[Soft, gentle music plays]

An aerial view shows a lush forest. Text reads, T.V.O. Presents.

Host Taviss narrates, HIDDEN WITHIN THE ENDLESS
NGREENS AND BROWNS OF THE FOREST
THERE'S A SECRET RAINBOW
OF COLOURS!

In the forest, Taviss gazes at a yellow flower. Taviss has curly, auburn hair and wears a puffy, maroon-coloured vest over a white and brown, short-sleeved shirt.

Taviss continues, COLOURS THAT ARE ALIVE.
THAT TRANSFORM.
THAT TELL THE STORIES
OF OUR ANCESTORS!
HOW CAN WE DISCOVER
THIS COLOURFUL WORLD?

Bright sunlight shines through the trees.

Taviss says, FOLLOW ME!

She runs down a trail in the forest.

[Magical music plays]

The title appears within an image of a girl looking up at trees through a magnifying glass. The title reads, Secrets of the Forest.

[Whooshing]

An aerial view shows the lush forest.

Taviss narrates, TODAY'S SECRET
BRINGS US TO THE LAND
OF MANY INDIGENOUS NATIONS.
THE WENDAT, ANISHINABEK,
HAUDENOSAUNEE,
AND MISSISSAUGAS OF THE CREDIT
HAVE LIVED ON THIS LAND
FOR CENTURIES.

Water ripples down a creek. On a highway, people drive over the forest.

Taviss continues, NOW KNOWN AS TORONTO, ONTARIO,
THIS LAND NOW HOLDS
THE GROUNDS OF T.F.S.,
CANADA'S INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL.
IN THIS VERY FOREST,
OUR EYES WILL BE OPENED
TO A WHOLE NEW WORLD:
A WORLD OF COLOUR!
ALL THANKS TO JASON LOGAN.

In the forest, Jason Logan has short, curly, grey hair and wears a blue, long-sleeved collared shirt over a light blue T-shirt with a bandana around his neck.

Taviss narrates, HE IS AN ARTIST, AUTHOR,
DESIGNER, FORAGER,
AND, PERHAPS COOLEST OF ALL,
AN INK MAKER!

At a table in the forest, Logan strains mashed berries into a funnel and beaker.

Taviss continues, AND THAT, MY FRIENDS,
IS TODAY'S FOREST SECRET.
WE ARE MAKING INK!

Taviss and Jason meet under a highway. Taviss carries a backpack, and Jason carries a mesh bag.

Taviss asks, JASON, WHAT EXACTLY IS INK?

Jason says, UH, WELL, TAVISS,
IT'S THREE THINGS:
THERE'S WATER, THERE'S COLOUR,
AND THERE'S SOMETHING
TO BIND THEM TOGETHER.

Taviss nods.

Jason adds, HUMANS HAVE BEEN USING INK
FOR A LONG TIME
TO WRITE STUFF DOWN
AND TO COMMUNICATE.

Taviss says, LIKE CAVE DRAWINGS.

Jason says, EXACTLY LIKE CAVE DRAWINGS.

Jason and Taviss nod.

Jason continues, THAT'S REALLY THE OLDEST,
OLDEST INK THERE IS.
THE THING I ALSO LOVE ABOUT INK
IS THAT IT'S KIND OF LIKE A
PLAYGROUND FOR
MAGIC AND SCIENCE.

[Dinging]

Taviss narrates, OKAY, JASON, COLOUR ME INTRIGUED.

Jason says, OH, THERE'S ONE OTHER INGREDIENT
I FORGOT TO TELL YOU ABOUT.
YOU HAVE TO BE CURIOUS.
ARE YOU IN?

Taviss says, I'M IN!

Taviss and Jason leave. Near a bridge, they walk down a path.

Taviss says, SO, JASON, WHY ARE WE MEETING
UNDER A BRIDGE NEXT TO THE ROAD?

Jason says, WELL, THIS IS ACTUALLY ONE OF
MY FAVOURITE KINDS OF AREAS
TO FIND ALL THE MATERIALS
YOU MIGHT NEED FOR MAKING INK.

[Cars whooshing past]

Jason says, I LOVE WHERE CITIES MEET NATURE.

In an animation, a group of trees approach a building.

One tree says, KIDS, THIS IS OUR NEW HOME.

Two eyes and a mouth appear on the building.

The building says, WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD.

The first tree says, AH! YOU CAN TALK?

