[Cheerful music plays]
Mandisa wears her long black hair pulled away from her face. She wears light blue denim overalls over a sleeveless peach shirt. She smiles as she holds up a cardboard monster and an upside down drinking cup rabbit. Text above her reads, “Curious Crafting.”
[Boing]
Mandisa sits at a white oval table and dances with two children. A girl with long black hair in pigtails sits to her left. The girl wears a pink, peach and turquoise striped long-sleeve shirt. A boy with shoulder-length brown hair sits to Mandisa’s right. He wears a dark green long-sleeve shirt. When he smiles, he is missing one of his top front teeth.
[Cheerful music plays]
Mandisa says, OH, OKAY, I NEED
A LITTLE DANCE BREAK.
WHO WANTS TO MAKE A CRAFT?
The girl says, ME.
The boy says, ME, ME, ME.
Mandisa says, WELL, BUT DANCE
DOESN'T NEED TO STOP WHEN
WE'RE CRAFTING.
NOT IF WE MAKE A DANCING PUPPET.
Mandisa holds up a paper puppet. She pulls a string and the arms and legs move.
The girl says, LET'S MAKE ONE.
Mandisa says, OKAY, LET'S GET OUR SUPPLIES.
The boy says, LET'S DANCE OVER.
Mandisa says, YEAH.
The children gather supplies and place them on a white square table. As Mandisa lists the supplies, they appear on the table.
[Energetic music plays]
Mandisa says, WE'RE GOING TO NEED
CONSTRUCTION PAPER AND FASTENERS,
POMPOMS, STRING, EMBROIDERY NEEDLES,
GOOGLY EYES, AND A SINGLE-HOLE PUNCH.
An animated brush moves up and down. Soon, Mandisa and the children sit at the table with their supplies on the square table.
[Scratching, upbeat music plays]
Mandisa says, TO MAKE OUR
DANCING PUPPET, WE NEED TO TRACE
AND CUT OUT THE BODY PARTS.
I HAVE A TEMPLATE FOR
YOUR HEAD AND YOUR BODY.
PLACE YOUR HEAD AND
BODY ON THE CARD STOCK.
WE TRACE IT AND THEN
WE'LL CUT THEM OUT.
[Scissors snip, upbeat music continues]
Mandisa says, NOW LET'S TRACE
AND CUT OUT THE ARMS,
HANDS, FEET, AND LEGS.
Mandisa asks, WOULD YOU LIKE
TO HAVE YOUR PUPPET HAVE A
HAT OR HAIR?
The girl says, A WINTER HAT.
The boy says, HAIR.
Mandisa says, GRAB CARD STOCK
AND DRAW SOME HAIR OR HAT.
AND THEN WE'LL CUT IT OUT.
LET'S GLUE THE HEAD TO THE BODY.
NOW YOU CAN GLUE ON YOUR HANDS
AND FEET TO YOUR ARMS AND LEGS.
LET'S FINISH OUR PUPPETS' FACES.
I HAVE SOME GOOGLY
EYES AND POMPOMS.
[Upbeat music continues]
Mandisa says, PUPPETS ARE GONNA
LOOK AMAZING.
AND YOU CAN USE THESE
MARKERS TO DRAW ON A MOUTH.
YOU CAN ALSO DRAW DETAILS
ON YOUR PUPPET'S BODY.
The girl holds up the hole punch.
The girl asks, WHERE DO WE
HOLE-PUNCH OUR THING?
Mandisa says, ONE AT THE VERY
TOP, FOUR IN THE BODY,
AND THEN ONE AT THE TOP
OF YOUR LEGS AND ARMS.
[Clicking]
Mandisa says, I'M MAKING SOME
SMALL PUSHPIN HOLES
ON YOUR ARMS AND LEGS
JUST ABOVE THE HOLE.
I HAVE SOME ROUND
HEAD FASTENERS HERE.
YOU'RE GONNA START BY
CONNECTING YOUR ARMS AND
LEGS TO THE BACK OF
YOUR PUPPET'S BODY.
The boy moves his puppet’s legs.
He says, I WANNA DANCE.
The girl says, ME TOO.
Mandisa says, I HAVE SOME
STRING HERE. AND A NEEDLE.
WANNA TRY THREADING
THAT NEEDLE THROUGH?
The boy says, YEAH, I KNOW HOW TO THREAD.
Mandisa says, THE FIRST THING IS
TO THREAD A NEEDLE
AND PUSH IT THROUGH THE
SMALL HOLE ON TOP OF ONE ARM
AND TIE A KNOT. THEN CONNECT
IT TO THE OTHER ARM.
THEN YOU CONNECT YOUR LEGS
USING THE SAME METHOD,
TYING IT TO THE OTHER LEG.
SO PUSH IT THROUGH
THAT LITTLE HOLE.
The boy asks, RIGHT HERE?
Mandisa says, SO CAN WE TIE
A LITTLE KNOT RIGHT THERE?
The girl says, OKAY.
Mandisa says, OKAY.
AND THEN WE'LL GET
A LONGER STRING
CONNECTED TO THE ARM
STRING AND THE LEG STRING.
ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE BOTTOM.
WE PUT A STRING AT THE TOP.
AND NOW LET'S ADD A
TAB AT THE BOTTOM.
Mandisa holds a paper tab. The girl ties a knot in a piece of string looped through the tab.
[Upbeat music continues]
Mandisa asks, NOW WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO?
The children say, DANCE.
Mandisa and the children pull the strings on their puppets and the arms and legs move.
Mandisa says, YEAH, LET'S DO IT!
SHOULD WE GET UP AND DANCE?
The children say, YEAH.
