Daniel walks in the studio.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, beige trousers and a maroon TVO Kids sweatshirt.
He says WELCOME TO
TVOK NEWS.
I'M YOUR NEWS ANCHOR,
DANIEL,
AND THIS IS WHAT'S HAPPENING.
(MORSE CODE BEEPING)
Daniel says SO THAT'S THE SOUND OF AN SOS
CALL IN MORSE CODE.
IT'S WHAT AIRCRAFT AND MARINE
SHIPS USED TO USE
WHEN THEY WERE
IN DISTRESS.
NOWADAYS, THE WORD MAYDAY
IS USED INSTEAD,
REPEATED THREE TIMES
IN A ROW.
On a screen behind him appears a landscape picture with the caption "High Seas Rescue."
Daniel says THAT'S THE MESSAGE THAT CAME
FROM THE CRUISE SHIP
VIKING SKY LAST SATURDAY.
THE SHIP, IN EXTREME WEATHER
OFF THE COAST OF NORWAY,
WITH WINDS UP TO 70
KILOMETRES PER HOUR,
AND WAVES UP TO
EIGHT METRES HIGH,
LOST POWER
AND BEGAN DRIFTING
TOWARDS
A ROCKY SHORE.
INSIDE THE TOSSING SHIP,
PASSENGERS WERE TERRIFIED
BY WAVES OF FREEZING WATER
CRASHING THROUGH
WINDOWS AND DOORS,
AND FIXTURES FALLING
FROM CEILINGS.
A video on the screen shows the inside of the ship with people staggering and furniture sliding around.
Daniel says THERE WERE OVER
1,300 PASSENGERS ON BOARD,
INCLUDING 15 CANADIANS.
WITH THE SHIP DRIFTING
DANGEROUSLY TOWARDS THE COAST,
IT WAS DECIDED THE PASSENGERS
NEEDED TO BE RESCUED.
BUT, BECAUSE THE WATER
WAS SO TREACHEROUS,
THE ONLY SAFE WAY TO EVACUATE
PEOPLE WAS BY HELICOPTER.
SO, OVER THE COURSE
OF SEVERAL HOURS,
PASSENGERS WERE AIRLIFTED FROM
THE SHIP ONE AT A TIME.
THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN TERRIFYING
BECAUSE OF THE INTENSE WINDS.
ABOUT 479 PASSENGERS
WERE RESCUED FROM THE SHIP
BEFORE THE WEATHER CHANGED
AND THE POWER WAS RESTORED.
AFTER THAT, TWO TUGBOATS
GUIDED THE CRUISE SHIP
INTO A NEARBY PORT
OF MOLDE.
OF THE OVER 1,300 PASSENGERS,
IT SEEMS ONLY 20
SUFFERED INJURIES.
THAT'S AMAZING!
IT'S A GREAT EXAMPLE
OF WHAT WE CAN DO
AND WHAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED
WHEN SO MANY PEOPLE
WORK TOGETHER
TO HELP OTHERS.
LET'S HOPE THOSE AFFECTED
WILL QUICKLY RECOVER.
STAY TUNED FOR MORE
