[Music playing]

The opening slate reads "MARK’S MOMENTS" over a set of nine videos of pairs of people doing different activities.

Mark says TODAY, ON MARK'S
MOMENTS, I'M HANGING WITH
BROTHERS, ETHAN AND GAVIN, WHO
WERE BORN WITH USHER SYNDROME.

Ethan and Gavin appear on screen. Gavin is a little younger, has wavy blond hair and wears a light blue Polo T-shirt. Ethan has blond hair, too, and wears a blue Polo T-shirt.

Ethan says I'M ETHAN AND I'M NINE
YEARS OLD.
I LIKE BASEBALL AND OUTER SPACE.

Gavin says I'M GAVIN, I LIKE
BASEBALL AND TENNIS, AND I'M
SEVEN YEARS OLD.

(music plays)

A caption appears on screen and it reads: "Ethan, age: 9. Gavin, age: 7. Usher Syndrome."

Mark says ETHAN AND GAVIN, YOU
GUYS ARE BORN WITH USHER
SYNDROME.
CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THAT IS AND
HOW IT AFFECTS YOU?

Mark is in his twenties and has short, blonde hair and blue eyes. He wears a blue striped Polo and jeans. He sits in the boys’ bedroom.

Ethan says USHER SYNDROME AFFECTS
US BY...LIKE, LET'S SAY, WE'RE
DEAF.
WE'RE BORN DEAF, SO WE WEAR
COCHLEAR IMPLANTS.
AND IT UN... IT MAKES US
UNBALANCED AND TROUBLE SEEING.

Mark says WHAT ARE COCHLEAR
IMPLANTS?

Ethan shows the implants as the screen shows a close up of the device in position, by the back of Ethan’s head.

Ethan says COCHLEAR IMPLANTS,
I'LL TAKE ONE OFF TO SHOW YOU.
COCHLEAR IMPLANTS ARE - ARE
TECHNICALLY EARS TO PEOPLE WHO
ARE DEAF.

Mark says NOW, GAVIN, DO YOU EVER
DECIDE NOT TO WEAR YOUR
RECEIVERS AT ALL, OR DO YOU HAVE
TO WEAR THEM ALL THE TIME?

Gavin says UHM, WHEN, WHEN, WHEN
I'M LIKE BRINGING, LIKE, UH,
LIKE WHEN I'M WALKING TO A
STORE, I HAVE TO WEAR THEM.
LIKE, BUT, LIKE WHEN SOMEBODY'S
SAYING, LIKE, A BAD WORD TO ME,
LIKE, AND LIKE, UHM, I DON'T
WANT TO ANSWER IT.
AND THEY'RE, LIKE, NOT MY
FRIEND, LIKE, THEY'RE A BULLY,
AND TOLD ME, THEY'RE GONNA TELL
ME WHAT TO DO...

Mark says YOU TAKE THEM OUT.
AH, OKAY!

Ethan says WHEN YOU TAKE THEM,
UHM, WE USED TO DO THIS TO OUR
MOM, ALL THE TIME.
WHEN SHE'S ANGRY AT US, WE WOULD
BE LIKE, "MOMMA, JUST A SECOND!"

The kids put the implants on and off while speaking. Gavin laughs.

Mark says AND WHEN THAT, WHEN YOU
TAKE THEM OUT, YOU CAN'T, YOU
CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING?
THERE'S NO SOUND AT ALL?

Ethan says NO.

Mark continues
WHEN I HEAR YOU GUYS TALKING,
YOU'RE PRONOUNCING YOUR WORDS SO
WELL.
WHY IS THAT?

Ethan says WE HAD, UHM, FUN WITH
ALL THESE, UHM, TEACHING
EXERCISES TO TELL, UHM, SO WE
WOULD HAVE... PRACTICE AND LEARN
HOW TO PRONOUNCE AND SPELL AND
HEAR WORDS.

Next, the boys and Mark move to the kitchen where they meet with Mom. She’s in her forties and has straight short blond hair down to the shoulders and wears a plaid shirt over a white blouse.

