Transcript: Stars
Two puppets, a boy named Howie and his monkey named Baboo, sit on the grass and watch a bee fly over a flower. They watch the sky change from day to night. Then they fly to space in a rocket. They rotate their heads as they watch clothes spin in a dryer. Then they watch a snail crawl on a big leaf and then they stand outside in the rain sheltered by an umbrella. The sky turns sunny again and a rainbow appears as Howie and Baboo take a hot air balloon ride.
The title of the show reads "Now you know."
The name of the episode reads "What is a star?"
A voice says TWINKLE TWINKLE.
Howie and Baboo are transported to a strange planet. They wear Star Trek characters' costumes.
Howie says CAPTAIN HOWIE OF
THE STARSHIP ANSWERPRISE
REPORTING FROM PLANET Q
WITH MY TRUSTY PILOT BABOO.
Baboo says HOWDY DO!
Howie says WE'RE ON A DISTANT PLANET
AS PART OF OUR ONGOING MISSION
TO EXPLORE THE STARS.
He looks up and says SPEAKING OF WHICH,
THEY SURE ARE BEAUTIFUL.
Baboo says THEY'RE NICE.
(BEEPING)
CAPTAIN HOWIE
HERE.
Mom says ADMIRAL MOM HERE,
REPORTING THAT IT'S
TIME FOR DINNER.
Howie says I'M SORRY,
ADMIRAL,
BUT BABOO AND I ARE
NOT ON EARTH RIGHT NOW.
WE'LL HAVE TO DELAY THAT
MISSION UNTIL OUR RETURN
YEAH.
Mom says THAT'S AN ORDER, HOWIE.
Howie says YES, MA'AM.
TWO THE BEAM BACK, PLEASE.
(SIGH)
They now get teleported to the backyard of their house.
Howie says DON'T YOU JUST LOVE
LOOKING AT THE STARS, BABOO?
Baboo says OH YEAH.
Howie says DO YOU EVER WONDER
WHAT A STAR IS?
Baboo says SOMETIMES.
Howie says YEAH, ME TOO.
They suddenly turn to each other.
Howie says ARE YOU THINKING
WHAT I'M THINKING?
Baboo says I THINK SO.
(LAUGH)
Howie says TIME TO PUT OUT...
A QUESTION ALERT!
Baboo says WAPOW!
Howie hits his watch. A question mark appears.
Howie says QUICK,
TO THE -
M HOWIE!
Howie says RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT.
DINNER FIRST...
Howie whispers THEN
SECRET HEADQUARTERS.
Baboo says OH YEAH.
Howie says LET'S GO!
Baboo says OKAY.
At the tree house, Howie sits at the computer and says LET'S SEE WHO ANSWERED
THE QUESTION ALERT, BABOO.
Baboo says OKAY.
Howie pushes a button.
Children appear on a split screen and say HI, HOWIE. HI, BABOO.
Howie says HI THERE,
QUESTIONEERS!
Baboo says HELLOO!
Howie says THANKS SO MUCH FOR ANSWERING
THE QUESTION ALERT.
TODAY'S QUESTION IS
WHAT'S A STAR?
Baboo says TWINKLE TWINKLE,
LITTLE STAR...
(HUMS REST OF TUNE)
A little girl with red rimmed glasses says THEY'RE MADE OUT OF GLOW.
A boy in a striped T-shirt says I THINK STARS ARE
MADE OF HARD STONE.
A girl in a gingham hat says A STAR IS A SHINY THING
THAT COMES AT NIGHT.
A boy in an orange T-shirt says A STAR IS A BIG BALL OF GAS.
A girl in a hot pink shirt says A STAR IS LIKE
A LITTLE TINY
SUN UP IN SPACE.
Howie says GREAT ANSWERS,
QUESTIONEERS.
I WONDER IF THERE'S
AN EXPERT
WHO CAN HELP US
ANSWER TODAY'S QUESTION.
A woman appears on the screen.
She says HI, HOWIE.
HI, BABOO.
Howie says HEY LOOK, IT'S JEN!
JEN'S AN ASTRONOMER.
THAT MEANS SHE'S A SCIENTIST
WHO STUDIES STARS
AND OUTER SPACE STUFF.
Jen has long straight light brown hair in a low ponytail and wears a black blazer.
She says I HEAR YOU HAVE A QUESTION
ABOUT STARS.
