Daniel walks in the studio.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and an orange TVO Kids T-shirt under an unbottoned pink shirt.
He says HELLO, AND WELCOME
TO
TVOK NEWS.
I'M YOUR NEW ANCHOR, DANIEL,
AND THIS IS WHAT'S HAPPENING.
I WANT YOU GUYS
TO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VIDEO.
WHOA.
A video on a screen behind him shows an insect walking in the dirt.
Daniel says PRETTY COOL, EH?
BUT YOU MIGHT BE
WONDERING WHY
THIS LITTLE CRITTER
IS MAKING BIG NEWS.
WELL, IT'S BECAUSE
SCIENTISTS BELIEVE
THAT THIS BUG MAY
HAVE SURVIVED...
(ECHOING)
He screams THE ICE AGE!
He says HOW COOL IS THAT?
THESE ITSY-BITSY BUGS
ARE CALLED HAPLOCAMPA WAGNELLI,
AND WERE FOUND IN
A LIMESTONE CAVE
ON VANCOUVER ISLAND,
B.C.
THIS CANADIAN CRITTER IS ABOUT
THREE TO FOUR MILLIMETRES LONG,
HAS NO EYES, AND IS A WHITE-ISH,
TRANSPARENT COLOUR.
NOW, ONE OF THE PROFESSORS OF
ANIMAL BIOLOGY STUDYING THE CASE
SAID THAT THESE MINIATURE MITES
LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE
LIVED UNDERGROUND IN CAVES
FOR A LONG TIME.
Now a picture of a man in a cave appears with the caption "Haplocampa Wagnelli."
Daniel says THIS MEANS THEY CAN SURVIVE IN
GLACIAL PERIODS
LIKE THE ICE AGE.
THIS IS REMARKABLE,
BECAUSE THERE ARE NO EXAMPLES
OF SPECIES THAT LIVE IN
SUBTERRANEAN AREAS
THIS FAR NORTH,
HINTING THAT WE SHOULD BE
LOOKING FOR SPECIES
IN OTHER PLACES
WHERE PEOPLE DON'T
REALLY LOOK FOR THEM.
NOW, ALTHOUGH SCIENTISTS
AREN'T ABLE TO PINPOINT
EXACTLY HOW OLD
THIS SPECIES IS,
THEY DO KNOW THAT
THE HAPLOCAMPA WAGNELLI
IS A PRIMITIVE SPECIES,
WHICH RAISES A LOT OF QUESTIONS
FOR RESEARCHERS,
AND WILL HOPEFULLY HELP THEM
DISCOVER MORE SPECIES WITH
INCREDIBLE STORIES.
STAY TUNED FOR MORE
