A child says, WHEE!

t.v.o. kids and Sinking Ship Entertainment Original.

[Giggling]

[Intense music plays]

The skeleton of a T-rex spreads its jaw.

[T-rex roaring]

Wearing knitted dinosaur hats, Dex and Kayla roar like dinosaurs. Dex has short black hair, and Kayla has long black hair and glasses.

[Dex and Kayla roaring]

Dex and Kayla chase after different dinosaurs. In a park, they run from a dinosaur. In a community pool, a dinosaur jumps in the water.

[Dinosaur grunting]

[Splashing]

Green and purple crystals form the title among dinosaur fossils. Dex reads the title.

Dex says, DINO DEX!

Created by J.J. Johnson. Written Kirsten Brass.

[Whooshing]

Dex reads the episode title.

He says, A DINO TAIL!

Directed by J.J. Johnson.

[Imitated dinosaur snarling]

On the neighbourhood park basketball court, Dex and Kayla wear dinosaur costumes. Dex wears a knitted Dreadnoughtus head and a tail. Kayla wears a Megaraptor hat, tail and claw mitts.

[Kayla snarling like a megaraptor]

Dex says, STAY BACK, MEGA APTOR!

Kayla says, YOU CANNOT DEFEAT ME, SILLY DREADNOUGHTUS.

Dex says, TAIL SWIPE!

He turns and hits Kayla with his homemade tail.

[Dex grunting]

Kayla says, OW!

She stumbles away from Dex and clutches her chest.

Dex asks, ARE YOU OKAY?

Kayla says, THEY DON'T CALL ME THE LARGE THIEF FOR NOTHING!

She runs toward Dex, and Dex hits her with his tail.

[Both grunting]

Kayla stumbles back.

[Dex laughing]

Dex says, NOTHING CAN GET PAST THE DREADNOUGHTUS'S AWESOME TAIL DEFENSE!

[Dinosaur snarling]

Kayla looks past Dex in fear.

Kayla asks, WHAT ABOUT THAT?

Dex says, NICE TRY.

[Dinosaur roaring]

Dex’s eyes widen. He slowly turns around to face a Megaraptor.

[Megaraptor snorting]

Dex shouts, AH! A REAL MEGARAPTOR!

The Megaraptor snaps at Dex’s Dreadnoughtus tail.

[Snapping]

Dex says, WHOA! HELP ME!

Kayla asks, ISN'T THIS PART OF YOUR DINO EXPERIMENT?

Dex angrily says, HELP. ME.

Kayla says, OKAY, FINE.

She takes Dex’s hands and pulls him away from the Megaraptor.

[Grunting]

[Snarling]

Kayla stumbles back. The Megaraptor pulls Dex’s tail off his dino backpack and then spits it out.

[Megaraptor grunting]

The Megaraptor leaves.

Kayla asks, WHAT WERE YOU SAYING ABOUT NOTHING GETTING PAST YOUR AWESOME TAIL DEFENSE?

[Car horn honking]

Dex says, SAVED BY THE BIG SISTER!

He grabs the Dreadnoughtus tail and runs toward his house with Kayla. In the driveway, a girl wearing her long black hair in a ponytail, a light purple T-shirt and black jeans opens the back seat of her car.

Dex says, SAARA!

Saara, the black-haired girl, says, HEY, BUDDY.

She pulls a bag out of the car. Dex and Kayla run up in their dinosaur costumes.

Dex asks, ARE YOU HERE FOR THE WHOLE WEEKEND?

Saara says, YEAH, I'VE GOT A TON OF LAUNDRY TO DO.

She passes Dex the bag and frowns at his Dreadnoughtus tail.

Saara says, HEY, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR TAIL?

Dex says, MEGARAPTOR.

Saara says, OH. IS THAT A NEW ONE?

Kayla says, YEP, IT'S WHAT I AM. YOU CAN TELL BY MY MASSIVE CLAWS AND SHARP TEETH.

[Kayla hissing]

Dex says, A REAL MEGARAPTOR BIT OFF MY TAIL.

Kayla says, AND WITHOUT HIS TAIL DEFENSE, GAME OVER.

Saara says, AH, NOT FOR ALL ANIMALS.

She opens her trunk.

Kayla asks, WHAT DO YOU MEAN?

She and Dex look at a blanket covering a large box-shaped item in the trunk.

Dex asks, WHAT'S IN THERE?

Saara says, SOMETHING THAT MIGHT SHOW YOU A THING OR TWO ABOUT TAILS.

[Dex and Kayla giggling excitedly]

Saara says, I WILL LET YOU SEE IF...

