Snow covers the ground in a forest. Small round footprints are pressed into the snow. A small brown squirrel scurries up a tree. He pops into a nest then comes out and runs down the tree. A slightly bigger brown squirrel peeks its head out of the nest and follows the other squirrel. The squirrels sit on the roots of the tree and gaze at the footprints.
The small squirrel says, WHOSE ARE THESE FOOTPRINTS?
The larger squirrel says, THE GRUFFALO.
(The small squirrel gasps)
The small squirrel says, MAMA!
A third squirrel peeks out of the nest.
The small squirrel says, THE GRUFFALO'S BEEN HERE!
The mother squirrel scampers down the tree and examines the footprints.
The mother squirrel says, HMM.
NO.
TOO SMALL.
The other two squirrels say, HUH?
The small squirrel says, WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?
The mother squirrel says, "WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?"
HMM?
WELL...
I'LL TELL YOU WHAT IT COULD BE.
Snow falls around the tree.
(Light piano and triangle music plays)
A small creature with brown fur, yellow eyes and offset square teeth, peeks out from behind the tree holding a small tree branch shaped like a stick figure. The creature has a playful curious expression. The creature puts down the branch and peeks under the tree roots.
A title reads, The Gruffalo’s Child.
The creature, the Gruffalo’s child reaches under the tree roots and pulls out a small sleeping hedgehog. The hedgehog awakens. The Gruffalo’s child smiles at the hedgehog.
(The Gruffalo’s child giggles)
(The hedgehog squeaks)
The hedgehog rolls into a ball and leaps out of The Gruffalo’s child’s hands.
The Gruffalo’s child says, OW!
(The hedgehog whimpers)
The hedgehog trudges slowly through the snow. The Gruffalo’s child giggles and follows the hedgehog, who leaves a trail through the snow. The Gruffalo’s child follows the hedgehog into a dense area of the forest. Birds fly through the forest.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child says, WHOA!
The Gruffalo, who also has brown fur but is bigger and has sharp tusks and white pointy horns on his head, carries his child out of the forest.
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
(The Gruffalo grunts)
The squirrel kids say, HUH?
The squirrel mother says, THE GRUFFALO SAID THAT...
The Gruffalo says, NO GRUFFALO SHOULD EVER SET
FOOT IN THE DEEP, DARK WOOD.
The Gruffalo’s child says, WHY NOT?
The Gruffalo says, WHY NOT?
OH!
BECAUSE, IF YOU DO, THE BIG BAD
MOUSE WILL BE AFTER YOU.
The Gruffalo’s child pouts and crosses her arms.
The Gruffalo says, I MET HIM ONCE.
A narrator, who is the mother squirrel, SAID THE
GRUFFALO.
The Gruffalo says, I MET HIM A LONG, LONG TIME
AGO.
The Gruffalo walks away from his child, then sits down in a cave.
(The Gruffalo groans as he sits)
The Gruffalo’s child enters the cave, carrying the stick figure branches.
The Gruffalo’s child says, WHAT DOES HE LOOK LIKE?
TELL US, DAD.
IS HE TERRIBLY BIG AND TERRIBLY
BAD?
The Gruffalo says, UM... I CAN'T QUITE REMEMBER.
The narrator says,
THE GRUFFALO SAID.
The Gruffalo’s child scampers up to the Gruffalo and hugs his leg, then sits on his lap.
The narrator says, THEN HE THOUGHT FOR A
MINUTE...
AND SCRATCHED HIS HEAD.
The Gruffalo’s child looks eagerly at her dad.
The Gruffalo says, THE BIG BAD MOUSE...
...IS TERRIBLY STRONG.
A fist punches through the wall of the cave.
The Gruffalo’s child says, TERRIBLY STRONG?
The Gruffalo says, AND HIS SCALY TAIL IS
TERRIBLY LONG.
A long scaly tail wraps around the Gruffalo’s leg.
The Gruffalo’s child says, TERRIBLY LONG?
The Gruffalo’s child snuggles into her dad.
The Gruffalo says, HIS EYES ARE LIKE POOLS OF
TERRIBLE FIRE.
Large bright orange eyes glow in the darkness of the cave.
The Gruffalo’s child says, TERRIBLE FIRE.
The Gruffalo says, AND HIS TERRIBLE WHISKERS ARE
TOUGHER THAN WIRE.
Light gleams off sharp whiskers underneath the orange eyes. The Gruffalo’s child looks frightened.
One of the squirrel kids says, TOUGHER THAN WIRE?
The Gruffalo’s child draws a picture of a mouse with sharp teeth on the cave wall.
The Gruffalo’s child says, THE BIG BAD MOUSE...
...IS TERRIBLY STRONG.
AND HIS SCALY TAIL IS TERRIBLY

HIS EYES ARE LIKE POOLS OF
TERRIBLE FIRE.

