Transcript: Leave It to Ari / Snow Friend
Elinor, a white rabbit with long straight dark brown hair, wears a red and purple dress. She runs on a dirt path and stops to look at a monarch butterfly perched on a grey rock.
[Happy music plays]
Elinor sings, WHEREVER I GO
I SEE THINGS THAT I WANT
TO KNOW,
WHEREVER I AM I FIND THINGS
I WANT TO UNDERSTAND.
GO AND EXPLORE, LISTEN AND SEE
JUST FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
Elinor smiles as she sings on a swing on a swing set. Olive Elephant swings on a swing beside her. Olive wears a blue bow on her head, with a blue shirt, skirts and leggings. Ari Bat hands upside down from the bar on the top of the swing set.
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, WHY DO BIRDS SING?
AND HOW DO THEY FLY?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor watches ants through a magnifying glass.
Elinor sings WHY DO ANTS MARCH?
AND WHERE DO THEY HIDE?
THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
WHEREVER YOU TURN.
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
AND FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
[Chiming]
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, ASK A QUESTION
WHAT WILL YOU FIND?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, JUST LISTEN AND SEE
COME AND WONDER WITH ME.
Text above Elinor reads, “Elinor Wonders Why.” A magnifying glass with pink bunny ears replaces the letter ‘O’ in Elinor’s name. Text reads, “Leave It To Ari.” “Directed by Kevin Micallef.”
Elinor says, LEAVE IT TO ARI.
The wind blows a leaf and it lands by Ari’s father’s feet. He picks it up. He wears a yellow t-shirt under blue shirt and dark blue pants..
[Wind blows, rustling]
Ari’s father says, HMM, FALL IS HERE.
THAT'S FOR SURE.
[Giggling]
Elinor says, WOW, LOOK AT ALL
THE LEAVES!
Elinor jumps into a pile of red, orange, and yellow leaves.
She cheers, YAY!
[Rustling]
Ari says, THE YARD IS COVERED
WITH THEM!
[Giggling]
Ari slides on leaves as he says, WHOA, WHOA!
Elinor says, THIS IS SO FUN!
Elinor, Olive, and Ari throw leaves up into the air.
[Cheering, rustling]
Olive says, YAY, I LOVE ALL
THE COLOURS!
Olive relaxes as she watches a leaf fall in front of her.
[Olive sighs, rustling]
Elinor wraps the leaf around her finger.
Elinor says, LOOK, I CAN WRAP
ONE AROUND MY FINGER.
Ari says, HEY, LOOK AT THIS!
CAN MAKE LEAF BIRDS!
Ari falls backwards and moves leaves with his arms and legs. Olive and Elinor lie down and do the same.
[Upbeat music plays, rustling, giggling]
They stand and admire their leaf birds.
Elinor says, MINE LOOKS LIKE
AN OWL.
Olive says, MINE LOOKS LIKE
A FLAMINGO.
Ari says, MINE LOOKS LIKE, UH,
WELL, A BAT.
[Laughing, sighing]
Ari’s father says, WELL, KIDS, IT'S
TIME FOR ME TO START RAKING
THE LEAVES SO WE CAN SEE THE
GRASS AGAIN.
Ari says, I CAN HELP, DAD.
I'LL RAKE ALL THE LEAVES!
Ari’s father says, HUH, REALLY.
YOU SURE, BUDDY?
Ari says, YEAH! THE ONLY THING
WE HAD PLANNED TODAY WAS
TO GO LOOK FOR WORMS.
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, WE'LL HELP TOO.
Olive says, YEAH, THAT'S WHAT
FRIENDS ARE FOR.
Ari’s father says, WELL, THANKS, KIDS!
HERE ARE THE RAKES TO GATHER
THE LEAVES, AND HERE'S SOME BAGS
TO PUT THEM IN.
I'LL BE IN THE BACKYARD IF YOU
NEED ANYTHING.
[Whistling, rustling, upbeat music plays]
Ari holds up his green rake.
He says, LET'S RAKE SOME LEAVES,
SUPER LEAF RAKERS!
As Ari and Elinor rake leaves into a pile, Olive blows them with her trunk.
[Rustling, blowing, giggling]
[Laughing, rustling]
Elinor shouts, CANNONBALL!
Elinor jumps into a large pile of leaves. Ari and Olive jump into the pile.
Elinor says, THIS IS SO FUN!
[Giggling, upbeat music plays]
Olive, Ari, and Elinor stand beside bags filled with leaves.
Olive says, THERE, WE'RE
ALL DONE.
Elinor says, THERE WERE SO MANY LEAVES.
Ari says, BUT WE GOT THEM
ALL RAKED UP! AND NOW IT'S
SNACK TIME. HUH?
Ari watches leaves blow and land on the grass. He rakes them as Olive and Elinor put leaves in leaf bags.
[Rustling]
Ari says, HMPH, OKAY!
NOW WE'RE DONE.
Leaves land on the grass.
[Wind blows, rustling]
Ari says, WHAT? I THOUGHT W
E WERE DONE!
Elinor says, YEAH, WHERE
ARE ALL THESE NEW LEAVES
COMING FROM?
[Birds chirp]
Olive says, LET'S GO LOOK!
THERE ARE SO MANY TREES OUT
HERE. WITH SO MANY LEAVES!
[Rustling]
Ari says, OH NO, ARE WE GOING
TO HAVE TO RAKE THE WHOLE
FOREST? AWW, MAN, THAT WOULD
TAKE FOREVER!
[Sighs sadly]
Ari says, I'LL NEVER GET MY SNACK.
Olive says, I'M PRETTY SURE WE
DON'T HAVE TO RAKE THE WHOLE
FOREST, ARI. JUST YOUR YARD.
[Gentle music plays]
Elinor says, I WONDER, IF WE DON'T
RAKE THE LEAVES IN THE FOREST,
WHO DOES?
WHERE DO ALL THE LEAVES THAT
FALL FROM THE TREES GO?
Olive says, YEAH, WHY ISN'T THE
FOREST JUST FULL OF LEAVES?
In a thought bubble, Ari imagines yellow leaves falling off trees. New leaves grow then fall, grow then fall, slowly covering the tree trunks as the pile of leaves grows.
[Popping, slide whistles]
Ari says, I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT
THAT BEFORE. NEW LEAVES FALL
EVERY YEAR, SO WHAT HAPPENS
TO THEM? WHERE DO THEY GO?
[Whoosh]
Olive says, HUH. IT'S THE MYSTERY
OF THE MISSING LEAVES.
[Wind blows, leaves rustle]
Elinor says, THAT IS SO INTERESTING!
[Happy music plays]
Ari says, HMM, MAYBE THE TREES
RAKE THEIR OWN LEAVES. LIKE HOW
I CLEAN MY OWN ROOM.
Elinor says, UH, YOU NEVER CLEAN
YOUR ROOM, ARI.
Ari says, TRUE, BUT MAYBE TREES
ARE DIFFERENT.
Olive says, HMM, I'VE NEVER SEEN
A TREE WITH A RAKE BEFORE,
AND TREES CAN'T MOVE
AROUND, ANYWAY.
Elinor says, HEY, BIRDS CAN PICK
THINGS UP.
MAYBE THEY CLEAN UP THE LEAVES
IN THE FOREST AND USE THEM TO
MAKE THEIR NESTS.
In a thought bubble above her head, Elinor imagines a blue bird building a nest out of leaves.
[Popping]
Olive says, BUT THERE ARE TOO MANY
LEAVES, THE BIRDS CAN'T USE ALL
OF THEM OR THE NESTS WOULD BE
HUGE.
[Whoosh]
Elinor says, HMM, I HAVE AN IDEA.
LET'S GO LOOK AT THE LEAVES IN
THE FOREST AND SEE IF WE CAN
FIGURE IT OUT.
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS!
Ari says, YAY! I'LL TELL MY DAD!
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive says, I'LL BRING THE
MAGNIFYING GLASS AND NOTEBOOK.
Ari says, DAD, WE'RE DONE RAKING.
WE'RE GOING TO THE FOREST NOW TO
SOLVE A LEAFY MYSTERY.
Ari’s father says, OKAY, THANKS FOR
THE HELP. DON'T GO TOO FAR.
[Rustling]
Elinor hops in the forest as Ari flies excitedly behind her. Olive walks behind him.
Ari cheers, WHOO-HOO!
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor, Ari, and Olive sing,
FALL IS HERE, FALL IS HERE
AND THE LEAVES ARE FALLING DOWN.
WE WONDER WHO PICKS THEM
FROM THE GROUND.
OH WHERE, OH WHERE DO THE
LEAVES IN THE FOREST GO.
LOOK HIGH AND LOW,
THAT'S WE WANT TO KNOW.
WHY, OH WHY,
ISN'T THE FOREST FULL
RAKING THESE WOULD TAKE
TOO LONG.
EVEN IF YOU'RE REALLY STRONG.
[Rustling leaves]
Elinor, Ari, and Olive sing,
FALL IS HERE, FALL IS HERE
AND THE LEAVES ARE
FALLING DOWN.