She pulls a laundry basket full of clothes out of the trunk.

She says, …YOU HELP ME TAKE IN MY LAUNDRY.

Dex and Kayla share a look. Kayla nods.

Dex and Kayla say, DEAL.

Saara says, THANK YOU!

She passes Kayla the basket. She and Dex carry Saara’s laundry toward the house.

[Both grunting]

Dex says, THIS IS HEAVY.

Kayla says, YUP.

[Dex laughing]

Inside, Saara loads clothes from the basket into the washing machine. In her and Dana’s bedroom, Kayla and Dex sit on either side of the blanket-covered item from the trunk.

Kayla asks, WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS?

Dex says, I HOPE IT'S AN ANIMAL!

Kayla says, YEAH!

Saara walks into the room.

She asks, ARE YOU READY TO HAVE YOUR MINDS BLOWN?

Dex says, YES!

Kayla ALWAYS.

Saara says, ALL RIGHT, THEN MEET...

She pulls the blanket off the item, revealing a lizard in an enclosure.

She says, LITTLE SKINKY!

Dex says, HI THERE.

With a crease in her brow, Kayla asks, DID YOU SAY "SKINKY" OR "STINKY"?

Saara says, SKINKY. HE'S A BLUE-TONGUED SKINK. I'M STUDYING HIM FOR MY BIOLOGY CLASS. WANT TO HELP ME WATCH HIM?

Dex eagerly says, OBVIOUSLY.

Kayla says, YEAH, NO.

Dex asks, YOU DON'T LIKE LIZARDS?

Kayla says, I LIKE ROCKS. ROCKS DON'T MOVE OR STICK OUT THEIR TONGUES.

Little Skinky sticks out his forked tongue.

[Little Skinky hissing]

Kayla asks, WHY DOES IT DO THAT?

Saara says, THAT'S HOW HE SMELLS.

Layla asks, IS HE SMELLING ME?

Saara says, MAYBE.

Kayla looks nervous.

[Little Skinky hissing]

Saara says, OH! I'VE GOT TO REFILL HIS WATER. I'LL BE BACK IN JUST A SEC.

She takes Little Skinky’s water dish out of the enclosure and leaves.

Dex says, HEY, KAYLA, DID YOU KNOW THAT DINOSAURS ARE ACTUALLY RELATED TO LIZARDS LIKE THE BLUE SKINK? THEY'RE BOTH REPTILES.

Kayla says, YOU TOLD ME DINOSAURS WERE BIRDS.

Dex says, THEY ARE. BIRDS ARE REPTILES, TOO. IT'S EASIER IF I SHOW YOU.

Kayla looks at Dex with skepticism. Dex unrolls a poster from the wall.

He says, DANA AND I MADE THIS. IT'S A DINO FAMILY TREE. IT SHOWS HOW ALL REPTILES ARE RELATED.

Dex lays the family tree out on the floor. Saara walks back into the room.

Saara says, I DREW THAT ONE, WITH THE SPARKLES.

Sparkles shine on a lizard on the family tree.

Dex says, THAT'S HYLONOMOUS, THE VERY FIRST REPTILE TO APPEAR ON EARTH OVER 315 MILLION YEARS AGO!

Saara kneels behind Little Skinky’s enclosure between Kayla and Dex.

Dex asks, SEE WHO ELSE IS IN HIS FAMILY?

Kayla looks at animals on the family tree.

She says, TURTLES, LIZARDS, SNAKES, CROCODILES, PLESIOSAURS, DINOSAUR, PTEROSAURS, AND BIRDS.

Different birds on the family tree include a blue jay, a hummingbird, a penguin, an owl, and a flamingo.

Dex says, DING, DING, DING!

Saara holds up the water dish.

She asks, WHO WANTS TO PUT THE WATER IN?

Dex says, ME!

He raises his hand.

Kayla says, NOT IT!

She puts her finger on her nose. Saara passes Dex the water dish. The dish slips out of Dex’s hands and into Little Skinky’s enclosure.

[Cracking]

Dex says, OH!

[Kayla gasping]

Little Skinky is missing the end of his tail.

Dex says, I SCARED SKINKY!

Kayla says, YOU BROKE THE END OF ITS TAIL OFF, DEX!

Dex says, NO, I DIDN'T! DID I, SAARA?

Saara shakes her head and says, NO, HE'S NOT BROKEN. THIS IS ACTUALLY WHAT I WANTED TO SHOW YOU ABOUT REPTILE TAILS. SOME LIZARDS, WHEN THEY ARE GROWING, CAN DROP THEIR TAIL AND RE-GROW THEM, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO LITTLE SKINKY.

