Transcript: Hiding in Plain Sight / Owl Girl
Elinor, the white rabbit, smiles as she walks through a forest. Orange flowers grow along a path. Elinor wears a red and purple dress. Her black hair is parted to one side and falls to her shoulders.
Elinor approaches a monarch butterfly on a boulder. It flies away from her.
Elinor slides down a large red slide while an iguana crawls up a wooden post.
She plays on the swings with Olive an elephant wearing a blue t-shirt and a matching bow on her head. Ari, the bat, is perched on top of the swing. He wears a green t-shirt and yellow shorts. Ms. Mole sits on a nearby rock and reads a book. She has curly red hair and wears a purple sweater with glasses.
Elinor sings,
WHEREVER I GO
I SEE THINGS THAT I WANT TO
KNOW
WHEREVER I AM
I FIND THINGS I WANT TO
UNDERSTAND
GO AND EXPLORE
LISTEN AND SEE
JUST FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY
Everyone sings,
ELINOR WONDERS WHY
Elinor, Ari, and Olive leap onto a rock as they cross a calm river. A blue bird flies by and lands on a branch. Elinor climbs the tree.
Elinor sings,
WHY DO BIRDS SING?
AND HOW DO THEY FLY?
Everyone sings,
ELINOR WONDERS WHY
Elinor watches ants march along a dirt path with her magnifying glass. Olive takes notes.
Elinor sings,
WHY DO ANTS MARCH?
AND WHERE DO THEY HIDE?
THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
WHEREVER YOU TURN
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
AND FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY
Elinor rushes to her mother, Ranger Rabbit, at night. Olive and Ari follow her. Fireflies surround them.
Everyone sings,
ELINOR WONDERS WHY
Elinor looks at fallen red and yellow leaves.
She sings,
ASK A QUESTION
WHAT WILL YOU FIND?
Elinor slides across a frozen river.
Everyone sings,
ELINOR WONDERS WHY

JUST LISTEN AND SEE
COME AND WONDER WITH ME

The bird flies onto the school roof as Ms. Mole opens the front door. Children run outside.
(All giggling)
Elinor, Olive, and Ari walk outside.
Olive asks,
WHAT SHOULD WE PLAY TODAY AT
RECESS?
Ari says,
I KNOW!
LET'S PLAY TAG.
I'M REALLY GOOD AT PLAYING TAG.
(Giggling)
Olive says,
THAT'S BECAUSE NOBODY CAN
EVER CATCH YOU, ARI.
YOU ALWAYS FLY OFF.
Ari replies,
I CAN'T HELP IT IF I HAVE
WINGS.
(Both giggling)
Elinor says,
I KNOW, LET'S PLAY HIDE AND
SEEK.
THAT WAY WE CAN ALL PLAY
TOGETHER.
Mary and Lizzie, identical twin white goats, walk over to Elinor. Mary wears a green dress. Lizzie wears a blue one.
Mary and Lizzie say,
WE'LL BE IT.
YOU HIDE AND WE'LL SEEK.
Elinor replies, OKAY.
(All laughing)
Elinor, Ari, Olive, a beaver wearing a purple shirt, a quokka wearing a yellow shirt, and a mouse wearing a green shirt run away from Mary and Lizzie
Mary says, ONE.
Lizzie says, TWO.
Ms. Mole reads a book on a rock as the students run around the schoolyard.
Mary says, THREE.
Lizzie says, FOUR.
Elinor says,
WE NEED TO FIND SOMEWHERE TO
HIDE!
Olive replies,
HURRY!
MARY AND LIZZIE ARE ALMOST DONE
COUNTING.
Air says,
LESS TALKING, MORE HIDING.
COME ON!
(Giggling)
Elinor and Olive follow Ari as he runs across the schoolyard. Ari hides in a bush.
(Giggling)
Elinor bumps into Tito, the mouse, who is hiding behind a tree.
She says,
OOPS, SORRY!
I DIDN'T SEE YOU THERE.
(Giggling)
Elinor looks around the schoolyard. She sees a sandbox.
She says, HM.
(Gasping)
Elinor leaps behind the sandbox. She lands on Sally, the beaver.
(Grunting)
Elinor says,
OOPS.
OH, HI, SALLY.
I GUESS THIS SPOT IS TAKEN, TOO!
Sally nods.
Lizzie counts, SIX.
Elinor turns to the slide.
She says, AHA!
Mary counts, SEVEN.
Elinor hides under the slide.
She says,
THERE'S NO WAY MARY AND
LIZZIE WILL FIND ME HERE!
Mary counts, NINE.
Lizzie says, TEN!
Mary and Lizzie say,
READY OR NOT, HERE WE
COME!
(Both giggling)
Mary and Lizzie run across the schoolyard. They find Ari in the bush. Mary taps him on the back.
(Shushing)
Ari says,
I'M TRYING TO HIDE FROM--
Mary and Lizzie say, FOUND YOU!
Ari looks upset.
He replies, AW.
Olive covers her trunk as she hides under the swing set. Mary and Lizzie run to her.
Lizzie says,
NICE TRY, OLIVE, WE FOUND YOU!
Olive replies,
AW.
AT LEAST MY TRUNK WAS HIDDEN.
Mary and Lizzie run to the slide.
They say, FOUND YOU, ELINOR!
Elinor replies,
ALREADY?
THAT WAS FAST.
Olive and Ari run to Elinor, Mary, and Lizzie. Olive sits on the slide.
She asks,
HOW DID YOU FIND US ALL SO
QUICKLY?
Ari says,
ESPECIALLY ME!
I THOUGHT MY HIDING SPOT WAS
PRETTY GOOD.
UH, WASN'T IT?
(Both giggling)
Mary answers,
WELL, WE GOATS HAVE REALLY
GOOD EYESIGHT.
Lizzie adds,
THAT MEANS WE SEE REALLY
WELL.
Mary says,
AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE SO GOOD.
Lizzie says,
AT HIDE AND SEEK!
TITO, COME OUT FROM BEHIND THAT
TREE!
Tito peaks his head out from behind a tree root.
Mary says,
AND KOA!
I SEE YOU BEHIND MS. MOLE!
Koa, the quokka, stands up behind the rock. He waves.
(Gasping)
Ms. Mole drops her book.
Mary and Lizzie walk away from Elinor, Olive, and Ari.
Elinor says, WHOA!
Ari says,
MARY AND LIZZIE ARE WAY TOO
GOOD AT HIDE-AND-SEEK.
WE DON'T STAND A CHANCE!
Mary shouts,
FOUND YOU TOO, SALLY!
Sally sits up behind the sandbox. She runs across the schoolyard with Mary and Lizzie.
Elinor looks deep in thought.
She says,
HM, WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW
TO MAKE OURSELVES HARDER TO
FIND!
Olive replies,
WELL, WE'D BETTER FIGURE IT
OUT QUICKLY.
MARY AND LIZZIE HAVE FOUND
EVERYONE BUT...
Mary and Lizzie shout,
FOUND YOU, CAMILLA!
Camilla, a camel, walks out from behind the school. She wears a pink dress.
She replies, AW.
Ari says,
NOW THEY'VE FOUND EVERYONE!
THAT MUST BE A NEW HIDE-AND-SEEK
RECORD!
Lizzie and Mary walk over to Elinor, Olive, and Ari.
Lizzie says, ALL DONE.
Elinor says,
YOU TWO ARE SO GOOD AT THIS
GAME!
Mary and Lizzie reply, THANK YOU!
Ari leaps into the air.
He says, LET'S PLAY AGAIN!
Mary says,
SURE!
WE'RE HAPPY TO KEEP COUNTING.
Lizzie adds,
IF YOU WANT TO KEEP HIDING!
Mary and Lizzie ask, READY?
They cover their eyes.
Mary counts, ONE.
Lizzie counts, TWO.
The students run away from Mary and Lizzie.
Olive points across the schoolyard.
She says,
LET'S GO HIDE OVER THERE.
Mary counts, THREE.
Lizzie counts, FOUR.
Mary counts, FIVE.
Ari and Elinor hurry across a fallen log on a small creek.
(Gasping)
Olive hides behind a tall brown tree.
Lizzie counts, SIX.
Mary counts, SEVEN.
Lizzie counts, EIGHT.
(Gasping)
Elinor hides behind a large grey rock. A small green bug walks across a pile of green leaves on top of the rock.
Mary counts, NINE.
Lizzie counts, TEN.
Mary and Lizzie shout,
READY OR NOT HERE WE COME!
Ari leaps into a bush filled with tall white flowers.
(Chirping)
Ari looks around.
He says, HUH?
(Chirping)
Mary says, FOUND YOU, TITO.
She walks with Lizzie across a bridge. They look across the creek.
Lizzie says,
ELINOR, YOU'RE BEHIND THE
GREY ROCK.
(Sighing)
Elinor sands up and rests her head on the rock.
Mary says,
ARI, WE SEE YOU IN THOSE
FLOWERS.
Ari stands up.
He replies,
WHAT?
BUT HOW?
Lizzie says,
AND OLIVE, YOU'RE HIDING NEXT
TO THAT TREE!
Olive shouts, IMPOSSIBLE!
Elinor asks, HOW DID YOU FIND US?
Lizzie answers,
IT WAS EASY TO SEE YOUR WHITE
EARS BEHIND THAT GREY ROCK,
ELINOR.
Mary adds,
YOU TOO, OLIVE.
WE CAN SEE YOU REALLY WELL NEXT
TO THAT BROWN TREE.
Ari flies out of the flower bush.
He asks,
HOW DO YOU KEEP FINDING ME?
MY HIDING SPOTS ARE AMAZING!
AREN'T THEY?
Lizzie says,
AND IT WAS EASY TO SEE YOU
IN THOSE WHITE FLOWERS, ARI.
Ari replies, OOH.
(Both laughing)
Mary and Lizzie walk away from Elinor, Olive, and Ari.
Olive says,
HUH, I THOUGHT OUR HIDING
SPOTS WERE MUCH BETTER THIS
TIME, BUT MARY AND LIZZIE STILL
FOUND US RIGHT AWAY.
