In the countryside, Brody walks down a path. He wears a light blue button-down shirt.
Brody narrates, I WENT TO COURTNEY'S SHOP IN ERIN, ONTARIO, TO JOIN FORCES WITH THE REAL-LIFE WELDER!
Outside a barn, Courtney welds two metal rods together. Sparks fly where her welding torch meets the metal.
[Sparks sizzling]
Courtney lifts the face covering of her welding helmet.
Brody walks up and says, THIS IS BRODY FOR COURTNEY THE WELDER?
Courtney smiles and says, THAT'S ME.
Brody says, I'M HERE TO, WELL, LEARN HOW TO WELD. WHAT DO WELDERS DO EXACTLY?
Courtney says, WELL, WE CUT AND FUSE METAL TOGETHER USING HIGH HEAT AND ELECTRICITY. WELDING'S FOUND EVERYWHERE. WE USE IT IN MANUFACTURING AND, WELL, EVEN ART.
Brody says, AND YOU GET TO DO IT WHILE WEARING A COOL SET OF CLOTHES LIKE THAT? WHERE ON EARTH CAN I GET ONE OF THOSE?
Courtney says, ABSOLUTELY. THIS IS THE BEST PART ABOUT WELDING. YOU GET TO DRESS COOL AND IT PROTECTS US AND KEEPS US SAFE. LET'S GET YOU GEARED UP.
Brody says, ALL RIGHT!
He walks into the barn with Courtney.
Inside, Courtney says, THIS IS MY SHOP, BRODY. AND THIS IS WHERE I WORK AND CREATE ALL SORTS OF ART.
Brody looks around the space full of tools and other welding equipment.
He says, ALL RIGHT.
Courtney says, AND THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE USING FOR YOUR P.P.E.
She walks up to a table with Brody.
Brody says, PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT.
Courtney smiles and reaches for an item on the table.
Courtney says, FIRST, LET'S START WITH THE JACKET.
Brody says, JACKET.
Courtney says, IT HAS LEATHER SLEEVES AND IT WILL PROTECT YOUR ARMS FROM THE SPARKS AND HEAT.
She holds a large jacket over Brody.
Brody says. ALL RIGHT.
Courtney helps Brody into the large jacket.
Brody says, AH!
Courtney says, THERE.
Brody pulls his hands out of the long sleeves.
Courtney says, WE ALSO HAVE TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR. SO, PUT THAT ON YOUR HEAD.
She passes Brody a welding cap.
Brody says, THANK YOU.
He pulls the cap over his hair.
Courtney says, SAFETY GLASSES TO PROTECT YOUR EYES.
Brody slides on a pair of safety glasses.
He says, CHECK!
Courtney says, LEATHER GLOVES TO PROTECT YOUR HANDS.
Brody puts on leather gloves.
Courtney says, AND THE BEST PART, THE WELDING HELMET TO PROTECT YOUR EYES AND FACE.
Brody says, YEAH!
Courtney puts a welding helmet with floral skeleton artwork on Brody’s head and lowers the face covering.
[Courtney briefly laughing]
Brody says, YEAH.
He lifts the face covering.
Courtney says, NOW YOU LOOK LIKE A REAL WELDER!

Title: Trading Skills.
[Gentle, upbeat music plays]
Elsewhere in the shop, Courtney walks over to a table with a piece of metal held in place over the side.
Courtney says, OKAY BRODY, WE'RE GONNA USE THIS PLASMA CUTTER HERE TO CUT THIS METAL.
Brody says, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT. I THOUGHT WELDING WAS WHERE YOU TAKE A BUNCH OF PARTS AND YOU MAKE ONE PART, NOT ONE PART INTO A BUNCH OF PARTS.
Courtney says, TRUE, BUT SOMETIMES WE NEED TO CUT THE METAL TO GET THE PROPER SHAPE.
Brody says, LIKE HOW IN ORDER TO MAKE A PUZZLE, YOU FIRST HAVE TO GET THE PIECES.
Courtney says, EXACTLY, BUT WE NEED TO CHANGE YOU INTO YOUR CUTTING P.P.E.
She holds up a blue helmet with a visor.
Brody asks, WHY IS THIS HELMET ANY DIFFERENT FROM THAT ONE?
He puts his hands on his helmet and then waves them toward the plasma-cutting visor.
Courtney says, THE WELDING HELMET'S A LITTLE DARK FOR THE PLASMA CUTTER. THIS VISOR WILL HELP YOU SEE BETTER.
