A narrator says, MEET AD'RIA. SHE'S A MULTI-TALENTED CARNIVAL PRINCESS, AUTHOR, AND ACROBATIC DANCER.

Ad’ria waves. She wears a white T-shirt with “Kiddies Club” on the front. Her long, curly black hair falls over her shoulders. Ad’ria stands beside a table with packaged “Kiddies Club” T-shirts. In a bedroom, Ad’ria stands beside a bunk bed. She jumps and changes into a red leotard with a jewelled neckline and belt. Ad’ria wears light blue, yellow, and red wings. Ad’ria’s book, “Adria The Carnival Princess,” appears. On the cover, an illustrated girl wears a blue flower headpiece and dress and holds a glowing wand.

[Chiming]

The narrator says SHE LOVES TO DANCE SOCA AND CELEBRATE HER CANADIAN-TRINIDADIAN ROOTS.

Ad’ria dances in her red jewelled leotard. Other dancers dressed in black surround her in a circle. They crouch and wave different national flags.

Ad’ria says, KEEP GOING!

The narrator says, AND SHE JUST WROTE HER FIRST BOOK.

Ad’ria says, HI. I'M AD'RIA, AND I'M EIGHT YEARS OLD. I LIVE IN THE COMMUNITY OF MALVERN IN SCARBOROUGH, ONTARIO.

Apartment buildings tower over the Scarborough Civic Centre. In animation, the Canadian flag and the flag of Trinidad and Tobago flutter on each side of the Civic Centre.

[Slide whistles]

Ad’ria says, I'M A PROUD CANADIAN TRINIDADIAN
MY MOM, GRANDMA,
AND MY DAD ARE FROM TRINIDAD,
AND MY SISTER IS
CANADIAN LIKE ME.

In a fenced backyard, Ad’ria’s mom wears a pink, orange, and white vertically striped blouse. Her long black hair is tightly braided. Ad’ria’s grandma has short black hair with an orange streak. She wears a black T-shirt. Ad’ria’s dad has short dark brown hair, a moustache, and a beard. He wears a blue and white horizontally striped shirt. Ad’ria’s younger sister wears a pink bow in her tightly braided black hair. She wears a pink T-shirt. Ad’ria’s family waves.

[Chiming, door clicks]

Ad’ria opens a door labelled “The Girls Room.” She stands beside the bunk bed.

Ad’ria says, WELCOME TO MY ROOM, ALSO KNOWN AS MY PALACE.

In animation, a palace appears.

[Slide whistle]

Ad’ria gestures at the top bunk, where her name is spelled on the wall, and drawings hang beside the bed.

Ad’ria says, THIS IS MY WALL. THIS IS MY SISTER'S BED AND MY BED'S UP TOP HERE.

Sunny gives a thumbs up.

[Chiming, upbeat music continues]

Ad’ria says, MY TROPHIES HERE.

Ad’ria points to a shelf. A plaque on a trophy reads, “Toronto Carnival. Second Place. 2023 Female Individual Under 10.”

Ad’ria says, THAT ONE I WON FOR PLAYING MAS IN THE TORONTO CARNIVAL. THAT ONE I WON FOR NOVA STARS.

Ad’ria holds two shiny medals on white strips of fabric. Ad’ria points to medals on closet doors.

[Medals jangling]

Ad’ria says, THESE ARE MY MEDALS. I WON THESE ONES FOR DANCE, AND I ALSO WON CARNIVAL QUEEN IN TRINIDAD.

Video footage shows Ad’ria dancing in a green, orange, white and purple costume. She uses handles to move the sides of the costume. A crowd watches from the sidelines. A cut-out shape shows the shape of Trinidad and Tobago.

Ad’ria narrates, TRINIDAD IS WHERE THE FIRST CARNIVAL TOOK PLACE. CARNIVAL IS A BIG OUTDOOR
CELEBRATION WHERE WE HONOUR OUR CARIBBEAN CULTURE AND OUR FREEDOM.

Ad’ria says, I HAVE MY BOOKS THERE AND I HAVE MY TWO MAGAZINE COVERS.

Ad’ria points to a bookshelf. She points to two framed magazine covers on the wall.

Ad’ria says, SEE? I'M A COVER GIRL. IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT TOO.