(Sighing)
Olive leans on the rock near Elinor.
She adds,
THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WE CAN
DO TO HIDE BETTER.
The green bug moves on the pile of leaves.
Elinor and Ari say, WHOA!
Elinor asks, DID YOU SEE THAT?
Olive replies, WHAT?
Ari says,
I THINK THAT LEAF JUST HOPPED!
Elinor adds,
THOSE ARE THE LEAVES I SAW
MOVE BEFORE!
Elinor, Ari, and Olive get a closer look at the bug.
Elinor says,
WAIT, THAT'S AMAZING!
IT'S NOT A LEAF AT ALL!
WHEN YOU LOOK CLOSER YOU CAN
SEE IT HAS LITTLE ANTENNAE AND
LEGS!
Olive says,
IT'S AN INSECT!
LOOK, ITS BODY IS THE SAME SHAPE
AND COLOUR AS THE LEAF!
Ari replies, COOL!
Elinor says, AWESOME!
Ari adds,
THAT'S UNBE-LEAF-ABLE!
(All laughing)
The bug crawls onto Elinor’s hand.
She says,
WE ALMOST DIDN'T SEE YOU
THERE, LITTLE FRIEND!
HE'S SO CUTE.
Olive picks up a leaf with her trunk.
She says,
I'VE READ ABOUT THIS IN MY
NATURE BOOK.
SOME ANIMALS HIDE BY LOOKING
LIKE THE THINGS AROUND THEM.
IT'S CALLED "CAMOUFLAGE."
Elinor holds the bug up to the leaf.
Ari says,
HM, I WONDER IF ANYTHING ELSE
AROUND HERE IS CAMOUFLAGED?
Elinor replies,
THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND
OUT!
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS!
(Gasping)
Olive approaches a pile of twigs at the base of a tall tree. The twigs move.
Olive says,
HM, FIRST HOPPING LEAVES AND
NOW MOVING TWIGS?
OKAY, THAT TIME I KNOW I SAW
SOMETHING MOVE.
The pile of twigs falls around a brown frog.
(Trumpeting)
Olive looks surprised. Elinor walks to her.
She says, WHOA.
Olive asks, HM, WHAT IS THAT?
Ari answers,
SOMETHING BROWN AND--
WHOA!
JUMPY!
The load leaps out of the pile of twigs.
Elinor, Olive, and Ari kneel down beside the toad.
Olive says,
LOOK, IT'S A TOAD!
IT WAS HIDDEN IN THAT PILE OF
STICKS.
Elinor replies,
COOL!
THOSE SPOTS ON HIS BACK LOOK
JUST LIKE THE STICKS ON THE
GROUND!
Olive adds,
EVEN WHEN I WAS LOOKING RIGHT
AT HIM, I COULDN'T SEE HIM!
Elinor replies,
IT'S THE SAME PATTERN.
Ari adds, THAT IS SO COOL!
Elinor says,
NATURE IS SO GOOD AT HIDING!
(Chirping)
Elinor, Olive, and Ari look up into the tree.
Ari says,
HEY, IT'S THE BIRD I HEARD
EARLIER BUT I COULDN'T SEE IT.
Elinor replies,
MAYBE IT'S ALSO CAMOUFLAGED,
LIKE THE BUG AND THE TOAD.
ARI, CAN YOU FLY UP THERE AND
TAKE A LOOK?
Ari says, ALRIGHT.
(Chirping)
Ari flies up into the tree. A brown bird is perched on a nearby branch.
Ari asks,
WHERE'S THAT SOUND COMING
FROM?
(Chirping)
The bird flies past Ari and lands on another branch.
(Gasping)
(Chirping)
Ari notices the bird.
He says, OH, THERE YOU ARE.
(Chirping)
The bird flaps its wings. It flies to Ari and lands on his head.
Ari asks,
HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING HERE THIS
WHOLE TIME?
Ari flies down to Elinor and Olive with the bird on his head.
Elinor says,
WOW!
LOOK AT YOUR BEAUTIFUL BROWN
AND GREY FEATHERS.
THEY'RE THE SAME COLOUR AS THE
TREE.
Olive adds,
IT'S THE PERFECT MATCH, YOU
COULDN'T SEE HIM AT ALL DOWN
HERE.
Ari says,
I COULDN'T EVEN SEE HIM FROM
UP THERE.
(All giggling)
Elinor says,
NATURE IS SO GOOD AT HIDING.
THE KATYDID WAS HIDDEN BECAUSE
IT HAD THE SAME SHAPE AND COLOUR
AS THE LEAF IT WAS NEXT TO.
Olive adds,
AND I DIDN'T SEE THAT TRICKY
TOAD BECAUSE THE SPOTS AND
COLOURS ON HIS SKIN LOOK JUST
LIKE TWIGS HE WAS SITTING ON.
Ari says,
AND MY LITTLE BUDDY UP HERE
LOOKED JUST LIKE THE TREE,
I DIDN'T SEE HIM AT ALL.
Elinor shouts,
THAT IS SO INTERESTING!
(Mary and Lizzie giggling)
Mary and Lizzie run across the bridge.
(Gasping)
Mary says, WE'VE FOUND EVERYONE!
Lizzie asks,
WANT TO PLAY ANOTHER ROUND?
Elinor answers,
YUP, WE'LL BE RIGHT THERE!
ARI, OLIVE!
I HAVE AN IDEA OF HOW WE CAN
HIDE BETTER FROM MARY AND
LIZZIE!
IF WE HIDE NEAR THINGS WE LOOK
LIKE, WE CAN CAMOUFLAGE TOO!
Ari shouts, AWESOME!
Olive adds, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA!
Elinor, Olive, and Ari leap out from behind a bush and skip along a path.
They sing,
HIDE AND SEEK
LET'S PLAY HIDE AND SEEK
COUNT TO TEN
AND DON'T YOU TAKE A PEEK
NATURE SHOWS ME HOW TO HIDE
USE MY COLOUR, SHAPE, OR
SIZE
Elinor sings,
MY TWO EARS ARE LONG AND
WHITE
HOW CAN I HIDE THEM BOTH FROM
SIGHT?
Ari sings,
MY FUR IS BROWN, MY SHIRT IS
GREEN
WHERE CAN I HIDE AND NOT BE
SEEN?
Olive sings,
MY SKIN IS GREY, WHERE CAN I
HIDE
WHAT MAKES MY COLOUR HARD TO
FIND?
Elinor, Olive, and Ari sing,
A HIDING SPOT THAT LOOKS LIKE
ME WILL MAKE ME REALLY HARD TO
SEE
HIDE AND SEEK
LET'S PLAY HIDE AND SEEK
COUNT TO TEN
AND DON'T YOU TAKE A PEEK
Elinor, Olive, and Ari cover their eyes.
Later, Elinor, Olive, and Ari stand on the bridge.
Elinor says,
THOSE SPOTS ARE PERFECT!
Olive replies,
YEAH, THERE'S NO WAY MARY AND
LIZZIE WILL FIND US THERE.
Ari asks,
DO I HAVE TO SAY THIS EVERY
TIME?
LESS TALKING, MORE HIDING.
COME ON!
Elinor, Olive, and Ari run across the bridge. Mary and Lizzie face the door of the school.
Mary counts, EIGHT.
Lizzie counts, NINE.
Mary says, TEN!
Mary and Lizzie shout,
READY OR NOT, HERE WE COME!
They run across the schoolyard.
Sally sits on Camilla’s back as they hide behind a tree.
Mary and Lizzie say,
FOUND YOU!
Koa hides in a hollow tree stump.
Mary and Lizzie say,
FOUND YOU!
Tito hides behind a bush. Mary and Lizzie pop up behind him.
They say, THERE YOU ARE!
(Giggling)
Mary and Lizzie walk along the riverbank.
Mary says,
I CAN'T SEE ELINOR, ARI, OR
OLIVE ANYWHERE.
WHERE ARE THEY?
Ari hides behind the brown tree. Olive hides behind the grey rock. Mary and Lizzie walk past them.
Lizzie replies,
I DON'T KNOW!
WE'VE USUALLY FOUND THEM BY NOW.
THEY'RE HIDING MUCH BETTER THIS
TIME.
Mary and Lizzie run to the white flower bush and look around.
Mary asks,
DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD SPLIT
UP TO LOOK?
Mary and Lizzie turn to one another.
They say,
NAH, DON'T BE RIDICULOUS.
(Both giggling)
Elinor peeks out from behind the tall white flowers in the bush.
She whispers,
IT'S WORKING!
THEY CAN'T SEE US.
(Shushing)
Ari replies, FLOWERS CAN'T TALK!
Olive says, NEITHER CAN TREES!
Mary and Lizzie walk past Olive.
Lizzie says,
WE'VE LOOKED EVERYWHERE!
AND THEY'RE NOWHERE!
Mary replies,
IF WE CAN'T FIND THEM.
Lizzie adds, THEN NO ONE CAN.
Mary and Lizzie nod to one another.
Mary shouts,
COME OUT, COME OUT, WHEREVER
YOU ARE!
Lizzie says, WE GIVE UP YOU WIN.
Elinor, Olive, and Ari leap out of their hiding places.
Elinor shouts, HERE WE ARE!
(Both gasping)
Elinor adds, RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!
Mary asks,
BUT HOW?
WE LOOKED HERE!
Lizzie points to the tree.
She says, WE LOOKED THERE!
Mary and Lizzie shout,
WE LOOKED EVERYWHERE!
(Giggling)
Elinor replies,
WE USED CAMOUFLAGE TO HIDE
IN PLAIN SIGHT!
Olive adds,
WE FOUND HIDING SPOTS THAT
LOOKED JUST LIKE US!
LOTS OF THINGS IN NATURE USE
CAMOUFLAGE.
THAT'S WHERE I GOT THE IDEA.
SEE!
Elinor and Olive return to their hiding spots.
(Gasping)
Mary and Lizzie look surprised.
Ari says, SO YOU COULDN'T SEE US!
