Daniel walks in the studio.

Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, purple trousers and a blue TVO Kids T-shirt.

He says WELCOME TO TVO K NEWS.
I'M YOUR NEWS ANCHOR, DANIEL,
AND THIS IS WHAT'S HAPPENING.

On a screen behind him appears a picture of a group of soldiers with the caption "Canadian peacemakers in Mali."

Daniel says ON JUNE 24TH,
CANADA SENT A SMALL GROUP
OF SOLDIERS TO MALI,
A COUNTRY IN AFRICA.
THEY AREN'T THERE TO FIGHT.
IN FACT,
THE EXACT OPPOSITE.
THEY ARE THERE
TO HELP KEEP PEACE.
BY THE BEGINNING OF AUGUST,
THERE WILL BE 250 CANADIAN
SOLDIERS IN THAT COUNTRY
WORKING ON A UNITED NATIONS
PEACEKEEPING MISSION.
THEY'LL BE THERE
FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR.
SO THERE ARE A FEW THINGS
TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THIS.
NUMBER ONE: WHAT IS
THE UNITED NATIONS?

The logo of the United Nations appears on the screen.

Daniel says WELL, IT'S EXACTLY
WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE:
A GROUP OF NATIONS
UNITED TOGETHER
FOR THE MAIN PURPOSE
OF MAINTAINING WORLDWIDE
PEACE AND SECURITY.
CANADA IS A MEMBER.
NEXT QUESTION:
WHY ARE PEACEKEEPING SOLDIERS
NEEDED IN MALI?
WELL, MALI IS ONE OF THE POOREST
NATIONS IN THE WORLD.
IT IS A LANDLOCKED
COUNTRY.
IT'S SURROUNDED
BY OTHER COUNTRIES,
NOT BY COASTAL WATERS,
AND THE PEOPLE
HAVE SUFFERED FROM
DECADES OF DROUGHT
AND HUNGER.
ALSO, FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS
THERE HAS BEEN POLITICAL CHAOS
AND VIOLENCE.
SO, WHAT WILL BE THE JOB
FOR THE CANADIAN SOLDIERS?
WELL, IN ADDITION TO
PROTECTING THE PEOPLE OF MALI
MOSTLY THEY WILL BE FLYING
MEDICAL EVACUATION MISSIONS,
GETTING INJURED PEOPLE
TO DOCTORS AND TO SAFETY.
WILL IT BE DANGEROUS?
UNFORTUNATELY, IT COULD BE
VERY DANGEROUS.
MORE THAN 100 PEACEKEEPERS
HAVE DIED SINCE 2013.
THERE'S ALSO NATURAL DANGERS
IN MALI
LIKE POISONOUS SCORPIONS,
SNAKES, AND SPIDERS,
NOT TO MENTION
THE EXTREME HEAT.
THIS IS A TOUGH MISSION
FOR OUR SOLDIERS,
BUT CANADA HAS A COMMITMENT
TO HELP BRING
PEACE AND STABILITY
TO THIS STRUGGLING COUNTRY.
LET'S SEND OUR BEST THOUGHTS
TO THEM
AND HOPE EVERYONE
COMES HOME SAFE.
STAY TUNED FOR MORE HEADLINES
AFTER THIS.
