Brody says, HEY PALS, WELCOME BACK TO THE SKILL SPACE. AS YOU CAN TELL, WE'RE A BIT BEHIND ON DISHES.

Akeylah says, WE HAVEN'T HAD HOT WATER FOR A COUPLE DAYS NOW. BRODY, MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRIPLE-CHECK THE PIPES.

Brody says, ON IT!

[Pipes clattering]

Brody leaves and checks the pipes. Anna arrives and stands beside Akeylah.

Brody says, STILL NOT WORKING!

Anna says, STILL NO LUCK WITH THE HOT WATER, HUH? MAYBE MY STEAMFITTING FRIENDS, MYLA AND ABBY, CAN HELP OUT.

Akeylah and Brody say, TWO TRADES PEOPLE?

Anna says, YEAH. A STEAMFITTER IS SOMEBODY WHO DEALS WITH MOVING AROUND HOT WATER AND STEAM, OFTEN THROUGH PIPES. MYLA AND ABBY HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER A LONG TIME, AND THEY'VE BEEN SUPPORTING EACH OTHER IN THE TRADES.

In video footage, Myla and Abby lift their face shields. Abby has blonde braids and a plum shirt, while Myla has straight blonde hair. The text reads, “Myla and Abby, steamfitters.”

Akeylah says, HOT WATER, STEAM, PIPES, AND FRIENDSHIP? I'M IN.

Akeylah leaves.

Brody says, I MEAN, WE CAN ORDER A PIZZA.

Anna says, OF COURSE, WE CAN.

Akeylah narrates, I MADE MY WAY TO THE UNITED ASSOCIATION LOCAL 46, WHERE STEAMFITTERS CUT THEIR TEETH. OR SHOULD I SAY CUT THEIR PIPES?

In a large workroom, Myla crouches beside pipes. Abby checks the other side of a pipe.

Akeylah says, HEY MYLA, HEY ABBY.

Myla and Abby say, HEY, AKEYLAH.

Akeylah says, I AM SO READY TO FIT SOME STEAM. THAT'S WHAT STEAMFITTERS DO, RIGHT?

Myla says, SO, BASICALLY, IT'S A STEAMFITTER'S JOB TO MAKE SURE THAT PIPES ARE CONNECTED CORRECTLY AND MAKE SURE THAT STEAM AND HOT WATER CAN GET TO WHERE IT NEEDS TO GET TOO SAFELY.

Abby says, AND LIKE A PLUMBER, MAKE SURE THAT WATER COMES OUT OF YOUR FAUCET. STEAMFITTERS MAKE SURE THAT THE STEAM AND HOT WATER GO TO THE RIGHT PLACES IN BIG BUILDINGS.

[Grinding, whirring]

Myla says, SO, TO DO THAT, WE GRIND, WE TORCH-CUT, AND WE THREAD-PIPE TO MAKE SURE THAT IT ALL FITS.

Akeylah says, THIS TRADE IS A PERFECT FIT. AND YOU TWO ARE FRIENDS, RIGHT?

Abby says, YEAH, WE ACTUALLY MET ON THE JOB, AND IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE WORK ANYMORE.

Myla says, LET'S GET YOU GEARED UP.

Akeylah narrates, THE FIRST SETUP IN THE STEAMFITTING PIPELINE HAD TO DO WITH TORCH-CUTTINGS AND PIPES.

Akeylah asks, SO WHAT IS TORCH-CUTTING AND WHY DO STEAMFITTERS DO IT?

Myla says, WE DO IT WHEN WE HAVE A PIECE OF PIPE THAT'S TOO LONG, AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IT FITS PERFECTLY.

Abby says, AND TO DO THAT, WE USE OUR SPECIAL TOOL CALLED OXI-ACETYLENE TORCH.

Myla wraps a wrap-around with ruler measurements printed on it around the pipe. She makes a line on the pipe.

Myla replies, THIS IS A WRAP-AROUND, AND WE USE THIS TO MARK THE PIPE NICE AND STRAIGHT.

Akeylah asks, VERY PRECISE.

Abby says, SO, WE HAVE TWO CYLINDERS BEHIND US THAT CONTAIN ACETYLENE AND OXYGEN.

Myla says, AND ONCE WE MIX THEM, THAT'S HOW WE GET THE FLAME.

Abby says, SO, TO TURN ON OUR TORCHES, WE ALWAYS WANT TO TURN OUR ACETYLENE ON BEFORE WE TURN OUR OXYGEN ON.

Myla says, A BEFORE O OR UP WE GO.

