Daniel walks in the studio.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and a blue and gray TVO Kids T-shirt hooded sweatshirt.
He says WELCOME TO
TVOK NEWS.
I'M YOUR NEWS ANCHOR,
DANIEL,
AND THIS IS
WHAT'S HAPPENING.
On a screen behind him appears a picture of a flooded area with the caption "Brantford flooding."
Daniel says ON FEBRUARY 21ST,
THE CITY OF BRANTFORD
SAW THE WORST FLOODING IN
DECADES,
EVACUATING ALMOST 5,000 PEOPLE
FROM THEIR HOMES.
NOW, THIS FLOODING IS PARTLY
BLAMED ON SOME SECTIONS OF
THE GRAND RIVER
CONTAINING BLUE ICE,
WHICH IS TWO FEET OF THICK,
CLEAR, STRONG ICE.
THIS ICE JAM BUILT UP AND THEN
RELEASED A SURGE OF WATER,
ALONG WITH CHUNKS OF ICE.
WARM TEMPERATURES,
RAINFALL,
AND HIGH-PRESSURE SYSTEMS
ALSO HAD AN IMPACT
ON THE FLOODING.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE WATERS
HAVE DROPPED SIGNIFICANTLY,
AND POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED
TO 95 percent OF HOMES.
NOW, THERE'S STILL A LOT OF WORK
TO BE DONE,
AND OUR BEST WISHES ARE WITH
THE FAMILIES OF BRANTFORD
DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME.
NEXT UP,
NICKNAMED "DAY ZERO,"
CAPE TOWN IN SOUTH AFRICA
ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WOULD RUN
OUT OF WATER ON APRIL 12TH.
WITH SIX DAMS,
THIS SEEMS VERY UNLIKELY.
HOWEVER, WITH THREE YEARS
OF LOW RAINFALL
AND A GROWING POPULATION OF
FOUR MILLION PEOPLE,
WATER HAS BEEN REDUCED
TO ALMOST NOTHING.
THE GOVERNMENT HAS ISSUED
A STRICT 50 LITRE A DAY LIMIT
FOR EVERY HOUSEHOLD,
WHICH HAS SUCCESSFULLY PUSHED
DAY ZERO TO JULY 9TH.
NOW, SHOULD THIS DAY
EVER COME,
75 PERCENT OF THE CITY WILL
LOSE ACCESS TO RUNNING WATER,
AND HAVE TO WAIT IN LINE FOR
ONLY 25 LITRES OF WATER A DAY.
SO LET'S HOPE THAT DAY ZERO
NEVER COMES.
Now a picture of an ancient city appears with the caption "Lost and Found."
Daniel says NOW TVO KIDS,
HAVE YOU EVER IMAGINED
THAT YOU MIGHT FIND TREASURE
BURIED UNDER THE GRASS
IN YOUR BACKYARD?
WELL, THAT'S EXACTLY
WHAT HAPPENED
TO SCIENTISTS WORKING
IN GUATEMALA.
THEY DISCOVERED
TENS OF THOUSANDS
OF ANCIENT MAYAN HOUSES,
BUILDINGS, AND PYRAMIDS,
COVERED BY DENSE JUNGLE.
FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS,
THE JUNGLE GREW OVER
THE ABANDONED STRUCTURES,
HIDING THEM AND ALSO
PRESERVING THEM.
RESEARCHERS USED A TECHNIQUE
THAT BOUNCES PULSED LIGHT
OFF THE GROUND, REVEALING SHAPES
HIDDEN IN THE FOLIAGE.
THE DISCOVERY...
SORRY, THE DISCOVERY WILL HELP
ARCHEOLOGISTS LEARN MORE
ABOUT HOW MAYANS
BUILT CITIES, FARMED,
AND DEFENDED THEIR LANDS.
NOW THAT'S A SUCCESSFUL
TREASURE HUNT.
STAY TUNED,
TVO KIDS,
BECAUSE WE ARE FEATURING
A SUPER HERO,
UP NEXT.
