[Thudding]
The skeleton of a T-rex stomps toward the driveway between Dex and Kayla’s house.
[Intense music plays]
[T-rex roaring]
[Thudding]
[T-rex snarling]
In Kayla’s garage, Dex and Kayla stand behind Kayla’s gem-cleaning table and stare at the T-rex. Kayla holds a sledgehammer. Dex wears his blue T-shirt with a green and yellow strip and beige vest. Kayla wears a pink gem T-shirt.
Kayla says, WE’RE JUST IMAGINING THIS, RIGHT?
The T-rex steps closer to the garage.
[Thudding]
Kayla desperately asks, RIGHT?
Dex says, ISH.
Kayla grips the hammer tight.
[T-rex snarling]
The T-rex pokes its large head into the garage. Kayla climbs the work table against the back wall and presses the garage door button.
[T-rex snarling]
The garage door starts to slowly close. Kayla pushes Dex in front of her. The T-rex snaps its jaw under the closing door.
[Jaw snapping]
[T-rex roaring]
Dex closes his eyes. The T-rex pulls its head away, and the garage door closes.
[T-rex snarling]
Dex looks relieved.
[Dex sighing]
Kayla slowly says, THAT WAS AWESOME!
She grins.
Dex says, A LITTLE SCARY, TOO, THOUGH.
Kayla says, TERRIFYING, BUT AWESOME!
[T-rex roaring]
Dex and Kayla look at the T-rex through the windows on the garage door.
[T-rex snarling]
The T-rex walks away.
Kayla says, THE T-REX IS LEAVING.
She looks at Dex.
Kayla asks, SO, NOW WHAT?
Dex sniffs the air.
[Sniffing]
Dex asks, DO YOU SMELL THAT?
Kayla says, WHATEVER IT IS, IT SMELLS GOOD.
Dex nods.
He says, COME ON.
Dex and Kayla leave. At a table in Dex’s house, Dex’s dad uncovers a cooked turkey. He wears a black and blue plaid shirt over a peach-coloured T-shirt.
[Pan clanging]
Dex’s Dad asks, SHOULD I DRIVE THIS OVER TO HER IN CASE SHE GETS HUNGRY?
Dex’s mom walks over to the table. She wears a green dress with a brown belt.
She says, AN EIGHT-HOUR DRIVE?
Dex’s mom looks at the turkey.
She says, I'LL DO IT.
[Door opening and closing]
Dex and Kayla run up the stairs by the door.
[Giggling]
Dex and Kayla face Dex’s parents. Kayla wears Dana’s dino backpack on her back.
Dex’s dad says, KAYLA?
Dex’s mom says, HELLO.
Kayla says, HI.
She glances at the turkey.
[Kayla gasping]
Kayla says, NICE TURKEY. LOOKS DELICIOUS.
Dex’s dad says, THANK YOU!
He glances at Dex’s mom.
Dex’s dad says, NO ONE EVER NOTICES.
Dex says, WE NEED IT FOR SCIENCE.
His mom and dad raise their eyebrows.
Dex says, AND MAYBE A TURKEY SANDWICH AFTER.
Dex’s mom asks, IS THAT DANA'S BACKPACK?
Dex says, SHE'S LETTING HER BORROW IT.
His parents share a smile.
Dex says, LET THE DINO SURGERY BEGIN!
[Cheerful music plays]
Dex closes window curtains.
[Curtain hooks clicking]
Kayla turns on a lamp.
[Lamp switch clicking]
At the kitchen counter, Dex holds his hand out over the turkey on a cutting board.
Dex says, FORK.
His mom puts a fork in his hand. Dex sticks the fork in the turkey.
Dex’s dad asks, NOTICE THE MOISTNESS?
Kayla nods. Dex remains focused on the turkey.
Dex says, KNIFE.
His mom says, HM. NICE TRY.
She picks up a knife.
She asks, WHERE DO YOU WANT ME TO CUT?
Dex says, RIGHT HERE.
He waves his hand over one of the turkey’s legs. Dex’s mom slices through the meat with the knife. She pulls the leg away from the rest of the turkey.
[Gentle music plays]
Dex says, JUST WHAT I EXPECTED! THE SKIN ISN'T TIGHT OVER THE BONES. THERE'S MUSCLE AND FAT.
Kayla asks, SO?
She eats a piece of turkey.
Kayla says, AND IT IS MOIST!
Dex’s dad smiles.
Dex says, SO, BIRDS CAME FROM DINOSAURS. IF BIRDS LIKE THIS TURKEY HAVE FAT, THEN T-REXES MUST HAVE FAT TOO.
Dex’s mom and dad nod.
Kayla says, BUT WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MUSCLE AND FAT? AND DO YOU HAVE ANY CRANBERRY SAUCE?
