[Soft, gentle music plays]
An aerial view shows a lush mountain forest with a river running through a valley. Text reads, T.V.O. Presents.
Host Taviss narrates, AT THIS VERY MOMENT,
IN THIS VERY FOREST,
THERE ARE STRANGE CREATURES
NSLIDING ACROSS THE FOREST FLOOR.
Moss covers the forest floor and trees.
Taviss narrates, THEY LIKE THE DARK
AND ONLY REVEAL THEMSELVES
WHEN THE EARTH IS WET.
In the forest, Taviss crosses a muddy path wearing her curly hair in two braids, a yellow rain jacket over a pink plaid shirt and blue T-shirt, jeans, and hiking boots.
Taviss narrates, THEY'RE SLIMY.
THEY'RE SQUISHY.
WHO ARE THESE STRANGE
FOREST DWELLERS?
Water rushes down a waterfall in the forest on a moss-covered mountain.
[Water splashing]
Taviss stands in front of a mossy boulder.
Out loud, Taviss says, LET'S GO MEET THEM!
She skips through the forest.
[Magical music plays]
The title appears within an image of a girl looking up at trees through a magnifying glass. The title reads, Secrets of the Forest.
[Exciting music plays]
An aerial view of a forest shows light fog over tall trees.
Taviss narrates, TODAY'S SECRET TAKES PLACE
ON THE LAND
OF THE LEKWUNGEN PEOPLE.
Taviss walks through the forest.
She narrates, TODAY THIS AREA IS KNOWN AS
GOLDSTREAM PROVINCIAL PARK,
WHICH IS A TEMPERATE
RAINFOREST ECOSYSTEM
ON VANCOUVER ISLAND,
BRITISH COLUMBIA.
YOU KNOW I LOVE ME
A RAINFOREST!
Taviss presses her hand against the moss on a boulder.
She narrates, TODAY WE'RE GOING TO SEARCH FOR
NA SMALL FOREST CRITTER,
AND DR. KRISTIINA OVASKA
IS LEADING THE CHARGE!
Dr. Kristiina Ovaska smiles. She has long, grey hair, a puffy red jacket, and a head magnifier.
Taviss narrates, KRISTIINA IS A SCIENTIST
AND RESEARCHER
WHO HAS WORKED
WITH ORGANIZATIONS
ALL OVER THE WORLD.
Kristiina slides the magnifiers down over her eyes and examines a small patch of moss.
Taviss narrates, SHE STUDIES SLUGS!
AND SNAILS, BUT I THOUGHT
THEY WERE THE SAME THING.
FILL ME IN, KRISTIINA!
Elsewhere in the forest, Taviss meets Kristiina at a fork in a trail.
Out loud, Taviss asks, IS THERE ACTUALLY A DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN SLUGS AND SNAILS?
Kristiina says, WELL, THEY ARE RELATED.
SLUGS ARE REALLY
SNAILS WITHOUT A SHELL,
SO YOU CAN ALWAYS
TELL THEM APART.
In an animation, two slugs inch across grass.
One slug says, SHELLS ARE SO OUT THIS SEASON.
The other slug says, TOTALLY.
In the forest, Taviss says, HONESTLY, I'VE NEVER
ACTUALLY SEEN A SLUG.
Kristiina says, YOU'VE COME
TO THE RIGHT PLACE.
An aerial view shows people driving through the forest on a highway.
Kristiina says, EVEN RIGHT OFF THE HIGHWAY HERE,
WE HAVE THIS WONDERFUL, MOIST,
TEMPERATE RAINFOREST.
AND IF WE GET LUCKY, WE MAY EVEN
FIND B.C.'S MOST FAMOUS SLUG.
THE BANANA SLUG.
[Dinging]
Taviss smiles.
She narrates, BANANA SLUG?
SOUNDS… YELLOW?
Out loud, Kristiina asks, DO YOU WANT TO
TRY TO FIND ONE.
Taviss says, YES!
LET'S DO IT!
Kristiina says, LET'S GO!
She follows Taviss toward a trail. Elsewhere in the park, Kristiina places square sheets of cardboard held together with binder climbs on one side on the ground.
Kristiina says, THESE ARE ACTUALLY
SLUG TRAPS.
