Mandisa wears her long black hair pulled away from her face. She wears light blue denim overalls over a sleeveless peach shirt. She smiles as she holds up a cardboard monster and an upside down drinking cup rabbit. Text above her reads, “Curious Crafting.”
[Boing]
Mandisa sits at a white oval table. A girl with long dark brown hair in a ponytail sits to her right. The girl wears a pink long-sleeve shirt. A boy with short black hair sits to Mandisa’s left. He wears a light brown tee-shirt over an orange long-sleeve shirt.
[Cheerful music plays]
Mandisa asks, WHO LIKES TO
RIDE THEIR BICYCLE?
Both children hold a hand over their heads.
The boy says, ME.
The girl says, I DO.
Mandisa says, WHETHER OR NOT YOU
RIDE YOUR BICYCLE,
ANYONE CAN MAKE THEIR
VERY OWN BICYCLE CRAFT.
Mandisa puts a large paper bicycle on the table with paper plate wheels.
[Slide whistle]
The boy says, WOW.
The girl says, COOL.
Mandisa asks, WOULD YOU LIKE
TO CRAFT ONE OF YOUR VERY OWN?
The children say, YES.
Mandisa says, GREAT, LET'S GET OUR SUPPLIES.
The boy says, OKAY.
The children gather supplies and place them on a white square table. As Mandisa lists the supplies, they appear on the table.
[Energetic music plays]
Mandisa says, WE'RE GOING TO NEED
PAPER PLATES AND YARN,
PAPER STRAWS, CARDBOARD,
FOAM STARS, FASTENERS, AND
PAINT STICKS.
An animated brush moves up and down. Soon, Mandisa and the children sit at the table with their supplies on the square table.
[Scratching, cheerful music plays]
Mandisa says, THE FIRST STEP IS
TO BUILD THE FRAME OF OUR BICYCLE.
I HAVE CUT OUT SOME
CARDBOARD STRIPS.
I HAVE FOUR LONG STRIPS,
THREE MEDIUM SIZE STRIPS,
AND ONE SMALL STRIP.
I'VE GOT SOME PAINT STICKS HERE.
GO AHEAD AND DECORATE YOUR
FRAME. NICE.
The boy and girl use the paint sticks and paint the cardboard.
Mandisa says, GOOD COLORING.
YEAH, I LIKE THAT.
The boy says, ALL DONE.
Mandisa says, NEXT STEP IS TO
BUILD OUR FRAME.
YOU'RE GONNA GLUE
YOUR MEDIUM SIZE STRIP
TO THE TOP OF YOUR LONG STRIP.
[Cheerful music continues]
Mandisa says, GREAT.
OKAY, GRAB ANOTHER LONG STRIP.
AND CAN YOU FIND
YOUR SMALL STRIP?
THAT'S RIGHT.
THIS IS GONNA BE YOUR SEAT.
CAN YOU GLUE THAT RIGHT THERE?
RIGHT THERE. NICE.
CAN YOU GRAB THE
TWO LONG STRIPS?
AND WE'RE GONNA GLUE THOSE
TOGETHER IN A SIDEWAYS V.
Mandisa helps the girl position her cardboard strips.
Mandisa says, SO THE LAST TWO STRIPS
WILL MAKE THIS SIDEWAYS V.
The boy says, OH, THAT'S IT.
The girl says, YEAH.
Mandisa says, OKAY, LET'S PUT OUR
BICYCLE FRAMES TOGETHER.
YOU TAKE YOUR BIG T
AND GLUE ON YOUR BIG V ON
THE BACK IN THE MIDDLE THERE.
The boy says, THREE, FOUR.
Mandisa says, OKAY, NEXT, TAKE
YOUR OTHER T.
CAN YOU PUT SOME GLUE
RIGHT HERE AND HERE? GOOD.
WE'RE GONNA STICK OUR SMALL
V TO THE TOP OF OUR SEAT.
The children glue their bicycle frames together.
Mandisa asks, ARE YOUR BICYCLES
READY TO GO FOR A RIDE?
The children say, NO.
The boy says, THAT'S CRAZY.
The girl says, NOT YET.
Mandisa asks, WHAT DO THEY NEED?
The boy says, A WHEEL.
Mandisa says, THAT'S RIGHT, AARAV.
I USED PAPER PLATES
AND PAPER STRAWS.
AND I'M GONNA MAKE A HOLE
IN THE CENTER OF YOUR PLATE.
THIS IS A GOOD PART FOR
AN ADULT TO HELP YOU WITH.
YEAH, IT'S LIKE A LITTLE SLIT.
[Snap]
Mandisa says, WE HAVE TO ADD
OUR FASTENER IN THE CENTER
OF OUR PAPER PLATE.
CAN YOU SLIDE IT INTO THE
HOLE ON YOUR PAPER PLATE?
[Cheerful music continues]
Mandisa says, NEXT STEP, WE'RE
GONNA ADD THE SPOKES ON OUR
WHEELS, AND WE'RE GONNA USE-
Aarav, the boy, asks, STRAWS?
Mandisa says, THAT'S RIGHT,
AARAV, THE STRAWS.
I'M GONNA MAKE A LITTLE HOLE
ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR BIG T
AND YOUR LITTLE V OVER HERE,
AND THAT'S WHERE YOU'RE
GONNA ATTACH YOUR WHEELS.
WE WILL TAKE THE FASTENER.
SO YOU CAN TAKE THAT PART THERE,
AND YOU'RE GONNA STICK IT INTO
THAT HOLE RIGHT THERE, PIPER.
WE WILL FLIP IT OVER.
[Cheerful music continues]
Mandisa says, OKAY, OUR BICYCLES
ARE ALL ASSEMBLED.
WHAT ELSE DO THEY NEED?
Aarav says, MORE DECORATION.
Mandisa says, OKAY, I'VE GOT SOME STAR
STICKERS HERE THAT WE CAN ADD.
ANY COLOR YOU LIKE.
[Thump]
Aarav says, OH, THERE'S ANOTHER.
PUT SOME SPARKLY BLUE STARS,
AND THEN SPARKLY YELLOW.
Mandisa says, OKAY, LET'S ADD THE
LAST THING, OUR TASSELS. A LITTLE
BIT OF GLUE ON YOUR TASSEL.
CAN YOU STICK THAT TO THE
BACK OF YOUR HANDLEBAR?
OKAY, OUR BICYCLES ARE ALL DONE.
LET'S SEE HOW THEY RIDE.
Aarav and Piper, the girl, push their bicycles on the table.
[Aarav imitates a motor]
Mandisa says, COMING THROUGH.
WOW, THESE BICYCLES
ARE RIDING SO WELL.
Piper says, YEAH, LET'S TAKE THEM OUTSIDE.
Mandisa says, OKAY, LET'S GO.
