[Joyful music plays]

A child says, WHEE!

[Child giggling]

[Soft, gentle music plays]

The sun shines brightly through an opening in a forest canopy. Text reads, T.V.O. Presents.

Host Taviss says, FOR OVER 100 YEARS,
ONE RESILIENT TREE
HAS BEEN FIGHTING TO SURVIVE
A DEADLY DISEASE.

Taviss walks through the forest. Taviss wears her curly brown hair in two ponytails and a denim vest over a white and blue striped T-shirt.

Taviss continues, IT'S CALLED THE BEECH TREE
AND IT'S IN TROUBLE.
LET'S SEE IF WE CAN
TAKE DOWN THE CULPRIT
THAT'S THREATENING
THESE BEAUTIFUL TREES!

Out loud, Taviss says, FOLLOW ME.

She climbs off a fallen tree and skips through the forest.

[Magical music plays]

The title appears within an image of a girl looking up at trees through a magnifying glass. The title reads, Secrets of the Forest.

[Cheerful music plays]

An aerial view shows a lush forest with multiple ponds.

Taviss narrates, OUR ADVENTURE TODAY
TAKES PLACE
ON THE TRADITIONAL TERRITORY
OF THE THREE FIRES CONFEDERACY,
WHICH INCLUDES THE OJIBWE,
POTAWATOMI, AND ODAWA PEOPLE.

Sunlight shines through the trees. Taviss looks at a leaf.

Taviss narrates, THIS PART OF THE LAND
IS NOW KNOWN AS
KILLBEAR PROVINCIAL PARK.

An Ontario Parks sign reads, Killbear, Makwa Neyoshing.

Taviss narrates, PERSONALLY, I THOUGHT THERE'D BE
A LOT MORE SAND
AND PEOPLE YELLING, "SURF'S UP!"

People run into an ocean with surfboards.

[Splashing]

Taviss continues, BUT IT TURNS OUT THIS BEECH TREE
IS ACTUALLY SPELT WITH TWO E'S.
EASY MISTAKE TO MAKE.

Lush leaves of tall trees in the forest form the forest canopy.

Taviss narrates, AND THIS IS OUR GUIDE,
ISABELLE MOY.

Isabelle Moy wears her long black hair in a loose bun and an Ontario Parks uniform that includes a name tag and a beige, button-down, collared shirt.

Taviss narrates, ISABELLE WORKS FOR KILLBEAR,
AND IF YOU ASK ME,
SHE'S GOT A PRETTY GREAT OFFICE.

Isabelle examines one of the Beech trees in the forest.

Taviss quietly narrates, I'M TALKING ABOUT THE PARK.

An aerial view shows the lush forest canopy.

At a normal volume, Taviss narrates, I'M MORE THAN READY
TO HELP ISABELLE
SAVE THE BEECH TREES
FROM THIS DANGEROUS DISEASE!

Taviss meets Isabelle by a tree on a trail in the forest, wearing jeans and hiking boots.

Isabelle says, CHECK IT OUT.
THIS IS
ONE OF KILLBEAR'S BEECH TREES.

Taviss asks, THIS IS A BEECH TREE?

She raises an eyebrow.

[Dinging]

Taviss narrates, BIG TREES, LUSH LEAVES.
DID I GET THIS
WHOLE DISEASE THING WRONG?

Out loud, Isabelle says, YOU’D NEVER KNOW IT,
BUT IT'S ACTUALLY
INFECTED WITH A DEADLY DISEASE
CALLED BEECH BARK DISEASE.

Taviss says, IT LOOKS FINE TO ME.
HOW CAN YOU TELL IT'S INFECTED?

Isabelle says, WELL, FIRST THINGS FIRST,
IS YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO
IDENTIFY A BEECH TREE
WHEN YOU SEE ONE.
AND THE BEST WAY TO IDENTIFY
BEECH TREES IS BY ITS BARK.
IT'S SMOOTH AND GRAY,
JUST LIKE AN ELEPHANT'S LEG.

In an animation, leaves grow around an elephant’s legs.

The elephant says, OH, NO!

In the forest, Isabelle says, THIS BEAUTIFUL TREE IS ACTUALLY
ONE OF THE PARK'S FEW
REMAINING HEALTHY BEECH TREES.

Taviss asks, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REST?

Isabelle says, TEN YEARS AGO, KILLBEAR WAS
HIT HARD BY BEECH BARK DISEASE,
AND SO WE HAD TO REMOVE A LOT
OF THE BEECH TREES IN THE PARK.