Mary says, THAT--
Lizzie says, IS--
Mary and Lizzie say, AMAZING!
Mary asks,
CAN WE TRY?
WE WANT TO CAMOUFLAGE!
Lizzie adds,
YEAH, WE WANT TO HIDE NOW!
(Giggling)
Elinor replies,
OF COURSE, I'LL COUNT!
She covers her eyes.
Elinor counts,
ONE.
TWO.
THREE.
Ari and Olive run away from Elinor. Lizzie turns to Mary.
Lizzie says, PSST.
Elinor counts, FOUR.
Mary and Lizzie look around.
Lizzie asks,
WHAT AROUND HERE LOOKS THE
MOST LIKE TWIN GOATS?
Elinor counts, SEVEN.
Mary shrugs.
She says, LET'S GO!
Mary and Lizzie run away from Elinor.
Elinor says,
EIGHT.
NINE.
TEN!
READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!
Later, the students sit on a rug in their classroom. Ms. Mole walks past them.
She says,
OKAY, KIDS, WHO LIKES TO PLAY
HIDE AND SEEK?
(All agreeing)
Ms. Mole lifts a book up off of her desk.
She says,
WELL, TODAY WE ARE GOING TO
LEARN ABOUT AN ANIMAL THAT PLAYS
HIDE AND SEEK, WAIT FOR IT,
UNDER THE WATER!
Ms. Mole opens the pop-up book to a picture of an octopus at the bottom of the ocean.
(Kids cheering)
Ms. Mole adds,
AN OCTOPUS IS VERY GOOD AT
HIDING.
The red octopus swims along the ocean floor.
Elinor asks,
WHY DOES THE OCTOPUS HIDE,
MS. MOLE?
A purple shark swims toward the octopus. The octopus hides behind a blue rock and turns blue.
Ms. Mole replies,
OOH, GOOD QUESTION, ELINOR.
SOMETIMES THE OCTOPUS NEEDS TO
HIDE TO STAY SAFE.
THE OCTOPUS CAN CHANGE THE
COLOUR OF ITS SKIN, TO LOOK LIKE
THE THINGS AROUND IT.
The students say, WHOA!
The shark swims past the octopus. The octopus turns red again, then turns multi-colour.
Ms. Mole says,
IT CAN CHANGE INTO LOTS OF
DIFFERENT COLOURS AND PATTERNS.
IT CAN ALSO CHANGE ITS SHAPE.
The octopus changes its shape into a bush.
Tito asks,
WOW, CAN IT LOOK LIKE A ROCK?
Elinor asks,
CAN IT LOOK LIKE SAND?
Olive asks,
CAN IT LOOK LIKE A BANANA?
Elinor turns to Olive.
Elinor says, HUH?
(Giggling)
Olive replies, I JUST LIKE BANANAS!
The octopus takes the shape of a banana.
(Kids laughing)
Ms. Mole adds,
REMEMBER, KIDS, THE BEST WAY
TO HIDE IN NATURE IS TO LOOK
LIKE THE THINGS AROUND YOU.
WE CALL THE CAMOUFLAGE.
IT MAKES YOU HARDER TO SEE.
The shark swims past three camouflaged octopuses.
The book lays on Ms. Mole’s desk.
Olive asks,
WHERE DID MS. MOLE GO?
Ari adds, SHE WAS JUST HERE!
The students look around the classroom. Ms. Mole wears an octopus costume. She is camouflaged in front of the chalkboard.
Ms. Mole shouts, AH-HA, HERE I AM!
Elinor replies, WOW!
Ari says, YAY!
Olive adds, NICE ONE!
(Laughing)
Elinor smiles as she walks down a path in the forest. A monarch butterfly flies past her.
Text reads, “Owl Girl”.
Olive and Ari follow Elinor down the path as she chases the butterfly.
Olive says,
I CAN'T WAIT FOR SCHOOL
TOMORROW.
Ari replies, ME TOO, OLIVE.
(Giggling)
Ari looks confused.
He asks, WAIT, WHY?
(Giggling)
Olive says, IT'S COSTUME DAY, ARI!
Ari says,
YES, COSTUME DAY!
WE GET TO WEAR A COSTUME TO
SCHOOL TOMORROW!
REMEMBER LAST YEAR?
I WAS A BASEBALL AND BAT!
GET IT?
BECAUSE I AM A BAT?
(Laughing)
Olive replies,
I REMEMBER.
IT WAS SO FUNNY.
(Croaking)
Ari says,
THIS YEAR, I'M GOING TO BE
SOMETHING SUPER COOL AND
MYSTERIOUS.
WHOOPS, CAREFUL ELINOR!
Elinor crawls past Ari. She leans over a frog.
Elinor says,
SORRY, ARI.
HM.
MAYBE I'LL DRESS UP AS A FROG.
The frog hops away from Elinor.
Ari asks,
SO, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO
DRESS UP AS, OLIVE?
Elinor looks down at a berry hanging from the branch of a bush.
Olive replies,
I'VE BEEN WORKING ON MY
COSTUME FOR DAYS!
Ari says,
LET ME GUESS, IS IT A BANANA?
Olive asks,
A BANANA?
NO, ALTHOUGH, I DO LOVE BANANAS.
YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND
SEE!
Ari says,
OKAY.
HEY, ELINOR, WHAT ARE YOU GOING
TO BE FOR COSTUME DAY?
Elinor answers,
I WANT IT TO BE SOMETHING
REALLY INTERESTING, BUT I
HAVEN'T FOUND THE RIGHT IDEA
FOR MY COSTUME YET, AND COSTUME
DAY IS TOMORROW!
Olive says,
WE'LL HELP YOU LOOK FOR
IDEAS, ELINOR.
Ari adds,
JUST CALL ME ARI THE IDEA-FINDER!
(Gasping)
Ari looks up at a tree branch. He looks surprised.
Ari asks,
WHAT'S THAT?
WHOA!
A brown owl is perched on a tree branch.
Olive replies, IT'S AN OWL!
Ari says,
I'VE NEVER SEEN AN OWL THIS
CLOSE BEFORE.
Elinor asks, WHAT'S IT DOING?
Olive says, IT'S NOT MOVING.
(Sighing)
Ari says,
I'LL GO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!
Ari flies up to the owl.
He says,
ITS EYES ARE CLOSED!
I THINK IT'S SLEEPING!
Elinor replies,
SLEEPING?
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY?
Olive says,
MAYBE IT'S TAKING A NAP.
Ari flies down to Elinor and Olive.
He says, PHEW, I COULD USE NAP.
(Stomach growling)
Ari adds, AND A SNACK.
(All laughing)
Elinor, Olive, and Ari look up at the sleeping owl.
Elinor says,
LET'S WAIT FOR THE OWL TO
WAKE UP!
I WANT TO SEE IT FLY!
WHOOSH!
Olive adds, OK, LET'S WAIT.
Elinor looks excited as she watches the owl sleep. Olive and Ari sit on a fallen tree stump.
Later, Olive reads a book while Ari blows a leaf into the air. Elinor continues to watch the owl.
(Crunching)
Ari eats a snack.
(Gasping)
(Sighing)
Elinor looks disappointed.
She asks,
IS THE OWL GOING TO SLEEP ALL
DAY?
Olive replies,
IT CAN'T SLEEP ALL DAY.
CAN IT?
Ari says,
SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD TO ME.
SOME OF MY COUSINS SLEEP ALL
DAY.
Olive says, I WONDER WHEN IT EATS.
Ari replies,
SPEAKING OF EATING.
IT'S ALMOST DINNER TIME!
Olive gets up and puts her book in her bag.
She says,
YOU'RE RIGHT.
WE'D BETTER GO.
COME ON, ELINOR.
Olive and Ari walk away from Elinor. Elinor looks up at the owl.
She says, OH, PLEASE, WAKE UP!
(Sighing)
Elinor walks away from the sleeping owl.
(Hooting)
Later, the moon glows brightly over Elinor’s house. Fireflies gather under a tree.
(Snoring)
Elinor sleeps in her bed. She talks in her sleep.
Elinor says,
OWL, WAKE UP, PLEASE WAKE UP.
(Hooting)
(Gasping)
Elinor wakes. She sits up quickly in her bed.
(Hooting)
Elinor walks to her window and opens it. She looks outside.
Elinor asks, WHO'S OUT THERE?
(Hooting)
Elinor replies, WHO WHAT?
(Hooting)
Elinor asks, WHO, ME?
(Hooting)
Elinor shouts,
YES, I HEARD YOU!
DO YOU MEAN ME?
I'M ELINOR, THAT'S WHO.
(Hooting)
Elinor closes her window and walks into her parent's bedroom. Her mom and dad sleep in their bed.
Elinor says,
MOM, WAKE UP!
MOM!
MOM, WAKE UP!
Elinor’s mom, Ranger Rabbit, sits up quickly. She turns on a lamp on the nightstand.
Ranger Rabbit replies,
HUH?
WHAT?
ELINOR?
IS SOMETHING WRONG?
Elinor says, I CAN'T SLEEP.
Ranger Rabbit asks,
HONEY, WHAT'S KEEPING YOU
AWAKE?
Elinor answers,
I CAN'T SLEEP BECAUSE OF A
QUESTION.
Ranger Rabbit says,
RIGHT.
TELL ME, WHAT IS YOUR
MIDDLE-OF-THE-NIGHT QUESTION?
Elinor replies,
IT'S NOT MY QUESTION.
SOMEONE'S OUTSIDE MY WINDOW
ASKING ME QUESTIONS!
THEY KEEP SAYING "WHO" AND WON'T
STOP.
Ranger Rabbit says, I SEE.
Elinor adds,
I WANT TO GO OUTSIDE AND SEE
WHO IT IS.
CAN YOU COME WITH ME?
(Sighing)
Ranger Rabbit replies,
YES, I CAN.
LET'S GET OUR NIGHT-TIME
OBSERVATION KIT!
Elinor looks excited.
She says, YAY!
Elinor runs out of her parent’s bedroom and into the hall.
