
COACH MAKES US WORK
HARD ON THE ICE
SO THAT WE CAN GET BETTER
EVERY SINGLE DAY.
WE PRACTICE FIVE DAYS A WEEK
AND WE DO A LOT OF DRILLS.
I COMPETE IN DOUBLE-A HOCKEY.
THAT MEANS THE LEVEL OF
COMPETITION IS PRETTY TOUGH.
I DON'T MIND THE PRESSURE
THAT COMES WITH THE COMPETITION.
I JUST THINK I CAN DO THIS.
MAYBE ONE DAY I'LL PLAY
IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
WHEN I GET OLDER.

Former NHL hockey player Willie O’Ree is pictured.

Lars states,
ONE OF MY HOCKEY
HEROES IS WILLIE O REE.
WILLIE O REE WAS THE FIRST BLACK
PLAYER TO PLAY IN THE NATIONAL
HOCKEY LEAGUE.
DID YOU KNOW, A LONG TIME AGO
THERE WAS A BLACK HOCKEY
LEAGUE CREATED IN HALIFAX.
BLACK RELIGIOUS LEADERS
AND COMMUNITY LEADERS
STARTED THE LEAGUE
TO BRING BLACK MEN TOGETHER.

Highlights of a game between the Chebucto Atlantics and their opponents are recorded.

Later, Lars wears a red and white apron while he leans on the counter in his kitchen. Bowls of ingredients are placed in front of him. His mom stands over the sink.

Lars says,
AFTER HOCKEY PRACTICE
I'M ALWAYS SUPER HUNGRY,
BUT I'M SO LUCKY
BECAUSE I GET TO HAVE DELICIOUS
ZIMBABWEAN MEALS LIKE SADZA!
THE NAME SADZA MEANS MEAL IN
SHONEA.
TO HAVE A FULL SHODEA MEAL
YOU HAVE TO HAVE WATER, MAIZE
MEAL, VEGETABLES, BEEF OR MEAT
OF CHOICE, TOMATOES, AND ONIONS

Lars’ mom adds ingredients into a pot while Lars eats it.

He says,
FIRST YOU HAVE
TO ADD MAIZE MEAL.
THEN YOU HAVE TO ADD SOME WATER.
WE'RE GOING TO STIR AND ADD MORE
MAIZE MEAL TO MAKE IT THICKER.
LOOKS LIKE IT'S READY.

Later, Lars and his mom let their sadza rest on the counter.

Lars says,
TA-DA!
THIS IS THE END
RESULT OF MAKING SADZA.
YOU SERVE SADZA UP WITH MUBORRA
WHICH MEANS VEGETABLES
IN ZIMBABWE.
WE EAT SADZA WITH OUR HANDS.

Lars scoops up the meat and vegetables with a piece of sadza and eats them together.

Lars says,
WHOA.
THIS IS THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD.
THANK YOU, MOM.

Red hearts float up as Lars hugs his mom.

She replies,
YOU'RE WELCOME.

Later, soccer jerseys hang by a window in Lars’ bedroom.

Lars says,
YOU GOT TO SEE THE STUFF
IN MY ROOM.
THESE TWO ARE MY FAVORITE JERSEYS
I HAVE BECAUSE IT'S DUTCH,
AND MY DAD IS DUTCH.
THIS IS MY MEDAL
I GOT IN CAPE BRETON.
I GOT IT BECAUSE MY TEAM
WENT TO A TOURNAMENT THERE,
AND WE WON THE TOURNAMENT.
THESE OTHER THREE
ARE FOR SOCCER.
AND THE BIG ONE UP TOP
IS FOR BEING ONE OF
THE BEST IN THAT TOURNAMENT.

Lars plays his kalimba.

He says,
THIS IS THE KALIMBA.
THE KALIMBA IS ACTUALLY
A SMALLER, MORE MODERN
VERSION OF THE MBIRA,
WHICH DATES BACK MORE THAN
A THOUSAND YEARS IN ZIMBABWE.
I DISCOVERED THE MBIRA
ON OUR LAST VISIT TO ZIMBABWE.
THE SHONEA
PEOPLE USE IT FOR CEREMONIES,
WHICH ARE ONLY EVENTS
TO HONOR THE ANCESTORS
AND CALL ON THEM FOR GUIDANCE.
IT'S LIKE A CELL PHONE LINE
THAT CONNECTS DIRECTLY
TO THE SPIRIT WHEN IT'S PLAYED.

Later, Lars’ family stands around their dining room table. Lars’ dad draws a triangle on a piece of yellow construction paper.

Lars says,
OUR FAMILY
LOVES TO PLAY BOARD GAMES,
TSORO YEMATATU,
WHICH MEANS STORM GAME IS
A STRATEGY GAME PLAYED ON A
TRIANGLE.
AND TO WIN,
YOU HAVE TO GET THREE IN A ROW.
IT'S ALMOST TIC TAC TOE,
JUST A LOT MORE ADVANCED.
BUT SOMETIMES THINGS GET PRETTY
INTENSE BETWEEN ME
AND MY BROTHER
BECAUSE I REALLY WANT TO WIN.

Lars and his brother Myron play the game.

Myron says, I WIN.

Lars pound his fist on the table and shakes Myron’s hand.

Lars says,
GOOD GAME.

An animated gift with purple paper and blue ribbon opens. Sunny pops out of it and blows a party blower.

Text reads, “Sunny’s Surprise”.

Coach Daryl walks into the locker room at the rink and hands a tablet to Lars.

Coach Daryl says,
AND WE GOT A LITTLE SURPRISE
FOR YOU.
OKAY, BUDDY.
JUST HIT PLAY ON HERE.

TVA sports reporter Andy Mailly-Pressoir appears on a video.

He says,
HEY LARS!
FROM MONTREAL.
HOCKEY'S ALL MY LIFE.
I'VE BEEN PLAYING HOCKEY
SINCE I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD.
I THINK I WAS TEN YEARS OLD
THE FIRST TIME I GOT CALLED
A MONKEY ON THE ICE.
OR SOME PEOPLE TOLD ME, LIKE,
GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY.
I WAS LIKE, HEY BRO,
I'M FROM HERE, I'M FROM CANADA.
SO YES, I'M PROUD TO BE
A BLACK HOCKEY PLAYER.
IF YOU WANT SOMETHING,
GO GET IT.
THAT'S MY ADVICE TO YOU AND
THAT'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.
SO LARS ONCE
YOU'LL GET TO THE NHL.
I'LL GET TO INTERVIEW YOU.
SO JUST COME. I'LL ASK ME.

Lars puts down the laptop.

He says,
I'M SPEECHLESS.
I HOPE YOU HAD FUN LEARNING
ABOUT MY
CANADIAN-ZIMBABWEAN-DUTCH
FAMILY.
THANKS FOR WATCHING. BYE.

Lars carries his surfboard into the lake.