[Akeylah giggling]

Abby says, FOR OUR ACETYLENE, WE ONLY WANT TO TURN OUR NOZZLE ABOUT A HALF A TURN. AND THEN WE WANT TO MAKE SURE OUR OXYGEN IS FULLY OPEN. AND THEN WE HAVE OUR STRIKER. BEFORE WE STRIKE IT, WE HAVE TO PUT OUR SHIELDS DOWN.

Akeylah asks, GOOD IDEA.

Everyone lowers their face shields. Abby starts the cutting torch, and the flame shoots out.

[Flames whooshing]

Akeylah asks, WHOA!

Abby says, AND WITH OUR ACETYLENE NOZZLE, WE CAN TURN IT A LITTLE BIT MORE TO GET RID OF THE BLACK FLAMES. AND THEN WE TURN OUR NOZZLE UP HERE TO FULLY TURN OUR OXYGEN ON.

Akeylah asks, WHOA, THIS IS SO COOL!

[Upbeat music plays, flames whooshing]

Abby holds the cutting torch over the line on the pipe.

Abby says, BEFORE WE ACTUALLY START CUTTING, WE HAVE TO HEAT IT UP UNTIL IT'S ABOUT AN ORANGEY REDDISH COLOR, LIKE THAT. AND THEN TO ACTUALLY CUT IT, YOU WANT TO PUSH DOWN ON THE TRIGGER. AND THEN AS YOU'RE CUTTING, JUST FOLLOW ALONG THE LINE.

Abby cuts the pipe.

Akeylah asks, WHOA!

Myla turns the pipe.

Myla says, LET'S ROLL THIS SO THAT WE'RE ALWAYS CUTTING ON THE TOP. DO YOU SEE HOW IT'S CUTTING THROUGH THE METAL, JUST LIKE BUTTER?

[Flames whooshing]

Akeylah asks, YEAH, IT'S PRETTY SMOOTH. WOW, YOU'RE SO GOOD AT THIS.

Myla says, I TAUGHT HER THAT. AKEYLAH, DO YOU WANT TO TRY IT?

Akeylah asks, YEAH!

Abby gives Akeylah the cutting torch.

Abby says, WHEN YOU HOLD IT, YOU CAN HAVE ONE HAND KIND OF UP HERE TO HELP YOU REST IT.

Akeylah moves the cutting torch close to the pipe.

Myla says, WE'LL BRING IT DOWN. YOU'RE GOING TO PRESS THIS TRIGGER, AND YOU JUST MOVE IT ALONG THE PIPE. READY?

Akeylah asks, YEP.

[Flame whooshing, upbeat music plays]

Akeylah cuts the pipe.

Akeylah asks, HOW AM I DOING?

Myla says, REALLY GOOD FOR A FIRST TIME.

[Flames stop whooshing]

Abby, Akeylah, and Myla stand beside the pipe with their face shields raised. Abby and Myla each hold one end of the pipe.

Myla asks, WHY DON'T WE PULL IT APART NOW?

[Clinking]

Akeylah helps Myla pull one-half of the pipe. Abby pulls the other half.

Akeylah says, WHOA! WE WENT RIGHT THROUGH IT!

Myla says, GREAT JOB, AKEYLAH!

[Hands slapping]

Akeylah high-fives Abby and Myla.

Later, everyone's helmets and face shields are removed, and they wear safety glasses. Abby passes Myla a grinder.

Akeylah says, OKAY, SO WHAT IS THIS THING USED FOR?

Myla says, THIS IS A GRINDER. WE USE THIS TO LET OUR PIPE IS PERFECTLY SQUARE, AND WE HAVE NO SHARP EDGES.

Abby says, WE DON'T WANT ANY STEAM OR WATER TO LEAK.

Akeylah says, WE DON'T WANT THAT.

Everyone puts on a helmet with a clear face shield.

Abby says, MYLA, DO YOU WANT TO DO THE HONOURS?

Myla says, LET'S DO IT.

[Grinding, upbeat music plays]

Myla crouches by one end of the pipe and grinds the edge. Sparks fly from the grinder.

Akeylah says, LOOK AT ALL THE SPARKS. SMELLS FUNNY.

[Grinding stops]

Myla turns off the grinder.

Myla says, COME TAKE A LOOK AT THAT, AKEYLAH. IT'S NICE AND SMOOTH, SO NOW WE DON'T HAVE ANY SHARP EDGES, SO WE CAN START WELDING.

Akeylah says, LOOKING SMOOTH.

Akeylah narrates, AFTER LEARNING TO FIT IN WITH THE STEAMFITTERS, I WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MYLA AND ABBY'S JOURNEY.

Akeylah asks, HOW DID YOU TWO GET INTO THE TRADE?

Abby says, I FOUND MY LOVE FOR THE TRADES IN HIGH SCHOOL. SO, ONCE I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO START STEAMFITTING, I TOOK IT.