Taviss asks, HOW MANY TREES ARE LEFT?

Isabelle says, WELL,
THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD TIME
FOR A CHALLENGE.

[Dinging]

Taviss smiles.

She narrates, NOW WE'RE TALKING.

Isabelle asks, THINK YOU CAN FIND ONE OF THE
PARK'S REMAINING BEECH TREES?

Taviss says, EASY!

She runs through the forest.

[Exciting music plays]

Taviss narrates, SHOW YOURSELVES, BEECH TREES!

She looks up from under a fallen tree.

Taviss narrates, IF I WERE A BEECH TREE,
WHERE WOULD I BE?

She continues through the forest.

Taviss narrates, ELEPHANT LEG, ELEPHANT LEG.
I'M LOOKING
FOR AN ELEPHANT LEG!

Taviss runs up to a tall, thin tree.

Out loud, says, ISABELLE! ISABELLE!
I FOUND ONE!

Isabelle catches up with Taviss and looks at the tree.

Isabelle says, YOU DID, AND NOT ONLY
DID YOU FIND A BEECH TREE
BUT YOU FOUND ONE THAT'S
IN THE FIRST STAGE OF INFECTION.

Taviss says, THIS TREE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE
THE HEALTHY ONE.

Isabelle says, IT DOES, BUT IT ACTUALLY HAS
SOME OF THE SCALE INSECTS ON IT.

Taviss says, HM.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK.

She pulls a magnifying glass out of her back pocket and looks at the tree with it.

[Inquisitive music plays]

[Dinging]

Taviss narrates, OKAY, BUT I DO NOT SEE
ANY INSECTS.
IS THIS A PRANK?

Out loud, Taviss says, I THOUGHT INSECTS WERE SUPPOSED
TO HAVE A BODY, LEGS AND ARMS.

She looks at Isabelle.

Isabelle says, WELL, THAT'S TRUE, BUT THE
SCALE INSECTS ARE SO SMALL
THAT YOU CAN'T ACTUALLY SEE THEM
EVEN WITH YOUR HAND LENS.
NOW, TOUCH THIS PART HERE.
THAT WHITE STUFF.

Taviss touches one of many white specks on the tree.

Taviss says, KIND OF FEELS LIKE CLAY.

Isabelle says, YEAH!
SO WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE IS
THE SCALE INSECTS
HAVE BURROWED INTO THE TREE,
AND THEY'RE PRODUCING
THIS WAXY WHITE SUBSTANCE
IN ORDER TO PROTECT THEMSELVES.

Taviss says, WEIRD.
WHAT DOES
THE INSECT WANT FROM THE TREE?

Isabelle says, WELL, THEY WANT WHAT ALL PLANTS
AND ANIMALS WANT: TO LIVE!

Taviss nods.

Isabelle explains, SO THE SCALE INSECTS
ARE ACTUALLY GONNA STAY
IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT
FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES,
AND THEY'RE GONNA SUCK OUT
THE SAP FROM THE BEECH TREE.

In an animation, a scale insect scurries across a tree.

The insect says, MMM.
YUMMY SAP.

The insect drinks from the tree with a straw.

[Slurping]

[Contented sigh]

[Tree groaning]

[Insect slurping]

In the forest, Taviss says, SO WE JUST NEED TO
GET RID OF THE BUGS?
THIS DISEASE
IS GOING DOWN!

Isabelle says, UNFORTUNATELY,
IT'S NOT THAT SIMPLE.
ONCE THE BUGS ARE ATTACHED,
THERE'S ACTUALLY
NOTHING THAT WE CAN DO
TO GET RID OF THEM.
THAT'S JUST THE FIRST STEP
IN A LONG, SLOW END
TO THE TREE'S LIFE.

[Dinging]

Taviss narrates, WAY TO BRING THE MOOD DOWN,
ISABELLE.

Out loud, Taviss says, THAT'S SAD.
WHAT'S THE
NEXT STAGE AFTER THE SCALE BUGS?

Isabelle says, I'LL SHOW YOU.
FOLLOW ME.

She leads Taviss through the forest over piles of leaves.

[Leaves crunching]

[Exciting, rhythmic music plays]

Videos from around the world flash behind text that reads, Where in the World?!? The videos include a sunset, a waterfall, a giraffe, a rice field, a desert, a valley, a river and a lush forest.

Taviss narrates, BEECH TREES CAN BE FOUND
ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Sunlight shines through a forest of Beech trees.