WE WONDER WHO PICKS THEM
FROM THE GROUND.
Elinor says, SO MANY LEAVES FALL
FROM THE TREES EVERY YEAR.
WHY AREN'T THERE HUGE PILES
OF THEM EVERYWHERE?
Olive asks, YEAH, WHERE DO ALL
THE LEAVES GO?
[Stomach rumbles]
Ari says, MAYBE A GIANT BAT
EATS THEM.
[Giggling]
Elinor picks up a leaf.
[Rustling]
She says, LET'S TAKE A
CLOSER LOOK.
Ari says, THAT ONE LOOKS
JUST LIKE THE LEAVES AT
MY HOUSE!
Elinor says, IT'S SOFT AND BENDY
TOO, JUST LIKE THE ONES WE RAKE.
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive says, I'LL DRAW IT IN
MY NOTEBOOK. COLOURFUL
AND BENDY.
[Rustling]
Ari says, LET'S GET SOME MORE.
OH, SOME OF THESE
LOOK DIFFERENT.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, THAT IS SO INTERESTING!
THESE LEAVES ARE THE SAME SHAPE
BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THEY'RE
TURNING BROWN.
Ari says,IT'S ALL DRY AND CRUMBLY.
Olive draws a crumbling leaf beneath her drawing of a freshly fallen leaf.
[Scratching, rustling]
Olive says, BROWN LEAVES, DRY
AND CRUMBLY.
[Slide whistle]
Olive says, IF THESE LEAVES
ARE AT THE BOTTOM, THEY MUST
HAVE FALLEN AWHILE AGO.
[Ruslting]
Ari says, THEY'RE KINDA...UGH! MUSHY.
Olive draws flat leaves beneath the crumbling leaf on her notepad.
[Scratching]
She says, OLDER LEAVES, BROWN
AND MUSHY.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, LET'S DIG A LITTLE DEEPER.
HMM, THEY GET DARKER AND MUSHIER
THE DEEPER YOU GO.
OLIVE, CAN YOU PASS ME THE
MAGNIFYING GLASS?
[Rustling]
Elinor looks through a purple magnifying glass.
She says, LOOK, AND NOW THERE'S
JUST DIRT. BUT THE DIRT UNDER
THE LEAVES HAS BROKEN UP BITS
OF LEAVES IN IT.
Olive says, DIRT WITH LEAF BITS.
THAT'S CALLED "SOIL."
[Scratching]
Ari says, SO THE NEWEST LEAVES
AT THE TOP ARE COLOURFUL
AND BENDY.
AND THE LEAVES UNDER THAT
ARE DRY AND CRUMBLY.
Olive says, BUT THE OLDER LEAVES
BELOW ARE BROWN AND MUSHY.
Elinor says, AND THE OLDEST ONES
AT THE BOTTOM ARE BROKEN UP
AND MIXED IN WITH THE SOIL. HMM...
Elinor, Ari, and Olive say, OH!
Elinor says, I THINK I KNOW.
NOBODY RAKES THE LEAVES
IN THE FOREST. THEY DON'T
GO ANYWHERE.
In a thought bubble above her, Elinor imagines leaves falling from a tree.
[Rustling]
Olive says, YEAH, THEY JUST LAY
HERE AND GET OLD AND MUSHY
AND BROWN.
Ari says, AND BECOME PART OF
THE SOIL.
[They cheer, whoosh]
Elinor, Ari, and Olive say, WE DID IT!
Elinor says, WE FIGURED OUT
WHAT HAPPENS TO LEAVES IN
THE FOREST.
LET'S GO TELL YOUR DAD OUR
IDEA, ARI.
Ari says, YEAH, AND HAVE A SNACK!
[Giggling]
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari shouts, DAD! DAD, WE WENT
TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENS
TO LEAVES THAT FALL IN
THE FOREST.
Elinor adds, BECAUSE WE WONDERED,
IF NO ONE RAKES THEM, WHERE
WOULD THEY GO?
Ari’s father says, HM, NOW THAT'S
AN INTERESTING QUESTION! AND
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
[Chiming, gentle music plays]
Ari says, WE THINK THAT LEAVES
IN THE FOREST DON'T GET
CLEANED UP.
Olive says, THEY JUST FALL TO
THE GROUND.
Elinor says, THEY SIT THERE FOR
AWHILE AND GET BROWN
AND MUSHY.
Ari says, AND THEN THEY BREAK
INTO PIECES AND GET MIXED IN
WITH THE SOIL.
Ari’s father says, WOW! WHAT GREAT
LITTLE SCIENTISTS YOU ARE.
YES, LEAVES GET OLD AND BECOME
PART OF THE SOIL. AND NOT
ONLY THAT...
[Gasping]
Ari’s father says, THEY BECOME
PART OF THE FOOD THAT PLANTS
USE TO GROW.
Elinor says, WHOA. IT'S GREAT ALL
THOSE LEAVES ARE HELPFUL TO
THE FOREST.
Ari’s father says, YES, AND IT
HAPPENS NATURALLY ON THE
FOREST FLOOR.
WE CALL IT "COMPOSTING."
Elinor says, HMM. I WONDER....
CAN WE TURN THOSE LEAVES WE
RAKED INTO PART OF THE SOIL TOO?
[Ari’s father laughs]
Ari’s father says, WELL, ACTUALLY,
THAT WAS THE PLAN ALL ALONG.
HERE, I'LL SHOW YOU.
[Rustling, upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, COOL!
Ari’s father stands beside a grinder. Beside that, dirt spills out of an open box.
Olive asks, WHAT'S ALL THAT?
Ari’s father says, THIS IS OUR
COMPOSTING PILE. WE TAKE THE
LEAVES YOU RAKED, CHOP THEM UP,
AND THEN ADD IT TO THE PILE.
IT'S JUST LIKE THE FOREST FLOOR,
EXCEPT CUTTING THEM HELPS THEM
TURN INTO SOIL FASTER.
[Rustling]
The children say, OH!
[Gentle music plays]
Elinor says, THE ONES AT THE
BOTTOM ARE BROWN AND MUSHY,
JUST LIKE THE ONES IN THE FOREST!
Ari’s father says, THAT'S RIGHT,
THEY'VE BEEN SITTING HERE
FOR AWHILE.
WE ALSO PUT IN LEFTOVER FRUITS
AND VEGGIES.
Ari asks, THE LEFTOVER FOOD
ALSO TURNS INTO SOIL?
[His father chuckles]
Ari’s father says, YES, IT ALL MAKES
FOR NICE NEW SOIL THAT IS GREAT
FOR HELPING PLANTS GROW.
Ari’s father picks up a shovel full of composted soil.
[Rustling]
Ari asks, WHAT ARE YOU GOING
TO DO WITH THAT?
Ari’s father says, PUT IT IN
OUR GARDEN.
Ari says, OH!
[Rustling]
Elinor says, WOW!
Elinor says, OH. THERE'S SOMETHING
WIGGLING IN THERE.
A worm wiggles in the compost.
Olive says, IT'S A WORM! YES, WE
FOUND WORMS AFTER ALL, JUST
LIKE WE PLANNED TO! COOL.
Elinor picks up the worm. Ari picks up a second worm.
He says, LOOK AT THIS WORLD
CHAMPION WORM. IT'S THE
SQUIRMIEST AND THE WORMIEST.
Ari’s father says, IT SURE IS!
WORMS HELP TURN LEAVES
AND OLD FOOD INTO SOIL.
I BET IF YOU GO BACK TO THE
FOREST AND DIG AROUND SOME
MORE, YOU'LL FIND WORMS HELPING
THERE, TOO.
[Bird sings]
Elinor says, AND WE HELPED TOO.
Ari’s father says, YES YOU DID,
ELINOR! THANK YOU VERY MUCH
FOR BEING SO HELPFUL TODAY.
AND FOR BEING CURIOUS.
Leaves fall on the grass.
Ari exclaims, MORE LEAVES?
I GOT THIS, DAD! WHEN IT COMES
TO RAKING, JUST "LEAF" IT TO ME!
GET IT, LEAF IT TO ME?
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari’s father says, YEP, GOOD ONE,
BUDDY. I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.
[Laughing, rustling, wind blows]
Olive says, OH, ARI.
Ari holds an apple core over a wastebasket as he stands in a classroom.
[Dramatic notes play]
Ms Mole says, ARI, BRING
THAT APPLE CORE OVER HERE.
I HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE FOR
LEFTOVER FRUITS AND VEGGIES.
THESE LEFTOVERS WILL BE
SOMEONE ELSE'S LUNCH.
Olive says, GROSS, WHO WOULD
EAT THAT?
Ms. Mole says, WORMS!
TO THEM, IT'S DELICIOUS.
Ms. Mole places a pop-up book on her desk with trees and compost bins standing up on a pages.
She says, I'LL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT
IT IN TODAY'S STORY TIME.
NATURE HAS A WONDERFUL WAY
TO REUSE LEFTOVER FOOD, AND
ALSO WHOLE PLANTS AND LEAVES.
[Gentle music plays]
Ari says, THAT'S COMPOST!
