Transcript: Burrowing Owl Girl / Olive's Tree
Elinor, a white rabbit with long straight dark brown hair, wears a red and purple dress. She runs on a dirt path and stops to look at a monarch butterfly perched on a grey rock.
[Happy music plays]
Elinor sings, WHEREVER I GO
I SEE THINGS THAT I WANT
TO KNOW,
WHEREVER I AM I FIND THINGS
I WANT TO UNDERSTAND.
GO AND EXPLORE, LISTEN AND SEE
JUST FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
Elinor smiles as she sings on a swing on a swing set. Olive Elephant swings on a swing beside her. Olive wears a blue bow on her head, with a blue shirt, skirts and leggings. Ari Bat hands upside down from the bar on the top of the swing set.
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, WHY DO BIRDS SING?
AND HOW DO THEY FLY?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor watches ants through a magnifying glass.
Elinor sings WHY DO ANTS MARCH?
AND WHERE DO THEY HIDE?
THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
WHEREVER YOU TURN
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
AND FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
[Chiming]
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, ASK A QUESTION
WHAT WILL YOU FIND?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, JUST LISTEN AND SEE
COME AND WONDER WITH ME.
Text above Elinor reads, “Elinor Wonders Why.” A magnifying glass with pink bunny ears replaces the letter ‘O’ in Elinor’s name.
Blue text reads, “Burrowing Owl Girl.”
Elinor reads, BURROWING OWL GIRL.
Bibi, Elinor’s grandmother, waters a cactus in a pot on a table in her living room. She wears an orange open shirt over a yellow shirt.
[Water pours, doorbell rings, gentle music plays, door creaks]
Mr. Rabbit asks, DID ANYONE
ORDER A RABBIT FAMILY?
[Giggling]
Bibi says, AH, COME HERE YOU!
OOH, MY FAVOURITE SON!
Mr. Rabbit says, YOUR FAVOURITE?
UH, MOM.
[Wobbling noise, giggling]
Mr. Rabbit continues, I'M YOUR ONLY SON.
Bibi says, WELL, IT'S A GOOD THING
YOU'RE MY FAVOURITE THEN.
[They laugh]
Bibi says, AND MY FAVOURITE
DAUGHTER-IN-LAW, SO GOOD TO SEE
YOU, DEAR.
[Kiss]
Ranger Rabbit says, YOU TOO, BIBI.
Bibi asks, WHERE'S ELINOR?
Ranger Rabbit says, I DON'T KNOW,
BUT GUESS WHO HAS A SPECIAL
SURPRISE FOR YOU.
Elinor runs between her parents. She wears a brown owl costume with her white ears poking up through the top.
Elinor shouts, SURPRISE!
[Elinor hoots, harmonica music plays]
Bibi says, OH, WOW! AN OWL!
I'VE NEVER HAD AN OWL VISIT
ME BEFORE.
Elinor says, BIBI, IT'S ME!
Bibi says, ELINOR! I THOUGHT
YOU WERE A REAL OWL.
[Elinor giggles]
Elinor asks, DO YOU LIKE MY OWL COSTUME?
I MADE IT FOR COSTUME DAY AT SCHOOL.
MOM HELPED A LITTLE.
Ranger Rabbit says, YES, AND SINCE
THEN SHE'S BEEN WEARING IT A LOT.
Elinor says, EVERY DAY! OWLS ARE
SOME OF MY FAVOURITE ANIMALS.
Bibi says, REALLY?
I LOVE OWLS, TOO.
[Gentle music plays]
Bibi and Elinor say, THEY'RE SO INTERESTING!
Ranger Rabbit says, WELL, WE'RE HELPING
YOUR GRANDPA TODAY, HONEY BUNNY,
AND THAT MEANS YOU'RE GOING TO
STAY WITH BIBI FOR THE AFTERNOON.
Elinor says, AWESOME, I CAN'T WAIT
TO TELL YOU ALL ABOUT OWLS, BIBI.
I KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS
TO KNOW ABOUT THEM!
Bibi asks, EVERYTHING?
Elinor says, YEP.
Bibi says, WELL, I WOULDN'T BE
SO SURE OF THAT, ELINOR.
NATURE ALWAYS SEEMS TO FIND
A WAY TO SURPRISE YOU.
Elinor runs in circles around the living room.
[Upbeat music plays]
She says, WATCH ME!
[Elinor hoots, adults chuckle]
Bibi says, OH, DEAR.
[Elinor hoots]
Later, Elinor runs in circles on sand as Bibi sits at a planting table outside.
Elinor asks, WHATCHA DOIN', BIBI?
Bibi says, A LITTLE INVESTIGATION.
I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH
TYPE OF SAND MY CACTUSES LIKE
THE BEST.
Elinor says, COOL!
WELL, I DID A LOT OF INVESTIGATING
ABOUT OWLS WITH MY MOM, AND
THAT'S HOW I KNOW ALL ABOUT THEM.
In a thought bubble over Elinor’s head, an owl perches on a branch.
[Popping]
Elinor says, OWLS SLEEP ALL DAY, AND
THEY'RE ONLY AWAKE AT NIGHT.
THEY'RE SUPER GOOD AT FLYING--
[Owl hoots, crickets chirp, gentle music plays]
Elinor continues, --AND THEY LIVE
WAY UP IN THE TREES.
I OBSERVED THEM MYSELF!
[Whoosh]
Bibi says, THAT'S WONDERFUL, OWL
GIRL ELINOR, BUT JUST REMEMBER,
A GOOD SCIENTIST KNOWS THERE'S
ALWAYS MORE TO FIND OUT, SO KEEP
ASKING QUESTIONS.
Elinor says, AND THAT MEANS MAKE
LOTS AND LOTS OF OBSERVATIONS!
Bibi says, EXACTLY!
[Elinor hoots, whooshing, chirping, humming]
[Rustling]
Elinor approaches a patch of tall grass.
Elinor asks, WHAT'S THAT?
TWO EYES?
[Gasp]
Elinor says, IT'S AN OWL!
HELLO, LITTLE OWL.
LOOK AT ME, I'M AN OWL TOO.
[Elinor hoots, owl hoots]
Elinor says, WAIT A MINUTE,
IT'S THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY.
WHY ARE YOU AWAKE, LITTLE OWL?
YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE SLEEPING
RIGHT NOW, SO YOU CAN BE AWAKE
AT NIGHT. THAT'S WHAT OWLS DO!
The small owl runs to another patch of grass. Elinor follows it.
[Hoot, gasp, rustling, upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, I WONDER WHY THIS
OWL ISN'T SLEEPING.
[Hoot, upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, HUH?
NOW IT'S RUNNING ON THE GROUND?
BUT OWLS ARE SUPPOSED TO FLY IN
THE SKY. IS THAT EVEN AN OWL?
BIBI, BIBI!
I JUST SAW AN IMPOSSIBLE ANIMAL!
Bibi says, A WHAT?
Elinor says, AN ANIMAL THAT CAN'T BE!
IT LOOKS LIKE AN ANIMAL THAT I
KNOW, BUT IT'S NOT DOING THE
THINGS IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO!
Bibi says, AN IMPOSSIBLE ANIMAL?
THAT IS SO INTERESTING.
Elinor says, I DON'T UNDERSTAND!
Bibi says, WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT
A SCIENTIST DOES WHEN SHE SEES
SOMETHING SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND.
Elinor says, YES, SHE NEEDS--
Elinor and Bibi say, MORE OBSERVATIONS!
Elinor says, COME ON, BIBI!
[Crunching footsteps in sand]
Elinor leads Bibi to the small owl.
[Owl hoots, gentle music plays]
Elinor says, THERE IT IS!
THAT'S THE ANIMAL I SAW EARLIER.
IT LOOKS LIKE AN OWL, BUT IT
CAN'T BE AN OWL.
THIS BIRD IS AWAKE DURING THE
DAY AND OWLS ARE ONLY AWAKE
AT NIGHT.
Bibi says, I SEE.
[Hooting]
Elinor whispers, IT'S COMING CLOSER.
Bibi says, AW, IT'S PRETTY CUTE.
Elinor says, BIBI, LOOK, IT'S RUNNING
AWAY! LET'S FOLLOW IT SO WE CAN
KEEP OBSERVING.
Bibi and Elinor follow the owl. It runs behind them as they look for it. They follow it again as it jumps into a small hole.
[Crunching footsteps, upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, BIBI, THE LITTLE BIRD
WENT INTO THAT HOLE IN THE GROUND.
DO YOU THINK THAT'S WHERE IT LIVES?
Bibi says, WELL, IT SURE LOOKS LIKE IT.
