Birds gather in a forest.
Odo, the owl, says,
HERE I COME!
[Bush rustles]
Odo, a small brown owl with white markings, runs past a blue bird, chickens, a peacock, and yellow birds.
Odo sings, ODO
Birds sing,
ODO, ODO, ODO
[Cluck]
Odo jumps into a muddy puddle with two toucans.
[Splash]
Odo leaps on a fallen tree trunk with Doodle, a small blue bird. Flamingos pop their heads out of the trunk.
Birds sing,
ODO, ODO, ODO
Odo jumps on a tree stump in the middle of the forest. The birds surround him.
The title reads, “Odo”.
Odo winks.
[Chimes]
Text reads, “Sleepover”.
Odo’s parents take Odo to the forest camp. Odo looks upset.
Odo’s mom says,
HAVE A LOVELY DAY
AT CAMP, ODO.
Odo yawns.
He replies,
I'LL TRY, MOM.
BUT I'M PRETTY TIRED.
Odo’s dad says,
OH, DEAR! COULDN'T YOU SLEEP
LAST NIGHT, ODO?
Odo replies,
I COULDN'T STAY AWAKE!
I TRIED REALLY HARD
TO STAY UP ALL NIGHT,
JUST LIKE THE REST
OF THE OWLS,
BUT I JUST FELL ASLEEP.
Odo’s mom hugs Odo.
She says,
OH, ODO.
Odo walks away from his mom
He says,
SOMETIMES, I WONDER
WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE
TO STAY UP ALL NIGHT,
LIKE YOU AND DAD.
Odo falls asleep in a bush.
[Snoring]
Odo’s dad replies,
MAYBE IF YOU HAD
SOME FRIENDS OVER,
YOU WOULDN'T FALL ASLEEP.
Odo wakes up.
He asks,
A SLEEPOVER?
THAT'S A GREAT IDEA, DAD!
YOU'RE THE BEST!
WE'LL STAY UP ALL NIGHT!
Odo’s mom says,
JUST A FEW FRIENDS, ODO.
Odo enters the forest camp. He passes the camp leader, a bald eagle with a green hat and an orange handkerchief around her neck. The camp leader walks to her log cabin.
The camp leader says,
GOOD MORNING, ODO.
Odo says, MORNING!
The camp leader looks at the box.
She says,
A NEW DELIVERY OF PEACHES!
I'LL JUST SET THEM HERE.
The camp leader puts down the peaches and grabs her back.
She says,
MY BACK! THESE PEACHES
ARE HEAVY.
Odo rushes to Doodle.
Odo says,
DOODLE, GUESS WHAT?
I'M HAVING A SLEEPOVER TONIGHT!
Doodle asks,
A SLEEPOVER?
WOW! WHO ARE YOU INVITING?
Odo answers,
DEFINITELY YOU!
BUT I'M NOT SURE WHO ELSE.
UNTIL I KNOW,
WE SHOULD KEEP IT QUIET.
The campers surround Odo and Doodle.
The small yellow birds sing,
SLEEPOVER?
ME TOO
Odo replies,
OKAY! OKAY! YOU CAN ALL COME.
IT'LL BE THE BEST PARTY EVER.
WE'LL STAY UP ALL NIGHT
AND YOU CAN ALL BE
HONORARY OWLS!
TWIT, TWOO!
The campers cheer,
TWIT, TWOO! TWIT, TWOO!
Later, lights glow inside Odo’s house while it rains. Odo looks out the window.
He says,
QUICK, MOM!
THEY'LL BE HERE SOON!
Odo’s mom and dad prepare snacks in the kitchen. Odo rushes to them.
Odo’s mom says,
THERE WE GO, ODO.
ALL SORTS OF PARTY SNACKS!
WILD BERRY JELLY, POPCORN,
FLAPJACKS, FRUIT KEBABS,
FRESHLY SQUEEZED LEMONADE
AND NUTS.
Odo replies,
YUM! THIS IS AMAZING!
ESPECIALLY THE FLAPJACKS.
He eats a flapjack.
Odo’s dad says,
IF YOU KEEP EATING THEM
THERE'LL NONE FOR ANYBODY ELSE.