WE DO THAT AT HOME.
Ms. Mole says, THAT'S RIGHT, A PILE
OF LEFTOVER FRUITS AND VEGGIES,
OR ANY OLD LEAVES AND PLANTS,
WILL TURN INTO NEW SOIL FOR
PLANTS TO GROW IN.
[Pages turn]
Elinor asks, BUT HOW DO LEAVES
AND LEFTOVERS TURN INTO
NEW SOIL?
Ms. Mole says, THE OLD LEAVES,
PLANTS, AND FOOD GET MUSHY
AND CRUMBLY.
AND THERE ARE ALSO SOME
SPECIAL HELPERS... WORMS!
Children exclaim, WHOA, COOL!
Ms. Mole says, THEY EAT IT UP!
[Ms. Mole laughs]
Children exclaim, WOW, AMAZING!
Ari asks, WAIT, DO THEY LIKE IT?
Ms. Mole says, IT'S THEIR FAVOURITE!
[Rustling]
Olive asks, HOW DO THE WORMS
TURN OLD STUFF INTO SOIL?
Ms. Mole says, WELL, THE WORMS EAT
THE LEAVES AND THE LEFTOVERS,
AND THEN THE WORM POOP
BECOMES PART OF THE SOIL.
[Page turns]
Ari says, WE PUT THE NEW SOIL
IN OUR GARDEN.
Ms. Mole says, YEP, IT HELPS THE
OTHER PLANTS GROW.
Olive says, AND THOSE PLANTS
CAN MAKE MORE FOOD FOR US.
IT'S ALL A BIG CIRCLE.
[Page turns]
An arrow points from a picture of a banana peel, apple core, carrot top and pieces of an onion to worms on dirt. An arrow points from the worms to a picture of bushes growing fruit. An arrow points from there to a picture of Ari eating an apple, with another arrow pointing back to the picture with the apple core.
[Slide whistles]
Ms. Mole says, YES, IT'S A CYCLE.
THE FOOD GETS REUSED, SO WE
CALL IT "RECYCLING."
LOOK AT ALL THIS WONDERFUL
WORM FOOD.
Elinor exclaims, WOW!
Ari says, COOL!
[Upbeat music plays]
The sun shines brightly on a snow hill as a hippopotamus wearing a yellow and orange snowsuit slides down it. Text reads, “Snow Friend.” “Directed by Kevin Micallef.”
Elinor says, SNOW FRIEND.
Elinor wears a pink scarf with her dress. Olive wears a blue coat with white trim.
Elinor says, WHAT A
BEAUTIFUL DAY!
[Background children shout, sliding, whooshing]
Ari says, WHOA! LOOK AT ALL
THE SNOW BUILDING! SNOW
FORTS, SNOW SLIDES,
SNOWBALLS, AND SNOW BATS!
WHOA!
Ari lies on the snow and moves his arms and legs.
[Rustling]
Ari says, BRR, THE SNOW FEELS
COLD WHEN YOU LAY DOWN IN IT.
ALTHOUGH THE SUN IS NICE
AND WARM.
[Sigh, rustling, grunt]
Ari jumps back to his feet.
Olive says, YOU'RE RIGHT, AND
THIS SNOW IS PERFECT FOR
MAKING SNOWBALLS.
[Rustling, whooshing]
Elinor says, YEAH, IT REALLY
STICKS TOGETHER.
CHECK THIS OUT!
Elinor rolls the snowball on the ground.
[Rustling]
She says, THE SNOWBALL PICKS
UP MORE AND MORE SNOW
WHEN YOU ROLL IT AROUND.
Ari says, WHOA, IT'S LIKE THE
SNOWBALL IS MAKING ITSELF.
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive shouts, ELINOR, ARI!
LOOK AT THIS! A SNOW CASTLE.
Olive turns over a green bucket and makes a snow castle.
Ari jokes, HEY, WE'RE AT THE
SNOW BEACH!
[Giggling]
Elinor’s large snowball rolls towards Ari.
[Elinor gasps, slide whistle]
Ari says, WHOA!
Ari flies out of the way. He slips and falls as he lands.
Ari says, I MEANT TO DO THAT.
Elinor says, SORRY, ARI!
MY SNOWBALL GOT AWAY
FROM ME. IT'S GETTING SO BIG!
Olive asks, WHAT ARE YOU
GONNA DO WITH IT, ELINOR?
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, HMM, I'M NOT SURE.
In a thought bubble above her head, Elinor imagines putting three snowballs together.
[Popping, whooshing]
Elinor says, I HAVE AN IDEA!
LET'S MAKE A SNOW FRIEND!
Ari says, NOT JUST ANY SNOW
FRIEND, THE BIGGEST SNOW
FRIEND EVER!
Ari, Elinor, and Olive push a large snowball over snow.
[Grunting]
Ari says, WHOA!
Ari headfirst falls into snow.
[Slide whistle, rustling, giggling]
[Upbeat music plays, grunting]
They create a second large snowball and lift it on to the first snowball.
Olive says, NOW THAT'S WHAT
I CALL A BIG SNOW FRIEND.
Ari says, IT'S A SNOW GIANT!
DUN-DUN-DUN!
HERE'S THE GIANT SNOW GIANT,
STOMPING AROUND THE WORLD.
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
Olive says, UH, ARI?
Ari asks, WHAT?
[Giggling]
Olive says, HE DOESN'T HAVE A
HEAD, SO HE CAN'T SEE WHERE
HE'S STOMPING.
Ari says, OH, YEAH, GOOD POINT.
HE'D CRASH INTO EVERYTHING. OOF!
[Rustling]
Olive’s mother calls, OLIVE, TIME TO
COME IN FOR DINNER.
Olive says, OKAY, MOM, BE
RIGHT THERE!
Elinor says, I'D BETTER GO HOME
TOO. BYE!
Ari says, WAIT, WHAT? WE CAN'T
LEAVE! OUR SNOW GIANT IS HEADLESS!
Olive says, WE'LL FINISH IT
TOMORROW, ARI.
Elinor says, WE PROMISE.
Ari sleeps upside down, hanging off his bed. He awakens, flips, and flies to a round window. Ari watches snow fall.
[Grunting]
Ari says, YES, LOTS MORE SNOW!
NOW WE CAN FINISH OUR
SNOW GIANT!
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari’s mother asks, WAIT A SECOND,
WHAT'S THE RUSH, ARI?
Ari eats quickly.
[Gulping]
Ari explains, I HAVE TO GET
TO OLIVE'S HOUSE, MOM.
WE'RE MAKING A SNOW GIANT.
Ari’s mother says, A SNOW GIANT?
WOW, WELL, YOU'RE GONNA NEED
YOUR HAT FOR THAT.
IT'S QUITE A BIT COLDER OUT
THERE TODAY THAN IT
WAS YESTERDAY.
[Whoosh]
Ari says, OH, OKAY, MOM! BYE!
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari wears a blue touque as he and Elinor approach Olive from different directions. Olive wears a puffy blue snowsuit with a blue covering around her trunk and purple mittens, hat and scarf.
Elinor says, HI!
Ari says, HEY, GUYS!
Elinor says, NICE SNOWSUIT, OLIVE.
Olive says, THANKS, IT'S GETTING
COLDER OUT. I NEED TO BUNDLE
UP TO STAY WARM.
Elinor says, YEP, LOOK AT ALL THE
FLUFFY NEW SNOW.
Ari says gleefully, THERE'S ENOUGH TO
GIVE OUR SNOW GIANT THREE HEADS!
[Giggling]
Elinor says, WE ONLY NEED ONE HEAD
FOR NOW, ARI.
Olive says, I'LL START THE SNOWBALL.
Olive picks up snow with her trunk and her snowball falls apart.
[Rustling]
Olive says, OH, BETTER TRY THAT AGAIN.
[Rustling]
Ari and Elinor say, HEY!
Olive says, THAT'S WEIRD,
THIS NEW SNOW WON'T STICK
TOGETHER. IT JUST FALLS APART.
Ari says, WHAT'S GOING ON?
WHY IS THE SNOW SO DIFFERENT
FROM YESTERDAY?
Elinor says, I'M NOT SURE. IT LOOKS
PRETTY MUCH THE SAME.
[Rustling]
Olive says, YEAH, BUT TRY
TO MAKE A BALL.
[Rustling]
Ari suggests, MAYBE WE JUST
HAVE TO SQUEEZE HARDER.
[Grunting]
Ari squeezes snow together.
He says, COME ON, SNOWBALL!
LET ME MAKE YOU!
Olive asks, IS IT WORKING?
[Grunting, upbeat music plays]
Ari says, I THINK SO?
Ari’s snowball falls apart.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, MAYBE THIS
SNOW JUST ISN'T GOOD FOR
MAKING SNOWBALLS.
Olive says, I WONDER IF IT'S
GOOD FOR SNOW CASTLES.
Olive gathers snow in her green bucket.
[Rustling]
Ari says, WAIT, I HAVE AN IDEA.
HAND ME THE BUCKET, PLEASE.
Ari flies up to the top of the two large snowballs.