HOLES IN THE GROUND LIKE THAT
ARE CALLED BURROWS.
Elinor says, WOW, THEN IT'S DEFINITELY
NOT AN OWL, BECAUSE OWLS LIVE
IN TREES.
[Elinor gasps, gentle music plays]
Elinor says, ONLY IT REALLY DOES
LOOK LIKE AN OWL.
IT'S GOT BIG EYES, AND A BEAK,
AND FEATHERS.
Bibi says, THIS IS TRUE.
Elinor asks, BUT HOW CAN IT BE
AN OWL IF IT'S AWAKE DURING
THE DAY, RUNS ON THE GROUND,
AND LIVES IN A HOLE?
Bibi says, THAT'S A REALLY GOOD
QUESTION, ELINOR.
Elinor says, I JUST DON'T GET IT.
Bibi says, OH, LOOK, JUST WHAT I WAS
LOOKING FOR.
I FOUND ANOTHER CACTUS FOR MY
INVESTIGATION. ISN'T IT A BEAUTY?
Bibi says, UM, ARE YOU SURE THAT'S
A CACTUS, BIBI?
IT DOESN'T LOOK ANYTHING LIKE
YOUR OTHER CACTUSES.
[Gentle music plays]
Bibi says, GOOD OBSERVATION,
BUT THIS IS A CACTUS.
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT KINDS
OF CACTUSES, AND THEY'RE NOT ALL
THE SAME.
NATURE IS FULL OF THINGS THAT
LOOK SIMILAR AT FIRST, BUT WHEN
YOU LOOK MORE CLOSELY THERE ARE
DIFFERENCES LIKE THOSE TWO ROCKS.
Elinor says, OH, I SEE, ONE HAS A STRIPE.
Bibi says, BUT THEY ARE BOTH ROCKS.
Elinor looks at the little owl.
Elinor says, OOH.
[Hooting]
Elinor says, MAYBE THIS ANIMAL
IS AN OWL, BUT IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT
KIND OF OWL.
Bibi says, AS A MATTER FACT, IT IS.
GOOD THINKING, LITTLE SCIENTIST.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT KINDS OF
OWLS, JUST LIKE THERE ARE
DIFFERENT KINDS OF CACTUSES
AND DIFFERENT KINDS OF ROCKS.
THIS ONE HERE IS CALLED A
BURROWING OWL.
Elinor says, OH, I KNOW, IS IT
BECAUSE THEY LIVE IN BURROWS?
Bibi says, THAT'S RIGHT.
BURROWING OWLS LIVE IN THE
DESERT AND STAY AWAKE DURING
THE DAY, AND GUESS WHAT ELSE?
THEY DON'T MAKE THE HOLES THEY
LIVE IN. THEY USE THE HOLES THAT
OTHER ANIMALS MADE AND DON'T
NEED ANYMORE.
Elinor says, AW, WHAT A SMART LITTLE OWL.
[Gentle hoots]
Elinor says, I THOUGHT I KNEW
EVERYTHING THERE WAS TO KNOW
ABOUT OWLS, BUT I GUESS I DIDN'T.
Bibi says, WELL, NATURE IS FULL OF
SURPRISES, ELINOR. THERE'S ALWAYS
MORE TO LEARN.
[Hooting]
The owl moves twigs and rocks around the burrow.
Elinor asks, WHAT'S IT DOING NOW?
Bibi says, I DON'T KNOW.
I'VE NEVER SEEN A BURROWING
OWL DO THAT. I WONDER WHY.
Elinor says, MAYBE IT'S DECORATING
ITS FRONT DOOR.
Bibi suggests, MAYBE, OR MAYBE
THAT'S ITS ROCK COLLECTION.
[Both laugh]
A turtle walks towards the burrow.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, IT KINDA LOOKS LIKE IT'S
MAKING A LITTLE FENCE.
LOOK, THAT TURTLE WAS GOING
TO WALK INTO THE HOLE--
[Gasp]
Elinor says, --BUT IT GOT STOPPED
BY THE STICKS AND ROCKS.
MAYBE THE OWL PUT THEM THERE
TO KEEP OTHER ANIMALS OUT.
Bibi says, I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT ELINOR.
[Gasp]
Bibi says, THAT'S AMAZING. I DID NOT
KNOW BURROWING OWLS DID THAT.
Elinor says, YOU DIDN'T? REALLY?
Bibi says, NOPE!
Elinor says, I GUESS THERE IS ALWAYS
MORE TO LEARN, EVEN FOR MY BIBI!
[Bibi laughs]
Bibi says, OH, DEAR.
[Cheerful music plays]
Elinor and Bibi dance.
Elinor and Bibi sing, NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES
THE CLOSER YOU LOOK,
THE MORE YOU WILL SEE
ANIMALS ARE ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.
NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.
[Whoosh]
Elinor sings, I THOUGHT THERE WAS
ONLY ONE KIND OF OWL,
THAT SLEEPS ALL DAY AND FLIES ABOUT.
[Hooting]
Bibi sings, KEEP YOUR MIND OPEN,
AND LOOK ALL AROUND,
Elinor sings, YOU MIGHT FIND AN OWL
THAT RUNS ON THE GROUND.
They sing, NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.
THE CLOSER YOU LOOK,
THE MORE YOU WILL SEE.
[Ribbit, quacking, chirping]
Elinor and Bibi sing, ANIMALS ARE ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.
NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.
Later, Bibi puts a cushion on top of a pile of cushions in her living room.
[Gentle music plays, doorbell rings, door creaks]
Mr. Rabbit says, WE'RE BACK!
Bibi says, AW, MY FAVOURITE
RABBIT FAMILY.
[Kissing]
Ranger Rabbit says, SO, DID YOU
AND ELINOR HAVE FUN TODAY?
Bibi says, OF COURSE!
WE MADE LOTS OF OBSERVATIONS.
IT WAS ALL SO INTERESTING.
Ranger Rabbit says, HM, WHERE IS ELINOR ANYWAY?
Bibi says, OH, I'M NOT SURE.
SHE WAS AROUND HERE SOME PLACE.
Elinor pops out of the pile of cushions.
Elinor shouts, SURPRISE!
[Bibi, Mr. Rabbit and Ranger Rabbit laugh]
[Elinor hoots]
Elinor asks, DO YOU LIKE MY BURROW?
Mr. Rabbit repeats, YOUR BURROW?
I DIDN'T KNOW OWLS HAD BURROWS.
Elinor says, NEITHER DID I, BUT THEN BIBI
AND I MET A SPECIAL KIND OF OWL.
IT'S AWAKE DURING THE DAY, RUNS ON
THE GROUND, AND LIVES IN A BURROW!
Mr. Rabbit says, REALLY!?
Elinor exclaims, IT'S AMAZING, ISN'T IT?
NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.
Mr. Rabbit says, THAT'S RIGHT!
Elinor says, I'M A BURROWING OWL GIRL!
[Laughing, Elinor hoots, gentle music plays]
Elinor, Olive and Ari stand in front of Elinor’s grandparents house.
Ari groans, I'M THIRSTY.
Olive says, IT'S SO DRY OUT HERE
IN THE HOT DESERT.
Elinor says, HM, I WONDER IF THERE ARE
ANY ANIMALS THAT CAN LIVE OUT HERE.
Señor Tapir jumps out from behind a cactus. He holds his acoustic guitar.
Señor Tapir says, HEY, KIDS, THAT'S
A GREAT QUESTION!
Olive, Elinor and Ari shout, SEÑOR TAPIR!
Señor Tapir says, THERE'S NOT MUCH
WATER HERE, AND THAT REMINDS ME
OF A SCIENTIST WHO WONDERED WHAT
KIND OF LIFE SURVIVES IN A DESERT.
[Happy music plays]
Roseli, a brown calugo, wears a grey blazer and light green shirt with blue pants.
Señor Tapir sings, OH, OH, ROSELI OCAMPO
WANTED TO KNOW ALL THE PLACES
WHERE LIFE COULD GROW.
WELL, ALL LIFE IS ALIVE
IT NEEDS WATER TO SURVIVE,
RAIN DROPS WATER FROM THE SKY,
BUT IN THE DESERT IT'S VERY DRY.
ROSELI IN THE DESERT
SAW LIFE ALL AROUND,
SHE WAS AMAZED AT
THE CREATURES THAT SHE FOUND.
OH, OH, ROSELI OCAMPO
WANTED TO KNOW IF THINGS COULD
LIVE IN THE DESERT COLD
ROSELI LOOKED EVERYWHERE
AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
SHE FOUND LIFE EVEN THERE
Roseli examines a chunk of rock.