Dex says, FASCINATING!

Kayla says, GROSS.

Saara says, YEAH, IT'S KIND OF BOTH. BUT THEY CAN DROP THEIR TAILS AS A WAY TO DISTRACT PREDATORS.

Dex says, WHAT A BRILLIANT TAIL DEFENSE. WAIT, IF LIZARDS CAN DROP AND RE-GROW THEIR TAILS, AND DINOSAURS ARE RELATED TO LIZARDS...

Kayla says, I KNOW WHERE THIS IS GOING.

Dex says, MAYBE DINOS CAN, TOO! COME ON, KAYLA! WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK, SAARA.

He gets up with his dino backpack.

Dex says, IT'S MEGARAPTOR TIME!

Kayla grabs her dino backpack and follows Dex out of the room. Saara looks at Little Skinky.

Saara says, AWW, ARE YOU COLD, LITTLE SKINKY? DO YOU WANT YOUR HEAT LAMP?

[Little Skinky grunting]

On the basketball court, Dex and Kayla wear Megaraptor costumes with knitted hats, tails and claw mitts. A Dreadnoughtus walks across the court. It looks back at Dex and Kayla.

[Dreadnoughtus braying]

Dex says, DINO EXPERIMENT 10-06. CAN DINOS DROP AND RE-GROW THEIR TAILS?

Kayla asks, YOU REALLY THINK SHE'S GOING TO DROP THAT?

She points toward the Dreadnoughtus’ long tail.

[Dreadnoughtus snorting]

Dex says, ONLY SCIENCE WILL TELL. WE NEED TO SCARE THE DREADNOUGHTUS INTO DROPPING HER TAIL. READY TO ROAR?

Kayla says, NOT REALLY.

Dex bends his knees and raises his knitted claws.

[Dex roaring]

The Dreadnoughtus swings its tail toward Dex and Kayla.

Dex says, DUCK!

He and Kayla duck under the Dreadnoughtus’ tail.

[Dreadnoughtus grunting]

Kayla says, NOW JUMP!

The Dreadnoughtus swings its tail. Dex and Kayla jump over it.

[Dex and Kayla grunting]

Kayla says, OKAY, THIS IS PRETTY FUN.

Dex says, I TOLD YOU SO.

Kayla says, NOW DUCK!

She and Dex dodge another swipe of the Dreadnoughtus’ tail.

Kayla says, BUT I STILL DON'T THINK THAT TAIL IS GOING TO DROP.

Dex looks at the Dreadnoughtus thoughtfully.

He asks, BUT WHAT IF IT COULD?

[Dreadnoughtus roaring]

The Dreadnoughtus raises its tail.

[Kayla shrieking]

Kayla runs away from the Dreadnoughtus’ tail. Half of the Dreadnoughtus’ tail falls off like a lizard’s. Kayla looks around.

Kayla shouts, DEX!

Dex stands up from behind the Dreadnoughtus’ tail.

He says, THAT WAS AWESOME!

[Dreadnoughtus braying]

The Dreadnoughtus falls onto the basketball court.

[Dreadnoughtus bellowing]

[Thudding]

Dex and Kayla say, WHOA!

[Dreadnoughtus bellowing]

Kayla says, NOT FOR THE DREADNOUGHTUS.

Dex says, WITHOUT HER TAIL FOR BALANCE, SHE CAN'T GET AWAY FROM PREDATORS. WHICH MEANS...

Kayla says, DREADNOUGHTUS CAN'T DROP THEIR TAILS.

[Dreadnoughtus braying]

Dex says, BUT MAYBE ANOTHER DINO ON THE FAMILY TREE COULD.

He and Kayla run toward the house. The fallen piece of the Dreadnoughtus’ tail reconnects.

Dex says, WOAH!

The Dreadnoughtus stands up.

[Dreadnoughtus braying]

In her bedroom, Saara turns on a heat lamp above Little Skinky’s enclosure.

Saara says, AW, THAT'S BETTER, ISN'T IT?

[Little Skinky trilling]

Dex and Kayla run in, still wearing their Megaraptor costumes.

[Kayla panting]

Kayla asks, WHAT'S HE DOING NOW? ISN'T IT HOT ENOUGH IN HERE?

She kneels on one side of Little Skinky’s enclosure with Dex on the other.

Saara says, UH, NO, SOME LIZARDS ARE ECTOTHERMS, OR COLD-BLOODED, SO THEY NEED THE SUN OR A HEAT LAMP LIKE THIS ONE TO WARM UP. BUT ENDOTHERMS, OR WARM-BLOODED ANIMALS, LIKE US, CAN MAKE HEAT FOR OURSELVES.