Brody says, OH, ALL RIGHT.
He takes off his welding helmet.
Courtney says, I’M GONNA GIVE YOU DARKER GLASSES.
She passes Brody a pair of dark safety glasses.
Brody says, ALL RIGHT.
He puts on the glasses. Courtney gives Brody the plasma-cutting visor.
Brody says, I LOVE THIS.
Courtney says, LOOKING COOL.
Brody says, OH YEAH!
Courtney holds up a torch.
She says, OKAY BRODY, THIS IS A PLASMA TORCH. AND HOW IT WORKS IS IT USES HEAT AND ELECTRICITY TO CREATE PLASMA GAS. THE AIR BLOWS OUT THE MOLTEN METAL.
Brody looks at the torch with the plasma-cutter visor raised.
He says, REALLY COOL.
Courtney says, LET'S GET TO IT!
Brody smiles and lowers the visor. Courtney wears her own pair of dark safety glasses. She uses the plasma torch on the piece of metal. Brody watches from a few feet away.
[Loud sizzling]
Bright sparks flicker onto the floor. Courtney cuts a small piece of metal off the large piece and it drops to the floor.
[Banging]
Brody lifts his visor and says, WHOA!
Courtney says, IT'S YOUR TURN.
She passes Brody the plasma cutter.
Brody smiles and says, I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER ASK.
He nods his head forward, and the visor drops over his face.
Courtney says, OKAY BRODY, IT'S PRETTY SIMPLE. YOU'RE GOING TO PUT THE TORCH ON THE METAL.
She takes Brody’s hand and guides the torch onto the metal.
Brody says, ALL RIGHT.
Courtney says, YOU'RE GOING TO PUT YOUR HAND OVER THE SAFETY.
Brody puts his index finger over a red trigger.
Courtney says, LIFT IT UP, AND PULL THE TRIGGER.
Brody moves his fingers over a black trigger ahead of the safety.
Courtney says, WHEN YOU'RE READY, YOU'RE GOING TO PULL BACK SLOWLY. YOU GOT THIS.
Brody says, ALL RIGHT.
Courtney puts on her safety glasses. Brody pulls the trigger and sparks fly off the metal.
[Sizzling]
Brody starts to cut through the metal.
Courtney says, SLOW.
Brody slows down.
Courtney says, PERFECT! THAT SPEED ALL THE WAY.
Brody cuts halfway through the metal.
Courtney says, GOOD JOB, KIDDO!
Brody cuts a small piece of metal off the big piece.
[Clanging]
Brody lets go of the trigger.
Courtney says, HIGH-FIVE, KID.
Brody high-fives Courtney.
Brody cheers, YEAH!

Title: Trading Skills.
[Gentle, cheerful music plays]
Later, in Courtney’s shop, Courtney stands at the table with Brody.
Brody narrates, WITH THE PIECES CUT TO SIZE, IT WAS TIME TO LEARN TO WELD.
Courtney places a thin piece of metal on the table.
She says, OKAY, BRODY, WE'RE GOING TO USE THE MIG WELDER, AND WE'RE GOING TO LAY DOWN SOME BEADS.
Courtney grabs a welding torch off a box-shaped Mig Welder device.
Brody asks, WHAT DOES MIG MEAN?
Courtney says, IT STANDS FOR METAL INERT GAS. SO BASICALLY WE'RE GOING TO TAKE ELECTRICITY TO CREATE HEAT THAT'S GOING TO HEAT THE WIRE AND TURN IT INTO LIQUID METAL.
Brody looks at the welding torch closely.
Courtney says, AND THAT'S GOING TO BOND THE STEEL TOGETHER.
Brody says, COOL. LET'S DO THIS!
He and Brody lower the face coverings of their welding masks. Brody watches Courtney use the welding torch on the thin sheet of metal. Bright sparks fly off the metal.
[Sparks sizzling and popping]
Courtney slowly moves across the metal. She pulls away from the table and leaves a bright orange spot in the metal.
Brody lifts the covering on his helmet and says, WHOA! THAT WAS FIRE!
Courtney says, LET'S SEE IF YOU CAN MAKE A BEAD LIKE MINE.
She passes Brody the welding torch.
Brody says, ALL RIGHT! HERE WE GO, MIG WELDER!
He lowers the covering. Courtney pushes the thin piece of metal closer, and Brody leans over it.
[Metal scraping]
Courtney lowers her face covering and helps Brody guide the welding torch into place.
