A child says, WHEE!

TVO Kids and Apartment Eleven Productions and Fabrique Fantastique, Original.

[Child giggles, upbeat music plays, pop]

Eight-year-old Ella, who has curly black hair, runs down a staircase carrying a toy rocket ship. She wears a blue-green space suit and a helmet with animal ears.
[Children laugh, rock music plays]
Ella enters a living room and gives her little sister, Tilly, the rocket ship.
A singer sings, COME WITH ME TO THE STARS
THE GALAXY IS OURS!
Ella’s mom picks up Tilly and smiles as Ella runs outside. Outside the house, in outer space, Ella runs past her dad.

Children say, LET'S GO!

Singers sing, LOOK AT ALL THE WONDER,
INTER-STELLAR.

Ella flies her moon scooter over a planet with Madhu, a blue and green alien, and Slippy, a black-haired boy who flies a red space racer.

[Glitch whirrs]

Singers sing, LOOK UP SO MUCH SPLENDOUR,
INTER-STELLAR.

[Background shouting]

Singers sing, LOOK OUT FOR ADVENTURE
COME EXPLORE THE MILKY WAY!
Ella and Slippy explore a planet together with Maggie, a blue star. Elsewhere in space, Slippy and Madhu look startled.

They say, WOAH!

They dodge Ella and her moon scooter.

The singer sings, COME EXPLORE THE MILKY WAY!

Ella and her family sit on a spacecraft.

The singer sings, LOOK UP!
INTERSTELLAR ELLA.

Text reads, “TVO Kids presents Interstellar Ella.”

In space, Madhu floats as a small glowing pink ball.

[Upbeat music plays, alarm blares, Ella yawns]

In the home station, Ella lies in bed and turns off her alarm. She throws her blanket aside and jumps out of bed.

[Rustling]

Madhu uncurls and stretches.

[Madhu yawns]

In the home station, Ella brushes her teeth.

[Scrubbing, gargling, water splashes, Ella sighs]

Ella says, FRESH AND CLEAN.

In space, Madhu swishes liquid in their mouth.

[Bubbling]

Madhu says, OH, FRESH AND CLEAN.

A com-bubble appears in front of Madhu.

In the bubble, Ella says, HAPPY HUMAN DAY MADHU.

In space, Madhu says, HUMAN DAY.
WAIT, WHAT'S HUMAN DAY?

Ella says, ONLY THE BEST DAY OF THE YEAR.
MOM AND DAD HAVE BEEN
PREPARING DINNER ALL WEEK.
IT'S GOING TO BE DEELISH.

Madhu says, OOH! DEELISH!
THAT SOUNDS DELICIOUS.

Ella says, YOU BET.
TILLY AND I ARE DECORATING
THE HOUSE ALL DAY,
SO DINNER WILL BE PERFECT.

AND SLIPPY'S WITH HIS FAMILY
GETTING READY FOR THE MAIN
EVENT. A BIG COM-BUBBLE
LIGHT SHOW!

[Gentle music plays]

Madhu says, OH, SO YOU'RE BOTH
GOING TO BE HOME WITH YOUR FAMILIES
ALL DAY?

Ella says, YEP.
HUMAN DAY IS ALL ABOUT FAMILY.

Madhu says, OKAY.
I'LL FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO.

Ella says, NO, THAT'S WHY I'M CALLING.
DO YOU WANT TO COME
FOR HUMAN DAY DINNER?

Madhu asks, YOU WANT ME TO COME?

[Madhu cheers, upbeat music plays]

Madhu says, I'M SO EXCITED.

OH! THIS IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT OCCASION.
WHAT DO YOU DO AT THIS DINNER?
CAN I HELP, OR PREPARE SOMETHING?

Ella says, EVERYTHING'S DONE.
JUST BRING YOUR BEST SELF.
IT'LL BE PERFECT.

Madhu turns orange. Their face and feet remain green.

Ella says, DON'T BE NERVOUS MADHU.

I'LL SEND MAGGIE IN SHARE
MODE TO HELP YOU GET READY.
OKAY? SEE YOU SOON.

The com-bubble pops. Madhu turns green and then changes back to orange.

Madhu repeats, BEST SELF?
ARE YOU IN HERE?

Madhu searches in a crate filled with toys. They turn the crate upside down.

[Rattling]

A small pod flies to Madhu. They open the pod, take out a bracelet, and put it on. Maggie, the star-shaped artificial intelligence hologram, floats in front of Madhu.

Maggie says, HELLO, MADHU.
WHAT CAN I HELP YOU WITH?

Madhu says, EVERYTHING.
I'M SO NERVOUS ABOUT THIS DINNER.