[Clink]
Señor Tapir sings, OH, OH ROSELI OCAMPO.
NOW SHE KNOWS,
LIFE CAN LIVE IN THE DESERT COLD.
[Señor Tapir shivers, children cheer]
Blue text reads, “Olive’s Tree.”
Elinor reads, OLIVE’S TREE.
Elinor and Ari follow Olive past trees and a large rock.
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari asks, ARE WE THERE YET?
[Olive giggles]
Olive says, NO.
[Birds chirp]
Ari asks, IS THAT IT?
Olive says, NOPE.
Ari asks, WHAT ABOUT THAT ONE?
Olive says, SORRY.
Olive and Elinor climb over a big rock. Ari flies to the top and stands on it.
[Elinor grunts]
Ari asks, IS THIS THE PLACE?
Olive replies, WE'RE ALMOST THERE,
ARI. YOU'LL SEE, IT'S THE BEST SPOT
IN THE WHOLE FOREST. FOLLOW ME!
[Panting]
Olive, Elinor and Ari run up a dirt path on a hill towards a large, leafy tree.
Olive says, OVER HERE!
[Panting]
Elinor says, WHOA!
Olive says, WELCOME TO MY TREE!
Elinor says, OH, OLIVE, IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!
Ari says, THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING
TREE I'VE EVER SEEN.
In a thought bubble over Olive’s head, she and her mother walk to the tree.
[Whoosh, gentle music plays]
Olive says, YEAH, IT'S PRETTY SPECIAL.
MY MOM AND I COME HERE ALL THE
TIME, AND SHE USED TO COME HERE
WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE, JUST LIKE ME.
Elinor says, WOW, THIS TREE MUST
BE REALLY OLD.
Olive says, YEP, AND IT'S THE BEST
PLACE IN THE WORLD FOR PLAYING,
CLIMBING, NAPPING, OH, AND PICNICKING.
Ari asks, DID SOMEONE SAY PICNICKING?
[Smacking lips, children giggle]
Elinor asks, WHAT SHOULD WE DO
FIRST, OLIVE?
Olive says, ANYTHING WE WANT!
Olive, Ari and Elinor roll down the hill.
[Exclaiming, giggling]
Elinor leapfrogs over Ari.
[Cheering]
The children run in circles around the tree trunk.
[Everyone giggles]
Ari shouts, BOO!
They run in the opposite direction around the tree.
[Laughter]
Later, Ari hangs upside down from a tree branch. Olive sits leaning against the tree. Elinor lies on her stomach looking down the hill.
[Birds chirp, bugs chitter, gentle music plays]
Ari asks, WHATCHA DOING NOW, OLIVE?
Olive says, DRAWING A PICTURE OF
MY SPECIAL TREE. I DRAW A NEW
ONE EVERY TIME I COME UP HERE.
I'VE BEEN HERE SO MANY TIMES
I'VE ALMOST FILLED UP THIS
WHOLE BOOK!
[Pages flip]
Ari says, COOL, I WANNA SEE! OW!
Ari lands on the ground. An acorn falls on his head and bounces off.
[Whoosh]
Elinor asks, ARE YOU OKAY ARI?
Ari says, YEAH, BUT SOMETHING HIT ME.
Elinor says, IT FELL OFF THE TREE.
Ari asks, IS THE TREE MAD AT ME?
Olive says, NO, IT'S JUST DROPPING
A SEED ON THE GROUND.
Ari says, TREES HAVE SEEDS?
Olive says, UH-HUH, MY MOM TOLD
ME ACORNS LIKE THIS ONE ARE OAK
TREE SEEDS AND THIS IS AN OAK TREE.
Elinor says, WOW, OLIVE, YOU SURE
KNOW A LOT ABOUT TREES.
Olive says, YEAH, MY MOM AND I REALLY
LOVE TREES.
Ari says, ME, TOO!
[Crunching]
Olive says, WAIT, ARI, DON'T SIT
THERE, YOU'LL SMOOSH THAT TREE!
[Gasp]
Ari asks, ARE YOU SURE THAT'S A TREE?
IT LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE WEED TO ME.
Olive says, NOPE, THAT'S WHAT A TREE
LOOKS LIKE WHEN IT FIRST COMES
OUT OF THE SEED. HERE, TAKE A LOOK.
Olive holds her purple magnifying glass beside the small tree.
Elinor asks, SO, THIS LITTLE PLANT
IS A BABY TREE?
Olive says, YEP, MY MOM SAID TREES
START OUT AS LITTLE SEEDS, THEN
THEY BECOME LITTLE SPROUTS LIKE
THIS ONE, AND FINALLY, BIG GROWN-UP
TREES LIKE THIS!
Ari says, WOW, IT'S SO NEAT TO THINK
THAT THIS GIANT TREE CAME FROM
A TEENY-TINY ACORN.
Ari flies up and grabs a branch. He swings on it and it breaks.
[Upbeat music plays, Ari grunts, creak, Ari screams]
Elinor says, OH, NO, ARE YOU OKAY, ARI?
Ari says, YEAH, I'M FINE.
Olive says, I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED
TO THE BRANCH.
Ari says, I DON'T KNOW.
IT JUST, YOU KNOW, BROKE.
Olive says, AW, POOR TREE.
Elinor says, DON'T WORRY, OLIVE,
YOUR TREE HAS LOTS OF BRANCHES.
Olive says, YEAH, I GUESS YOU'RE RIGHT.
AND THIS BRANCH LOOKS KINDA
DIFFERENT ANYWAY, BUT I'VE BEEN
A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT THE TREE
LATELY. THE BARK IS GETTING CRUMBLY
AND FALLING OFF IN SPOTS.
[Rustling, crumbling]
Elinor says, I'M SURE IT'S OK.
WE CAN COME CHECK THE TREE SOME
OTHER DAY.
Wind blows leaves past Ari.
[Wind blows, Ari gasps]
Ari says, IT'S GETTING WINDY.
WE SHOULD PROBABLY HEAD HOME.
Elinor says, I THINK IT'S ALMOST
TIME FOR DINNER.
Ari says, DID YOU SAY DINNER?
LET'S GO!
[Ari and Elinor giggle, upbeat music plays]
Elinor and Ari run down the hill. Olive pauses beside the tree.
Olive says, SEE YOU LATER, TREE!
Another day, Ranger Rabbit, Elinor’s mother, rakes leaves into a pile. Ari, Elinor and Olive help her gather small branches.
Elinor asks, WOW, DID THE WIND
REALLY BLOW DOWN ALL OF THIS, MOM?
Ranger Rabbit says, IT SURE DID, THERE
WERE SOME VERY STRONG WINDS
LAST NIGHT.
Ari says, STRONG ENOUGH TO KNOCK
BRANCHES OFF OF TREES?
Ranger Rabbit says, MM-HM.
Elinor asks, MOM, CAN THE WIND
BLOW OVER A WHOLE TREE?
Ranger Rabbit says, WELL, TREES HAVE
ROOTS THAT GO INTO THE GROUND,
AND THAT HELPS KEEP THEM FROM
GETTING BLOWN OVER, BUT IF THE
WIND IS STRONG ENOUGH, IT COULD
BLOW OVER A WHOLE TREE.
[Olive gasps]
Olive says, MY TREE!
Elinor says, MOM, WE HAVE TO GO
CHECK OLIVE'S TREE.
Ranger Rabbit says, OKAY, YOU GO
AHEAD AND I'LL CATCH UP.
[Scraping rake]
Olive, Elinor and Ari run past a pond.
Elinor says, I'M SURE YOUR TREE
IS OKAY, OLIVE.
Ari says, YEAH, I CAN'T WAIT TO CLIMB--
[Gasp]
Olive says, MY TREE!
Elinor says, OH...
Ari says, EXACTLY, I CAN'T
WAIT TO CLIMB YOUR TREE.
Olive says, NO, MY TREE! LOOK!
Olive’s tree lies on its side on the top of the hill.
[Sad music plays]
Ari says, OH, NO!
Elinor says, POOR TREE.
Olive asks, WHAT HAPPENED?
IT LOOKS LIKE IT JUST FELL.
Elinor says, IT WAS THE WIND!
THE WIND MUST HAVE PUSHED
THE TREE OVER LAST NIGHT!
Ari says, OKAY, THEN LET'S PUSH
IT BACK UP. I GOT THIS. I'LL JUST...
[Knuckles crack]
Ari tries to lift the tree.
[Grunting]
Ari says, NOPE, NOT HAPPENING.
Olive says, BUT WE HAVE TO DO
SOMETHING! MY TREE CAN'T STAY
ON THE GROUND.
