Elinor, a white rabbit with long straight dark brown hair, wears a red and purple dress. She runs on a dirt path and stops to look at a monarch butterfly perched on a grey rock.

[Happy music plays]

Elinor sings, WHEREVER I GO
I SEE THINGS THAT I WANT
TO KNOW,

WHEREVER I AM I FIND THINGS
I WANT TO UNDERSTAND.

GO AND EXPLORE, LISTEN AND SEE
JUST FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.

Elinor smiles as she sings on a swing on a swing set. Olive Elephant swings on a swing beside her. Olive wears a blue bow on her head, with a blue shirt, skirts and leggings. Ari Bat hands upside down from the bar on the top of the swing set.

Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.

Elinor sings, WHY DO BIRDS SING?
AND HOW DO THEY FLY?

Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.

Elinor watches ants through a magnifying glass.

Elinor sings WHY DO ANTS MARCH?
AND WHERE DO THEY HIDE?

THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
WHEREVER YOU TURN
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
AND FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.

[Chiming]

Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.

Elinor sings, ASK A QUESTION
WHAT WILL YOU FIND?

Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.

Elinor sings, JUST LISTEN AND SEE
COME AND WONDER WITH ME.

Text above Elinor reads, “Elinor Wonders Why.” A magnifying glass with pink bunny ears replaces the letter ‘O’ in Elinor’s name. Text reads, “Bubble House.”

Elinor says, BUBBLE HOUSE.

[Birds chirp, upbeat music plays]

Elinor hops to a rock. Olive kneels beside a pile of leaves on a path. Ari backs towards her as he drags a branch. Olive divides the pile of leaves, putting a line of leaves on each side of the path.

[Rustling]

Olive says, OH, OH! CAREFUL,
ARI. YOU ALMOST JABBED YOUR
BRANCH THROUGH THE WALL
OF MY LEAF HOUSE.

Ari says, WHOOPS.
SORRY ABOUT THAT, OLIVE.
I NEED IT FOR MY STICK HOUSE.
I'LL JUST GET IT OUT OF--

[Grunts]

Olive suggests, YOU COULD JUST
USE THE FRONT DOOR.

[Birds tweet]

Ari says, OH. GOOD IDEA.
KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK.

Olive asks, WHO IS IT?

Ari says, ARI.

Olive asks, ARI WHO?

Ari says, ARI SURE IT'S ME?
OPEN THE DOOR AND SEE.

[Laughing]

Olive says, GOOD ONE.

[Olive imitates a creaking door]

Olive says, OH, HI, ARI.
HOW NICE TO SEE YOU.

Ari says, NICE TO SEE YOU, TOO,
OLIVE. WOULD YOU MIND IF I
DRAGGED MY BRANCH THROUGH
YOUR LEAF HOUSE?

Olive says, NOT AT ALL.
LET ME OPEN THE BACK
DOOR FOR YOU.

[Imitates door creaking, upbeat music plays]

Ari says, LOVE WHAT YOU'VE
DONE WITH THE PLACE.

[Rustling]

Olive says, THANKS.
STOP BY ANYTIME.

Ari says, MY STICK HOUSE IS
GOING TO BE AWESOME. HAVE
YOU FIGURED OUT WHAT YOU'RE
GOING TO MAKE YOUR HOUSE
WITH, ELINOR?

Elinor replies, NO. I'M STILL NOT
SURE. I'LL JUST HAVE TO
KEEP EXPLORING.

Elinor chases a butterfly.

[Giggles]

Elinor says, HUH? WAIT.
WHAT'S THIS?

[Rustling]

Ari asks, WHAT DID YOU FIND?

[Pop]

Elinor points and says, LOOK. BUBBLES.

Olive says, OOH.

HOW DID BUBBLES GET ON
THE TREE?

Ari suggests, MAYBE THE PLANT
IS WASHING ITS HANDS?

Elinor says, OR MAYBE IT'S TAKING
A BUBBLE BATH.

The plant sways.

[Rustling, gasping, bugs chirp]

Ari asks, DID THOSE BUBBLES
JUST WIGGLE?

[Bubbles pop]

Olive asks, HOW CAN BUBBLES
MOVE ON THEIR OWN?

THEY AREN'T ALIVE, ARE THEY?

Elinor says, HMM. WE NEED
MORE OBSERVATIONS.

Olive uses her trunk to lift a purple magnifying glass out of her handbag.

[Musical flourish]

Olive sings, DUN-DUN-DUN.

Elinor says, YES. LET'S USE
A MAGNIFYING GLASS.

[Gasp, birds chirp]

Olive says, A BUG!
IT WAS INSIDE THE BUBBLE.
THAT'S WHAT MADE THEM MOVE.

Elinor says, THAT IS SO
INTERESTING. UH-OH.

THE BUG HAS GONE BACK
IN HIS BUBBLES. BYE-BYE, BUG.

