A tween with long, straight black hair holds the flag of Ethiopia. She smiles and waves it.

A narrator says, MEET NOVELLA, BUT YOU CAN CALL HER "NOVI." SHE'S SUPER SMART AND CURIOUS ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND HER.

The long-haired girl, Novi, dances and spins. A photograph shows Novi posing with a girl and a woman. Video footage shows Novi having a snowball fight with another child.

[Whooshing]

The narrator says, SHE USED TO LIVE IN ETHIOPIA BUT NOW CALLS CANADA HER HOME AWAY FROM HOME.

A woman with long black hair gives Novi a tablet.

The narrator says, WAIT 'TIL YOU SEE WHO HAS A SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR HER. ARE YOU READY?

Novi and a woman perform a martial arts kick.

They say, KI!

The narrator says, LET'S GO!

Sunny, an animated sun, waves. Photographs of children appear on a colourful brick wall. Text above Sunny reads, “T.V.O. Kids presents.”

Title: Sunny's Quest.

[Upbeat theme song plays, slide whistle, needle scratching on record]

Novi pops out from behind a column.

[Slide whistle]

Novi says, HI. I'M NOVI. I'M 11 YEARS OLD, AND I LIVE IN TORONTO, ONTARIO. I LIVE IN THE AREA THAT SOME CALL NORTH YORK. IT'S ONE OF THE SIX CITIES THAT JOINED TOGETHER TO MAKE UP THE MEGACITY OF TORONTO.

Aerial footage shows the city of Toronto and the neighbourhood of North York. Grey clouds drift over the C.N. Tower in downtown Toronto. On a tablet screen, a man with short black hair wears a white dress shirt and yellow necktie.

Novi says, THAT IS MY DAD, WHO IS STILL IN ETHIOPIA.

In a living room, the black-haired woman, Novi’s mom, waves. Her grandma wears a head covering and has Novi’s youngest sister on her lap. Novi’s toddler sister has curly dark brown hair and wears a black and white striped shirt. Novi’s younger sister has her hair in black braids and wears a pale blue shirt.

Novi says, THAT IS MY MOM. THAT IS MY GRANDMA, AND MY TWO LITTLE SISTERS.

Video footage shows Novi having a snowball fight with another child.

[Upbeat music plays, children shouting]

Novi says, WE MOVED FROM ETHIOPIA, IN AFRICA, TO CANADA THREE YEARS AGO. IT WAS A BIG CHANGE.

In the living room, Novi’s mom throws her a globe beach ball. Novi points to Canada on the globe.

[Slide whistle]

Novi says, WE MOVED TO CANADA, RIGHT HERE. ALL THE WAY FROM ETHIOPIA, OVER HERE IN AFRICA.

An animated map shows the location of Toronto, Ontario. A red dotted line leads to Ethiopia in Africa.

[Chiming, dinging]

Novi narrates, THIS IS WHERE WE ARE FROM. IT'S IN THE NORTHEASTERN PART, SOMETIMES KNOWN AS "THE HORN OF AFRICA." CAN YOU SEE THE HORN?

A photograph of an animal horn appears beside the Horn of Africa on the map.

[Chiming]

Aerial video footage shows cities and towns in Ethiopia.

[Upbeat music plays]

Novi says, ETHIOPIA IS THE OLDEST INDEPENDENT COUNTRY IN AFRICA. THAT MEANS WE'VE ALMOST ALWAYS ENJOYED OUR FREEDOM.

Novi holds up her Ethiopian flag. The flag's horizontal green, yellow, and red stripes are adorned with a blue circle in the centre and a yellow star.

[Popping]

Novi says, THIS IS THE FLAG OF ETHIOPIA. GREEN IS FOR WORK AND DEVELOPMENTS. YELLOW IS FOR JUSTICE. RED IS FOR THE SACRIFICES FOR OUR FREEDOM. BLUE IS FOR PEACE. THE STAR IS ABOUT OUR UNITY, AND THE RAYS REPRESENT OUR BRIGHT FUTURE. COME ON. I WANNA SHOW SOME MORE COOL STUFF IN MY ROOM.

In her room, Novi leans against the footboard of her bed. Schoolbooks, a notebook, a blue backpack, and a pencil case are scattered on the bed.

[Upbeat music plays quietly]

Novi says, THIS IS MY BED AND I LIKE DOING MY HOMEWORK HERE SOMETIMES. P.S., I ACTUALLY LIKE GOING TO SCHOOL AND DOING MY HOMEWORK. MY FAVOURITE CLASSES ARE SOCIAL STUDIES AND MATH. I WANNA BE A MATHEMATICIAN WHEN I GROW UP.