Kayla nods and says, HMM.

Dex glances at the dinosaur family tree.

He says, THE DREADNOUGHTUS ARE ENDOTHERMS. MAYBE A DINO THAT'S AN ECTOTHERM LIKE THE SKINK CAN DROP ITS TAIL!

Kayla says, BUT ARE THERE ECTOTHERM DINOS?

[Dex scoffing]

Dex says, ARE THERE ECTOTHERM DINOS.

He shakes his head and looks at Kayla.

Dex says, OH, YOU'RE BEING SERIOUS.

Kayla nods.

Dex says, OF COURSE THERE ARE. LIKE...

He points to a dinosaur on the family tree that looks like a lizard with spikes on its back and a club-like tail.

Dex says, THIS ONE.

On the basketball court, a real lizard-like dinosaur with spikes on its back swings its club-like tail.

[Dinosaur snarling]

Dex and Kayla creep toward the dinosaur still in their Megaraptor costumes.

Dex says, THE ANKYLOSAURUS IS AN ARMOURED DINO WITH A MASSIVE TAIL-CLUBBING
DEFENSE.

Kayla asks, YOU THINK HE'S GOING TO DROP THAT THING?

Dex says, WOULDN'T IT BE COOL?

Kayla nods and says, HMM.

Dex asks, READY?

Kayla nods.

Dex counts down, THREE, TWO, ONE.

He and Kayla roar like dinosaurs.

[Both roaring]

The Ankylosaurus swings its tail.

Dex warns, LOOK OUT!

He and Kayla duck and dodge the Ankylosaurus’s tail.

Kayla says, IT DIDN'T WORK.

Dex says, YOU GO THAT WAY.

He and Kayla split up. They walk around the Ankylosaurus in opposite directions.

[Dex and Kayla roaring]

Dex yelps, WOAH!

Kayla ducks under the Ankylosaurus’ tail.

[Ankylosaurus snarling]

[Dex and Kayla roaring]

The Ankylosaurus swings its tail at Dex and Kayla.

[Dex yelping]

[Ankylosaurus roaring]

[Kayla yelping]

Kayla says, IT'S NOT COMING OFF.

Dex says, BUT WHAT IF IT COULD?

[Ankylosaurus snorting]

The club on the Ankylosaurus’ tail breaks off and is thrown toward Dex and Kayla.

[Ankylosaurus roaring]

Dex and Kayla duck.

Dex yelps, WHOA!

The Ankylosaurus’s club hits the pole of the basketball net.

Kayla says, WHOA. THAT WAS TERRIFYING.

Dex says, SO IS THAT!

A Megaraptor walks onto the court.

[Megaraptor snarling]

The Ankylosaurus backs away from the Megaraptor.

[Ankylosaurus braying]

Dex says, ANKYLOSAURUS CAN'T DEFEND HIMSELF WITHOUT HIS TAIL. WHICH MEANS...

Kayla says, ANKYLOSAURUS CAN'T DROP THEIR TAILS. EVEN IF IT WOULD LOOK COOL
IF THEY COULD.

The Megaraptor attacks the Ankylosaurus. The Megaraptor chomps into the side of the Ankylosaurus.

[Megaraptor snarling]

The Ankylosaurus’ tail club flies over Dex and Kayla.

[Yelping]

Dex and Kayla duck. The club attaches itself to the Ankylosaurus’ tail, and the Ankylosaurus hits the Megaraptor with it.

[Megaraptor]

The Ankylosaurus knocks the Megaraptor away with its club tail.

[Ankylosaurus roaring]

Dex says, YES! BUT MAYBE ANOTHER DINO ON THE FAMILY TREE COULD.

Kayla nods. Back in Saara’s room, Saara puts food in Little Skinky’s enclosure.

Dex says, WITHOUT ITS TAIL, THE ANKYLOSAURUS ALMOST BECAME LUNCH.

Kayla asks, IS THAT ITS LUNCH?

Saara says, YEP, HE LOVES BLUEBERRIES.

Kayla says, AWW.

Little Skinky eats a blueberry.

[Little Skinky trilling]

Kayla says, OH, THAT'S KIND OF CUTE.

Saara says, YEAH, HE ALSO EATS BEETLES, MOTHS, AND SPIDERS.

Kayla frowns and says, LESS CUTE.

Saara puts the mesh top back on Little Skinky’s enclosure.

Dex says, SO, ANKYLOSAURUS NEEDS A TAIL FOR DEFENSE. DREADNOUGHTUS NEEDS IT FOR BALANCE.