Beside the bridge, Jason says, THERE'S PROBABLY
SOMETHING WE CAN FIND
EVEN JUST RIGHT AROUND HERE
IN THIS PARKING LOT.

He looks around at the plants lining the path and at the ground.

Taviss asks, WHAT'S THAT?

Taviss and Jason crouch.

Jason says, OH, ACTUALLY, THAT'S A GREAT PIECE OF RUST.

Jason picks up a rusty piece of metal.

Taviss asks, WHAT? WE'RE GONNA PUT RUST IN THE INK?

Jason says, WELL, ACTUALLY, RUST IS
AN AMAZING INGREDIENT FOR INK.
WE'RE JUST GOING TO NEED A FEW
OTHER THINGS TO GO WITH IT.

Taviss narrates, SECRETS OF
A PARKING LOT.
WHO KNEW?

Jason and Taviss continue through a gate and toward a forest.

Taviss narrates, BUT NOW TO THE FOREST WE GO!

Jason and Taviss walk down a steps into the forest. They pause on a landing.

Taviss says, I DON'T KNOW, JASON. I'M SEEING A LOT OF GREEN AND BROWN.

Jason and Taviss look around at the tall trees. In an animation, a stick holds a megaphone.

The stick says, WE ARE COLOURS! SAY IT WITH ME.

A moss-covered rock holds a sign that reads, "Green is a Colour." A small pile of poop holds a sign that reads, "Bet on Brown!" A leaf and tree protest with the stick, rock and poop.

They all say, WE ARE COLOURS!

On the steps, Jason says, ACTUALLY, WHEN YOU GET IN
REALLY CLOSE AND REALLY LOOK,
THERE'S SO MANY VARIATIONS
OF GREEN AND BROWN.
LIKE IF YOU SORT OF GET LOW...

Jason and Taviss crouch and look at leaves, rocks, dirt and acorns on the landing.

Taviss says, HM.

Taviss picks up an acorn.

Taviss says, OH, LIKE THIS ACORN. IT'S GOT A LOT OF BROWN.

Jason says, YEAH, AND THE CAP OF THE ACORN,
WHEN YOU ADD IT TO
SOME OF THAT RUST WE FOUND,
ACTUALLY MAKES AN INCREDIBLE
SILVER INK.

Taviss says, I WANT TO MAKE SILVER INK. LET'S COLLECT SOME!

Jason says, YEAH, LET'S DO IT.

[Upbeat music plays]

In a timelapse, Jason and Taviss walk down the steps and collect acorns. Later in the forest, Jason follows Taviss across a wooden plank over muddy water.

Taviss says, DOING BALANCE BEAM.

Jason says, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THIS IS ACTUALLY A WILD GRAPEVINE DON'T THINK THERE'S ANY GRAPES.

On a trail in the forest, Jason points to a dry, bare grapevine.

Jason says, IT DOESN'T LOOK VERY ALIVE TO ME.

Taviss asks, SHOULD WE TAKE SOME BARK TO MAKE SOME INK?

Jason says, WE COULD TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF BARK. WHY NOT? YEAH.

Other bare grapevines hang from trees.

Taviss says, OOH, GRAPEVINES.

Jason says, THERE MUST BE GRAPES
AROUND HERE SOMEWHERE.
UH, OH, YEAH, AND THERE ARE
SOME WILD GRAPES.

He spots purple grapes growing on a lush vine.

Jason says, THESE MAKE ONE OF MY
FAVOURITE KINDS OF INK,
WHICH IS A NICE, BRIGHT
PURPLE COLOUR,
WHICH IS REALLY HARD TO MAKE.

[Gong ringing]

Taviss narrates, IT'S TIME FOR:
A LITTLE KNOWN BUT STILL
TOTALLY TRUE AND AMAZING STORY.

[Inspirational music plays]

Clouds move through the sky over grassy and rocky hills.

Taviss narrates, OVER 3000 YEARS AGO,
ONE OF THE MOST
COVETED PIGMENTS IN HISTORY
WAS CREATED
IN THE ANCIENT CITY OF TYRE.

Aerial views show ancient ruins that include buildings with stone columns. A purple dye spreads across the water.

Taviss narrates, THIS PURPLE PIGMENT
WAS CREATED FROM MUCUS
FROM THE GLANDS OF A SEA SNAIL.
TO PUT IT POLITELY,
IT DID NOT SMELL GOOD.

A sea snail scurries across the sea floor.