Novi gestures at three belts neatly knotted on top of her dresser. Beside the belts is a silver karate trophy.

Novi says, THESE ARE ALL MY KARATE BELTS SO FAR. FIRST LEVEL WAS WHITE. NEXT IS YELLOW. NOW, I HAVE TO PASS MY ORANGE BELT TO GO ONTO GREEN. I GOT FIRST PLACE FOR KATA IN KARATE.

Sunny appears with stars in her eyes.

[Slide whistle, Sunny gasping]

Novi says, OKAY, SO WHAT'S "KATA"?

Video footage shows Novi demonstrating her karate moves.

[Slide whistle]

Novi says, "KATA" IS A JAPANESE WORD THAT MEANS "FORM." YOU TAKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF MARTIAL ARTS MOVES AND PUT THEM ALL TOGETHER. IT'S ALMOST LIKE A DANCE.

The video footage ends.

[Slide whistle]

Novi says, KATA'S HELPED ME PRACTISE ALL MY MOVEMENTS. IT FEELS REALLY GOOD TO WIN AN AWARD IN IT. HEY, LET'S CHECK OUT MY CLOSET. I'M SO PROUD OF ALL THE TRADITIONAL CLOTHES I CAN WEAR. I REMEMBER HOME, AND THEY ARE SO PRETTY.

Novi appears in a white dress with an embroidered design near the hem of the skirt. Sunny appears and gives an okay sign.

[Chiming, slide whistle]

Novi says, I LOVE THIS DRESS. IT'S CALLED "ETIRTIR." WE WEAR THIS DRESS TO WEDDINGS AND HOLIDAYS. I LOVE HOW WHITE IT IS. WHITE SYMBOLIZES HAPPINESS, BEAUTY, AND PURITY.

Novi jumps, and she and her younger sister appear in burgundy dresses with a floral pattern.

[Chiming]

Novi says, THESE ARE OUR EVERYDAY CLOTHES, CALLED "CHIFFON." IT COMES FROM THE TIGRAY PEOPLE, BUT OTHER TRIBES, LIKE US, WEAR IT TOO.

Novi and her younger sister jump, and they and their mother appear in white embroidered dresses. They dance in Novi’s room.

[Chiming]

Novi says, THIS DRESS IS CALLED A "TILF." THIS DRESS IS WORN IN THE AMHARA REGION WHERE WE ARE FROM. WE SPEAK AMHARIC. IT IS ONE OF THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGES IN ETHIOPIA. THE OTHER OFFICIAL LANGUAGES ARE AFAR, OROMO, SOMALI, AND TIGRIGNA. I LOVE ALL THE DRESSES THAT COME FROM MY ETHIOPIAN HERITAGE.

Everyone jumps, and Novi appears alone, wearing a T-shirt and cut-off jeans.

[Chiming]

Novi says, I'M HUNGRY. COME ON. LET'S GO GET SOMETHING TO EAT.

[Upbeat music plays]

Novi says, I'M SO EXCITED TO GO TO MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT, LALIBELA. COME ON. COME ALONG WITH ME.

Novi gets into the backseat of a white car beside her younger sister. Their mom drives on the highway.

[Engine humming]

Novi and her younger sister say, GOING TO LALIBELA.

In the restaurant, Novi, her mom, and her younger sister sit at a table. A waiter puts a woven basket on the table and removes the cover.

Novi says, YOU MADE IT JUST IN TIME FOR MY FAVOURITE DISH. THIS IS CALLED "FIR FIR." WE USUALLY HAVE IT FOR BREAKFAST. I LOVE IT ANY TIME.

Novi eats the fir-fir, torn pieces of injera, a spongy flatbread.

Novi says, I LOVE SO MANY DISHES FROM ETHIOPIA, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO "ENKUTATASH." THAT'S AN ETHIOPIAN NEW YEAR'S CELEBRATION THAT IS EVERY SEPTEMBER.

An animated calendar shows the month of September.

Video footage shows a tabletop filled with different foods. On a stove, someone stirs a pot filled with Doro Wat.

[Whooshing, upbeat music continues quietly]

Novi says, THE FOOD DURING ENKUTATASH IS AMAZING! FRIENDS AND FAMILY COME TOGETHER TO EAT. THE MOST POPULAR HOLIDAY DISH IS CALLED "DORO WAT." YOU EAT IT WITH INJERA. IT'S LIKE A CHICKEN STEW, AND IT TAKES A REALLY LONG TIME TO MAKE. DURING ENKUTATASH, WE GO HOUSE TO HOUSE SINGING A SONG CALLED "ABEBAYEHOSH."