The Gruffalo’s child speaks to toy animals made from pieces of wood.
(The Gruffalo chuckles)
The Gruffalo’s child stares at her drawing.
The Gruffalo’s child says, THE BIG BAD MOUSE.
(The Gruffalo snores)
The Gruffalo’s child lies awake, tucked under her dad’s arm. The Gruffalo’s child rustles and squirms.
The narrator says,
ONE SNOWY NIGHT WHEN
THE GRUFFALO SNORED...
The Gruffalo’s child squirts out from under her dad’s arm.
The narrator says,
...THE GRUFFALO'S CHILD WAS
FEELING BORED.
The Gruffalo’s child stares at her drawing. Snow falls gently outside the cave.
(A raven caws)
The Gruffalo’s child gazes at the snow. Snow covers the trees in the forest.
(Soft harp music plays)
The Gruffalo’s child peeks at her dad, then grabs her stick figure branches from her dad’s hand. The Gruffalo’s child leaves the cave.
The narrator says, THE GRUFFALO'S CHILD WAS
FEELING BRAVE.
SO SHE TIPTOED OUT OF THE
GRUFFALO CAVE.
(The raven caws)
The Gruffalo’s child looks up and says, OH.
(The raven caws on the branch of a barren tree)
Snow falls around the Gruffalo’s child. She looks back toward the cave then toward the forest. She smiles and walks toward the forest.
The narrator says, THE SNOW FELL FAST AND
THE WIND BLEW WILD.
(The Gruffalo’s child giggles)
The narrator says, INTO THE WOOD WENT THE
GRUFFALO'S CHILD.
(The raven caws)
The Gruffalo’s child falls down a hill.
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
The Gruffalo’s child says, OH!
The Gruffalo’s child gazes at a dark area of the forest. She stands up and walks cautiously through the forest.
(Creaking and howling)
The Gruffalo’s child gazes up at the moon above the treetops.
(A branch snaps)
A small bird flies past The Gruffalo’s child.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps, then chuckles)
(Soft acoustic guitar music plays)
The Gruffalo’s child slides down a muddy hill. She hops over a frozen stream, then peeks through the branches of a fallen tree.
(The hedgehog squeaks)
The hedgehog scurries through the snow in the opposite direction of The Gruffalo’s child. The Gruffalo’s child stands atop another fallen tree.
The Gruffalo’s child says, AHA!
OH-HO!
A TRAIL IN THE SNOW.
WHOSE IS THIS TRAIL?
AND WHERE DOES IT GO?
The Gruffalo’s child walks alongside the hedgehog’s trail.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child notices a scaly tail under a pile of snow-covered logs and rocks.
The narrator says,
A TAIL POKED OUT OF
A LOG-PILE HOUSE.
The Gruffalo’s child cautiously approaches the tail.
The Gruffalo’s child says, COULD THIS BE THE TAIL...
...OF THE BIG BAD MOUSE?
The Gruffalo’s child gently touches the tail. It zips forward under the log-pile house.
(The Gruffalo’s child squeals)
The Gruffalo’s child peeks through an opening under the log pile house. A yellow snake slithers out of the log-pile house behind The Gruffalo’s child.
The narrator says,
OUT SLID THE CREATURE.
The Gruffalo’s child says, HMMM!
The snake sneaks up behind The Gruffalo’s child and opens its mouth wide. The Gruffalo’s child falls backward and accidentally jams the stick figure into the snake’s mouth.
(The Gruffalo’s child squeals)
The Gruffalo’s child wriggles out from under the snake.
The Gruffalo’s child says, OH.
(The snake gags)
The stick figure is lodged in the snake’s mouth. The Gruffalo’s child grabs the stick figure, still lodged in the snake’s mouth.
The Gruffalo’s child says, HIS EYES ARE SMALL.
AND HE DOESN'T HAVE WHISKERS.
NO, NONE AT ALL!
(The Gruffalo’s child giggles)
The Gruffalo’s child says, YOU'RE NOT THE MOUSE!
(The snake gags and grunts)
The Gruffalo’s child tugs and pulls at her stick figure, then pulls it out and falls backward into the snow.
The snake says, NOT I.
The narrator says, SAID THE SNAKE.
The snake looks mischievously at The Gruffalo’s child.
The snake says, BUT HE'S DOWN BY THE LAKE.
The snake grins sinisterly.
The Gruffalo’s child says, AH!
The Gruffalo’s child jogs through the forest toward a frozen lake in the distance.
The snake says, ...EATING GRUFFALO CAKE.
The Gruffalo’s child walks through an area of skinny frozen tree branches hanging low to the ground. She steps onto the frozen lake, slips, and falls onto her rear-end.
(The Gruffalo’s child laughs)
The Gruffalo’s child sits up and says, OH!
The Gruffalo’s child runs across the frozen lake, sliding across the ice.
(The Gruffalo’s child chuckles and giggles)
The Gruffalo’s child says, WOOOO!
The Gruffalo’s child falls onto her stomach. She looks through the ice and notices a green frog frozen in the ice.
The Gruffalo’s child says, URGH!
Water begins to flow around the Gruffalo’s child.
(Water trickling)
The ice begins to melt around the Gruffalo’s child
(Ice cracking)
The snake sits on the edge of the frozen lake, grinning sinisterly. The Gruffalo’s child looks scared. The ice breaks. The Gruffalo’s child falls into the lake.
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
The Gruffalo’s child pulls herself onto a floating piece of ice. She walks across chunks of broken ice and makes it onto a rock on the far edge of the lake. She dives into a snowbank on the shore.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
(The snake grumbles)
The snake slithers away quickly through the snow.
The mother squirrel stands by their tree with her arms around her two children.
(An owl hoots)
The squirrels scamper under the roots of their tree.
The mother squirrel says, THE SNOW FELL FAST AND
THE WIND BLEW WILD.
A small pile of snow falls on The Gruffalo’s child.
(Tree branches rustle)
The Gruffalo’s child says, I'M NOT SCARED.
A pile of snow falls on the Gruffalo’s child’s face.
The narrator says,
SAID THE GRUFFALO'S
CHILD.
The Gruffalo’s child shakes the snow off her face and notices two white squirrels scampering across snowy tree branches.
(The squirrels squeak)
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child peeks over a tree root at the squirrels. The squirrels notice her and scurry away.
(The squirrels squeak)
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child notices bird tracks in the snow.
The Gruffalo’s child says, AHA.
OH-HO!
MARKS IN THE SNOW.
WHOSE ARE THESE CLAW MARKS?
WHERE DO THEY GO?
The Gruffalo’s child hops across rocks as she follows the tracks. The squirrels follow behind. A bird swoops down and grabs one of the squirrels. The other squirrel scampers away into the forest.
(A bird flaps its wings)