[Rustling]

Mrs. Rabbit, Elinor’s mother, calls, HEY, KIDS.
WHO'S READY FOR SOME SNACKS?

Olive says, OH, YEAH!

Elinor says, YEAH, YEAH.

Ari cheers, WOO!

All three cheer, YAY!

[Upbeat music plays]

Mrs. Rabbit wears a brown wide-brimmed hat and a brown ranger uniform. She puts a plate on a picnic table.

Elinor says, MOM, MOM.
YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHAT
WE FOUND.

Mrs. Rabbit says, SOMETHING
EXCITING, I CAN TELL.

Elinor says, THERE WERE THESE
BUBBLES ON A PLANT, AND THEN
WE SAW A BUG INSIDE
THE BUBBLES.

Her mother says, I SEE.

Ari slurps his drink through his straw.

[Bubbling]

Ari says, MMM! SLURPY.

Mrs. Rabbit says, SOUNDS
LIKE YOU FOUND A
SPITTLEBUG, ELINOR.

Elinor says, A SPITTLEBUG?

Mrs. Rabbit says, IT'S A BUG
THAT MAKES ITSELF A LITTLE
HOUSE OF BUBBLES AND
HIDES INSIDE.

[Tentative notes play]

Elinor says, YES. WE SAW THE
SPITTLEBUG HIDING. I WONDER
WHY IT DOES THAT.

Ari suggests, MAYBE IT LIKES TO
EAT THE BUBBLES.

[Munching]

Olive says, MAYBE IT'S PLAYING
HIDE-AND-GO-SEEK.

[Upbeat music plays]

Mrs. Rabbit says, CLOSE, OLIVE.
THE SPITTLEBUG MAKES ITS BUBBLE
HOUSE TO HIDE FROM CREATURES
LIKE BIRDS THAT MIGHT WANT TO
EAT IT.

[Gasping]

Elinor says, NO!

Mrs. Rabbit says, ANIMALS
USE ALL KINDS OF WAYS TO STAY
SAFE IN NATURE.

Olive says, says, HUH.

Ari says, WOW.

Mrs. Rabbit says, WELL,
ENJOY YOUR SNACKS.

[Rustling, birds tweet, happy music plays]

Elinor says, THANKS, MOM.
WOW. A BUBBLE HOUSE. HUH.

I JUST HAD A BUBBLY IDEA.
I'M GOING TO MAKE MY HOUSE
OUT OF BUBBLES!

JUST LIKE THE SPITTLEBUG.

Olive says, AWESOME.

Ari says, COOL. A BUBBLE
HOUSE. I WANT ONE, TOO.

Olive says, YEAH. ME, TOO.
UH, BUT HOW DO WE MAKE
A BUBBLE HOUSE?

Elinor says, HMM. I'M NOT SURE.
BUT LET'S GO GET MY BUBBLE STUFF
AND SEE IF WE CAN FIGURE IT OUT.

Elinor and Olive carry their snacks into a house as Ari watches.

[Upbeat music plays, door closes, munching]

Elinor says, OKAY.
HERE WE GO.

Ari eats a sandwich.

Ari says, MMM. MMM. YUM.

[Slurping]

Elinor carries a pail and bubble wands to the picnic table.

Elinor says, OKAY.
FIRST, WE POUR LIQUID SOAP
INTO THIS WATER...

[Splashing]

She says, ...AND WE MIX IT UP.

NOW, WE PULL OUT THE BUBBLE
WAND AND BLOW.

[Blowing, soft music plays]

Ari says, COOL.

Olive asks, CAN I TRY?

Elinor says, SURE.

[Water sloshes, blowing, pop]

Olive blows a bubble and it pops on the wand.

Olive says, OH.

Elinor suggests, TRY BLOWING
A LITTLE MORE GENTLY.

[Water sloshes, blowing]

Ari says, THAT'S AN AWESOME
BUBBLE, OLIVE.

Olive says, THANKS, ARI.
YOUR TURN.

[Sloshing, blowing, pop]

Ari says, I DID IT!
I MADE A BUBBLE.

Elinor asks, BUT HOW DO
WE MAKE A WHOLE HOUSE
OF BUBBLES?

Olive says, HMM.

Ari says, YEAH.

Elinor says, WELL, ONE THING
WE NEED FOR SURE IS
MORE BUBBLES.

Elinor, Olive, and Ari dip bubble wands into the soap mixture and blow bubbles.

[Water sloshing, blowing]

[Upbeat music plays, popping]

Elinor, Olive, and Ari sing,
BUBBLE-BUBBLE-BUBBLE,
WE'RE GOING TO
BLOW SOME BUBBLES.

Elinor sings, TO BUILD A BUBBLE HOUSE.

Olive sings, LIKE A SPITTLEBUG'S.

Ari sings, AND THEN WE'LL GET INSIDE.

[Pop]

Elinor says, LET'S TRY BLOWING
LOTS OF LITTLE BUBBLES, AND
THEN PUT THEM TOGETHER TO MAKE
THE HOUSE.