(Yawning)
Ranger Rabbit gets out of bed and stretches. She slides a basket with two flashlights in it out from under the bed.
Elinor peeks back into Ranger Rabbit’s bedroom.
Elinor says, I'M READY, ARE YOU?
Ranger Rabbit replies,
IT'S THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
OF COURSE I'M READY!
(Hooting)
(Both gasping)
Elinor and Ranger Rabbit look surprised.
Elinor says,
THERE IT IS AGAIN!
COME ON, MOM!
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS!
Ranger Rabbit turns on the porch light as she walks outside with Elinor.
Elinor says,
WOW, IT'S SO DARK!
I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING!
THANKS, MOM!
Ranger Rabbit hands Elinor a flashlight. Elinor turns it on and shines it into the trees.
She asks,
IS THERE ANYTHING AWAKE OUT
HERE?
(Mom yawning)
Ranger Rabbit replies,
OTHER THAN TWO SLEEPY RABBITS?
LET'S HAVE A LOOK!
Ranger Rabbit turns on her flashlight and follows Elinor down a path. They shine their flashlights on fireflies.
(Scurrying)
Bugs and worms crawl across the path. A lizard crawls over a fallen log. Elinor shines her flashlight on it.
She says,
WOW!
THAT WAS SUCH A COOL LIZARD!
I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE LIKE THAT
BEFORE.
Ranger Rabbit replies,
THAT'S BECAUSE YOU USUALLY GO
INTO THE FOREST DURING THE DAY.
SOME ANIMALS ONLY COME OUT AT
NIGHT.
LIKE THIS LIZARD, IT'S CALLED A
GECKO!
(Gasping)
Elinor shines her flashlight on the bugs and worms.
She says,
LOOK AT THIS!
THESE WORMS AND BUGS ARE AWAKE!
THAT IS SO INTERESTING!
I WONDER WHAT ALL THESE ANIMALS
ARE DOING UP SO LATE?
Ranger Rabbit replies,
MAYBE THEIR CHILDREN WOKE
THEM UP TO GO EXPLORING?
(Laughing)
(Humming)
Ranger Rabbit shines her flashlight on Mr. Raccoon. He shields himself from the light. Mr. Raccoon wears a yellow jacket and a red cap.
(Grunting)
Mr. Raccoon says,
OH, HELLO, RANGER RABBIT!
HELLO, ELINOR!
Elinor replies,
HELLO, MR. RACCOON!
ARE YOU OUT LOOKING FOR THE
MYSTERIOUS "WHO" TOO?
Mr. Raccoon asks, MYSTERIOUS WHO?
Elinor says, YES, WHO!
Mr. Raccoon replies,
I MEAN, WHO ARE YOU LOOKING
FOR?
Elinor answers,
WE'RE LOOKING FOR THE WHO,
THAT'S WHO!
Ranger Raccoon adds,
WE ARE OUT EXPLORING, MR.
RACCOON.
Elinor approaches Mr. Raccoon.
She asks,
WHY ARE YOU AWAKE SO LATE?
Mr. Raccoon replies,
OH, I ALWAYS GET UP AROUND
THIS TIME.
I HAVE TO WAKE UP TO WORK AT THE
BAKERY!
Elinor asks,
YOU CAN'T DO THAT DURING THE
DAY?
Mr. Raccoon answers, OH, NO.
(Giggling)
Mr. Raccoon adds,
I HAVE TO START BAKING THE TASTY
TREATS AT NIGHT, SO THEY'LL BE
READY IN TIME FOR BREAKFAST!
Elinor says,
OH, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT.
THEN WHEN DO YOU SLEEP?
Mr. Raccoon replies,
OH, I SLEEP IN THE AFTERNOON
WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS AWAKE.
Elinor says, OH.
Mr. Raccoon says,
WELL, LOVE TO CHAT MORE, BUT
I HAVE TO GET GOING.
TIME TO MAKE THE MUFFINS!
(Humming)
Mr. Raccoon walks away from Elinor and Ranger Rabbit.
Ranger Rabbit says,
GOODBYE, MR. RACCOON.
Elinor says,
BYE!
WOW, MOM.
THERE SURE IS A LOT GOING ON IN
THE FOREST AT NIGHT!
Fireflies fly past Elinor and Ranger Rabbit.
Elinor sings,
I THOUGHT THAT THE FOREST WAS
QUIET AT NIGHT
BUT NOW THAT I HAVE MY TRUSTY
FLASHLIGHT
I SEE WORMS AND BUGS AND
LIZARDS, TOO
BUT I STILL WONDER WHO SAID WHO
(Hooting)
Elinor turns to Ranger Rabbit.
Elinor says, THERE IT IS AGAIN!
She looks up into the trees.
(Gasping)
Elinor says, LOOK!
She shines her flashlight on the owl as it flies over her head.
(Hooting)
The owl lands on a branch.
Elinor says,
WOW!
MOM, THAT'S THE OWL ARI, OLIVE,
AND I SAW ON OUR WAY HOME!
IT'S SO QUIET I ALMOST DIDN'T
NOTICE IT FLY BY!
Ranger Rabbit replies,
THAT'S BECAUSE OWLS ARE AMAZING
BIRDS.
THEY'RE SILENT FLYERS.
THEY HAVE SPECIAL FEATHERS ON
THEIR WINGS THAT DON'T MAKE ANY
SOUND.
Elinor says, OH.
(Hooting)
Elinor says,
WAIT A MINUTE.
THAT'S WHO'S BEEN SAYING "WHO!"
IT'S THE OWL!
HE'S UP LATE, JUST LIKE MR.
RACCOON!
Ranger Rabbit replies,
YEP, OWLS ARE NOCTURNAL.
THAT MEANS THEY STAY AWAKE AT
NIGHT.
(Hooting)
Elinor asks,
BUT WHY?
DOES THE OWL WORK AT A BAKERY,
TOO?
I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THERE WERE
OWL BAKERIES.
Ranger Rabbit laughs.
She says,
I DON'T THINK SO.
OWLS ARE AWAKE AT NIGHT BECAUSE
THEY EAT THINGS LIKE BUGS AND
WORMS THAT COME OUT AT NIGHT.
THEY HAVE SUPER SPECIAL EYES
THAT ARE REALLY GOOD AT SEEING
THINGS IN THE DARK.
Elinor replies,
WOW, I DID NOT KNOW OWLS WERE
SO INTERESTING!
MOM, I JUST HAD A GREAT IDEA!
COME ON!
Ranger Rabbit waves to the owl as she follows Elinor down the path.
Ranger Rabbit says,
OH, GOOD NIGHT OWL.
(Hooting)
(Chirping)
In the morning, birds fly over the school.
(All laughing)
Students walk around the classroom wearing costumes. Olive wears a book costume with a banana on the cover. Ari wears a purple suit with a matching cape and top hat.
Ari says, WOW, NICE COSTUME, OLIVE!
Olive replies,
THANKS, ARI!
YOU KNOW I LOVE BOOKS, AND I
ALWAYS WISHED I HAD ONE THAT
TURNED ITS OWN PAGES, SO CHECK
THIS OUT.
A page in Olive’s book costume shows an elephant stepping on a banana peel.
Ari says,
AWESOME!
WAIT A SECOND, IS THIS A BOOK
ABOUT BANANAS?
(Giggling)
Olive says,
I REALLY DO LOVE BANANAS!
SO, WHAT ARE YOU, ARI?
Ari answers,
THE MYSTERIOUS MYSTERIOSO!
SUPER MAGICIAN, AT YOUR SERVICE!
He bows.
Olive says,
COOL!
ARE YOU GOING TO DO SOME MAGIC?
Ari replies,
YES, I'M GOING TO MAKE MY LUNCH
DISAPPEAR!
LATER.
(Giggling)
Olive says,
VERY IMPRESSIVE, MYSTERIOUS
MYSTERIOSO.
(Elinor hooting)
(Gasping)
Elinor wears an owl costume.
She says, HI ARI, HI OLIVE.
Olive replies,
ELINOR, YOU LOOK JUST LIKE
THE OWL WE SAW YESTERDAY!
Elinor says,
THAT'S RIGHT!
MY MOM AND I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT
MAKING MY COSTUME.
ISN'T IT INTERESTING?
Ari says,
WOW, BUT I THOUGHT OWLS SLEPT
ALL THE TIME?
Elinor replies,
NOPE, OWLS ONLY SLEEP DURING
THE DAY, BUT THEY'RE AWAKE AT
NIGHT!
THAT'S CALLED BEING NOCTURNAL!
Olive says,
NOCTURNAL, I LIKE THAT WORD!
Elinor adds,
THEY HAVE SUPER GOOD EYES FOR
SEEING IN THE DARK.
THAT'S WHEN THEY EAT THEIR FOOD.
Ari replies, OOH.
Elinor says,
AND THEY HAVE SPECIAL FEATHERS
THAT HELP THEM FLY REALLY QUIETLY.
She flaps her wings as she walks around Olive and Ari.
Olive says,
SO, THAT'S WHY THE OWL WE SAW
WOULDN'T OPEN ITS EYES!
IT WAS SLEEPING SO IT COULD BE
AWAKE AT NIGHT!
Elinor replies, THAT'S RIGHT.
Ms. Mole stands in front of the class. She wears a pink flower costume.
Ms. Mole says,
ALRIGHT, CLASS, TIME TO FIND
OUR PLACES!
WELCOME TO COSTUME DAY!
OKAY, NOW WHO WANTS TO TALK
ABOUT THE COSTUME THEY'RE
WEARING?
WAIT, WHERE'S ELINOR?
Ari says, MS. MOLE?
Ms. Mole replies, YES, ARI?
Ari says,
ELINOR'S AN OWL AND SHE WAS
AWAKE ALL NIGHT MAKING HER
COSTUME.
THAT MEANS JUST LIKE AN OWL...
Olive adds,
SHE'LL BE SLEEPING ALL DAY!
Ms. Mole says, OH, ELINOR.
Elinor sleeps on the rug in the classroom.