Small yellow eyes glow inside a hollowed-out section of a tree.
The Gruffalo’s child says, OH.
The Gruffalo’s child plants her stick figure in a snowbank near the tree, then climbs the tree.
(The Gruffalo’s child grunts as she climbs)
The stick figure falls over.
The Gruffalo’s child says, SHH!
TWO EYES GLEAMED OUT OF A
TREETOP HOUSE.
COULD THESE BE THE EYES OF
THE BIG BAD MOUSE?
The Gruffalo’s child peers upward, then climbs to the hollow part of the tree. An owl flies out of the hollow. The Gruffalo’s child falls off a branch.
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
(The owl screams)
The Gruffalo’s child clings to one of the owls’s legs. The owl holds onto the branch with its wings. They both fall off the branch.
(The Gruffalo’s child and the owl scream)
The owl tries to fly with The Gruffalo’s child holding onto its leg, but they tumble down into the snow.
The narrator says, DOWN FLEW THE CREATURE.
The Gruffalo’s child pulls herself out of a snowbank.
(The Gruffalo’s child coughs and spits out snow)
The owl flies out of the snowbank, shaking snow from its wings.
The Gruffalo’s child says, HIS TAIL IS SHORT...
AND HE DOESN'T HAVE WHISKERS
OF ANY SORT.
The owl flies into a tree and falls into the snow.
The owl says, OW!
OOF!
The Gruffalo’s child says, YOU'RE NOT THE MOUSE.
The owl shakes snow off itself and says, TOO-WIT, TOO-WOO!
NOT I.
The owl stares at the Gruffalo’s child.
(The owl smacks his lips)
The owl says, BUT HE'S SOMEWHERE NEARBY...
EATING...
GRUFFALO PIE!
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The owl struggles to fly.
The owl says, OH...
OH!
AAH!
A strong wind blows the owl through the forest.
(Wind gusts)
The snow falls heavily. The Gruffalo’s child trudges through the forest.
The narrator says, THE SNOW FELL FAST AND
THE WIND BLEW WILD.
(Wind gusts)
The Gruffalo’s child struggles to walk in the snow.
(The Gruffalo’s child whimpers)
The Gruffalo’s child takes shelter under the roots of a fallen tree. She shivers as she holds her stick figure.
The Gruffalo’s child says, I'M NOT SCARED.
The narrator says,
SAID THE GRUFFALO'S CHILD.
A blizzard blows around the fallen tree. The Gruffalo’s child shivers. The squirrel family sit together under tree roots.
One of the squirrel kids says, AND THEN?
The other squirrel says, HMMM.
Snow falls gently around the fallen tree The Gruffalo’s child shelters under. She awakens and rubs her eyes.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child notices small animal tracks in the snow.
The Gruffalo’s child says, AHA!
OH-HO.
A TRACK IN THE SNOW.
WHOSE IS THIS TRACK?
AND WHERE DOES IT GO?
The Gruffalo’s child crawls and walks through the snow, following the tracks.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child notices a nose and whiskers peeking out from inside a burrow under a tree. She ducks behind a thick tree root.
The Gruffalo’s child says, WHISKERS AT LAST, AND AN
UNDERGROUND HOUSE.
COULD THIS BE THE HOME OF
THE BIG BAD MOUSE?
The Gruffalo’s child looks frightened, then has a look of determination. She hops over the tree root and cautiously approaches the burrow.
(Snoring)
The Gruffalo’s child clutches her stick figure. She slips on ice and slides into the burrow.
The Gruffalo’s child screams, WAAH!
The Gruffalo’s child peeks up from behind a tree root in the burrow.
(Approaching footsteps)
The narrator says, OUT SLUNK
THE CREATURE.
The Gruffalo’s child peeks between tree roots. Furry legs walk outside the tree.
(Growling)
The whiskered nose and a round white eye peek between the tree roots.
The Gruffalo’s child says, HIS EYES AREN'T FIERY.
A bushy tail passes by the entrance to the burrow.
The Gruffalo’s child says, HIS TAIL ISN'T SCALY.
The whiskered nose pokes through snow next to The Gruffalo’s child.
(Sniffing)
The Gruffalo’s child grabs the nose and says, HIS WHISKERS AREN'T WIRY.
A red fox stands outside the burrow.
The fox says, OH!
AH...
ACHOO!
The fox sneezes and falls on its rear end.
The Gruffalo’s child says, YOU'RE NOT THE MOUSE!
