Transcript: Water You Doing? / Thinking About Blinking
Elinor, a white rabbit with long straight dark brown hair, wears a red and purple dress. She runs on a dirt path and stops to look at a monarch butterfly perched on a grey rock.
[Happy music plays]
Elinor sings, WHEREVER I GO
I SEE THINGS THAT I WANT
TO KNOW,
WHEREVER I AM I FIND THINGS
I WANT TO UNDERSTAND.
GO AND EXPLORE, LISTEN AND SEE
JUST FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
Elinor smiles as she sings on a swing on a swing set. Olive Elephant swings on a swing beside her. Olive wears a blue bow on her head, with a blue shirt, skirts and leggings. Ari Bat hands upside down from the bar on the top of the swing set.
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, WHY DO BIRDS SING?
AND HOW DO THEY FLY?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor watches ants through a magnifying glass.
Elinor sings WHY DO ANTS MARCH?
AND WHERE DO THEY HIDE?
THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
WHEREVER YOU TURN
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
AND FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
[Chiming]
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, ASK A QUESTION
WHAT WILL YOU FIND?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, JUST LISTEN AND SEE
COME AND WONDER WITH ME.
Text above Elinor reads, “Elinor Wonders Why.” A magnifying glass with pink bunny ears replaces the letter ‘O’ in Elinor’s name.
Blue text reads, “Water You Doing?”
Elinor says, “WATER YOU DOING?”
Olive follows Elinor as they walk past trees.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, HANDS UP IF WANT TO GO
EXPLORING!
[Flapping]
Ari says, OOH, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!
I LOVE TO GO EXPLORE!
IT MEANS I GET TO RUN AND
JUMP AND...
[Grunting]
Ari says, WHOA, WHOA! OOMPH.
Ari lands on the grass next to Elinor.
[Grunting]
Ari says, OKAY, ELINOR. WHERE
SHOULD WE GO EXPLORE?
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, HMM... LET'S SEE.
OH! HOW ABOUT THE BIG TREE
ON THE HILL?
Ari says, YEAH
[Tense music plays]
Olive says, WAIT A SECOND.
LOOK AT THIS.
Ari says, COOL! ANTS!
Olive points at a line of ants using a rock, leaf, and stick to cross a puddle.
Olive says, YEAH. LOOK, THEY'RE
TRYING TO GET FROM ONE SIDE
OF THIS PUDDLE TO THE
OTHER SIDE.
BECAUSE THEY CAN'T SWIM, THEY
CLIMB UP THIS ROCK AND LEAF
AND ONTO THIS STICK.
AND THAT GETS THEM TO THE
OTHER SIDE.
Ari says, COOL! A STICK BRIDGE!
Elinor says, ANTS ARE SO CLEVER.
Olive says, YEP. THEY ALWAYS
FIND A WAY TO GET TO WHERE
THEY'RE GOING.
Elinor says, AND SPEAKING OF
GOING, LET'S GET GOING TO
THAT TREE.
[Skittering, birds chirp]
Ari says, OH, HEY, I HAVE AN IDEA!
LET'S PRETEND TO BE ANTS.
Elinor asks, WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
Ari says, LET'S SEE IF WE CAN GET
TO THE TREE ON THAT HILL
WITHOUT WALKING ON THE GROUND.
JUST LIKE THE ANTS WALKED ON
THAT STICK TO CROSS THE PUDDLE.
LIKE THIS.
Ari walks across a log, then jumps on rocks.
[Grunting]
Ari says, TA-DA!
Olive says, THAT'S FUN.
I WONDER HOW LONG WE CAN GO
WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GROUND.
Ari flies in front of Elinor and Olive.
Ari says, YEAH. I WONDER.
[Elinor and Olive laugh]
Elinor says, NO, FLYING DOESN'T COUNT.
Ari says, JUST KIDDING.
[Grunting, flapping, upbeat music plays]
Olive, Elinor and Ari line up on the log. Olive jumps on to a rock and the others follow behind her.
[Grunting, Olive laughs, grunting, Olive and Elinor laugh, grunting]
Ari says, WHOA.
Olive, Elinor and Ari jump on logs, tree stumps, and rocks.
[Grunting, laughing]
[Gasp]
Olvie says, UH-OH.
I THINK WE RAN OUT OF
PLACES TO STEP ON.
Elinor asks, READY?
ONE! TWO!
Elinor, Olive and Ari shout, THREE!
Olive, Elinor and Ari jump on to the grass.
[Laughter, birds chirp]
Ari shouts, THAT WAS FUN!
Olive says, WELL, WE ALMOST
MADE IT TO THE TREE.
Elinor says, I GUESS WE'LL HAVE
TO RUN THE REST OF THE WAY
ON THE GROUND.
LET'S GO EXPLORE!
Elinor stops at the edge of a stream and backs away from it.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, WHAT? THERE'S
A STREAM IN THE WAY.
Olive says, HMM... WE CAN'T GET
TO THE OTHER SIDE WITHOUT
GETTING WET!
Elinor says, HMM... I WONDER HOW
WE CAN GET ACROSS.
A fish jumps in the water.
[Splash]
Ari says, WHOA!
DID YOU SEE THAT LITTLE FISH?
HELLO, LITTLE FISHY. YOU LOOK
PRETTY HAPPY.
Olive says, IT MUST BE NICE TO
HAVE YOUR OWN SWIMMING POOL.
Ari asks, ANY IDEAS HOW WE
CAN GET ACROSS, LITTLE FISHY?
Elinor says, I KNOW.
LET'S BE LIKE THE ANTS AGAIN.
Olive asks, WHAT DO YOU
MEAN, ELINOR?
Elinor says, I MEAN, THE ANTS
DIDN'T GIVE UP AND TURN AROUND
WHEN THEY GOT TO THE PUDDLE.
THEY FOUND A WAY.
Olive says, YOU'RE RIGHT, ELINOR.
Ari says, YEAH.
Elinor says, THE STREAM ISN'T AS
WIDE UP THERE. MAYBE IT'LL BE
EASIER TO CROSS.
COME ON.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, SEE? IT'S NOT AS WIDE,
SO IT'S NOT AS FAR TO THE OTHER
SIDE. MAYBE WE CAN GET ACROSS
HERE WITHOUT GETTING WET.
[Birds chirp]
Olive says, HMM... I DON'T KNOW.
I DON'T THINK I CAN JUMP
THAT FAR.
Elinor says, WE NEED MORE IDEAS.
[Gentle music plays]
Olive says, I'LL DRAW IT IN MY
NOTEBOOK. THIS IS THE STREAM.
AND THIS IS US ON ONE SIDE.
Elinor says, AND WE WANT TO GET
TO THE OTHER SIDE, BUT IT'S TOO
FAR TO JUMP.
WHAT COULD WE USE TO HELP
US GET ACROSS?
[Rustling, birds chirp, stream burble]
Ari says, ALL I SEE IS ROCKS.
[Dramatic music plays]
Elinor says, ROCKS! THAT'S IT!
Ari asks, UH, WHAT'S IT?
Elinor says, REMEMBER WHEN WE
WERE PRETENDING TO BE ANTS
AND WE WALKED ON THINGS
INSTEAD OF ON THE GROUND?
Ari says, MM-HMM.
Elinor asks, WHAT IF WE PUT SOME
BIG ROCKS IN THE WATER?
[Scratching, paper rustles]
Olive says, THEN WE COULD WALK
ON THE ROCKS TO GET ACROSS!
Ari says, AWESOME IDEA.
LET'S DO IT!
Elinor asks, READY?
Olive, Elinor and Ari say, READY.
They push against a large rock.
[Grunting, splashing]
Olive says, PERFECT.
