Daniel walks in the studio.
Daniel is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and wears glasses, jeans, and a gray and blue TVO Kids hooded sweatshirt.
He says WELCOME BACK.
NOW, BACK IN NOVEMBER
OF LAST YEAR,
A FOOTBRIDGE THAT CONNECTED
CRESCENT TOWN SCHOOL
TO THE HOMES OF MANY STUDENTS
COLLAPSED.
IT HAS STILL NOT BEEN REPLACED,
WHICH MAKES GETTING TO SCHOOL
AND HOME DIFFICULT
AND DANGEROUS
FOR THOSE KIDS.
SO THEY DECIDED TO TAKE MATTERS
INTO THEIR OWN HANDS,
AND WITH THE HELP OF
THEIR TEACHER,
WROTE LETTERS TO
THE MAYOR OF TORONTO,
THE TORONTO DISTRICT
SCHOOL BOARD,
AND THE PROPERTY OWNER.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK
AT THEIR STORY.
A clip rolls on a screen behind him.
A brown-haired girl in a pink hoodie says MY NAME IS HENA.
A brown-haired boy in a red T-shirt says AM WRIDDHO.
A brown-haired boy in a blue sweatshirt says MY NAME IS NAZIF.
A girl with brown hair in pigtails says MY NAME IS KAANGKHITA.
Hena says AND I AM IN GRADE 3
AT CRESCENT TOWN SCHOOL.
I AM WRITING THIS LETTER BECAUSE
I HAVE SOME CONCERNS ABOUT
THE BRIDGE THAT COLLAPSED
AT CRESCENT TOWN.
Kaangkhita says THE BRIDGE COLLAPSED
LAST NOVEMBER.
IT ALMOST HAD BEEN
SIX MONTHS.
Wriddho says WE HAVE TO CROSS THE ROAD,
AND LIKE,
SINCE IT'S ICY AND SLIPPERY,
IT'S REALLY DANGEROUS.
Hena says THE CRESCENT TOWN BRIDGE
WAS VERY HELPFUL
FOR PARENTS AND KIDS,
INCLUDING ELDERS.
I USED TO BRING
MY BROTHER TO SCHOOL
USING THE CRESCENT TOWN
BRIDGE,
BUT NOW I CAN'T.
Nasif says WHEN WILL YOU MAKE
A NEW BRIDGE?
STUDENTS AND PARENTS
NEED TO CROSS THE ROAD
TO GET TO AND FROM SCHOOL,
AND IT IS NOT SAFE.
Wriddho says WE WROTE THE LETTERS TO THE
OWNER OF LIKE,
THE PROPERTIES.
Kaangkhita says 12 OF US WROTE TO
PINEDALE PROPERTIES,
AND SIX OF US WROTE TO
MAYOR JOHN TORY.
WE HEARD A RESPONSE
FROM MAYOR TORY, AND TDSB,
BUT NO RESPONSE FROM
PINEDALE PROPERTIES YET.
Wriddho says WE LEARNED TO LIKE,
WHEN WE'RE WRITING LETTERS,
TO EXPRESS OUR FEELINGS.
Kaangkhita says IT IS IMPORTANT
BECAUSE IN WRITING,
THEY CAN UNDERSTAND
YOUR FEELING,
AND THEY CAN UNDERSTAND
YOUR OPINIONS.
Wriddho says ADVICE I WOULD GIVE TO KIDS IN
OTHER COMMUNITIES
IS THAT YOU SHOULD STAND UP FOR
YOURSELF AND SPEAK OUT.
Kaangkhita says IF YOU SEE SOMETHING WRONG,
OR YOU'RE GETTING BULLIED,
YOU HAVE A VOICE,
YOU CAN SPEAK UP.
They all say CRESCENT TOWN STANDS UP!
Kaangkhita says WE ALL HAVE RIGHTS.
Daniel says YEAH,
CRESCENT TOWN STANDS UP!
AMAZING WORK,
GUYS.
THAT'S AN INSPIRING AND
IMPRESSIVE STORY,
AND GREAT ADVICE FOR ANYONE
FACING CHALLENGES
IN THEIR COMMUNITY.
GOOD LUCK,
CRESCENT TOWN.
LET'S HOPE YOU GET
A NEW BRIDGE SOON.
THAT'S ALL FOR
TVOK NEWS,
SEE YOU NEXT TIME.