The fox says, AAAH!
The fox backs up quickly into a rock. Snow falls from a tree onto the fox.
The fox shakes off the snow and timidly says, GRUFFALO!
The Gruffalo’s child says, YOU'RE NOT THE MOUSE.
The fox says, MOUSE?
OH!
OH, NO, NOT ME.
HE...
HE'S, ER...
HE'S UNDER A TREE!
ER, DRINKING...
...GRUFFALO TEA.
HA-HA.
HA... AH!
The fox hurries into his burrow.
(The Gruffalo’s child sighs)
The Gruffalo’s child walks sadly past an area of tree stumps, carrying her stick figure.
The Gruffalo’s child says, IT'S ALL A TRICK.
The narrator says, SAID THE GRUFFALO'S
CHILD AS SHE SAT ON A STUMP
WHERE THE SNOW LAY PILED.
The Gruffalo’s child says, I DON'T BELIEVE IN THE BIG
BAD MOUSE.
(Sad piano music plays)
The Gruffalo’s child sits on the tree stump looking sad.
(The Gruffalo’s child sniffles and cries)
A small yellow and white mouse steps out of a snowy burrow.
(The mouse yawns, sighs, and laughs)
The mouse looks at a snowman outside its burrow.
(Cheerful whistling)
The Gruffalo’s child sits up and looks toward the snowman and the mouse’s burrow. She looks at the snowman. The mouse steps out of its burrow sweeping the snow with a tiny branch.
The mouse says, OOH.
The mouse notices the Gruffalo’s child.
(The mouse gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child says, BUT HERE COMES A LITTLE ONE
OUT OF HIS HOUSE.
MMM, NOT BIG... NOT BAD...
BUT A MOUSE AT LEAST.
(The mouse laughs)
The Gruffalo’s child says, YOU'LL TASTE GOOD AS A MIDNIGHT
FEAST.
(The mouse gulps)
(Ominous music plays)
(The mouse whistles)
The mouse sweeps toward its burrow. The Gruffalo’s child stands in front of the entrance to the mouse’s burrow and licks her lips.
(The mouse squeaks)
The mouse walks and sweeps quickly away from its burrow. The Gruffalo’s child drops down in front of the mouse.
The Gruffalo’s child says, AAH!
The mouse hurries toward its burrow. The Gruffalo’s child grabs it by its tail. She takes the mouse’s branch broom.
The mouse strains and says, WAIT... WAIT!
The narrator says,
SAID THE MOUSE.
The Gruffalo’s child puts the mouse in her mouth.
The mouse says, BEFORE YOU EAT...
The Gruffalo’s child takes the mouse out of her mouth by his tail
(The mouse gasps)
The mouse says, THERE'S... A... FRIEND OF
MINE...
...THAT YOU OUGHT TO MEET.
The Gruffalo’s child holds the mouse in her paw.
The Gruffalo’s child says, MMM?
The mouse says, IF YOU LET ME HOP ONTO A...
The mouse pops his arm out of the Gruffalo’s child’s grasp.
The mouse continues, ...HAZEL TWIG, I'LL BECKON
MY FRIEND, SO BAD...
AND BIG.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The narrator says, THE GRUFFALO'S CHILD
UNCLENCHED HER FIST.
The Gruffalo’s child says, THE BIG BAD MOUSE?
SO HE DOES EXIST?
The mouse nods and says, MMM-HMM.
The Gruffalo’s child carries the mouse to a hazel tree and places him on a branch. The Gruffalo’s child smiles.
The narrator says, THE MOUSE HOPPED INTO
THE HAZEL TREE.
HE BECKONED, THEN SAID...
The mouse says, JUST WAIT AND SEE.
The Gruffalo’s child looks around excitedly. She picks up her stick figure.
The narrator says, OUT CAME THE MOON.
IT WAS BRIGHT AND ROUND.
A full moon appears from behind clouds.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps and squeals)
The narrator says, A TERRIBLE SHADOW FELL
ONTO THE GROUND.
A large shadow of a mouse falls over the Gruffalo’s child.
(The mouse roars)
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
The shadow disappears. The mouse sits on a hazel tree branch holding a nut.
The mouse says, WHO IS THIS CREATURE SO BIG,
BAD AND STRONG?
The mouse’s shadow falls on a snowy hill. The Gruffalo’s child covers her mouth.
(The mouse roars)
The mouse says, HIS TAIL AND HIS WHISKERS ARE
TERRIBLY LONG!
(The mouse grunts)
The Gruffalo’s child covers her eyes.
The mouse says, HIS EARS ARE ENORMOUS AND OVER
HIS SHOULDER...
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
The mouse says, ...HE CARRIES A NUT AS BIG
AS A BOULDER!
The Gruffalo’s child stares fearfully at the mouse’s giant shadow.
(The mouse roars)