(Snoring)
Text reads, “Pipeline Studios. Shoe Ink”.
Elinor approaches a monarch butterfly on a boulder. It flies away from her.
Elinor slides down a large red slide while an iguana crawls up a wooden post.
She plays on the swings with Olive an elephant wearing a blue t-shirt and a matching bow on her head. Ari, the bat, is perched on top of the swing. He wears a green t-shirt and yellow shorts. Ms. Mole sits on a nearby rock and reads a book. She has curly red hair and wears a purple sweater with glasses.
Elinor sings,
WHEREVER I GO
I SEE THINGS THAT I WANT TO
KNOW
WHEREVER I AM
I FIND THINGS I WANT TO
UNDERSTAND
GO AND EXPLORE
LISTEN AND SEE
JUST FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY
Everyone sings,
ELINOR WONDERS WHY
Elinor, Ari, and Olive leap onto a rock as they cross a calm river. A blue bird flies by and lands on a branch. Elinor climbs the tree.
Elinor sings,
WHY DO BIRDS SING?
AND HOW DO THEY FLY?
Everyone sings,
ELINOR WONDERS WHY
Elinor watches ants march along a dirt path with her magnifying glass. Olive takes notes.
Elinor sings,
WHY DO ANTS MARCH?
AND WHERE DO THEY HIDE?
THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
WHEREVER YOU TURN
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
AND FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY
Elinor rushes to her mother, Ranger Rabbit, at night. Olive and Ari follow her. Fireflies surround them.
Everyone sings,
ELINOR WONDERS WHY
Elinor looks at fallen red and yellow leaves.
She sings,
ASK A QUESTION
WHAT WILL YOU FIND?
Elinor slides across a frozen river.
Everyone sings,
ELINOR WONDERS WHY
Elinor follows Ari and Olive into a town.
Elinor sings,
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
COME AND WONDER WITH ME
Text reads, “Elinor Wonders Why”.
A brown bird hops along a fallen tree branch outside a school.
Text reads, “Hiding In Plain Sight”.
The bird flies onto the school roof as Ms. Mole opens the front door. Children run outside.
(All giggling)
Elinor, Olive, and Ari walk outside.
Olive asks,
WHAT SHOULD WE PLAY TODAY AT
RECESS?
Ari says,
I KNOW!
LET'S PLAY TAG.
I'M REALLY GOOD AT PLAYING TAG.
(Giggling)
Olive says,
THAT'S BECAUSE NOBODY CAN
EVER CATCH YOU, ARI.
YOU ALWAYS FLY OFF.
Ari replies,
I CAN'T HELP IT IF I HAVE
WINGS.
(Both giggling)
Elinor says,
I KNOW, LET'S PLAY HIDE AND
SEEK.
THAT WAY WE CAN ALL PLAY
TOGETHER.
Mary and Lizzie, identical twin white goats, walk over to Elinor. Mary wears a green dress. Lizzie wears a blue one.
Mary and Lizzie say,
WE'LL BE IT.
YOU HIDE AND WE'LL SEEK.
Elinor replies, OKAY.
(All laughing)
Elinor, Ari, Olive, a beaver wearing a purple shirt, a quokka wearing a yellow shirt, and a mouse wearing a green shirt run away from Mary and Lizzie
Mary says, ONE.
Lizzie says, TWO.
Ms. Mole reads a book on a rock as the students run around the schoolyard.
Mary says, THREE.
Lizzie says, FOUR.
Elinor says,
WE NEED TO FIND SOMEWHERE TO
HIDE!
Olive replies,
HURRY!
MARY AND LIZZIE ARE ALMOST DONE
COUNTING.
Air says,
LESS TALKING, MORE HIDING.
COME ON!
(Giggling)
Elinor and Olive follow Ari as he runs across the schoolyard. Ari hides in a bush.
(Giggling)
Elinor bumps into Tito, the mouse, who is hiding behind a tree.
She says,
OOPS, SORRY!
I DIDN'T SEE YOU THERE.
(Giggling)
Elinor looks around the schoolyard. She sees a sandbox.
She says, HM.
(Gasping)
Elinor leaps behind the sandbox. She lands on Sally, the beaver.
(Grunting)
Elinor says,
OOPS.
OH, HI, SALLY.
I GUESS THIS SPOT IS TAKEN, TOO!
Sally nods.
Lizzie counts, SIX.
Elinor turns to the slide.
She says, AHA!
Mary counts, SEVEN.
Elinor hides under the slide.
She says,
THERE'S NO WAY MARY AND
LIZZIE WILL FIND ME HERE!
Mary counts, NINE.
Lizzie says, TEN!
Mary and Lizzie say,
READY OR NOT, HERE WE
COME!
(Both giggling)
Mary and Lizzie run across the schoolyard. They find Ari in the bush. Mary taps him on the back.
(Shushing)
Ari says,
I'M TRYING TO HIDE FROM--
Mary and Lizzie say, FOUND YOU!
Ari looks upset.
He replies, AW.
Olive covers her trunk as she hides under the swing set. Mary and Lizzie run to her.
Lizzie says,
NICE TRY, OLIVE, WE FOUND YOU!
Olive replies,
AW.
AT LEAST MY TRUNK WAS HIDDEN.
Mary and Lizzie run to the slide.
They say, FOUND YOU, ELINOR!
Elinor replies,
ALREADY?
THAT WAS FAST.
Olive and Ari run to Elinor, Mary, and Lizzie. Olive sits on the slide.
She asks,
HOW DID YOU FIND US ALL SO
QUICKLY?
Ari says,
ESPECIALLY ME!
I THOUGHT MY HIDING SPOT WAS
PRETTY GOOD.
UH, WASN'T IT?
(Both giggling)
Mary answers,
WELL, WE GOATS HAVE REALLY
GOOD EYESIGHT.
Lizzie adds,
THAT MEANS WE SEE REALLY
WELL.
Mary says,
AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE SO GOOD.
Lizzie says,
AT HIDE AND SEEK!
TITO, COME OUT FROM BEHIND THAT
TREE!
Tito peaks his head out from behind a tree root.
Mary says,
AND KOA!
I SEE YOU BEHIND MS. MOLE!
Koa, the quokka, stands up behind the rock. He waves.
(Gasping)
Ms. Mole drops her book.
Mary and Lizzie walk away from Elinor, Olive, and Ari.
Elinor says, WHOA!
Ari says,
MARY AND LIZZIE ARE WAY TOO
GOOD AT HIDE-AND-SEEK.
WE DON'T STAND A CHANCE!
Mary shouts,
FOUND YOU TOO, SALLY!
Sally sits up behind the sandbox. She runs across the schoolyard with Mary and Lizzie.
Elinor looks deep in thought.
She says,
HM, WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW
TO MAKE OURSELVES HARDER TO
FIND!
Olive replies,
WELL, WE'D BETTER FIGURE IT
OUT QUICKLY.
MARY AND LIZZIE HAVE FOUND
EVERYONE BUT...
Mary and Lizzie shout,
FOUND YOU, CAMILLA!
Camilla, a camel, walks out from behind the school. She wears a pink dress.
She replies, AW.
Ari says,
NOW THEY'VE FOUND EVERYONE!
THAT MUST BE A NEW HIDE-AND-SEEK
RECORD!
Lizzie and Mary walk over to Elinor, Olive, and Ari.
Lizzie says, ALL DONE.
Elinor says,
YOU TWO ARE SO GOOD AT THIS
GAME!
Mary and Lizzie reply, THANK YOU!
Ari leaps into the air.
He says, LET'S PLAY AGAIN!
Mary says,
SURE!
WE'RE HAPPY TO KEEP COUNTING.
Lizzie adds,
IF YOU WANT TO KEEP HIDING!
Mary and Lizzie ask, READY?
They cover their eyes.
Mary counts, ONE.
Lizzie counts, TWO.
The students run away from Mary and Lizzie.
Olive points across the schoolyard.
She says,
LET'S GO HIDE OVER THERE.
Mary counts, THREE.
Lizzie counts, FOUR.
Mary counts, FIVE.
Ari and Elinor hurry across a fallen log on a small creek.
(Gasping)
Olive hides behind a tall brown tree.
Lizzie counts, SIX.
Mary counts, SEVEN.
Lizzie counts, EIGHT.
(Gasping)
Elinor hides behind a large grey rock. A small green bug walks across a pile of green leaves on top of the rock.
Mary counts, NINE.
Lizzie counts, TEN.
Mary and Lizzie shout,
READY OR NOT HERE WE COME!
Ari leaps into a bush filled with tall white flowers.
(Chirping)
Ari looks around.
He says, HUH?
(Chirping)
Mary says, FOUND YOU, TITO.
She walks with Lizzie across a bridge. They look across the creek.
Lizzie says,
ELINOR, YOU'RE BEHIND THE
GREY ROCK.
(Sighing)
Elinor sands up and rests her head on the rock.
Mary says,
ARI, WE SEE YOU IN THOSE
FLOWERS.
Ari stands up.
He replies,
WHAT?
BUT HOW?
Lizzie says,
AND OLIVE, YOU'RE HIDING NEXT
TO THAT TREE!
Olive shouts, IMPOSSIBLE!
Elinor asks, HOW DID YOU FIND US?
Lizzie answers,
IT WAS EASY TO SEE YOUR WHITE
EARS BEHIND THAT GREY ROCK,
ELINOR.
Mary adds,
YOU TOO, OLIVE.
WE CAN SEE YOU REALLY WELL NEXT
TO THAT BROWN TREE.
Ari flies out of the flower bush.
He asks,
HOW DO YOU KEEP FINDING ME?
MY HIDING SPOTS ARE AMAZING!
AREN'T THEY?
Lizzie says,
AND IT WAS EASY TO SEE YOU
IN THOSE WHITE FLOWERS, ARI.
Ari replies, OOH.
(Both laughing)
Mary and Lizzie walk away from Elinor, Olive, and Ari.
Olive says,
HUH, I THOUGHT OUR HIDING
SPOTS WERE MUCH BETTER THIS
TIME, BUT MARY AND LIZZIE STILL
FOUND US RIGHT AWAY.