She crouches beside Taviss. Kristiina wears dark blue rain gear, and Taviss wears yellow rain gear.
Kristiina explains, WHAT THESE REALLY DO
IS THEY IMITATE FALLEN BARK
AND OUR TRAP,
WHICH IS REALLY NOT THE TRAP,
BECAUSE THE SLUGS CAN
COME AND GO AS THEY WISH.
WE JUST PROVIDE A MOIST
RETREAT FOR THEM.
Taviss asks, WHAT'S A MOIST RETREAT?
Kristiina says, IT'S A PLACE
ON THE FOREST FLOOR THAT, UH,
WHERE THE SLUGS CAN HANG OUT
AND FEEL COMFORTABLE.
Taviss nods.
Kristiina adds, UNLIKE SNAILS THAT HAVE
THEIR HOUSE ON THEIR BACKS,
THEIR SHELL,
THEY CAN RETREAT IN THERE.
AND IF IT GETS DRY,
THEY'RE STILL NICE AND MOIST.
BUT SLUGS NEED MOISTURE
FROM THE ENVIRONMENT.
Taviss says, MOIST RETREAT.
KIND OF SOUNDS LIKE
A FANCY SPA, BUT GROSSER.
In an animation, a slug with cucumber slices over its eyes relaxes beside a pool in a room full of steam.
[Slug sighing]
The slug says, I SO NEEDED
THIS MOIST RETREAT.
In the forest, Kristiina asks, YOU READY TO GO
AND FIND A BANANA SLUG?
Taviss cheers, BANANA SLUG, HERE WE COME!
She pumps her fist.
[Gentle music plays]
Taviss and Kristiina walk down a trail in the forest.
Taviss narrates, I'M KIND OF LOOKING LIKE
A BANANA IN THIS RAIN GEAR.
WE'RE COMING FOR YOU,
BANANA SLUGS!
Taviss and Kristiina look around the trail. Kristiina checks a large tree.
Kristiina says, OH, TAVISS, COME HERE.
HERE'S OUR FIRST CLUE.
She points to a spot on the tree.
Kristiina says, SLUG SLIME.
Slug slime on the tree stretches across an open space like a spider web.
Taviss says, OH, COOL!
WHAT EVEN IS SLIME?
Kristiina says, SLIME IS...
IT'S A GOOEY SUBSTANCE
THAT SLUGS MAKE.
AND IT'S VERY IMPORTANT
FOR THE SLUGS
SO THAT THEY CAN MOVE
OVER TOUGH SURFACES.
SLUGS CAN EVEN GO
OVER BROKEN GLASS.
Taviss asks, AND THEY WON'T GET HURT?
Kristiina says, NO.
THE SLIME PROTECTS THEM.
Taviss asks, CAN I TOUCH IT?
Kristiina says, YEAH, SURE.
GO AHEAD.
[Gentle, upbeat music continues]
Taviss pokes at the slug slime on the tree.
She says, OOH, IT'S KIND OF STICKY.
Kristiina says, SLIME ALSO PROTECTS THE SLUGS
FROM PREDATORS.
ONE TYPE OF SLIME
IS LIKE GLUE.
IF A PREDATOR, SUCH AS A SNAKE,
COMES AND TRIES TO EAT THE SLUG,
ITS MOUTH GETS SHUT.
TIGHT.
JUST LIKE IT WAS GLUED TOGETHER.
Taviss says, THAT'S AMAZING!
She frowns.
Taviss says, WELL, UNLESS YOU'RE A SNAKE.
[Gong ringing]
Taviss narrates, IT'S TIME FOR:
A LITTLE KNOWN BUT STILL
TOTALLY TRUE AND AMAZING STORY!
A slug inches across a leaf and leaves behind a trail of slime.
[Inspirational music plays]
Taviss narrates, SLUG SLIME HAS BEEN USED
FOR CENTURIES
TO TREAT WOUNDS AND BURNS.
A person presses a cotton pad against a child’s knee.
Taviss continues, SOME FIRST NATIONS COMMUNITIES
HAVE EVEN USED IT
TO HEAL TOOTHACHES.
A slug eats a leaf. A black-haired boy presses his hand against his cheek and chin.