Elinor, Olive, and Ari sing,
BUBBLE-BUBBLE-BUBBLE
WE'LL BLOW LOTS OF BABY BUBBLES.

[Popping]

Elinor sings, A WHOLE PILE OF BUBBLES.

Ari sings, AND TRY TO GET INSIDE.

[Popping]

Elinor says, THAT DIDN'T WORK.

Olive says, LET'S TRY AGAIN.

Ari suggests, LET'S MAKE ONE
BIG BUBBLE THIS TIME.

[Upbeat music continues playing]

Elinor, Olive, and Ari sing,
BUBBLE-BUBBLE-BUBBLE,
LET'S BLOW
A BIG, BIG BUBBLE.

Ari sings, A HUMONGOUS BUBBLE.

Elinor sings, AND TRY TO GET INSIDE.

[Pop]

Elinor says, THAT DIDN'T
WORK, EITHER.

Ari asks, NOW, WHAT DO WE DO?

[Bubbling]

Elinor, Olive, and Ari sing,
BUBBLE-BUBBLE-BUBBLE
WE BLEW LOTS OF BUBBLES

BUT WE COULDN'T BUILD
A HOUSE LIKE THE SPITTLEBUG
DOES. TO GET INSIDE.

[Popping, giggling, birds chirp]

Mrs. Rabbit asks, HOW'S
THE BUBBLE-BUILDING GOING?

Ari says, WELL, THE GOOD NEWS
IS WE BLEW A TON OF BUBBLES.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD NEWS IS WE
COULDN'T BUILD A BUBBLE HOUSE.

[Sighs]

Elinor explains, FIRST, WE BLEW
A LOT OF LITTLE BUBBLES.

BUT WE COULDN'T GET THEM
TO STICK TOGETHER.

Olive says, THEN, WE BLEW A REALLY
ENORMOUS BUBBLE, BUT IT POPPED
WHEN WE TRIED TO GET INSIDE.

[Elinor sighs, sad music plays]

Elinor says, I GUESS WE'LL NEVER
MAKE A BUBBLE HOUSE, AND I
REALLY WANTED ONE.

Olive says, ME, TOO.

Ari says, ME THREE.

[Children sigh, birds chirp]

Mrs. Rabbit says, HMM. SO, YOU
WANTED TO MAKE A BUBBLE
HOUSE JUST LIKE THE SPITTLEBUG
DID, AND YOU TRIED TO MAKE IT
USING YOUR BUBBLE WANDS?

Olive says, YEP, BUT THAT DIDN'T WORK.

Mrs. Rabbit says, WELL, DID YOU
OBSERVE HOW THE SPITTLEBUG
MAKES ITS BUBBLE HOUSE?

Ari asks, WHAT DO YOU MEAN,
MRS. RABBIT?

Mrs. Rabbit says, SOMETIMES,
TO LEARN FROM NATURE, IT'S
IMPORTANT TO OBSERVE HOW
AN ANIMAL DOES SOMETHING,
NOT JUST WHAT THEY DO.

Elinor says, I NEVER THOUGHT
ABOUT IT THAT WAY BEFORE.

WE SAW THE BUBBLE HOUSE
THAT THE SPITTLEBUG MADE,
BUT WE NEVER SAW THE
SPITTLEBUG MAKING THE
BUBBLE HOUSE.

WE NEED EVEN MORE OBSERVATIONS.

[Upbeat music plays]

Elinor says, COME ON. LET'S GO.

Ari, Olive, and Elinor run to the plant with the bubbles.

[Rustling, insects chirp]

Elinor says, THERE'S THE
BUBBLE HOUSE.

Ari asks, BUT WHERE'S
THE SPITTLEBUG?

Olive says, IT'S PROBABLY INSIDE.

Elinor whispers, LET'S BE
REALLY, REALLY QUIET AND
WATCH CLOSELY.

Ari whispers, RIGHT. WE DON'T
WANT TO SCARE--

[He gasps]

Ari points and shouts, THERE HE IS!

Olive and Elinor say, SHH.

Ari whispers, WHOOPS. SORRY.

Olive whispers, LET'S SEE WHAT IT
DOES. LOOK.

[Pop]

Olive whispers, HE'S MAKING
BUBBLES FOR HIS BUBBLE HOUSE.

Ari asks, BUT HOW? HE DOESN'T
HAVE A BUBBLE WAND OR ANYTHING.

[Plooping]

Elinor says, OH. THE SPITTLEBUG
DOESN'T BLOW BUBBLES INTO
THE AIR AND THEN STICK THEM
TOGETHER. IT BLOWS RIGHT INTO
THE GOOPY LIQUID TO MAKE
THE BUBBLES.

Ari says, WHOA. FOAMY.

Olive says, THAT MAKES LOTS
OF REALLY TINY BUBBLES
ALREADY STUCK TOGETHER.
AND THEY DON'T ALL POP
WHEN HE CRAWLS INSIDE.