Dex’s dad says, YES. I'D RECOMMEND GRAVY, BUT I CAN ANSWER THAT. I WORK AT A HOSPITAL.
Dex looks at his dad.
Dex’s dad says, YOUR HEART IS A MUSCLE, BUT IT NEEDS FAT TO WORK. FAT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT PROTECTS YOUR ORGANS AND STORES ENERGY.
Dex’s dad takes a bowl of cranberry sauce out of the fridge and offers it to Dex’s mom.
Dex’s dad asks, YOU WANT SOME?
Dex’s mom says, I'VE STORED ENOUGH ENERGY FOR TODAY.
She smiles and passes the bowl to Kayla.
Dex says, STORES ENERGY?
His dad says, YEAH. TO USE LATER. SO, LET'S JUST SAY YOU MISS A MEAL OR TWO. YOUR BODY CAN USE ITS FAT STORES FOR ENERGY UNTIL YOU CAN EAT AGAIN.
Kayla dips a piece of turkey in the cranberry sauce.
She says, SO, HOW DO WE SOLVE OUR EXPERIMENT?
Dex says, WE HAVE TO LURE A BIGGER DINO OVER TO GET THE T-REX BACK.
His mom says, SOUNDS HARD.
Dex says, UNLESS WE BECAME THAT DINO.
Kayla asks, AND HOW EXACTLY DO WE DO THAT?
Dex says, DAD, WE NEED TO COMBINE OUR BACKPACKS.
His dad says, CRAFTING CHALLENGE! I'LL GO GET MY SEWING KIT. YOU WANT TO COME?
Dex’s dad lays his hand on Dex’s mom’s shoulder.
Dex’s mom says, OOH, YEAH!
She leaves with Dex’s dad.
Dex says, IT'S DREADNOUGHTUS TIME!
[Intense music plays]
[Cymbal crashing]
Kayla says, HUH?
Dex says, I SAY THAT WHENEVER I CHANGE INTO A DINO. WHEN I'M IN A DINOSAUR COSTUME, OTHER DINOS THINK THAT I'M THAT DINOSAUR.
Kayla says, SHOULDN'T WE SAY IT TOGETHER, THEN, IF WE'RE BOTH BECOMING IT?
Dex nods and says, GOOD POINT.
Together, Dex and Kayla say, IT'S DREADNOUGHTUS TIME!
[Intense music plays]
In Dex’s bedroom, Dex lays his dino backpack on the floor. Kayla kneels beside him with Dana’s dino backpack and furrows her brow. Dex looks at Kayla.
Kayla says, WHAT?
Dex says, JUST COPY ME. IT'S EASY.
He picks up his bag and lays it on the floor again.
Kayla says, OKAY. JUST REMEMBER THAT I'VE NEVER TRANSFORMED INTO A DINOSAUR BEFORE.
Dex says, YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE IT!
Kayla lays the dino backpack on the floor beside Dex’s.
[Magical music plays]
Dex opens his bag and pulls out a knitted red and yellow Dreadnoughtus dinosaur head hat with a long neck. Kayla frowns.
Kayla says, HOLD ON. HOW DID THAT FIT INTO THAT?
She points from the dinosaur hat to the backpack.
Dex says, MAGICAL, RIGHT?
Kayla says, MORE LIKE IMPOSSIBLE.
Dex says, IF SCIENTISTS THOUGHT THINGS WERE IMPOSSIBLE, THEN THEY NEVER WOULD'VE TRIED GOING INTO SPACE, OR DEEP UNDERWATER, OR TRAVELLING THROUGH TIME.
Kayla says, WE CAN'T TRAVEL THROUGH TIME.
Dex says, YET. AND UNTIL THEN, WE GET TO USE OUR IMAGINATION TO IMAGINE HOW DINOSAURS LIVED.
Dex picks up his bag and sits on the bed. Kayla takes a seat beside him.
Dex says, LIKE WERE TRICERATOPS GOOD PARENTS?
He pulls a knitted Triceratops hat out of the bag and hands it to Kayla.
[Gentle roaring]
Dex and Kayla look out a window. An adult Triceratops and a young Triceratops walk down the street.
[Roaring]
Dex says, OR WHAT DID TSINTAOSAURUS USE THE CREST ON THEIR HEADS FOR?
He takes another knitted hat out of his bag and passes it to Kayla. Kayla looks out the window at a Tsintaosaurus walking down the street. The dinosaur has a horn-like crest on its head and a long tail.
[Roaring]
Dex says, OR WHO WOULD WIN THE FIGHT BETWEEN TWO MEGARAPTORS?
He passes two Megaraptor hats from his bag to Kayla. Dex and Kayla look outside at two Megaraptors snapping at each other in the nearby park.
[Roaring and snarling]
Kayla looks amazed.
She says, OR THREE MEGARAPTORS!