[Groaning]
Taviss narrates, YEP!
SLUG SLIME IN YOUR MOUTH.
A blond-haired girl sticks out her tongue.
She says, AHH!
Taviss narrates, WHATEVER WORKS, RIGHT?
A slug sticks its head under slime on a piece of bark.
Taviss narrates, ONE SPECIES OF SLUG,
THE DUSKY ARION,
HAS SUCH STICKY SLIME,
IT GAVE SCIENTISTS THE IDEA
TO CREATE A BANDAGE
THAT SEALS WOUNDS.
A person spreads a clear substance over a wound.
Taviss narrates, A GOOD REMINDER THAT
WHENEVER HUMANS GET ALL EXCITED
ABOUT OUR LATEST INVENTIONS,
NATURE'S JUST LIKE,
"BEEN THERE, DONE THAT."
A black slug in a forest lies on forest litter, including leaves, rocks and sticks.
Taviss narrates, THIS HAS BEEN
A LITTLE KNOWN BUT STILL
TOTALLY TRUE AND AMAZING STORY!
[Gentle music plays]
In the forest with Taviss, Kristiina says, OH, LOOK AT THIS.
In a drier section of the forest, Kristiina points to a leaf.
Kristiina asks, YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS?
Taviss looks at a black substance on the leaf.
Taviss guesses, UM... CHOCOLATE?
Kristiina says, I DON'T THINK SO.
IT'S SLIME POOP!
She grins at Taviss.
Kristiina says, DO YOU KNOW, ONE OF SLUG'S
FAVOURITE FOOD IS MUSHROOMS.
Taviss asks, DOES THAT MEAN THEY SPREAD
THE SEEDS OF THE MUSHROOM?
Kristiina says, THEY SPREAD THE SPORES.
SPORES ARE LIKE SEEDS
AND SLUGS SPREAD THEM
ALL THROUGH THE FOREST FLOOR
THROUGH THEIR POOP.
Taviss says, SO THE SLUGS HELP MAKE
MORE MUSHROOMS?
Kristiina says, THEY DO MORE THAN THAT.
SOME MUSHROOMS HAVE A HUGE
UNDERGROUND NETWORK
AND THEY CONNECT THE TREES.
SO THE SPORES THAT
THE SLUGS SPREAD
ACTUALLY HELP THE FOREST TREES
AND OTHER PLANTS TO GROW.
Taviss says, THAT'S SOME TOP-NOTCH POOP.
In an animation, a slug stands on a first-place podium, a worm stands on a second-place podium, and a snail stands on a third-place podium.
[Drum roll]
An announcer says, AND THE GOLD MEDAL
FOR POOP GOES TO...
[Cymbal crashing]
The announcer says, BANANA SLUG!
[Crowd cheering]
[Gentle music plays]
In the forest, it rains in a small stream. Taviss and Kristiina walk toward a large tree.
Kristiina says, OH, WOW, TAVISS, I THINK
YOU'RE GOING TO BE HAPPY.
Kristiina smiles. Taviss looks excited.
Taviss says, WHOA!
IT REALLY DOES
LOOK LIKE A BANANA!
She crouches near a Banana slug.
Taviss says, LIKE A ROTTEN BANANA,
BUT A BANANA!
[Dinging]
Taviss narrates, OH, YEAH, I GET THE NAME NOW.
Out loud, Taviss says, I THOUGHT SLUGS WERE SUPPOSED
TO BE SMALLER THAN THIS.
IT'S SO BIG!
Kristiina smiles.
She says, IT IS.
BANANA SLUG IS ACTUALLY
THE SECOND BIGGEST SLUG
IN THE WHOLE WORLD.
Taviss says, WOW.
In an animation, a worm smiles.
The worm says, READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!
The worm inches toward a Banana slug.
The worm says, OH, YOU'RE RIGHT THERE.
The Banana slug frowns and says, OH, MAN.
In the forest, Taviss and Kristiina look at the banana slug on a fallen branch covered with moss.
Taviss says, HM, ARE THOSE ITS EYES?
Kristiina says, YES, THEY ARE.
THE ONES ON THE UPPER TENTACLES.
