Daniel walks in the studio.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and an orange TVO Kids T-shirt under an unbuttoned pink shirt.
He says WELCOME BACK TO
TVOK NEWS.
On a screen behind him appears a picture of a compass with the caption "Where's the north."
Daniel says NOW, I'VE GOT
A QUESTION FOR YOU.
DO YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE?
IT'S A COMPASS.
PEOPLE USE IT FOR NAVIGATION,
USUALLY WHEN HIKING OUTDOORS.
NOW, THE LOOSE NEEDLE INSIDE,
WHICH IS MAGNETIZED AT THE TIP,
WILL ALWAYS REST
AT THE NORTH DIRECTION.
WHY? BECAUSE IT'S DRAWN
TOWARDS MAGNETIC NORTH.
SO WHAT IS MAGNETIC NORTH?
IS IT THE SAME
AS THE NORTH POLE?
ACTUALLY,
IT ISN'T.
THERE ARE TWO NORTHS.
WHAT?
A map on the screen shows the location of Ellesmere Island.
Daniel says YES, TRUE NORTH IS LOCATED IN
THE MIDDLE OF THE ARCTIC OCEAN.
MAGNETIC NORTH IS LOCATED ON
ELLESMERE ISLAND,
IN NORTHERN CANADA.
THEY ARE ABOUT
500 KILOMETRES APART.
NOW, MAGNETIC NORTH
IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT,
BECAUSE IT HELPS US NAVIGATE.
JUST LIKE THE COMPASS,
GPS SYSTEMS,
AIRPLANES,
SUBMARINES,
ALL SORTS OF THINGS DEPEND ON
THE LOCATION OF MAGNETIC NORTH.
WELL, IT'S MOVING.
HISTORICALLY,
MAGNETIC NORTH HAS MOVED
ABOUT 11 KILOMETRES A YEAR.
BUT, SINCE 1980,
IT'S ACCELERATED,
AND NOW MOVES ABOUT
50 KILOMETRES A YEAR.
SO, RECENTLY SCIENTISTS DID AN
EMERGENCY UPDATE
OF MAGNETIC NORTH LOCATION.
THE UPDATE WILL STAY IN PLACE
FOR ABOUT FIVE YEARS,
WHEN IT WILL HAVE
TO BE UPDATED AGAIN.
DO WE KNOW WHAT CAUSES
MAGNETIC NORTH TO MOVE?
WELL, SCIENTISTS THINK
THAT IT HAS TO DO
WITH THE HOT LIQUID METAL
THAT SURROUNDS THE EARTH'S CORE.
A cross section image of the Earth appears on the screen.
Daniel says IT'S CONSTANTLY MOVING
AND SHIFTING,
DRAWING MAGNETIC NORTH
TOWARDS IT.
PRETTY COOL.
OR, PRETTY HOT.
STAY TUNED FOR
OUR FEATURE STORY,
COMING UP NEXT.