The narrator says,

The mouse stands on the tree branch. The moon glows brightly behind him.

The squirrel kids say, THE MOUSE!

THE MOUSE JUMPED DOWN FROM
THE TWIG AND SMILED.
The Gruffalo’s child runs through the forest with a look of terror.
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
The fox peeks his head out of his burrow. Snow falls on his head.
The fox says, UGH!
The mouse laughs and says, AHA!
OH-HO.
PRINTS IN THE SNOW.
WHOSE ARE THESE FOOTPRINTS?
WHERE DO THEY GO?
The mouse walks beside the Gruffalo’s child’s footprints.
The Gruffalo’s child screams, THE BIG BAD MOUSE!
The owl is startled and falls off a tree branch.
(The mouse hums happily)
The mouse walks past the fox, who is covered with snow. The Gruffalo’s child runs past the snake’s cave.
(The snake hisses)
The Gruffalo’s child runs past the snake’s cave again and steps on the snake.
The snake says, UGH.
(The snake hisses angrily)
The mouse walks past the owl, whose head is stuck in the snow.
The mouse snickers and says, OWL.
HA.
(The Gruffalo’s child pants)
(Dramatic orchestral music plays)
The Gruffalo’s child runs out of the forest, then stumbles and falls in the snow. She notices her cave in the distance and smiles.
(The Gruffalo’s child giggles)
The Gruffalo’s child approaches her cave.
(Birds sing a happy tune)
The Gruffalo’s child’s wooden animal toys sit on the floor of her cave. She smiles.
(The Gruffalo snores)
The Gruffalo sleeps on the cave floor.
(The Gruffalo’s child yawns)
The Gruffalo’s child rubs her eye, then sits down sleepily against her dad.

The Gruffalos sleep. The mouse sits on a rock in the entryway to the Gruffalo cave.
(The Gruffalos snore)
(The mouse sighs)
The squirrel family sit together.
(The mother squirrel playfully snores)
(The squirrel kids laugh)
One of the squirrel kids runs out into the snow, then spins around slowly.
The other young squirrel says, HUH?
The squirrel in the snow makes a Gruffalo paw print n the snow.
The other squirrel says, OH.
(The first young squirrel roars)
(The other squirrel laughs)
The squirrel kids chase each other up their tree. The mother squirrel follows them up the tree.
(Giggling and laughing)