(Sighing)
Olive leans on the rock near Elinor.
She adds,
THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WE CAN
DO TO HIDE BETTER.
The green bug moves on the pile of leaves.
Elinor and Ari say, WHOA!
Elinor asks, DID YOU SEE THAT?
Olive replies, WHAT?
Ari says,
I THINK THAT LEAF JUST HOPPED!
Elinor adds,
THOSE ARE THE LEAVES I SAW
MOVE BEFORE!
Elinor, Ari, and Olive get a closer look at the bug.
Elinor says,
WAIT, THAT'S AMAZING!
IT'S NOT A LEAF AT ALL!
WHEN YOU LOOK CLOSER YOU CAN
SEE IT HAS LITTLE ANTENNAE AND
LEGS!
Olive says,
IT'S AN INSECT!
LOOK, ITS BODY IS THE SAME SHAPE
AND COLOUR AS THE LEAF!
Ari replies, COOL!
Elinor says, AWESOME!
Ari adds,
THAT'S UNBE-LEAF-ABLE!
(All laughing)
The bug crawls onto Elinor’s hand.
She says,
WE ALMOST DIDN'T SEE YOU
THERE, LITTLE FRIEND!
HE'S SO CUTE.
Olive picks up a leaf with her trunk.
She says,
I'VE READ ABOUT THIS IN MY
NATURE BOOK.
SOME ANIMALS HIDE BY LOOKING
LIKE THE THINGS AROUND THEM.
IT'S CALLED "CAMOUFLAGE."
Elinor holds the bug up to the leaf.
Ari says,
HM, I WONDER IF ANYTHING ELSE
AROUND HERE IS CAMOUFLAGED?
Elinor replies,
THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND
OUT!
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS!
(Gasping)
Olive approaches a pile of twigs at the base of a tall tree. The twigs move.
Olive says,
HM, FIRST HOPPING LEAVES AND
NOW MOVING TWIGS?
OKAY, THAT TIME I KNOW I SAW
SOMETHING MOVE.
The pile of twigs falls around a brown frog.
(Trumpeting)
Olive looks surprised. Elinor walks to her.
She says, WHOA.
Olive asks, HM, WHAT IS THAT?
Ari answers,
SOMETHING BROWN AND--
WHOA!
JUMPY!
The load leaps out of the pile of twigs.
Elinor, Olive, and Ari kneel down beside the toad.
Olive says,
LOOK, IT'S A TOAD!
IT WAS HIDDEN IN THAT PILE OF
STICKS.
Elinor replies,
COOL!
THOSE SPOTS ON HIS BACK LOOK
JUST LIKE THE STICKS ON THE
GROUND!
Olive adds,
EVEN WHEN I WAS LOOKING RIGHT
AT HIM, I COULDN'T SEE HIM!
Elinor replies,
IT'S THE SAME PATTERN.
Ari adds, THAT IS SO COOL!
Elinor says,
NATURE IS SO GOOD AT HIDING!
(Chirping)
Elinor, Olive, and Ari look up into the tree.
Ari says,
HEY, IT'S THE BIRD I HEARD
EARLIER BUT I COULDN'T SEE IT.
Elinor replies,
MAYBE IT'S ALSO CAMOUFLAGED,
LIKE THE BUG AND THE TOAD.
ARI, CAN YOU FLY UP THERE AND
TAKE A LOOK?
Ari says, ALRIGHT.
(Chirping)
Ari flies up into the tree. A brown bird is perched on a nearby branch.
Ari asks,
WHERE'S THAT SOUND COMING
FROM?
(Chirping)
The bird flies past Ari and lands on another branch.
(Gasping)
(Chirping)
Ari notices the bird.
He says, OH, THERE YOU ARE.
(Chirping)
The bird flaps its wings. It flies to Ari and lands on his head.
Ari asks,
HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING HERE THIS
WHOLE TIME?
Ari flies down to Elinor and Olive with the bird on his head.
Elinor says,
WOW!
LOOK AT YOUR BEAUTIFUL BROWN
AND GREY FEATHERS.
THEY'RE THE SAME COLOUR AS THE
TREE.
Olive adds,
IT'S THE PERFECT MATCH, YOU
COULDN'T SEE HIM AT ALL DOWN
HERE.
Ari says,
I COULDN'T EVEN SEE HIM FROM
UP THERE.
(All giggling)
Elinor says,
NATURE IS SO GOOD AT HIDING.
THE KATYDID WAS HIDDEN BECAUSE
IT HAD THE SAME SHAPE AND COLOUR
AS THE LEAF IT WAS NEXT TO.
Olive adds,
AND I DIDN'T SEE THAT TRICKY
TOAD BECAUSE THE SPOTS AND
COLOURS ON HIS SKIN LOOK JUST
LIKE TWIGS HE WAS SITTING ON.
Ari says,
AND MY LITTLE BUDDY UP HERE
LOOKED JUST LIKE THE TREE,
I DIDN'T SEE HIM AT ALL.
Elinor shouts,
THAT IS SO INTERESTING!
(Mary and Lizzie giggling)
Mary and Lizzie run across the bridge.
(Gasping)
Mary says, WE'VE FOUND EVERYONE!
Lizzie asks,
WANT TO PLAY ANOTHER ROUND?
Elinor answers,
YUP, WE'LL BE RIGHT THERE!
ARI, OLIVE!
I HAVE AN IDEA OF HOW WE CAN
HIDE BETTER FROM MARY AND
LIZZIE!
IF WE HIDE NEAR THINGS WE LOOK
LIKE, WE CAN CAMOUFLAGE TOO!
Ari shouts, AWESOME!
Olive adds, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA!
Elinor, Olive, and Ari leap out from behind a bush and skip along a path.
They sing,
HIDE AND SEEK
LET'S PLAY HIDE AND SEEK
COUNT TO TEN
AND DON'T YOU TAKE A PEEK
NATURE SHOWS ME HOW TO HIDE
USE MY COLOUR, SHAPE, OR
SIZE
Elinor sings,
MY TWO EARS ARE LONG AND
WHITE
HOW CAN I HIDE THEM BOTH FROM
SIGHT?
Ari sings,
MY FUR IS BROWN, MY SHIRT IS
GREEN
WHERE CAN I HIDE AND NOT BE
SEEN?
Olive sings,
MY SKIN IS GREY, WHERE CAN I
HIDE
WHAT MAKES MY COLOUR HARD TO
FIND?
Elinor, Olive, and Ari sing,
A HIDING SPOT THAT LOOKS LIKE
ME WILL MAKE ME REALLY HARD TO
SEE
HIDE AND SEEK
LET'S PLAY HIDE AND SEEK
COUNT TO TEN
AND DON'T YOU TAKE A PEEK
Elinor, Olive, and Ari cover their eyes.
Later, Elinor, Olive, and Ari stand on the bridge.
Elinor says,
THOSE SPOTS ARE PERFECT!
Olive replies,
YEAH, THERE'S NO WAY MARY AND
LIZZIE WILL FIND US THERE.
Ari asks,
DO I HAVE TO SAY THIS EVERY
TIME?
LESS TALKING, MORE HIDING.
COME ON!
Elinor, Olive, and Ari run across the bridge. Mary and Lizzie face the door of the school.
Mary counts, EIGHT.
Lizzie counts, NINE.
Mary says, TEN!
Mary and Lizzie shout,
READY OR NOT, HERE WE COME!
They run across the schoolyard.
Sally sits on Camilla’s back as they hide behind a tree.
Mary and Lizzie say,
FOUND YOU!
Koa hides in a hollow tree stump.
Mary and Lizzie say,
FOUND YOU!
Tito hides behind a bush. Mary and Lizzie pop up behind him.
They say, THERE YOU ARE!
(Giggling)
Mary and Lizzie walk along the riverbank.
Mary says,
I CAN'T SEE ELINOR, ARI, OR
OLIVE ANYWHERE.
WHERE ARE THEY?
Ari hides behind the brown tree. Olive hides behind the grey rock. Mary and Lizzie walk past them.
Lizzie replies,
I DON'T KNOW!
WE'VE USUALLY FOUND THEM BY NOW.
THEY'RE HIDING MUCH BETTER THIS
TIME.
Mary and Lizzie run to the white flower bush and look around.
Mary asks,
DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD SPLIT
UP TO LOOK?
Mary and Lizzie turn to one another.
They say,
NAH, DON'T BE RIDICULOUS.
(Both giggling)
Elinor peeks out from behind the tall white flowers in the bush.
She whispers,
IT'S WORKING!
THEY CAN'T SEE US.
(Shushing)
Ari replies, FLOWERS CAN'T TALK!
Olive says, NEITHER CAN TREES!
Mary and Lizzie walk past Olive.
Lizzie says,
WE'VE LOOKED EVERYWHERE!
AND THEY'RE NOWHERE!
Mary replies,
IF WE CAN'T FIND THEM.
Lizzie adds, THEN NO ONE CAN.
Mary and Lizzie nod to one another.
Mary shouts,
COME OUT, COME OUT, WHEREVER
YOU ARE!
Lizzie says, WE GIVE UP YOU WIN.
Elinor, Olive, and Ari leap out of their hiding places.
Elinor shouts, HERE WE ARE!
(Both gasping)
Elinor adds, RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!
Mary asks,
BUT HOW?
WE LOOKED HERE!
Lizzie points to the tree.
She says, WE LOOKED THERE!
Mary and Lizzie shout,
WE LOOKED EVERYWHERE!
(Giggling)
Elinor replies,
WE USED CAMOUFLAGE TO HIDE
IN PLAIN SIGHT!
Olive adds,
WE FOUND HIDING SPOTS THAT
LOOKED JUST LIKE US!
LOTS OF THINGS IN NATURE USE
CAMOUFLAGE.
THAT'S WHERE I GOT THE IDEA.
SEE!
Elinor and Olive return to their hiding spots.
(Gasping)
Mary and Lizzie look surprised.
Ari says, SO YOU COULDN'T SEE US!