Courtney says, GO.
Light briefly flashes from the torch.
[Brief snapping]
Courtney says, KEEP PUSHING.
Brody burns into the metal with the welding torch.
[Snapping]
Courtney says, SLOW, NICE.
Sparks fly off the metal.
[Sizzling]
Brody pulls away from the table.
Courtney says, PERFECT.
She and Brody raise their coverings.
Courtney says, WOW, YOU DID AN EVEN BETTER JOB THAN ME!
Brody cheers, YES!
He pumps his fists.
Courtney says, LET'S TRY AND WELD THINGS TOGETHER NOW.
She slides two rectangular pieces of metal in front of Brody.
Courtney says, ALL RIGHT, BRODY, YOU'RE GOING TO PUT A TACK RIGHT HERE.
She lays one piece of metal flat on the table and holds the other upright down the middle of the first piece. Courtney points to the end of where the metal meets. Brody uses the torch on the spot and welds the pieces together.
[Sizzling and snapping]
Courtney says, PERFECT. NOW WELD THERE.
Brody welds the other end of the metal pieces together.
[Snapping and sizzling]
Courtney says, SLOW, CLOSER. YEAH.
Brody moves the torch's flame down the metal and makes a line.
Courtney says, GOOD JOB. ALL RIGHT, LET'S DO THE OTHER SIDE.
Brody cheers, YEAH!
He pulls his helmet down over his face.
He grunts, HMM, HMM.
Brody welds the other side of the metal.
Courtney says, THERE YOU GO.
[Sizzling and snapping]
Brody finishes welding. He and Courtney lift their coverings.
Courtney says, AWESOME!
Brody cheers, LET'S GO!
He high-gives Courtney.
Brody asks, DO WE NOW HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT TO DRY?
Courtney says, ACTUALLY NO, WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT TO COOL THOUGH. WELDING MAKES IT REALLY HOT.
Brody says, I GUESS YOU COULD SAY THIS IS A JOB “WELD” DONE?
[Courtney laughing]
Courtney says, I GUESS SO, YES.
Brody grins and pumps his fist.
[Bright music plays]
Title: Trading Skills.
[Gentle, cheerful music plays]
Outside, the sun shines brightly over Courtney’s shop.
Brody narrates, IT WAS TIME TO CHILL AND ASK SOME BURNING QUESTIONS.
He and Courtney sit at a picnic table with pink drinks and a plate of vegetables.
Brody says, THERE'S ONE THING THAT I LOVE MORE THAN PINK LEMONADE AND THAT IS A NEW TRADE. COURTNEY, HOW DID YOU LEARN YOUR WELDING WAYS?
Courtney says, WELL, MY FATHER WAS A WELDER AND HE LOVED IT SO MUCH. I WANTED TO FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTSTEPS.
Brody asks, DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL FOR WELDING?
Courtney says, YES, I DID AN APPRENTICESHIP WITH MOHAWK COLLEGE. I GOT PAID TO LEARN SO I DID THREE TIMES AT SCHOOL, BASIC, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED.
Brody says, GETTING PAID TO GO TO SCHOOL? SIGN ME UP! WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER SCHOOL?
Courtney says, AFTER SCHOOL I WENT TO WORK FULL TIME AND THEN I TOOK MY SKILLS FROM STEAM-FITTING AND WELDING AND APPLIED THEM TO METAL ART.
Brody asks, WHAT'S METAL ART?
Courtney says, WELL, I TAKE STEEL AND ATTACH IT USING MY WELDER. I MAKE ALL SORTS OF THINGS, BIRDS, ANIMALS AND SOMETIMES CHARACTERS.
Courtney is shown working on a piece of metal art with her welding torch.
[Sizzling]
Brody says, COOL! DO YOU SELL THEM?
Courtney says, YES, IT'S ACTUALLY A GREAT WAY TO MAKE SOME EXTRA MONEY.
Brody says, IT'S GREAT TO WELD YOUR WORK AND HOBBIES TOGETHER. WHAT OTHER JOBS CAN YOU FIND AS A WELDER?
Courtney says, WELDING GOES INTO SO MANY THINGS. THERE'S PIPE WELDING, AUTOMOTIVE, MANUFACTURING, IT KEEPS GOING. IT'S BASICALLY IN EVERYTHING WE USE.
Brody asks, WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A WELDER?