Ranger Rabbit arrives.
[Birds chirp]
Ranger Rabbit asks, WHAT'S GOING ON KIDS?
Elinor says, MOM, YOU'RE JUST IN TIME!
WE HAVE TO PUT OLIVE'S TREE BACK UP.
Ranger Rabbit says, UH-OH.
Elinor asks, CAN YOU FIX IT, MOM?
Ranger Rabbit says, I'M SORRY, KIDS,
IT LOOKS LIKE THIS TREE WAS VERY
OLD. IT MUST HAVE GOTTEN SICK.
[Bird chirps, gentle music plays]
Olive asks, TREES GET SICK?
Ranger Rabbit says, THEY DO, OLIVE.
SOMETIMES YOU CAN TELL WHEN A
TREE IS SICK.
Elinor says, MOM, YESTERDAY, ONE
OF THE BRANCHES BROKE, AND IT
LOOKED REALLY DARK INSIDE.
Ari says, AND THE BARK LOOKED
KINDA FUNNY IN SOME SPOTS.
Olive asks, DOES THAT MEAN THAT
THE TREE WAS SICK?
Ranger Rabbit says, YES, IT LOOKS
LIKE IT'S BEEN SICK FOR A WHILE.
Elinor peers at the tree trunk.
She says, THERE'S A BIG HOLE IN
THE TREE.
Ranger Rabbit says, WHEN A TREE
GETS SICK LIKE THIS, IT BECOMES
WEAK AND CAN'T HOLD ITSELF
UP VERY WELL.
THE WIND LAST NIGHT MUST HAVE
BEEN STRONG ENOUGH TO JUST
PUSH IT OVER.
Olive says, SO, WE CAN'T PUT MY
TREE BACK UP EVER?
Ranger Rabbit says, I'M AFRAID NOT, OLIVE.
[Sad music plays]
Olive says, OH.
Ranger Rabbit says, I'M SO SORRY, OLIVE.
ELINOR TOLD ME THIS WAS YOUR
SPECIAL TREE. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU
HAD A LOT OF REALLY FUN
TIMES HERE.
Olive says, YEAH, I DID. ME AND MY MOM
AND MY GRANDMA, TOO.
Olive takes out her notebook of drawings of the tree.
[Solemn music plays]
She says, ONE TIME, MY MOM AND
I COUNTED THE STARS ALL NIGHT,
THEN SLEPT UNDER OUR TREE.
AND ONE TIME WE SPENT ALL DAY
RAKING UP MY TREE'S LEAVES
AND THEN I JUMPED IN THE PILE.
AND THIS WAS THE BRANCH WE USED
WHEN MY MOM TAUGHT ME HOW TO
CLIMB, BUT NOW THE TREE FELL
DOWN AND WE WON'T BE ABLE TO
CLIMB IT AGAIN.
Olive hugs Ranger Rabbit.
Ranger Rabbit says, I KNOW, OLIVE,
AND I UNDERSTAND WHY THAT
WOULD MAKE YOU SAD.
Elinor says, MOM, WHAT HAPPENS
TO TREES WHEN THEY FALL DOWN?
Ranger Rabbit says, THAT'S A GOOD
QUESTION, ELINOR, AND I THINK
THE ANSWER MIGHT HELP MAKE
YOU ALL FEEL A LITTLE BETTER.
[Gentle music plays]
Ranger Rabbit says, YOUR SPECIAL
TREE WILL STILL BE AROUND FOR
MANY MORE YEARS. IT'S GOING TO
BECOME WHAT WE PARK RANGERS
CALL A WILDLIFE TREE.
Olive smiles and repeats. A WILDLIFE TREE?
Ranger Rabbit says, YES, A WILDLIFE
TREE IS THE VERY LAST STEP IN A
TREE'S LIFE CYCLE.
Olive asks, IS THE LIFE CYCLE LIKE HOW
THIS TREE STARTED AS AN ACORN,
THEN GREW ALL THE WAY UP FROM
A SPROUT TO A BIG TREE?
Ranger Rabbit says, THAT'S RIGHT, OLIVE!
LET'S TAKE A WALK IN THE WOODS
AND I'LL SHOW YOU.
Olive, Elinor and Ari follow Ranger Rabbit away from Olive’s tree.
[Upbeat music plays]
They stop beside a small fallen tree with a bird’s nest in the branches and fungus growing on the trunk.
Ari exclaims, WHOA!
Elinor says, WOW! SO, THIS IS
A WILDLIFE TREE?
[Gentle music plays]
Ranger Rabbit says, IT SURE IS, ELINOR.
THIS IS A TREE THAT FELL DOWN A
LONG TIME AGO, AND NOW IT'S A
VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE FOREST.
WILDLIFE TREES ARE HOMES TO LOTS
OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CREATURES.
Ari points at a green lizard.
He says, LOOK, A LIZARD!
[Rustling]
Olive says, AND LOOK, A BIRD MADE
A NEST IN THE TREE.
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, THAT'S SO INTERESTING.
A thought bubble above Ranger Rabbit’s head shows a decaying fallen tree.
[Slide whistle]
Ranger Rabbit says, YES, AND AS THE
TREE GETS EVEN OLDER, IT'S GOING
TO BREAK DOWN AND BECOME PART
OF THE SOIL, HELPING NEW PLANTS
AND TREES GROW IN ITS PLACE.
Olive says, WOW, SO EVEN IF A TREE FALLS
DOWN, IT'S STILL A PART OF THE
FOREST.
Ranger Rabbit says, MM-HM!
[Sad music plays]
Olive stands beside her fallen tree.
Olive says, I KNOW THAT MY TREE
IS GOING TO HELP LOTS OF PLANTS
AND CREATURES, BUT I'M STILL
GONNA MISS SEEING IT STAND UP
BIG AND TALL.
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, IT WAS A REALLY NICE
TREE, OLIVE.
MAYBE WE CAN STILL COME VISIT
ALL THE TIME.
Ari says, YEAH, THINK OF ALL THE NEW
KINDS OF FUN WE CAN HAVE WITH IT
NOW THAT IT'S A WILDLIFE TREE.
MAYBE WE'LL MEET SOME
NEW CREATURES.
Olive says, I GUESS IT WILL BE PRETTY
COOL TO SEE WHAT KINDS OF
ANIMALS AND PLANTS MAKE MY
TREE THEIR HOME.
Range Rabbit says, MM-HM, I DON'T
THINK YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO
WAIT VERY LONG TO FIND OUT. LOOK!
A small blue lizard with yellow spots crawls on the tree trunk.
Olive and Ari say, AW!
Elinor says, CUTE!
Ari, Elinor and Olive dance.
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari, Elinor and Olive sing, A TREE CAN GROW
BOTH BIG AND SMALL,
NO MATTER THE SIZE
WE LOVE THEM ALL.
WE CLIMB THEIR BRANCHES
AND GIVE US SHADE,
TREES ARE THE BEST THINGS
EVER MADE.
Elinor sings, IT STARTS WITH A
SEED PLANTED IN THE GROUND,
THAT BECOMES A SPROUT, THEY'RE
ALL AROUND.
Ari sings, IT GROWS BIGGER, AS BIG AS ME
[Whoosh]
He sings, BUT REAL SOON, IT'S A FULL
GROWN TREE.
Olive sings, THEN ONE DAY, IT'S A
WILDLIFE TREE,
JUST AS IMPORTANT I HOPE
YOU'LL SEE.
BECAUSE IT HELPS NEW PLANTS TO GROW,
AND IT'S HOME TO ANIMALS WE KNOW.
Ari, Elinor and Olive sing, A TREE CAN GROW
BOTH BIG AND SMALL,
NO MATTER THE SIZE
WE LOVE THEM ALL.
WE CLIMB THEIR BRANCHES
AND GIVE US SHADE ,
TREES ARE THE BEST THINGS
EVER MADE. OOH
Elinor asks, HOW ARE YOU FEELING
NOW, OLIVE?
Olive says, BETTER, THANKS.
MY MOM'S GONNA BE SAD THAT THE
TREE FELL DOWN, BUT I THINK
SHE'LL BE HAPPY TO KNOW IT'S
STILL A PART OF THE FOREST.
Ari says, AND, OLIVE, DON'T FORGET
ONE THING.
Ari runs to the small tree.
[Footsteps crunch]
Ari says, THE SPROUT!
Olive says, YOU'RE RIGHT, ARI,
I FORGOT THIS TREE SPROUT IS
GOING TO GROW INTO A BIG,
BIG TREE!