Howie says YEAH.
BABOO AND I
WERE WONDERING,
WELL, WHAT'S A STAR?
Jen says GREAT QUESTION.
WHY DON'T YOU MEET ME AT
THE OBSERVATORY
AND WE CAN LOOK AT
SOME STARS TOGETHER.
Howie gasps and says GREAT PLAN.
TWO THE BEAM OUT!
Baboo nods and says MAKE IT SO.
Howie meets Jen at the observatory and says HI, JEN!
Baboo says HELLOO.
Jen says HI, YOU TWO.
WELCOME TO THE OBSERVATORY.
Howie says WHOA,
COOL TELESCOPE!
Jen says THANKS.
DO YOU WANT TO TAKE A LOOK?
Howie says WE SURE DO!
Baboo says OH YEAH!
Jen ALRIGHT,
LET'S GO.
Howie says ALRIGHT,
TELESCOPE!
Howie looks through he eyepiece and says WHOA,
WHAT A VIEW!
Baboo says I WANNA SEE!
I WANNA SEE!
Howie says OKAY, GO AHEAD,
BABOO.
Baboo says OOOOOH, WOW!
Jen says THERE'S SO MANY STARS
IN THE NIGHT SKY
THAT SCIENTISTS ACTUALLY
PUT THESE STARS INTO GROUPS.
THESE GROUPS, THEY'RE CALLED
CONSTELLATIONS.
Howie says JEN, HOW DO THEY KNOW
HOW TO GROUP THESE STARS?
Baboo says YEAH!
Jen says WELL, IF YOU LOOK AT
THE NIGHT SKY, RIGHT THERE,
YOU'LL SEE SOME OF THE STARS
THAT MAKE UP
THE URSA MAJOR
CONSTELLATION.
Howie says BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW
WHAT GROUP IT IS?
Jen says IF YOU CONNECT THE DOTS,
YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE
THAT IT MAKES A SHAPE.
Howie says OH, I SEE IT, I SEE IT!
IT LOOKS LIKE A BIG POT!
EXACTLY - WE CALL THAT BIG POT
"THE BIG DIPPER."
SO WHAT IS A STAR ANYWAY?
Jen says A STAR IS A GREAT BIG
BALL OF FIERY GAS
SHINING BRIGHTLY
IN OUTER SPACE.
Baboo says LIKE THE SUN?
Jen says GREAT OBSERVATION,
BABOO.
Baboo says THANK YOU!
Jen says OUR SUN IS ALSO A STAR.
Howie says WAIT A SECOND -
BUT THEY'RE SO DIFFERENT!
THE SUN IS HUGE,
AND STARS ARE SO SMALL.
Jen says WELL, THERE'S A SIMPLE
EXPLANATION FOR THAT.
An animation shows the Earth rotating around the sun.
Jen says OUR SUN LOOKS BIGGER
BECAUSE IT IS MUCH,
MUCH CLOSER TO US
THAN ALL OTHER STARS.
OTHER STARS ARE
SO, SO FAR AWAY
THAT WE ONLY SEE THEM AS
TINY LITTLE POINTS OF LIGHT.
BUT JUST LIKE THE SUN,
THEY'RE ALL GREAT BIG BRIGHTLY-
SHINING BALLS OF FIERY GAS.
Now Jen holds two spiky balls and says IT'S LIKE THIS,
HOWIE -
PRETEND THAT BABOO
IS THE SUN.
I'M THE SUN!
AND NOW PRETEND THAT
I'M ANOTHER STAR.
She gives one ball to Baboo.
Baboo says OKAY.
She walks to the back of the room and says WHICH ONE
LOOKS BIGGER?
Howie says WELL, BABOO -
I MEAN THE SUN.
THE SUN
LOOKS BIGGER.
Jen says THEY'RE THE SAME,
EVEN THOUGH THEY
LOOK DIFFERENT.
Howie says OH, I GET IT.
SO A STAR IS BASICALLY
A BIG FIERY BALL OF GAS,
JUST LIKE OUR SUN.
AND THE REASON STARS
AT NIGHT LOOK SMALLER
IS BECAUSE THEY'RE SUPER,
SUPER FAR AWAY FROM US.
Jen says YOU GOT IT,
HOWIE!
Howie turns to the camera and says HOW ABOUT YOU?
DO YOU SEE NOW
WHAT A STAR IS?
YOU DO?
GREAT!
WELL NOW YOU KNOW!
Baboo says WELL NOW YOU KNOW!
Baboo drops the ball and says I DROPPED THE SUN.
Howie says YEAH.
(CHUCKLE)
They sing a song that goes ASK ASK ASK
ASK A QUESTION
FIND FIND FIND
FIND AN ANSWER
NOW NOW NOW NOW
NOW YOU KNOW
CONCLUSION!

Howie lies on the grass in his backyard and says AND REMEMBER -
YOU CAN'T GET AN ANSWER
UNLESS YOU ASK A QUESTION.

QUESTIONS, 'KAY?

AREN'T STARS
BEAUTIFUL, BABOO?
Baboo says OH YEAH.