Taviss narrates, IN FACT, BEECH TREES IN EUROPE
ALSO HAVE SCALE INSECTS ON THEM.

A world map highlights Europe.

Taviss continues, BUT GET THIS: THE INSECTS
DON'T DAMAGE THE BEECH TREES
IN EUROPE
BECAUSE THE INSECTS
ARE NATURAL TO THOSE ECOSYSTEMS.

A boat transports a load of logs.

Taviss narrates, WHEN SOME WOOD WAS BROUGHT
TO EASTERN CANADA FROM EUROPE
A HUNDRED YEARS AGO,
THE INSECTS CAME WITH IT
AND THEY WERE HAPPY
TO FIND CANADIAN BEECH TREES
AND STARTED SNACKING AWAY.

Sunlight shines over a Beech tree.

Taviss narrates, SINCE OUR ECOSYSTEM
ISN'T ADAPTED,
BEECH BARK DISEASE
OFFICIALLY ARRIVED IN CANADA.
TALK ABOUT A LONG TRIP.

[Gentle music plays]

In the forest of Beech trees, Taviss follows Isabelle to another tree.

Isabelle says, THIS IS
OUR BEECH TREE.

Taviss feels the tree.

She says, YEAH, THERE IS DEFINITELY
SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS BARK.

Isabelle says, YOU'RE RIGHT.
SO WHAT'S HAPPENED HERE
IS THE SCALE INSECT HAS
GOT ONTO THE BARK OF THIS TREE.
IT'S MADE ITS LITTLE HOLE IN
THE BARK.
AND THEN IT'S ALLOWED FOR
A CANKER FUNGUS TO GET IN.
AND IT'S EATING AWAY
AT THE INNER LAYER OF THE BARK.
THE TREE DOESN'T LIKE THAT,
AND SO IT'S ACTUALLY PRODUCING
THESE CIRCULAR FORMATIONS THAT
YOU CAN SEE HERE ON THE BARK.

Taviss says, IT TOTALLY LOOKS LIKE
IT HAS SCABS AND SCARS ON IT.

In an animation, an infection bubbles to the surface of bark on a tree wearing multiple bandages.

The tree groans, UGH.
NOT AGAIN!

In the forest, Isabelle says, SO BEECH BARK DISEASE
IS THAT SCALE INSECT
AND THAT CANKER FUNGUS.
THOSE TWO TOGETHER
WEAKEN THE TREE
AND ALLOW ANOTHER FUNGUS...

Taviss says, ANOTHER FUNGUS!?

Isabelle says, ANOTHER FUNGUS!
TO GET IN,
AND THAT FUNGUS
ROTS THE TREE FROM THE INSIDE.
THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM
BECAUSE THEN YOU GET
THAT HAPPENING.

Isabelle points to a fallen Beech tree split at its bottom.

Taviss says, OH.

Isabelle says, THIS IS BEECH SNAP.
AND AS YOU CAN SEE,
IT'S SUPER DANGEROUS.
THAT OTHER FUNGUS
WEAKENS THE WOOD,
AND IT CAN MAKE IT SNAP
JUST LIKE THAT.

Isabelle snaps her fingers.

[Snapping]

Isabelle continues, AND ESPECIALLY IN A PLACE
LIKE KILLBEAR
WHERE LOTS OF PEOPLE
AND PUBLIC SPACES,
ANY TIME THAT WE HAVE
A BEECH TREE ON A PUBLIC SPACE,
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO
CUT IT DOWN.

[Record scratch]

Taviss narrates, TAKE DOWN A TREE?!
DOESN'T THIS GAL KNOW
I LOVE TREES?

Out loud, Isabelle continues, NOW I'M HOPING YOU CAN
HELP ME OUT WITH THAT TODAY.

Taviss says, WELL, I DON'T REALLY LIKE
CUTTING DOWN TREES,
BUT IF WE HAVE TO,
LET'S DO IT.

Isabelle nods.

Taviss narrates, OFF WE GO
TO TAKE DOWN A TREE.

An aerial view shows Taviss and Isabelle on a road in the forest.

[Birds chirping]

Taviss pauses and says, THAT TREE LOOKS
STRAIGHT-UP DEAD.

She looks toward a leafless tree.

Isabelle says, YES, IT DOES.

Taviss says, AND IT'S A BEECH TREE, RIGHT?

Isabelle says, IT IS A BEECH TREE!
AND YOU CAN SEE HOW
THERE'S NOT A LOT OF LEAVES
UP AT THE TOP THERE, RIGHT.
THAT'S WHAT WE CALL
CROWN DIEBACK,
WHICH IS A BIG SIGN
OF BEECH BARK DISEASE.