Maggie says, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND.
YOU HAVE ATTENDED MANY DINNERS
AT THE RYDER HOME SPACE STATION.

Madhu says, BUT NOT A HUMAN DAY DINNER.

IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.
ELLA SAID IT'LL BE PERFECT.
SO I WANT TO BE THE PERFECT
GUEST. ANY IDEAS?

Maggie creates a screen that shows a woman wearing a dress.

[Whirring, gentle music plays]

Maggie says, MY DATABANK.
SAY A CELEBRATION
LIKE THIS CALLS FOR DRESSING UP
IN MANY HUMAN CULTURES.

Madhu says, THEY ALL LOOK REALLY DIFFERENT.

Maggie says, THAT IS BECAUSE
DIFFERENT CULTURES
HAVE DIFFERENT TRADITIONS.

SOME MARCH WITH LANTERNS,
WHILE OTHERS SMASH PLATES. OPA!

[Beeping]

Madhu says, SMASH PLATES?
GOT IT.

OH, AND WE NEED CLOTHES.
FANCY CLOTHES.

Madhu flies behind a couch and jumps up wearing a striped tunic, a dark yellow hard hat, and a light brown belt.

[Upbeat music plays]

Madhu says, TA-DA!

Maggie says, USUALLY ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS,
GUESTS GREET THE HOST
WITH A FIRM HANDSHAKE.

Madhu says, EASY PEASY.

Madhu reaches forward and pretends to shake hands.

[Bubbling]

Maggie says, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY,
DO NOT BE LATE. SO GRAB YOUR GIFT
AND LET US GO.

Madhu says, OH, NO.
I DO NOT HAVE A GIFT TO BRING.
BUT I HAVE THE PERFECT IDEA
FOR A GIFT.

Madhu stands on the cratered surface of the moon.

Madhu says, EVERYBODY LOVES A GOOD MOON
ROCK, RIGHT?

Maggie says, CHECKING.

Maggie projects a screen. On the screen, a girl looks at an inuksuk, stacked rocks that resemble a person.

[Beeping, gentle music plays]

Maggie says, SOME CULTURES DO USE
ROCKS FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS
LIKE THE INUIT WHO USE STONE
FORMATIONS TO MARK A SACRED AREA.

Madhu picks up a rock.

Madhu says, THIS ONE IS NICE.
OH, THIS IS A GOOD ONE TOO.
OH, HOW DO I CHOOSE?

Maggie says, THE SURFACE OF THE MOON IS MADE
UP OF TWO MAIN TYPES OF ROCK.

THE DARK ROCKS ARE MADE
FROM COLD LAVA AND THE LIGHT
ROCKS ARE FROM ASTEROID IMPACTS.

Madhu gathers an armful of rocks.

Madhu says, ACTUALLY, ELLA
HAS TONS OF MOON ROCKS.

SHE SAID I NEED TO BE MY BEST
SELF, WHICH MEANS I NEED TO
BRING THE BEST GIFT.

Madhu drops the rocks.

[Clattering]

Madhu says, WE'LL HANG OUT LATER, FRIENDS.

WHAT NOW? I NEED A GOOD GIFT.

[Madhu creaks]

Maggie says, AT CELEBRATIONS,
HUMANS OFTEN GIVE FOOD
AND BEVERAGES AS GIFTS.

Madhu says, FOOD. GREAT IDEA.
I COULD BRING ICE CREAM OR
SAMOSAS OR SOME SAMOSA-CREAM.

Maggie says, SAMOSA-CREAM IS NOT A DISH
IN MY DATABANKS.

Maggie projects a screen showing a bowl. A lemon, spice grinder, and saltshaker float over the bowl.

Maggie says, MOST HUMAN DISHES ARE FLAVORED
WITH BASIC THINGS. ACID SPICE, SALT.

Madhu says, OH, I KNOW A SALTY PLACE.

In space, Maggie flies beside Madhu.

[Upbeat music plays, Madhu hums]

Madhu says, LOOK MAGGIE. IT'S CERES.
HI ASTEROID FRIEND.

Madhu waves at Ceres.

Maggie says, ACTUALLY, SINCE CERES IS SO
MUCH BIGGER THAN ITS NEIGHBORS,
IT IS CONSIDERED A DWARF PLANET.

Madhu says, OKAY, HI DWARF PLANET, FRIEND.
SHINY SPOTS. THOSE ARE SALT RIGHT?

Madhu says, YES.
CERES HAS SALT DEPOSITS
LEFTOVER FROM LIQUID
THAT EVAPORATED AFTER
BUBBLING UP TO THE SURFACE.

[Madhu creaks]

Madhu says, YOU REALLY ARE UNIQUE
CERES FRIEND. THIS SALT WILL BE THE
PERFECT GIFT.