Elinor says, THAT'S IT! THAT'S
WHAT WE SHOULD DO. COME ON.

[Upbeat music plays, rustling]

Mrs. Rabbit stands by the picnic table as Elinor, Ari, and Olive run to her.

Elinor calls, MOM!

Mrs. Rabbit says, OH, HI,
ELINOR. WELL, WHAT DID
YOU LEARN?

Elinor says, THE SPITTLEBUG
MAKES LOTS AND LOTS OF
REALLY TINY BUBBLES.

Ari says, BUT IT DOESN'T USE
A BUBBLE WAND.

Olive says, IT BLOWS RIGHT
INTO ITS BUBBLE STUFF.

Mrs. Rabbit says, HUH.
THAT IS SO INTERESTING.

Elinor says, YEAH, BUT HOW
ARE WE GOING TO BLOW AIR
INTO OUR BUBBLE STUFF?

Olive says, GOOD QUESTION. HMM.

Mrs. Rabbit says, IT SOUNDS
LIKE YOU'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK,
KIDS. I'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

Ari says, ALL THIS TALKING ABOUT
BUBBLES HAS MADE ME THIRSTY.

[Slurping, sigh]

Ari says, AHH. HITS THE SPOT.

[Laughing]

Elinor says, ARI, YOU JUST GAVE
ME AN IDEA.

Elinor picks up the pail and skips between Ari and Olive. She puts the pail on the picnic table.

[Happy music plays, thump]

Ari says, WAIT, ELINOR!
DON'T DRINK THE BUBBLE
STUFF. IT'S SOAP. YUCK.

[Elinor inhales]

Elinor uses a straw to blow bubbles in the soapy water.

[Bubbles gurgle]

Olive says, I DON'T THINK SHE'S
TRYING TO DRINK THE BUBBLE
STUFF, ARI.

SHE'S USING THE STRAW TO BLOW
AIR INTO THE BUBBLE STUFF, JUST
LIKE THE SPITTLEBUG DID.

IT'S WORKING.

Ari says, LET'S HELP.

Ari and Olive put straws in the pail.

[Inhaling, bubbles gurgle]

Bubbles flow over the top of the pail and spreads across the picnic table.

Olive says, WOW. LOOK AT
THOSE BUBBLES. WE CAN
DEFINITELY MAKE A BUBBLE
HOUSE LIKE THAT. KEEP GOING.

[Bubbles gurgle, gentle music plays]

Bubbles pile high on top of the picnic table.

Ari says, WOW. BUBBLE-O-RAMA!
NOW, THAT'S WHAT I CALL A BUBBLE
HOUSE.

Olive says, TRY TO GET INSIDE, ELINOR.

Elinor climbs into the centre of the pile of bubbles and peeks out.

[Gasp]

Elinor says, WE DID IT!

Mrs. Rabbit says, WOW.
THAT'S SOME IMPRESSIVE
BUBBLE-BUILDING.

BUT WHERE'S ELINOR?

[Ari giggles]

Elinor says, HERE I AM.

[Mrs. Rabbit chuckles, gentle musical notes play]

She says, I DIDN'T SEE YOU AT FIRST.
HOW DID YOU MAKE SUCH A GREAT
BUBBLE HOUSE?

Elinor says, WE BLEW AIR INTO
THE BUBBLE STUFF, JUST LIKE
THE SPITTLEBUG DID.

Olive explains, AND THAT MADE
A WHOLE BUNCH OF SMALL BUBBLES
STUCK TOGETHER.

Ari says, IT'S LIKE YOU SAID,
MRS. RABBIT.

WE LOOKED CLOSELY TO LEARN HOW
THE BUG DOES IT IN NATURE, AND
THAT'S HOW WE GOT THE IDEA.

Mrs. Rabbit says, WELL, NICE
WORK, SCIENTISTS.

Elinor says, THANKS, MOM.
WHO WANTS TO COME IN OUR
BUBBLE HOUSE WITH ME?

Ari says, DON'T MIND IF I DO.

Olive asks, BUT WHERE'S THE DOOR?

Elinor says, OOPS. WAIT A SECOND.
TA-DA!

[Olive giggles]

Ari says, OH, THERE IT IS.

Olive says, I DON'T KNOW WHY
WE DIDN'T SEE IT BEFORE.

[Giggling, bubbles popping]

Elinor says, I'M A LITTLE SPITTLEBUG,
HANGING OUT IN MY BUBBLE HOUSE.

[Olive trumpets]

Elinor says, PEEK-A-BUBBLE.

Mrs. Rabbit says, AW, LOOK.
THREE CUTE SPITTLEBUGS.

[Laughing, happy music plays, popping]

Ms. Mole stands beside a tree trunk as children sit in front of the trunk on a fallen log and on the grass.

Ms. Mole says, WELCOME TO
OUTSIDE STORY TIME.