NOW, JUST ONE MORE ROCK LIKE
THAT, AND WE CAN WALK ACROSS.
They push another large rock to the stream.
[Grunting, splashing]
Elinor says, YAY!
WE BUILT OUR OWN PATH.
Olive says, WELL, LET'S SEE IF IT WORKS.
[Grunting, upbeat music plays]
They hop across the rocks and reach the other side of the stream.
Ari says, WE DID IT!
[Laughing, hands slap]
Elinor says, WE FOUND A WAY JUST
LIKE THE ANTS! NOW, WE CAN GO
EXPLORE THAT TREE!
[Rustling, upbeat music plays]
Ari, Olive and Elinor run in circles around the tree. A bug crawls on to Olive’s trunk.
[Laughing, gasp]
Elinor throws more acorns up to Ari as he juggles some.
Ari says, UH...
[Laughing, whooshing, clattering]
[Laughing, happy sighing, rustling]
Olive says, IT WAS A GREAT IDEA
TO GO TO THAT TREE.
Elinor says, THERE WAS SO MUCH
TO EXPLORE!
THOSE BIG LEAVES MADE IT NICE
AND SHADY, AND I'VE NEVER SEEN
THIS KIND OF NUT BEFORE.
Ari says, HEY, LET'S GO SHOW OUR
FISHY FRIEND WHAT WE FOUND!
[Upbeat music plays, splashing]
Elinor says, OH.
THERE'S A BIG PUDDLE HERE.
I DON'T REMEMBER STEPPING
IN A PUDDLE WHEN WE CAME
ACROSS BEFORE.
Olive suggests, MAYBE WE JUST
STEPPED AROUND IT.
[Birds sing]
Elinor says, HMM... MAYBE.
Ari says, COME ON!
LET'S GO SEE FISHY.
[Grunting]
Ari says, HEY, LITTLE FISHY.
LOOK AT WHAT WE... HUH?
Elinor asks, WHAT'S THE
MATTER, ARI?
Ari says, THERE WAS LOTS OF
WATER IN FISHY'S POOL BEFORE,
BUT NOW, THERE'S HARDLY ANY!
Olive asks, WHAT HAPPENED?
FISHY DOESN'T HAVE A LOT
OF ROOM TO MOVE AROUND IN!
Ari says, THAT CAN'T BE GOOD.
IF THE WATER KEEPS
GETTING LOWER...
[Olive gasps]
Olive says, WE HAVE TO HELP FISHY!
FISHY NEEDS MORE WATER TO
LIVE IN!
Ari says, THE WATER IN FISHY'S
POOL USED TO BE THIS HIGH,
AND NOW, IT'S A LOT LOWER.
Olive says, THE WATER MUST HAVE
GONE SOMEWHERE.
Elinor says, HMM... I THINK I HAVE
AN IDEA.
LET'S GO BACK TO WHERE WE
CROSSED THE STREAM.
COME ON!
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS!
Ari says, BYE AGAIN, FISHY!
WE'LL BE BACK.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, THERE'S LESS WATER
IN FISHY'S POOL, BUT THERE'S
MORE WATER HERE, NEXT TO
THE ROCKS WE MOVED.
[Stream burbles]
Olive says, YOU'RE RIGHT, ELINOR,
BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Ari asks, HEY, DID YOU SEE
THAT TWIG?
Elinor says, I SAW IT.
[Water burbles]
Olive says, HERE COMES
ANOTHER ONE.
Ari says, IT'S GOING AROUND THE
ROCKS AND INTO THAT PUDDLE.
Olive says, SO THE WATER'S MAKING
A PUDDLE HERE INSTEAD OF GOING
DOWN TO FISHY'S POOL.
Elinor says, UH-OH!
WHEN WE PUT THE ROCKS IN THE
STREAM TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE,
WE MADE A WALL THAT STOPS THE
WATER FROM GOING TO FISHY'S POOL!
Olive says, WE NEVER MEANT FOR
THAT TO HAPPEN.
Elinor says, OH, POOR FISHY! ALL
BECAUSE WE WANT TO EXPLORE
THAT TREE.
Ari says, WE HAVE TO FIX IT, OR FISHY
MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY WATER LEFT
TO SWIM IN.
Elinor asks, BUT WHAT CAN WE DO?
Olive says, LET'S PULL THE ROCKS
BACK SO THE WATER CAN GO
THROUGH AGAIN.
[Grunting, splashing, water flows]
Ari says, IT'S WORKING. LET'S MOVE
THE OTHER ONE AWAY.
[Grunting]
Elinor says, YAY! WE UNDID IT.
[Hands slap]
Ari says, LET'S GO SEE IF THERE'S
MORE WATER IN FISHY'S POOL.
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, OKAY.
COME ON, OLIVE.
Olive says, UM, THAT MIGHT BE A
PROBLEM. NOW THAT THE ROCKS
ARE GONE, I CAN'T GET
ACROSS ANYMORE.
Elinor says, UH-OH.
WE CAN'T PUT THE ROCKS BACK.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
Elinor and Ari watch a twig float downstream.
[Water burbles, popping, gentle music plays]
Elinor says, WAIT, I KNOW!
REMEMBER THE ANTS WE SAW
CROSSING OVER THE PUDDLE ON
THE STICK?
MAYBE WE CAN MAKE A BRIDGE
LIKE THE ANTS MADE.
[Scratching, birds chirp]
Olive says, WE HAVE THE ROCKS
ON THE SIDES OF THE STREAM.
WE CAN MAKE A BRIDGE... LIKE THIS.
Ari says, HMM... WHAT ABOUT THE
LOGS WE WERE WALKING ON BEFORE?
ONE OF THOSE MIGHT WORK.
Elinor says, GREAT IDEA, ARI!
LET'S GO!
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive, Elinor and Ari sing,
WE'LL FIND A WAY, FIND A WAY
IF WE TRY AND TRY AGAIN
WE'LL FIND A BETTER WAY.
FIRST WE BUILT A WALL OF ROCKS
BECAUSE WE DIDN'T KNOW
IT WOULD STOP THE STREAM FROM
GOING WHERE IT USED TO GO.
[Stream burbles]
Olive, Elinor and Ari sing,
WE'LL FIND A WAY, FIND A WAY
IF WE TRY AND TRY AGAIN
WE'LL FIND A BETTER WAY.
SO WE BUILT A LITTLE BRIDGE
THAT LETS THE STREAM GO THROUGH
NOW WE GO JUST WHERE WE WANT
AND THE STREAM CAN TOO.
WE FOUND A WAY, FOUND A WAY
WE TRIED AND TRIED AGAIN
AND FOUND A BETTER WAY.
Elinor says, COME ON, OLIVE!
CROSS THE BRIDGE!
[Gasp, laughing]
Olive says, IT WORKS!
Ari and Elinor cheer, YAY!
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari says, LET'S GO TELL FISHY!
HI, FISHY. WE'RE REALLY SORRY
WE TOOK WATER AWAY FROM
YOUR POOL.
[Water burbles]
Olive explains, WE DIDN'T KNOW
THE ROCKS WE MOVED WOULD
STOP THE WATER FROM
GOING THROUGH.
Elinor says, BUT JUST LIKE THE
ANTS, WE DIDN'T GIVE UP, AND
WE FOUND A BETTER WAY.
WE BUILD A BRIDGE. IT'S MUCH
BETTER, BECAUSE IT DOESN'T
STOP THE WATER. RIGHT, FISHY?
[Splashing, upbeat music plays, slide whistle]
Ari says, FISHY SAYS... "RIGHT!"
[Laughing]
Elsewhere, Olive, Ari, and Elinor lie on their stomachs by a river.