Courtney says, I THINK I LIKE THE DIVERSITY. I MEAN, ONE MINUTE I'M IN THE CITY WELDING AND THE NEXT MINUTE I'M AT MY HOME. THERE'S SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS THAT I CAN DO.
Brody says, I LIKE TO TOAST TO THE WELDERS THAT MAKE THIS WORK BREAK POSSIBLE.
He and Courtney pick up their glasses of pink lemonade.
Courtney says, “WELD” SAID.
Brody and Courtney tap their glasses together.
They say, CHEERS!
[Bright music plays]
Title: Trading Skills.
[Gentle, cheerful music plays]
Later, outside, Brody and Courtney wear their welding safety gear. Courtney works out of the back of a van with a metal pipe on stands and a levelling tool balanced on the metal.
Brody says, COURTNEY'S DOING A DIFFERENT TYPE OF WELDING THAT NEEDS A LOT OF CONCENTRATION. I'M GOING TO SEE IF THERE'S ANY WAY I CAN HELP.
He walks over to Courtney.
Brody says, ALRIGHT, SO I HAVE THE BLUEPRINTS.
He hands Courtney his pieces of paper.
Brody asks, WHAT KIND OF WELDING IS THIS?
Courtney says, SO THIS IS STICK WELDING AND WE'RE GOING TO USE A GENERATOR, WHICH MEANS IT CREATES ITS OWN POWER AND WE CAN DO IT ANYWHERE.
Brody asks, WHY IS IT CALLED STICK WELDING?
Courtney says, WELL, WE USE AN ELECTRODE AND IT LOOKS LIKE A STICK.
She holds up an electrode.
Brody says, WHOA!
Courtney says, SO THIS ENDS UP MAKING THE BOND BETWEEN THE TWO PIECES.
Brody asks, WHAT ABOUT THE BLUEPRINTS?
Courtney says, THE BLUEPRINTS TELL ME MY MATERIALS, MY MEASUREMENTS AND WHERE THE WELDS GO.
She points to different parts of her blueprints and prepares the electrode.
Brody narrates, COURTNEY LOADED UP HER TORCH AND SHOWED WHY SHE'S A STICK-WELDING STAR.
Courtney welds a spot on the metal pipe with her stick welder.
[Sizzling]
Courtney welds the underside of the pipe. She hammers a piece of metal into an opening.
[Hammering]
Courtney checks the level and adjusts the weld.
[Bright music plays]
Title: Trading Skills.
[Gentle, cheerful music plays]
In Courtney’s shop, Brody asks, HOW LONG HAVE HUMANS BEEN JOINING METAL TO METAL? AND WHO WERE THOSE BRAVE HUMANS? AND WHY WAS WELDING SO IMPORTANT? I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED. LET'S HAVE A LOOK TO SEE WHO FORGED THE PATHS FOR THE WELDERS OF TODAY.
Beside a “We Can Do It!” poster, Brody copies the pose in the poster and flexes his muscles.
[Brody grunting]
[Children cheering]
[Gentle music plays]
In black and white, Akeylah works at a table in a brick room, wearing protective gloves.
Brody narrates, ANCIENT TIMES, BLACKSMITHS WOULD DO FORGE WELDING.
Akeylah picks up pieces of metal.
Brody narrates, A PROCESS OF FUSING METAL BY HEATING IT UP TO RED HOT TEMPERATURES AND HAMMERING AWAY.
Akeylah hammers the metal.
[Hammering]
The metal falls off the table.
Brody narrates, YOW! IT WASN'T UNTIL THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY THAT INVENTORS DISCOVERED THAT COMBINING OXYGEN AND BURNING GAS COULD MAKE WELDING EFFICIENT, PRECISE, AND SAFE.
As an inventor, Akeylah wears glasses and a lab coat. In a laboratory, she holds up a torch.
Brody narrates, THROUGHOUT THE 20TH CENTURY IN ONTARIO, WELDERS WERE NEEDED TO HELP CONNECT SECTIONS OF THE RAILWAY TOGETHER.
Akeylah works beside a train, wearing a welding helmet and other protective gear, including coveralls and gloves.
Brody narrates, THE CONTINUOUS WELDED RAIL KEEPS TRAINS RUNNING SMOOTHLY AND SAFELY ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
In colour, Akeylah stands at a table before a world map.
Brody narrates, IN THE 21ST CENTURY, WELDING IS NEEDED FOR ALL SORTS OF TRANSPORTATION AND INNOVATION, AS WELDERS BUILD THE STRUCTURES THAT KEEP OUR WORLD MOVING.