[Cheering]

Ms. Mole asks, DID YOU ALL
BRING SNACKS?

[Rustling]

Olive says, YEP.

Ms. Mole says, ALL RIGHT,
EVERYONE. LET'S GET STARTED.

ALL ANIMALS LIVING ON LAND
NEED AIR TO BREATHE.

THAT'S TRUE FOR YOU, ME,
AND THIS BEETLE HERE.

BUT THIS LITTLE BEETLE LOVES
TO EXPLORE UNDERWATER.

Ms. Mole opens a pop-up book. A paper beetle swims down in an illustration in the book.

[Munching]

Elinor asks, WHY DOES THE
BEETLE GO UNDERWATER,
MS. MOLE?

[Insects chirp, gentle musical notes play]

Ms. Mole says, THAT'S WHERE
THE BEETLE FINDS FOOD.

Elinor says, THERE SURE IS A
LOT TO EXPLORE DOWN THERE.

Olive says, OH, LOOK.
WHY DID HE COME BACK UP?

Ms. Mole explains, HE NEEDS TO
BREATHE AIR.

[Inhale, exhale]

Ms. Mole says, JUST LIKE WE DO.

Elinor asks, BUT HOW WILL HE
FIND HIS FODD?

Ms. Mole says, SOME SPECIAL
BEETLES HAVE FIGURED OUT
A WAY TO BRING AIR DOWN
WITH THEM.

THEY MAKE A BUBBLE.

Ari asks, CAN THEY BREATHE
AIR IN THE BUBBLE?

Ms. Mole says, WHY, YES, HE CAN.

Elinor says, THAT IS SO INTERESTING.
NOW HE CAN STAY UNDERWATER
LONGER AND FIND FOOD.

[Upbeat music plays softly]

Ms. Mole says, YES.
THESE BEETLES CAN STAY
UNDERWATER A VERY LONG
TIME, EXPLORING FOR FOOD
AND HAVING FUN.

IT'S A PRETTY SMART TRICK
TO TAKE WHAT YOU NEED WITH
YOU. THE BEETLE TOOK ITS AIR
BUBBLE, AND WE TOOK A SNACK.

[Munching]

Elinor asks, MS. MOLE, DON'T
YOU WANT SOME POPCORN?

Ms. Mole says, WELL, I DID
BRING SOME!

[Rustling]

Ms. Mole opens her cardigan and popcorn falls on the grass in front of her. Ari dives into the pile of popcorn.

[Rustling]

Ari says, YEAH!

[Laughing]

Blue text by a red barn reads, “The Syrup Tree.” Elinor wears a red scarf and mittens with her dress. Olive wears a blue coat with fluffy white trim and Ari wears a purple touque and mittens. The walk past patches of snow and ice on yellow grass.

Elinor says, THE SYRUP TREE.

[Laughing]

Ari says, AWESOME!
PANCAKE DAY IS FINALLY HERE.

Olive says, YEAH, ARI. I LOVE
IT. MS. LLAMA MAKES THE
BEST PANCAKES.

Elinor says, MMM. I CAN'T WAIT
TO EAT A BIG STACK OF THEM.

In a thought bubble above her head, Elinor imagines a stack of pancakes up to her shoulders. Text reads, “Directed by Kevin Micallef.”

[Popping]

She says, I'M GOING TO EAT
THIS MANY PANCAKES.

Olive imagines a stack of pancakes taller than she is. Text reads, “Written by Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson.”

[Upbeat music plays]

Olive says, OH, YEAH?
WELL, I'M GOING TO EAT
EVEN MORE.

Ari imagines flying beside a giant stack of pancakes.

[Whooshing, wobbling]

Ari says, WELL, OLIVE, I'M
GOING TO EAT THE BIGGEST
STACK EVER. HUH?

[Laughing]

Elinor says, IT'S GREAT THAT
EVERYONE'S HELPING OUT FOR
PANCAKE DAY.

Mrs. Rabbit puts plates on a table.

[Clink]

Ari says, THERE'S SALLY BEAVER
AND HER MOM, MAKING TABLES
AND CHAIRS FOR EVERYONE.

Sally and her mom chew a log into a picnic table.

[Chomping]

Elinor says, THEY ARE SO GOOD
AT THAT. IT'S AMAZING.

Olive says, LET'S GO ASK FARMER
BEAR WHEN IT'LL BE TIME TO EAT
SOME PANCAKES.

[Upbeat music plays]

Ari and Elinor cheer, YEAH!
LET'S GO.

Elinor shouts, FARMER BEAR?

Ari asks, WHERE IS FARMER BEAR?

Elinor says, I DON'T KNOW.
LET'S GO ASK MY MOM.

Elinor runs to her mother, Mrs. Rabbit. Her mother wears a brown wide-brimmed hat with a badge on it and a brown uniform. She wears a green scarf.

Elinor says, HI, MOM.

Mrs. Rabbit says, OH, HI, ELINOR.