Ari says, WOW! THAT FISH IS
SO JUMPY!
Elinor asks, WHERE DID THAT
FISH COME FROM?
Ms. Mole says, THAT FISH IS ON
ITS WAY TO LAY EGGS UP
THE RIVER.
Olvie says, I DIDN'T KNOW FISH
COULD LAY EGGS.
Ms. Mole says, THEY SURE CAN.
MAMA FISH HAS TO FIND A SAFER
SPOT WHERE THE WATER MOVES
MUCH MORE SLOWLY.
LET'S HAVE A LOOK.
SOME FISH, LIKE SALMON, START
LIFE AS TINY EGGS.
IN THE SPRING, AFTER MANY WEEKS,
THE BABY FISH HATCH FROM
THEIR EGGS.
Ari, Elinor, and Olive say, AW!
[Book pages turn, water burbles]
Ms. Mole says, THE BABY FISH ARE
CARRIED DOWN THE RIVER,
PUSHED BY THE WATER.
LITTLE BABY FISH GO DOWN THE
RIVER AND EVENTUALLY GO OUT
TO SEA TO GROW BIGGER
AND STRONGER.
IT'S SO STRONG THAT NOW, IT CAN
SWIM UP THE RIVER WHEN IT'S
TIME TO LAY EGGS.
[Splashing]
Elinor says, BUT MS. MOLE, THERE'S
SOMETHING BLOCKING THE WAY.
HOW CAN THE FISH SWIM UP THE
RIVER NOW?
Ms. Mole says, GOOD OBSERVATION.
SOMEONE BUILT A DAM. FISH CAN
JUMP VERY HIGH, BUT NOT
THAT HIGH.
LUCKILY, WHOEVER BUILT THE DAM
BUILT A FISH LADDER, TOO.
IT CAN JUMP UP EACH STEP IN THE
LADDER TO GET OVER THE DAM AND
BACK TO THE SAME CALM POOL
WHERE IT WAS BORN.
[Laughing, splashing]
Elinor says, OUR FISH MADE IT, TOO.
WELCOME HOME, FISHY FRIEND.
Blue text reads, “Thinking About Blinking.”
Elinor says, “THINKING ABOUT BLINKING.”
Elinor skips to a school and opens a door.
[Humming, door creaks]
Elinor says, HUH? HMM... WHERE
IS EVERYBODY? HMM...
[Door slams, slide whistle]
Olive says, HI, ELINOR.
Elinor says, WHOA!
YOU STARTLED ME, OLIVE.
[Laughing]
Olive says, SORRY, BUT YOU'VE
GOT TO COME QUICK. YOU
SHOULD SEE THIS!
[Upbeat music plays]
Camilla Camel speaks through a rolled up piece of paper.
Camilla says, COME ONE, COME
ALL! WELCOME, EVERYONE,
TO TODAY'S STARING CONTEST!
[Cheering]
Elinor asks, WHAT'S A
STARING CONTEST?
Olive explains, A STARING CONTEST
IS WHEN TWO PLAYERS STARE INTO
EACH OTHER'S EYES UNTIL ONE OF
THEM BLINKS, LIKE THIS.
THE ONE WHO DOES NOT BLINK
WINS THE CONTEST.
[Slide whistle]
Elinor says, OH!
[Upbeat music plays]
Camilla says, INTRODUCING YOUR
CURRENT CHAMPION.
HE HAS BROWN HAIR AND
THE LONGEST STARE. KOA!
[Koa chuckles, cheering]
Camilla says, PLAYING WITH HIM
TODAY, THE BAT WITH ALL
THAT, ARI!
[Cheering]
Ari says, I'LL WIN THIS THING IN
THE BLINK OF AN EYE.
[Laughing]
Camilla says, REMEMBER, WHOEVER
CAN GO THE LONGEST WITHOUT
BLINKING WINS.
READY? AND... GO!
[Tense music plays]
Koa stares at Ari until his eyes water.
[Tear drips]
Koa says, HUH?
[Cheering]
Ari smiles and says, GOOD GAME,
KOA. GOOD GAME.
Koa rides down a slide.
[Fists tap, upbeat music plays, scraping]
Koa says, WHOA!
Ari slides and says, YAY!
[Cheering, flapping]
Ari asks, ANYONE ELSE WANT
TO HAVE A STARING CONTEST?
Ari faces his classmates in staring contests.
[Dings, slide whistle]
Ari cheers, YAY! AH!
One of the goat twins says, BAH!
Ari says, YES!
Ari stares at Ms. Mole through a window as she washes the glass.
[Squeaking]
Ms. Mole says, HUH?
Ari cheers, WHOO-HOO!
WHO'S THE BEST AT NOT
BLINKING THEIR EYES?
I... AM. GET IT? EYE?
WHOO, WHOO!
[Cheering]
Elinor says, ARI IS SO GOOD
AT NOT BLINKING.
Olive says, YEAH, HE'S THE NOT
BLINKING KING.
Olive says, HMM... BUT I WONDER,
WHY DO WE HAVE TO BLINK?
Olive says, HUH?
WHY DO WE HAVE TO BLINK?
HMM... I'VE NEVER THOUGHT
ABOUT IT BEFORE.
MY EYES CLOSE WHEN I SLEEP.
MAYBE BLINKING IS HOW OUR
EYES TRY TO GO TO BED.
Olive imagines blinking as she lies on her bed at night.
[Popping, crickets chirp]
Elinor says, BUT NONE OF
THE KIDS IN THE CONTEST
SEEM SLEEPY.
MAYBE IT'S OUR EYES CLAPPING
BECAUSE THEY LIKE WHAT T
HEY SEE.
[Clap, laughing]
Olive says, NO, THAT CAN'T BE IT.
I DON'T HEAR ANY CLAPPING WHEN
I BLINK.
Elinor says, YOU'RE RIGHT.
HMM... I KNOW.
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, OKAY, I'LL WATCH
YOU AND SEE IF YOU BLINK.
[Tense music plays, ding]
Elinor says, YOU JUST DID IT.
[Ding]
Olive asks, I DID?
YOU JUST BLINKED, TOO.
Elinor says, REALLY?
BUT I WASN'T EVEN THINKING
ABOUT BLINKING.
Olive says, I GUESS WE BLINK
WITHOUT EVEN NOTICING.
MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING OUR
BODY DOES ALL BY ITSELF.
Elinor says, WHOA!
LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS
WHEN WE TRY NOT TO BLINK.
[Grunting, tense music plays, buzzing, ding]
Elinor says, WOW.
IT'S REALLY HARD NOT TO BLINK.
MY EYES START TO WATER AND
FEEL TIRED.
Olive says, YEAH, IT MUST BE
SOMETHING OUR BODIES HAVE
TO DO.
Elinor asks, BUT WHY?
IT'S A MYSTERY!
Elinor rubs her hands together.
Olive says, IT'S A BLINKING MYSTERY.
[Triumphant music plays]
Ari cheers, WHOO-HOO!
THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER!
I'M THE BEST STARE-ER IN
THE WORLD!
WHAT YOU DOING?
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, WE'RE TRYING
TO LEARN EVERYTHING WE
CAN ABOUT BLINKING.
Olive says, SO FAR, WE'VE
LEARNED THAT YOU BLINK
WITHOUT THINKING AND
THAT IT'S REALLY HARD
NOT TO BLINK.
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari says, COOL!
THIS IS AN AWESOME IDEA.
IF I CAN KNOW MORE ABOUT
BLINKING, I CAN WIN EVEN
MORE STARING CONTESTS.
WHOO-HOO! LET'S GO LEARN
MORE ABOUT BLINKING.