Snow covers the ground in a forest. Small round footprints are pressed into the snow. A small brown squirrel scurries up a tree. He pops into a nest then comes out and runs down the tree. A slightly bigger brown squirrel peeks its head out of the nest and follows the other squirrel. The squirrels sit on the roots of the tree and gaze at the footprints.
The small squirrel says, WHOSE ARE THESE FOOTPRINTS?
The larger squirrel says, THE GRUFFALO.
(The small squirrel gasps)
The small squirrel says, MAMA!
A third squirrel peeks out of the nest.
The small squirrel says, THE GRUFFALO'S BEEN HERE!
The mother squirrel scampers down the tree and examines the footprints.
The mother squirrel says, HMM.
NO.
TOO SMALL.
The other two squirrels say, HUH?
The small squirrel says, WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?
The mother squirrel says, "WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?"
HMM?

I'LL TELL YOU WHAT IT COULD BE.
Snow falls around the tree.
(Light piano and triangle music plays)
A small creature with brown fur, yellow eyes and offset square teeth, peeks out from behind the tree holding a small tree branch shaped like a stick figure. The creature has a playful curious expression. The creature puts down the branch and peeks under the tree roots.
A title reads, The Gruffalo’s Child.
The creature, the Gruffalo’s child reaches under the tree roots and pulls out a small sleeping hedgehog. The hedgehog awakens. The Gruffalo’s child smiles at the hedgehog.
(The Gruffalo’s child giggles)
(The hedgehog squeaks)
The hedgehog rolls into a ball and leaps out of The Gruffalo’s child’s hands.
The Gruffalo’s child says, OW!
(The hedgehog whimpers)
The hedgehog trudges slowly through the snow. The Gruffalo’s child giggles and follows the hedgehog, who leaves a trail through the snow. The Gruffalo’s child follows the hedgehog into a dense area of the forest. Birds fly through the forest.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child says, WHOA!
The Gruffalo, who also has brown fur but is bigger and has sharp tusks and white pointy horns on his head, carries his child out of the forest.
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
(The Gruffalo grunts)
The squirrel kids say, HUH?
The squirrel mother says, THE GRUFFALO SAID THAT...
The Gruffalo says, NO GRUFFALO SHOULD EVER SET
FOOT IN THE DEEP, DARK WOOD.
The Gruffalo’s child says, WHY NOT?
The Gruffalo says, WHY NOT?
OH!
BECAUSE, IF YOU DO, THE BIG BAD
MOUSE WILL BE AFTER YOU.
The Gruffalo’s child pouts and crosses her arms.
The Gruffalo says, I MET HIM ONCE.
A narrator, who is the mother squirrel, SAID THE
GRUFFALO.
The Gruffalo says, I MET HIM A LONG, LONG TIME
AGO.
The Gruffalo walks away from his child, then sits down in a cave.
(The Gruffalo groans as he sits)
The Gruffalo’s child enters the cave, carrying the stick figure branches.
The Gruffalo’s child says, WHAT DOES HE LOOK LIKE?

IS HE TERRIBLY BIG AND TERRIBLY

The Gruffalo says, UM... I CAN'T QUITE REMEMBER.
The narrator says,

The Gruffalo’s child scampers up to the Gruffalo and hugs his leg, then sits on his lap.
The narrator says, THEN HE THOUGHT FOR A

AND SCRATCHED HIS HEAD.
The Gruffalo’s child looks eagerly at her dad.
The Gruffalo says, THE BIG BAD MOUSE...
...IS TERRIBLY STRONG.
A fist punches through the wall of the cave.
The Gruffalo’s child says, TERRIBLY STRONG?

A long scaly tail wraps around the Gruffalo’s leg.

Large bright orange eyes glow in the darkness of the cave.

Snow falls around the Gruffalo’s child. She looks back toward the cave then toward the forest. She smiles and walks toward the forest.

The narrator says, INTO THE WOOD WENT THE

(The raven caws)
The Gruffalo’s child falls down a hill.
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)

The Gruffalo’s child gazes at a dark area of the forest. She stands up and walks cautiously through the forest.
(Creaking and howling)
The Gruffalo’s child gazes up at the moon above the treetops.
(A branch snaps)
A small bird flies past The Gruffalo’s child.

The Gruffalo’s child slides down a muddy hill. She hops over a frozen stream, then peeks through the branches of a fallen tree.