Ranger Rabbit says, HM, THERE ARE
NO OTHER TREES AROUND, SO THIS
SPROUT MUST BE FROM AN ACORN
THAT FELL OFF YOUR TREE, OLIVE.
[Children gasp]
Olive says, HELLO, BABY TREE!
[Upbeat music plays]

Elinor sings, WHY DO BIRDS SING?
AND HOW DO THEY FLY?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor watches ants through a magnifying glass.
Elinor sings WHY DO ANTS MARCH?
AND WHERE DO THEY HIDE?
THERE'S SO MUCH TO LEARN
WHEREVER YOU TURN
JUST LISTEN AND SEE
AND FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY.
[Chiming]
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, ASK A QUESTION
WHAT WILL YOU FIND?
Voices sing, ELINOR WONDERS WHY.
Elinor sings, JUST LISTEN AND SEE
COME AND WONDER WITH ME.
Text above Elinor reads, “Elinor Wonders Why.” A magnifying glass with pink bunny ears replaces the letter ‘O’ in Elinor’s name.
Blue text reads, “Burrowing Owl Girl.”
Elinor reads, BURROWING OWL GIRL.
Bibi, Elinor’s grandmother, waters a cactus in a pot on a table in her living room. She wears an orange open shirt over a yellow shirt.
[Water pours, doorbell rings, gentle music plays, door creaks]
Mr. Rabbit asks, DID ANYONE
ORDER A RABBIT FAMILY?
[Giggling]
Bibi says, AH, COME HERE YOU!
OOH, MY FAVOURITE SON!
Mr. Rabbit says, YOUR FAVOURITE?
UH, MOM.
[Wobbling noise, giggling]
Mr. Rabbit continues, I'M YOUR ONLY SON.
Bibi says, WELL, IT'S A GOOD THING
YOU'RE MY FAVOURITE THEN.
[They laugh]
Bibi says, AND MY FAVOURITE
DAUGHTER-IN-LAW, SO GOOD TO SEE
YOU, DEAR.
[Kiss]
Ranger Rabbit says, YOU TOO, BIBI.
Bibi asks, WHERE'S ELINOR?
Ranger Rabbit says, I DON'T KNOW,
BUT GUESS WHO HAS A SPECIAL
SURPRISE FOR YOU.
Elinor runs between her parents. She wears a brown owl costume with her white ears poking up through the top.
Elinor shouts, SURPRISE!
[Elinor hoots, harmonica music plays]
Bibi says, OH, WOW! AN OWL!
I'VE NEVER HAD AN OWL VISIT
ME BEFORE.
Elinor says, BIBI, IT'S ME!
Bibi says, ELINOR! I THOUGHT
YOU WERE A REAL OWL.
[Elinor giggles]
Elinor asks, DO YOU LIKE MY OWL COSTUME?
I MADE IT FOR COSTUME DAY AT SCHOOL.
MOM HELPED A LITTLE.
Ranger Rabbit says, YES, AND SINCE
THEN SHE'S BEEN WEARING IT A LOT.
Elinor says, EVERY DAY! OWLS ARE
SOME OF MY FAVOURITE ANIMALS.
Bibi says, REALLY?
I LOVE OWLS, TOO.
[Gentle music plays]
Bibi and Elinor say, THEY'RE SO INTERESTING!
Ranger Rabbit says, WELL, WE'RE HELPING
YOUR GRANDPA TODAY, HONEY BUNNY,
AND THAT MEANS YOU'RE GOING TO
STAY WITH BIBI FOR THE AFTERNOON.
Elinor says, AWESOME, I CAN'T WAIT
TO TELL YOU ALL ABOUT OWLS, BIBI.
I KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS
TO KNOW ABOUT THEM!
Bibi asks, EVERYTHING?
Elinor says, YEP.
Bibi says, WELL, I WOULDN'T BE
SO SURE OF THAT, ELINOR.
NATURE ALWAYS SEEMS TO FIND
A WAY TO SURPRISE YOU.
Elinor runs in circles around the living room.
[Upbeat music plays]
She says, WATCH ME!
[Elinor hoots, adults chuckle]
Bibi says, OH, DEAR.
[Elinor hoots]
Later, Elinor runs in circles on sand as Bibi sits at a planting table outside.
Elinor asks, WHATCHA DOIN', BIBI?
Bibi says, A LITTLE INVESTIGATION.
I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH
TYPE OF SAND MY CACTUSES LIKE
THE BEST.
Elinor says, COOL!
WELL, I DID A LOT OF INVESTIGATING
ABOUT OWLS WITH MY MOM, AND
THAT'S HOW I KNOW ALL ABOUT THEM.
In a thought bubble over Elinor’s head, an owl perches on a branch.
[Popping]
Elinor says, OWLS SLEEP ALL DAY, AND
THEY'RE ONLY AWAKE AT NIGHT.
THEY'RE SUPER GOOD AT FLYING--
[Owl hoots, crickets chirp, gentle music plays]
Elinor continues, --AND THEY LIVE
WAY UP IN THE TREES.
I OBSERVED THEM MYSELF!
[Whoosh]
Bibi says, THAT'S WONDERFUL, OWL
GIRL ELINOR, BUT JUST REMEMBER,
A GOOD SCIENTIST KNOWS THERE'S
ALWAYS MORE TO FIND OUT, SO KEEP
ASKING QUESTIONS.
Elinor says, AND THAT MEANS MAKE
LOTS AND LOTS OF OBSERVATIONS!
Bibi says, EXACTLY!
[Elinor hoots, whooshing, chirping, humming]
[Rustling]
Elinor approaches a patch of tall grass.
Elinor asks, WHAT'S THAT?
TWO EYES?
[Gasp]
Elinor says, IT'S AN OWL!
HELLO, LITTLE OWL.
LOOK AT ME, I'M AN OWL TOO.
[Elinor hoots, owl hoots]
Elinor says, WAIT A MINUTE,
IT'S THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY.
WHY ARE YOU AWAKE, LITTLE OWL?
YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE SLEEPING
RIGHT NOW, SO YOU CAN BE AWAKE
AT NIGHT. THAT'S WHAT OWLS DO!
The small owl runs to another patch of grass. Elinor follows it.
[Hoot, gasp, rustling, upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, I WONDER WHY THIS
OWL ISN'T SLEEPING.
[Hoot, upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, HUH?
NOW IT'S RUNNING ON THE GROUND?
BUT OWLS ARE SUPPOSED TO FLY IN
THE SKY. IS THAT EVEN AN OWL?
BIBI, BIBI!
I JUST SAW AN IMPOSSIBLE ANIMAL!
Bibi says, A WHAT?
Elinor says, AN ANIMAL THAT CAN'T BE!
IT LOOKS LIKE AN ANIMAL THAT I
KNOW, BUT IT'S NOT DOING THE
THINGS IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO!
Bibi says, AN IMPOSSIBLE ANIMAL?
THAT IS SO INTERESTING.
Elinor says, I DON'T UNDERSTAND!
Bibi says, WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT
A SCIENTIST DOES WHEN SHE SEES
SOMETHING SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND.
Elinor says, YES, SHE NEEDS--
Elinor and Bibi say, MORE OBSERVATIONS!
Elinor says, COME ON, BIBI!
[Crunching footsteps in sand]
Elinor leads Bibi to the small owl.
[Owl hoots, gentle music plays]
Elinor says, THERE IT IS!
THAT'S THE ANIMAL I SAW EARLIER.
IT LOOKS LIKE AN OWL, BUT IT
CAN'T BE AN OWL.
THIS BIRD IS AWAKE DURING THE
DAY AND OWLS ARE ONLY AWAKE
AT NIGHT.
Bibi says, I SEE.
[Hooting]
Elinor whispers, IT'S COMING CLOSER.
Bibi says, AW, IT'S PRETTY CUTE.
Elinor says, BIBI, LOOK, IT'S RUNNING
AWAY! LET'S FOLLOW IT SO WE CAN
KEEP OBSERVING.
Bibi and Elinor follow the owl. It runs behind them as they look for it. They follow it again as it jumps into a small hole.
[Crunching footsteps, upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, BIBI, THE LITTLE BIRD
WENT INTO THAT HOLE IN THE GROUND.
DO YOU THINK THAT'S WHERE IT LIVES?
Bibi says, WELL, IT SURE LOOKS LIKE IT.
HOLES IN THE GROUND LIKE THAT
ARE CALLED BURROWS.
Elinor says, WOW, THEN IT'S DEFINITELY
NOT AN OWL, BECAUSE OWLS LIVE
IN TREES.
[Elinor gasps, gentle music plays]
Elinor says, ONLY IT REALLY DOES
LOOK LIKE AN OWL.