[Flapping, upbeat music plays]
Ari, Olive and Elinor walk beside a stream.
[Rustling]
Olive smiles and says, LOOK,
ARI. I THINK SOMEONE'S
FOLLOWING YOU.
Elinor says, A FISH! OH, HE'S
SO CUTE.
[Pop]
Ari says, WELL, BUBBLE BACK
TO YOU, TOO, FISHY FISH.
AH, YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN
ME TODAY.
I WAS SO GOOD AT STARING.
Olive says, HEY, ARI, I THINK
IT LIKES YOU.
[Splash, background laughter]
Ari says, HMM... CAN YOU
FOLLOW...THIS?
Ari marches in a circle.
[Grunting, rustling, upbeat music plays, splash]
Elinor says, HEY, FISHY FISH,
YOU HAVEN'T BLINKED ONCE
SINCE WE MET YOU.
Ari says, YOU'RE RIGHT.
FISHY FISH, YOU'RE THE PERFECT
PLAYER TO HAVE A STARING
CONTEST WITH.
Olive says, I DON'T KNOW, ARI.
THAT FISH SEEMS REALLY
GOOD AT NOT BLINKING.
Ari says, MEH. I COULD BEAT IT
WITH MY EYES CLOSED.
Olive says, BUT YOUR EYES NEED
TO BE OPEN.
Ari says, OH. THAT'S FINE.
THIS CONTEST IS GOING TO BE
SO AWESOME, YOU WON'T BE
ABLE TO CLOSE YOUR EYES.
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive says, UM, YOU'RE NOT
SUPPOSED TO CLOSE YOUR
EYES IN A STARING CONTEST.
Ari says, HUH. OH, YEAH.
NEVER MIND.
LET THE CONTEST... BEGIN.
Ari stares at the fish.
[Bubbling, ding, gasp]
Ari says, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
[Splash]
Elinor says, WOW! THAT FISH
DOESN'T BLINK AT ALL.
Ari says, ALRIGHT, REMATCH.
LET'S HAVE ANOTHER
STARING CONTEST.
Elinor and Olive notices Ms. Mole walking across a small bridge.
[Whistling, footsteps, gasp]
Elinor says, HI, MS. MOLE.
Ms. Mole says, HI, ELINOR.
HI, OLIVE. HI, ARI.
HI, UM, STARING FISH.
THAT'S BETTER.
[Splash]
Elinor asks, WHAT YOU DOING,
MS. MOLE?
Ms. Mole says, I WAS CLEANING
THE SCHOOL WINDOWS, BUT
MY SPONGES GOT DRY. AND
I CAN'T CLEAN WITH
DRY SPONGES.
Elinor asks, HMM... HOW DID THEY
GET DRY, MS. MOLE?
Ms. Mole says, I LEFT THEM OUT
TOO LONG. WET THINGS GET DRY
IF YOU LEAVE THEM OUT IN
THE OPEN.
WHAT ARE YOU KIDS UP TO?
Olive says, ARI'S IN A STARING
CONTEST WITH THIS FISH.
[Grunting]
Ari says, I CAN'T KEEP MY
EYES OPEN!
I HAVE TO BLINK!
[Ding]
Ari says, YOU WIN, FISHY FISH.
YOU'RE... THE CHAMPION.
I TRIED REALLY HARD TO KEEP
FROM BLINKING.
BUT THEN MY EYES FELT SCRATCHY,
LIKE THEY WERE, I GUESS, DRY OR
SOMETHING. AND THEN... I BLINKED.
[Splashing]
Elinor says, HMM... DRY.
[Squishing, gasping]
Elinor says, MAYBE THAT'S IT!
Ari says, YOU THINK I NEED A
SPONGE TO WIN?
[Elinor laughs, gentle music plays]
Elinor says, NO, MAYBE OUR EYES
DRY OUT BECAUSE WE LEAVE
THEM OPEN.
JUST LIKE MS. MOLE'S SPONGES
GOT DRY WHEN SHE LEFT THEM
OUT. BUT WHEN WE CLOSE OUR
EYES, WE KEEP THEM WET.
[Slide whistle]
Ari says, HMM... I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT.
WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES OR BLINK,
IT MAKES THEM FEEL WETTER
AND BETTER!
[Sigh]
Elinor says, THAT'S WHY WE BLINK!
TO KEEP OUR EYES WET.
Ari says, AND THE LONGER WE
DON'T BLINK, THE MORE DRY
OUR EYES GET.
Olive says, HMM... I WONDER IF
THAT'S WHY THE FISH DOESN'T
HAVE TO BLINK.
Elinor says, YEAH, HIS EYES ARE
ALWAYS IN THE WATER, SO THEY
CAN'T GET DRY.
THEY'RE ALWAYS WET.
Ms. Mole says, OH, MY LITTLE
SCIENTISTS HAVE DONE IT AGAIN.
GREAT OBSERVATION, KIDS.
WE BLINK TO KEEP OUR EYES
FROM GETTING TOO DRY.
THAT'S WHY FISH DON'T NEED
TO BLINK. THEY'RE ALWAYS IN
THE WATER.
IN FACT, MOST FISH, LIKE THIS
ONE HERE, DON'T EVEN HAVE
EYELIDS. THEY DON'T NEED THEM!
Elinor says, WHOA.
Olive says, COOL.
Ari says, I KNEW SOMETHING
WAS FISHY ABOUT THAT FISH.
NO WONDER YOU WON. YOU
DON'T EVEN HAVE EYELIDS
TO BLINK.
Ms. Mole says, OUR BODIES DO A
LOT OF THINGS WITHOUT YOU
HAVING TO THINK ABOUT IT,
LIKE BREATHING OR BLINKING.
IT'S JUST YOUR BODY'S WAY OF
MAKING SURE IT STAYS SAFE
AND HEALTHY.
Ari says, SO OUR BODIES ARE
THE REAL CHAMPIONS.
Elinor says, WE DID IT!
WE SOLVED THE MYSTERY!
Ari says, YEAH!
Olive cheers, WHOO-HOO!
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor, Olive and Ari sing,
Ari sings, DID YOU KNOW YOU'RE
ALWAYS BLINKING?
Elinor sings, YOU DO IT
WITHOUT THINKING.
Olive sings, TAKE A MINUTE
LET THAT SINK IN.
Elinor sings, WOW, IT'S JUST
SO INTERESTING.
Ari sings, BLINKING IN YOUR BEDROOM.
Elinor sings, BLINKING DURING CLASS .
BLINKING WHEN IT'S PLAYTIME.
Olive sings, OR WHEN YOU'RE
ROLLING IN THE GRASS.
Ari sings, IT'S EASIER TO SEE WHEN
YOUR EYES ARE NICE AND WET,
YOUR BODY DOES IT JUST SO YOU
DON'T FORGET.
[Splashing]
Ari sings underwater, YOU DON'T
WANT THEM TO GET DRY.
BLINKING IS BATH TIME
FOR YOUR EYES.
Elinor sings, SO YOU SEE YOU'RE
ALWAYS BLINKING.
Ari sings, YOU DO IT WITHOUT THINKING.
Olive sings, TAKE A MINUTE
LET THAT SINK IN.
Elinor sings, WOW, THAT IS
SO INTERESTING.
[Ari cheers]
Ari says, WELL, I GUESS YOU CAN'T
KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOREVER,
UNLESS YOU'RE A FISH.
Ms. Mole says, THAT'S RIGHT.
YOU DON'T WANT YOUR EYES
TO GET ALL DRY LIKE MY SPONGES.
Olive asks, DOES THIS MEAN YOU'RE
GOING TO QUIT STARING
CONTESTS, ARI?