Ethan says GAVIN, YOU HAVE TO READ
EVERYTHING TO US AND YOU DECIDE.

Gavin holds a small device that looks like a phone.

He says OKAY.

Mark says GAVIN AND ETHAN, THE
ACTIVITIES THAT YOU DO TO
PRACTICE YOUR WORDS, ARE REALLY
FUN!
NOW, WHEN YOU LEARN A NEW WORD,
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR YOU TO
PRONOUNCE IT PROPERLY?

Ethan says PROBABLY TAKES FOUR
PRONOUNCES, BUT WHEN WE
PRONOUNCE IT WRONG, THAT WE'VE
ALREADY KNOW... THAT WE ALREADY
KNOW, BUT IS HARD.
UHM, OUR MOM ALWAYS SAYS, "WHAT
WAS THAT WORD?"
AND THEN WE SAY IT THE RIGHT
WAY.

Gavin picks a grape.

Mark says THERE YOU GO.

Mom says WHAT DID YOU SAY?

Gavin says PLASTIC BAG.

Mom says VERY GOOD.

Next, Mark and the boys meet again in the garden.

Mark says SO, UH, GAVIN, WHAT
WOULD YOU SAY TO A NEW FRIEND?
GIVE THEM SOME ADVICE, SO YOU
COULD TALK BETTER WITH EACH
OTHER?

Gavin says UHM, I'LL TELL THEM
TO, UHM, TURN AROUND TO ME,
LIKE, AND, LIKE, FACE ME AND
THEN, UHM, I COULD HEAR BETTER.

Mark says NOW, ETHAN, WHEN YOU'RE
PLAYING A SPORT LIKE BASEBALL,
AS WE KNOW THERE'S PLAYERS ALL
OVER THE PLACE.
SO, HOW DO YOU MAKE SPORTS
EASIER FOR YOU?
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHO'S TALKING TO
YOU?

Ethan says WE ALWAYS, UHM, MAKE
THE PERSON ALWAYS SHOUT AND
YELL, AND I'LL TURN AROUND AND
LOOK EVERYWHERE.

As they speak, a new clip shows them playing baseball.

Mark says TRIPLE PLAY!!!
DO YOUR PROCESSORS EVER FALL OFF
WHEN YOU'RE PLAYING SPORTS OR
RUNNING AROUND?

Ethan says UHM...

Gavin says SOMETIMES!

Mark says YEAH?
WHAT DO YOU DO IN THAT
SITUATION?

Ethan says UHM, BAT... WHEN WE'RE
BATTING AND WHEN WE RUN AND WE
SWING...

Mark says YEAH!

Ethan says OUR EAR ALWAYS STICKS
BECAUSE THERE... WE ALWAYS MAKE
SURE OUR HELMETS ARE ON TIGHT.

Mark says HE'S OUT, HE'S SAFE,
HE'S BALLIN'!
ALRIGHT!

Next, Mark and the kids play chess.

He says SO WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO
KNOW ABOUT YOU GUYS?

Ethan says I WANNA KNOW - I WANNA
TELL PEOPLE HOW HARD IT IS TO BE
DEAF AND HAVING A COCHLEAR
IMPLANT.

Mark says FOR SURE.

Gavin says SAME THING.

Mark says SAME THING?
SHALL WE GET BACK TO THE GAME?

Gavin says YES.

Mark says OKAY, WHOSE MOVE IS
IT?
IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S YOUR MOVE,
ETHAN, OKAY, LET'S SEE.

Now fast clips show Mark and the kids doing different activities.

Mark says ETHAN AND GAVIN ARE AMAZING!
THEY TAUGHT ME ABOUT COCHLEAR
IMPLANTS!
WE PLAYED SOME WORD GAMES,
ENJOYED BASEBALL AND EVEN FOUND
TIME FOR A POOL PARTY.
THREE!

The three of them jump in the pool.

Mark laughs and shouts IT'S COLD!

The show ends and the end slate reads "TVO, Copyright 2008, The Ontario Educational Communications Authority."