Taviss says, WHICH MEANS
THIS TREE HAS TO GO.

Isabelle says, YOU GOT IT.

[Dramatic rock music plays]

Two men wearing safety gear, including hard hats with eye and ear protection, gloves, and high-visibility shirts, join Taviss and Isabelle carrying chainsaws. One man wears grey stripes on his shirt, and the other wears orange and grey stripes. Taviss and Isabelle put on high-visibility vests.

Isabelle says, MM-HM.

She and Taviss put on hard hats with eye and ear protection and gloves. Taviss and Isabelle high-five. They look up at the sick Beech tree through binoculars.

Isabelle says, ALL RIGHT, SO FIRST
WHAT WE GOTTA TO DO IS
MAKE SURE THAT THE TREE IS CLEAR
OF ALL BIRDS AND ANIMALS.
ARE WE ALL CLEAR?

Taviss scans the area around the tree with her binoculars.

She says, ALL CLEAR.

The man wearing orange stripes says, NOW WE’RE JUST
LOOKING AT THE TOP OF THE TREE
TO SEE WHICH WAY IT'S LEANING
AND WHICH WAY
THAT WE EXPECT IT TO FALL.

He looks up at the tree.

He says, YEP.
AND IT LOOKS LIKE
IT'S COMING RIGHT THIS WAY.

The man wearing orange stripes points toward Taviss and Isabelle.

Isabelle says, WE BETTER
GET OUT OF THE WAY, THEN!

She and Taviss walk away from the road, and the man wearing orange stripes starts to cut the tree with a chainsaw, wearing his ear and eye protection.

[Chainsaw screeching]

The man wearing orange stripes cuts into the tree at an angle, and the tree falls across the road onto trees on the other side.

[Trees crashing into each other]

Taviss yells, THANK YOU
FOR YOUR SERVICE, BEECH TREE!

The men wearing high-visibility shirts shake the tree off its trunk, and it falls onto the road. Taviss and Isabelle crouch beside the fallen tree.

[Gentle music plays]

Taviss says, I SEE LOGS LIKE THIS
ALL THE TIME IN THE FOREST.
SO DOES THAT MEAN
WE COULD JUST LEAVE IT HERE?

Isabelle says, WELL, SOMETIMES WE DO
LEAVE LOGS BECAUSE
INSECTS AND ANIMALS
WILL USE IT AS HABITAT.
AND SO THE TREE CAN STAY
PART OF THE FOREST.

Taviss nods. In an animation, squirrels run into a hollow, fallen tree.

[Tree giggling]

The tree says, THAT TICKLES!

More squirrels run into the tree.

In the forest, Isabelle says, BUT, THIS ONE, IT'S ACROSS A ROAD SO WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO MOVE IT.

Taviss confidently says, I GOT THIS.

She tries to pick up the tree.

[Taviss grunting and groaning]

[Record scratching]

Taviss narrates, UPDATE!
TREES ARE HEAVY!

[Taviss groaning]

Out loud, Taviss says, AS A MATTER OF FACT,
I THINK I'M GONNA
LEAVE IT TO THE CREW.

Isabelle nods and says, MM-HM. I THINK THAT'S A GOOD IDEA.

[Isabelle laughing]

[Exciting music continues]

The man wearing orange high-visibility stripes lowers the eye protection on his hard hat and uses a chainsaw to cut branches off the fallen tree.

[Chainsaw screeching]

The man wearing orange stripes cuts the tree into small logs. Taviss and Isabelle each pick up a log.

Taviss narrates, NOW THIS I CAN HANDLE!

She and Isabelle load logs into the back of a pickup truck. The man wearing orange stripes cuts the rest of the fallen tree.

[Logs clattering]

[Chainsaw screeching]

Taviss, Isabelle and the men wearing high-visibility shirts share a group high-five.

[Laughing]

[Rock music plays]

An aerial view shows a lake and forest canopy. Text reads, The Fun Factor.

In the forest, Taviss says, KILLBEAR IS ONE OF THE MOST
POPULAR CAMPING SPOTS
IN ONTARIO!
AND WHAT'S THE BEST THING
ABOUT CAMPING?

A hammock hangs between two trees beside a tent and two bikes at a campsite.

Taviss says, S'MORES!

Flames flicker in a campfire.

[Fire crackling]

Taviss says, LET'S GET S'MORING!