Ari says, NOT YET. I STILL HAVE TO
BEAT FISHY FISH.
Elinor asks, HOW ARE YOU GOING
TO DO THAT?
[Bird sings, water burbles]
Ari says, I HAVE AN IDEA.
OLIVE, MAY I HAVE SOME PAPER
AND A CRAYON?
Ari smiles as he draws in Olive’s green notebook.
[Scratching]
Ari turns the notebook and shows Elinor, Olive and Ms. Mole a drawing of himself.
Ari says, TA-DA!
Elinor says, WOW.
[Paper tears, water burbles, upbeat music plays]
Ari uses a rock to hang his drawing over the side of the bridge. The fish swims over and looks at it.
Elinor says, I GOT A FEELING
HE'S GOING TO BE THERE FOR
A LONG TIME.
[Laughing, water bubbles]
[Upbeat music plays]

Ari lands on the grass next to Elinor.
[Grunting]
Ari says, OKAY, ELINOR. WHERE
SHOULD WE GO EXPLORE?
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, HMM... LET'S SEE.
OH! HOW ABOUT THE BIG TREE
ON THE HILL?
Ari says, YEAH
[Tense music plays]
Olive says, WAIT A SECOND.
LOOK AT THIS.
Ari says, COOL! ANTS!
Olive points at a line of ants using a rock, leaf, and stick to cross a puddle.
Olive says, YEAH. LOOK, THEY'RE
TRYING TO GET FROM ONE SIDE
OF THIS PUDDLE TO THE
OTHER SIDE.
BECAUSE THEY CAN'T SWIM, THEY
CLIMB UP THIS ROCK AND LEAF
AND ONTO THIS STICK.
AND THAT GETS THEM TO THE
OTHER SIDE.
Ari says, COOL! A STICK BRIDGE!
Elinor says, ANTS ARE SO CLEVER.
Olive says, YEP. THEY ALWAYS
FIND A WAY TO GET TO WHERE
THEY'RE GOING.
Elinor says, AND SPEAKING OF
GOING, LET'S GET GOING TO
THAT TREE.
[Skittering, birds chirp]
Ari says, OH, HEY, I HAVE AN IDEA!
LET'S PRETEND TO BE ANTS.
Elinor asks, WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
Ari says, LET'S SEE IF WE CAN GET
TO THE TREE ON THAT HILL
WITHOUT WALKING ON THE GROUND.
JUST LIKE THE ANTS WALKED ON
THAT STICK TO CROSS THE PUDDLE.
LIKE THIS.
Ari walks across a log, then jumps on rocks.
[Grunting]
Ari says, TA-DA!
Olive says, THAT'S FUN.
I WONDER HOW LONG WE CAN GO
WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GROUND.
Ari flies in front of Elinor and Olive.
Ari says, YEAH. I WONDER.
[Elinor and Olive laugh]
Elinor says, NO, FLYING DOESN'T COUNT.
Ari says, JUST KIDDING.
[Grunting, flapping, upbeat music plays]
Olive, Elinor and Ari line up on the log. Olive jumps on to a rock and the others follow behind her.
[Grunting, Olive laughs, grunting, Olive and Elinor laugh, grunting]
Ari says, WHOA.
Olive, Elinor and Ari jump on logs, tree stumps, and rocks.
[Grunting, laughing]
[Gasp]
Olvie says, UH-OH.
I THINK WE RAN OUT OF
PLACES TO STEP ON.
Elinor asks, READY?
ONE! TWO!
Elinor, Olive and Ari shout, THREE!
Olive, Elinor and Ari jump on to the grass.
[Laughter, birds chirp]
Ari shouts, THAT WAS FUN!
Olive says, WELL, WE ALMOST
MADE IT TO THE TREE.
Elinor says, I GUESS WE'LL HAVE
TO RUN THE REST OF THE WAY
ON THE GROUND.
LET'S GO EXPLORE!
Elinor stops at the edge of a stream and backs away from it.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, WHAT? THERE'S
A STREAM IN THE WAY.
Olive says, HMM... WE CAN'T GET
TO THE OTHER SIDE WITHOUT
GETTING WET!
Elinor says, HMM... I WONDER HOW
WE CAN GET ACROSS.
A fish jumps in the water.
[Splash]
Ari says, WHOA!
DID YOU SEE THAT LITTLE FISH?
HELLO, LITTLE FISHY. YOU LOOK
PRETTY HAPPY.
Olive says, IT MUST BE NICE TO
HAVE YOUR OWN SWIMMING POOL.
Ari asks, ANY IDEAS HOW WE
CAN GET ACROSS, LITTLE FISHY?
Elinor says, I KNOW.
LET'S BE LIKE THE ANTS AGAIN.
Olive asks, WHAT DO YOU
MEAN, ELINOR?
Elinor says, I MEAN, THE ANTS
DIDN'T GIVE UP AND TURN AROUND
WHEN THEY GOT TO THE PUDDLE.
THEY FOUND A WAY.
Olive says, YOU'RE RIGHT, ELINOR.
Ari says, YEAH.
Elinor says, THE STREAM ISN'T AS
WIDE UP THERE. MAYBE IT'LL BE
EASIER TO CROSS.
COME ON.
[Rustling]
Elinor says, SEE? IT'S NOT AS WIDE,
SO IT'S NOT AS FAR TO THE OTHER
SIDE. MAYBE WE CAN GET ACROSS
HERE WITHOUT GETTING WET.
[Birds chirp]
Olive says, HMM... I DON'T KNOW.
I DON'T THINK I CAN JUMP
THAT FAR.
Elinor says, WE NEED MORE IDEAS.
[Gentle music plays]
Olive says, I'LL DRAW IT IN MY
NOTEBOOK. THIS IS THE STREAM.
AND THIS IS US ON ONE SIDE.
Elinor says, AND WE WANT TO GET
TO THE OTHER SIDE, BUT IT'S TOO
FAR TO JUMP.
WHAT COULD WE USE TO HELP
US GET ACROSS?
[Rustling, birds chirp, stream burble]
Ari says, ALL I SEE IS ROCKS.
[Dramatic music plays]
Elinor says, ROCKS! THAT'S IT!
Ari asks, UH, WHAT'S IT?
Elinor says, REMEMBER WHEN WE
WERE PRETENDING TO BE ANTS
AND WE WALKED ON THINGS
INSTEAD OF ON THE GROUND?
Ari says, MM-HMM.
Elinor asks, WHAT IF WE PUT SOME
BIG ROCKS IN THE WATER?
[Scratching, paper rustles]
Olive says, THEN WE COULD WALK
ON THE ROCKS TO GET ACROSS!
Ari says, AWESOME IDEA.
LET'S DO IT!
Elinor asks, READY?
Olive, Elinor and Ari say, READY.
They push against a large rock.
[Grunting, splashing]
Olive says, PERFECT.
NOW, JUST ONE MORE ROCK LIKE
THAT, AND WE CAN WALK ACROSS.
They push another large rock to the stream.
[Grunting, splashing]
Elinor says, YAY!
WE BUILT OUR OWN PATH.
Olive says, WELL, LET'S SEE IF IT WORKS.
[Grunting, upbeat music plays]
They hop across the rocks and reach the other side of the stream.
Ari says, WE DID IT!
[Laughing, hands slap]
Elinor says, WE FOUND A WAY JUST
LIKE THE ANTS! NOW, WE CAN GO
EXPLORE THAT TREE!
[Rustling, upbeat music plays]
Ari, Olive and Elinor run in circles around the tree. A bug crawls on to Olive’s trunk.
[Laughing, gasp]
Elinor throws more acorns up to Ari as he juggles some.
Ari says, UH...
