Daniel walks in the studio.

Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, black sweatpants and a gray and blue TVO Kids hooded sweatshirt.

He says WELCOME TO
TVOK NEWS.
I'M YOUR NEWS ANCHOR, DANIEL,
AND THIS IS WHAT'S HAPPENING.

On a screen behind him appears a picture of a bee next to a calculator and the caption "Bee plus student."

Daniel says ARE YOU HAVING A LITTLE TROUBLE
WITH YOUR MATH HOMEWORK?
WELL, WE MAY HAVE THE PERFECT
TUTOR FOR YOU.
SCIENTISTS ARE BUZZING
ABOUT HOW BEES,
YES, BEES,
ARE ABLE TO LEARN MATH.
WHAT?
WELL, LET'S BREAK IT DOWN.
LAST YEAR,
BEES WERE THE FIRST INSECTS
TO SHOW AN UNDERSTANDING
OF THE NUMBER ZERO,
WHICH MAY NOT BE
THAT INCREDIBLE,
BUT IT IS, CONSIDERING YOUNG
CHILDREN LEARN THE NUMBER ZERO
LATER THAN OTHER NUMBERS,
AND OFTEN HAVE TROUBLE WITH IT.
NOT ONLY THAT,
A PREVIOUS STUDY FOUND THAT BEES
CAN ALSO COUNT TO FOUR.
BUT,
IN A RECENT STUDY,
RESEARCHERS IN AUSTRALIA AND
FRANCE WERE ABLE TO TEACH BEES
MORE THAN JUST
COUNTING UP TO FOUR.
FIRST, THE RESEARCHERS
TAUGHT THE BEES SIMPLE ADDITION
AND SUBTRACTION USING NUMBERS,
SHAPES, AND COLOURS.
THE BEES HAD TO
CHOOSE WHICH DIRECTION
WOULD RESULT IN
THE CORRECT ANSWER.
IF THE BEE GOT IT CORRECT,
THEY WERE REWARDED SUGAR WATER.
IF THEY GOT IT WRONG,
THEY GOT SOUR WATER.
NOW, AFTER 40 TO 70
LEARNING SESSIONS,
THE BEES WERE TESTED.
HOWEVER, JUST LIKE US,
THE BEES WEREN'T PERFECT.
THEY WERE ABLE TO GET
THE CORRECT ANSWER
ABOUT 70 PERCENT OF THE TIME.
GOOD ENOUGH TO EARN THEM
A B-PLUS.

(RIMSHOT PLAYING)

Daniel says THESE BEES JOIN THE RANKS
OF ANIMALS SUCH AS SPIDERS,
PIGEONS, CHIMPANZEES,
PARROTS,
AND OF COURSE,
HUMANS.
ALTHOUGH, THEY MAY BE FAR FROM
DOING LONG DIVISION,
BUT WHO KNOWS?
MAYBE ONE DAY, YOU'LL BE
LEARNING GEOMETRY FROM A BEE.
STAY TUNED
FOR MORE
TVOK NEWS,
COMING UP NEXT.
