Daniel walks in the studio.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and burgundy and white TVO Kids hooded sweatshirt.
He says WELCOME TO
TVOK NEWS.
I'M YOUR NEWS ANCHOR,
DANIEL,
AND THIS IS
WHAT'S HAPPENING.
On a screen behind him appears the picture of a thermometer in the snow with the caption "Extreme cold."
Daniel says ENVIRONMENT CANADA HAS BEEN
ISSUING EXTREME COLD WARNINGS
THROUGHOUT THE
PROVINCE OF ONTARIO
OVER THE PAST
COUPLE OF WEEKS.
SOME AREAS HAVE SEEN
TEMPERATURES AS LOW AS MINUS 30.
I KNOW IT HAS BEEN COLD
HERE IN TORONTO
BECAUSE I'VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME
INSIDE MY HOUSE LATELY,
EXCEPT TO HELP SHOVEL SNOW
ON MY STREET.
BUT OTHERWISE I'VE BEEN
COZY ON MY COUCH,
READING SOME BOOKS,
AND WATCHING SOME MOVIES.
YOU MIGHT BE DOING
SOMETHING SIMILAR.
BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE
IN COMMUNITIES ALL OVER ONTARIO
WHO DO NOT HAVE
THAT LUXURY.
THEY ARE THE HOMELESS,
AND IN TORONTO ALONE,
THERE ARE ALMOST 9,000 PEOPLE
WHO LIVE ON THE STREET.
SO WHAT DO YOU DO
IF YOU ARE HOMELESS
AND THE WEATHER
IS FREEZING?
WELL, THERE ARE SHELTERS
WHERE PEOPLE CAN GO TO
TO KEEP WARM AND TO SLEEP,
BUT THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH SPACES
FOR EVERYONE.
ALSO, SOME HOMELESS PEOPLE DON'T
FEEL COMFORTABLE IN A SHELTER,
AND DON'T WANT TO GO TO ONE.
SO THESE PEOPLE DEPEND ON
HELP FROM VOLUNTEERS.
RECENTLY, A GROUP CALLED
PROJECT WINTER SURVIVAL
GOT TOGETHER TO PACK
SURVIVAL KITS
TO DISTRIBUTE
TO HOMELESS PEOPLE.
EACH KIT CONTAINS 175 DOLLARS WORTH
OF CLOTHING, FOOD,
AND PERSONAL CARE ITEMS,
ALL DONATED.
THESE ARE DISTRIBUTED
TO AGENCIES
AND SHELTERS ACROSS TORONTO,
AND POLICE OFFICERS CARRY KITS
IN THEIR PATROL CARS TO HAND OUT
TO HOMELESS PEOPLE
THEY SEE ON THE STREET.
THIS IS AN AMAZING WAY TO KEEP
OUR FELLOW CITIZENS SAFE.
CHECK IN YOUR COMMUNITY TO SEE
IF THERE IS A WAY
YOU CAN PARTICIPATE TO HELP
THOSE LESS FORTUNATE,
AND MAKE WINTER A SAFER SEASON
FOR THOSE IN NEED.
STAY TUNED FOR MORE
TVOK NEWS,
COMING UP NEXT.