Mary says, THAT--
Lizzie says, IS--
Mary and Lizzie say, AMAZING!
Mary asks,
CAN WE TRY?
WE WANT TO CAMOUFLAGE!
Lizzie adds,
YEAH, WE WANT TO HIDE NOW!
(Giggling)
Elinor replies,
OF COURSE, I'LL COUNT!
She covers her eyes.
Elinor counts,
ONE.
TWO.
THREE.
Ari and Olive run away from Elinor. Lizzie turns to Mary.
Lizzie says, PSST.
Elinor counts, FOUR.
Mary and Lizzie look around.
Lizzie asks,
WHAT AROUND HERE LOOKS THE
MOST LIKE TWIN GOATS?
Elinor counts, SEVEN.
Mary shrugs.
She says, LET'S GO!
Mary and Lizzie run away from Elinor.
Elinor says,
EIGHT.
NINE.
TEN!
READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!
Later, the students sit on a rug in their classroom. Ms. Mole walks past them.
She says,
OKAY, KIDS, WHO LIKES TO PLAY
HIDE AND SEEK?
(All agreeing)
Ms. Mole lifts a book up off of her desk.
She says,
WELL, TODAY WE ARE GOING TO
LEARN ABOUT AN ANIMAL THAT PLAYS
HIDE AND SEEK, WAIT FOR IT,
UNDER THE WATER!
Ms. Mole opens the pop-up book to a picture of an octopus at the bottom of the ocean.
(Kids cheering)
Ms. Mole adds,
AN OCTOPUS IS VERY GOOD AT
HIDING.
The red octopus swims along the ocean floor.
Elinor asks,
WHY DOES THE OCTOPUS HIDE,
MS. MOLE?
A purple shark swims toward the octopus. The octopus hides behind a blue rock and turns blue.
Ms. Mole replies,
OOH, GOOD QUESTION, ELINOR.
SOMETIMES THE OCTOPUS NEEDS TO
HIDE TO STAY SAFE.
THE OCTOPUS CAN CHANGE THE
COLOUR OF ITS SKIN, TO LOOK LIKE
THE THINGS AROUND IT.
The students say, WHOA!
The shark swims past the octopus. The octopus turns red again, then turns multi-colour.
Ms. Mole says,
IT CAN CHANGE INTO LOTS OF
DIFFERENT COLOURS AND PATTERNS.
IT CAN ALSO CHANGE ITS SHAPE.
The octopus changes its shape into a bush.
Tito asks,
WOW, CAN IT LOOK LIKE A ROCK?
Elinor asks,
CAN IT LOOK LIKE SAND?
Olive asks,
CAN IT LOOK LIKE A BANANA?
Elinor turns to Olive.
Elinor says, HUH?
(Giggling)
Olive replies, I JUST LIKE BANANAS!
The octopus takes the shape of a banana.
(Kids laughing)
Ms. Mole adds,
REMEMBER, KIDS, THE BEST WAY
TO HIDE IN NATURE IS TO LOOK
LIKE THE THINGS AROUND YOU.
WE CALL THE CAMOUFLAGE.
IT MAKES YOU HARDER TO SEE.
The shark swims past three camouflaged octopuses.
The book lays on Ms. Mole’s desk.
Olive asks,
WHERE DID MS. MOLE GO?
Ari adds, SHE WAS JUST HERE!
The students look around the classroom. Ms. Mole wears an octopus costume. She is camouflaged in front of the chalkboard.
Ms. Mole shouts, AH-HA, HERE I AM!
Elinor replies, WOW!
Ari says, YAY!
Olive adds, NICE ONE!
(Laughing)
Elinor smiles as she walks down a path in the forest. A monarch butterfly flies past her.
Text reads, “Owl Girl”.
Olive and Ari follow Elinor down the path as she chases the butterfly.
Olive says,
I CAN'T WAIT FOR SCHOOL
TOMORROW.
Ari replies, ME TOO, OLIVE.
(Giggling)
Ari looks confused.
He asks, WAIT, WHY?
(Giggling)
Olive says, IT'S COSTUME DAY, ARI!
Ari says,
YES, COSTUME DAY!
WE GET TO WEAR A COSTUME TO
SCHOOL TOMORROW!
REMEMBER LAST YEAR?
I WAS A BASEBALL AND BAT!
GET IT?
BECAUSE I AM A BAT?
(Laughing)
Olive replies,
I REMEMBER.
IT WAS SO FUNNY.
(Croaking)
Ari says,
THIS YEAR, I'M GOING TO BE
SOMETHING SUPER COOL AND
MYSTERIOUS.
WHOOPS, CAREFUL ELINOR!
Elinor crawls past Ari. She leans over a frog.
Elinor says,
SORRY, ARI.
HM.
MAYBE I'LL DRESS UP AS A FROG.
The frog hops away from Elinor.
Ari asks,
SO, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO
DRESS UP AS, OLIVE?
Elinor looks down at a berry hanging from the branch of a bush.
Olive replies,
I'VE BEEN WORKING ON MY
COSTUME FOR DAYS!
Ari says,
LET ME GUESS, IS IT A BANANA?
Olive asks,
A BANANA?
NO, ALTHOUGH, I DO LOVE BANANAS.
YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND
SEE!
Ari says,
OKAY.
HEY, ELINOR, WHAT ARE YOU GOING
TO BE FOR COSTUME DAY?
Elinor answers,
I WANT IT TO BE SOMETHING
REALLY INTERESTING, BUT I
HAVEN'T FOUND THE RIGHT IDEA
FOR MY COSTUME YET, AND COSTUME
DAY IS TOMORROW!
Olive says,
WE'LL HELP YOU LOOK FOR
IDEAS, ELINOR.
Ari adds,
JUST CALL ME ARI THE IDEA-FINDER!
(Gasping)
Ari looks up at a tree branch. He looks surprised.
Ari asks,
WHAT'S THAT?
WHOA!
A brown owl is perched on a tree branch.
Olive replies, IT'S AN OWL!
Ari says,
I'VE NEVER SEEN AN OWL THIS
CLOSE BEFORE.
Elinor asks, WHAT'S IT DOING?
Olive says, IT'S NOT MOVING.
(Sighing)
Ari says,
I'LL GO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!
Ari flies up to the owl.
He says,
ITS EYES ARE CLOSED!
I THINK IT'S SLEEPING!
Elinor replies,
SLEEPING?
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY?
Olive says,
MAYBE IT'S TAKING A NAP.
Ari flies down to Elinor and Olive.
He says, PHEW, I COULD USE NAP.
(Stomach growling)
Ari adds, AND A SNACK.
(All laughing)
Elinor, Olive, and Ari look up at the sleeping owl.
Elinor says,
LET'S WAIT FOR THE OWL TO
WAKE UP!
I WANT TO SEE IT FLY!
WHOOSH!
Olive adds, OK, LET'S WAIT.
Elinor looks excited as she watches the owl sleep. Olive and Ari sit on a fallen tree stump.
Later, Olive reads a book while Ari blows a leaf into the air. Elinor continues to watch the owl.
(Crunching)
Ari eats a snack.
(Gasping)
(Sighing)
Elinor looks disappointed.
She asks,
IS THE OWL GOING TO SLEEP ALL
DAY?
Olive replies,
IT CAN'T SLEEP ALL DAY.
CAN IT?
Ari says,
SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD TO ME.
SOME OF MY COUSINS SLEEP ALL
DAY.
Olive says, I WONDER WHEN IT EATS.
Ari replies,
SPEAKING OF EATING.
IT'S ALMOST DINNER TIME!
Olive gets up and puts her book in her bag.
She says,
YOU'RE RIGHT.
WE'D BETTER GO.
COME ON, ELINOR.
Olive and Ari walk away from Elinor. Elinor looks up at the owl.
She says, OH, PLEASE, WAKE UP!
(Sighing)
Elinor walks away from the sleeping owl.
(Hooting)
Later, the moon glows brightly over Elinor’s house. Fireflies gather under a tree.
(Snoring)
Elinor sleeps in her bed. She talks in her sleep.
Elinor says,
OWL, WAKE UP, PLEASE WAKE UP.
(Hooting)
(Gasping)
Elinor wakes. She sits up quickly in her bed.
(Hooting)
Elinor walks to her window and opens it. She looks outside.
Elinor asks, WHO'S OUT THERE?
(Hooting)
Elinor replies, WHO WHAT?
(Hooting)
Elinor asks, WHO, ME?
(Hooting)
Elinor shouts,
YES, I HEARD YOU!
DO YOU MEAN ME?
I'M ELINOR, THAT'S WHO.
(Hooting)
Elinor closes her window and walks into her parent's bedroom. Her mom and dad sleep in their bed.
Elinor says,
MOM, WAKE UP!
MOM!
MOM, WAKE UP!
Elinor’s mom, Ranger Rabbit, sits up quickly. She turns on a lamp on the nightstand.
Ranger Rabbit replies,
HUH?
WHAT?
ELINOR?
IS SOMETHING WRONG?
Elinor says, I CAN'T SLEEP.
Ranger Rabbit asks,
HONEY, WHAT'S KEEPING YOU
AWAKE?
Elinor answers,
I CAN'T SLEEP BECAUSE OF A
QUESTION.
Ranger Rabbit says,
RIGHT.
TELL ME, WHAT IS YOUR
MIDDLE-OF-THE-NIGHT QUESTION?
Elinor replies,
IT'S NOT MY QUESTION.
SOMEONE'S OUTSIDE MY WINDOW
ASKING ME QUESTIONS!
THEY KEEP SAYING "WHO" AND WON'T
STOP.
Ranger Rabbit says, I SEE.
Elinor adds,
I WANT TO GO OUTSIDE AND SEE
WHO IT IS.
CAN YOU COME WITH ME?
(Sighing)
Ranger Rabbit replies,
YES, I CAN.
LET'S GET OUR NIGHT-TIME
OBSERVATION KIT!
Elinor looks excited.
She says, YAY!
Elinor runs out of her parent’s bedroom and into the hall.
