Daniel shouts from space. He appears in the set of TVO K News.

Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and a red T-shirt under an unbuttoned pink shirt.

Daniel says WHOA-- AH!
WHOA-HO-HO-HO!
WHOA!
TVO KIDS, I AM BACK FROM A
BLACK HOLE IN SPACE,
AND JUST IN TIME TO MEET
A MAN WHO'S BEEN TO
OUTER SPACE ON MANY MISSIONS.

On a screen behind him appears a picture of an astronaut.

Daniel says HE'S AN ASTRONAUT,
AND HE'S A PRETTY COOL GUY.
LET'S CHECK IN.

A clip rolls on the screen.

Dave is in his late forties, with short straight gray hair and wears black trousers and a blue shirt with a patch.

He says MY NAME'S DAVE WILLIAMS,
AND I USED TO BE A
CANADIAN ASTRONAUT.
I FLEW IN SPACE TWICE.
THE FIRST TIME IN 1998,
AND THE SECOND TIME IN 2007.
AND MY OFFICIAL TITLE
IS DR. DAVE.
PART OF THE
ASTRO-DAVE MD SERIES
ON HOW TO GO TO SPACE
AND LIVE THERE.
I ALWAYS DREAMT OF
BECOMING AN ASTRONAUT
FROM THE TIME I WAS
SEVEN YEARS OLD.
FOR ME, IT'S THE GREATEST
JOB IN THE WORLD.
AS A DOCTOR, I GET TO PRACTICE
MEDICINE IN SPACE.
AS A SCIENTIST, I GET TO
DO RESEARCH IN SPACE.
AND I LOVE EXPLORING
UNDERWATER SCUBA DIVING.
AND DOING A SPACE WALK IS
BASICALLY THE SAME THING,
EXCEPT I'M WEARING
A BIGGER SUIT.
SO I GET TO GO OUTSIDE AND WORK
IN THE VACUUM OF SPACE.
WHAT'S REALLY EXCITING IS RIDING
ON THE END OF THE CANADARM.
AS A CANADIAN ASTRONAUT,
THERE'S NOTHING THAT'S
MORE EXCITING TO BE ABLE TO DO.

Pictures of Dave in space appear.

Dave says I'VE GOT THE CANADIAN FLAG
ON MY SHOULDER,
HOVERING OUT THERE FROM
THE SPACE STATION,
RIDING AT THE END OF THE ARM,
LOOKING AT THE EARTH
350 KILOMETRES BENEATH ME.
IT'S AN UNBELIEVABLE
SENSATION TO BE ABLE TO DO.
SOMETIMES I GET ASKED,
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO
BECOME AN ASTRONAUT?
WELL, I THINK THE
FIRST THING IS
GET OUR SECOND BOOK CALLED
GO FOR LIFTOFF!

A picture of the book appears. 3 kids doing different activities and a dog illustrate the cover.

Dave says AND IN THAT BOOK WE
TALK ALL ABOUT
WHAT IT'S LIKE TRAINING
TO BE AN ASTRONAUT.
ALL THE THINGS YOU
NEED TO LEARN.
I FIRST DREAMT OF BEING
AN ASTRONAUT
WHEN I WAS 7 YEARS OLD.
AND SOME MIGHT SAY YOUR
TRAINING AS AN ASTRONAUT
STARTS THE MOMENT YOU THINK
OF BECOMING AN ASTRONAUT.
WHETHER YOU'RE OUT IN WOODS
LEARNING TO EXPLORE,
LEARNING HOW TO CAMP,
OR LEARNING ALL ABOUT SCUBA
DIVING AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
IT'S WHAT WE DO IN SCHOOL.
AND OUR ABILITY TO STUDY
SCIENCES THAT DETERMINE
WHETHER OR NOT WE'LL GO
ON AND BE ACCEPTED
INTO THE ASTRONAUT PROGRAM.
THERE'S A NUMBER OF THINGS
THAT I REALLY LOVE
ABOUT BEING IN SPACE.
THE FIRST THING IS
I'M THERE AS AN EXPLORER.
I'M PART OF THAT GROUP OF
HUMANS THAT'S GOING
FARTHER INTO SPACE,
STAYING LONGER,
LOOKING AT THE FUTURE,
GOING BACK TO THE MOON AND
POTENTIALLY ON TO MARS.
AND MAYBE ONE OF YOU
WILL BE THE NEXT
GENERATION OF CANADIAN
ASTRONAUTS THAT WILL
WALK ON THE SURFACE OF MARS.
IF THAT HAPPENS, MAKE SURE YOU
SEND ME AN AUTOGRAPHED PHOTO.
BUT MORE MEMORABLE
IS LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW--
OR EVEN BETTER, BEING OUTSIDE
ON THE SPACE WALK,
LOOKING AT THE PLANET BELOW US.
THIS 4.5 BILLION YEAR
OLD PLANET,
UPON WHICH THE ENTIRE HISTORY
OF THE HUMAN SPECIES
HAS TAKEN PLACE.
THERE'S NO BOUNDARIES
BETWEEN COUNTRIES.
THERE'S NO MAGIC LINES SAYING
THIS IS ONE COUNTRY
AND ANOTHER COUNTRY.
WE'RE ALL HERE TOGETHER,
AND THE EARTH IS A PRETTY
AMAZING PLACE TO BE.

(CLAPPING)

Daniel says INCREDIBLE!
SO, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MEET
DR. DAVE IN PERSON,
TELL YOUR FOLKS TO GO TO
ONTARIOSCIENCECENTRE.CA
FOR DETAILS.
THAT'S IT FOR
TVO K NEWS.
I'M YOUR NEWS ANCHOR, DANIEL,
AND THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING.