IT'S GOT BIG EYES, AND A BEAK,
AND FEATHERS.
Bibi says, THIS IS TRUE.
Elinor asks, BUT HOW CAN IT BE
AN OWL IF IT'S AWAKE DURING
THE DAY, RUNS ON THE GROUND,
AND LIVES IN A HOLE?
Bibi says, THAT'S A REALLY GOOD
QUESTION, ELINOR.
Elinor says, I JUST DON'T GET IT.
Bibi says, OH, LOOK, JUST WHAT I WAS
LOOKING FOR.
I FOUND ANOTHER CACTUS FOR MY
INVESTIGATION. ISN'T IT A BEAUTY?
Bibi says, UM, ARE YOU SURE THAT'S
A CACTUS, BIBI?
IT DOESN'T LOOK ANYTHING LIKE
YOUR OTHER CACTUSES.
[Gentle music plays]
Bibi says, GOOD OBSERVATION,
BUT THIS IS A CACTUS.
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT KINDS
OF CACTUSES, AND THEY'RE NOT ALL
THE SAME.
NATURE IS FULL OF THINGS THAT
LOOK SIMILAR AT FIRST, BUT WHEN
YOU LOOK MORE CLOSELY THERE ARE
DIFFERENCES LIKE THOSE TWO ROCKS.
Elinor says, OH, I SEE, ONE HAS A STRIPE.
Bibi says, BUT THEY ARE BOTH ROCKS.
Elinor looks at the little owl.
Elinor says, OOH.
[Hooting]
Elinor says, MAYBE THIS ANIMAL
IS AN OWL, BUT IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT
KIND OF OWL.
Bibi says, AS A MATTER FACT, IT IS.
GOOD THINKING, LITTLE SCIENTIST.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT KINDS OF
OWLS, JUST LIKE THERE ARE
DIFFERENT KINDS OF CACTUSES
AND DIFFERENT KINDS OF ROCKS.
THIS ONE HERE IS CALLED A
BURROWING OWL.
Elinor says, OH, I KNOW, IS IT
BECAUSE THEY LIVE IN BURROWS?
Bibi says, THAT'S RIGHT.
BURROWING OWLS LIVE IN THE
DESERT AND STAY AWAKE DURING
THE DAY, AND GUESS WHAT ELSE?
THEY DON'T MAKE THE HOLES THEY
LIVE IN. THEY USE THE HOLES THAT
OTHER ANIMALS MADE AND DON'T
NEED ANYMORE.
Elinor says, AW, WHAT A SMART LITTLE OWL.
[Gentle hoots]
Elinor says, I THOUGHT I KNEW
EVERYTHING THERE WAS TO KNOW
ABOUT OWLS, BUT I GUESS I DIDN'T.
Bibi says, WELL, NATURE IS FULL OF
SURPRISES, ELINOR. THERE'S ALWAYS
MORE TO LEARN.
[Hooting]
The owl moves twigs and rocks around the burrow.
Elinor asks, WHAT'S IT DOING NOW?
Bibi says, I DON'T KNOW.
I'VE NEVER SEEN A BURROWING
OWL DO THAT. I WONDER WHY.
Elinor says, MAYBE IT'S DECORATING
ITS FRONT DOOR.
Bibi suggests, MAYBE, OR MAYBE
THAT'S ITS ROCK COLLECTION.
[Both laugh]
A turtle walks towards the burrow.
[Upbeat music plays]
Elinor says, IT KINDA LOOKS LIKE IT'S
MAKING A LITTLE FENCE.
LOOK, THAT TURTLE WAS GOING
TO WALK INTO THE HOLE--
[Gasp]
Elinor says, --BUT IT GOT STOPPED
BY THE STICKS AND ROCKS.
MAYBE THE OWL PUT THEM THERE
TO KEEP OTHER ANIMALS OUT.
Bibi says, I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT ELINOR.
[Gasp]
Bibi says, THAT'S AMAZING. I DID NOT
KNOW BURROWING OWLS DID THAT.
Elinor says, YOU DIDN'T? REALLY?
Bibi says, NOPE!
Elinor says, I GUESS THERE IS ALWAYS
MORE TO LEARN, EVEN FOR MY BIBI!
[Bibi laughs]
Bibi says, OH, DEAR.
[Cheerful music plays]
Elinor and Bibi dance.
Elinor and Bibi sing, NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES
THE CLOSER YOU LOOK,
THE MORE YOU WILL SEE
ANIMALS ARE ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.
NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.
[Whoosh]
Elinor sings, I THOUGHT THERE WAS
ONLY ONE KIND OF OWL,
THAT SLEEPS ALL DAY AND FLIES ABOUT.
[Hooting]
Bibi sings, KEEP YOUR MIND OPEN,
AND LOOK ALL AROUND,
Elinor sings, YOU MIGHT FIND AN OWL
THAT RUNS ON THE GROUND.
They sing, NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.
THE CLOSER YOU LOOK,
THE MORE YOU WILL SEE.
[Ribbit, quacking, chirping]
Elinor and Bibi sing, ANIMALS ARE ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.
NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.
Later, Bibi puts a cushion on top of a pile of cushions in her living room.
[Gentle music plays, doorbell rings, door creaks]
Mr. Rabbit says, WE'RE BACK!
Bibi says, AW, MY FAVOURITE
RABBIT FAMILY.
[Kissing]
Ranger Rabbit says, SO, DID YOU
AND ELINOR HAVE FUN TODAY?
Bibi says, OF COURSE!
WE MADE LOTS OF OBSERVATIONS.
IT WAS ALL SO INTERESTING.
Ranger Rabbit says, HM, WHERE IS ELINOR ANYWAY?
Bibi says, OH, I'M NOT SURE.
SHE WAS AROUND HERE SOME PLACE.
Elinor pops out of the pile of cushions.
Elinor shouts, SURPRISE!
[Bibi, Mr. Rabbit and Ranger Rabbit laugh]
[Elinor hoots]
Elinor asks, DO YOU LIKE MY BURROW?
Mr. Rabbit repeats, YOUR BURROW?
I DIDN'T KNOW OWLS HAD BURROWS.
Elinor says, NEITHER DID I, BUT THEN BIBI
AND I MET A SPECIAL KIND OF OWL.
IT'S AWAKE DURING THE DAY, RUNS ON
THE GROUND, AND LIVES IN A BURROW!
Mr. Rabbit says, REALLY!?
Elinor exclaims, IT'S AMAZING, ISN'T IT?
NATURE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.
Mr. Rabbit says, THAT'S RIGHT!
Elinor says, I'M A BURROWING OWL GIRL!
[Laughing, Elinor hoots, gentle music plays]
Elinor, Olive and Ari stand in front of Elinor’s grandparents house.
Ari groans, I'M THIRSTY.
Olive says, IT'S SO DRY OUT HERE
IN THE HOT DESERT.
Elinor says, HM, I WONDER IF THERE ARE
ANY ANIMALS THAT CAN LIVE OUT HERE.
Señor Tapir jumps out from behind a cactus. He holds his acoustic guitar.
Señor Tapir says, HEY, KIDS, THAT'S
A GREAT QUESTION!
Olive, Elinor and Ari shout, SEÑOR TAPIR!
Señor Tapir says, THERE'S NOT MUCH
WATER HERE, AND THAT REMINDS ME
OF A SCIENTIST WHO WONDERED WHAT
KIND OF LIFE SURVIVES IN A DESERT.
[Happy music plays]
Roseli, a brown calugo, wears a grey blazer and light green shirt with blue pants.
Señor Tapir sings, OH, OH, ROSELI OCAMPO
WANTED TO KNOW ALL THE PLACES
WHERE LIFE COULD GROW.
WELL, ALL LIFE IS ALIVE
IT NEEDS WATER TO SURVIVE,
RAIN DROPS WATER FROM THE SKY,
BUT IN THE DESERT IT'S VERY DRY.
ROSELI IN THE DESERT
SAW LIFE ALL AROUND,
SHE WAS AMAZED AT
THE CREATURES THAT SHE FOUND.
OH, OH, ROSELI OCAMPO
WANTED TO KNOW IF THINGS COULD
LIVE IN THE DESERT COLD
ROSELI LOOKED EVERYWHERE
AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
SHE FOUND LIFE EVEN THERE
Roseli examines a chunk of rock.
[Clink]
Señor Tapir sings, OH, OH ROSELI OCAMPO.
NOW SHE KNOWS,
LIFE CAN LIVE IN THE DESERT COLD.
[Señor Tapir shivers, children cheer]
Blue text reads, “Olive’s Tree.”
