FEATURE
WITH OUT SPECIAL GUEST,
NAM FROM
THE AGENDA!
WELCOME!
Nam says HI!
Daniel says OKAY, SO, NAM,
YOU WERE A NEWCOMER
TO CANADA A LONG TIME AGO.
SO, WHERE WERE YOU
ORIGINALLY BORN?
Nam says UGANDA.
Daniel says UGANDA, AND CAN YOU TELL US
ABOUT YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE
IN CANADA?
Nam says OH, MY FIRST EXPERIENCE,
IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED
ON THE PLANE.
WE HAD, WE GOT CHOCOLATE CAKE
FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME,
AND WE HAD KETCHUP,
AND WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT YOU WERE
NOT SUPPOSED TO PUT THE KETCHUP
ON THE CHOCOLATE CAKE.
Daniel says RIGHT!
Nam says SO, WE PUT CHOCOLATE CAKE
ALL OVER THE CAKE.
Daniel says YEAH?
Nam says IT TASTED PRETTY GROSS,
BUT IT WAS, LIKE, IT WAS FOOD
AND WE ATE ALL OF IT.
Daniel says RIGHT.
Nam says SOON LEARNED THAT YOU DON'T PUT
KETCHUP ON CHOCOLATE CAKE,
YOU PUT ICE CREAM!
Daniel says SO, THERE'S SOME CULTURAL
DIFFERENCES, RIGHT?
Nam says YEAH.
Daniel says OKAY, SO, UH, OKAY.
SO, WE HAVE A NEWCOMER,
SAMMY,
AND I WANT YOU
TO WATCH HIS VIDEO.
HE CAME HERE ABOUT HALF A YEAR...
A YEAR AND A HALF AGO,
I SHOULD SAY.
SO, LET'S WATCH THE CLIP.
A clip rolls with the caption "Sammy."
Sammy is around 11, with short wavy brown hair and wears a gray T-shirt with a print on the front.
He says MARHABA. MY NAME IS SAMMY.
"MARHABA" IN ARABIC MEANS
"HELLO."
WE ALL CAME FROM SYRIA,
AND THEN, WE ALL GOT IN JORDAN
AND THEN, WE WENT TO CANADA.
A picture shows Sammy with his family.
Sammy says I LEARN ENGLISH WHEN I CAME
TO CANADA.
IN THE BEGINNING, IT WAS HARD
AND LIKE, WHEN I...
BECAUSE I WASN'T KNOW
HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH,
AND THEN, IT GOT EASIER
AND EASIER.
SO, THAT'S HOW I MAKE FRIENDS.
I LIKE MATH AT SCHOOL
BECAUSE IT DON'T HAVE WORDS
AND WRITING.
IT JUST HAVE NUMBERS, SO FOR ME
IT'S THE EASIEST SUBJECT.
SOME OF THE THINGS I LIKE
ABOUT CANADA ARE NATURE.
I LIKE TO PLAY IN PARKS,
AND I LOVE SNOW
BECAUSE IT'S COLD
AND, LIKE, WE COULD SLIDE ON IT,
AND ALSO, COULD DO A SNOWMAN
AND SNOWBALLS.
CANADA IS REALLY GOOD,
AND I LIKE IT HERE.
Daniel says AW, SO WHAT DO YOU THINK
OF SAMMY'S STORY?
Nam says UM, LIKE SAMMY,
WHEN WE FIRST GOT HERE,
I LOVED THE SNOW.
BUT AS I GOT OLDER, I DON'T
REALLY LIKE THE SNOW THAT MUCH!
I KIND OF HAVE A LOVE,
NOT-SO-NICE... ANYWAY.
BUT I IDENTIFIED WITH A COUPLE
OF THINGS FROM SAMMY'S STORY.
Daniel says YEAH?
Nam says FIRST WITH THE LANGUAGE
COMPONENT.
WHEN WE FIRST CAME TO CANADA,
I SPOKE THREE LANGUAGES.
Daniel says WHOA!
Nam says AND I JUST SPOKE A LITTLE BIT
OF ENGLISH,
BECAUSE WE WERE LIVING
IN A REFUGEE CAMP IN KENYA
WHEN WE FOUND OUT
THAT WE WERE COMING TO CANADA.