Akeylah places a school bus, a robot, and a stuffed toy rocket ship on the table. She spins a globe.
[Cheerful music plays]
In Courtney’s shop, a welder marks a thin metal sheet with their welding torch.
[Sizzling]
Brody narrates, IT WAS TIME FOR OUR FINAL PROJECT, AND THIS TIME I HAD A THIRD GENERATION WELDER TO WORK WITH.
Courtney says, BRODY, I'D LIKE YOU TO MEET MY DAUGHTER HAYDEN.
She walks over to the welding table, and the welder, Hayden, raises the face covering of her welding mask.
Brody says, HI HAYDEN!
Junior welder Hayden smiles and smiles and weaves. She has long, wavy brown hair.
Hayden says, HI.
Courtney says, HAYDEN'S BEEN WORKING ON THE TOOLS SINCE A YOUNG AGE.
Brody says, WHOA, SO THAT MEANS THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO CUT METAL SAFELY?
Hayden says, YEP.
Brody asks, AND YOU KNOW THAT ALMOST EVERYTHING AROUND US IS WELDED?
Hayden says, YEP.
Brody asks, AND YOU KNOW WHAT MIG MEANS?
Hayden says, YEP, THAT'S METAL INERT GAS OF COURSE.
Brody says, IMPRESSIVE. THAT MEANS THAT YOU CAN HELP ME WITH OUR NEXT PROJECT.
He turns to Courtney.
Brody asks, WHAT ARE WE WELDING?
Courtney says, WELL, WE'RE GONNA TAKE ALL THE SKILLS WE LEARNED TODAY AND MAKE AN ART PIECE.
Hayden and Brody say, LET'S DO IT!
[Cheerful music plays]
Brody writes on a rectangular piece of metal with a welding crayon. Brody and Hayden smile and nod at each other and lower their welding helmet face coverings. Brody uses the welding torch on the piece of metal.
[Sizzling and snapping]
Hayden stands close by. Brody welds over the letters on the piece of metal.
[Cheerful music continues]
Courtney walks over to Brody and Hayden.
She says, WOW, LOOKING GREAT.
Brody and Haden raise their face coverings.
Courtney says, REALLY WELL DONE, BRODY.
Brody says, THANK YOU, THAT WAS SO MUCH FUN.
He passes the welding torch to Hayden.
Brody says, YOUR TURN.
Hayden says, THANK YOU.
She lowers her face covering and finishes welding over the writing on the piece of metal.
[Sizzling and snapping]
Brody stands close by. Later, at the shop, Brody stands outside.
He says, FRIENDS WHO WELD, I GIVE YOU THE FINISHED PRODUCT.
Brody holds up the piece of metal. Courtney and Hayden join Brody and help him hold it up. The welding on the metal reads, “Welders Rock!”
Brody says, THINK THIS WILL LOOK GOOD IN THE SKILL SPACE?
Courtney says, ABSOLUTELY.
Brody starts to ask, AND WOULD YOU ALSO SAY IT'S A –
Hayden says, WAY AHEAD OF YOU BRODY.
Together, Courtney and Hayden say, A JOB WELD DONE.
[Bright music plays]
Title: Trading Skills.
[Gentle, cheerful music plays]
In the Skill Space, Akeylah rides a bike.
[Bike bell ringing]
Akeylah pedals through the room wearing a helmet.
Brody asks, SO HOW DOES IT FEEL?
Akeylah says, IT'S AMAZING.
YOU DID ALL THIS WITH WELDING?
Brody says, SURE DID. NOW THAT I BONDED WITH WELDING, IT'S THE ONLY THING I COULD THINK OF DOING. NEXT, I'LL MAKE A SCOOTER, AND I'LL BOND A BUNCH OF TOOLS TOGETHER TO MAKE A SUPER TOOL, THEN I’LL MAKE A SUIT OF ARMOUR…
Brody continues listing projects.
Akeylah speaks over Brody and says, THANKS FOR JOINING US AS WE EXPLORE THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WELDING.
Brody stops and says, COMING HANG OUT WITH US AGAIN NEXT TIME, YOU MIGHT JUST FIND THE SKILLED TRADE THAT TAKES YOU TO THE TOP.
Akeylah and Brody wave and say, BYE-BYE.
Akeylah pedals the bike.
Brody says, HEY, WAIT, IT'S MY TURN!
[Bike bell ringing]
Brody chases after Akeylah.

[Cheerful music continues]