Saara says, I WONDER IF THERE'S SOMETHING PREHISTORIC THAT DOESN'T NEED ITS TAIL FOR DEFENSE OR BALANCE.

She turns on Little Skinky’s heat lamp. Dex nods thoughtfully.

Saara says, MAYBE SOMETHING THAT LOOKS A LITTLE LIKE LITTLE SKINKY OVER HERE.

Kayla looks at Little Skinky and says, HMM.

She glances at the dinosaur family tree.

[Kayla gasping]

Kayla looks at a dinosaur that looks like a crocodile with spikes on its back.

She says, HER LEGS LOOK LIKE SKINKY'S!

Dex says, YOU'RE RIGHT! THE SARCOSUCHUS! MAYBE DINOS COULDN'T DROP THEIR TAILS, BUT PREHISTORIC REPTILES COULD! DINO EXPERIMENT REVISED. COME ON, KAYLA.

Dex and Kayla leave. Saara smiles and watches them walk out the door. She leans over Little Skinky’s enclosure.

Saara says, HOW'S THAT LUNCH GOING, SKINKY?

Little Skinky munches on a blueberry.

[Little Skinky munching]

On the basketball court, a large Sarcosuchus spreads its jaw.

[Sarcosuchus roaring]

Dex says, SARCOSUCHUS IS AN ANCIENT CROCODILE, BUT THE GROWN-UPS ARE WAY BIGGER.

Dex and Kayla slowly creep toward the Sarcosuchus.

Dex says, THIS ONE MUST BE A KID.

Kayla says, STILL LOOKS PRETTY BIG AND SCARY TO ME.

Dex asks, READY?

Kayla nods.

Dex counts down, THREE, TWO. ONE.

The Sarcosuchus snaps its jaw.

[Snapping]

[Dex and Kayla roaring]

The Sarcosuchus turns toward Dex and Kayla.

[Sarcosuchus snarling]

[Dex and Kayla yelping]

Kayla says, WHOA!

Dex says, CAREFUL! SARCOSUCHUS HAVE SHARP TEETH POINTING BACKWARDS SO THEIR PREY CAN'T GET AWAY.

He and Kayla back away from the Sarcosuchus.

Kayla says, NOW YOU TELL ME?

Dex shrugs and smiles sheepishly.

[Kayla sighing]

Kayla says, I DON'T THINK SHE'S GOING TO DROP HER TAIL. SHE'S NOT SCARED OF US.

[Snarling]

Kayla says, MAYBE SHE'S SCARED OF HIM!

A Megaraptor runs up to the Sarcosuchus and bites off its tail.

[Megaraptor snarling]

[Sarcosuchus squealing]

The Megaraptor runs away with the end of the Sarcosuchus’ tail.

Kayla says, HE BIT HER TAIL!

Dex says, RIGHT OFF! THAT WAS INCREDIBLE.

Kayla says, NOT SO MUCH FOR THE KID SARCO.

The Sarcosuchus wags the remainder of its tail.

[Sarcosuchus hissing]

Another Sarcosuchus walks by with a short tail.

Kayla says, HUH, WHY ARE ALL OF THEIR TAILS DIFFERENT SIZES?

Dex says, BECAUSE THEY MUST HAVE LOST THEIR TAILS, TOO! BUT THEY GROW BACK! DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?

Kayla says, NOT REALLY!

Dex says, WE'VE GOT TO MAKE OUR CONCLUSIONS!

Kayla smiles.

Dex says, COME ON.

Back in Saara’s room, Dex writes in his dino field guide.

He says, DINO EXPERIMENT 10-06 COMPLETE. DINOSAURS CAN'T DROP
THEIR TAILS, AND THE KID SARCOSUCHUS DIDN'T DROP HER TAIL. BUT SHE CAN RE-GROW IT, JUST LIKE LITTLE SKINKY.

Saara holds Little Skinky in her lap.

[Little Skinky trilling]

Kayla says, YEAH, YOU'RE PRETTY COOL, SKINKY.

Saara says, HEY, DO YOU WANT TO HOLD HIM?

Kayla looks hesitant.

She says, SURE, I GUESS.

Saara passes Little Skinky to Kayla.

Kayla says, OH, HE FEELS WEIRD AND SQUIRMY.

[Saara quietly laughing]

Kayla says, BUT I KIND OF WANT ONE NOW.

[Dinosaur braying in the distance]

Dex looks outside at a Dreadnoughtus in the park. An Ankylosaurus walks down the street, and a Sarcosuchus walks on the sidewalk.

[Dinosaurs snorting]