In the home station, Ella and Tilly hang a string of paper dolls. Ella runs to the front door, and it automatically slides open.

[Footsteps, whooshing, gentle music plays]

Madhu says, HAPPY HUMAN DAY!

Ella says, WOW MADHU!
NICE SHIRT!

Madhu gives Celeste a large salt crystal. Celeste steadies herself as she takes the heavy gift.

Celeste says, OH, UM...
THANKS, MADHU.

WE CAN USE THIS
WHEN OUR SALT SHAKER RUNS OUT.

Tom, Ella’s dad, puts a full saltshaker on the table.

[Clunk, Madhu giggles uncomfortably]

Tilly asks, MAY I TAKE YOUR HAT MADHU?

Madhu gives their hat to Tilly.

Tom says, OH, HEY, MADHU.
HAPPY HUMAN DAY.

Tom holds his hand out towards Madhu.

Madhu says, HELLO, MR. RYDER.

Tom says, WHOA, WHOA, WHOA.

Madhu shakes Tom’s hand enthusiastically, making Tom bounce up and down.

[Madhu creaks]

Tom says, YOU REALLY PUT THE
SHAKE IN HANDSHAKE MADHU.

[Ella laughs]

Tilly says, MY TURN, MY TURN!

Madhu holds Tilly’s left arm with their right hand and gently shakes Tilly, bouncing her in mid-air.

Tilly says, HAHAHA. WHOA.

Tilly runs to Ella and shakes her hand.

[Happy music plays]

Tilly says, I SHAKE HANDS LIKE MADHU NOW.

[Madhu giggles, gentle music plays]

Tom asks, COULD YOU SET THE TABLE, PLEASE?

Tom gives Ella a stack of dishes.

[Rattling]

Madhu says, OH, I’LL HELP!

Madhu smashes a plate on the floor.

[Glass shatters]

Madhu says, TA-DA!

[Tilly gasps]

Tilly picks up a plate, and Tom takes it away from her.

[Rattle]

Tom says, TILLY!

Tom shakes his head.

Madhu says, OH. IS THIS NOT ONE
OF YOUR TRADITIONS?

[Ella chuckles uncomfortably]

Ella says, NOT REALLY.
BUT IT'S OKAY.

Tom says, WE SHOULD SIT.
DINNER'S READY.

Madhu turns from green to orange. Ella hugs Madhu's right arm.

Ella says, I'M SO HAPPY YOU'RE HERE.

Tilly hugs Madhu’s left arm.

Tilly says, ME TOO!

Madhu turns green.

At the dinner table, Madhu sits on a banquette between Ella and Tilly. Celeste sets a plate of food on the table.

[Rustling, gentle music plays]

Madhu mutters, I HAVE TO BE THE PERFECT GUEST.
I'VE ALREADY MESSED
SOME THINGS UP.

Maggie floats out of the bracelet.

[Whirring]

Maggie whispers, JUST BE EXTRA POLITE
AND YOU WILL BE FINE.

Celeste says, ELLA, COULD YOU PASS
THE CHUTNEY, PLEASE?

Madhu picks up the chutney and stretches their arms to Celeste.

Celeste says, THAT STRETCH SURE
COMES IN HANDY.

Tom asks, CAN I HAVE SOME NAAN, PLEASE?

Tom startles as Madhu stretches and presents the bowl of naan bread.

Tilly says, I WANT BABGANOUSH, MASALA
DOSA AND KIMCHI.

Madhu gathers dishes and bowls for Tilly.

[Clattering]

Madhu says, OOPS!

Madhu knocks over an empty glass, and Ella catches it.

[Ella gasps]

Madhu’s arms are tied in a knot. Madhu unravels their arms and puts down the dishes.

Madhu says, OH. OH.

[Everyone laughs]

Ella asks Madhu, WANT SOME DOUBLES?
THEY'RE MY FAVORITE SANDWICHES
MADE FROM CURRIED CHICKPEAS.

[Crunching]

Madhu says, MMM. YUM. YUM. MMM.
MMM. MMM. OOH. OH.

[Madhu creaks]

Madhu bites a lemon.

Madhu says THIS YELLOW THING DOES
WEIRD STUFF WITH MY MOUTH.

Ella says, OH, NO.

DID YOU EAT THE ENTIRE LEMON?
THAT'S A WAY TOO SOUR
MADHU.

[Tilly laughs]

Tilly bites a lemon.

Tilly says, EW.

[Ella, Celeste, and Tom laugh]

Madhu picks up a punch bowl and drinks from it. Everyone watches Madhu.

[Clatter]

Madhu says, OH...
THIS ISN'T A BIG
GLASS FOR ME?

