[Sizzling]

AND EXPLORE THE FOREST
LIKE A TRUE OUTDOORSMAN.

Jobim picks a mushroom off a tree branch.

Jobim says, GOT IT.

ARE YOU?

WELL, LET'S GO.

An animated sun waves. Photographs of children appear on a colourful brick wall. Text above the waving sun reads, “TVOkids presents.” Text beneath the waving sun reads, “Sunny’s Quest.”

[Upbeat theme song plays, needle scratching on record]

IS A SMALL TOWN IN ONTARIO.

HERE WITH MEDALS.
RIGHT OVER HERE.

HERE, ARE MY COOK BOOKS.

THIS IS MY PET BEARDED DRAGON, GOKU.

The Sierra Leone flag flutters. It features three horizontal lines, with green on top, white in the middle, and blue on the bottom.

[Popping, upbeat music plays]

Jobim says, THESE ARE THE FLAGS THAT
REPRESENT MY HERITAGE.

THIS IS SIERRA LEONE.
THIS FLAG IS GREEN,
WHITE AND BLUE.

I LOVE HOW THE GREEN REPRESENTS
NATURE. IT REMINDS ME OF THE
INCREDIBLE MOUNTAINS YOU CAN
FIND HERE.

THE WHITE LINE MEANS JUSTICE
AND THE BLUE REPRESENTS PEACE.

The flag of Ghana flutters. It features three horizontal lines, with red on top, yellow in the middle, and green on the bottom. In the middle of the yellow line, there is a black star.

STORIES THAT IMAGINE MY BROTHERS
AND I AS GREAT WARRIORS
LIKE ASHANTI KINGS FROM GHANA.

THE ASHANTI KINGS WERE KNOWN
FOR BEING FIERCE WARRIORS
AND HAVING KINGDOMS OF GOLD.

Jobim’s mother points to photographs on a wall.

Jobim’s mother says, SO THIS IS. MY MOMMY.
YOUR GRANNY.

Jobmimsays, WHEN MY MOM TELLS A STORY,
SHE TEACHES US ABOUT OUR ANCESTORS
FROM GHANA.

MY FAMILY KEEPS MANY PHOTOS
OF OUR ANCESTORS
UP IN THE HALLS OF OUR HOUSE
TO REMEMBER AND HONOR
THOSE PEOPLE WHO CAME BEFORE US.

FROM A REBELLION BY TURNING IT
INTO A DANCE

PRACTICING WHENEVER WE CAN.

THE MOVES THAT MY FRIENDS
AND FAMILY ARE PRACTICING
RIGHT BEHIND ME IS GINGA AND AÚ.

[Two men play rhythmic music and sing, chiming]

Jobim says, WE PRACTICE TO THE MUSICAL
SOUNDS OF THE BERIMBAU,
WHICH IS AN INSTRUMENT
THAT HAS A SINGLE STRING
ORIGINALLY FROM AFRICA,
WHICH IS COMMONLY USED
IN BRAZIL.

[Crunching leaves, background chatter]

Jobim says, HEY, LOOK,
I FOUND AN ELM OYSTER MUSHROOM.
COME AND CHECK IT OUT.

His father says, REALLY?

Jobim says, YEAH. THESE ONES ARE
DELICIOUS, TOO.

Jobim narrates, THESE MUSHROOMS
ARE ALSO CALLED FUNGI.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS ASK AN
ADULT IF IT'S ONLY EDIBLE KIND.
THE WRONG ONES ARE POISONOUS
AND CAN MAKE YOU VERY SICK.

His father says, ALL SAFE.

Jobim says, THANKS.

Later, Jobim and his mother stand in their kitchen. He bounces excitedly. Blue text beneath him reads, “Afro-Influenced Seafood Paella.” Yellow text reads, “African and Caribbean.”

[Upbeat music plays, beeping]

Jobim says, TODAY I'M MAKING
AFRO-INFLUENCED SEAFOOD PAELLA.

SO THIS DISH IS A BALANCE OF MY
AFRICAN AND CARIBBEAN HERITAGE.

WHAT IS IN A PAELLA?

IT'S FILLED WITH A LOT
OF DELICIOUS VEGETABLES,
PRAWNS, SHRIMP,
AND PLUS THE MUSHROOM
WE FORAGED EARLIER OUTDOORS
IN THE WOODS.

Jobim chops a stem off a large mushroom.

[Chopping]

He says, RIGHT NOW,
I'M CHOPPING OFF THE STEM
BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT
TO GET ANY DIRT IN YOUR FOOD.
THAT WOULD BE DISGUSTING.

WHEN I GROW UP,
I WANT TO BE A CULINARY CHEF,
JUST LIKE ADRIAN FORTE.

Red text beneath a man chopping vegetables in a photograph reads, “Adrian Forte.”

Jobim says, I'VE BEEN TAKING COOKING
MASTER CLASSES FOR YEARS.

WITH AN ADULT NEARBY
FOR EXTRA SAFETY
OR AS MY ASSISTANT.

Jobim’s mother waves.

GOING TO ADD IN THE RICE.

THE AFRICAN INFLUENCE IS
THE JOLLOF RICE COOKING TECHNIQUES
THAT WE USE TO MAKE THE PAELLA.

Purple text reads “Jollof Rice Cooking Techniques.”

[Beeping, upbeat music continues, sizzling]

Jobim carries a the frying pan to a table. His family sits waiting.

Jobim says, OKAY, EVERYBODY,
LET'S EAT.

[Cheering]

Jobim’s father says, OH, LOOKS GREAT.

Jobim’s mother says, THAT'S AWESOME.

Jobim and his family eat the rice.

[Clanking utensils]

Jobim narrates, I LOVE COOKING
BECAUSE IT LETS ME EMPTY
MY MIND AND CALM DOWN.
AND ALSO, I EAT A LOT.

An animated blue present box wiggles. The present opens and the animated sun rises and blows into a party horn. Yellow text reads, “Sunny’s Surprise!”

Jobim’s mother crouches beside him at the table. She turns a laptop computer towards him.

His mother says, I'VE GOT SOMETHING
FOR YOU FROM SOMEBODY WHO WE
THINK YOU WOULD WANT TO HEAR FROM.
YOU READY?

Jobim says, YES.

His mother replies, AWESOME. OKAY.

On the computer screen, Adrian Forte wears a blue shirt. His black hair is buzzed short. Lime green text beneath Adrian reads, “Adrian Forte. Private chef and author.”

[Beeping, upbeat music plays]

Adrian Forte says, HEY, JOBIM.
ADRIAN FORTE HERE,
PRIVATE CHEF AND AUTHOR.

I'M EXTREMELY EXCITED THAT
I GET TO SPEAK WITH YOU TODAY
ABOUT OUR MUTUAL PASSION
FOR THE CULINARY ARTS.

FOR ME TO GET TO WHERE I AM
TODAY, I HAD TO BE VERY AMBITIOUS,
EXTREMELY HARD WORKING,
AND VERY DEDICATED TO MY CRAFT.

THOSE ARE THE THREE CORE VALUES
THAT YOU HAVE TO INSTILL IN
YOURSELF TO MAKE IT IN THIS
INDUSTRY, WHICH I THINK YOU HAVE.

BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR CULINARY
JOURNEY, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD
TO MEETING YOU AND POTENTIALLY
COOKING WITH YOU IN THE
KITCHEN TOGETHER.

TAKE CARE.

Jobim says, THANKS.

THOSE ARE REALLY HELPFUL TIPS.
I APPRECIATE IT A LOT.

Jobim’s mother says, YOU'RE WELCOME.

Jobim and brother number one jump on the trampoline.