Taviss narrates, IT TOOK HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS
OF SNAILS
TO MAKE ONE TINY OUNCE
OF PURPLE
AND IT WAS RESERVED
ONLY FOR ROYALTY,
HENCE ROYAL PURPLE.

Artwork shows a person wearing jewels and a purple robe.

Taviss narrates, THIS HAS BEEN A LITTLE KNOWN BUT STILL TOTALLY TRUE AND AMAZING STORY.

[Upbeat music plays]

In the forest, Jason says, SO A GREAT WAY TO SEE IF IT'S GOT ANY PIGMENT IS ACTUALLY TO SQUISH IT.

Jason and Taviss pluck small, purple grapes off a grapevine. Taviss squishes grapes between her fingers.

[Squelching]

Taviss says, WHOA! THIS ONE HAS A LOT OF PIGMENT.

Jason says, THAT WAS A GOOD ONE.

Grape juice drips down Taviss’ fingers.

Taviss says, AND IT'S PINK! IT IS PINK.

Jason says, IT'S PINK.

Taviss says, I LOVE PINK.

The grape juice stains Taviss’ fingers pink.

Jason says, WAIT 'TILL WE TRY THIS ON PAPER.

Elsewhere in the forest, clusters of yellow flowers grow in tall bushes.

Taviss says, WHOA! I SEE A LOT OF YELLOW NOW!

She walks up to the flower bushes with Jason.

Jason says, OH, YEAH, LOOK AT THAT!
THIS IS CANADIAN GOLDENROD.
YOU CAN ACTUALLY
MAKE INK FROM THIS.
A REALLY NICE YELLOW INK.

In an animation on a stage, a Canadian Goldenrod speaks into a microphone.

The Goldenrod says, WHEN… WHEN I GROW UP, I, I WOULD LIKE TO BECOME INK.

[Light applause]

The Goldenrod says, THANK YOU.

In the forest, Taviss reaches for a Goldenrod.

Taviss asks, HOW MANY SHOULD WE PICK?

Jason says, JUST PICK ONE OR TWO
FROM EACH PLANT
SO THAT WE LEAVE SOME
FOR THE BEES AND THE BUTTERFLIES
AND TRY TO FIND
THE VERY BRIGHTEST YELLOW ONES.

Taviss says, OKAY.

Taviss picks some of the Goldenrod flowers.

Taviss says, ONE, HERE!

Taviss drops the flowers in a plastic, resealable bag.

[Playful music plays]

Taviss says, THIS ONE.

She picks another flower. Jason and Taviss look at more flowers and continue their hike through the forest. In a small ditch, Taviss carefully follows Jason toward a drain pipe where water flows.

[Water bubbling]

Jason says, WATER IS ONE OF
THE KEY INGREDIENTS OF INK.
AND IF YOU TAKE
THIS BOTTLE HERE...

Jason hands Taviss a small glass bottle.

Jason says, WE NEED TO
COLLECT SOME WATER.
THERE'S ALL KINDS OF MINERALS
AND CHEMICALS
AND EVEN THOUGH IT'S INVISIBLE,
THE KIND OF WATER
THAT YOU USE FOR YOUR INK
WILL CHANGE ITS COLOUR
AND WILL MAKE VERY TINY LITTLE
SUBTLE DIFFERENCES.

Taviss fills the bottle with water from the drain pipe and twists on the lid.

Taviss says, THIS IS GONNA MAKE SOME FUNKY INK.

Taviss gives the bottle back to Jason.

Jason says, I THINK IT WILL.

[Gentle music plays]

In a clearing in the forest, Jason and Taviss work at a table with supplies that include propane canister burners with pots, funnels in graduated cylinders, various sizes of beakers, and other forest finds, including fruits and nuts.

Taviss narrates, CHECK OUT THIS INK MAKING LAB! PRETTY PROFESH.

Taviss carefully drops her Canadian Goldenrod flowers into a pot with a boiling liquid.

[Bubbling]

Jason pours drain pipe water into a pot and adds more acorn caps to a pot.

Jason says, SO WE'VE GOT OUR GOLDENROD BOILING AWAY HERE. THE LONGER WE WAIT FOR IT TO BOIL, THE MORE INTENSE THE COLOUR WILL GET.

Taviss nods.

[Dinging]

Taviss narrates, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO WAIT. CUE T.V. MAGIC!

[Slide whistle]

Later in the clearing, Taviss sleeps with her head on the table. Jason looks in the Goldenrod pot.