Dex says, OOH! GOOD IDEA! BY BECOMING DINOSAURS, WE GET TO SEE HOW DIFFERENT DINOS WILL REACT TO US.
Kayla shoves the pile of dinosaur heads back in Dex’s arms and crouches beside her dino backpack.
Kayla says, YES! IT'S DREADNOUGHTUS TIME.
Dex puts the dinosaur heads on the bed. Kayla searches her bag.
Kayla says, WAIT. MINE DOESN'T HAVE A DREADNOUGHTUS HEAD.
Dex says, REMEMBER WHEN I SAID WE NEED TO COMBINE OUR BACKPACKS?
Kayla looks at Dex with a crease in her brow. Outside, Dex and Kayla walk out of the garage in a two-person dinosaur costume made of square pieces of sparkly orange foam fabric. Dex wears his red and yellow Dreadnoughtus hat. As the back legs of the dinosaur, Kayla holds onto Dex’s backpack and bends at the waist.
Kayla asks, SEE ANYTHING?
Dex says, NOT YET.
He looks around the neighbourhood. Dex stumbles down the driveway.
Dex says, SLOW DOWN.
Kayla says, SPEED UP!
[Dex grumbling]
Kayla says, NEXT TIME,
I GET TO BE THE FRONT!
Dex says, OKAY. FINE.
He leads Kayla down the street. Across the road, the T-rex skeleton appears.
[Dramatic music plays]
[T-rex snarling]
In the park, lush trees line a path.
[Gentle music plays]
Kayla says, I NEED A BREAK.
AND WHY DO YOU LIKE DINOSAURS
SO MUCH?
Kayla walks beside Dex.
Dex asks, WHY DO YOU LIKE ROCKS SO MUCH?
Kayla says, BECAUSE THEY'RE SUPER ANCIENT. OUR WHOLE PLANET IS MADE OF MILLIONS OF ROCKY ASTEROIDS SLAMMED INTO EACH OTHER. WITHOUT ROCKS, THERE WOULD BE NO EARTH, NO DINOSAURS, NO US.
Dex rolls his eyes.
He says, GOOD ANSWER.
Kayla asks, SO, WHY DO YOU LIKE DINOSAURS?
Dex says, BECAUSE THERE'S SO MUCH STILL TO LEARN ABOUT THEM. AND BY LOOKING FOR CLUES THEY LEFT BEHIND IN THE GROUND AND DOING DINO EXPERIMENTS, WE CAN HELP FIGURE OUT WHO THEY WERE AND HOW THEY LIVED.
Kayla says, GOOD ANSWER.
Her smile slowly drops.
[Dramatic music plays]
Kayla and Dex look around.
Dex says, SOUNDS LIKE WE FOUND OUR T-REX!
He and Kayla look up.
Kayla says, OR SHE FOUND US!
[Thudding]
The T-rex skeleton walks toward Dex and Kayla.
Dex says, WHOA!
[Kayla gasping]
[T-rex roaring]
The T-rex swings its tail.
[T-rex snarling]
Kayla asks, NOW WHAT DO WE DO?!
Dex screams, RUN!
He runs onto the grass. Still connected by the two-person dinosaur costume, Kayla quickly follows.
Kayla yells, I THOUGHT SO!
The T-rex snaps its jaws.
Kayla yelps, WHOA!
[T-rex roaring]
[Dex and Kayla screaming]
Kayla says, RUN FASTER!
Dex says, I'M TRYING!
IT'S NOT EASY IN THIS THING!
The T-rex follows Dex and Kayla past a playground.
[Dex and Kayla screaming]
Dex and Kayla sprint past a swing set.
[T-rex roaring]
Dex says, OKAY. ON THE COUNT OF THREE, YOU GO RIGHT. I'LL GO LEFT. READY? ONE, TWO…
Dex and Kayla run onto a basketball court. The T-rex snaps at the fabric connecting Dex and Kayla.
[Snapping]
[Dex and Kayla screaming]
The fabric rips.
[T-rex roaring]
Dex and Kayla run in different directions and then behind the T-rex. The T-rex steps onto the basketball court and turns around to face Dex and Kayla.
[T-rex roaring]
Kayla says, NOW WHAT?
Dex says, I HADN'T ACTUALLY THOUGHT THAT FAR.
Kayla says, WHAT?!
[T-rex roaring]
Dex and Kayla flinch.
Dex says, JUST GIVE ME A SECOND.
He closes his eyes.
Dex says, OKAY. SO, ANIMALS HAVE FAT BECAUSE IF THEY MISS A MEAL, THEY DON'T GO HUNGRY. THEY JUST USE THE ENERGY STORED IN THEIR FAT.
Kayla says, UM, DEX?
The T-rex walks toward Dex and Kayla.
[T-rex snarling]
Dex says, WHOA.
[Dex panting]
[T-rex roaring]
Kayla says, I’M ABOUT TO BECOME A TASTY T-REX SNACK OVER HERE!