[Flapping]
Ari turns over the bucket and the snow falls apart.
He explains, I THOUGHT WE COULD
MAKE A SNOW CASTLE HEAD,
BUT NO, I GUESS NOT.
Olive says, HMM, MAYBE IF I PACK
THE SNOW DOWN A LITTLE MORE.
HAND ME THE BUCKET, PLEASE, ARI.
[Rustling]
Olive’s mother says, HEY, KIDS, WHO
IS READY FOR SOME HOT CHOCOLATE?
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari gasps, HOT CHOCOLATE?!
Olive says, COMING, MOM!
Olive and Ari run into a house. Elinor pauses and looks at the snowballs. She turns and follows Ari into the house and Olive shuts a door behind her.
[Rustling, door creaks, slams]
Elinor says, UH, OLIVE, YOU STILL
HAVE THE BUCKET OF SNOW.
Olive says, YEAH, I BROUGHT IT
IN SO WE CAN KEEP OBSERVING IT.
Elinor says, GOOD THINKING.
HEY, LITTLE BUCKET OF SNOW.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE
OLIVE'S HOUSE?
Ari says, I WONDER IF BUCKETS
OF SNOW LIKE HOT CHOCOLATE.
[Giggling]
Olive’s mother opens a wood stove as Elinor, Ari, and Olive sit on a sofa wrapped in blankets as they sip their hot chocolate from mugs.
Elinor says, WELL, THIS IS COZY.
Olive says, THANKS, MOM.
[Gentle music plays]
Olive’s mother says, YOU'RE
WELCOME, KIDS.
[Olive’s mother shivers]
She says, IT IS REALLY COLD
OUT THERE!
Elinor says, I WONDER WHY THE
SNOW OUTSIDE DIDN'T STICK
TOGETHER TODAY.
Ari says, I DON'T KNOW, WHAT DO YOU
SAY, BUCKET OF SNOW?
IT DOESN'T SAY MUCH.
Olive says, WELL, I'M GLAD WE'RE
INSIDE WHERE IT'S NICE AND TOASTY.
RIGHT, BUCKET OF SNOW?
UH-OH, SOMETHING IS HAPPENING
TO THE SNOW. LOOK.
[Sloshing]
Elinor says, IT DOES LOOK DIFFERENT.
Ari says, YEAH, IT LOOKS WATERY.
[Splash]
Elinor declares, THAT'S SO INTERESTING!
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS.
Olive says, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.
Olive puts the bucket on the floor.
[Thump, splash]
Elinor says, IT FEELS DIFFERENT,
TOO. IT'S WET AND SLUSHY.
Olive says, IT'S MORE LIKE THE
SNOW FROM YESTERDAY.
WAIT A MINUTE.
Olive makes a snowball.
[Rustling]
Elinor exclaims, IT WORKS! YOU
CAN MAKE A SNOWBALL NOW!
Olive says, YEAH, THIS SNOW STICKS
TOGETHER AND DOESN'T CRUMBLE.
[Giggling]
Olive throws the snowball up in the air. Ari tries to catch it but it slips out of his hands.
Ari says, WHOA, WHOA, WHOA!
FINALLY! A SNOWBALL!
Olive says, BUT WHY DID THE SNOW
CHANGE? IT USED TO BE FLUFFY,
BUT NOW IT'S SLUSHY.
Ari says, ALL WE DID WAS BRING
IT INTO THE HOUSE.
Elinor says, HMM. WAIT A MINUTE,
IT'S MUCH WARMER INSIDE THE
HOUSE. MAYBE THAT FLUFFY SNOW
TURNS SLUSHY AND STICKY WHEN
IT WARMS UP.
Olive’s mother says, YOU'RE RIGHT,
ELINOR. THAT'S BECAUSE SNOW
MELTS WHEN IT GETS WARM.
Elinor says, THAT'S WHAT MAKES
IT SLUSHY!
Elinor says, AND STICKY SO WE
CAN MAKE THINGS WITH IT.
Ari adds, LIKE SNOWBALLS!
Olive’s mother says, NICE OBSERVING,
SCIENTISTS. NOW PLEASE BE CAREFUL
NOT TO GET SLUSHY SNOW ON
THE COUCH.
Ari says, OH, RIGHT.
Ari drops the snowball into the bucket.
[Squelch]
Olive’s mother opens the wood stove and puts another log on a fire.
[Creak]
She says, BRR!
Olive says, HMM.
[Creak]
Olive says, WAIT, I THINK I KNOW
WHY THE SNOW IS DIFFERENT
TODAY THAN YESTERDAY. IT'S
A LOT COLDER OUTSIDE TODAY.
In a thought bubble above her head, Elinor remembers making snowballs.
[Happy music plays, popping, whooshing]
Elinor says, HMM, YEAH. YESTERDAY
WAS WARMER, SO THE SNOW WAS
SLUSHIER AND STICKIER.
In a thought bubble above her head, Olive remembers her snowball falling apart.
[Popping, rustling]
Olive says, BUT TODAY, IT'S COLDER,
SO THE SNOW STAYS FLUFFY AND
CRUMBLY. THAT'S IT!
Ari says, WE FIGURED OUT THE
SNOW MYSTERY! YES!
Elinor, Ari, and Olive high five.
[Hands slap]
Elinor says, THAT EXPLAINS WHY
THE SNOW IS DIFFERENT, BUT
HOW ARE WE GOING TO FINISH
OUR SNOW GIANT?
Olive says, THE SNOW OUTSIDE
WON'T STICK TOGETHER, IT'S
TOO COLD.
Ari says, WE NEED TO WARM UP
THE SNOW OUTSIDE. BUT HOW?
WHAT DO YOU THINK, BUCKET
OF SNOW? ANY IDEAS?
Elinor says, HMM.
[Gasp, music notes play]
She says, I'VE GOT IT! IF WE CAN'T
WARM UP THE SNOW OUTSIDE,
WE'LL WARM IT UP IN HERE.
Olive says, WE CAN BRING THE
SNOW INSIDE TO WARM IT UP.
Ari says, AND THEN TAKE IT
OUTSIDE TO BUILD.
SNOW GIANT, GET READY FOR
YOUR HEAD!
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive says, PERFECT.
Ari picks up a bucket full of snow and carries it to Elinor inside the house.
[Flapping]
Elinor sings, YESTERDAY WAS
WARM AND THE SNOW COULD
REALLY STICK.
Olive takes the fresh snow and gives Elinor a bucket of slushy snow.
Olive sings, TODAY IT IS COLDER,
AND IT DOESN'T STICK A BIT.
WE'LL BRING THE SNOW INSIDE
WHERE IT'S NICE AND TOASTY.
Elinor sings, THEN WE'LL WAIT
FOR IT TO MELT A BIT AND TAKE
IT OUT AGAIN.
Ari, Elinor, and Olive sing, WARM UP
THE SNOW, WARM UP THE SNOW.
MAKE THE SNOW STICKY
AND WE'RE GOOD TO GO.
WHEN THE SNOW IS COLD,
ITS FLUFFY, WHEN IT'S WARM
IT'S SLUSHY.
WE CAN BUILD ANYTHING WHEN
WE WARM UP THE SNOW.
Elinor sings, OUR SNOW FRIEND
ISN'T FINISHED, WE HAVE TO
MAKE ITS HEAD.
Olive sings, SO IF WE CAN'T USE COLD,
COLD SNOW, WELL WARM IT UP AGAIN.
Ari sings, WHEN THE SNOW GETS
WET, WE'LL PUT IT ON OUR FRIEND.
Elinor sings, WE'LL MAKE A GOOD
SNOWBALL AND USE IT FOR ITS HEAD.
[Rustling]
Ari, Elinor, and Olive sing, WARM
UP THE SNOW, HEY, WARM UP
THE SNOW, HEY.
WE CAN BUILD ANYTHING WHEN
WE WARM UP THE SNOW.
[Bird chirps]
Ari, Elinor, and Olive admire the finished snow giant.
Elinor exclaims, WOW!
Olive says, NOW THAT'S WHAT
I CALL A GIANT SNOW GIANT.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, WE FIGURED OUT HOW
TO MAKE A GIANT HEAD BY WARMING
UP THE SNOW.
Ari says, NOW HE'S SO BIG HE COULD
CRUSH CARS AND HOUSES AND
MOUNTAINS. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
BOOM, BOOM!
Elinor says, UH, ARI, OUR SNOW
GIANT WOULD NEVER DO THAT.
Ari asks, WHY NOT?
Olive says, HE'S FRIENDLY.
Olive looks up at the snow giant.
She asks, UH, A LITTLE HELP?
Elinor and Ari boost Olive up to the head of the snow giant. Olive puts snow eyes on the top snowball and uses her finger to make a smile in the snowball.
[Olive hums, scrape, happy music plays]
Ari says, OH, OKAY, THAT
WORKS TOO.
Ari flies up to the head of the snow giant and drops the bucket on it. The bucket lands upside down, resembling a hat.
[Happy music plays]
Aris asks, HOW'S IT GOING, GIANT,
FRIENDLY SNOW FRIEND?