[Laughing, whooshing, clattering]
[Laughing, happy sighing, rustling]
Olive says, IT WAS A GREAT IDEA
TO GO TO THAT TREE.
Elinor says, THERE WAS SO MUCH
TO EXPLORE!
THOSE BIG LEAVES MADE IT NICE
AND SHADY, AND I'VE NEVER SEEN
THIS KIND OF NUT BEFORE.
Ari says, HEY, LET'S GO SHOW OUR
FISHY FRIEND WHAT WE FOUND!
[Upbeat music plays, splashing]
Elinor says, OH.
THERE'S A BIG PUDDLE HERE.
I DON'T REMEMBER STEPPING
IN A PUDDLE WHEN WE CAME
ACROSS BEFORE.
Olive suggests, MAYBE WE JUST
STEPPED AROUND IT.
[Birds sing]
Elinor says, HMM... MAYBE.
Ari says, COME ON!
LET'S GO SEE FISHY.
[Grunting]
Ari says, HEY, LITTLE FISHY.
LOOK AT WHAT WE... HUH?
Elinor asks, WHAT'S THE
MATTER, ARI?
Ari says, THERE WAS LOTS OF
WATER IN FISHY'S POOL BEFORE,
BUT NOW, THERE'S HARDLY ANY!
Olive asks, WHAT HAPPENED?
FISHY DOESN'T HAVE A LOT
OF ROOM TO MOVE AROUND IN!
Ari says, THAT CAN'T BE GOOD.
IF THE WATER KEEPS
GETTING LOWER...
[Olive gasps]
Olive says, WE HAVE TO HELP FISHY!
FISHY NEEDS MORE WATER TO
LIVE IN!
Ari says, THE WATER IN FISHY'S
POOL USED TO BE THIS HIGH,
AND NOW, IT'S A LOT LOWER.
Olive says, THE WATER MUST HAVE
GONE SOMEWHERE.
Elinor says, HMM... I THINK I HAVE
AN IDEA.
LET'S GO BACK TO WHERE WE
CROSSED THE STREAM.
COME ON!
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS!
Ari says, BYE AGAIN, FISHY!
WE'LL BE BACK.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, THERE'S LESS WATER
IN FISHY'S POOL, BUT THERE'S
MORE WATER HERE, NEXT TO
THE ROCKS WE MOVED.
[Stream burbles]
Olive says, YOU'RE RIGHT, ELINOR,
BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Ari asks, HEY, DID YOU SEE
THAT TWIG?
Elinor says, I SAW IT.
[Water burbles]
Olive says, HERE COMES
ANOTHER ONE.
Ari says, IT'S GOING AROUND THE
ROCKS AND INTO THAT PUDDLE.
Olive says, SO THE WATER'S MAKING
A PUDDLE HERE INSTEAD OF GOING
DOWN TO FISHY'S POOL.
Elinor says, UH-OH!
WHEN WE PUT THE ROCKS IN THE
STREAM TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE,
WE MADE A WALL THAT STOPS THE
WATER FROM GOING TO FISHY'S POOL!
Olive says, WE NEVER MEANT FOR
THAT TO HAPPEN.
Elinor says, OH, POOR FISHY! ALL
BECAUSE WE WANT TO EXPLORE
THAT TREE.
Ari says, WE HAVE TO FIX IT, OR FISHY
MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY WATER LEFT
TO SWIM IN.
Elinor asks, BUT WHAT CAN WE DO?
Olive says, LET'S PULL THE ROCKS
BACK SO THE WATER CAN GO
THROUGH AGAIN.
[Grunting, splashing, water flows]
Ari says, IT'S WORKING. LET'S MOVE
THE OTHER ONE AWAY.
[Grunting]
Elinor says, YAY! WE UNDID IT.
[Hands slap]
Ari says, LET'S GO SEE IF THERE'S
MORE WATER IN FISHY'S POOL.
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, OKAY.
COME ON, OLIVE.
Olive says, UM, THAT MIGHT BE A
PROBLEM. NOW THAT THE ROCKS
ARE GONE, I CAN'T GET
ACROSS ANYMORE.
Elinor says, UH-OH.
WE CAN'T PUT THE ROCKS BACK.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
Elinor and Ari watch a twig float downstream.
[Water burbles, popping, gentle music plays]
Elinor says, WAIT, I KNOW!
REMEMBER THE ANTS WE SAW
CROSSING OVER THE PUDDLE ON
THE STICK?
MAYBE WE CAN MAKE A BRIDGE
LIKE THE ANTS MADE.
[Scratching, birds chirp]
Olive says, WE HAVE THE ROCKS
ON THE SIDES OF THE STREAM.
WE CAN MAKE A BRIDGE... LIKE THIS.
Ari says, HMM... WHAT ABOUT THE
LOGS WE WERE WALKING ON BEFORE?
ONE OF THOSE MIGHT WORK.
Elinor says, GREAT IDEA, ARI!
LET'S GO!
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive, Elinor and Ari sing,
WE'LL FIND A WAY, FIND A WAY
IF WE TRY AND TRY AGAIN
WE'LL FIND A BETTER WAY.
FIRST WE BUILT A WALL OF ROCKS
BECAUSE WE DIDN'T KNOW
IT WOULD STOP THE STREAM FROM
GOING WHERE IT USED TO GO.
[Stream burbles]
Olive, Elinor and Ari sing,
WE'LL FIND A WAY, FIND A WAY
IF WE TRY AND TRY AGAIN
WE'LL FIND A BETTER WAY.
SO WE BUILT A LITTLE BRIDGE
THAT LETS THE STREAM GO THROUGH
NOW WE GO JUST WHERE WE WANT
AND THE STREAM CAN TOO.
WE FOUND A WAY, FOUND A WAY
WE TRIED AND TRIED AGAIN
AND FOUND A BETTER WAY.
Elinor says, COME ON, OLIVE!
CROSS THE BRIDGE!
[Gasp, laughing]
Olive says, IT WORKS!
Ari and Elinor cheer, YAY!
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari says, LET'S GO TELL FISHY!
HI, FISHY. WE'RE REALLY SORRY
WE TOOK WATER AWAY FROM
YOUR POOL.
[Water burbles]
Olive explains, WE DIDN'T KNOW
THE ROCKS WE MOVED WOULD
STOP THE WATER FROM
GOING THROUGH.
Elinor says, BUT JUST LIKE THE
ANTS, WE DIDN'T GIVE UP, AND
WE FOUND A BETTER WAY.
WE BUILD A BRIDGE. IT'S MUCH
BETTER, BECAUSE IT DOESN'T
STOP THE WATER. RIGHT, FISHY?
[Splashing, upbeat music plays, slide whistle]
Ari says, FISHY SAYS... "RIGHT!"
[Laughing]
Elsewhere, Olive, Ari, and Elinor lie on their stomachs by a river.
Ari says, WOW! THAT FISH IS
SO JUMPY!
Elinor asks, WHERE DID THAT
FISH COME FROM?
Ms. Mole says, THAT FISH IS ON
ITS WAY TO LAY EGGS UP
THE RIVER.
Olvie says, I DIDN'T KNOW FISH
COULD LAY EGGS.
Ms. Mole says, THEY SURE CAN.
MAMA FISH HAS TO FIND A SAFER
SPOT WHERE THE WATER MOVES
MUCH MORE SLOWLY.
LET'S HAVE A LOOK.
SOME FISH, LIKE SALMON, START
LIFE AS TINY EGGS.
IN THE SPRING, AFTER MANY WEEKS,
THE BABY FISH HATCH FROM
THEIR EGGS.
Ari, Elinor, and Olive say, AW!