Ad’ria picks up a long-eared pink stuffed bunny.

Ad’ria says, AND DON'T FORGET MY STUFFED BUNNY THAT I GOT WHEN I WAS FIRST BORN. SHE'S MY FAVOURITE.

Ad’ria hugs her stuffed bunny.

[Chiming]

In the bedroom, Ad’ria throws a globe beach ball in the air. She turns it and points to Canada.

Ad’ria says, HERE IS SCARBOROUGH, ONTARIO. THESE ARE THE BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO.

A map shows the location of Scarborough, Ontario and connects it to Trinidad and Tobago with a red dotted line. A thick forest covers part of an island. A road runs parallel to a beach.

[Chiming, upbeat music continues]

Ad’ria says, HERE IS THE TRINI FLAG.

The animated flag of Trinidad and Tobago appears. The fluttering red flag has a black diagonal line with white lines on each side of the black line.

[Popping, slide whistle]

Ad’ria says, THE COLOURS ARE RED, BLACK, AND WHITE.
THE RED REPRESENTS FIRE,
THE BLACK REPRESENTS EARTH,
AND THE WHITE REPRESENTS WATER.

In the bedroom, Ad’ria says, MY TRINI FAMILY REALLY INSPIRES ME TO CELEBRATE MY CULTURE EVERY YEAR AT KIDDIES CARNIVAL. IT'S A SPECIAL PARADE FOR KIDS TO SHOW OFF THEIR CARIBBEAN CULTURE IN THE MOST FUN WAYS.

Photographs show Ad’ria dressed for Kiddies Carnival. In the first photograph, she wears a blue and purple dress and a spiralling skirt. The skirt extends above her head in a circle around her body. The second photograph shows Ad’ria wearing a yellow bodice and a purple skirt. A feather plume of orange, lime green, and purple lines rises behind her.

Ad’ria says, WE PLAY MAS TO CELEBRATE OUR FREEDOM AND OUR CULTURE. MAS IS SHORT FOR MASQUERADE.

The word “Mas” changes to “Masquerade.”

Ad’ria says, WE PUT ON MAKEUP AND SOMETIMES WE DRESS UP IN THESE BIG COSTUMES.

In video footage, Ad’ria sits in a chair as an adult applies makeup to her face. In the bedroom, Ad’ria jumps and changes into the costume with the red, yellow, and light blue wings.

[Chiming]

Ad’ria says, IT TAKES ME THE WHOLE YEAR TO BUILD IT.
SO, ME AND MY MOM GO
TO THE MAS CAMP TO MAKE IT,
THEN ON THE BIG DAY
I GO ON STAGE
AND DANCE TO THE MUSIC.

Video footage shows Ad’ria onstage, dancing in a red dress. Her dress appears as part of the skirt of a tall mannequin attached to Ad’ria’s back. The mannequin is twice as tall as Ad’ria. In additional video footage, she dances wearing the blue and purple costume.

Ad’ria says, WE HAD A BLAST PLAYING MAS.

[Chiming]

Ad’ria stands in a dance studio wearing a red leotard. A group of adults and children, all wearing black, stand behind her.

Ad’ria says, TODAY WE'RE AT MWENDO DANCE SCHOOL.

Ad’ria holds the flag of Trinidad and Tobago.

Ad’ria explains, NOW, WE'RE GOING TO
SHOW YOU DIFFERENT WAYS
TO MOVE YOUR FLAG,
THAT'S ALSO CALLED A RAG,
WITH MY FRIENDS OF COURSE.WE'RE GONNA TAKE OUR RAGS
AND PUT IT IN ONE OF OUR HAND.
EVERY TIME WE JUMP WE'RE GONNA
LET THE RAG JUMP WITH US. HERE WE GO.

Everyone jumps, holding their flag over their heads.

[Soca music plays]

Ad’ria says, AND JUMP. KEEP JUMPING!

Ad’ria says, NOW, WE'RE GONNA GET DOWN LOW.

Ad’ria crouches close to the floor.

Ad’ria says, BEND DOWN AS LOW AS WE CAN, WE'RE GOING TO GIVE A LITTLE SHOULDER. WE'RE GONNA MOVE
OUR RAGS WITH OUR SHOULDER. AND GO.

Everyone moves their shoulders as they move their flags.

Sunny dances.

