Mandisa sits at a table with two children. One child has brown hair in two braids, the other child has short black hair. Mandisa holds up two crafted owls.
Mandisa asks, WHO KNOWS WHAT BIRDS THESE ARE?
The black-haired child says, OWLS!
The brown-haired child says, OWLS!
Mandisa asks, WHAT SOUND IS AN OWL MAKE?
Both children say, HOO! HOO!
Mandisa says, SUCH A GREAT HOOTING. DO YOU GUYS WANT TO MAKE AN OWL OF YOUR OWN?
Both say, YEAH.
Mandisa says, OK. WE NEED SOME SUPPLIES. LET'S GO.
Mandisa and the children stand up. They move around the room, gathering supplies.
(Music playing)
Mandisa narrates, YOU'LL NEED A CARDBOARD TUBE, COLOURFUL YARN, FEATHERS, BUTTONS, CONSTRUCTION PAPER AND GLUE.
Mandisa and the children are back sitting at the table, with the craft supplies in front of them.
Mandisa says, SO WE NEED A NICE, STRONG BODY FOR OUR OWLS MADE OUT OF A CARDBOARD TUBE LIKE THAT ONE. SO YOU CAN TAKE THAT CARDBOARD TUBE. TO MAKE OUR OWL EARS, WE NEED TO FOLD IN THE TOP. SO YOU'RE GOING TO SQUEEZE RIGHT THERE. GOOD. SQUEEZE RIGHT THERE, AND I'M GOING TO FOLD THIS SIDE IN. AND CAN YOU FOLD IN THAT OTHER SIDE? WONDERFUL, ABBY.
Abby folds the top of a small cardboard tube.
Mandisa asks, WHAT COULD WE USE TO GIVE OUR OWLS SOME COLOUR?
The black-haired child says, WE COULD USE THESE!
The child picks up a bowl of yarn.
Mandisa says, THAT'S RIGHT. THIS IS CALLED YARN AND WE'RE GOING TO WRAP THIS YARN AROUND TO GIVE IT SOME COLOUR. SO THERE'S A LITTLE SLIT RIGHT HERE. I'M GOING TO PUT THAT THROUGH HERE TO HELP IT STAY. AND THEN YOU CAN WRAP IT AROUND.
The children wrap yarn around the tubes.
Abby says, WRAP IT ALL AROUND.
Mandisa says, THAT'S RIGHT. GIVE OUR OWLS SOME COLOUR.
(Music playing)
The tubes are covered in different coloured pieces of yarn.
Mandisa says, THAT'S THE END, AND THEN WE CAN TUCK THE END IN RIGHT THERE. GOOD JOB. OK.
Abby says, AND NOW IT'S AN OWL.
The black-haired child says, WE NEED EYEBALLS.
Mandisa says, SO THAT'S RIGHT. LET'S USE THESE BIG CIRCLES TO GLUE ON OUR BUTTONS, SO LET'S CHOOSE TWO BUTTONS FOR YOUR OWL EYES FIRST.
Mandisa holds out a bowl of buttons. The black-haired child puts glue on two white circles of paper.
Abby says, I WANT TWO, TWO PINK EYES.
Mandisa says, BUTTONS ARE SUCH GREAT CRAFT SUPPLIES.
The black-haired child says, HOW CUTE.
The children glue the white circles onto the tubes.
Mandisa says, GOOD, AND NUMBER TWO.
Abby says, OK. AND NOW I WANT, I WANT A BIG BUTTON.
Abby glues buttons onto the white circles.
Mandisa says, YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE NEXT STEP IS, SEBASTIAN! ARE YOU GIVING YOUR BIRD SOME FEATHERS?
Sebastian says, YES.
Sebastian adds feathers onto the tube.
Mandisa says, FOR WINGS, WE TUCK THE FEATHERS IN UNDER THE YARN, JUST LIKE THAT.
Sebastian says, I WANT A DIFFERENT COLOUR.
Abby says, THERE.
Mandisa says, YOU DID IT!
Sebastian says, MINE LOOKS CUTE.
Mandisa says, IT DOES, BUT IT'S MISSING ONE THING.
Sebastian asks, WHAT?
Mandisa asks, WHAT IS HE MISSING?
An animated crayon points at Mandisa’s owl’s beak.
(Laughs)
Sebastian says, THE MOUTH!
Abby says, BEAK.
Mandisa says, THAT'S RIGHT, OK. WE'LL JUST USE A LITTLE BIT OF GLUE, SO IT DOESN'T FALL DOWN JUST A TINY DROP. THAT'S GOOD.
Abby adds glue to yellow paper.
Mandisa says, THAT'S GOOD. AND GREAT, CAN YOU GUYS HOLD UP YOUR OWLS?
The children hold up their finished crafts.
Mandisa says, WOW! I LOVE THE COLOURS OF YOUR OWLS! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF MAKING THE OWL, ABBY?
Abby says, ALL OF IT!
Mandisa says, ALL OF IT! LET'S ALL SING LIKE OWLS. HOO!
All say, HOO! HOO!