(Yawning)
Ranger Rabbit gets out of bed and stretches. She slides a basket with two flashlights in it out from under the bed.
Elinor peeks back into Ranger Rabbit’s bedroom.
Elinor says, I'M READY, ARE YOU?
Ranger Rabbit replies,
IT'S THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
OF COURSE I'M READY!
(Hooting)
(Both gasping)
Elinor and Ranger Rabbit look surprised.
Elinor says,
THERE IT IS AGAIN!
COME ON, MOM!
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS!
Ranger Rabbit turns on the porch light as she walks outside with Elinor.
Elinor says,
WOW, IT'S SO DARK!
I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING!
THANKS, MOM!
Ranger Rabbit hands Elinor a flashlight. Elinor turns it on and shines it into the trees.
She asks,
IS THERE ANYTHING AWAKE OUT
HERE?
(Mom yawning)
Ranger Rabbit replies,
OTHER THAN TWO SLEEPY RABBITS?
LET'S HAVE A LOOK!
Ranger Rabbit turns on her flashlight and follows Elinor down a path. They shine their flashlights on fireflies.
(Scurrying)
Bugs and worms crawl across the path. A lizard crawls over a fallen log. Elinor shines her flashlight on it.
She says,
WOW!
THAT WAS SUCH A COOL LIZARD!
I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE LIKE THAT
BEFORE.
Ranger Rabbit replies,
THAT'S BECAUSE YOU USUALLY GO
INTO THE FOREST DURING THE DAY.
SOME ANIMALS ONLY COME OUT AT
NIGHT.
LIKE THIS LIZARD, IT'S CALLED A
GECKO!
(Gasping)
Elinor shines her flashlight on the bugs and worms.
She says,
LOOK AT THIS!
THESE WORMS AND BUGS ARE AWAKE!
THAT IS SO INTERESTING!
I WONDER WHAT ALL THESE ANIMALS
ARE DOING UP SO LATE?
Ranger Rabbit replies,
MAYBE THEIR CHILDREN WOKE
THEM UP TO GO EXPLORING?
(Laughing)
(Humming)
Ranger Rabbit shines her flashlight on Mr. Raccoon. He shields himself from the light. Mr. Raccoon wears a yellow jacket and a red cap.
(Grunting)
Mr. Raccoon says,
OH, HELLO, RANGER RABBIT!
HELLO, ELINOR!
Elinor replies,
HELLO, MR. RACCOON!
ARE YOU OUT LOOKING FOR THE
MYSTERIOUS "WHO" TOO?
Mr. Raccoon asks, MYSTERIOUS WHO?
Elinor says, YES, WHO!
Mr. Raccoon replies,
I MEAN, WHO ARE YOU LOOKING
FOR?
Elinor answers,
WE'RE LOOKING FOR THE WHO,
THAT'S WHO!
Ranger Raccoon adds,
WE ARE OUT EXPLORING, MR.
RACCOON.
Elinor approaches Mr. Raccoon.
She asks,
WHY ARE YOU AWAKE SO LATE?
Mr. Raccoon replies,
OH, I ALWAYS GET UP AROUND
THIS TIME.
I HAVE TO WAKE UP TO WORK AT THE
BAKERY!
Elinor asks,
YOU CAN'T DO THAT DURING THE
DAY?
Mr. Raccoon answers, OH, NO.
(Giggling)
Mr. Raccoon adds,
I HAVE TO START BAKING THE TASTY
TREATS AT NIGHT, SO THEY'LL BE
READY IN TIME FOR BREAKFAST!
Elinor says,
OH, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT.
THEN WHEN DO YOU SLEEP?
Mr. Raccoon replies,
OH, I SLEEP IN THE AFTERNOON
WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS AWAKE.
Elinor says, OH.
Mr. Raccoon says,
WELL, LOVE TO CHAT MORE, BUT
I HAVE TO GET GOING.
TIME TO MAKE THE MUFFINS!
(Humming)
Mr. Raccoon walks away from Elinor and Ranger Rabbit.
Ranger Rabbit says,
GOODBYE, MR. RACCOON.
Elinor says,
BYE!
WOW, MOM.
THERE SURE IS A LOT GOING ON IN
THE FOREST AT NIGHT!
Fireflies fly past Elinor and Ranger Rabbit.
Elinor sings,
I THOUGHT THAT THE FOREST WAS
QUIET AT NIGHT
BUT NOW THAT I HAVE MY TRUSTY
FLASHLIGHT
I SEE WORMS AND BUGS AND
LIZARDS, TOO
BUT I STILL WONDER WHO SAID WHO
(Hooting)
Elinor turns to Ranger Rabbit.
Elinor says, THERE IT IS AGAIN!
She looks up into the trees.
(Gasping)
Elinor says, LOOK!
She shines her flashlight on the owl as it flies over her head.
(Hooting)
The owl lands on a branch.
Elinor says,
WOW!
MOM, THAT'S THE OWL ARI, OLIVE,
AND I SAW ON OUR WAY HOME!
IT'S SO QUIET I ALMOST DIDN'T
NOTICE IT FLY BY!
Ranger Rabbit replies,
THAT'S BECAUSE OWLS ARE AMAZING
BIRDS.
THEY'RE SILENT FLYERS.
THEY HAVE SPECIAL FEATHERS ON
THEIR WINGS THAT DON'T MAKE ANY
SOUND.
Elinor says, OH.
(Hooting)
Elinor says,
WAIT A MINUTE.
THAT'S WHO'S BEEN SAYING "WHO!"
IT'S THE OWL!
HE'S UP LATE, JUST LIKE MR.
RACCOON!
Ranger Rabbit replies,
YEP, OWLS ARE NOCTURNAL.
THAT MEANS THEY STAY AWAKE AT
NIGHT.
(Hooting)
Elinor asks,
BUT WHY?
DOES THE OWL WORK AT A BAKERY,
TOO?
I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THERE WERE
OWL BAKERIES.
Ranger Rabbit laughs.
She says,
I DON'T THINK SO.
OWLS ARE AWAKE AT NIGHT BECAUSE
THEY EAT THINGS LIKE BUGS AND
WORMS THAT COME OUT AT NIGHT.
THEY HAVE SUPER SPECIAL EYES
THAT ARE REALLY GOOD AT SEEING
THINGS IN THE DARK.
Elinor replies,
WOW, I DID NOT KNOW OWLS WERE
SO INTERESTING!
MOM, I JUST HAD A GREAT IDEA!
COME ON!
Ranger Rabbit waves to the owl as she follows Elinor down the path.
Ranger Rabbit says,
OH, GOOD NIGHT OWL.
(Hooting)
(Chirping)
In the morning, birds fly over the school.
(All laughing)
Students walk around the classroom wearing costumes. Olive wears a book costume with a banana on the cover. Ari wears a purple suit with a matching cape and top hat.
Ari says, WOW, NICE COSTUME, OLIVE!
Olive replies,
THANKS, ARI!
YOU KNOW I LOVE BOOKS, AND I
ALWAYS WISHED I HAD ONE THAT
TURNED ITS OWN PAGES, SO CHECK
THIS OUT.
A page in Olive’s book costume shows an elephant stepping on a banana peel.
Ari says,
AWESOME!
WAIT A SECOND, IS THIS A BOOK
ABOUT BANANAS?
(Giggling)
Olive says,
I REALLY DO LOVE BANANAS!
SO, WHAT ARE YOU, ARI?
Ari answers,
THE MYSTERIOUS MYSTERIOSO!
SUPER MAGICIAN, AT YOUR SERVICE!
He bows.
Olive says,
COOL!
ARE YOU GOING TO DO SOME MAGIC?
Ari replies,
YES, I'M GOING TO MAKE MY LUNCH
DISAPPEAR!
LATER.
(Giggling)
Olive says,
VERY IMPRESSIVE, MYSTERIOUS
MYSTERIOSO.
(Elinor hooting)
(Gasping)
Elinor wears an owl costume.
She says, HI ARI, HI OLIVE.
Olive replies,
ELINOR, YOU LOOK JUST LIKE
THE OWL WE SAW YESTERDAY!
Elinor says,
THAT'S RIGHT!
MY MOM AND I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT
MAKING MY COSTUME.
ISN'T IT INTERESTING?
Ari says,
WOW, BUT I THOUGHT OWLS SLEPT
ALL THE TIME?
Elinor replies,
NOPE, OWLS ONLY SLEEP DURING
THE DAY, BUT THEY'RE AWAKE AT
NIGHT!
THAT'S CALLED BEING NOCTURNAL!
Olive says,
NOCTURNAL, I LIKE THAT WORD!
Elinor adds,
THEY HAVE SUPER GOOD EYES FOR
SEEING IN THE DARK.
THAT'S WHEN THEY EAT THEIR FOOD.
Ari replies, OOH.
Elinor says,
AND THEY HAVE SPECIAL FEATHERS
THAT HELP THEM FLY REALLY QUIETLY.
She flaps her wings as she walks around Olive and Ari.
Olive says,
SO, THAT'S WHY THE OWL WE SAW
WOULDN'T OPEN ITS EYES!
IT WAS SLEEPING SO IT COULD BE
AWAKE AT NIGHT!
Elinor replies, THAT'S RIGHT.
Ms. Mole stands in front of the class. She wears a pink flower costume.
Ms. Mole says,
ALRIGHT, CLASS, TIME TO FIND
OUR PLACES!
WELCOME TO COSTUME DAY!
OKAY, NOW WHO WANTS TO TALK
ABOUT THE COSTUME THEY'RE
WEARING?
WAIT, WHERE'S ELINOR?
Ari says, MS. MOLE?
Ms. Mole replies, YES, ARI?
Ari says,
ELINOR'S AN OWL AND SHE WAS
AWAKE ALL NIGHT MAKING HER
COSTUME.
THAT MEANS JUST LIKE AN OWL...
Olive adds,
SHE'LL BE SLEEPING ALL DAY!
Ms. Mole says, OH, ELINOR.
Elinor sleeps on the rug in the classroom.
(Snoring)