Akeylah asks, AND HOW ABOUT YOU, MYLA?

Myla says, JUST LIKE ABBY, I STARTED IN HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL. AND THEN I FOUND MY LOVE FOR STEAMFITTING BECAUSE I FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS AN EASY MIX BETWEEN WELDING AND PIPE FITTING. AND HERE I AM DOING A FIVE-YEAR APPRENTICESHIP IN STEAMFITTING.

Akeylah asks, WHAT'S AN APPRENTICESHIP AGAIN?

Abby replies, WELL, IT'S A COMBINATION OF SCHOOL AND WORK.

Akeylah asks, WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE TRADE?

Myla replies, I LOVE ALL THE DIFFERENT VARIETY OF JOBS THAT YOU GET TO DO. I FIRST STARTED OFF DOING SOME HOSPITALS AND DOING SOME NUCLEAR PLANTS. AND THEN I ALSO GOT THE CHANCE TO DO SOME SODA POP FACTORIES.

Akeylah says, SO, YOU GUYS BECAME FRIENDS OVER THE JOB, RIGHT? WHAT'S IT LIKE BONDING OVER A TRADE?

Myla says, IT'S SUPER AWESOME. I MET ABBY ON THE JOB WHEN SHE WAS FIRST STARTING OUT. AND I TOOK HER UNDER MY WING TO TEACH HER MORE.

Abby says, AND FROM THAT, IT WAS AMAZING TO HAVE SOMEONE THAT WAS WILLING TO LOOK OUT FOR ME AND TAKE ME UNDER THE WING TO TEACH ME, ESPECIALLY BEING A WOMAN AS WELL. BECAUSE AS WOMEN IN THE TRADES, WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR EACH OTHER.

Myla says, AND MAKING A LIFELONG FRIENDSHIP WAS THE BEST PERK OF THEM ALL.

[Banging]

Myla rolls the die into position.

Abby says, YOU WANT TO PUT YOUR FOOT ON THE PEDAL AND THEN YOU'RE READY.

[Threader whirring]

Abby pushes on a handle on a wheel, and part of the threader spins.

Akeylah says, OKAY.

[Threader whirring]

Akeylah pulls the wheel, and the threader spins.

Myla says, NOW WE'LL PULL THAT BACK AWAY FROM THE THREAD AND LET'S CHECK IT OUT.

[Whirring stops, upbeat music continues, rumbling]

Myla slides the pipe out of the threader.

Abby says, SO, WE'RE GONNA USE THIS 90 FITTING TO TEST OUT OUR THREADS ON THE END OF THAT PIPE.

Akeylah asks, CAN I TRY?

Abby gives the fitting pipe piece to Akeylah.

Abby says, OF COURSE!

Akeylah says, DRUM ROLL PLEASE.

[Drum roll plays, Myla and Abby tapping]

Myla and Abby drum on the sides of the threader.

Akeylah says, IT FIT! JUST LIKE A BOTTLE CUP. HOW ABOUT THAT? I'VE BEEN THREADING MY WHOLE LIFE AND DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT.

Akeylah unscrews a lid on a mason jar cup.

Akeylah narrates, DURING THE 19TH CENTURY, STEAM BEGAN TO BE USED TO HEAT BUILDINGS AND HOUSEHOLDS. COAL BOILERS WOULD HEAT WATER AND SEND THE STEAM THROUGH PIPES. THIS LED TO THE FIRST STEAMFITTERS, WHO WERE NEEDED TO MAKE SURE ALL OF THE NECESSARY PIPING WENT TO WHERE IT HAD TO GO.

Akeylah narrates, IN 1903, FRENCH ENGINEERS DEVELOPED TORCH CUTTING, AN INVALUABLE TOOL TO HELP CUT THROUGH PIPES FASTER, ALLOWING STEAMFITTERS TO BE QUICKER AND MORE EFFICIENT.

In a black-and-white video, Brody talks to another Brody, and they nod in agreement.

Akeylah narrates, IN 1890, THE UNIONIZED STEAM FITTERS AND PLUMBERS OF TORONTO BANDED TOGETHER AND JOINED THE INTERNATIONAL UNITED ASSOCIATION OF PIPE FITTERS, AND THE LOCAL 46 WAS BORN.

[Myla and Abby talking, upbeat music plays]

Myla and Abby look at leaky pipes as Akeylah approaches behind them.

Akeylah says, THIS DOESN'T LOOK GOOD.

Myla says, SEE HOW THAT LEAKS THERE?

Water leaks from the pipe union.

Myla says, IF THAT WAS STEAM OR WATER, WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO HEAT THE BUILDING. DO YOU THINK YOU COULD HELP US FIX IT?