Jason says, OH, WAKE UP.

Jason taps Taviss’ shoulder and wakes her up.

Jason says, I THINK IT'S READY.

Taviss sits up and says, UH, WHAT? OH!

[Dinging]

Taviss narrates, SEE WHAT I DID THERE? T.V. MAGIC.

Taviss says, OH. IT'S READY!

Jason says, YEAH. LOOK AT THAT.

Jason carefully pours the yellow Goldenrod ink through a strainer and down a funnel into a beaker.

Taviss says, WHOA. IT'S SO BRIGHT!

Jason asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK? SHOULD WE TRY IT OUT ON PAPER?

Taviss says, YES!

Jason says, LET'S DO IT.

Taviss paints on a piece of white paper with Goldenrod ink.

Jason says, LOOK AT THAT BRIGHT CANADIAN GOLDENROD INK.

Taviss says, WHOA!

Taviss paints a heart.

Taviss asks, CAN WE TRY THE ACORN ONE NOW?

Jason says, YEAH, LET'S TRY IT.

Taviss dips a paintbrush into brown ink.

Jason says, OKAY, WHAT COLOUR HAVE WE GOT THERE?

Taviss drags the paintbrush across a piece of paper.

She says, A BROWNIE ORANGY-NESS.

Jason says, MISSING, THOUGH, IS THE RUST.

Taviss says, OH, THE RUST.

Jason says, SO, IF YOU PUT VINEGAR TOGETHER WITH RUST, YOU GET RUST WATER.

Jason points toward a large beaker of dark yellow rust water.

Jason says, WHY DON'T YOU TAKE JUST A DROPPER FULL OF IT AND WE'LL ADD IT TO THE ACORN AND SEE IF ANYTHING HAPPENS.

Taviss uses a dropper to adds droplets of rust water to the acorn ink painting.
Taviss says, WHOA! IT'S TURNING SILVER!

The yellow rust water turns the acorn ink silver.

Jason says, IT'S TOTALLY TURNING SILVER.

Taviss asks, ALL BECAUSE OF THE RUST?

Jason explains, INSIDE A PIECE OF RUST IS AN IRON ATOM.

Taviss says, OH.

Jason continues, AND INSIDE THE ACORN CAPS, THERE'S A SPECIAL THING CALLED A TANNIC ACID. AND IN THE AIR THERE'S OXYGEN.

Taviss says, YEAH.

Jason says, SO, WHEN YOU PUT ALL THREE
OF THOSE THINGS TOGETHER,
YOU'VE GOT TWO ATOMS
THAT COME TOGETHER,
THEY COLLIDE
AND THEY MAKE MAGIC.

Taviss says, SO THAT'S WHY, WHEN IT SITS,
IT BECOMES DARKER
'CAUSE IT HAS OXYGEN.

Jason says, EXACTLY.

The silver colour darkens.

Taviss says, THE INK TAKES IN OXYGEN LIKE US. IT'S BREATHING!

Jason says, IT IS BREATHING. IT'S ALIVE.

Taviss says, THAT'S SO COOL.

[Drum sticks tapping]

[Rock music plays]

Text reads, The Fun Factor.

Taviss says, TODAY WE'RE LOOKING AT THINGS
SUPER CLOSELY,
SO I'M CHALLENGING JASON
TO A GOOD OLDFASHIONED GAME
OF I SPY.

Taviss sits at the bottom of a hill.

She says, THINK I CAN BEAT HIM?

At the end of a trail, Jason and Taviss sit by a small, shallow pond in the forest.

Jason says, OKAY, I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE SOMETHING THAT IS...

He looks around the forest.

Jason says, ROUND AND PURPLISH BLACK.

Taviss guesses, THAT STICK?

She points toward a stick in a small, leafy waterfall.

Jason says, NO.

Taviss guesses, THAT THING OVER THERE?

She points far away to her right.

Jason says, NO!

Taviss says, I GIVE UP.

Jason says, THEY'RE BUCKTHORN BERRIES.

Dark berries grow on a tree branch.

Taviss groans, OHHH!

Jason says, YOUR TURN.

Taviss says, I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE SOMETHING THAT IS GRAY, BLACK AND BRIGHT SOMETIMES.

Jason says, NOT A CLOUD.

Taviss says, NOPE. ONE MORE GUESS.

Jason guesses, WHAT ABOUT A STICK?

Taviss says, NOPE. IT'S THE LAMPPOST.