Elinor reads, OLIVE’S TREE.
Elinor and Ari follow Olive past trees and a large rock.
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari asks, ARE WE THERE YET?
[Olive giggles]
Olive says, NO.
[Birds chirp]
Ari asks, IS THAT IT?
Olive says, NOPE.
Ari asks, WHAT ABOUT THAT ONE?
Olive says, SORRY.
Olive and Elinor climb over a big rock. Ari flies to the top and stands on it.
[Elinor grunts]
Ari asks, IS THIS THE PLACE?
Olive replies, WE'RE ALMOST THERE,
ARI. YOU'LL SEE, IT'S THE BEST SPOT
IN THE WHOLE FOREST. FOLLOW ME!
[Panting]
Olive, Elinor and Ari run up a dirt path on a hill towards a large, leafy tree.
Olive says, OVER HERE!
[Panting]
Elinor says, WHOA!
Olive says, WELCOME TO MY TREE!
Elinor says, OH, OLIVE, IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!
Ari says, THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING
TREE I'VE EVER SEEN.
In a thought bubble over Olive’s head, she and her mother walk to the tree.
[Whoosh, gentle music plays]
Olive says, YEAH, IT'S PRETTY SPECIAL.
MY MOM AND I COME HERE ALL THE
TIME, AND SHE USED TO COME HERE
WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE, JUST LIKE ME.
Elinor says, WOW, THIS TREE MUST
BE REALLY OLD.
Olive says, YEP, AND IT'S THE BEST
PLACE IN THE WORLD FOR PLAYING,
CLIMBING, NAPPING, OH, AND PICNICKING.
Ari asks, DID SOMEONE SAY PICNICKING?
[Smacking lips, children giggle]
Elinor asks, WHAT SHOULD WE DO
FIRST, OLIVE?
Olive says, ANYTHING WE WANT!
Olive, Ari and Elinor roll down the hill.
[Exclaiming, giggling]
Elinor leapfrogs over Ari.
[Cheering]
The children run in circles around the tree trunk.
[Everyone giggles]
Ari shouts, BOO!
They run in the opposite direction around the tree.
[Laughter]
Later, Ari hangs upside down from a tree branch. Olive sits leaning against the tree. Elinor lies on her stomach looking down the hill.
[Birds chirp, bugs chitter, gentle music plays]
Ari asks, WHATCHA DOING NOW, OLIVE?
Olive says, DRAWING A PICTURE OF
MY SPECIAL TREE. I DRAW A NEW
ONE EVERY TIME I COME UP HERE.
I'VE BEEN HERE SO MANY TIMES
I'VE ALMOST FILLED UP THIS
WHOLE BOOK!
[Pages flip]
Ari says, COOL, I WANNA SEE! OW!
Ari lands on the ground. An acorn falls on his head and bounces off.
[Whoosh]
Elinor asks, ARE YOU OKAY ARI?
Ari says, YEAH, BUT SOMETHING HIT ME.
Elinor says, IT FELL OFF THE TREE.
Ari asks, IS THE TREE MAD AT ME?
Olive says, NO, IT'S JUST DROPPING
A SEED ON THE GROUND.
Ari says, TREES HAVE SEEDS?
Olive says, UH-HUH, MY MOM TOLD
ME ACORNS LIKE THIS ONE ARE OAK
TREE SEEDS AND THIS IS AN OAK TREE.
Elinor says, WOW, OLIVE, YOU SURE
KNOW A LOT ABOUT TREES.
Olive says, YEAH, MY MOM AND I REALLY
LOVE TREES.
Ari says, ME, TOO!
[Crunching]
Olive says, WAIT, ARI, DON'T SIT
THERE, YOU'LL SMOOSH THAT TREE!
[Gasp]
Ari asks, ARE YOU SURE THAT'S A TREE?
IT LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE WEED TO ME.
Olive says, NOPE, THAT'S WHAT A TREE
LOOKS LIKE WHEN IT FIRST COMES
OUT OF THE SEED. HERE, TAKE A LOOK.
Olive holds her purple magnifying glass beside the small tree.
Elinor asks, SO, THIS LITTLE PLANT
IS A BABY TREE?
Olive says, YEP, MY MOM SAID TREES
START OUT AS LITTLE SEEDS, THEN
THEY BECOME LITTLE SPROUTS LIKE
THIS ONE, AND FINALLY, BIG GROWN-UP
TREES LIKE THIS!
Ari says, WOW, IT'S SO NEAT TO THINK
THAT THIS GIANT TREE CAME FROM
A TEENY-TINY ACORN.
Ari flies up and grabs a branch. He swings on it and it breaks.
[Upbeat music plays, Ari grunts, creak, Ari screams]
Elinor says, OH, NO, ARE YOU OKAY, ARI?
Ari says, YEAH, I'M FINE.
Olive says, I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED
TO THE BRANCH.
Ari says, I DON'T KNOW.
IT JUST, YOU KNOW, BROKE.
Olive says, AW, POOR TREE.
Elinor says, DON'T WORRY, OLIVE,
YOUR TREE HAS LOTS OF BRANCHES.
Olive says, YEAH, I GUESS YOU'RE RIGHT.
AND THIS BRANCH LOOKS KINDA
DIFFERENT ANYWAY, BUT I'VE BEEN
A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT THE TREE
LATELY. THE BARK IS GETTING CRUMBLY
AND FALLING OFF IN SPOTS.
[Rustling, crumbling]
Elinor says, I'M SURE IT'S OK.
WE CAN COME CHECK THE TREE SOME
OTHER DAY.
Wind blows leaves past Ari.
[Wind blows, Ari gasps]
Ari says, IT'S GETTING WINDY.
WE SHOULD PROBABLY HEAD HOME.
Elinor says, I THINK IT'S ALMOST
TIME FOR DINNER.
Ari says, DID YOU SAY DINNER?
LET'S GO!
[Ari and Elinor giggle, upbeat music plays]
Elinor and Ari run down the hill. Olive pauses beside the tree.
Olive says, SEE YOU LATER, TREE!
Another day, Ranger Rabbit, Elinor’s mother, rakes leaves into a pile. Ari, Elinor and Olive help her gather small branches.
Elinor asks, WOW, DID THE WIND
REALLY BLOW DOWN ALL OF THIS, MOM?
Ranger Rabbit says, IT SURE DID, THERE
WERE SOME VERY STRONG WINDS
LAST NIGHT.
Ari says, STRONG ENOUGH TO KNOCK
BRANCHES OFF OF TREES?
Ranger Rabbit says, MM-HM.
Elinor asks, MOM, CAN THE WIND
BLOW OVER A WHOLE TREE?
Ranger Rabbit says, WELL, TREES HAVE
ROOTS THAT GO INTO THE GROUND,
AND THAT HELPS KEEP THEM FROM
GETTING BLOWN OVER, BUT IF THE
WIND IS STRONG ENOUGH, IT COULD
BLOW OVER A WHOLE TREE.
[Olive gasps]
Olive says, MY TREE!
Elinor says, MOM, WE HAVE TO GO
CHECK OLIVE'S TREE.
Ranger Rabbit says, OKAY, YOU GO
AHEAD AND I'LL CATCH UP.
[Scraping rake]
Olive, Elinor and Ari run past a pond.
Elinor says, I'M SURE YOUR TREE
IS OKAY, OLIVE.
Ari says, YEAH, I CAN'T WAIT TO CLIMB--
[Gasp]
Olive says, MY TREE!
Elinor says, OH...
Ari says, EXACTLY, I CAN'T
WAIT TO CLIMB YOUR TREE.
Olive says, NO, MY TREE! LOOK!
Olive’s tree lies on its side on the top of the hill.
[Sad music plays]
Ari says, OH, NO!
Elinor says, POOR TREE.
Olive asks, WHAT HAPPENED?
IT LOOKS LIKE IT JUST FELL.
Elinor says, IT WAS THE WIND!
THE WIND MUST HAVE PUSHED
THE TREE OVER LAST NIGHT!
Ari says, OKAY, THEN LET'S PUSH
IT BACK UP. I GOT THIS. I'LL JUST...
[Knuckles crack]
Ari tries to lift the tree.
[Grunting]
Ari says, NOPE, NOT HAPPENING.
Olive says, BUT WE HAVE TO DO
SOMETHING! MY TREE CAN'T STAY
ON THE GROUND.
Ranger Rabbit arrives.
[Birds chirp]
Ranger Rabbit asks, WHAT'S GOING ON KIDS?
Elinor says, MOM, YOU'RE JUST IN TIME!
WE HAVE TO PUT OLIVE'S TREE BACK UP.
