Transcript: Thomas L. Wells P.S - Milk Bag Mats
The TVO Kids logo appears against an animated starry sky. The words "Super Citizens" appear next to a shooting star.
The announcer says IT'S TIME FOR
A TVOKIDS
SUPER CITIZENS
AWARD!
AND THE SUPER,
TERRIFIC
AND ROCKING
AWARD GOES TO
A picture appears with the caption "Super Students. Thomas L. Wells P.S."
The announcer says THE SUPER STUDENTS
AT THOMAS L. WELLS
PUBLIC SCHOOL.
A caption reads "Nirujah. Milk Bag Mats for Charity."
Nirujah is around 12, with long straight brown hair and she wears a striped tank top.
She says MY NAME IS NIRUJAH.
AND WE USE MILK
BAGS TO MAKE MATS
FOR PEOPLE IN THIRD
WORLD COUNTRIES.
WE WANTED TO MAKE
THESE MATS BECAUSE
PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES
DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE BEDS.
THEY SLEEP ON THE
GROUND, ON THE DIRT.
AND IT'S
REALLY DIRTY.
WE HAVE STATIONS WHERE
KIDS WASH THE BAGS,
CUT THE BAGS.
WHERE WE LOOP THE BAGS
AND WHERE WE WEAVE
THE STRIPS TOGETHER.
IT'S KIND OF LIKE
AN ASSEMBLY LINE.
Clips show images of the students working on the mats.
Nirujah says THE COOLEST THINGS
ABOUT THESE MATS
ARE THAT YOU'RE
RECYCLING.
AND YOU'RE HELPING
SOMEBODY AT THE SAME TIME.
THEY'RE ACTUALLY SOFT
AND ARE WATERPROOF
AND BUG PROOF.
THESE MATS LAST FOR
ABOUT 25 YEARS.
AND THEY'RE REALLY
EASY TO CLEAN.
A caption reads "The students at Thomas L. Wells Public School need 380 milk bags to make one single mat!"
Nirujah says SO FAR WE'VE
MADE 17 MATS.
WOW!
AFTER WE MAKE A
WHOLE MAT,
WE WILL GIVE IT TO
LOCAL CHURCHES.
THE CHURCHES WILL
GIVE IT TO AIRLINES.
AND THE AIRLINES WILL
TAKE IT TO COUNTRIES
SUCH AS HAITI, KENYA,
AND THE PHILIPPINES.
IT'S IMPORTANT
TO HELP OTHERS
BECAUSE WE ARE A
DEVELOPED COUNTRY
AND WE HAVE A LOT
MORE THAN THEY DO.
YOU FEEL SATISFIED THAT
YOU'RE GIVING THE MAT
TO SOMEBODY WHO
DOESN'T HAVE A MAT.
AND REALLY NEEDS IT.
The announcer says CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU ARE ALL SUPER
CITIZENS!