Taviss and Isabelle walk up to a table with a plate of chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers.

Isabelle says, YUM!

Taviss says, MARSHMALLOW...

She sticks a giant marshmallow to the end of a roasting stick. Taviss and Isabelle roast marshmallows over the fire.

Isabelle says, OH, YOURS CAUGHT ON FIRE.
WATCH OUT.
BLOW IT OUT, BLOW IT OUT!

Taviss blows out a flame on her marshmallow.

[Taviss blowing sharply]

Taviss says, OH, YEAH.
THIS IS PERFECT.

She admires her burnt marshmallow. At the table, she places the marshmallow between two graham crackers.

Taviss narrates, OKAY, SO I LIKE IT BURNT.
DON'T JUDGE ME.

Out loud, Isabelle says, SQUASH IT TOGETHER.
SQUASH.

Taviss sandwiches her marshmallow between the graham crackers and pulls the roasting stick out.

Isabelle says, PERFECT.

She holds her lightly toasted marshmallow between two graham crackers.

Isabelle says, ALL RIGHT, ONE S'MORE MADE,
YOUR S'MORE MADE.

Taviss says, MM-HM.

Isabelle pulls her roasting stick out of her marshmallow. Taviss and Isabelle tap their s’mores together, and each takes a bite.

[Crunching]

[Taviss and Isabelle moaning]

Taviss nods and says, SO GOOD.

Isabelle says, AMAZING.

[Gentle music plays]

Elsewhere in the forest, sunlight shines through Beech tree leaves.

Isabelle says, TEN YEARS AGO,
BEECH BARK DISEASE
WAS RUNNING RAMPANT
THROUGH KILLBEAR
AND SO WE HAD TO REMOVE
A LOT OF OUR BEECH TREES.

Isabelle shows Taviss a tablet.

Isabelle says, THIS IS A PICTURE
OF WHAT THIS SITE LOOKED LIKE
AFTER WE REMOVED
ALL OF THE BEECH TREES.

A picture shows a section of the forest full of tree stumps and leafless trees.

Taviss says, IT LOOKS SO EMPTY.

Isabelle lowers the tablet, and Taviss looks at the luscious Beech trees.

Taviss says, WHOA!
IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD NOW!

She and Isabelle walk into a small clearing surrounded by trees.

Isabelle says, SO THIS AREA IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE
OF FOREST REGENERATION.
EVEN THOUGH WE HAD TO REMOVE
ALL OF THE BEECH TREES,
LOOK AT HOW GREEN IT IS NOW!
THE FOREST WILL ALWAYS ADAPT.

Taviss asks, WHY DON'T YOU JUST TAKE OUT
ALL THE BEECH TREES
SO THE DISEASE IS GONE
AND JUST PLANT NEW ONES?

Isabelle says, I LOVE YOUR ENTHUSIASM, TAVISS.
WE CAN'T DO THAT BECAUSE
EVEN IF WE TAKE
OUT THE BEECH TREES,
THE DISEASE
WILL ALWAYS BE HERE.
SO THE BEST THAT WE CAN DO IS
TO TRY TO PREVENT THE SPREAD
TO OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

Taviss asks, AND HOW DO WE DO THAT?

Isabelle says, THE BEST, AND REALLY,
THE ONLY WAY,
IS TO NEVER, EVER MOVE WOOD
FROM ONE FOREST TO ANOTHER.

Taviss says, OH, THAT'S HOW THE DISEASE
GOT HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Isabelle says, EXACTLY.

Taviss says, AND THAT I CAN DO.

[Gentle music plays]

An aerial view shows the forest canopy.

Taviss narrates, BEECH BARK DISEASE
HAS ENTERED KILLBEAR
AND WILL NEVER LEAVE.

Sunlight shines through the trees and over the fallen, split Beech tree.

Taviss continues, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN
THE FOREST WON'T SURVIVE.

Taviss runs through the forest with Isabelle.

Taviss narrates, WE CAN KEEP AN EYE ON
THE SICK TREES
AND EVENTUALLY REMOVE THEM
TO KEEP THE AREA SAFE.
BECAUSE OF BEECH BARK DISEASE,
THE BEECH TREES
WON'T SURVIVE FOREVER,
SO NOW'S THE TIME
TO CELEBRATE THEM!

Taviss crouches beside a fallen Beech tree.

Out loud, Taviss says, THE SECRET IS OUT:
BEECH BARK DISEASE CAN'T
AND WON'T BE STOPPED!

She jumps up and runs down a trail.

[Uplifting music plays]