Elinor asks, HAVE YOU SEEN
FARMER BEAR?

Mrs. Rabbit says, FARMER BEAR?
SHE'S PROBABLY MAKING THE
SYRUP FOR THE PANCAKES.

Olive repeats, SHE'S MAKING
THE SYRUP?

Ari says, WHOA. YOU CAN MAKE
SYRUP? I THOUGHT YOU JUST GOT
IT AT THE STORE.

[Laughing]

Mrs. Rabbit says, WELL, SOMEBODY
HAS TO MAKE THE SYRUP, ARI.

SYRUP COMES FROM MAPLE TREES.
FARMER BEAR HAS A GROVE OF
THEM RIGHT OVER THERE.

Olive says, HUH. I NEVER THOUGHT
ABOUT WHERE SYRUP COMES FROM.

IT COMES FROM TREES?
THAT IS SO INTERESTING.

Ari says, LET'S GO CHECK OUT
THE SYRUP TREES.

Olive says, MAYBE WE'LL FIND
FARMER BEAR THERE.

Elinor says, YEAH. WE NEED
MORE OBSERVATIONS.

[Upbeat music plays, birds chirp]

Olive says, I DON'T SEE FARMER BEAR
ANYWHERE.

A bucket hangs on a tree.

Elinor says, MY MOM SAID THAT
SYRUP COMES FROM THESE TREES.
BUT HOW DOES THAT WORK?

Olive says, GOOD QUESTION.

MAYBE THE SYRUP COMES FROM
A FRUIT ON THE TREE.

Ari says, YEAH. LIKE AN APPLE
OR AN ORANGE.

Elinor says, MAYBE, BUT I DON'T
SEE ANY FRUIT ON THESE TREES.

MAYBE THEY MAKE THE SYRUP
FROM THE LEAVES OF THE TREE?

Olive says, MMM, BUT IT'S WINTER,
AND NONE OF THE TREES HAVE
ANY LEAVES.

Ari suggests, MAYBE THE SYRUP IS
ON THE TREE. THERE'S ONLY ONE
WAY TO FIND OUT.

Ari licks the tree trunk beside where the bucket hangs.

[Slurping]

Olive shouts, ARI.

Ari says, UH--

[Smacks lips]

Ari says, NOPE. THE TREE
DOESN'T TASTE LIKE SYRUP.

Elinor says, ARI--

[Olive and Elinor laughs]

[Ari smacks his lips]

Ari says, HMM. NOW MY MOUTH
TASTES LIKE TREE BARK. UGH.

Olive asks, DO YOU WANT TO GO
BACK AND GET SOME WATER?

Ari says, NOPE.
I HAVE JUST THE THING: AN
EMERGENCY JUICE BOX.

[Slurps]

Ari says, AH. THAT'S BETTER.

Olive says, ARI, YOU'RE ALWAYS
SO PREPARED.

[Ari laughs]

Elinor asks, SO, WHERE DOES THE
SYRUP COME FROM?

[Whistling]

Elinor turns and waves.

Elinor says, HI, FARMER BEAR.

Farmer Bear wears a grey overalls over a purple shirt and dark purple scarf. She wears a straw hat.

Farmer Bear says, OH, HELLO, KIDS.

Olive says, WE WERE LOOKING
FOR YOU.

Farmer Bear says, OH?
HOW COME?

Olive says, WE HEARD YOU
WERE MAKING SYRUP, AND WE
WANTED TO SEE HOW YOU DID IT.

Ari adds, ALSO, DO YOU NEED
HELP TASTING IT? I'M AN EXPERT
SYRUP-TASTER. AH.

[Slurping]

Farmer Bear says, WELL, FIRST WE
HAVE TO MAKE THE SYRUP, ARI, AND
THAT'S WHY I'M HERE IN THIS
TREE GROVE.

Elinor says, MY MOM SAID THAT
SYRUP COMES FROM THESE TREES,
BUT WE CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW.

WE DON'T SEE ANY FRUITS
OR LEAVES.

Olive says, AND THE TREES DON'T
TASTE LIKE SYRUP. ARI TRIED IT.

Ari says, YUCK. IT DOESN'T TASTE
LIKE SYRUP AT ALL.

[Farmer Bear laughs]

Farmer Bear says, WELL, THAT'S
BECAUSE THE SYRUP DOESN'T
COME FROM ANYTHING ON
THE TREES.

IT COMES FROM WHAT'S INSIDE
THE TREES.

The children say, OH.

Farmer Bear says, COME WITH
ME. I'LL SHOW YOU.

Sap drips into a bucket.

[Drips plop]

Ari asks, WHAT'S THAT WATERY
STUFF COMING OUT OF THE TREES?

Olive says, I DIDN'T KNOW TREES
HAD JUICE INSIDE.

Farmer Bear says, THAT LIQUID IS
CALLED TREE SAP. WE USE THE TREE
SAP FROM THESE TREES TO MAKE
MAPLE SYRUP.