Akeylah says, I'M TEAMING WITH STEAMING IDEAS. LET'S DO IT!

Myla asks, SEE HOW THIS UNION'S LEAKING? WE HAVE TO TIGHTEN IT.

Akeylah says, YES. BUT WHAT'S A UNION?

Myla says, A UNION IS WHEN YOU HAVE ONE PIECE OF PIPE, BUT YOU HAVE TO PUT IT TOGETHER AND BOTH YOUR THREADS ARE OPPOSITE, SO WE'LL USE THIS TO CONNECT IT.

[Popping]

Abby picks up two pipe wrenches.

Abby says, WE'LL TAKE TWO PIPE WRENCHES, ONE TO HOLD BACK, ONE TO TIGHTEN, AND THAT SHOULD FIX OUR ISSUE. HERE, AKEYLAH, YOU WANT TO GIVE THIS A SHOT AND HELP US OUT?

[Wrenches clattering]

Abby gives Akeylah the pipe wrenches.

Akeylah says, SURE, BUT WHAT DO I DO?

Myla says, FIRST, WE'LL PUT THIS ONE ON THIS SIDE. AND WE'LL PUT THIS ONE RIGHT HERE.

[Clanking]

Akeylah attaches the pipe wrenches so the handle on one wrench points to the left and the other handle points to the right.

Akeylah says, OKAY, LIKE THIS?

Myla says, YEP.

Akeylah says, OKAY.

[Water splashing]

Myla says, AND JUST PUSH DOWN AS HARD AS YOU CAN.

Akeylah pushes down on the two pipe wrenches.

Myla says, PERFECT, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU FIXED IT, AKEYLAH. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN STEAMFITTING? 11 MINUTES?

Abby stands beside another leak.

Abby says, AND FOR THIS ONE, WE'RE PROBABLY GOING TO TAKE THE PIECE OUT AND RE-TAPE IT AND DOPE IT.

Akeylah asks, HOW DO YOU DOPE A PIPE?

[Clattering]

Abby picks up the pipe wrenches.

Myla says, WE USE PIPE DOPE AS A SEALANT SO THAT THE THREADS DON'T LEAK. BUT FIRST, LET'S TURN THE WATER OFF.

[Grinding, clicking, water splashing]

Abby turns the water off and removes part of the pipe. Water pours out of the pipe.

Akeylah asks, WHY IS THE WATER STILL LEAKING? DIDN'T SHE TURN THE WATER OFF?

Abby says, WE DID. IT'S JUST STILL DRAINING FROM THE SYSTEM.

Myla says, NOW IT'S TIME TO RE-TAPE THESE THREADS. WE'LL WRAP IT AROUND.

Myla wraps tape around the pipe.

Myla says, AND WE'LL LET ABBY DOPE IT AND PUT IT BACK IN, AND WE'LL SEE IF IT LEAKS.

Abby applies white paste to the tape.

Akeylah says, THAT LOOKS LIKE MY DAD'S SHAVING CREAM.

Abby says, NOW THAT IT'S TAPED AND DOPED, WE CAN PUT IT BACK IN.

Myla says, HOPEFULLY, THAT'LL FIX THE PROBLEM.

[Banging]

Abby screws the pipe back into place. Myla gives Abby a pipe wrench.

Akeylah says, THANK YOU. YOU GUYS WORK SO WELL TOGETHER.

Abby uses the pipe wrench to turn the pipe.

Myla says, YEAH, WE'VE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER FOR SO LONG. WE EVEN FINISHED EACH OTHER'S...

Abby says, SENTENCES.

Everyone smiles.

Myla says, WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE ABBY'S ALMOST DONE.

[Creaking]

Abby gives Myla the pipe wrench. She puts the union on the end of the pipe.

Abby says, I'M JUST FINISHING THE LAST STEP, RECONNECTING THE UNION. AND THEN WE'LL TURN THE WATER BACK ON AND SEE IF IT LEAKS.

Akeylah says, MY FINGERS ARE CROSSED.

Myla says, ME TOO.

Akeylah says, GO, ABBY, GO!

Abby uses both pipe wrenches to connect the union.

[Clanking]

Myla asks, READY?

Myla and Akeylah count, THREE, TWO, ONE!

[Air hissing]

Myla says, HEY, NO LEAKS. I THINK WE FIXED IT.

Akeylah says, YES! THANKS GUYS. I FEEL LIKE I NOT ONLY GAINED A TRADE, BUT ALSO GAINED TWO FRIENDS. STEAMFITTING ON THREE. ONE.

They put their hands on top of each other.

Myla says, TWO.

Abby says, THREE.

Everyone shouts, STEAMFITTING!

Everyone lifts their hand into the air.

[Whooshing]