AWW, I THINK HE REALLY LIKES ME.
[Giggling]
[Upbeat music plays]

Elinor sings, WHEREVER I GO
I SEE THINGS THAT I WANT
TO KNOW,
WHEREVER I AM I FIND THINGS
I WANT TO UNDERSTAND.
GO AND EXPLORE, LISTEN AND SEE
JUST FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
Elinor smiles as she sings on a swing on a swing set. Olive Elephant swings on a swing beside her. Olive wears a blue bow on her head, with a blue shirt, skirts and leggings. Ari Bat hands upside down from the bar on the top of the swing set.
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, WHY DO BIRDS SING?
AND HOW DO THEY FLY?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor watches ants through a magnifying glass.
Elinor sings WHY DO ANTS MARCH?
AND WHERE DO THEY HIDE?
THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
WHEREVER YOU TURN.
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
AND FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
[Chiming]
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, ASK A QUESTION
WHAT WILL YOU FIND?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, JUST LISTEN AND SEE
COME AND WONDER WITH ME.
Text above Elinor reads, “Elinor Wonders Why.” A magnifying glass with pink bunny ears replaces the letter ‘O’ in Elinor’s name. Text reads, “Leave It To Ari.” “Directed by Kevin Micallef.”
Elinor says, LEAVE IT TO ARI.
The wind blows a leaf and it lands by Ari’s father’s feet. He picks it up. He wears a yellow t-shirt under blue shirt and dark blue pants..
[Wind blows, rustling]
Ari’s father says, HMM, FALL IS HERE.
THAT'S FOR SURE.
[Giggling]
Elinor says, WOW, LOOK AT ALL
THE LEAVES!
Elinor jumps into a pile of red, orange, and yellow leaves.
She cheers, YAY!
[Rustling]
Ari says, THE YARD IS COVERED
WITH THEM!
[Giggling]
Ari slides on leaves as he says, WHOA, WHOA!
Elinor says, THIS IS SO FUN!
Elinor, Olive, and Ari throw leaves up into the air.
[Cheering, rustling]
Olive says, YAY, I LOVE ALL
THE COLOURS!
Olive relaxes as she watches a leaf fall in front of her.
[Olive sighs, rustling]
Elinor wraps the leaf around her finger.
Elinor says, LOOK, I CAN WRAP
ONE AROUND MY FINGER.
Ari says, HEY, LOOK AT THIS!
CAN MAKE LEAF BIRDS!
Ari falls backwards and moves leaves with his arms and legs. Olive and Elinor lie down and do the same.
[Upbeat music plays, rustling, giggling]
They stand and admire their leaf birds.
Elinor says, MINE LOOKS LIKE
AN OWL.
Olive says, MINE LOOKS LIKE
A FLAMINGO.
Ari says, MINE LOOKS LIKE, UH,
WELL, A BAT.
[Laughing, sighing]
Ari’s father says, WELL, KIDS, IT'S
TIME FOR ME TO START RAKING
THE LEAVES SO WE CAN SEE THE
GRASS AGAIN.
Ari says, I CAN HELP, DAD.
I'LL RAKE ALL THE LEAVES!
Ari’s father says, HUH, REALLY.
YOU SURE, BUDDY?
Ari says, YEAH! THE ONLY THING
WE HAD PLANNED TODAY WAS
TO GO LOOK FOR WORMS.
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, WE'LL HELP TOO.
Olive says, YEAH, THAT'S WHAT
FRIENDS ARE FOR.
Ari’s father says, WELL, THANKS, KIDS!
HERE ARE THE RAKES TO GATHER
THE LEAVES, AND HERE'S SOME BAGS
TO PUT THEM IN.
I'LL BE IN THE BACKYARD IF YOU
NEED ANYTHING.
[Whistling, rustling, upbeat music plays]
Ari holds up his green rake.
He says, LET'S RAKE SOME LEAVES,
SUPER LEAF RAKERS!
As Ari and Elinor rake leaves into a pile, Olive blows them with her trunk.
[Rustling, blowing, giggling]
[Laughing, rustling]
Elinor shouts, CANNONBALL!
Elinor jumps into a large pile of leaves. Ari and Olive jump into the pile.
Elinor says, THIS IS SO FUN!
[Giggling, upbeat music plays]
Olive, Ari, and Elinor stand beside bags filled with leaves.
Olive says, THERE, WE'RE
ALL DONE.
Elinor says, THERE WERE SO MANY LEAVES.
Ari says, BUT WE GOT THEM
ALL RAKED UP! AND NOW IT'S
SNACK TIME. HUH?
Ari watches leaves blow and land on the grass. He rakes them as Olive and Elinor put leaves in leaf bags.
[Rustling]
Ari says, HMPH, OKAY!
NOW WE'RE DONE.
Leaves land on the grass.
[Wind blows, rustling]
Ari says, WHAT? I THOUGHT W
E WERE DONE!
Elinor says, YEAH, WHERE
ARE ALL THESE NEW LEAVES
COMING FROM?
[Birds chirp]
Olive says, LET'S GO LOOK!
THERE ARE SO MANY TREES OUT
HERE. WITH SO MANY LEAVES!
[Rustling]
Ari says, OH NO, ARE WE GOING
TO HAVE TO RAKE THE WHOLE
FOREST? AWW, MAN, THAT WOULD
TAKE FOREVER!
[Sighs sadly]
Ari says, I'LL NEVER GET MY SNACK.
Olive says, I'M PRETTY SURE WE
DON'T HAVE TO RAKE THE WHOLE
FOREST, ARI. JUST YOUR YARD.
[Gentle music plays]
Elinor says, I WONDER, IF WE DON'T
RAKE THE LEAVES IN THE FOREST,
WHO DOES?
WHERE DO ALL THE LEAVES THAT
FALL FROM THE TREES GO?
Olive says, YEAH, WHY ISN'T THE
FOREST JUST FULL OF LEAVES?
In a thought bubble, Ari imagines yellow leaves falling off trees. New leaves grow then fall, grow then fall, slowly covering the tree trunks as the pile of leaves grows.
[Popping, slide whistles]
Ari says, I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT
THAT BEFORE. NEW LEAVES FALL
EVERY YEAR, SO WHAT HAPPENS
TO THEM? WHERE DO THEY GO?
[Whoosh]
Olive says, HUH. IT'S THE MYSTERY
OF THE MISSING LEAVES.
[Wind blows, leaves rustle]
Elinor says, THAT IS SO INTERESTING!
[Happy music plays]
Ari says, HMM, MAYBE THE TREES
RAKE THEIR OWN LEAVES. LIKE HOW
I CLEAN MY OWN ROOM.
Elinor says, UH, YOU NEVER CLEAN
YOUR ROOM, ARI.
Ari says, TRUE, BUT MAYBE TREES
ARE DIFFERENT.
Olive says, HMM, I'VE NEVER SEEN
A TREE WITH A RAKE BEFORE,
AND TREES CAN'T MOVE
AROUND, ANYWAY.
Elinor says, HEY, BIRDS CAN PICK
THINGS UP.
MAYBE THEY CLEAN UP THE LEAVES
IN THE FOREST AND USE THEM TO
MAKE THEIR NESTS.
In a thought bubble above her head, Elinor imagines a blue bird building a nest out of leaves.
[Popping]
Olive says, BUT THERE ARE TOO MANY
LEAVES, THE BIRDS CAN'T USE ALL
OF THEM OR THE NESTS WOULD BE
HUGE.
[Whoosh]
Elinor says, HMM, I HAVE AN IDEA.
LET'S GO LOOK AT THE LEAVES IN
THE FOREST AND SEE IF WE CAN
FIGURE IT OUT.
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS!
Ari says, YAY! I'LL TELL MY DAD!
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive says, I'LL BRING THE
MAGNIFYING GLASS AND NOTEBOOK.
Ari says, DAD, WE'RE DONE RAKING.
WE'RE GOING TO THE FOREST NOW TO
SOLVE A LEAFY MYSTERY.
Ari’s father says, OKAY, THANKS FOR
THE HELP. DON'T GO TOO FAR.
[Rustling]
Elinor hops in the forest as Ari flies excitedly behind her. Olive walks behind him.
Ari cheers, WHOO-HOO!
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor, Ari, and Olive sing,
FALL IS HERE, FALL IS HERE
AND THE LEAVES ARE FALLING DOWN.
WE WONDER WHO PICKS THEM
FROM THE GROUND.
OH WHERE, OH WHERE DO THE
LEAVES IN THE FOREST GO.
LOOK HIGH AND LOW,
THAT'S WE WANT TO KNOW.
WHY, OH WHY,
ISN'T THE FOREST FULL
RAKING THESE WOULD TAKE
TOO LONG.
EVEN IF YOU'RE REALLY STRONG.
[Rustling leaves]
Elinor, Ari, and Olive sing,
FALL IS HERE, FALL IS HERE
AND THE LEAVES ARE
FALLING DOWN.
WE WONDER WHO PICKS THEM
FROM THE GROUND.
Elinor says, SO MANY LEAVES FALL
FROM THE TREES EVERY YEAR.