The hedgehog scurries through the snow in the opposite direction of The Gruffalo’s child. The Gruffalo’s child stands atop another fallen tree.
The Gruffalo’s child says, AHA!
OH-HO!
A TRAIL IN THE SNOW.
WHOSE IS THIS TRAIL?
AND WHERE DOES IT GO?
The Gruffalo’s child walks alongside the hedgehog’s trail.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child notices a scaly tail under a pile of snow-covered logs and rocks.
The narrator says,
A TAIL POKED OUT OF
A LOG-PILE HOUSE.
The Gruffalo’s child cautiously approaches the tail.
The Gruffalo’s child says, COULD THIS BE THE TAIL...
...OF THE BIG BAD MOUSE?
The Gruffalo’s child gently touches the tail. It zips forward under the log-pile house.
(The Gruffalo’s child squeals)
The Gruffalo’s child peeks through an opening under the log pile house. A yellow snake slithers out of the log-pile house behind The Gruffalo’s child.
The narrator says,
OUT SLID THE CREATURE.
The Gruffalo’s child says, HMMM!
The snake sneaks up behind The Gruffalo’s child and opens its mouth wide. The Gruffalo’s child falls backward and accidentally jams the stick figure into the snake’s mouth.
(The Gruffalo’s child squeals)
The Gruffalo’s child wriggles out from under the snake.
The Gruffalo’s child says, OH.
(The snake gags)
The stick figure is lodged in the snake’s mouth. The Gruffalo’s child grabs the stick figure, still lodged in the snake’s mouth.
The Gruffalo’s child says, HIS EYES ARE SMALL.
AND HE DOESN'T HAVE WHISKERS.
NO, NONE AT ALL!
(The Gruffalo’s child giggles)
The Gruffalo’s child says, YOU'RE NOT THE MOUSE!
(The snake gags and grunts)
The Gruffalo’s child tugs and pulls at her stick figure, then pulls it out and falls backward into the snow.
The snake says, NOT I.
The narrator says, SAID THE SNAKE.
The snake looks mischievously at The Gruffalo’s child.
The snake says, BUT HE'S DOWN BY THE LAKE.
The snake grins sinisterly.
The Gruffalo’s child says, AH!
The Gruffalo’s child jogs through the forest toward a frozen lake in the distance.
The snake says, ...EATING GRUFFALO CAKE.
The Gruffalo’s child walks through an area of skinny frozen tree branches hanging low to the ground. She steps onto the frozen lake, slips, and falls onto her rear-end.
(The Gruffalo’s child laughs)
The Gruffalo’s child sits up and says, OH!
The Gruffalo’s child runs across the frozen lake, sliding across the ice.
(The Gruffalo’s child chuckles and giggles)
The Gruffalo’s child says, WOOOO!
The Gruffalo’s child falls onto her stomach. She looks through the ice and notices a green frog frozen in the ice.
The Gruffalo’s child says, URGH!
Water begins to flow around the Gruffalo’s child.
(Water trickling)
The ice begins to melt around the Gruffalo’s child
(Ice cracking)
The snake sits on the edge of the frozen lake, grinning sinisterly. The Gruffalo’s child looks scared. The ice breaks. The Gruffalo’s child falls into the lake.
(The Gruffalo’s child screams)
The Gruffalo’s child pulls herself onto a floating piece of ice. She walks across chunks of broken ice and makes it onto a rock on the far edge of the lake. She dives into a snowbank on the shore.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps)
(The snake grumbles)
The snake slithers away quickly through the snow.
The mother squirrel stands by their tree with her arms around her two children.
(An owl hoots)
The squirrels scamper under the roots of their tree.
The mother squirrel says, THE SNOW FELL FAST AND
THE WIND BLEW WILD.
A small pile of snow falls on The Gruffalo’s child.
(Tree branches rustle)
The Gruffalo’s child says, I'M NOT SCARED.
A pile of snow falls on the Gruffalo’s child’s face.
The narrator says,

The Gruffalo’s child shakes the snow off her face and notices two white squirrels scampering across snowy tree branches.

The Gruffalo’s child peeks over a tree root at the squirrels. The squirrels notice her and scurry away.

The Gruffalo’s child hops across rocks as she follows the tracks. The squirrels follow behind. A bird swoops down and grabs one of the squirrels. The other squirrel scampers away into the forest.

The Gruffalo’s child says, OH.
The Gruffalo’s child plants her stick figure in a snowbank near the tree, then climbs the tree.

TWO EYES GLEAMED OUT OF A

The Gruffalo’s child peers upward, then climbs to the hollow part of the tree. An owl flies out of the hollow. The Gruffalo’s child falls off a branch.

The Gruffalo’s child clings to one of the owls’s legs. The owl holds onto the branch with its wings. They both fall off the branch.
(The Gruffalo’s child and the owl scream)
The owl tries to fly with The Gruffalo’s child holding onto its leg, but they tumble down into the snow.
The narrator says, DOWN FLEW THE CREATURE.
The Gruffalo’s child pulls herself out of a snowbank.
(The Gruffalo’s child coughs and spits out snow)
The owl flies out of the snowbank, shaking snow from its wings.
The Gruffalo’s child says, HIS TAIL IS SHORT...
AND HE DOESN'T HAVE WHISKERS

The owl flies into a tree and falls into the snow.