Daniel says YEAH.
Nam says AND SO, WHEN WE FIRST GOT HERE,
NOT BEING ABLE TO COMMUNICATE
WITH OTHER PEOPLE
WAS REALLY DIFFICULT.
AND THE ONE THING
THAT I DO REGRET
IS THAT I THINK THE TEACHERS
WERE DOING IT FOR OUR BENEFIT,
WAS THAT WE WEREN'T ALLOWED
TO SPEAK THE OTHER LANGUAGES.
Daniel says OH!
Nam says AND I LOST THEM.
Daniel says RIGHT.
AND SO, I WISH WE HAD KEPT THEM,
BUT I THINK THEY WERE JUST
TRYING TO HELP ME,
AND MY SIBLINGS,
TO LEARN ENGLISH.
Daniel says RIGHT, SO SPEAKING OF SCHOOL,
WAS IT HARD AT SCHOOL?
LIKE, WAS IT HARD
TO MAKE FRIENDS OR LEARN?
Nam says YEAH, IT WAS REALLY HARD
AT FIRST.
I MEAN, MY NAME IS
NAMUGENYI KIWANUKA.
Daniel says RIGHT, YEAH.
Nam says SO, FOR A WHILE,
I WAS KNOWN AS MARY
'CAUSE IT WAS JUST EASIER
FOR PEOPLE TO PRONOUNCE.
AND YOU KNOW, NOT BEING ABLE
TO SPEAK ENGLISH,
AND ALSO BECAUSE WE WERE
REFUGEES, WE WERE POOR,
AND SOME KIDS WOULD MAKE
FUN OF US
FOR NOT HAVING
THE RIGHT CLOTHES.
Daniel says AW, RIGHT.
Nam says FUNNY STORY!
Daniel says YEAH?
Nam says SO, WE USED TO GET CLOTHING
FROM THE CHURCH,
AND SO, ONE DAY I FOUND
THIS REALLY COOL OUTFIT.
IT WAS A MATCHING TOP
AND BOTTOM.
I WAS LIKE, "I LOOK SO GOOD."
Daniel says SO COOL!
Nam says AND I WORE IT TO SCHOOL,
AND IT TURNED OUT
THAT IT WAS PYJAMAS!
(LAUGHING)
Daniel says YOU WORE PYJAMAS TO SCHOOL.
Nam says I WORE PYJAMAS TO SCHOOL.
I DIDN'T KNOW,
AND SO, A COUPLE OF KIDS
MADE FUN OF ME.
Daniel says AWW.
Nam says AND I ENDED UP GOING HOME
AT LUNCH HOUR TO GET CHANGED.
BUT YEAH, THAT WAS DIFFICULT.
Daniel says RIGHT, SO ANY ADVICE
FOR NEWCOMERS?
Nam says UM, FOR NEWCOMERS,
I MEAN,
I THINK IT'S THE PEOPLE
AROUND YOU.
IF YOU SEE,
IF A STUDENT SEES SOMEONE
WHO'S JUST COME TO THE COUNTRY,
JUST BE KIND.
Daniel says YEAH.
Nam says AND YOU KNOW,
AND JUST TALK TO THEM.
THEY'RE THE SAME AS YOU.
THEY JUST HAVE A, MAYBE THEY
SPEAK A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE.
MAYBE THEIR NAME
IS NOT LIKE YOURS,
BUT THEY'RE THE SAME PERSON.
AND YOU ALSO SHOULD TRY
TO IMAGINE IF IT WAS YOU,
WHAT IT WOULD FEEL LIKE
IF SOMEBODY MADE FUN OF YOU
FOR WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE
OR WHAT YOUR NAME...
OR EVEN WHAT YOU ATE.
Daniel says RIGHT.
Nam says YEAH, SO JUST BE KIND.
Daniel says WELL, SUCH GREAT ADVICE
FROM NAM!
WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
YOU ARE SUCH A KIND
AND FASCINATING PERSON.
Nam says THANKS, DANIEL.
Daniel says AND WE'RE SO GLAD
TO HAVE YOU HERE IN CANADA.
SO, THAT'S IT FOR
TVOK NEWS.
I'M DANIEL,
AND SEE YOU AGAIN REAL SOON.
