Elinor smiles as she watches the other kids play from inside Olive’s bedroom. The snowflake lands on the window.

Olive’s mom says,

Ari turns to Olive.

Olive’s mom helps Olive put on her snowsuit. Elinor and Ari look excited as they watch Olive’s mom put on Olive’s hood and wrap the scarf around her neck.

WAY UP IN THE NORTH, ONLY A FEW
ANIMALS CAN STAY WARM.
THE POLAR BEAR HAS A VERY THICK
COAT OF FUR TO STAY WARM.
A polar bear walks to the edge of an iceberg and stands on its hind legs.
Olive says,
ONE OF MY FRIENDS IS A POLAR BEAR.
WHEN SHE VISITS, SHE DOESN'T
EVEN WEAR A JACKET OUTSIDE.
Ms. Mole adds,
THAT'S RIGHT, POLAR BEARS HAVE

Later, snow falls as Ari, Olive, and Elinor climb up the hill.

Olive loses her balance. Elinor catches her.

Olive makes a path in the snow as she slides down the hill.

Elinor and Ari cheer,

She slides down the hill with Ari. They land in the snow fort.

Later, Ms. Mole opens the classroom door and students hurry inside.

(Kids cheering)
The students sit on a rug in front of Ms. Mole.
Elinor asks,
WHAT'S TODAY'S STORY, MS. MOLE?
Ms. Mole opens a pop-up book. Icebergs float in the water on one of the pages.
Ms. Mole answers,
TODAY'S STORY IS ALL ABOUT STAYING
WARM.
BUT OUR STORY STARTS IN A VERY
COLD PLACE.
WAY UP IN THE NORTH, ONLY A FEW
ANIMALS CAN STAY WARM.
THE POLAR BEAR HAS A VERY THICK
COAT OF FUR TO STAY WARM.
A polar bear walks to the edge of an iceberg and stands on its hind legs.
Olive says,
ONE OF MY FRIENDS IS A POLAR BEAR.
WHEN SHE VISITS, SHE DOESN'T
EVEN WEAR A JACKET OUTSIDE.
Ms. Mole adds,
THAT'S RIGHT, POLAR BEARS HAVE
THICK COATS OF FUR ON THEIR SKIN
THAT LET THEM STAY WARM ON THE
ICE.
OR EVEN WHEN THEY SWIM IN
FREEZING WATERS.
The polar bear dives into the water. It floats on its back as it enjoys a drink with an umbrella in it.
Elinor asks,
MS. MOLE, WHY ARE POLAR BEARS
ALWAYS WHITE?
Ms. Mole replies,
GOOD QUESTION.
POLAR BEARS HAVE WHITE FUR SO
THEY CAN HIDE IN THE SNOW.
Olive adds,
YOU CAN HARDLY SEE HIM!
Ms. Mole says,
BUT THAT'S NOT EVEN THE MOST
AMAZING THING ABOUT POLAR BEARS!
DO YOU KNOW WHAT COLOUR A POLAR
BEAR'S SKIN IS UNDERNEATH ALL
THAT FUR?
Elinor says, I'M PINK UNDER MY FUR.
Ari asks, IS IT WHITE TOO?
Ms. Mole adds,
IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, A POLAR
BEAR'S SKIN IS ACTUALLY BLACK
UNDERNEATH THE FUR!
THE THICK WHITE FUR KEEPS THEM
COZY IN THE SNOW, AND THE BLACK
SKIN UNDERNEATH HELPS THEM SOAK
UP THE WARM LIGHT FROM THE SUN.
IT'S A GOOD THING POLAR BEARS
HAVE SUCH SPECIAL FUR AND SKIN.
YOU WON'T FIND A MOLE LIKE ME
SWIMMING IN FREEZING WATER.
Ms. Mole puts down the book. She wears a thick white jacket and a polar bear hat.
(Kids giggling)
Elinor runs to school on a sunny day. She blows a leaf into the sky.

Elinor hurries into her classroom. Ashley, a koala, stands at the door and waves to her. Ashley has red hair and wears a yellow dress.

The students sit on the rug in front of Ms. Mole.