Elinor says, COOL.

Farmer Bear says, WATCH.

Farmer Bear taps a spigot into a tree trunk beneath a nail. She hangs a bucket on the nail and sap drips out of the spigot.

[Tapping, clank, dripping, upbeat music plays]

Elinor says, WOW. SO, THAT
LIQUID IS INSIDE THE TREE
ALL THE TIME?

Ari says, JUST LIKE THE JUICE
IN MY JUICE BOX.

[Ari slurps his drink]

Ari says, AH.

Farmer Bear says, BUT TREE SAP
IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM
THOSE JUICES, BECAUSE IT COMES
FROM INSIDE THE TREE, NOT FROM
ANY FRUIT LIKE ORANGES, APPLES
OR GRAPES.

Olive asks, DOES THAT HURT
THE TREE?

[Dripping]

Farmer Bear says, NOT IF YOU
MAKE JUST A LITTLE HOLE.

Elinor asks, FARMER BEAR,
WHY DO TREES HAVE TREE
SAP INSIDE?

Farmer Bear says, GOOD QUESTION,
ELINOR. TREES USE TREE SAP TO
SPREAD WATER AND SUGAR INSIDE
THE PLANT.

IT'S HOW THE TREE GETS WHAT
IT NEEDS TO STAY HEALTHY.

HERE. I THINK I HAVE A PICTURE
IN MY TREE BOOK.

Farmer Bear kneels on snow as she shows Elinor, Ari, and Olive a page in a book.

Farmer Bear says, SEE? THE TREE
SAP SPREADS TO ALL THE DIFFERENT
PARTS OF THE TREE. IT TRAVELS
INSIDE OF TINY LITTLE TUBES IN
THE TRUNK AND BRANCHES.

Ari says, WHOA.

Ari drinks.

[Slurping]

Elinor says, OH. THE TUBES LOOK
LIKE THE STRAW IN ARI'S JUICE BOX.

Ari says, WOW. LOOK.
I'M A TREE.

[Ari slurps his drink, everyone laughs]

Farmer Bear says, TREES ARE MORE
THAN JUST LEAVES AND FRUIT ON
THE OUTSIDE. THERE'S A LOT
HAPPENING INSIDE OF THEM, TOO.

NOW, WHO WANTS TO HELP ME
GATHER ALL THIS TREE SAP?

The children say, ME!

The children take buckets off the trees and replace them with new buckets. They carry the buckets of sap to Farmer Bear and she pours the sap into a large orange pot.

[Clanking, flapping, pouring, upbeat music plays]

Ari asks, CAN I TRY THE TREE
SAP, FARMER BEAR?

Farmer Bear says, SURE.
GO AHEAD, ARI.

[Splashing, slurping]

Ari says, IT TASTES LIKE
WATER. MAYBE A TINY BIT
OF SYRUP FLAVOUR.

Olive and Elinor try the syrup.

[Splashing, slurping]

Elinor says, HMM. HUH?

BUT FARMER BEAR, IF THE
TREE SAP IS WATERY AND
NOT SWEET, HOW CAN YOU
MAKE SWEET SYRUP OUT
OF IT?

[Giggling]

Farmer Bear says, WELL, IT'S TIME
TO HEAD TO THE SUGAR SHACK
TO FIND OUT.

Farmer Bear carries the orange pot inside a small wooden shack. Two orange pots rest over partially-bricked fire pits. Steam rises above one of the pots as a fire burns beneath it.

Farmer Bear says, WELCOME TO MY
SUGAR SHACK. THIS IS WHERE WE
TURN THE TREE SAP INTO SYRUP.

WE COOK IT FOR A LONG TIME, AND
THAT MAKES IT THICKER AND
THICKER AND SWEETER AND
SWEETER, UNTIL...

Farmer Bear pours the sap into the steaming pot.

[Splashing]

Elinor says, ...IT TURNS INTO
DELICIOUS SYRUP.

Farmer Bear says, THAT'S RIGHT.
THIS ONE COOKED FOR A LONG TIME,
BUT NOW IT'S BEEN SITTING AND
COOLING OFF SINCE THIS MORNING.

Ari asks, IS IT READY YET?
SHOULD I TASTE IT?

YOU KNOW, JUST TO CHECK.
NO PRESSURE.

Farmer Bear says, HA-HA.
I THINK IT'S READY.

[Splashing]

Farmer Bear dips a ladle into the cooled syrup. She brings the ladle to the children.

Ari cheers, WOO-HOO!

The children sample the maple syrup.

Elinor says, IT'S READY.

[Slurping]

Olive says, IT'S SO GOOD.

Ari says, HMM.
I'M NOT TOTALLY SURE.
CAN I TRY SOME MORE?

[Olive and Elinor laugh, slurping]

Farmer Bear says, OKAY.