WHY AREN'T THERE HUGE PILES
OF THEM EVERYWHERE?
Olive asks, YEAH, WHERE DO ALL
THE LEAVES GO?
[Stomach rumbles]
Ari says, MAYBE A GIANT BAT
EATS THEM.
[Giggling]
Elinor picks up a leaf.
[Rustling]
She says, LET'S TAKE A
CLOSER LOOK.
Ari says, THAT ONE LOOKS
JUST LIKE THE LEAVES AT
MY HOUSE!
Elinor says, IT'S SOFT AND BENDY
TOO, JUST LIKE THE ONES WE RAKE.
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive says, I'LL DRAW IT IN
MY NOTEBOOK. COLOURFUL
AND BENDY.
[Rustling]
Ari says, LET'S GET SOME MORE.
OH, SOME OF THESE
LOOK DIFFERENT.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, THAT IS SO INTERESTING!
THESE LEAVES ARE THE SAME SHAPE
BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THEY'RE
TURNING BROWN.
Ari says,IT'S ALL DRY AND CRUMBLY.
Olive draws a crumbling leaf beneath her drawing of a freshly fallen leaf.
[Scratching, rustling]
Olive says, BROWN LEAVES, DRY
AND CRUMBLY.
[Slide whistle]
Olive says, IF THESE LEAVES
ARE AT THE BOTTOM, THEY MUST
HAVE FALLEN AWHILE AGO.
[Ruslting]
Ari says, THEY'RE KINDA...UGH! MUSHY.
Olive draws flat leaves beneath the crumbling leaf on her notepad.
[Scratching]
She says, OLDER LEAVES, BROWN
AND MUSHY.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, LET'S DIG A LITTLE DEEPER.
HMM, THEY GET DARKER AND MUSHIER
THE DEEPER YOU GO.
OLIVE, CAN YOU PASS ME THE
MAGNIFYING GLASS?
[Rustling]
Elinor looks through a purple magnifying glass.
She says, LOOK, AND NOW THERE'S
JUST DIRT. BUT THE DIRT UNDER
THE LEAVES HAS BROKEN UP BITS
OF LEAVES IN IT.
Olive says, DIRT WITH LEAF BITS.
THAT'S CALLED "SOIL."
[Scratching]
Ari says, SO THE NEWEST LEAVES
AT THE TOP ARE COLOURFUL
AND BENDY.
AND THE LEAVES UNDER THAT
ARE DRY AND CRUMBLY.
Olive says, BUT THE OLDER LEAVES
BELOW ARE BROWN AND MUSHY.
Elinor says, AND THE OLDEST ONES
AT THE BOTTOM ARE BROKEN UP
AND MIXED IN WITH THE SOIL. HMM...
Elinor, Ari, and Olive say, OH!
Elinor says, I THINK I KNOW.
NOBODY RAKES THE LEAVES
IN THE FOREST. THEY DON'T
GO ANYWHERE.
In a thought bubble above her, Elinor imagines leaves falling from a tree.
[Rustling]
Olive says, YEAH, THEY JUST LAY
HERE AND GET OLD AND MUSHY
AND BROWN.
Ari says, AND BECOME PART OF
THE SOIL.
[They cheer, whoosh]
Elinor, Ari, and Olive say, WE DID IT!
Elinor says, WE FIGURED OUT
WHAT HAPPENS TO LEAVES IN
THE FOREST.
LET'S GO TELL YOUR DAD OUR
IDEA, ARI.
Ari says, YEAH, AND HAVE A SNACK!
[Giggling]
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari shouts, DAD! DAD, WE WENT
TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENS
TO LEAVES THAT FALL IN
THE FOREST.
Elinor adds, BECAUSE WE WONDERED,
IF NO ONE RAKES THEM, WHERE
WOULD THEY GO?
Ari’s father says, HM, NOW THAT'S
AN INTERESTING QUESTION! AND
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
[Chiming, gentle music plays]
Ari says, WE THINK THAT LEAVES
IN THE FOREST DON'T GET
CLEANED UP.
Olive says, THEY JUST FALL TO
THE GROUND.
Elinor says, THEY SIT THERE FOR
AWHILE AND GET BROWN
AND MUSHY.
Ari says, AND THEN THEY BREAK
INTO PIECES AND GET MIXED IN
WITH THE SOIL.
Ari’s father says, WOW! WHAT GREAT
LITTLE SCIENTISTS YOU ARE.
YES, LEAVES GET OLD AND BECOME
PART OF THE SOIL. AND NOT
ONLY THAT...
[Gasping]
Ari’s father says, THEY BECOME
PART OF THE FOOD THAT PLANTS
USE TO GROW.
Elinor says, WHOA. IT'S GREAT ALL
THOSE LEAVES ARE HELPFUL TO
THE FOREST.
Ari’s father says, YES, AND IT
HAPPENS NATURALLY ON THE
FOREST FLOOR.
WE CALL IT "COMPOSTING."
Elinor says, HMM. I WONDER....
CAN WE TURN THOSE LEAVES WE
RAKED INTO PART OF THE SOIL TOO?
[Ari’s father laughs]
Ari’s father says, WELL, ACTUALLY,
THAT WAS THE PLAN ALL ALONG.
HERE, I'LL SHOW YOU.
[Rustling, upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, COOL!
Ari’s father stands beside a grinder. Beside that, dirt spills out of an open box.
Olive asks, WHAT'S ALL THAT?
Ari’s father says, THIS IS OUR
COMPOSTING PILE. WE TAKE THE
LEAVES YOU RAKED, CHOP THEM UP,
AND THEN ADD IT TO THE PILE.
IT'S JUST LIKE THE FOREST FLOOR,
EXCEPT CUTTING THEM HELPS THEM
TURN INTO SOIL FASTER.
[Rustling]
The children say, OH!
[Gentle music plays]
Elinor says, THE ONES AT THE
BOTTOM ARE BROWN AND MUSHY,
JUST LIKE THE ONES IN THE FOREST!
Ari’s father says, THAT'S RIGHT,
THEY'VE BEEN SITTING HERE
FOR AWHILE.
WE ALSO PUT IN LEFTOVER FRUITS
AND VEGGIES.
Ari asks, THE LEFTOVER FOOD
ALSO TURNS INTO SOIL?
[His father chuckles]
Ari’s father says, YES, IT ALL MAKES
FOR NICE NEW SOIL THAT IS GREAT
FOR HELPING PLANTS GROW.
Ari’s father picks up a shovel full of composted soil.
[Rustling]
Ari asks, WHAT ARE YOU GOING
TO DO WITH THAT?
Ari’s father says, PUT IT IN
OUR GARDEN.
Ari says, OH!
[Rustling]
Elinor says, WOW!
Elinor says, OH. THERE'S SOMETHING
WIGGLING IN THERE.
A worm wiggles in the compost.
Olive says, IT'S A WORM! YES, WE
FOUND WORMS AFTER ALL, JUST
LIKE WE PLANNED TO! COOL.
Elinor picks up the worm. Ari picks up a second worm.
He says, LOOK AT THIS WORLD
CHAMPION WORM. IT'S THE
SQUIRMIEST AND THE WORMIEST.
Ari’s father says, IT SURE IS!
WORMS HELP TURN LEAVES
AND OLD FOOD INTO SOIL.
I BET IF YOU GO BACK TO THE
FOREST AND DIG AROUND SOME
MORE, YOU'LL FIND WORMS HELPING
THERE, TOO.
[Bird sings]
Elinor says, AND WE HELPED TOO.
Ari’s father says, YES YOU DID,
ELINOR! THANK YOU VERY MUCH
FOR BEING SO HELPFUL TODAY.
AND FOR BEING CURIOUS.
Leaves fall on the grass.
Ari exclaims, MORE LEAVES?
I GOT THIS, DAD! WHEN IT COMES
TO RAKING, JUST "LEAF" IT TO ME!
GET IT, LEAF IT TO ME?
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari’s father says, YEP, GOOD ONE,
BUDDY. I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.
[Laughing, rustling, wind blows]
Olive says, OH, ARI.
Ari holds an apple core over a wastebasket as he stands in a classroom.
[Dramatic notes play]
Ms Mole says, ARI, BRING
THAT APPLE CORE OVER HERE.
I HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE FOR
LEFTOVER FRUITS AND VEGGIES.
THESE LEFTOVERS WILL BE
SOMEONE ELSE'S LUNCH.
Olive says, GROSS, WHO WOULD
EAT THAT?
Ms. Mole says, WORMS!
TO THEM, IT'S DELICIOUS.
Ms. Mole places a pop-up book on her desk with trees and compost bins standing up on a pages.
She says, I'LL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT
IT IN TODAY'S STORY TIME.
NATURE HAS A WONDERFUL WAY
TO REUSE LEFTOVER FOOD, AND
ALSO WHOLE PLANTS AND LEAVES.
[Gentle music plays]
Ari says, THAT'S COMPOST!
WE DO THAT AT HOME.