[Knock at door]
Odo shouts,
THEY'RE HERE!
Odo’s dad eats a flapjack.
[Sighs]
Odo’s dad carries snacks out of the kitchen.
Odo opens his front door. The other campers stand outside.
Doodle says,
HI, ODO!
Odo replies,
COME IN! FOLLOW ME!
WAIT TILL YOU SEE!
Odo leads the campers inside. They hurry through the kitchen and up the stairs.
[Chattering happily]
Odo’s mom reads in the study. Odo’s dad joins her. A pitcher of lemonade sits on a table.
Odo’s mom says,
IT'S GOING TO BE
A LONG NIGHT.
Odo’s dad picks up a glass of lemonade and sits down.
He says,
GOOD THING WE'RE NOCTURNAL.
[Chuckles]
Meanwhile, Odo and the campers enter Odo’s bedroom. A tent, banners, and snacks are set up inside.
The campers say,
WHOA, ODO!
Doodle adds,
IT'S MAGICAL!
The green hummingbirds fly over the tray of snacks.
One of them says,
SNACKS! YUM.
Doodle and Thelma, a red bird, says,
CAN THIS PARTY GET ANY BETTER?
Odo replies,
IT CAN WITH SOME PARTY GAMES!
TWIT, TWOO!
The campers say,
TWIT, TWOO!
Later, Odo holds a fox tail next to an easel.
He says,
OKAY, OWLS. FIRST GAME,
STICK THE TAIL ON REGGIE!
A picture of Reggie, the red fox, leans on the easel. One of the hummingbirds places the fox tail on Reggie’s nose.
The hummingbird says,
THERE! CLOSE ENOUGH!
[All giggle]
A vinyl record spins as a needle is placed on it.
Odo says,
MUSICAL STATUES!
WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS,
STAND TOTALLY STILL.
[Folk music playing]
Doodle, Odo, and the other campers dance.
[Record scratches]
The music stops. The hummingbirds and the small yellow birds fall to the floor.
[Canaries, mockingbirds grunt]
[All laugh]
Later, Odo covers his eyes. The other campers hide in his room.
Odo counts,
SEVEN, EIGHT...
UH, WHATEVER COMES
AFTER EIGHT...TEN!
READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!
Odo looks around. He finds the yellow canaries hiding under a lampshade.
Odo says,
HA! GOTCHA!
The canaries reply,
OH...
The hummingbirds hide behind the drapes.
Odo says,
UMM.
He pulls back the drapes and finds the hummingbirds.
Odo says,
AH! HA-HA!
He pulls up a red rug and finds Thelma.
Thelma says, OH.
Odo replies,
YES!
OOOH.
I FOUND EVERYBODY EXCEPT DOODLE.
HMM. HA!
Doodle eats popcorn in the tent.
She says,
YOU FOUND ME! TWIT, TWOO.
[Giggles]
Later, rain continues to fall on Odo’s house.
Odo asks,
WHAT NEXT? MAYBE WE CAN
TELL JOKES, OR STORIES.
Thelma yawns.
She replies,
IT IS GETTING LATE.
MAYBE WE SHOULD SLEEP?
Odo says,
SLEEP? US OWLS DON'T SLEEP!
[Yawns]
Thelma says,
I DONT THINK I CAN STAY AWAKE
AND A STORY MIGHT JUST
MAKE ME EVEN MORE SLEEPY.
Odo turns off the lights. He walks to the window as lightning strikes.
Odo replies,
NOT IF IT'S A SPOOKY STORY.
A SPOOKY STORY ABOUT, UMM...
THE DODO OF THE NIGHT
WHO CAME KNOCKING ON THE DOOR!
[Knock at door]
[Gasps]
[All scream]
The campers look scared.
Odo says,
THE DODO OF THE NIGHT!
IT ALWAYS KNOCKS THREE TIMES!
The campers look out the window. A large figure wearing a green raincoat stands at the front door.
[Knocking]
Odo’s parent opens the door.
Thelma says,
OH, NO! I THOUGHT DODOS
WERE EXTINCT!