THE SLUG CAN LOOK
BEHIND ITSELF WITH ONE EYE
AND FORWARD WITH ONE EYE.
AND THE SLUG CAN ALSO
RETRACT THEM.
THAT MEANS PULL THEM
RIGHT INTO THE BODY
SO THEY'RE SAFE AND PROTECTED.
A slug retracts its tentacles and eyes.
Taviss says, AW, I WISH I CAN SEE
IN FRONT OF ME AND BEHIND ME!
She looks back and forth.
Taviss asks, DO THEY HAVE MOUTHS?
Kristiina says, THEY DO.
IT'S JUST BELOW
THE SECOND PAIR OF TENTACLES.
AND, DO YOU KNOW,
THEY HAVE A TONGUE
AND THEY HAVE THEIR TEETH
ON THE TONGUE.
Taviss nods.
She narrates, OKAY, THAT'S WEIRD.
Out loud, she politely asks, KRISTIINA,
MAY I PLEASE HOLD THE SLUG?
Kristiina says, USUALLY IT'S BEST JUST TO
OBSERVE THEM,
BUT THIS TIME,
LET'S SEE WHAT IT FEELS LIKE.
Taviss quietly cheers, YES!
Kristiina says, SO GO AHEAD.
[Exciting music plays]
Kristiina says, YOU CAN JUST PICK IT UP.
Taviss carefully picks up the Banana slug.
Taviss says, OOH, IT'S REALLY STICKY.
[Dinging]
Taviss narrates, I'M HOLDING A BANANA.
A BANANA SLUG.
NO BIGGIE.
Taviss runs her finger down the back of the slug.
Out loud she says, OH, ITS TENTACLES CAME OUT!
Kristiina says, YEAH, IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S...
IT'S TRYING TO FIGURE OUT
WHO YOU ARE.
Taviss says, THERE'S A BIG YELLOW THING
THAT SUDDENLY APPEARED HERE.
I GUESS I DON'T LOOK LIKE
A BANANA SLUG AFTER ALL.
[Drumsticks tapping]
[Rock music plays]
A river runs through a valley in a lush forest. Text reads, The Fun Factor.
Taviss says, APPARENTLY,
GOLDSTREAM PROVINCIAL PARK
HAS AN EPIC WATERFALL
AND I'M GONNA GO FIND IT.
In the park forest, Taviss skips across a bridge.
[Rock music continues]
Taviss climbs down to an underpass with moss on the sides.
Taviss says, HELLO!?
She shrugs.
Taviss says, HM.
She runs through the underpass to another part of the forest and explores another trail. At the edge of a steep hill, Taviss raises her arms.
Taviss yells, WHOA!
[Echoing]
Taviss walks up to a tall waterfall on a rocky cliffside. The water ripples over moss on the rock.
[Water rushing]
Taviss says, WOW.
She gazes up at the waterfall. Later, in the forest, Taviss stands on a trail with Kristiina. Kristiina holds different plastic food containers.
Kristiina says, WE'RE GOING TO USE
THESE CONTAINERS
TO GO SLUG HUNTING.
She gives Taviss one of the containers.
Taviss asks, BUT WHO'S THE THIRD ONE FOR?
Kristiina says, THAT IS FOR
MY GRANDDAUGHTER, OLIVIA!
Kristiina looks past Taviss to a girl with long, wavy blond hair wearing a blue unicorn rain jacket. The blond-haired girl, Olivia, waves.
Taviss narrates, OLIVIA IS
A PROFESSIONAL GRANDDAUGHTER.
SHE WORKS WITH
SCIENTIST GRANDMAS
IN THE FIELD OF
SLUG APPRECIATION.
Olivia joins Taviss and Kristiina.
Olivia says, HI.
Kristiina says, HERE'S YOUR CONTAINER, OLIVIA.
She gives Olivia a plastic container.
Kristiina says, REMEMBER, GIRLS, WHEN WE'RE
LOOKING UNDER LOGS AND BARK,
WE WANT TO PUT
EVERYTHING BACK BECAUSE
THAT MIGHT BE SOMEONE'S HOME.
Olivia says, GOT IT.
Taviss says, COME ON!
Kristiina says, LET'S GO.
She follows Taviss and Olivia down the trail.