Ranger Rabbit says, UH-OH.
Elinor asks, CAN YOU FIX IT, MOM?
Ranger Rabbit says, I'M SORRY, KIDS,
IT LOOKS LIKE THIS TREE WAS VERY
OLD. IT MUST HAVE GOTTEN SICK.
[Bird chirps, gentle music plays]
Olive asks, TREES GET SICK?
Ranger Rabbit says, THEY DO, OLIVE.
SOMETIMES YOU CAN TELL WHEN A
TREE IS SICK.
Elinor says, MOM, YESTERDAY, ONE
OF THE BRANCHES BROKE, AND IT
LOOKED REALLY DARK INSIDE.
Ari says, AND THE BARK LOOKED
KINDA FUNNY IN SOME SPOTS.
Olive asks, DOES THAT MEAN THAT
THE TREE WAS SICK?
Ranger Rabbit says, YES, IT LOOKS
LIKE IT'S BEEN SICK FOR A WHILE.
Elinor peers at the tree trunk.
She says, THERE'S A BIG HOLE IN
THE TREE.
Ranger Rabbit says, WHEN A TREE
GETS SICK LIKE THIS, IT BECOMES
WEAK AND CAN'T HOLD ITSELF
UP VERY WELL.
THE WIND LAST NIGHT MUST HAVE
BEEN STRONG ENOUGH TO JUST
PUSH IT OVER.
Olive says, SO, WE CAN'T PUT MY
TREE BACK UP EVER?
Ranger Rabbit says, I'M AFRAID NOT, OLIVE.
[Sad music plays]
Olive says, OH.
Ranger Rabbit says, I'M SO SORRY, OLIVE.
ELINOR TOLD ME THIS WAS YOUR
SPECIAL TREE. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU
HAD A LOT OF REALLY FUN
TIMES HERE.
Olive says, YEAH, I DID. ME AND MY MOM
AND MY GRANDMA, TOO.
Olive takes out her notebook of drawings of the tree.
[Solemn music plays]
She says, ONE TIME, MY MOM AND
I COUNTED THE STARS ALL NIGHT,
THEN SLEPT UNDER OUR TREE.
AND ONE TIME WE SPENT ALL DAY
RAKING UP MY TREE'S LEAVES
AND THEN I JUMPED IN THE PILE.
AND THIS WAS THE BRANCH WE USED
WHEN MY MOM TAUGHT ME HOW TO
CLIMB, BUT NOW THE TREE FELL
DOWN AND WE WON'T BE ABLE TO
CLIMB IT AGAIN.
Olive hugs Ranger Rabbit.
Ranger Rabbit says, I KNOW, OLIVE,
AND I UNDERSTAND WHY THAT
WOULD MAKE YOU SAD.
Elinor says, MOM, WHAT HAPPENS
TO TREES WHEN THEY FALL DOWN?
Ranger Rabbit says, THAT'S A GOOD
QUESTION, ELINOR, AND I THINK
THE ANSWER MIGHT HELP MAKE
YOU ALL FEEL A LITTLE BETTER.
[Gentle music plays]
Ranger Rabbit says, YOUR SPECIAL
TREE WILL STILL BE AROUND FOR
MANY MORE YEARS. IT'S GOING TO
BECOME WHAT WE PARK RANGERS
CALL A WILDLIFE TREE.
Olive smiles and repeats. A WILDLIFE TREE?
Ranger Rabbit says, YES, A WILDLIFE
TREE IS THE VERY LAST STEP IN A
TREE'S LIFE CYCLE.
Olive asks, IS THE LIFE CYCLE LIKE HOW
THIS TREE STARTED AS AN ACORN,
THEN GREW ALL THE WAY UP FROM
A SPROUT TO A BIG TREE?
Ranger Rabbit says, THAT'S RIGHT, OLIVE!
LET'S TAKE A WALK IN THE WOODS
AND I'LL SHOW YOU.
Olive, Elinor and Ari follow Ranger Rabbit away from Olive’s tree.
[Upbeat music plays]
They stop beside a small fallen tree with a bird’s nest in the branches and fungus growing on the trunk.
Ari exclaims, WHOA!
Elinor says, WOW! SO, THIS IS
A WILDLIFE TREE?
[Gentle music plays]
Ranger Rabbit says, IT SURE IS, ELINOR.
THIS IS A TREE THAT FELL DOWN A
LONG TIME AGO, AND NOW IT'S A
VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE FOREST.
WILDLIFE TREES ARE HOMES TO LOTS
OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CREATURES.
Ari points at a green lizard.
He says, LOOK, A LIZARD!
[Rustling]
Olive says, AND LOOK, A BIRD MADE
A NEST IN THE TREE.
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, THAT'S SO INTERESTING.
A thought bubble above Ranger Rabbit’s head shows a decaying fallen tree.
[Slide whistle]
Ranger Rabbit says, YES, AND AS THE
TREE GETS EVEN OLDER, IT'S GOING
TO BREAK DOWN AND BECOME PART
OF THE SOIL, HELPING NEW PLANTS
AND TREES GROW IN ITS PLACE.
Olive says, WOW, SO EVEN IF A TREE FALLS
DOWN, IT'S STILL A PART OF THE
FOREST.
Ranger Rabbit says, MM-HM!
[Sad music plays]
Olive stands beside her fallen tree.
Olive says, I KNOW THAT MY TREE
IS GOING TO HELP LOTS OF PLANTS
AND CREATURES, BUT I'M STILL
GONNA MISS SEEING IT STAND UP
BIG AND TALL.
[Birds chirp]
Elinor says, IT WAS A REALLY NICE
TREE, OLIVE.
MAYBE WE CAN STILL COME VISIT
ALL THE TIME.
Ari says, YEAH, THINK OF ALL THE NEW
KINDS OF FUN WE CAN HAVE WITH IT
NOW THAT IT'S A WILDLIFE TREE.
MAYBE WE'LL MEET SOME
NEW CREATURES.
Olive says, I GUESS IT WILL BE PRETTY
COOL TO SEE WHAT KINDS OF
ANIMALS AND PLANTS MAKE MY
TREE THEIR HOME.
Range Rabbit says, MM-HM, I DON'T
THINK YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO
WAIT VERY LONG TO FIND OUT. LOOK!
A small blue lizard with yellow spots crawls on the tree trunk.
Olive and Ari say, AW!
Elinor says, CUTE!
Ari, Elinor and Olive dance.
[Upbeat music plays]
Ari, Elinor and Olive sing, A TREE CAN GROW
BOTH BIG AND SMALL,
NO MATTER THE SIZE
WE LOVE THEM ALL.
WE CLIMB THEIR BRANCHES
AND GIVE US SHADE,
TREES ARE THE BEST THINGS
EVER MADE.
Elinor sings, IT STARTS WITH A
SEED PLANTED IN THE GROUND,
THAT BECOMES A SPROUT, THEY'RE
ALL AROUND.
Ari sings, IT GROWS BIGGER, AS BIG AS ME
[Whoosh]
He sings, BUT REAL SOON, IT'S A FULL
GROWN TREE.
Olive sings, THEN ONE DAY, IT'S A
WILDLIFE TREE,
JUST AS IMPORTANT I HOPE
YOU'LL SEE.
BECAUSE IT HELPS NEW PLANTS TO GROW,
AND IT'S HOME TO ANIMALS WE KNOW.
Ari, Elinor and Olive sing, A TREE CAN GROW
BOTH BIG AND SMALL,
NO MATTER THE SIZE
WE LOVE THEM ALL.
WE CLIMB THEIR BRANCHES
AND GIVE US SHADE ,
TREES ARE THE BEST THINGS
EVER MADE. OOH
Elinor asks, HOW ARE YOU FEELING
NOW, OLIVE?
Olive says, BETTER, THANKS.
MY MOM'S GONNA BE SAD THAT THE
TREE FELL DOWN, BUT I THINK
SHE'LL BE HAPPY TO KNOW IT'S
STILL A PART OF THE FOREST.
Ari says, AND, OLIVE, DON'T FORGET
ONE THING.
Ari runs to the small tree.
[Footsteps crunch]
Ari says, THE SPROUT!
Olive says, YOU'RE RIGHT, ARI,
I FORGOT THIS TREE SPROUT IS
GOING TO GROW INTO A BIG,
BIG TREE!
Ranger Rabbit says, HM, THERE ARE
NO OTHER TREES AROUND, SO THIS
SPROUT MUST BE FROM AN ACORN
THAT FELL OFF YOUR TREE, OLIVE.
[Children gasp]
Olive says, HELLO, BABY TREE!
[Upbeat music plays]