She points toward a lamppost on the highway overhead.

Taviss says, DON'T FEEL BAD, JASON. I ALWAYS WIN AT I SPY.

Jason nods and says, I BELIEVE YOU.

[Water gently bubbling]

[Gentle music plays]

In the clearing ink laboratory, a bee stands on an apple. Taviss and Jason sit at the table.

Jason says, I THINK IT'S TIME.

Taviss asks, FOR WHAT?

Jason says, THE WILD GRAPE INK.

Taviss says, YES! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS THE WHOLE ENTIRE DAY.

Jason says, LET'S PUT SOME WILD GRAPES IN THERE.

Taviss puts a handful of wild grapes into a mortar.

She asks, NOW I SMASH?

Jason says, SMUSH 'EM!

Taviss says, YES!

She gently pushes the grapes into the mortar with the pestle and squishes them.

[Squelching]

Taviss says, WE'RE GONNA MAKE YOU INTO INK.

Jason says, BECAUSE THIS IS A WILD GRAPE MAGICAL LIVING INK, WE COULD ACTUALLY MAKE A FEW DIFFERENT COLOURS WITH IT.

Jason pours the squished grape ink into a beaker through a funnel and onto blank paper. Jason spreads the ink around the paper with the bottom of the beaker.

Jason says, YOU KNOW, WHAT WE NEED IS SOME BAKING SODA.

Taviss asks, HOW MUCH?

Jason says, OH, JUST TRY A LITTLE DRIP. SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Taviss uses a dropper to add droplets of baking soda mixed with water to the grape ink on the paper.

[Taviss gasping]

The purple ink turns blue.

Taviss says, IT TURNS BLUE! WOAH.

Taviss watches the blue colour spread into the purple.

Jason says, THIS ONE IS CALLED LYE
AND YOU HAVE TO BE
VERY CAREFUL WITH IT,
SO YOU SHOULD NEVER USE IT
WITHOUT AN ADULT.

Taviss carefully adds droplets of lye to the purple ink on the paper, and the ink turns green.

[Taviss gasping]

Taviss says, OH, WHOA! IT'S GREEN!

She watches the green lye spread into the purple ink.

Taviss says, WHOA! IT'S LIKE A LIME GREEN.

Jason says, IT IS A LIME GREEN.

Taviss says, I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT THIS INK IS DOING.

Jason says, YEAH, ISN'T IT AMAZING HOW MANY COLOURS ARE IN THERE? THERE'S ONE FINAL STEP, THOUGH.

Taviss asks, WHAT'S THAT?

Jason says, WE NEED TO BOTTLE OUR INK.
SO THE REASON
THAT WE WANT TO BOTTLE OUR INK
IS SO THAT THIS WHOLE DAY
WE SPENT IN THE FOREST FORAGING,
FINDING LIVING INKS,
WILL STAY IN THAT BOTTLE
AND IT WILL BE ALIVE,
AND IT'LL BE LIKE
A MEMORY OF THE DAY.

Taviss pours a small beaker of grape ink into a bottle using a funnel.

Jason says, BUT I THINK IT NEEDS A NAME.

Taviss looks thoughtful.

Taviss says, GRAPERIA.

Jason says, GRAPERIA. I LOVE IT.

He writes Graperia on a label that reads, 2019 Mobile Ink Factory.

Taviss narrates, YEP. WE MADE THIS.

Jason says, I THINK IT MAKES IT, LIKE, EXTRA SPECIAL.

Taviss says, I THINK IT MAKES IT EXTRA SPECIAL TOO.

Jason nods.

[Gentle music plays]

An aerial view shows the highway bridge above the lush forest.

Taviss narrates, FROM PARKING LOTS
TO DEEP IN THE FOREST,
THERE'S COLOUR TO BE FOUND
ALL AROUND US!

In the forest, Jason and Taviss forage for grapes.

Taviss narrates, BY FORAGING THE PIGMENTS OF OUR NATURAL WORLD…

A bee stands on a Canadian Goldenrod.

[Buzzing]

Taviss continues, WITH A LITTLE BIT OF SCIENCE
AND A LOT OF CURIOSITY,
YOU CAN MAKE INK
THAT IS TRULY ALIVE
AND SERIOUSLY BEAUTIFUL!

At the table, Taviss admires her ink artwork.

Taviss says, THE SECRET IS OUT: THE FOREST IS FULL OF COLOUR!

[Uplifting music plays]