NOW, IT'S TIME TO FILL UP
THE BOTTLES SO EVERYONE
CAN HAVE SYRUP WITH
THEIR PANCAKES.

[Splashing]

Elinor says, AWESOME.

DO WE NEED TO FILL UP ALL
THE BOTTLES?

Farmer Bear says, OH, YES.
THAT WAY, EVERYONE WILL
HAVE THEIR OWN BOTTLE
OF SYRUP.

Mrs. Rabbit says, OH, HI, KIDS.
HI, FARMER BEAR.

Farmer Bear says, HELLO,
RANGER RABBIT.

Elinor says, HI, MOM. WE'RE
HELPING MAKE THE SYRUP.

Mrs. Rabbit says, THAT'S WONDERFUL,
ELINOR. UH, FARMER BEAR, MS. LLAMA
HAS JUST ABOUT FINISHED MAKING THE
PANCAKES, AND SHE WANTS EVERYONE
TO EAT THEM WHILE THEY'RE HOT.

Farmer Bear says, OH.
UH, WELL, BUT WE HAVEN'T
FINISHED POURING THE SYRUP
INTO THE BOTTLES.

Olive says, UH-OH. IT'S GOING
TO TAKE A LONG TIME.

Farmer Bear says, MAYBE WE
SHOULD EAT THE PANCAKES
WITHOUT SYRUP THIS YEAR?

[Children gasp]

Ari, Olive, and Elinor exclaim,
PANCAKES WITHOUT SYRUP?

Elinor says, THAT'S LIKE HAVING
TOAST WITHOUT BUTTER.

Olive says, OR A SANDWICH
WITHOUT LETTUCE.

Ari says, OR A PICKLE WITHOUT
PEANUT BUTTER.

Olive says, HUH?

Ari explains, I LIKE PICKLES
WITH PEANUT BUTTER.

Mrs. Rabbit says, LET'S FOCUS ON
THE SYRUP. CAN WE HELP YOU GET
IT INTO BOTTLES?

Farmer Bear says, I DON'T KNOW.
I ONLY HAVE ONE LADLE.

In a thought bubble above her head, Elinor imagines water moving through tree roots up the tree trunk.

[Popping, upbeat music plays]

Elinor says, HMM. HOW CAN WE
GET THE SYRUP INTO THE
BOTTLES FASTER? HMM.

WAIT. I THINK I HAVE AN IDEA.
I'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

Elinor returns to the sugar shack with Sally Beaver and her mother.

[Upbeat music plays]

Elinor says, OKAY.
HERE'S WHAT I'M THINKING.

TREES USE LITTLE TUBES TO
SPREAD TREE SAP TO ALL THE
DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE
TREE, RIGHT?

WELL, WHAT IF WE BUILD SOMETHING
THAT SPREADS THE SYRUP TO THE
BOTTLES, LIKE THIS?

Elinor holds up a sketch.

Farmer Bear says, OH, THAT'S A
GREAT IDEA, ELINOR.

THAT WILL HELP US FILL LOTS
OF BOTTLES ALL AT ONCE.
LET'S TRY IT.

Sally and her mother nod at each other.

[Upbeat music plays, munching]

Sally and her mother chew a funnel with five spouts. Maple syrup flows down the funnels into bottles.

Ari says, WOW! AWESOME.

Elinor says, THANK YOU, SALLY
AND MRS. BEAVER. NOW, LET'S
SPREAD THE SYRUP.

[Upbeat music plays, dripping]

Ari, Elinor, and Olive watch sap drip into a bucket that hangs on a tree trunk.

Ari, Elinor, and Olive sing, SYRUP,
SYRUP SYRUP FROM THE TREES.
LET'S FILL THE BOTTLES
TO SHARE WITH YOU AND ME.

[Clanking, whistling]

Ari, Elinor, and Olive sing, INSIDE
A TREE, TREE SAP MOVES ABOUT,
LET'S LEARN FROM THIS
TO SPREAD THE SYRUP OUT.

POUR IT IN THE TOP
AND WATCH IT MOVE DOWN,
JUST LIKE A TREE
IT ALL SPREADS AROUND.

[Splashing]

Ari, Elinor, and Olive sing, SYRUP,
SYRUP, SYRUP FROM THE TREES.
LET'S FILL THE BOTTLES
TO SHARE WITH YOU AND ME.

Farmer Bear asks, WHO'S READY
FOR SYRUP?

Animals cheer, YAY!

Olive, Elinor, and Ari help pass out bottles of maple syrup.

[Splashing, munching, sniffing]

Olive says, MM-HMM.
IT'S SO GOOD.

Ari says, I'M SO READY TO EAT
THESE PANCAKES.

Elinor says, ARI, WAIT.
DON'T FORGET THE SYRUP.

Ari says, AW, THANKS, ELINOR.
YOU'RE SO SWEET.

HUH, HUH?

Ari pours maple syrup on his pancake.

[Olive, Ari, and Elinor laugh]

[Upbeat music plays]
