Daniel walks in the studio.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans and a burgundy, long sleeved TVO Kids T-shirt.
He says WELCOME BACK TO TVO K NEWS.
NOW, I NEED YOU GUYS
TO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS GUY.
On a screen behind him appears a picture of a white moose with a caption that reads "Ghost Moose."
Daniel says NOPE, YOU'RE NOT SEEING
A GHOST MOOSE.
IT'S AN ACTUAL MOOSE
THAT SOMEONE SAW IN SWEDEN
LATE LAST YEAR.
UP UNTIL RECENTLY
SIGHTINGS OF WHITE MOOSE
WERE VERY RARE.
SO RARE THAT WHEN PEOPLE
REPORTED SEEING ONE
THEY WEREN'T ALWAYS BELIEVED.
HOWEVER, SCIENTISTS BELIEVE
THAT WHITE MOOSE
ARE MORE COMMON TODAY.
IN FACT, THERE HAVE BEEN
A COUPLE OF SIGHTINGS
HERE IN ONTARIO RECENTLY.
IN OCTOBER, TWO WHITE MOOSE
WERE SPOTTED NEAR TIMMINS
AND A YEAR BEFORE THAT
ANOTHER PAIR WERE SEEN
IN THE SAME AREA.
THIS GUY WAS SPOTTED
NEAR FOLEYET, NORTH OF SUDBURY.
NOW, YOU MIGHT THINK
THAT THEY ARE ALBINO MOOSE.
BEING ALBINO IS WHEN
A PERSON OR ANIMAL
LACKS PIGMENTATION.
Now a picture of a white squirrel appears on the screen.
Daniel says THEIR SKIN AND HAIR IS WHITE
AND THE PUPILS OF THEIR EYES
ARE RED,
LIKE THIS SQUIRREL.
BUT SCIENTISTS DON'T BELIEVE
THESE MOOSE ARE ALBINO.
THEY JUST HAVE FUR.
WE'RE SEEING MORE OF THEM
BECAUSE OF THE CHANGE
IN THE HABITAT.
FOR EXAMPLE,
THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE
OF ROADS IN NORTHERN ONTARIO,
WHICH CREATES
ECOLOGICAL BARRIERS.
THESE CONFINE MOOSE
AND OTHER ANIMALS
TO SMALLER AREAS,
SO WHITE MOOSE ENCOUNTER
EACH OTHER MORE FREQUENTLY
AND CREATE MORE WHITE MOOSE.
SO THE NEXT TIME YOU'RE UP IN
THE GREAT WHITE NORTH,
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR
A "GHOST MOOSE."
STAY TUNED FOR OUR FEATURE
STORY, COMING UP NEXT.