[Book pages turn, water burbles]
Ms. Mole says, THE BABY FISH ARE
CARRIED DOWN THE RIVER,
PUSHED BY THE WATER.
LITTLE BABY FISH GO DOWN THE
RIVER AND EVENTUALLY GO OUT
TO SEA TO GROW BIGGER
AND STRONGER.
IT'S SO STRONG THAT NOW, IT CAN
SWIM UP THE RIVER WHEN IT'S
TIME TO LAY EGGS.
[Splashing]
Elinor says, BUT MS. MOLE, THERE'S
SOMETHING BLOCKING THE WAY.
HOW CAN THE FISH SWIM UP THE
RIVER NOW?
Ms. Mole says, GOOD OBSERVATION.
SOMEONE BUILT A DAM. FISH CAN
JUMP VERY HIGH, BUT NOT
THAT HIGH.
LUCKILY, WHOEVER BUILT THE DAM
BUILT A FISH LADDER, TOO.
IT CAN JUMP UP EACH STEP IN THE
LADDER TO GET OVER THE DAM AND
BACK TO THE SAME CALM POOL
WHERE IT WAS BORN.
[Laughing, splashing]
Elinor says, OUR FISH MADE IT, TOO.
WELCOME HOME, FISHY FRIEND.
Blue text reads, “Thinking About Blinking.”
Elinor says, “THINKING ABOUT BLINKING.”
Elinor skips to a school and opens a door.
[Humming, door creaks]
Elinor says, HUH? HMM... WHERE
IS EVERYBODY? HMM...
[Door slams, slide whistle]
Olive says, HI, ELINOR.
Elinor says, WHOA!
YOU STARTLED ME, OLIVE.
[Laughing]
Olive says, SORRY, BUT YOU'VE
GOT TO COME QUICK. YOU
SHOULD SEE THIS!
[Upbeat music plays]
Camilla Camel speaks through a rolled up piece of paper.
Camilla says, COME ONE, COME
ALL! WELCOME, EVERYONE,
TO TODAY'S STARING CONTEST!
[Cheering]
Elinor asks, WHAT'S A
STARING CONTEST?
Olive explains, A STARING CONTEST
IS WHEN TWO PLAYERS STARE INTO
EACH OTHER'S EYES UNTIL ONE OF
THEM BLINKS, LIKE THIS.
THE ONE WHO DOES NOT BLINK
WINS THE CONTEST.
[Slide whistle]
Elinor says, OH!
[Upbeat music plays]
Camilla says, INTRODUCING YOUR
CURRENT CHAMPION.
HE HAS BROWN HAIR AND
THE LONGEST STARE. KOA!
[Koa chuckles, cheering]
Camilla says, PLAYING WITH HIM
TODAY, THE BAT WITH ALL
THAT, ARI!
[Cheering]
Ari says, I'LL WIN THIS THING IN
THE BLINK OF AN EYE.
[Laughing]
Camilla says, REMEMBER, WHOEVER
CAN GO THE LONGEST WITHOUT
BLINKING WINS.
READY? AND... GO!
[Tense music plays]
Koa stares at Ari until his eyes water.
[Tear drips]
Koa says, HUH?
[Cheering]
Ari smiles and says, GOOD GAME,
KOA. GOOD GAME.
Koa rides down a slide.
[Fists tap, upbeat music plays, scraping]
Koa says, WHOA!
Ari slides and says, YAY!
[Cheering, flapping]
Ari asks, ANYONE ELSE WANT
TO HAVE A STARING CONTEST?
Ari faces his classmates in staring contests.
[Dings, slide whistle]
Ari cheers, YAY! AH!
One of the goat twins says, BAH!
Ari says, YES!
Ari stares at Ms. Mole through a window as she washes the glass.
[Squeaking]
Ms. Mole says, HUH?
Ari cheers, WHOO-HOO!
WHO'S THE BEST AT NOT
BLINKING THEIR EYES?
I... AM. GET IT? EYE?
WHOO, WHOO!
[Cheering]
Elinor says, ARI IS SO GOOD
AT NOT BLINKING.
Olive says, YEAH, HE'S THE NOT
BLINKING KING.
Olive says, HMM... BUT I WONDER,
WHY DO WE HAVE TO BLINK?
Olive says, HUH?
WHY DO WE HAVE TO BLINK?
HMM... I'VE NEVER THOUGHT
ABOUT IT BEFORE.
MY EYES CLOSE WHEN I SLEEP.
MAYBE BLINKING IS HOW OUR
EYES TRY TO GO TO BED.
Olive imagines blinking as she lies on her bed at night.
[Popping, crickets chirp]
Elinor says, BUT NONE OF
THE KIDS IN THE CONTEST
SEEM SLEEPY.
MAYBE IT'S OUR EYES CLAPPING
BECAUSE THEY LIKE WHAT T
HEY SEE.
[Clap, laughing]
Olive says, NO, THAT CAN'T BE IT.
I DON'T HEAR ANY CLAPPING WHEN
I BLINK.
Elinor says, YOU'RE RIGHT.
HMM... I KNOW.
WE NEED MORE OBSERVATIONS.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, OKAY, I'LL WATCH
YOU AND SEE IF YOU BLINK.
[Tense music plays, ding]
Elinor says, YOU JUST DID IT.
[Ding]
Olive asks, I DID?
YOU JUST BLINKED, TOO.
Elinor says, REALLY?
BUT I WASN'T EVEN THINKING
ABOUT BLINKING.
Olive says, I GUESS WE BLINK
WITHOUT EVEN NOTICING.
MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING OUR
BODY DOES ALL BY ITSELF.
Elinor says, WHOA!
LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS
WHEN WE TRY NOT TO BLINK.
[Grunting, tense music plays, buzzing, ding]
Elinor says, WOW.
IT'S REALLY HARD NOT TO BLINK.
MY EYES START TO WATER AND
FEEL TIRED.
Olive says, YEAH, IT MUST BE
SOMETHING OUR BODIES HAVE
TO DO.
Elinor asks, BUT WHY?
IT'S A MYSTERY!
Elinor rubs her hands together.
Olive says, IT'S A BLINKING MYSTERY.
[Triumphant music plays]
Ari cheers, WHOO-HOO!
THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER!
I'M THE BEST STARE-ER IN
THE WORLD!
WHAT YOU DOING?
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, WE'RE TRYING
TO LEARN EVERYTHING WE
CAN ABOUT BLINKING.
Olive says, SO FAR, WE'VE
LEARNED THAT YOU BLINK
WITHOUT THINKING AND
THAT IT'S REALLY HARD
NOT TO BLINK.
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari says, COOL!
THIS IS AN AWESOME IDEA.
IF I CAN KNOW MORE ABOUT
BLINKING, I CAN WIN EVEN
MORE STARING CONTESTS.
WHOO-HOO! LET'S GO LEARN
MORE ABOUT BLINKING.
[Flapping, upbeat music plays]
Ari, Olive and Elinor walk beside a stream.
[Rustling]
Olive smiles and says, LOOK,
ARI. I THINK SOMEONE'S
FOLLOWING YOU.
Elinor says, A FISH! OH, HE'S
SO CUTE.
[Pop]
Ari says, WELL, BUBBLE BACK
TO YOU, TOO, FISHY FISH.
AH, YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN
ME TODAY.
I WAS SO GOOD AT STARING.
Olive says, HEY, ARI, I THINK
IT LIKES YOU.
[Splash, background laughter]
Ari says, HMM... CAN YOU
FOLLOW...THIS?
Ari marches in a circle.
[Grunting, rustling, upbeat music plays, splash]
Elinor says, HEY, FISHY FISH,
YOU HAVEN'T BLINKED ONCE
SINCE WE MET YOU.
