A narrator says, THE GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER OF US ALL.
It is nighttime. The Moon looks down at a forest and a pond. A crocodile yawns next to the water.
(Yawning)
Flowers on lily pads close. An ostrich sits down on an egg and tucks its head under its wing.
(Sighing)
A snail pulls back into its shell. A baby koala is on a branch next to a larger, sleeping koala.
(Yawning)
Malabar stretches while sitting on a hammock stretched between two trees. He has blonde hair and wears blue shorts and a white t-shirt with a picture of the Sun on it.
The Moon says, GOODNIGHT, EVERYONE,
Malabar asks, AREN'T YOU GOING TO SLEEP, MOON?
The Moon says, NO, I PREFER TO CONTEMPLATE EARTH AND ALL OF ITS INHABITANTS.
Malabar asks, AREN'T THERE INHABITANTS ON YOU?
The Moon says, NOT ONE. BUT ON EARTH, THERE'S THE GREAT FAMILY OF LIVING BEINGS.
Malabar asks, A FAMILY? BUT WE'RE ALL VERY DIFFERENT. DO YOU THINK WE LOOK ALIKE, LITTLE KOALA?
Malabar climbs up to the koalas. He points to the smaller koala.
Malabar says, OH, IN FACT, YES. WE BOTH HAVE A NOSE, WE BOTH HAVE EYES, AND EARS, TWO HANDS, FIVE FINGERS, TWO ARMS, TWO LEGS, AND WE HAVE HAIR!
(Laughing)
Malabar says, WE LOOK A LOT ALIKE YOU AND ME.
(Koala grunts)
The Moon says, OH, HOW ABOUT WE PLAY THE FAMILY GAME?
Malabar says, YEAH!
The Moon says, OKAY, LISTEN WELL. IN THE GREAT FAMILY OF LIVING BEINGS, YOU HAVE TO FIND ME A BEING WITH EYES, A MOUTH AND PAWS, BUT WITHOUT ANY HAIR.
Malabar says, MM. OH! I KNOW. COME ON, KOALA.
Malabar grabs the koala and hops away. He lands on a rock in the pond and points at the crocodile.
Malabar says, WOO-HOO! FOUND IT! CROCODILES DON'T HAVE ANY HAIR.
(Crocodile yawning)
Malabar says, AND OSTRICHES DON'T EITHER. THEY HAVE FEATHERS.
(Ostrich squawks)
The Moon says, WAY TO GO. A HARDER ONE, NOW. IN THE FAMILY OF LIVING BEINGS, GO AND FIND ME ONE WITHOUT ANY PAWS.
Malabar says, WITHOUT PAWS? OH, YEAH!
Malabar bends down to wear the snail is perched on grass.
Malabar says, FOUND IT! SNAILS HAVE NO PAWS!
The Moon says, WELL DONE. YOU'RE GOOD AT THIS GAME. NOW GO AND FIND ME ONE WITH NO EYES, AND NO MOUTH.
The koala sniffs mushrooms growing on the ground.
Malabar says, WELL DONE, KOALA! MUSHROOMS ARE LIVING BEINGS WITH NO EYES AND NO MOUTH.
The Moon says, YES. JUST LIKE THE FLOWERS AND THE TREES. THEY ARE BORN, EAT FOOD, GROW UP, AND MAKE LITTLE BABIES. LIKE ALL MEMBERS OF THE GREAT FAMILY OF LIVING BEINGS.
Tiny voices call, WHAT ABOUT US? DON'T FORGET ABOUT US!
Malabar bends down to look at green dots in the pond.
Malabar asks, YOU TOO BELONG TO OUR GREAT FAMILY?
The tiny voices say, OF COURSE WE DO! WE'RE BACTERIA, AND WE'RE LIVING BEINGS, EVEN IF WE ARE MADE OF ONLY ONE TINY CELL.
Malabar asks, ONLY ONE CELL?
Bacteria say, THAT'S RIGHT. IN THE GREAT FAMILY OF LIVING BEINGS, WE ALL HAVE CELLS.
Malabar asks, WOW! BUT WHY DO WE ALL HAVE CELLS?
The Moon says, THAT COMES FROM THE GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER OF YOU ALL, THE ANCESTOR OF ALL LIVING THINGS.
Malabar asks, HEAR THAT, KOALA? WE HAVE THE SAME ANCESTORS.
The Koala brushes bacteria from its fur.
(Koala grumbling)
Malabar says, IT'D BE REALLY NICE TO MEET HER.
The Moon says, LET'S GO SEE!
The Moon spins. Malabar and Koala stand on a small brown planet with two volcanos.
Malabar asks, BUT WHERE ARE WE?
The Moon says, YOU'RE ON EARTH, BUT A LONG TIME AGO. LONG BEFORE THE ANIMALS AND THE PLANTS EVEN EXISTED. NOW, BACK TO OUR GAME. IN THE FAMILY OF LIVING BEINGS, FIND THE GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER OF EVERYONE.
Malabar calls, YOO-HOO! GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER, WHERE ARE YOU?! YOO-HOO! LOOKS LIKE THERE'S NO ONE AROUND. LET'S GO LOOK IN THE OCEAN.
Malabar and Koala jump into water.
Malabar says, WOW! CELLS. BUT WHICH ONE IS OUR GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER?
A blue cell says, IT'S ME. MY NAME'S LUCA, AND YOU ARE MY GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.
Malabar says, HELLO, GRANNY LUCA. MY NAME'S LITTLE MALABAR, AND THIS IS KOALA.
Luca says, LOOK HOW DARLING YOU BOTH ARE. IT TOOK A VERY LONG TIME BEFORE WE COULD FORM PRETTY LITTLE LIVING BEING LIKE YOU. BUT FORTUNATELY I HAD JUST THE RIGHT RECIPE.
Malabar asks, A RECIPE?
Luca says, MHM. OH, YES. IT'S CALLED—
Luca splits in two.
Both say, MULTIPLICATION.
(Malabar laughing)
Malabar says, AGAIN! DO IT AGAIN!
Luca divides again and again.
(Laughing)
Malabar and Koala swim to the surface and look up at the Moon in the night sky.
The Moon says, GOOD JOB. YOU FOUND LUCA, AND NOW YOU'RE BACK TO THE PRESENT.
(Yawning)
Malabar says, IT'S TIME FOR LITTLE KOALA TO GO TO BED WITH ALL OF GRANNY LUCA'S BIG FAMILY.
Malabar and Koala hop in the hammock. Other animals join them.
Malabar says, GOOD NIGHT, EVERYONE.
(Yawns)
The narrator says, ALL LIVING BEINGS ON EARTH BELONG TO A GREAT BIG FAMILY, DESCENDING FROM A SINGLE CELL THAT LIVED LONG AGO KNOW AS LUCA.