Video footage shows Novi and her family dancing and singing. She and her sisters wear their chiffon.

[Singing in Amharic, clapping]

Text beneath an animated yellow flower reads, “Adey Abeba.”

[Chiming]

Novi says, THIS SONG IS ABOUT THE ADEY ABEBA FLOWER THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY WE CELEBRATE NEW YEAR'S DURING SEPTEMBER. THAT'S WHEN THE FLOWERS AND SUNNY, GOOD WEATHER COMES AGAIN.

Video footage shows people gathered around a bonfire. Some of the people dance and clap their hands.

[Flames crackling, rhythmic clapping, singing]

Novi says, I LOVE GETTING TOGETHER WITH MY COMMUNITY TO LIGHT A "CHIBO," WHICH IS A BONFIRE. WE SING, DANCE, AND GET TO PLAY THE KEBERO DRUM AROUND THE FIRE, AND WE WISH EVERYONE GOOD LUCK FOR THE NEW YEAR. SOMETIMES, WHEN YOU ARE AT A MARKET, YOU CAN GET A TRADITIONAL NIKISAT DONE. IT'S KIND OF LIKE A REALLY ANCIENT ETHIOPIAN TATTOO.

A photograph shows Novi with a black sun outline on her forehead and lines on her neck and chin. Photographs show women with tattoos on their foreheads.

[Chiming]

Novi says, A LONG, LONG TIME AGO, SKILLED WOMEN, KNOWN AS "NEKASH" WOULD PUT THESE REALLY COOL DESIGNS ON YOUR FACE, NECK, GUMS, AND HANDS. I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE NIKISAT OVER MY NECK AND FACE.

In the restaurant, Novi says, I CAN'T WAIT TO GET IT DONE.

Behind Novi, her mom shakes her head.

[Slide whistle, mom clearing throat]

Novi says, YEAH, MOM SAYS I HAVE TO BE A LOT OLDER TO GET IT DONE, LIKE 30.

An animated blue present box wiggles. The present opens, and Sunny rises and blows into a party horn. Yellow text reads, “Sunny’s Surprise!”

[Upbeat music plays, party horn toots]

At the restaurant table, Novi’s mom holds the tablet. Novi’s younger sister sits across from them and watches her mom give Novi the tablet.

[Upbeat music plays]

Novi’s mom says, VELLA, WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU THAT YOU ADJUSTED THIS NEW PLACE, YOU ACHIEVE A LOT OF THINGS UNTIL NOW, AND I HOPE THIS VIDEO WILL GONNA GIVE YOU YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE.

Valeria Adelson, an actuary, appears on the tablet screen. She has short dark brown hair with blonde tips and wears a white and yellow striped sweater.

[Upbeat music continues]

Valerie says, HI, NOVELLA. I AM VALERIE ADELSON, AND I'M AN ACTUARY. BEING AN ACTUARY IS REALLY FUN. I GET TO SOLVE REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS USING MATHEMATICS, STATISTICS, PROBABILITY, FINANCE, AND OTHER BUSINESS SKILLS. ONE THING THAT ALWAYS ENJOY DOING IS SOLVING PROBLEMS. I LIKE VERY COMPLICATED PROBLEMS. THAT'S WHERE I GET TO USE MY MATHEMATICAL...MY MATHEMATICS MIND TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS. ALLOW YOURSELF TO DREAM BIG. DREAMS ARE ACHIEVABLE. AND IT'S OFTEN THE LITTLE STEPS WE TAKE TOWARDS OUR DREAMS THAT MAKE IT HAPPEN. AND NEVER LET ANYBODY DISCOURAGE YOU. IF YOU HAVE A DREAM IN YOUR HEART, IT'S THERE FOR A REASON, SO TRUST YOURSELF.

The video on the tablet ends.

Novi says, OH, WOW. THANK YOU.

Novi stands outside by the column.

[Chiming]

Novi says, WOW, WHAT A GREAT DAY WE HAD.

Flashbacks show Novi dancing with her family, singing, and eating fir-fir at her favourite restaurant.

Novi says, WE DANCED. WE SANG. AND WE ATE. I HOPE YOU GOT A KICK OUT OF MY NEW CANADIAN-ETHIOPIAN LIFE.

Novi performs karate kicks.

[Whooshing]

Novi says, BYE FOR NOW.

Sunny and Novi wave goodbye.
