In a living room, Lalia sits on a sofa with a man with short black hair, a woman with short dark brown hair, and a younger girl with braided black hair. The black-haired man gives Lalia a tablet.

The narrator says, WAIT TILL YOU SEE WHO HAS A MESSAGE FOR HER. LOOKS LIKE WE'RE READY. ARE YOU? LET'S GO.

In a studio, Lalia high-fives a woman with long brown hair.

An animated map shows the locations of Winnipeg in Manitoba, Mali, and Senegal. Aerial footage shows a beach.

[Chiming, upbeat music continues]

Lalia says, AND JUST A LITTLE BIT TO THE WEST IS SENEGAL. IT’S FAMOUS FOR THEIR BEAUTIFUL BEACHES. FRENCH IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE THERE.

Sunny appears and gives a thumbs-up.

[Slide whistle]

Lalia says, LET'S CHECK OUT THE FLAGS OF THOSE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRIES.

Lalia points at a fluttering green, gold, and red striped flag.

[Popping, gentle music plays]

Lalia says, THIS IS MY MALIAN FLAG. IT’S GREEN GOLD AND RED. GREEN IS FOR THE FERTILITY OF THE LAND. GOLD IS PURITY AND THE MINERAL WEALTH. RED IS FOR THE BLOOD OF OUR PEOPLE WHO FELL FOR THEIR INDEPENDENCE FROM THE FRENCH.

Animated silhouetted people charge along the bottom of the flag. Some carry flags.

[Shouting]

Lalia points at a green, gold, and red flag with a green star in the centre.

[Popping]

Lalia says, THIS IS MY SENEGALESE FLAG. THEY LOOK SIMILAR, RIGHT? BECAUSE MALI AND SENEGAL WERE PART OF THE SAME FEDERATION. THE COLORS HAVE THE SAME MEANING, BUT THERE'S A STAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SENEGALESE FLAG. COME SEE MY SENEGALESE MALIAN, CANADIAN LIFE. LETS GO!

In her bedroom, Lalia sits cross-legged on her bed. Two purple unicorn chairs sit on the floor at the foot of her bed.

Lalia says, WELCOME TO MY ROOM. LOOK AT THOSE PAINTINGS I MADE.

Lalia gestures at two purple, green, blue, and red canvases on the wall.

[Upbeat music continues]

Lalia says, TODAY WE'RE THE HAIR SALON WITH NADIA. SHE'S GOING TO TEACH ME A NEW HAIRSTYLE.

Lalia watches Nadia style the hair on a practice doll.

Lalia narrates, HAIR WAS A SPECIAL SYMBOL OF IDENTITY IN AFRICA. BY LOOKING AT SOMEONE'S BRAIDS OR LOCKS, YOU CAN TELL THEIR TRIBE OR THE STORY OF THEIR FAMILY. NADIA IS SHOWING ME HOW TO BRAID THEIR TRADITIONAL FULANI HAIRSTYLE. THE FULANI BRAIDS ARE MOSTLY FOUND IN MALI. THAT'S WHERE THE FULANI PEOPLE ARE.

Photographs show models posing with the Fulani Braids.

[Background chatter]

Lalia narrates, BUT SO MANY PEOPLE WEAR IT NOW AND IT'S THE PRIDE OF THE FULANI PEOPLE. THERE'S A BRAID IN THE MIDDLE. IT GOES FROM THE FRONT TO THE BACK. THEN THERE'S SMALLER BRAIDS ON THE SIDE. AND THE MOST FUN PART IS DECORATING THEM. DOESN'T IT LOOK BEAUTIFUL?

Sunny appears and pats a sunbeam.

[Slide whistle, chiming]

Lalia says, THANK YOU NADIA.

Nadia says, YOU ARE WELCOME.

Lalia says, ONE VERY IMPORTANT SURVIVAL SKILL IS KNOWING HOW TO DO DELICIOUS MALIAN FOOD. BUT I DIDN'T LEARN THIS WITH THE SCOUTS. COME WITH ME AND I’LL SHOW YOU.

In a grocery store, Lalia’s little sister pushes a grocery cart. Lalia walks beside the cart with a hand on it, and their mom walks behind them. Lalia selects meat and vegetables from shelves.

Lalia narrates, I'M LUCKY TO LIVE WITH THE BEST CHEF IN TOWN. MY MOM. SHE BROUGHT ME TO DINO’S TO FIND ALL THE INGREDIENTS TO MAKE MAFÉ. I LOVE MAFÉ.

[Upbeat music plays]

Lalia says, YOU HAVE TO USE PEANUT BUTTER BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT MAFÉ IS. PARSLEY AND GARLIC. YOU'LL ALSO NEED SOME TOMATO PASTE. FISH SAUCE AND SQUASH. LOTS OF SPICES, AS WELL AS AN ONION.

Lalia stirs the ingredients in the pot.

Lalia says, I'M ALSO MAKING BISSAP.

A photograph shows a dark purple drink with ice and a white straw.

Lalia says, IN MALI THEY CALL IT DABILENI. BISSAP IS A SWEET HIBISCUS DRINK. THE HIBISCUS PLANT IS KNOWN FOR ITS VIBRANT COLOUR, AND IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH.

Lalia washes dried hibiscus leaves and puts them in a bowl. She adds mint leaves and pours boiling water into the bowl.

[Water bubbling]

Lalia says, YOU TAKE THE DRY HIBISCUS FLOWER, WASH AND ADD MINT LEAVES AND BOILING WATER TO MAKE THE DRINK.

She puts a lid on the bowl and pushes down the sides. Sunny appears and sniffs.

[Clicking, slide whistle, sniffing]

Lalia says, SHARING FOOD WITH MY FAMILY MAKES ME SO HAPPY. THEY MAKE ME PROUD OF MY SENEGALESE AND MALIAN TRADITION.

An animated blue present box wiggles. The present opens, and Sunny rises and blows into a party horn. Yellow text reads, “Sunny’s Surprise!”

[Upbeat music plays, party horn toots]

ONE THING THAT I WILL SAY TO YOU IS NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAM. KEEP FOCUSING ON YOURSELF. AND GIRL YOU GOING TO GET IT. OKAY.

The video message ends.

Lalia says, THANK YOU. I FIND YOUR MESSAGE TOUCHING.

[Chiming]

Lalia says, THANKS FOR WATCHING MALIAN, SENEGALESE, CANADIAN LIFE.

A flashback shows Lalia rollerskating with Jill, braiding the hair of the practice doll, and stirring the mafé in the pot.

Lalia says, WE ROLLER SKATED, WE BRAIDED HAIR, AND WE COOKED MAFÉ.

Lalia sits at a long dining table with her family and guests.