[Sunny laughing, chiming]

Ad’ria says, KEEP GOING.

Ad’ria leads the other dancers as they lift their flags. Everyone smiles as they dance and wave their flags. Ad’ria poses on one leg in the circle of dancers.

[Chiming]

Ad’ria wears her “Kiddies Club” T-shirt.

[Upbeat music plays]

Ad’ria narrates, TODAY IS AN EXCITING DAY. I'M SHOWCASING MY BOOK AT THE BLACK PARENTS BOOK FAIR.

Ad’ria walks to a table with her book and “Kiddies Club” T-shirts. She bags a book for a customer.

[Background chatter]

Ad’ria says, I LOVE CARNIVAL SO MUCH THAT I EVEN WROTE A BOOK ABOUT IT. MY MOM HELPED ME WRITE
A BOOK ABOUT A LITTLE GIRL FACING HER FEARS FOR HER FIRST CARNIVAL AND ENDS UP WINNING A TROPHY.

Sunny smiles and puts on a crown.

Ad’ria says, GUESS WHAT? THE STORY'S ABOUT ME.

DEEP FRIED DOUGH THAT WE MAKE
IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO.

Ad’ria pulls a pholourie in half.

Sunny appears over a pan of pholourie.

[Slide whistle, sniffing]

Sunny says, MM!

Ad’ria and her mother sit in a restaurant with an aluminum pan of pholourie in front of them.

Ad’ria says, MY MOM ORDERS IT FROM MY FAVOURITE TRINI RESTAURANT. PHOLOURIE IS MADE
WITH FLOUR, YEAST, BAKING POWDER, BROWN SUGAR, TURMERIC, AND SALT.

As Ad’ria names the ingredients, animated ingredients appear by the pan.

[Popping]

Ad’ria says, THEN THEY FRY IT UP IN LOTS OF OIL.

Pholourie deep fries in oil.

[Oil sizzles]

Ad’ria says, THAT'S IT! SOFT, FLUFFY, AND YUM.

In an animation, a blue gift box wiggles. The box opens, and Sunny rises and blows into a party horn. Yellow text reads, “Sunny’s Surprise!”

[Upbeat music plays, party horn toots]

In her bedroom, Ad’ria sits in her sister’s bed and reads her book. Her dad approaches and sits beside her.

Ad’ria’s dad says, AD'RIA, I HAVE A SURPRISE FOR YOU.

YOU HAVE DONE SO MANY THINGS
AT THE AGE OF EIGHT YEARS OLD,
AND MOM AND DAD HAVE SOMETHING
HERE THAT WILL MOTIVATE YOU.

On a tablet screen, Erica London, a Canadian Trinidadian author, stands in a library. Behind her is a banner for “Colour Their World” that features two book covers. Erica wears a pink blazer over a white shirt. Her long black hair is highlighted light brown at the tips.

Erica says, HI, AD'RIA. I'M ERICA LONDON, CANADIAN-TRINIDADIAN CHILDREN'S AUTHOR AND FOUNDER OF
COLOUR THEIR WORLD. BEING A CHILDREN'S AUTHOR IS SUCH A FULFILLING CAREER. IT GIVES ME AN OPPORTUNITY
TO SPEAK TO CHILDREN JUST LIKE YOURSELF FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD. I WROTE MISSING YOU, AND I ALMOST GAVE UP JUST BEFORE I WROTE THIS BOOK, BECAUSE I HAD LOST A RELATIVE OF MINE DUE TO ILLNESS. NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS AND READ AS MANY BOOKS AS YOU CAN. YOU NEVER KNOW WHOSE LIFE YOU WOULD BE TOUCHING.

In her bedroom, Ad’ria says, WOW! I'M ALWAYS GONNA REMEMBER TO FOLLOW MY DREAMS.

[Chiming]

Ad’ria wears her red leotard with red, yellow, and light blue wings.

Ad’ria says, HOPE YOU ENJOYED LEARNING ABOUT MY TRINI CULTURE TODAY.

Flashbacks show Ad’ria dancing at the dance school, standing at her table at the book fair, and smiling as she eats pholourie.

Ad’ria says, WE DANCED TO SOCA MUSIC, WE SHOWCASED MY BOOK, AND WE ATE YUMMY PHOLOURIE. BYE!