[Upbeat music plays]
Taviss and Olivia walk through the forest and scan the ground. They collect slugs in their containers and compare them together. In the dense forest, they sit on the ground near Kristiina.
Olivia says, I FOUND ONE. COME AND SEE.
She picks up a slug from under a large leaf. Taviss and Kristiina stand and join Olivia.
Taviss says, OOH!
Kristiina says, HEY, LET'S SEE WHAT YOU FOUND.
Olivia says, I FOUND THIS BLACK ONE.
She holds a black slug rolled into a ball on her finger.
Kristiina says, THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD ONE.
IT'S AN INTRODUCED SPECIES.
Taviss says, OOH!
Kristiina says, IT'S CALLED A CHOCOLATE ARION.
SEE HOW IT'S ROLLED INTO A BALL?
Taviss says, YEAH.
Kristiina says, THAT'S WHAT THEY DO
WHEN THEY'RE SCARED.
Taviss says, WE SHOULD PUT IT BACK
IF IT'S SCARED.
Kristiina says, YEAH, LET'S DO THAT.
Taviss holds a small slug in the palm of her hand.
She says, AND I FOUND THIS REALLY COOL ONE.
Kristiina says, IT'S RELATED TO THE BLACK ONE THAT WE JUST LOOKED AT.
Taviss’ slug has a black and yellow back.
Taviss says, OOH!
Olivia says, THAT'S REALLY COOL.
Kristiina holds a tiny slug on the tip of her finger.
She says, AND I WILL SHOW YOU THE ONE THAT I FOUND.
Kristiina shows Taviss and Olivia the slug on her finger.
Taviss says, OOH, IT'S SO TINY!
Kristiina says, BUT THIS IS NOT THE BABY.
THIS IS AS BIG AS THEY GET.
Taviss and Olivia say, WOW.
Kristiina says, AND IT'S CALLED A MEADOW SLUG.
Taviss says, I FOUND THIS REALLY LIGHT SLUG.
IT'S SUPER COOL.
Kristiina takes a slug from Taviss.
Kristiina says, OH, HERE'S ANOTHER
INTRODUCED SPECIES.
THIS ONE IS CALLED A MILKY SLUG
BECAUSE IT HAS ITS SLIME.
IT'S MILKY.
IT'S NOT CLEAR.
Taviss says, OH, WAIT!
WE STILL NEED TO
CHECK OUR TRAP!
Kristiina says, OH, YEAH, WE ALMOST FORGOT.
Taviss, Kristiina and Olivia crouch around the cardboard slug trap.
Taviss says, OLIVIA, YOU DO THE HONOURS.
Olivia carefully opens the now damp cardboard.
She says, LOOK, THERE'S A SNAIL.
[Taviss gasping]
Taviss says, OOH!
Kristiina asks, ANYTHING ELSE?
Olivia says, THERE'S A BANANA SLUG.
Taviss says, OOH!
She picks up a small Banana slug hidden in the leaves under the slug trap.
Olivia says, IT LIKE LOOKS LIKE
A VERY SMALL ONE.
Taviss says, AW, A LITTLE BABY BANANA!
I LOVE SLUGS.
Olivia says, ME TOO!
Kristiina says, ME THREE!
Taviss says, AND OLIVIA...
YOU HAVE ONE OF THE
COOLEST GRANDMAS EVER.
Kristiina says, AWW.
She smiles at Olivia.
[Gentle music plays
An aerial view shows the forest.
Taviss narrates, THE MEGA-MOIST ENVIRONMENT
OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
IS THE PERFECT PLACE
TO HUNT FOR ONE OF
THE BIGGEST SLUGS ON EARTH.
Taviss explores the forest with Kristiina and holds a Banana slug.
Taviss narrates, THE BANANA SLUG HAS SUPER SLIME
AND SUPER POOP!
THIS INCREDIBLE YELLOW CRITTER
IS JUST ONE OF MANY SLUGS,
BIG AND SMALL, THAT CALL
THIS WET FOREST WONDERLAND HOME.
Taviss kneels in moss.
Out loud, she says, THE SECRET IS OUT.
Taviss spreads her arms.
She shouts, SLUGS ARE SPECTACULAR!