Dex looks at the T-rex.
He says, WHICH MEANS THEY SOMETIMES MISS A MEAL, WHICH MEANS...
[T-rex snarling and roaring]
Dex says, ...THEY DON'T ALWAYS CATCH THEIR PREY!
[T-rex roaring]
The T-rex steps back and turns away from Dex and Kayla.
[T-rex roaring]
A Dreadnoughtus stares back at the T-rex.
[Dreadnoughtus roaring]
[Both roaring]
The T-rex steps toward the Dreadnoughtus. The Dreadnoughtus turns and swings its long tail at the T-rex. The Dreadnoughtus knocks the T-rex to the ground.
[Dex gasping]
[T-rex bones rattling]
[T-rex roaring]
Dex looks shocked. Kayla smiles.
[Kayla sighing]
Dex says, T-REXES NEED FAT BECAUSE THEY DON'T ALWAYS CATCH THEIR FOOD, WHICH MEANS THEY NEED ENERGY BETWEEN MEALS.
[Growling]
[Inspirational music plays]
Dex and Kayla watch the T-rex rise. As it gets up, muscles, fat and skin appear over the bones.
Dex says, I WAS RIGHT.
Kayla says, I KIND OF LIKED IT BETTER WHEN IT WAS A BONE ROCK T-REX.
Dex shrugs.
[Roaring]
A T-rex steps out from behind a tree. The Dreadnoughtus takes a few steps back, away from the T-rexes.
Kayla says, ANOTHER T-REX!?
Dex says, T-REXES MUST HAVE HUNTED TOGETHER TO TAKE DOWN BIGGER PREY.
[T-rexes snarling]
The Dreadnoughtus takes another step back.
Dex says, TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE, ESPECIALLY IF BOTH HAVE ROWS OF SUPER SHARP TEETH.
Kayla says, DINO EXPERIMENT COMPLETE.
Dex says, UH, I USUALLY SAY THAT.
Kayla says, IF WE'RE GOING TO SOLVE DINO EXPERIMENTS TOGETHER, THEN I SHOULD GET TO SAY IT HALF THE TIME.
Dex smiles.
He says, DEAL.
Kayla smiles.
Dex says, AND IT'S ALMOST COMPLETE.
He pulls Kayla’s rock out of his pocket and runs onto the basketball court.
Kayla shouts, WHERE ARE YOU GOING? AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH MY ROCK?
Dex places the rock in the path of a T-rex and crouches beside it. The T-rex steps toward the rock.
[T-rexes snarling]
Kayla yells, DEX!
She covers her eyes with her hands. The T-rex steps on the rock.
[T-rex snarling]
Dex stands up. Kayla uncovers her eyes.
[Kayla sighing in relief]
Dex picks up the rock.
He says, COME ON! I'VE GOT A SURPRISE FOR YOU!
He runs back toward his and Kaya’s houses. Kayla runs after him.
Kayla says, THAT'S GREAT, BUT CAN WE DE-DINO FIRST?
In Kayla’s garage, Dex opens Kayla’s rock, revealing the crystals inside.
Dex says, I TOLD YOU I'D HELP YOU CRACK OPEN YOUR ROCK.
Kayla says, I KNEW IT! IT'S GEODE.
Dex says, A G-WHAT?
Kayla says, GEODE. IT'S A TYPE OF ROCK THAT HAS CRYSTALS INSIDE. THIS ONE HAS PINK AMETHYST. SEE HOW THE ROCK PROTECTS THE CRYSTAL?
The amethyst crystal shimmers.
Dex says, KIND OF LIKE HOW ROCKS PROTECT DINOSAUR BONES SO WE CAN UNCOVER THEM.
Kayla nods.
Dex says, ROCKS REALLY ARE COOL.
Kayla smiles.
Dex whispers, JUST NOT AS COOL AS DINOSAURS.
[Kayla laughing quietly]
Kayla says, WE'LL SEE. SO, WHAT'S OUR NEXT DINO EXPERIMENT?
Dex says, LET'S CHOOSE IT TOGETHER.
Dex and Kayla open the Dino Field Guide.
[Pages flapping]
Kayla points to a drawing of a red and yellow dinosaur with horns.
Dex says, THIS IS ONE OF DAN'S EXPERIMENTS.
Kayla asks, WHO'S DAN?
She flips the page to a long-necked purple and yellow dinosaur.
Dex says, HIS MOM MADE THIS DINO FIELD GUIDE.
Kayla says, OH. THIS ONE LOOKS FUN.
Dex says, I ACTUALLY JUST ENDED THIS ONE. WAIT TILL YOU SEE THIS ONE.
Kayla says, WHOA.
A T-rex walks out from between two townhouses.
[T-rex roaring]

Dex says, OKAY.
[Intense music plays]