Ms. Mole says, THAT'S RIGHT, A PILE
OF LEFTOVER FRUITS AND VEGGIES,
OR ANY OLD LEAVES AND PLANTS,
WILL TURN INTO NEW SOIL FOR
PLANTS TO GROW IN.
[Pages turn]
Elinor asks, BUT HOW DO LEAVES
AND LEFTOVERS TURN INTO
NEW SOIL?
Ms. Mole says, THE OLD LEAVES,
PLANTS, AND FOOD GET MUSHY
AND CRUMBLY.
AND THERE ARE ALSO SOME
SPECIAL HELPERS... WORMS!
Children exclaim, WHOA, COOL!
Ms. Mole says, THEY EAT IT UP!
[Ms. Mole laughs]
Children exclaim, WOW, AMAZING!
Ari asks, WAIT, DO THEY LIKE IT?
Ms. Mole says, IT'S THEIR FAVOURITE!
[Rustling]
Olive asks, HOW DO THE WORMS
TURN OLD STUFF INTO SOIL?
Ms. Mole says, WELL, THE WORMS EAT
THE LEAVES AND THE LEFTOVERS,
AND THEN THE WORM POOP
BECOMES PART OF THE SOIL.
[Page turns]
Ari says, WE PUT THE NEW SOIL
IN OUR GARDEN.
Ms. Mole says, YEP, IT HELPS THE
OTHER PLANTS GROW.
Olive says, AND THOSE PLANTS
CAN MAKE MORE FOOD FOR US.
IT'S ALL A BIG CIRCLE.
[Page turns]
An arrow points from a picture of a banana peel, apple core, carrot top and pieces of an onion to worms on dirt. An arrow points from the worms to a picture of bushes growing fruit. An arrow points from there to a picture of Ari eating an apple, with another arrow pointing back to the picture with the apple core.
[Slide whistles]
Ms. Mole says, YES, IT'S A CYCLE.
THE FOOD GETS REUSED, SO WE
CALL IT "RECYCLING."
LOOK AT ALL THIS WONDERFUL
WORM FOOD.
Elinor exclaims, WOW!
Ari says, COOL!
[Upbeat music plays]
The sun shines brightly on a snow hill as a hippopotamus wearing a yellow and orange snowsuit slides down it. Text reads, “Snow Friend.” “Directed by Kevin Micallef.”
Elinor says, SNOW FRIEND.
Elinor wears a pink scarf with her dress. Olive wears a blue coat with white trim.
Elinor says, WHAT A
BEAUTIFUL DAY!
[Background children shout, sliding, whooshing]
Ari says, WHOA! LOOK AT ALL
THE SNOW BUILDING! SNOW
FORTS, SNOW SLIDES,
SNOWBALLS, AND SNOW BATS!
WHOA!
Ari lies on the snow and moves his arms and legs.
[Rustling]
Ari says, BRR, THE SNOW FEELS
COLD WHEN YOU LAY DOWN IN IT.
ALTHOUGH THE SUN IS NICE
AND WARM.
[Sigh, rustling, grunt]
Ari jumps back to his feet.
Olive says, YOU'RE RIGHT, AND
THIS SNOW IS PERFECT FOR
MAKING SNOWBALLS.
[Rustling, whooshing]
Elinor says, YEAH, IT REALLY
STICKS TOGETHER.
CHECK THIS OUT!
Elinor rolls the snowball on the ground.
[Rustling]
She says, THE SNOWBALL PICKS
UP MORE AND MORE SNOW
WHEN YOU ROLL IT AROUND.
Ari says, WHOA, IT'S LIKE THE
SNOWBALL IS MAKING ITSELF.
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive shouts, ELINOR, ARI!
LOOK AT THIS! A SNOW CASTLE.
Olive turns over a green bucket and makes a snow castle.
Ari jokes, HEY, WE'RE AT THE
SNOW BEACH!
[Giggling]
Elinor’s large snowball rolls towards Ari.
[Elinor gasps, slide whistle]
Ari says, WHOA!
Ari flies out of the way. He slips and falls as he lands.
Ari says, I MEANT TO DO THAT.
Elinor says, SORRY, ARI!
MY SNOWBALL GOT AWAY
FROM ME. IT'S GETTING SO BIG!
Olive asks, WHAT ARE YOU
GONNA DO WITH IT, ELINOR?
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, HMM, I'M NOT SURE.
In a thought bubble above her head, Elinor imagines putting three snowballs together.
[Popping, whooshing]
Elinor says, I HAVE AN IDEA!
LET'S MAKE A SNOW FRIEND!
Ari says, NOT JUST ANY SNOW
FRIEND, THE BIGGEST SNOW
FRIEND EVER!
Ari, Elinor, and Olive push a large snowball over snow.
[Grunting]
Ari says, WHOA!
Ari headfirst falls into snow.
[Slide whistle, rustling, giggling]
[Upbeat music plays, grunting]
They create a second large snowball and lift it on to the first snowball.
Olive says, NOW THAT'S WHAT
I CALL A BIG SNOW FRIEND.
Ari says, IT'S A SNOW GIANT!
DUN-DUN-DUN!
HERE'S THE GIANT SNOW GIANT,
STOMPING AROUND THE WORLD.
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
Olive says, UH, ARI?
Ari asks, WHAT?
[Giggling]
Olive says, HE DOESN'T HAVE A
HEAD, SO HE CAN'T SEE WHERE
HE'S STOMPING.
Ari says, OH, YEAH, GOOD POINT.
HE'D CRASH INTO EVERYTHING. OOF!
[Rustling]
Olive’s mother calls, OLIVE, TIME TO
COME IN FOR DINNER.
Olive says, OKAY, MOM, BE
RIGHT THERE!
Elinor says, I'D BETTER GO HOME
TOO. BYE!
Ari says, WAIT, WHAT? WE CAN'T
LEAVE! OUR SNOW GIANT IS HEADLESS!
Olive says, WE'LL FINISH IT
TOMORROW, ARI.
Elinor says, WE PROMISE.
Ari sleeps upside down, hanging off his bed. He awakens, flips, and flies to a round window. Ari watches snow fall.
[Grunting]
Ari says, YES, LOTS MORE SNOW!
NOW WE CAN FINISH OUR
SNOW GIANT!
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari’s mother asks, WAIT A SECOND,
WHAT'S THE RUSH, ARI?
Ari eats quickly.
[Gulping]
Ari explains, I HAVE TO GET
TO OLIVE'S HOUSE, MOM.
WE'RE MAKING A SNOW GIANT.
Ari’s mother says, A SNOW GIANT?
WOW, WELL, YOU'RE GONNA NEED
YOUR HAT FOR THAT.
IT'S QUITE A BIT COLDER OUT
THERE TODAY THAN IT
WAS YESTERDAY.
[Whoosh]
Ari says, OH, OKAY, MOM! BYE!
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari wears a blue touque as he and Elinor approach Olive from different directions. Olive wears a puffy blue snowsuit with a blue covering around her trunk and purple mittens, hat and scarf.
Elinor says, HI!
Ari says, HEY, GUYS!
Elinor says, NICE SNOWSUIT, OLIVE.
Olive says, THANKS, IT'S GETTING
COLDER OUT. I NEED TO BUNDLE
UP TO STAY WARM.
Elinor says, YEP, LOOK AT ALL THE
FLUFFY NEW SNOW.
Ari says gleefully, THERE'S ENOUGH TO
GIVE OUR SNOW GIANT THREE HEADS!
[Giggling]
Elinor says, WE ONLY NEED ONE HEAD
FOR NOW, ARI.
Olive says, I'LL START THE SNOWBALL.
Olive picks up snow with her trunk and her snowball falls apart.
[Rustling]
Olive says, OH, BETTER TRY THAT AGAIN.
[Rustling]
Ari and Elinor say, HEY!
Olive says, THAT'S WEIRD,
THIS NEW SNOW WON'T STICK
TOGETHER. IT JUST FALLS APART.
Ari says, WHAT'S GOING ON?
WHY IS THE SNOW SO DIFFERENT
FROM YESTERDAY?
Elinor says, I'M NOT SURE. IT LOOKS
PRETTY MUCH THE SAME.
[Rustling]
Olive says, YEAH, BUT TRY
TO MAKE A BALL.
[Rustling]
Ari suggests, MAYBE WE JUST
HAVE TO SQUEEZE HARDER.
[Grunting]
Ari squeezes snow together.
He says, COME ON, SNOWBALL!
LET ME MAKE YOU!
Olive asks, IS IT WORKING?
[Grunting, upbeat music plays]
Ari says, I THINK SO?
Ari’s snowball falls apart.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, MAYBE THIS
SNOW JUST ISN'T GOOD FOR
MAKING SNOWBALLS.
Olive says, I WONDER IF IT'S
GOOD FOR SNOW CASTLES.
Olive gathers snow in her green bucket.
[Rustling]
Ari says, WAIT, I HAVE AN IDEA.
HAND ME THE BUCKET, PLEASE.
Ari flies up to the top of the two large snowballs.
[Flapping]
Ari turns over the bucket and the snow falls apart.