Ari says, YOU'RE RIGHT.
FISHY FISH, YOU'RE THE PERFECT
PLAYER TO HAVE A STARING
CONTEST WITH.
Olive says, I DON'T KNOW, ARI.
THAT FISH SEEMS REALLY
GOOD AT NOT BLINKING.
Ari says, MEH. I COULD BEAT IT
WITH MY EYES CLOSED.
Olive says, BUT YOUR EYES NEED
TO BE OPEN.
Ari says, OH. THAT'S FINE.
THIS CONTEST IS GOING TO BE
SO AWESOME, YOU WON'T BE
ABLE TO CLOSE YOUR EYES.
[Upbeat music plays]
Olive says, UM, YOU'RE NOT
SUPPOSED TO CLOSE YOUR
EYES IN A STARING CONTEST.
Ari says, HUH. OH, YEAH.
NEVER MIND.
LET THE CONTEST... BEGIN.
Ari stares at the fish.
[Bubbling, ding, gasp]
Ari says, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
[Splash]
Elinor says, WOW! THAT FISH
DOESN'T BLINK AT ALL.
Ari says, ALRIGHT, REMATCH.
LET'S HAVE ANOTHER
STARING CONTEST.
Elinor and Olive notices Ms. Mole walking across a small bridge.
[Whistling, footsteps, gasp]
Elinor says, HI, MS. MOLE.
Ms. Mole says, HI, ELINOR.
HI, OLIVE. HI, ARI.
HI, UM, STARING FISH.
THAT'S BETTER.
[Splash]
Elinor asks, WHAT YOU DOING,
MS. MOLE?
Ms. Mole says, I WAS CLEANING
THE SCHOOL WINDOWS, BUT
MY SPONGES GOT DRY. AND
I CAN'T CLEAN WITH
DRY SPONGES.
Elinor asks, HMM... HOW DID THEY
GET DRY, MS. MOLE?
Ms. Mole says, I LEFT THEM OUT
TOO LONG. WET THINGS GET DRY
IF YOU LEAVE THEM OUT IN
THE OPEN.
WHAT ARE YOU KIDS UP TO?
Olive says, ARI'S IN A STARING
CONTEST WITH THIS FISH.
[Grunting]
Ari says, I CAN'T KEEP MY
EYES OPEN!
I HAVE TO BLINK!
[Ding]
Ari says, YOU WIN, FISHY FISH.
YOU'RE... THE CHAMPION.
I TRIED REALLY HARD TO KEEP
FROM BLINKING.
BUT THEN MY EYES FELT SCRATCHY,
LIKE THEY WERE, I GUESS, DRY OR
SOMETHING. AND THEN... I BLINKED.
[Splashing]
Elinor says, HMM... DRY.
[Squishing, gasping]
Elinor says, MAYBE THAT'S IT!
Ari says, YOU THINK I NEED A
SPONGE TO WIN?
[Elinor laughs, gentle music plays]
Elinor says, NO, MAYBE OUR EYES
DRY OUT BECAUSE WE LEAVE
THEM OPEN.
JUST LIKE MS. MOLE'S SPONGES
GOT DRY WHEN SHE LEFT THEM
OUT. BUT WHEN WE CLOSE OUR
EYES, WE KEEP THEM WET.
[Slide whistle]
Ari says, HMM... I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT.
WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES OR BLINK,
IT MAKES THEM FEEL WETTER
AND BETTER!
[Sigh]
Elinor says, THAT'S WHY WE BLINK!
TO KEEP OUR EYES WET.
Ari says, AND THE LONGER WE
DON'T BLINK, THE MORE DRY
OUR EYES GET.
Olive says, HMM... I WONDER IF
THAT'S WHY THE FISH DOESN'T
HAVE TO BLINK.
Elinor says, YEAH, HIS EYES ARE
ALWAYS IN THE WATER, SO THEY
CAN'T GET DRY.
THEY'RE ALWAYS WET.
Ms. Mole says, OH, MY LITTLE
SCIENTISTS HAVE DONE IT AGAIN.
GREAT OBSERVATION, KIDS.
WE BLINK TO KEEP OUR EYES
FROM GETTING TOO DRY.
THAT'S WHY FISH DON'T NEED
TO BLINK. THEY'RE ALWAYS IN
THE WATER.
IN FACT, MOST FISH, LIKE THIS
ONE HERE, DON'T EVEN HAVE
EYELIDS. THEY DON'T NEED THEM!
Elinor says, WHOA.
Olive says, COOL.
Ari says, I KNEW SOMETHING
WAS FISHY ABOUT THAT FISH.
NO WONDER YOU WON. YOU
DON'T EVEN HAVE EYELIDS
TO BLINK.
Ms. Mole says, OUR BODIES DO A
LOT OF THINGS WITHOUT YOU
HAVING TO THINK ABOUT IT,
LIKE BREATHING OR BLINKING.
IT'S JUST YOUR BODY'S WAY OF
MAKING SURE IT STAYS SAFE
AND HEALTHY.
Ari says, SO OUR BODIES ARE
THE REAL CHAMPIONS.
Elinor says, WE DID IT!
WE SOLVED THE MYSTERY!
Ari says, YEAH!
Olive cheers, WHOO-HOO!
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor, Olive and Ari sing,
Ari sings, DID YOU KNOW YOU'RE
ALWAYS BLINKING?
Elinor sings, YOU DO IT
WITHOUT THINKING.
Olive sings, TAKE A MINUTE
LET THAT SINK IN.
Elinor sings, WOW, IT'S JUST
SO INTERESTING.
Ari sings, BLINKING IN YOUR BEDROOM.
Elinor sings, BLINKING DURING CLASS .
BLINKING WHEN IT'S PLAYTIME.
Olive sings, OR WHEN YOU'RE
ROLLING IN THE GRASS.
Ari sings, IT'S EASIER TO SEE WHEN
YOUR EYES ARE NICE AND WET,
YOUR BODY DOES IT JUST SO YOU
DON'T FORGET.
[Splashing]
Ari sings underwater, YOU DON'T
WANT THEM TO GET DRY.
BLINKING IS BATH TIME
FOR YOUR EYES.
Elinor sings, SO YOU SEE YOU'RE
ALWAYS BLINKING.
Ari sings, YOU DO IT WITHOUT THINKING.
Olive sings, TAKE A MINUTE
LET THAT SINK IN.
Elinor sings, WOW, THAT IS
SO INTERESTING.
[Ari cheers]
Ari says, WELL, I GUESS YOU CAN'T
KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOREVER,
UNLESS YOU'RE A FISH.
Ms. Mole says, THAT'S RIGHT.
YOU DON'T WANT YOUR EYES
TO GET ALL DRY LIKE MY SPONGES.
Olive asks, DOES THIS MEAN YOU'RE
GOING TO QUIT STARING
CONTESTS, ARI?
Ari says, NOT YET. I STILL HAVE TO
BEAT FISHY FISH.
Elinor asks, HOW ARE YOU GOING
TO DO THAT?
[Bird sings, water burbles]
Ari says, I HAVE AN IDEA.
OLIVE, MAY I HAVE SOME PAPER
AND A CRAYON?
Ari smiles as he draws in Olive’s green notebook.
[Scratching]
Ari turns the notebook and shows Elinor, Olive and Ms. Mole a drawing of himself.
Ari says, TA-DA!
Elinor says, WOW.
[Paper tears, water burbles, upbeat music plays]
Ari uses a rock to hang his drawing over the side of the bridge. The fish swims over and looks at it.
Elinor says, I GOT A FEELING
HE'S GOING TO BE THERE FOR
A LONG TIME.
[Laughing, water bubbles]
[Upbeat music plays]
