Jambo sleeps in his hammock. Jasmine lies on top of a tall flower and throws seeds into a trombone hanging by Jambo’s bead. Three Lalalas bounce past the hammock. Jambo stands and follows the Lalalas. They bounce past Ta-Da, who is bouncing a ball in a puddle, Doobeedoo stretching, and Doodoowah lifting weights.
Jambo asks, WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING?
Jasmine says, EXERCISE. THEY WANT TO RUN IN THE GREAT SOUNDLAND RACE.
Jambo asks, WHEN?
Jasmine says, TODAY.
Jambo asks, WHAT ABOUT YOU? AREN'T YOU GOING TO JOIN IN?
[Jasmine scoffing]
Jasmine says, I WOULDN'T EVEN CONSIDER IT. THE LALALAS ALWAYS WIN.
[Rock music plays]
A Lalala lifts weights, the second skips rope and the third jumps over a stack of three jump boxes.
Three Lalalas sing, LALA LALALALALALA.
Jasmine says, LOOK AT THEM, JAMBO, THEY'RE AS FIT AS FIDDLES.
Jambo says, THEIR TEMPO'S INCREDIBLE.
Jasmine says, THEY'RE UNBEATABLE.
Jambo says, DON'T THINK LIKE THAT. I HAVE A METHOD THAT NEVER EVER FAILS.
Jasmine says, YEAH, RIGHT, YOU TURN INTO A ROCKET AND YOU WIN.
Jambo says, THE METHOD ISN'T FOR ME, IT'S FOR YOU. IF YOU WANT, I CAN HELP YOU WIN WITH THE SUPERPOWER OF MUSIC.
Jasmine asks, REALLY?
[Jasmine singing, upbeat music plays]
Jambo says, OH, YES, IT'S JUST A QUESTION OF TEMPO.
[Drumming]
Jambo picks up an accordion, a drum, and cymbals.
Jambo asks, IS IT A MAN? IS IT A BAND? NO, IT'S A ONE-MAN BAND.
[Jambo plays the accordion, drum, and cymbals]
Jasmine asks, ARE YOU A SUPERHERO?
Jambo says, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. NOW I CAN PLAY ALL THESE GREAT INSTRUMENTS ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
Jasmine says, WOWIE, AND HOW WILL THAT HELP ME TO WIN THE RACE?
[Ticking, clinking, ticking faster, ticking faster, gentle notes play, Jasmine humming]
Jambo takes a metronome out of his hat and puts it on the ground by Jasmine. He turns a wind-up lever. Jasmine sways and dances with the tempo.
[Ticking stops]
Jambo stops the metronome.
Jambo says, YOU SEE, IT'S ALL A QUESTION OF TEMPO. YOU JUST HAVE TO TRY TO FOLLOW THE TEMPO THAT I SET FOR YOU.
[Jasmine singing, drumming, gentle music plays]
Later, Jasmine crouches at the starting line with the other racers.
Jambo says, JASMINE, FOLLOW MY LEAD. ON YOUR MARKS, GET SET, GO.
[Jasmine shouting, gasping]
The racers run forward. Jambo picks Jasmine up and puts her by the starting line.
Jambo says, LENTO.
[Jambo plays a slow tempo]
Jasmine strolls.
Jasmine slowly says, JAMBO, THIS TEMPO IS SO SLOW. I'LL NEVER CROSS THE LINE.
Jambo says, YOU NEED TO WARM UP THOSE LEGS OF YOURS. DON'T YOU WORRY; THINGS ARE GOING TO LIVEN UP SOON. LARGHETTO.
[Jambo playing a faster tempo, Jasmine grumbling]
Jasmine walks faster.
Jasmine says, SPEED IT UP A BIT, JAMBO.
Jambo says, ANDANTE.
[Jambo playing a faster tempo, Jasmine grunting]
Jasmine walks past Doodoowah.
Jambo says, MODERATO.
[Jambo playing a faster tempo, splashing, Jasmine humming]
Jasmine speed walks past Ta-Da.
Jambo says, ALLEGRO.

Jasmine passes Doobeedoo.
Jasmine says, HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY.
Jambo says, VIVACE.

Jasmine runs.

[Jasmine screaming]
Jasmine runs past the Lalalas.
Jasmine shouts, JAMBO!
[Panting]
Jambo’s accordion and drum break. The Lalalas run faster. Jasmine, Jambo, the Lalalas, Doobeedoo, and Ta-Da trip and falls just before the finish line.
Jambo says, OH, SOUSAPHONES AND FLUGELHORNS.
[Panting, squeaking, plopping, Doodoowah humming]
Doodoowah arrives and jumps on the others.
Jambo says, OH.
Jasmine says, HUH?
Doodoowah crosses the finish line.
[Applause, cheering
Jasmine says, HOW COME DOODOOWAH WASN'T AFFECTED BY THE TEMPO OF YOUR MUSIC, JAMBO?
Jambo says, WELL, THAT'S BECAUSE DOODOOWAH ONLY LISTENS TO THE TEMPO OF HIS OWN THOUGHTS, AND EVEN THOUGH HE'S SLOW…
Jasmine says, HE KEEPS ON GOING STEP BY STEP AND ALWAYS GETS TO THE FINISH.
Jambo says, THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT.
[Ta-Da singing fanfare, splashing]
Ta-Da leaps over the finish line.
Jambo says, I'M VERY SORRY, JASMINE. MY PLAN WENT A BIT WRONG.
Jasmine says, YOU'RE SO RIGHT, BUT I REALLY LIKE THE TEMPOS. I WANT TO PLAY AND DANCE TO THEM ALL!
[Punk music plays]
Jambo and Jasmine both have spiky hair and play electric guitars. Doodoowah plays the drums. Jasmine runs past pixelated video games, including Pac-Man and Space Invaders.