He explains, I THOUGHT WE COULD
MAKE A SNOW CASTLE HEAD,
BUT NO, I GUESS NOT.
Olive says, HMM, MAYBE IF I PACK
THE SNOW DOWN A LITTLE MORE.
HAND ME THE BUCKET, PLEASE, ARI.
[Rustling]
Olive’s mother says, HEY, KIDS, WHO
IS READY FOR SOME HOT CHOCOLATE?
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari gasps, HOT CHOCOLATE?!
Olive says, COMING, MOM!
Olive and Ari run into a house. Elinor pauses and looks at the snowballs. She turns and follows Ari into the house and Olive shuts a door behind her.
[Rustling, door creaks, slams]
Elinor says, UH, OLIVE, YOU STILL
HAVE THE BUCKET OF SNOW.
Olive says, YEAH, I BROUGHT IT
IN SO WE CAN KEEP OBSERVING IT.
Elinor says, GOOD THINKING.
HEY, LITTLE BUCKET OF SNOW.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE
OLIVE'S HOUSE?
Ari says, I WONDER IF BUCKETS
OF SNOW LIKE HOT CHOCOLATE.
[Giggling]
Olive’s mother opens a wood stove as Elinor, Ari, and Olive sit on a sofa wrapped in blankets as they sip their hot chocolate from mugs.
Elinor says, WELL, THIS IS COZY.
Olive says, THANKS, MOM.
[Gentle music plays]
Olive’s mother says, YOU'RE
WELCOME, KIDS.
[Olive’s mother shivers]
She says, IT IS REALLY COLD
OUT THERE!
Elinor says, I WONDER WHY THE
SNOW OUTSIDE DIDN'T STICK
TOGETHER TODAY.
Ari says, I DON'T KNOW, WHAT DO YOU
SAY, BUCKET OF SNOW?
IT DOESN'T SAY MUCH.
Olive says, WELL, I'M GLAD WE'RE
INSIDE WHERE IT'S NICE AND TOASTY.
RIGHT, BUCKET OF SNOW?
UH-OH, SOMETHING IS HAPPENING
TO THE SNOW. LOOK.
[Sloshing]
Elinor says, IT DOES LOOK DIFFERENT.
Ari says, YEAH, IT LOOKS WATERY.
[Splash]
Elinor declares, THAT'S SO INTERESTING!
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS.
Olive says, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.
Olive puts the bucket on the floor.
[Thump, splash]
Elinor says, IT FEELS DIFFERENT,
TOO. IT'S WET AND SLUSHY.
Olive says, IT'S MORE LIKE THE
SNOW FROM YESTERDAY.
WAIT A MINUTE.
Olive makes a snowball.
[Rustling]
Elinor exclaims, IT WORKS! YOU
CAN MAKE A SNOWBALL NOW!
Olive says, YEAH, THIS SNOW STICKS
TOGETHER AND DOESN'T CRUMBLE.
[Giggling]
Olive throws the snowball up in the air. Ari tries to catch it but it slips out of his hands.
Ari says, WHOA, WHOA, WHOA!
FINALLY! A SNOWBALL!
Olive says, BUT WHY DID THE SNOW
CHANGE? IT USED TO BE FLUFFY,
BUT NOW IT'S SLUSHY.
Ari says, ALL WE DID WAS BRING
IT INTO THE HOUSE.
Elinor says, HMM. WAIT A MINUTE,
IT'S MUCH WARMER INSIDE THE
HOUSE. MAYBE THAT FLUFFY SNOW
TURNS SLUSHY AND STICKY WHEN
IT WARMS UP.
Olive’s mother says, YOU'RE RIGHT,
ELINOR. THAT'S BECAUSE SNOW
MELTS WHEN IT GETS WARM.
Elinor says, THAT'S WHAT MAKES
IT SLUSHY!
Elinor says, AND STICKY SO WE
CAN MAKE THINGS WITH IT.
Ari adds, LIKE SNOWBALLS!
Olive’s mother says, NICE OBSERVING,
SCIENTISTS. NOW PLEASE BE CAREFUL
NOT TO GET SLUSHY SNOW ON
THE COUCH.
Ari says, OH, RIGHT.
Ari drops the snowball into the bucket.
[Squelch]
Olive’s mother opens the wood stove and puts another log on a fire.
[Creak]
She says, BRR!
Olive says, HMM.
[Creak]
Olive says, WAIT, I THINK I KNOW
WHY THE SNOW IS DIFFERENT
TODAY THAN YESTERDAY. IT'S
A LOT COLDER OUTSIDE TODAY.
In a thought bubble above her head, Elinor remembers making snowballs.
[Happy music plays, popping, whooshing]
Elinor says, HMM, YEAH. YESTERDAY
WAS WARMER, SO THE SNOW WAS
SLUSHIER AND STICKIER.
In a thought bubble above her head, Olive remembers her snowball falling apart.
[Popping, rustling]
Olive says, BUT TODAY, IT'S COLDER,
SO THE SNOW STAYS FLUFFY AND
CRUMBLY. THAT'S IT!
Ari says, WE FIGURED OUT THE
SNOW MYSTERY! YES!
Elinor, Ari, and Olive high five.
[Hands slap]
Elinor says, THAT EXPLAINS WHY
THE SNOW IS DIFFERENT, BUT
HOW ARE WE GOING TO FINISH
OUR SNOW GIANT?
Olive says, THE SNOW OUTSIDE
WON'T STICK TOGETHER, IT'S
TOO COLD.
Ari says, WE NEED TO WARM UP
THE SNOW OUTSIDE. BUT HOW?
WHAT DO YOU THINK, BUCKET
OF SNOW? ANY IDEAS?
Elinor says, HMM.
[Gasp, music notes play]
She says, I'VE GOT IT! IF WE CAN'T
WARM UP THE SNOW OUTSIDE,
WE'LL WARM IT UP IN HERE.
Olive says, WE CAN BRING THE
SNOW INSIDE TO WARM IT UP.
Ari says, AND THEN TAKE IT
OUTSIDE TO BUILD.
SNOW GIANT, GET READY FOR
YOUR HEAD!
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive says, PERFECT.
Ari picks up a bucket full of snow and carries it to Elinor inside the house.
[Flapping]
Elinor sings, YESTERDAY WAS
WARM AND THE SNOW COULD
REALLY STICK.
Olive takes the fresh snow and gives Elinor a bucket of slushy snow.
Olive sings, TODAY IT IS COLDER,
AND IT DOESN'T STICK A BIT.
WE'LL BRING THE SNOW INSIDE
WHERE IT'S NICE AND TOASTY.
Elinor sings, THEN WE'LL WAIT
FOR IT TO MELT A BIT AND TAKE
IT OUT AGAIN.
Ari, Elinor, and Olive sing, WARM UP
THE SNOW, WARM UP THE SNOW.
MAKE THE SNOW STICKY
AND WE'RE GOOD TO GO.
WHEN THE SNOW IS COLD,
ITS FLUFFY, WHEN IT'S WARM
IT'S SLUSHY.
WE CAN BUILD ANYTHING WHEN
WE WARM UP THE SNOW.
Elinor sings, OUR SNOW FRIEND
ISN'T FINISHED, WE HAVE TO
MAKE ITS HEAD.
Olive sings, SO IF WE CAN'T USE COLD,
COLD SNOW, WELL WARM IT UP AGAIN.
Ari sings, WHEN THE SNOW GETS
WET, WE'LL PUT IT ON OUR FRIEND.
Elinor sings, WE'LL MAKE A GOOD
SNOWBALL AND USE IT FOR ITS HEAD.
[Rustling]
Ari, Elinor, and Olive sing, WARM
UP THE SNOW, HEY, WARM UP
THE SNOW, HEY.
WE CAN BUILD ANYTHING WHEN
WE WARM UP THE SNOW.
[Bird chirps]
Ari, Elinor, and Olive admire the finished snow giant.
Elinor exclaims, WOW!
Olive says, NOW THAT'S WHAT
I CALL A GIANT SNOW GIANT.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, WE FIGURED OUT HOW
TO MAKE A GIANT HEAD BY WARMING
UP THE SNOW.
Ari says, NOW HE'S SO BIG HE COULD
CRUSH CARS AND HOUSES AND
MOUNTAINS. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
BOOM, BOOM!
Elinor says, UH, ARI, OUR SNOW
GIANT WOULD NEVER DO THAT.
Ari asks, WHY NOT?
Olive says, HE'S FRIENDLY.
Olive looks up at the snow giant.
She asks, UH, A LITTLE HELP?
Elinor and Ari boost Olive up to the head of the snow giant. Olive puts snow eyes on the top snowball and uses her finger to make a smile in the snowball.
[Olive hums, scrape, happy music plays]
Ari says, OH, OKAY, THAT
WORKS TOO.
Ari flies up to the head of the snow giant and drops the bucket on it. The bucket lands upside down, resembling a hat.
[Happy music plays]
Aris asks, HOW'S IT GOING, GIANT,
FRIENDLY SNOW FRIEND?
AWW, I THINK HE REALLY LIKES ME.
[Giggling]
[Upbeat music plays]
