Daniel walks in the studio.

Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and a gray and blue TVO Kids hooded sweatshirt.

He says WELCOME TO
TVOK NEWS.
I'M YOUR HOST,
DANIEL,
AND THIS IS
WHAT'S HAPPENING.

On a screen behind him appears the logo of the Canadian Women's Hockey League with a caption that reads "Benched."

Daniel says THERE WAS SOME BAD NEWS
IN THE WORLD OF WOMEN'S HOCKEY
IN CANADA THIS WEEK.
THE CWHL, THE CANADIAN WOMEN'S
HOCKEY LEAGUE,
ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL
CLOSE DOWN AS OF MAY 1ST.
THIS IS A DEVASTATING BLOW
TO ALL THE PLAYERS,
COACHES, AND EVERYONE
INVOLVED IN THE LEAGUE,
AND ALSO FOR THE FANS.
THE LEAGUE HAS BEEN HOME
TO MANY OF THE WORLD'S TOP
FEMALE HOCKEY PLAYERS,
LIKE REBECCA JOHNSTON OF
THE CALGARY INFERNO,
AND NATALIE SPOONER OF
THE TORONTO FURIES.
IT'S ALSO THE PLACE WHERE FUTURE
PLAYERS HONE THEIR SKILLS
AND PREPARE FOR
THE OLYMPIC GAMES.
THE LEAGUE'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
SAID THAT MAINTAINING THE CWHL
WAS NOT ECONOMICALLY
SUSTAINABLE,
WHICH MEANS THERE JUST WASN'T
ENOUGH MONEY TO KEEP IT GOING.
BUT, THE CWHL
IS CERTAINLY NOT
THE FIRST LEAGUE
TO DISMANTLE.
MAYBE YOU'VE HEARD OF A LEAGUE
CALLED THE NHL?
YEAH, THE NATIONAL HOCKEY
LEAGUE.
IT WAS BORN IN 1917,
BUT BETWEEN THAT TIME
AND 1942,
THERE WAS SO MUCH INSTABILITY
WITH ITS TEAMS STARTING UP
AND FOLDING ALL THE TIME.
IN FACT, IN THE 1970'S,
THERE WAS ANOTHER LEAGUE
CALLED THE WHA,
WORLD HOCKEY ASSOCIATION,
WHICH DIRECTLY COMPETED
WITH THE NHL.
SOMETIMES IT TAKES A WHILE
FOR A BUSINESS TO TAKE HOLD
AND FIND A STABLE MODEL.
LET'S HOPE THAT'S THE CASE
FOR THE CWHL,
AND CANADIAN WOMEN HOCKEY
PLAYERS CAN GET BACK ON THE ICE.
STAY TUNED FOR MORE NEWS,
COMING UP NEXT.