Ms. Mole lifts a carrot off her desk.
The students shout, NO!
Ari says, THAT'S A CARROT!
(Sniffing)

(Chomping)
Ms. Mole takes a bite of the carrot and lays it back on the desk. She picks up a chalkboard eraser.
Ms. Mole says,
HMM, HERE, OKAY.
NOW THIS MUST BE MY BOOK!
The students reply, NO!
(Giggling)
Ari shouts, THAT'S AN ERASER!
(Sniffing)
Ms. Mole smells the eraser and blows on it. Chalk dust fills the air.
Ms. Mole says, AH... AH...
(Sneezing)
Ms. Mole picks up a book from her desk.
She asks,

(Laughing)
The students shout, YES!

Elinor holds up Ari’s arm.
She adds,

Elinor drags Ari across the classroom.

Elinor pulls on Ashley's bootstrap.
She says,

Ashley grabs Medhi’s backpack.
She adds,

(Velcro tearing)
Elinor pulls on Javier’s yellow jacket.
Olive says,
YOU'RE RIGHT, IT'S ON EVERYTHING!
She pulls off Ari’s watch off his wrist with her trunk. Ari falls to the floor.
He says, OOF!

BEFORE.

Students rush out of the classroom. Elinor, Ari, and Olive look at the watch at the door.

STICK TO THE FUZZY SIDE WITHOUT
BEING STICKY?
Olive replies,

SOUNDS LIKE A MYSTERY.

Ari watches the other students play outside from the classroom window.
He asks,
WHAT ABOUT GOING TO RECESS?
Elinor sticks Ari’s watch to the back of his t-shirt.
She says,
AND LOOK, THE PATCH ALSO
STICKS TO OTHER THINGS!
Elinor pulls the watch off Ari’s t-shirt.
Ari says, HEY!
Elinor tries to stick Ari’s watch to a chair. It slides off.
(Sighing)
Elinor says,

Ari replies,
HUH, THAT IS INTERESTING.
Olive carries a large stack of books into the classroom.
She says,
WELL, I FOUND SOME FUN BOOKS,
BUT NONE ABOUT MYSTERIOUS
SCRATCHY PATCHES THAT STICK TO
THINGS.
Ari adds,
OR DON'T STICK TO THINGS.
THAT'S THE MYSTERY!
Elinor says,
HMM, I HAVE AN IDEA.
LET'S TRY STICKING THE PATCH TO
A LOT OF THINGS, AND SEE WHAT IT

Olive holds up a pencil and a notepad. She makes a chart.
Olive says,

Elinor says,

Ari’s watch sticks to the rug.

(Giggling)
Ari’s watch slides down Olive’s trunk.

Ari looks out the window. The monarch butterfly flies past.
Ari says,

Elinor and Olive hurry outside. Ari flaps his wings.

Ari runs outside.

She says,

Olive shakes her head.

Brown prickly seeds stick to Ari’s shirt.

Elinor hurries to Ari and looks at the seeds.

Elinor pulls the seeds off Ari’s shirt. She looks at one.
(Tearing noises)

Elinor sticks a seed back onto Ari’s shirt and rips it off again.

BUT THE HOOKS NEED SOMETHING
FUZZY WITH LITTLE LOOPS TO GRAB

Olive makes a note on her chart.

Elinor, Olive, and Ari run back to school.

Elinor, Olive, and Ari climb the ladder to the slide. Elinor slides down first.
She says, YAY!
Ari slides down the slide.

Olive slides down the slide.
(Cheering)
Elinor, Olive, and Ari hurry to Ms. Mole who is sitting on a rock.
Elinor says,
MS. MOLE, WE FIGURED IT OUT!
(Panting)
Olive shouts,
IT'S THE LITTLE HOOKS ON THE
PATCH!
Ari adds,
THEY MAKE THE STRAP STICK
TOGETHER!
Elinor says,

AT THIS SPIKY SEED.
Elinor shows Ms. Mole the seed. Ms. Mole’s book is open to a picture of the same seed.
She replies,

THE STRAP AND THE SEED WORK THE
SAME WAY.

(Gasping)

Ari chases the monarch butterfly across the schoolyard.
Ms. Mole says,

Ari runs into a bush full of sticky seeds.
Ms. Mole adds,

THAT WAY, HE COULD GET OTHER
THINGS TO STICK TOGETHER.
(Velcro tearing)
Elinor replies,

Elinor hops around Olive.
They sing,

Ari crawls out of the bush covered in seeds.
Elinor and Olive scream, AH!
Ari pulls a seed off his shirt.
He adds,
YEAH, YOU COULD SAY WE REALLY
"STUCK" WITH IT!
(Laughing)
Ari shakes off the seeds as he flaps his wings. The seeds fall on Elinor and Olive.