The Gruffalo’s child says, WHISKERS AT LAST, AND AN
UNDERGROUND HOUSE.
COULD THIS BE THE HOME OF
THE BIG BAD MOUSE?
The Gruffalo’s child looks frightened, then has a look of determination. She hops over the tree root and cautiously approaches the burrow.
(Snoring)
The Gruffalo’s child clutches her stick figure. She slips on ice and slides into the burrow.
The Gruffalo’s child screams, WAAH!
The Gruffalo’s child peeks up from behind a tree root in the burrow.
(Approaching footsteps)

The Gruffalo’s child peeks between tree roots. Furry legs walk outside the tree.
(Growling)
The whiskered nose and a round white eye peek between the tree roots.

A bushy tail passes by the entrance to the burrow.

The whiskered nose pokes through snow next to The Gruffalo’s child.
(Sniffing)
The Gruffalo’s child grabs the nose and says, HIS WHISKERS AREN'T WIRY.
A red fox stands outside the burrow.
The fox says, OH!

The fox sneezes and falls on its rear end.
The Gruffalo’s child says, YOU'RE NOT THE MOUSE!
The fox says, AAAH!
The fox backs up quickly into a rock. Snow falls from a tree onto the fox.
The fox shakes off the snow and timidly says, GRUFFALO!
The Gruffalo’s child says, YOU'RE NOT THE MOUSE.
The fox says, MOUSE?
OH!
OH, NO, NOT ME.
HE...

A small yellow and white mouse steps out of a snowy burrow.
(The mouse yawns, sighs, and laughs)
The mouse looks at a snowman outside its burrow.
(Cheerful whistling)
The Gruffalo’s child sits up and looks toward the snowman and the mouse’s burrow. She looks at the snowman. The mouse steps out of its burrow sweeping the snow with a tiny branch.
The mouse says, OOH.
The mouse notices the Gruffalo’s child.
(The mouse gasps)
The Gruffalo’s child says, BUT HERE COMES A LITTLE ONE
OUT OF HIS HOUSE.
MMM, NOT BIG... NOT BAD...
BUT A MOUSE AT LEAST.
(The mouse laughs)

FEAST.
(The mouse gulps)

The mouse sweeps toward its burrow. The Gruffalo’s child stands in front of the entrance to the mouse’s burrow and licks her lips.
(The mouse squeaks)
The mouse walks and sweeps quickly away from its burrow. The Gruffalo’s child drops down in front of the mouse.
The Gruffalo’s child says, AAH!
The mouse hurries toward its burrow. The Gruffalo’s child grabs it by its tail. She takes the mouse’s branch broom.
The mouse strains and says, WAIT... WAIT!
The narrator says,
SAID THE MOUSE.
The Gruffalo’s child puts the mouse in her mouth.
The mouse says, BEFORE YOU EAT...
The Gruffalo’s child takes the mouse out of her mouth by his tail
(The mouse gasps)

The Gruffalo’s child holds the mouse in her paw.

The Gruffalo’s child carries the mouse to a hazel tree and places him on a branch. The Gruffalo’s child smiles.
The narrator says, THE MOUSE HOPPED INTO
THE HAZEL TREE.
HE BECKONED, THEN SAID...
The mouse says, JUST WAIT AND SEE.
The Gruffalo’s child looks around excitedly. She picks up her stick figure.
The narrator says, OUT CAME THE MOON.
IT WAS BRIGHT AND ROUND.
A full moon appears from behind clouds.
(The Gruffalo’s child gasps and squeals)
The narrator says, A TERRIBLE SHADOW FELL
ONTO THE GROUND.
A large shadow of a mouse falls over the Gruffalo’s child.
(The mouse roars)

The shadow disappears. The mouse sits on a hazel tree branch holding a nut.
The mouse says, WHO IS THIS CREATURE SO BIG,

The mouse’s shadow falls on a snowy hill. The Gruffalo’s child covers her mouth.

The mouse walks past the owl, whose head is stuck in the snow.
The mouse snickers and says, OWL.

The Gruffalo’s child runs out of the forest, then stumbles and falls in the snow. She notices her cave in the distance and smiles.

The other young squirrel says, HUH?
The squirrel in the snow makes a Gruffalo paw print n the snow.
The other squirrel says, OH.
(The first young squirrel roars)
(The other squirrel laughs)
The squirrel kids chase each other up their tree. The mother squirrel follows them up the tree.
(Giggling and laughing)