Ella ladles fruit punch into a glass and offers it to Madhu.

After dinner, Tom places dishes in the sink. Celeste carries the punch bowl to him.

[Clattering, gentle music plays]

Tom says, IT'S TIME
FOR THE MAIN EVENT.

Ella and Tilly cheer, YES!
COM-BUBBLE PARTY!

Tilly says, I'LL TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
SO WE CAN SEE THEM.

Tilly runs to two switches. The top switch has a lightbulb icon, and the bottom has an apple icon. Tilly flips the bottom switch downward.

[Click]

Tilly says, OOPS.

Everyone floats into the air, with dishes and cutlery floating around them.

Ella says, OH, NO TILLS.
YOU TURNED OFF THE GRAVITY.

Tilly says, WHOOPSIES.

Celeste says, GIRLS, SAVE
EVERYTHING YOU CAN.

Ella floats to a plate and grabs it.

Madhu says I CAN HELP WITH THIS.

Madhu stretches their arm to the gravity switch.

Ella, Celeste, and Tom shout, WAIT!

Madhu turns on the gravity, and the Ryders and their dishes fall to the floor.

[Click, crashing, Madhu creaks, tense music plays]

Madhu says, UH-OH. I'M SORRY.

I SHOULDN'T HAVE COME
TO YOUR HUMAN DAY CELEBRATION.

I'M NOT HUMAN.

Madhu flies out of the station.

On Ceres, Madhu says, WE HAVE A
LOT IN COMMON CERES FRIEND.
WE'RE DIFFERENT FROM THE REST.

MAGGIE, CAN YOU FIND ME
A CRATER TO HIDE IN?

Ella shouts, MADHU!

On Ceres, Ella stands in front of her moon scooter. She walks to Madhu.

[Footsteps crunch, gentle music plays]

Madhu says, ELLA?
HOW DID YOU FIND ME?

Ella says, MAGGIE'S STILL IN SHARE MODE.
YOU'RE NEVER ALONE
WHEN YOU HAVE MAGGIE.

Ella uses her space boots to fly to Madhu. She sits beside Madhu.

Ella asks, WHY DID YOU LEAVE THE PARTY?

Madhu says, BECAUSE I MISSED IT ALL UP.
I'M NOT HUMAN.
I'M NOT LIKE YOUR FAMILY.

Ella exclaims, WHAT? NO WAY.
HUMANS ARE ALL DIFFERENT.
UNIQUE.

MY MOM SAYS THAT'S
WHAT HUMAN DAY IS ALL ABOUT.

CELEBRATING OUR UNIQUENESS
AND YOU'RE THE MOST UNIQUE
OF ALL MADHU.

YOU ARE MY FAMILY.

Madhu asks, SO I DIDN'T RUIN HUMAN DAY?

Ella says, OF COURSE NOT.
SOMETHING ALWAYS HAPPENS
AT HUMAN DAY DINNER.

LAST YEAR, I SPILLED CURRY ALL OVER MOM.

AND THE YEAR BEFORE THAT, DAD ACCIDENTLY
SENT HOME STATION TO SATURN.

[Ella giggles]

Ella asks, NOW, WILL YOU PLEASE
COME BACK WITH ME?

IT'S NOT A FAMILY DINNER
WITHOUT THE WHOLE FAMILY.

Madhu says, MAYBE I CAN BRING
ONE OF MY FAMILY'S TRADITIONS
TO THE DINNER.

Back at the home station, Ella, Celeste, and Tilly watch Madhu. Madhu nods at Maggie, who changes into a banjo. Madhu curls into a glowing ball and spins.

[Upbeat music plays]

Celeste says, MADHU, THIS IS LOVELY.

Ella says, THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF OUR HUMAN
DAY TRADITIONS FROM NOW ON.

Tilly asks, WILL YOU PLEASE COME FOR DINNER.
AGAIN NEXT YEAR, MADHU?

Ella shouts, DANCE PARTY!

Ella, Celeste, and Tilly dance. A com-bubble appears in front of Ella. In the bubble, Slippy dances.

[Beeping]

Ella says, OH! SLIPPY'S COM-BUBBLE
PARTY IS STARTING. LET'S GO.

Com-bubbles float in space. Madhu glows and spins in the centre of the cluster of bubbles.

[Rock music plays]

The singer sings, COME WITH ME TO THE STARS
THE GALAXY IS OURS!

Children say, LET'S GO!

Singers sing, LOOK AT ALL THE WONDER,
INTER-STELLAR.

LOOK UP SO MUCH SPLENDOUR,
INTER-STELLAR.

LOOK OUT FOR ADVENTURE
COME EXPLORE THE MILKY WAY!

LOOK UP!
INTERSTELLAR ELLA.
