TVO KIDS.
NOW JOINING ME FOR OUR
TVOK NEWS
FEATURE,
WE HAVE STEVE PAIKIN,
FROM
THE AGENDA.
Steve Paikin appears on a window at the top right corner of the screen. He is in his early fifties, clean-shaven with curly brown hair. He wears a brown suit, white shirt, brown tie and a white pocket square.
Daniel turns to look at the window and says WELCOME,
STEVE.
Steve waves and says HI, DANIEL,
GOOD TO BE BACK WITH YOU.
Daniel says YEAH, OKAY,
SO LET'S GET RIGHT DOWN
TO BUSINESS,
SHALL WE?
SO THERE'S ANOTHER
ELECTION COMING UP,
IT'S HAPPENING IN ALL OF
THE MUNICIPALITIES IN ONTARIO.
WHAT IS A MUNICIPALITY?
Steve says A MUNICIPALITY IS JUST
A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE LIVE.
IT'S A VILLAGE, IT'S A TOWN,
IT'S A CITY.
TORONTO'S A MUNICIPALITY,
OTTAWA IS, HAMILTON IS,
AND SO IS TINY LITTLE
BILLINGS TOWNSHIP,
POPULATION 100
ON MANITOULIN ISLAND.
Daniel says WOW, OKAY, SO WHO ARE
THE PEOPLE THAT GET ELECTED
DURING A MUNICIPAL ELECTION?
Steve says WELL, THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO
ARE GONNA REPRESENT US
AT THE CITY AND TOWN HALLS
ALL OVER ONTARIO.
SO MAYORS, COUNCILLORS,
REEVES,
THOSE KINDS OF PEOPLE.
Daniel says OH, OKAY,
SO COOL.
BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS A
MUNICIPALITY RESPONSIBLE FOR,
LIKE, ANYTHING KIDS
WOULD BE INTERESTED IN?
Steve says I THINK SO.
KIDS DON'T WANNA BE LIVING
IN GARBAGE, DO THEY?
NO, THEY GOTTA TAKE
THE GARBAGE OUT.
SO GARBAGE, POLICING,
PAVING THE ROADS,
MAKING SURE THE
FIRE TRUCKS WORK,
THAT'S ALL STUFF THAT
MUNICIPALITIES TAKE CARE OF.
Daniel says YEAH, OKAY,
SO ALL GOOD THINGS.
SO ONE LAST QUESTION,
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT
TO VOTE, ALWAYS?
Steve says I THINK TO BE
A GOOD CITIZEN,
YOU'VE GOTTA PARTICIPATE
IN YOUR DEMOCRACY.
AND THAT DOESN'T JUST MEAN
SHOWING UP AT THE POLLS
EVERY FEW YEARS,
THAT ALSO MEANS PAYING ATTENTION
TO WHAT'S GOING ON,
BUT IT ESPECIALLY MEANS VOTING.
SO ONCE EVERY FOUR YEARS,
WE VOTE FOR OUR MAYORS,
OUR TOWN AND CITY COUNCILLORS
AND SO ON,
AND IT'S JUST A WAY OF
BEING A GOOD CITIZEN
AND CONTRIBUTING
TO OUR DEMOCRACY,
SO THAT'S WHY EVERYBODY
SHOULD DO IT.
Daniel says WOW, ALL OF THIS IS SUCH
GREAT INFORMATION.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, STEVE,
YOU ALWAYS HELP US UNDERSTAND
THE ELECTION PROCESS,
WHETHER IT'S FEDERAL,
PROVINCIAL,
OR MUNICIPAL.
Steve says ANYTIME, DANIEL,
CALL AGAIN.
Daniel says WELL, THAT'S IT
FOR
TVOK NEWS,
SEE YOU REAL SOON AGAIN.