The figure carries a wooden walking stick into Odo’s house.
A canary says,
IT'S INSIDE! WHAT DO WE DO?
Odo replies, QUICK, HIDE!
A camper says, OH, NO!
The campers hide in Odo’s bedroom. Downstairs, the camp leader takes off the hood of her green raincoat. She meets Odo’s mom and dad in the kitchen.
Odo’s mom asks,
ARE YOU SURE
YOU DON'T WANT
ANY HELP, CAMP LEADER,
WHAT WITH YOUR SORE BACK?
The camp leader replies,
NO, NO. I'LL BE FINE.
ODO LEFT HIS BAG AT CAMP
AND I JUST WANTED
TO DROP IT OFF ON MY WAY HOME.
IS HE STILL AWAKE?
The camp leader places Odo’s bag on the kitchen table.
Odo’s mom says,
OH, YES.
HE AND HIS FRIENDS
ARE HAVING A SLEEPOVER.
FIRST DOOR AT THE TOP.
I'M SURE
THE KIDS WILL BE DELIGHTED
TO SEE YOU.
The camp leader nods.
She replies, MM-HM.
[Both squeal]
The hummingbirds hide behind the drapes. The camp leader walks up the stairs.
[Grunting]
Thelma hides under the rug
She says,
OH, NO.
Odo hides behind the easel.
He says,
IT'S COMING UP THE STAIRS!
[All gasp]
Lightning strikes. The camp leader enters Odo’s bedroom. The door squeaks.
The camp leader says,
IT'S DARK IN HERE.
WHERE'S THE LIGHT?
She gets her leg tangled in banner string.
She says, WHAT?
Odo’s mom and dad sit in the study.
[Leader squeals, wails]
Odo’s mom and dad jump up out of their chairs.
Odo’s dad says, HUH?
Odo’s mom replies,
I BETTER GO UP
AND CHECK ON THEM.
Odo leaps out from behind the easel.
He says,
LOOK! THE DODO OF THE NIGHT!
WE CAUGHT IT!
Odo’s mom enters Odo’s bedroom. She turns on the light. The camp leader hangs upside down from the banner string.
Odo’s mom says,
OH, MY! CAMP LEADER!
Odo says,
CAMP LEADER?
The camp leader replies,
HELLO, ODO. IF YOU'D JUST BE
SO KIND AS TO LET ME DOWN?
[Grunts]
Odo unties the banner string. The camp leader falls on the floor.
[Grunts]
Odo says,
OOPS.
SORRY, CAMP LEADER. WE THOUGHT
YOU WERE THE DODO OF THE NIGHT.
The camp leader gets up and rubs her back.
She replies,
NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE.
I RATHER THINK
THAT'S FIXED MY BACK.
OH, YES! THAT'S BETTER.
MUCH BETTER!
SEE YOU TOMORROW, EVERYONE!
AND THANKS AGAIN.
WHOOPEE!
The camp leader leaves Odo’s bedroom.
Thelma says,
I CAN'T BELIEVE
WE THOUGHT CAMP LEADER
WAS THE DODO OF THE NIGHT!
Odo replies,
YEAH. BUT IF IT HAD BEEN
THE DODO OF THE NIGHT,
US OWLS WOULD HAVE
JUST SAVED THE WHOLE FOREST!
TWIT, TWOO!
The campers say, TWIT, TWOO!
In the morning, the sun shines brightly on the forest camp. The camp leader holds up a megaphone. The campers gather around her.
The camp leader says,
GOOD MORNING, CAMPERS!
AND WHAT A DELIGHTFUL MORNING
IT IS!
NOW, WHO'S UP
FOR A WONDERFUL DAY
FILLED WITH TREMENDOUS
ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES,
THAT MAY OR MAY NOT INCLUDE
CARRYING BOXES INTO MY HUT?
ODO, USUALLY YOU'RE FIRST
IN LINE TO VOLUNTEER. OH, MY!
The campers sleep near peach boxes.
The camp leader says,
SOME OF US HAVE BEEN UP
ALL NIGHT.
JUST LIKE OWLS,
TO SLEEP THROUGH THE DAY.
Odo rolls over.
